We present a detailed multiwavelength photometric study of giant H  ii regions NGC 592 and NGC 588 in the nearby small spiral galaxy M33. We use data taken with the Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on board the Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ). We detect several massive stars in both ionizing clusters. Six Wolf–Rayet (WR) stars are known to exist within those regions and we are able to constrain their physical properties by comparing their photometry to the latest grid of model atmospheres for WR stars of the nitrogen sequence (WN subclass). We estimate the age and mass of both regions by fitting our photometry to models of integrated stellar populations.  相似文献

Based on archival Hubble Space Telescope images, we have performed stellar photometry for the galaxy M 101 and other neighboring galaxies located at a small angular distance from M 101 and having radial velocities similar to that of M 101: M 51, M 63, NGC 5474, NGC 5477, UGC 9405, Ho IV, KUG1413+573, and others. Based on the TRGB method, we have determined the distances to these galaxies. We have found that the M 101 group lies at a distance of 6.8 Mpc and is a small compact galaxy group consisting of four galaxies: NGC 5474, NGC 5477, UGC 9405, and Ho IV. The bright massive galaxies M 51 and M 63 are considerably farther (D = 9.0 and 9.3 Mpc, respectively) than the M 101 group and do not belong to it. Applying the virial theorem to 27 objects (H II regions and galaxies),M 101 satellites located at different distances from the galaxy, has revealed an increase in the dynamical mass of M 101 with increasing sizes of the system of satellites used in calculating the mass. The maximum calculated mass of M 101 is 7.5 × 1011 M . The dynamical mass of M 101 calculated on the basis of the four galaxies constituting the group is 6.2 × 1011 M . The mass-to-light ratio for this mass is M/L = 18 (at the adopted luminosity of M 101, M B = ?20.8).  相似文献

We present HST /WFPC2 observations of UGC 4483, an irregular galaxy in the M81/NGC 2403 complex. Stellar photometry was carried out with HSTphot, and is complete to V ≃26.0 and I ≃24.7. We measure the red giant branch tip at I =23.56±0.10, and calculate a distance modulus of μ 0=27.53±0.12 (corresponding to a distance of 3.2±0.2 Mpc), placing UGC 4483 within the NGC 2403 subgroup. We were able to measure properties of a previously known young star cluster in UGC 4483, finding integrated magnitudes of V =18.66±0.21 and I =18.54±0.10 for the stellar contribution (integrated light minus H α and [O  iii ] contribution), corresponding to an age of ∼10–15 Myr and an initial mass of ∼104 M. This is consistent with the properties of the cluster's brightest stars, which were resolved in the data for the first time. Finally, a numerical analysis of the galaxy's stellar content yields a roughly constant star formation rate of 1.3×10−3 M yr−1 and mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=−1.3 dex from 15 Gyr ago to the present.  相似文献

We have obtained accurate CCD narrow-band Hβ and Hα photometry of giant H  ii regions (GEHRs) in M33, NGC 6822 and M101. Comparison with previous determinations of emission-line fluxes shows large discrepancies; their probable origins are discussed. Combining our new photometric data with global velocity dispersion ( σ ) derived from emission linewidths, we review the     relation. A re-analysis of the properties of the GEHRs included in our sample shows that age spread and the superposition of components in multiple regions introduce a considerable spread in the regression. Combining the information available in the literature regarding ages of the associated clusters, evolutionary footprints on the interstellar medium, and kinematical properties of the knots that build up the multiple GEHRs, we find that a subsample – which we refer to as young and single GEHRs – do follow a tight relation in the     plane.  相似文献

We present a study of the star formation in the giant Hii region NGC5471 in the outskirts of M101. We have performed integrated photometry of the mean emission knots. Stellar population analysis with the code chorizos is compatible with the hypothesis that these regions have at least two different populations. The color–magnitude diagram of the region as derived from Hubble Space Telescope/WPFC2 stellar photometry shows that star formation has been going on for the last 70 Myr.  相似文献

We present the results of a search for dwarf novae (DNe) in globular clusters (GCs). It is based on the largest available homogeneous sample of observations, in terms of the time-span, number of observations and number of clusters. It includes 16 Galactic GCs and yielded two new certain DNe: M55-CV1 and M22-CV2. All previously known systems located in our fields were recovered, too. We surveyed M4, M5, M10, M12, M22, M30, M55, NGC 288, NGC 362, NGC 2808, NGC 3201, NGC 4372, NGC 6362, NGC 6752, ω Centauri (NGC 5139) and 47 Tucanae (NGC 104). The discovery of two DNe, namely M55-CV1 and M22-CV2, was already reported by Kaluzny et al. and Pietrukowicz et al., respectively. In the remaining 14 GCs, we found no certain new DNe. Our result raises the total number of known DNe in the Galactic GCs to 12 DNe, distributed among seven clusters. Our survey recovered all three already known erupting cataclysmic variables (CVs) located in our fields, namely M5-V101, M22-CV1, and V4 in the foreground of M30. To assess the efficiency of the survey, we analysed images with inserted artificial stars mimicking outbursts of the prototype DNe SS Cygni and U Geminorum. Depending on the conditions, we recovered between 16–100 per cent of these artificial stars. The efficiency seems to be predominantly affected by duty cycle/time-sampling and much less by distance/magnitude. Except for saturated tiny collapsed cores of M30, NGC 362 and NGC 6752 (and also the dense core of NGC 2808), crowding effects in the V band were avoided by our image subtraction technique augmented with auxiliary unsaturated B -band images. Our results clearly demonstrate that in GCs common types of DNe are very rare indeed. However, great care must be taken before these conclusions can be extended to the CV population in GCs.  相似文献

We present the results of determinations of age, helium abundance (Y), metallicity ([Fe/H]), and estimations of abundances of the elements: C, N, O, Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, Ni, Sr, and Ba of four globular clusters in the neighborhood of the Andromeda galaxy ([SD2009]GC7,Mayall II, Mackey-GC1 (MGC1), and Bol 298 (MGC6)) and of six Galactic clusters. Medium-resolution long-slit integrated-light spectra from the clusters under study were used to determine the parameters.Observations of extra-galactic objects were carried out with the 6-m SAO RAS telescope using the SCORPIO-1 multimode focal reducer. Galactic globular clusters NGC6341 (M92), NGC6838 (M71), and NGC7078 were observed with the CARELEC spectrograph at the 1.93-m telescope of the Haute-Provence Observatory. The integratedlight spectra of Galactic globular clusters NGC104, NGC6121 (M4), and NGC7078 (M15) were taken from the spectral library by Schiavon. We selected the best isochrone for each cluster by comparison of the shapes and intensities of the observed and theoretical Balmer line profiles.  相似文献

We examined the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra of the H II regions in the disk of the spiral galaxy M101 (NGC 5457), and 17 H II regions with the auroral oxygen line [O III] λ 436.3 nm in their spectra were selected for line intensity measurements. The measurement data were used to determine the oxygen abundance in the H II region sample. We demonstrate that the spectral SDSS data supplemented with the information on the nebular oxygen line [O II] λ 372.7 nm based on the recently found ff-relation between the oxygen line intensities in the spectra of H II regions allow the oxygen abundance to be determined as accurately as in the standard T e method. The parameters of the radial oxygen abundance distribution in the M101 disk (the abundance at the galactic center and the radial gradient) are estimated.  相似文献

A deep H I survey with the VLA of the spiral galaxy NGC 2403 has revealed the existence of a thick, low density layer of neutral gas surrounding the thin ‘cold’ disk. This layer has a mean rotation velocity 25–50 km s-1 lower than that of the disk and a 10–20 km s-1inflow towards the centre of the galaxy. In the central parts there are velocity differences from rotation of up to 150 km s-1.Chandra observations of NGC 2403 show a diffuse, hot X-ray emitting gas component with a temperature of a few 106 K. These results point at galactic fountain type of flows between disk and halo. ‘Halo’ gas with similar characteristics has also been observed in other spiral galaxies(e.g. NGC 6946, NGC 891). Such gas is probably similar to the IVCs and to some of the HVCs of the Milky Way.  相似文献

We present for the first time a two-dimensional velocity field of the central region of the grand-design spiral galaxy NGC 5248, at 0.9-arcsec spatial resolution. The H α velocity field is dominated by circular rotation. While no systematic streaming motions are seen in the area of the nuclear grand-design spiral or the circumnuclear ring, the amplitude of residual velocities, after subtracting a model circular velocity field, reaches 20 km s−1 in projection. The rotation curve levels out at around 140 km s−1, after a well-resolved and rather shallow rise. We have generated an analytical model for the nuclear spiral and fitted it to our observations to obtain estimates of the pattern speed of the spiral and the speed of sound in the central region of NGC 5248. Our results are consistent with a low pattern speed, suggesting that the nuclear spiral rotates with the same rate as the main spiral structure in NGC 5248, and thus that the spiral structure is coupled from scales of a few hundred parsecs to several kiloparsecs. We have also compared the observed structure and kinematics between the nuclear regions of NGC 5248 and M100. Several similarities and differences are discussed, including the location of the peak emission regions on major and minor axes, and the spiral arm streaming motions. We find no kinematic evidence for the presence of a nuclear bar in NGC 5248.  相似文献

We present deep wide-field (16.4×16.4 arcmin2) Washington CT 1 CCD surface photometry of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, the brightest member of the Virgo cluster. Our data cover a wider and deeper field than any previous CCD photometry. A single King model does not give a good fit to the surface brightness profiles of NGC 4472, but they can be fitted approximately using two King models: with the separate models representing the inner and outer regions . Surface brightness profiles for the outer region can also be fitted approximately by a de Vaucouleurs law. There is clearly a negative colour gradient within 3 arcmin of NGC 4472, in the sense that the colour gets bluer with increasing radius. The slope of the colour gradient for this region is derived to be Δ μ ( C − T 1)=−0.08 mag arcsec−2 for Δ log  r =1, which corresponds to a metallicity gradient of Δ[Fe/H]=−0.2 dex. However, the surface colour becomes gradually redder with increasing radius beyond 3 arcmin. A comparison of the structural parameters of NGC 4472 in C and T 1 images has shown that there is little difference in the shapes of ellipses observed using isochromes or isophotes. In addition, photometric and structural parameters of NGC 4472 have been determined.

We present preliminary results obtained from integral-field (IFU) data of the giant extragalactic Hii region NGC5461, located in a spiral arm (RA=14h03m41.4s, dec=+54°19′05″) of M101. The spatial and spectral information obtained with IFUs allows us to decompose the Hii region and analyze it at high resolution.  相似文献

This is the first paper of a series focused on investigating the star formation and evolutionary history of the two early-type galaxies NGC 1407 and NGC 1400. They are the two brightest galaxies of the NGC 1407 (or Eridanus-A) group, one of the 60 groups studied as part of the Group Evolution Multi-wavelength Study.
Here, we present new high signal-to-noise ratio long-slit spectroscopic data obtained at the ESO 3.6-m telescope and high-resolution multiband imaging data from the Hubble Space Telescope /Advanced Camera for Surveys and wide-field imaging from Subaru Suprime-Cam. We spatially resolved integrated spectra out to ∼0.6 (NGC 1407) and ∼1.3 (NGC 1400) effective radii. The radial profiles of the kinematic parameters v rot, σ, h 3 and h 4 are measured. The surface brightness profiles are fitted to different galaxy light models and the colour distributions analysed. The multiband images are modelled to derive isophotal shape parameters and residual galaxy images. The parameters from the surface brightness profile fitting are used to estimate the mass of the possible central supermassive black hole in NGC 1407. The galaxies are found to be rotationally supported and to have a flat core in the surface brightness profiles. Elliptical isophotes are observed at all radii and no fine structures are detected in the residual galaxy images. From our results, we can also discard a possible interaction between NGC 1400, NGC 1407 and the group intergalactic medium. We estimate a mass of  ∼1.03 × 109 M  for the supermassive black hole in NGC 1407 galaxy.  相似文献

We compare the gravitational potential profiles of the elliptical galaxies NGC 4486 (M87) and NGC 1399 (the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster) derived from X-ray and optical data. This comparison suggests that the combined contribution of cosmic rays, magnetic fields and microturbulence to the pressure is ∼10 per cent of the gas thermal pressure in the cores of NGC 1399 and M87, although the uncertainties in our model assumptions (e.g. spherical symmetry) are sufficiently large that the contribution could be consistent with zero. In the absence of any other form of non-thermal pressure support, these upper bounds translate into upper limits on the magnetic field of ∼10–20 μG at a distance of 1–2 arcmin from the centers of NGC 1399 and M87. We show that these results are consistent with the current paradigm of cool cluster cores, based on the assumption that active galactic nuclei regulate the thermal state of the gas by injecting energy into the intracluster medium. The limit of ∼10–20 per cent on the energy density in the form of relativistic protons applies not only to the current state of the gas, but also essentially to the entire history of the intracluster medium, provided that cosmic ray protons evolve adiabatically and that their spatial diffusion is suppressed.  相似文献

We present a possible formation mechanism of the asymmetry in the maser emission line of H2O sources associated with star-forming regions. Observations with the RT-22 radio telescope at the Pushchino Radio Astronomy Observatory are used. We analyze the line profiles of emission features in the sources G43.8-0.1, NGC 2071, and ON1. If the line is asymmetric, the left (low-velocity) wing is higher than the right wing. The proposed mechanism accounts for the observed asymmetry and makes it possible to estimate some physical parameters of the medium in the vicinity of a maser spot.  相似文献

We present internal surface brightness profiles, based on Hubble Space Telescope /ACS imaging in the F 606 W bandpass, for 131 globular cluster (GC) candidates with luminosities   L ≃ 104–3 × 106 L  in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. Several structural models are fitted to the profile of each cluster and combined with mass-to-light ratios ( M / L values) from population-synthesis models, to derive a catalogue of fundamental structural and dynamical parameters parallel in form to the catalogues recently produced by McLaughlin & van der Marel and by Barmby et al. for GCs and massive young star clusters in Local Group galaxies. As part of this, we provide corrected and extended parameter estimates for another 18 clusters in NGC 5128, which we observed previously. We show that, like GCs in the Milky Way and some of its satellites, the majority of globulars in NGC 5128 are well fitted by isotropic Wilson models, which have intrinsically more distended envelope structures than the standard King lowered isothermal spheres. We use our models to predict internal velocity dispersions for every cluster in our sample. These predictions agree well in general with the observed dispersions in a small number of clusters for which spectroscopic data are available. In a subsequent paper, we use these results to investigate scaling relations for GCs in NGC 5128.  相似文献

We summarize the main conclusions derived from integral field spectroscopy, with optical fibres, of six Seyfert galaxies. More than 95 spectra around the active nucleus have been obtained showing asymmetric emission-line profiles at different positions. Continuum and emission-line intensity maps and ionized gas velocity fields have been derived for these six galaxies. We also present the stellar velocity field for NGC 1068, NGC 3516 and NGC 985. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

High angular resolution spectroscopy obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has revealed a remarkable population of galaxies hosting dwarf Seyfert nuclei with an unusually large broad-line region (BLR). These objects are remarkable for two reasons. Firstly, the size of the BLR can, in some cases, rival those seen in the most luminous quasars. Secondly, the size of the BLR is not correlated with the central continuum luminosity, an observation that distinguishes them from their reverberating counterparts. Collectively, these early results suggest that non-reverberating dwarf Seyferts are a heterogeneous group, and not simply scaled versions of each other. Careful inspection reveals broad H Balmer emission lines with single peaks, double peaks, and a combination of the two, suggesting that the broad emission lines are produced in kinematically distinct regions centered on the black hole (BH). Because the gravitational field strength is already known for these objects, by virtue of knowing their BH mass, the relationship between velocity and radius may be established, given a kinematic model for the BLR gas. In this way, one can determine the inner and outer radii of the BLRs by modeling the shape of their broad emission line profiles. In the present contribution, high quality spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) are used to constrain the size of the BLR in the dwarf Seyfert nuclei of M81, NGC 3998, NGC 4203, NGC 3227, NGC 4051 and NGC 3516.  相似文献

We describe H α , SCUBA and MERLIN imaging of the interacting galaxy pair NGC 4490 and 4485. We detect an H α filament emerging from the disc of NGC 4490 to a projected distance of 3 kpc which has counterparts in both the radio continuum and H  i . The H  i counterpart extends to a projected distance of ∼30 kpc from NGC 4490 and we argue that this is evidence that the giant H  i envelope in this system has its origins in star formation. We use SCUBA and radio continuum data to attempt to place constraints on the distribution of dust with respect to the star forming regions. This analysis is limited by the lack of an independent estimate of the dust temperature, something that both 'SIRTF' and 'SOFIA' will be able to provide, however we find some evidence that most obscuring dust is not located within H  ii regions themselves.  相似文献
