For the first time a biological source for the long-chain alkyl 1,14-diols and 12-hydroxy methyl alkanoates, lipids widely occurring in the marine water column and sediments, has been identified. Cultures of Proboscia indica and Proboscia alata, rhizosolenoid diatoms belonging to the widespread diatom genus Proboscia, contain C28, C28:1, C30, and C30:1 alkyl 1,14-diols, and C27 and C29 12-hydroxy methyl alkanoates as major neutral lipids. These components form a substantial fraction of lipid fractions from sediment traps or sediments, especially in areas with an elevated primary production such as upwelling regions. Examination of literature data reveals that as much as 20 to 35% of the total lipid flux in the Arabian Sea is derived from Proboscia diatoms during the start of the upwelling season. Their rapid transfer to the water-sediment interface may explain why corresponding 1,14-keto-ols, inferred oxidation products of diols, are hardly formed. These interpretations are supported by compound-specific carbon isotopic analysis of long-chain keto-ols and diols in surface sediments of the Arabian Sea. The data indicate that long-chain alkyl 1,14-diols and 12-hydroxy methyl alkanoates can be applied as indicators for high-nutrient conditions in the photic zone.  相似文献

Long chain 1,14-diols and 12-hydroxy methyl alkanoates are biomarker lipids for Proboscia diatoms and occur widely in Quaternary sediments. To determine the effect of temperature on the lipid composition of these algae, a new Proboscia sp. culture grown at 8 °C and Proboscia indica cultures grown at 18, 21, 24 and 27 °C were examined. The results were combined with lipid data from a P. indica culture and a Proboscia alata culture, grown at 20 and 2 °C, respectively, from previous studies. The data showed a strong relationship between long chain diol and 12-hydroxy methyl alkanoate composition and growth temperature, i.e. the chain length increases and the degree of unsaturation of long chain 1,14-diols decreases with increasing growth temperature. To determine the effect of temperature on Proboscia lipid compositions in natural environments, we also analyzed fossil long chain 1,14-diols and 12-hydroxy methyl alkanoates in surface sediments derived from Proboscia diatoms living in the water column of the eastern South Atlantic. The results indicate a significant relationship between sea surface temperature and chain length distribution of saturated long chain diols, but also suggest that the relative abundances of unsaturated long chain diols and 12-hydroxy methyl alkanoates in sediments are predominantly determined by factors other than temperature.  相似文献

Marine endosymbiotic heterocystous cyanobacteria make unique heterocyst glycolipids (HGs) containing pentose (C5) moieties. Functionally similar HGs with hexose (C6) moieties found in free-living cyanobacteria occur in the sedimentary record, but C5 HGs have not been documented in the natural environment. Here we developed a high performance liquid chromatography multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS2) method specific for trace analysis of long chain C5 HGs and applied it to cultures of Rhizosolenia clevei Ostenfeld and its symbiont Richelia intracellularis which were found to contain C5 HGs and no C6 HGs. The method was then applied to suspended particulate matter (SPM) and surface sediment from the Amazon plume region known to harbor marine diatoms carrying heterocystous cyanobacteria as endosymbionts. C5 HGs were detected in both marine SPM and surface sediments, but not in SPM or surface sediment from freshwater settings in the Amazon basin. Rather, the latter contained C6 HGs, established biomarkers for free-living heterocystous cyanobacteria. Our results indicate that the C5 HGs may be potential biomarkers for marine endosymbiotic heterocystous cyanobacteria.  相似文献

Lipid biomarkers in lacustrine sediments provide valuable information about lake history and environmental change. Here we report the occurrence of a unique set of lipid biomarkers from a freshwater crater lake, El Junco, in the Galápagos. In addition to previously reported alkadienes, botryococcenes and lycopadienes indicative of Botryococcus braunii A, B and L races, we find highly branched C25 isoprenoids (HBIs) from diatoms, monomethyl alkanes likely from insect epicuticular waxes, long chain alkenols, diols and a triol, keto-ols, hydroxy acids and keto acids. Saturated and mono-unsaturated long chain diols from C30-C36 had terminal hydroxyl groups and hydroxyl groups between the ω16 and ω20 positions. Vicinal diols with hydroxyl groups at ω9 and ω10 were likely from the floating fern Azolla. C30-C36 keto-ols, mid-chain hydroxy and keto acids had mid-chain functional groups at similar positions to the diols, suggesting common origins. The predominance of ω20-hydroxy acids and diols, together with 20,21-dihydroxy-nonacosanoic acid is indicative of an Azolla source, while ω16 and ω18 hydroxy acids and diols imply a microalgal source.  相似文献

The compositions of sterol, alcohol and ketone fractions from an oxic intertidal surface sediment from Corner Inlet. Victoria, Australia, have been examined by capillary gas chromatographymass spectrometry and related to the lipids of diatoms cultured from the sediment and to lipids of the sea-grass Zostera muelleri. Of the more than thirty sterols in the sediment most appear to derive from diatoms, including the major sterol 24-methylcholesta-5.22E-dien-3β-ol. Small amounts of 24-ethylcholesterol probably derive from Zostera, with a minor diatom contribution. 5α-stanols, both fully saturated and with a side-chain double bond, represented ca. 14% of the total sterols: a significant proportion of these are probably derived from marine invertebrates. These organisms also contribute C26 sterols. most of the cholesterol and possibly small amounts of Δ-sterols. The data suggest that in situ biohydrogenation of stenols was not a major process in sterol transformation in the surface oxic sediment. Alcohols ranged from C12 to C30 and showed an unusual abundance of unsaturated components with Δ9-16:1 being the major constituent. The long-chain alcohols probably originate largely from Zostera but the shorter-chain. C12-C20. alcohols are at least partly derived from wax esters of unknown origin. Diatoms do not contribute significant amounts of alcohols. Ketones were not major constituents of the sediment and consisted mainly of 6.10.14-trimethylpentadecan-2-one and a series of n-alkan-2-ones ranging from C16 to C33. The latter showed a similar distribution to that of the n-alkanes but the correspondence was not sufficient to substantiate a product-precursor relationship. Very long-chain C3- C39 unsaturated methyl and ethyl ketones, which may originate from the marine unicellular alga Emiliania huxleyi. were present in low concentration.  相似文献

Biomarker compositions of particulate organic matter (POM) from the oligotrophic Lake Brienz and the eutrophic Lake Lugano (both Switzerland) are compared, in order to obtain information about organic matter (OM) production and transformation processes in relation to water column stratification. Eutrophic conditions in Lake Lugano are reflected by enhanced alkalinity, elevated total organic carbon (TOC) and chlorin contents compared with Lake Brienz. Lower δ13C values of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in Lake Lugano reflect enhanced OM respiration in the water column.Differences in OM dynamics between both lakes, as well as seasonal variations, are evidenced by TOC-normalised concentration profiles of total fatty acids (FAs) and total neutrals. In Lake Brienz, the results reflect the relative contributions of primary productivity and refractory, allochthonous OM to POM, governed by particle load and interflows due to density stratification. The depth trends at Lake Lugano are a result of high primary productivity, water column stratification and associated particle load in the upper layers, as well as microbially induced degradation close to the chemocline and greater preservation under anoxic conditions. Minor differences exist with regard to the OM composition. In both lakes, FA distributions and the composition of n-alkanols indicate a predominant autochthonous OM source (algae, zooplankton, bacteria). Inputs of OM from diatoms are reflected in highly-branched isoprenoid (HBI) alkenes, 16:1 n-FAs and 24-methylcholesta-5,22-dien-3β-ol (either epibrassicasterol or brassicasterol). Differences in relative proportions of n-C16 vs. n-C18 FAs and alkanols, respectively, as well as in the percentages of C27, C28 and C29 sterols relative to the sum of sterols are related to differences in the abundances of chrysophytes, diatoms and green algae within the euphotic zone of both lakes as well as in bacterial activity and soil in-wash. High relative proportions of cholesterol in the autumn samples, most pronounced at Lake Lugano, were attributed to an increased input from zooplankton grazing in the water column.Differences in OM degradation processes are reflected in slightly higher chlorin index values and higher relative proportions of saturated vs. unsaturated n-FAs in Lake Lugano. Higher contents of branched chain FAs, 16:1ω7 n-FA, and enhanced 18:1ω7/18:1ω9 n-FA ratios suggest enhanced bacterial biomass in the water column of Lake Lugano close to the chemocline. Increasing proportions of saturated n-FAs and n-alkanols with increasing water depth, most distinct in the autumn for both lakes, argue for intensified bacterial activity and degradation of OM during autumn. High relative contents of sterols and low n-alkanol concentrations in POM close to the chemocline at Lake Lugano during spring are interpreted to reflect higher primary productivity in the photic zone, OM export to the deeper parts and enhanced degradation rates of more labile constituents (i.e. C13–C20 n-alkanols), as compared to Lake Brienz.  相似文献

The carbon isotope composition (δ13C values) of long chain n-alkanes in lake sediments has been considered a reliable means of tracking changes in the terrigenous contribution of plants with C3 and C4 photosynthetic pathways. A key premise is that long chain leaf wax components used for isotope analysis are derived primarily from terrigenous higher plants. The role of aquatic plants in affecting δ13C values of long chain n-alkanes in lacustrine sediments may, however, have long been underestimated. In this study, we found that a large portion of long chain n-alkanes (C27 and C29) in nearshore sediments of the Lake Qinghai catchment was contributed by submerged aquatic plants, which displayed a relatively positive carbon isotope composition (e.g. −26.7‰ to −15.7‰ for C29) similar to that of terrestrial C4 plants. Thus, the use of δ13C values of sedimentary C27 and C29 n-alkanes for tracing terrigenous vegetation composition may create a bias toward significant overestimation/underestimation of the proportion of terrestrial C4 plants. For sedimentary C31, however, the contribution from submerged plants was minor, so that the δ13C values for C31 n-alkane in surface sediments were in accord with those of the modern terrestrial vegetation in the Lake Qinghai region. Moreover, we found that changes in the δ13C values of sedimentary C27 and C29 n-alkanes were closely related to water depth variation. Downcore analysis further demonstrated the significant influence of endogenous lipids in lake sediments for the interpretation of terrestrial C4 vegetation and associated environment/climate reconstruction. In conclusion, our results suggest that the δ13C values of sedimentary long chain n-alkanes (C27, C29 and C31) may carry different environmental signals. While the δ13C values of C31 were a reliable proxy for C4/C3 terrestrial vegetation composition, the δ13C values of C27 and C29 n-alkanes may have recorded lake ecological conditions and sources of organic carbon, which might be affected by lake water depth.  相似文献

The presence of the C30 sterol gorgosterol (22,23-methylene-23,24-dimethylcholest-5-en-3ß-ol) and its analogues in some marine and freshwater environments is generally associated with invertebrate animals or dinoflagellates since there have been no reports of them in other microalgal classes. Here we show that two unialgal cultures of different species of the marine diatom Delphineis contain gorgosterol in addition to sterols more commonly found in diatoms. Our findings suggest that some reports of gorgosterol in seawater and marine sediments may well have an origin, at least in part, from diatoms.  相似文献

The Holocene successions of numerous shallow lakes located along the Coorong coastal plain in South Australia attest to the impact of rising sea level and changing climate on their depositional environment. Old Man Lake is one of the smallest perennial alkaline lakes in the region. Its succession comprises a basal lagoonal sand rich in humic organic matter (OM) overlain by a 3.7 m thick upward shoaling lacustrine mudstone. The latter features three discrete sapropel units deposited between 3270 and 4910 cal yr BP, a time of increasing aridity throughout southeastern Australia. A core taken from the lake’s eastern margin yielded sedimentological, mineralogical, geochronological and micropaleontological data. Coring at five other sites across the lake provided sections of the humic and sapropelic facies (n = 20) for total organic carbon and Rock–Eval analysis; isotopic characterization of their micritic carbonate (δ13Ccarb, δ18Ocarb) and co-existing OM (δ13Corg); and GC–MS and GC–irMS analysis of their free aliphatic hydrocarbons. For each ‘sapropel event’ high productivity of diatoms and green algae was the principal driver of the accumulation and preservation of OM in such high concentrations. The precursor algal blooms were likely triggered by the influx of fresh water following winter rainfall. The combination of kerogen hydrogen index and δ13Ccarbδ13Corg, previously employed to track secular changes in algal productivity and organic preservation, proved useful in identifying synchronous geographic differences in these processes across the lake. Highly branched isoprenoids (HBI: C25:1  C20:0) are prominent components of the aliphatic hydrocarbons in the sapropels, confirming the significant contribution of diatoms to their OM. The C isotopic signatures of the principal C25:1 HBI isomer and the co-occurring C23–C31 odd carbon numbered n-alkanes further document the non-uniformity of biomass preservation within and between the three sapropel units. The evidence from this study suggests that seasonal algal blooms and meromixis, although not necessarily an anoxic hypoliminion, were required for sapropel formation in the Holocene lakes of the Coorong region. Higher resolution sampling, dating and comparative analysis (microfossil, biomarker and isotopic) of these sapropels is required to clarify their potential significance as palaeoclimate proxies.  相似文献

The chemical composition of Cretaceous leaf remains showing exceptionally well preserved cuticles was investigated using pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC–MS) and thermally assisted hydrolysis methylation (THM)-GC–MS. Samples of Coniferales (Frenelopsis) and Ginkgoales (Nehvizdya penalveri) leaf remains were collected from freshwater and coastal marine depositional environments. Material for pyrolysis included (i) untreated leaves and cuticles obtained after extraction from mineral rock matrix and bleaching, (ii) kerogen fraction from both materials, (iii) non-hydrolysable fraction from kerogen. The THM-GC–MS data from untreated leaves and bleached cuticles show that the fossil cuticle geopolymer essentially released aliphatic components upon thermal treatment, with a dominance of fatty acids (FAs) and n-alkanes/n-alkenes. The FAs are essentially resistant to bleaching and remain after solvent extraction. They occur mainly as short chain compounds ranging from C6 to C16 and with maximum abundance at C8–C9. The n-alkanes/n-alkenes from kerogen and the non-hydrolysable residue occur mainly as short chain compounds in the range C10–C16, with the highest abundance at C9–C12. The THM-GC–MS pyrograms of the fossil cuticles differ from those of cutan from fresh living plants. They support the preservation model via polymerization of monomers derived from cutin or from unsaturated cell FAs.  相似文献

The occurrence of long chain chloroalkenes and chloroalkanes has not been previously reported in natural sediments. Here we report the presence of long chain (C30–C36) n-chloroalkanes and chloroalkenes in the recent sediments of the only permanent freshwater lake in the Galápagos Islands, El Junco. Both chloroalkanes and chloroalkenes have a chlorine atom at the terminal position. The cis and trans alkenyl chlorides have double bonds near the middle of the hydrocarbon chain (ω15, 16, 17). Alkenes in the lake sediments are typically C23:1 to C27:1, substantially shorter than the chloroalkenes and chloroalkanes. The lipid chain lengths and the positions of functional groups imply a structural relationship between chloroalkenes and some alkenols, diols and (or) hydroxy acids that most likely derive from algae.  相似文献

An isobathic transect of marine surface sediments from 1°N to 28°S off southwest Africa was used to further evaluate the potential of the chain length distribution and carbon stable isotope composition of higher plant n-alkanes as proxies for continental vegetation and climate conditions. We found a strong increase in the n-C29–33 weighted mean average δ13C values from −33‰ near the equator to around −26‰ further south. Additionally, C25–35 n-alkanes reveal a southward trend of increasing average chain length from 30.0 to 30.5. The data reflect the changing contribution of plants employing different photosynthetic pathways (C3 and C4) and/or being differently influenced by the environmental conditions of their habitat. The C4 plant proportions calculated from the data (ca. 20% for rivers draining the rainforest, to ca. 70% at higher latitude) correspond to the C4 plant abundance in continental catchment areas postulated by considering prevailing wind systems and river outflows. Furthermore, the C4 plant contribution to the sediments correlates with the mean annual precipitation and aridity at selected continental locations in the postulated catchment areas, suggesting that the C4 plant fraction in marine sediments can be used to assess these environmental parameters.  相似文献

Most research on long chain methyl ketones has focused on their origins and distributions. Their application in paleoclimate studies is less common than that of other n-alkyl lipids. The goal of this research was to explore this potential by studying n-alkan-2-ones from the Hani peat sequence in northeastern China. They were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and showed a distribution ranging from C19 to C31 with a strong odd/even predominance. This type of distribution is considered to derive from Sphagum and microbial oxidation of n-alkanes. Comparison with climate sensitive indicators and macrofossil analysis shows that microbial oxidation of n-alkanes derived from higher plants was enhanced during the warm early Holocene period. This led us to develop three n-alkan-2-one proxies - C27/ΣC23-31 (C27/HMW-KET), carbon preference index (CPIH-KET) and average chain length (ACL(27-31)-KET) - as possible indicators of paleoclimate in the peat-forming environment. These proxies, in combination with C27n-alkane δD values and peat cellulose δ18O records, might allow examination of paleo-ecosystem behavior during climatic evolution in northeastern China over the past 16,000 yr.  相似文献

Eocene sediments recovered from the Lomonosov Ridge in the central Arctic Ocean during Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 302 contain high amounts of fossil remains of the free floating freshwater fern Azolla. Both extant Azolla and the sediments from the Arctic Azolla interval were found to contain relatively high quantities of compounds identified as 1,ω20 C30–C36 diols. Furthermore, structurally related mid-chain hydroxy fatty acids, long chain n-alkanols and keto-ols were discovered. The different series have a common feature: there is always a hydroxy group at the ω20 position. In addition, structurally related C29 ω20,ω21 diols, C29 1,20,21 triols, C29 dihydroxy fatty acids as well as a series of wax esters containing these mono- and dihydroxy lipids are reported. Selective extraction of Azolla surface lipids revealed that these compounds are most likely present in the leaf waxes of the fern. The suite of long-chain, mid-chain ω20 hydroxy wax constituents is described for the first time. As they are well preserved in the Eocene sediments, these lipids may serve as palaeo-environmental indicators of the Arctic Azolla interval and as markers for the past occurrence of Azolla in general.  相似文献

This paper reports on the spatial distribution patterns and investigates the controlling mechanisms of phytoplankton biomarkers (brassicasterol for diatoms, alkenones for haptophytes, dinosterol for dinoflagellates) and terrestrial biomarkers (odd C number long-chain (C27 + C29 + C31) n-alkanes) in surface sediments from the southern Yellow Sea (SYS). The contents of the phytoplankton biomarkers in the SYS surface sediments reveals a clear spatial pattern, with low values near the coasts and increased values seaward, caused by higher phytoplankton primary productivity and low sedimentation rates in the basin. The contents of terrestrial biomarkers show high values in the northern part of the study areas off the Shandong Peninsula and Jiangsu coast, caused by inputs of materials from the modern Huanghe River and the old Huanghe delta, respectively. The results also indicate that biomarker ratios offer the best approach for reconstructing marginal sea C cycles, as these proxies can be used to estimate the contributions of both terrestrial and marine organic matter and to reconstruct paleoproductivity and paleoecological changes in the SYS.  相似文献

Carbon isotope ratio (δ13Corg) values of organic matter in lake sediments are commonly used to reconstruct environmental change, but the factors which influence change are varied and complex. Here we report δ13C values for sediments from Erlongwan maar lake in northeast China. In this record, changes in δ13C cannot be explained by simple changes in aquatic productivity. Instead, values were likely influenced by differences in the ratio between planktonic and benthic algae, as indicated by the remains of diatoms. This is because the variation of δ13Corg in algae from different habitats is controlled by the thickness of the diffusive boundary layer, which is dependent on the turbulence of the water. Compared with benthic algae, which grow in relatively still water, pelagic algae are exposed to greater water movement. This is known to dramatically reduce the thickness of the boundary layer and was found to cause even more severe δ13C depletion. In Erlongwan maar lake, low values were linked to the dominance of planktonic diatoms during the period commonly known as the Medieval Warm Period. Values gradually increased with the onset of the Little Ice Age, which we interpret as being driven by an increase in the proportion of benthic taxa, due to effect of the colder climate. The increase in planktonic diatoms at the end of the Little Ice Age, linked to higher temperature and a reduction in ice cover, resulted in a further decline in δ13Corg.  相似文献

Future climatic conditions may coincide with an increased potential for wildfires in grassland and forest ecosystems, whereby charred biomass would be incorporated into soils. Molecular changes in biomass upon charring have been frequently analysed with a focus on black carbon. Aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, known to be liberated during incomplete combustion of biomass have been preferentially analysed in soot particles, whereas determinations of these compounds in charred biomass residues are scarce. We discuss the influence of increasing charring temperature on the aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbon composition of crop grass combustion residues. Straw from rye, representing C3 grasses and maize, representing C4 grasses, was charred in the presence of limited oxygen at 300, 400 and 500 °C. Typical n-alkane distribution patterns with a strong predominance of long chain odd-numbered n-alkanes maximising at C31 were observed in raw straw. Upon combustion at 300 °C aliphatic hydrocarbons in char were dominated by sterenes, whereas at 400 °C sterenes disappeared and medium chain length n-alkanes, maximising around n-C20, with a balanced odd/even distribution were present. At a charring temperature of 500 °C n-alkane chain length shifted to short chain homologues, maximising at C18 with a pronounced predominance of even homologues. Even numbered, short chain n-alkanes in soils may thus serve as a marker for residues of charred biomass. Aromatic hydrocarbons indicate an onset of aromatization of biomass already at 300 °C, followed by severe aromatization upon incomplete combustion at 400–500 °C. The diagnostic composition of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons from charred biomass affords potential for identifying residues from burned vegetation in recent and fossil soils and sediments.  相似文献

Leaf wax components of terrestrial plants are an important source of biomass in the geological records of soils, lakes and marine sediments. Relevant to the emerging use of plant wax derived biomarkers as proxies for past vegetation composition this study provides key data for C3 plants of tropical and subtropical Africa. We present analytical results for 45 savanna species and 24 rain forest plants sampled in their natural habitats. Contents and distribution patterns of long chain n-alkanes (n-C25 to n-C35) and n-alkan-1-ols (n-C24 to n-C34) as well as bulk and molecular carbon isotopic data are presented. The variations of the analysed parameters among different growth forms (herb, shrub, liana and tree) are small within the vegetation zones, whereas characteristic differences occur between the signatures of rain forest and savanna plants. Therefore, we provide averaged histogram representations for rain forest and savanna C3 plants. The findings were compared to previously published data of typical C4 grass waxes of tropical and subtropical Africa. Generally, trends to longer n-alkane chains and less negative carbon isotopic values are evident from rain forest over C3 savanna to C4 vegetation. For n-alkanols of rain forest plants the maximum of the averaged distribution pattern is between those of C3 savanna plants and C4 grasses. The averaged presentations for tropical and subtropical vegetation and their characteristics may constitute useful biomarker proxies for studies analysing the expansion and contraction of African vegetation zones.  相似文献

Individual neutral lipids, including hydrocarbons, ketones, alcohols, sterols, keto-ols and diols have been analysed from eight horizons in a sediment core taken from the Santa Catalina Basin, Calif. Variations in the concentration of individual lipid components between sites are studied using factor analysis to determine their inputs. Several sources of organic material are postulated from the composition of hypothetical factors, including methanogenic bacteria, higher plants and algae including coccolithophores, dinoflagellates and diatoms. Sources for long chain keto-ols and diols and a C35 bicyclic alkene are suggested as methanogenic bacteria and algae respectively.  相似文献

The exact biological source of the C20 highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) present in sediments from aquatic systems is unclear. We therefore examined the relationship between the distribution of fossil diatoms and the concentration of the C20 HBI in a Late Glacial sedimentary record from the Hässeldala Port paleolake in southern Sweden. Using Bayesian multiple linear regression analysis, we show that its concentration is linked primarily to the production of the diatom taxon Gomphonema acuminatum, which accounts for the largest proportion of the temporal variability in the biomarker. By analogy with modern observations, we argue that an increasing amount of G. acuminatum biomass in our sedimentary record reflects increasing oligotrophy in the paleolake during the summer growing season, especially at times defined by subdued hydrologic flow. Our conclusions are corroborated by the δ13C composition of the C20 HBI biomarker, which points to a negative photosynthetic fractionation between atmospheric CO2 and the pool of dissolved inorganic carbon during diatom bloom, a distinct phenomenon at times of inhibited hydrological flow. Accordingly, we suggest that the C20 HBI biomarker can be effectively used to reconstruct the trophic state of the paleolake at Hässeldala Port, while its stable isotope composition can provide physicochemical information about the lake conditions during the dry summer season. Moreover, we note that the major hydrological shifts recorded in the G. acuminatum-C20 HBI stratigraphy do not coincide with the pollen zone boundaries. We thus infer that aquatic and terrestrial environmental responses to climate change are substantially decoupled through the hydrological system, which highlights the necessity for multi-proxy investigations to decipher past climate events.  相似文献
