—The atmospheric surface layer over land may behave differently in the tropics, particu larly during the monsoon. A preliminary attempt is made to observe the behavior of surface layer characteristics such as fluxes of momentum, sensible heat and latent heat, friction velocity, friction temperature, M-O length scale, Richardson number and Bowen’s ratio over Kharagpur (22°20′N, 87°18′E), a typical moist tropical station. The diurnal and day-to-day variations have been studied. It is observed that during the active phase of the monsoon the sensible heat flux and Bowen’s ratio are low. The diurnal variation is apparent for most parameters. Mostly near neutral conditions are observed.  相似文献

— Urban terrain poses a challenge for modeling air pollutant diffusion. In tropics, because of the dominant low wind speed environment, the importance of understanding the turbulence diffusion is even more critical, and uncertain. The objective of this study is to estimate the vertical eddy diffusivity of an urban, tropical atmosphere in low–wind speeds. Turbulence measurements at 1 Hz were made at 4-m level over an urban terrain with a roughness length of 0.78 m during winter months. Eddy diffusivity is estimated from spectral quantities of the turbulence data involving turbulent kinetic energy (E) and its dissipation rate (?). The spectral information of the vertical velocity fluctuations is used to estimate the vertical length scale which provides information on the eddy diffusivity. In addition, the product of friction velocity and the vertical length scale has been used to non-dimensionalize the eddy diffusivity, which is shown to increase with increasing instability. Using the eddy diffusivity (K) estimates from the E? approach, a relation is suggested for the mixing length based eddy diffusivity models of the form: K = c w .[2.5 ? 0.5(z/L)], where z is the measurement height, L is the Obukhov length, and c w has an average value close to 1 for unstable and near 0.5 for stable conditions for the urban terrains.  相似文献

From a Fourier analysis of the monthly mean values of the northern hemispheric geopotential heights at 30 and 50 mb levels, for the period 1972–1979, the transports of momentum and of sensible heat, and the energy conversion terms,C(K E ,K Z ) andC(A Z ,A E ), have been computed along 30°N and 60°N latitutudes. The variation in these dynamical parameters at 60°N, in relation to monsoon activity in low latitudes and the easterly and westerly phases of the QBO over Gan Island, suggest that a coupling may exist between the high-latitude stratospheric changes and low-latitude monsoon activity and that the low-latitude stratospheric activity modulates high-latitude circulation, confirming the results obtained byHolton andTan (1980) and byLabitzke (1983). The study of the low-latitude stratospheric changes in relation to the high-latitude warmings also indicates a linkage between the low- and high-latitude features  相似文献

We present the distribution of226Ra in eight vertical profiles from the eastern Pacific. The profiles are located along a meridional trend near 125°W, from 43°S to 29°N. Surface226Ra concentrations are about 7 dpm/100 kg, except for the two stations south of 30°S where the higher values are due to the Antarctic influence. Deep waters show a distinctive south-to-north increase in the226Ra content, from about 26 to 41 dpm/100 kg near the bottom. Unlike in the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans, the effect of226Ra injection from bottom sediments is clearly discernible in the area. The presence of this primary226Ra can be traced up to at least 1–1.5 km above the ocean floor, making this part of the sea bed among the strongest source regions for the oceanic226Ra. Numerical solutions of a two-dimensional vertical advection-diffusion model applied to the deep (1.2–4 km)226Ra data give the following set of best fits: upwelling velocity(Vz) = 3.5m/yr, vertical eddy diffusivity(Kz) = 0.6cm2/s, horizontal (north-south) eddy diffusivity(Ky) = 1 × 107cm2/s, and water-column regeneration flux of226Ra(J) = 3.3 × 10?5dpmkg?1yr?1 as an upper limit. These parametric values are in general agreement with one-dimensional (vertical) model fits for the Ra-Ba system. However, consideration of226Ra balance leads us to suspect the appropriateness of describing the vertical exchange processes in the eastern Pacific with constantVz and Kz. If future modeling is attempted, it may be preferable to treat the area as a diffusion-dominant mixing regime with depth-dependent diffusivities.  相似文献

Monsoon water cycle is the lifeline to over 60 per cent of the world’s population. Throughout history, the monsoon-related calamities of droughts and floods have determined the life pattern of people. The association of Green House Gases (GHGs) particularly Carbon dioxide (CO2) with monsoon has been greatly debated amongst the scientific community in the past. The effect of CO2 on the monsoon rainfall over the Indian–Indonesian region (8–30°N, 65°–100°E) is being investigated using satellite data. The correlation coefficient (Rxy) between CO2 and monsoon is analysed. The Rxy is not significantly positive over a greater part of the study region, except a few regions. The inter-annual anomalies of CO2 is identified for playing a secondary role to influencing monsoon while other phenomenon like ENSO might be exerting a much greater influence.  相似文献

We present 9 bottom222Rn profiles measured from the western and southern Indian Ocean during the 1977–1978 GEOSECS expedition. These profiles can be grouped into three cypes: one-layer, two-layer, and irregular types. The one-layer profiles with quasi-exponential distributions allow one to estimate the apparent vertical eddy diffusivity,Kv, with a simple model. The two-layer profiles show that there is a benthic boundary layer of the order of 50–100 m in which the excess222Rn distribution shows a vertical gradient much smaller than that of the layer immediately above. Within the boundary layer, the STD potential temperature (θ) and density(σ4) profiles are practically constant, and theKv values are of the order of 1000 cm2/s. The STD profiles for the water column above the boundary layer show gradients of increasing stability, and theKv values are of the order of 100 cm2/s. Modeling of the Rn data in the water column above the boundary layer indicates that there is a transition layer which effectively reduces the penetration of excess Rn from the benthic boundary layer into the upper layer.Sarmiento et al. [10] have shown that the buoyancy gradient or stability is inversely correlated with the apparent vertical eddy diffusivity, and the resulting buoyancy flux is fairly uniform, ranging from 1 to 14 × 10?6 cm2/s3 in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, Sarmiento et al. [11] show that a much higher buoyancy flux is associated with an intensified flow of the bottom water through a passage. In the Indian Ocean basins, we have found that the buoyancy flux has a comparable range (3–14 × 10?6 cm2/s3), except for a couple of stations where both stability and apparent vertical diffusivity are higher, resulting in a much higher buoyancy flux, probably indicative of rapid bottom water flow.  相似文献

We have conducted RASS (Radio Acoustic Sounding System) observations with the MU (Middle and Upper atmosphere) radar on 28–31 July 1994 at Shigaraki, Japan (34°51′ N, 136°06′ E) and determined the characteristics of turbulence energy dissipation rate (ε) and vertical eddy diffusivity (K) in the troposphere and lower stratosphere. We have first examined the accuracy of the Brunt Väisälä frequency squared (N2) derived from RASS temperature profiles. Then, ε and K are determined by using N2 and the Doppler spectral width of turbulence echoes (σ2turb). We found that the structures of ε and K are sometimes affected by the local variations of N2. We found that sometimes ε became small, even though σ2turb was large, because N2 was small. On the contrary, K was enhanced due to small N2, although σ2turb was small.  相似文献

This study concludes that the elongation axis (K 1) of the ellipsoid of anisotropic magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is a suitable proxy for flow axis in ashflow tuffs. 153 oriented samples (176 specimens) were studied from 18 sites in the 1.1 Ma Tshirege member of the Bandelier Tuff. These sites are distributed around the Valles caldera at distances of 5–25 km outside of the rim.K 1 axes correlate well with postulated radial flow axes at 13 sites.K 1 also agrees with measured geological flow indicators, mainly imbricated larger clasts, at 7 sites. At 2 of the 5 sites where significant disagreement is seen between theoretical radial flow directions and measuredK 1 axes, theK 1 axes correspond well with geological flow indicators, indicating that the divergence of flow from the predicted radial flow pattern is real. Two major topographic buttresses are suggested as the cause of flow divergence for the Tshirege ash flows: the San Pedro buttress northwest of the caldera, and the San Miguel buttress in the southeast. In situK 1 axes plunge about 7° toward the source at two-thirds of the sites; therefore the plunge ofK 1 is a plausible in situ indicator for thedirection of flow. Multiple flow zones in sections of several meters thickness indicate changes of flow direction that are both rapid and large during ash-flow emplacement. These observations raisre the question of how best to represent ‘mean’ flow directions in ash-flow sheets: by eigenvector methods, by vector-sum methods, or by modes. A method for measuring imbrication of larger clasts using apparent dips in vertical joints is outlined. Imbrication, determined in this way at one-third of the sites, dips toward the source, i.e., up-flow. The minimum (K 3) axis of the AMS ellipsoid correlates with the flow foliation rather than with the larger clast imbrication. The flow axes of ash flows correspond with theK 1 axes, not with the declination ofK 3 axes as suggested by some authors. Initial dip of the sampled ash flows is not large and does not affect the paleomagnetic remanence direction, which is reversed with a mean ofD=173.5°,I=-38.4°, α95=3.4°N=18. This mean is not different at the 95% confidence level from that of earlier workers. The mean pole, at 098.0°E, 74.8°N,A 95=3.3°,N=18, is about 15° far-sided relative to the expected time-averaged geomagnetic pole, suggesting a history of emplacement too short to adequately average secular variation.  相似文献

The behavior of the F2 layer at sunrise has been studied based on vertical-incidence ionospheric sounding data in Almaty (76°55′E, 43°15′N). Records with small amplitudes of electron density background fluctuations were selected in order to exactly estimate the onsets of a pronounced increase in the electron density at different altitudes. It has been indicated that the electron density growth rate is a function of altitude; in this case, the growth rate at the F2 layer maximum is much lower than such values at fixed altitudes of ~30–55 km below the layer maximum. The solar zenith angle (χ) and the blanketing layer thickness (h 0) at the beginning of a pronounced increase in the electron density at altitude h are linearly related to the h value, and these quantities vary within ~90° < χ < 100° and 180 km < h 0 < 260 km, respectively.  相似文献

Cushion is a layer of granular materials between the raft and the ground. The shear behavior of the interface between the cushion and the raft may influence the seismic performance of the superstructure. In order to quantify such influences, horizontal shear tests on the interfaces between different cushion materials and concrete raft under monotonic and cyclic loading were carried out. The vertical pressure P_v, material type and cushion thickness h_c were taken as variables. Conclusions include: 1) under monotonic loading, P_v is the most significant factor; the shear resistance P_(hmax) increases as P_v increases, but the normalized factor of resistance μ_n has an opposite tendency; 2) for the materials used in this study, μ_n varies from 0.40 to 0.70, the interface friction angle δ_s varies from 20° to 35°, while u_(max) varies from 3 mm to 15 mm; 3) under cyclic loading, the interface behavior can be abstracted as a "three-segment" back-bone curve, the main parameters include μ_n, the displacement u_1 and stiffness K_1 of the elastic stage, the displacement u_2 and stiffness K_2 of the plastic stage; 4) by observation and statistical analysis, the significance of different factors, together with values of K_1, K_2 and μ_n have been obtained.  相似文献

A study of the inter-annual variability of the warming of the southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS) during the spring transition months was carried out from 2013 to 2015 based on in situ data from moored buoys. An attempt was made to identify the roles of the different variables in the warming of the SEAS (e.g., net heat flux, advection, entrainment, and thickness of the barrier layer during the previous northeast monsoon season). The intense freshening of the SEAS (approximately 2 PSU) occurring in each December, together with the presence of a downwelling Rossby wave, supports the formation of a thick barrier layer during the northeast monsoon season. It is known that the barrier layer thickness, varying each year, plays a major role in the spring warming of the SEAS. Interestingly, an anomalously thick barrier layer occurred during the northeast monsoon season of 2012–2013. However, the highest sea surface temperature (31 °C) was recorded during the last week of April 2015, while the lowest sea surface temperature (29.7 °C) was recorded during the last week of May 2013. The mixed layer heat budget analysis during the spring transition months proved that the intense warming has been mainly supported by the net heat flux, not by other factors like advection and entrainment. The inter-annual variability analysis of the net heat flux and its components, averaged over a box region of the SEAS, showed a substantial latent heat flux release and a reduction in net shortwave radiation in 2013. Both factors contributed to the negative net heat flux. Strong breaks in the warming were also observed in May due to the entrainment of cold sub-surface waters. These events are associated with the cyclonic eddy persisting over the SEAS during the same time. The entrainment term, favoring the cooling, was stronger in 2015 than that in 2013 and 2014. The surface temperatures measured in 2013 were lower than those in 2014 and 2015 despite the presence of a thick barrier layer. The substantial decrease in net heat flux along with entrainment cooling has been identified as causes for this behavior.  相似文献

In this paper, the ionospheric electron content (IEC) profile features, have been utilized for extraction of a few parameters and the parameters are used for assertion of a certain day as quiet (Q) or disturbed (D). The IEC values taken for the study cover two solar activity periods (high and low) and are based on VHF RB data collected over Guwahati (26.2°N, 91.75°E). The paper describes methods for extraction of parameters like profile factor, P and anomaly factor, PEA from IEC profiles separately for three seasons (summer, winter and equinox). The definitions of Q and D days are made through profile features and the threshold values of ΣKp for each season are evaluated. The relations between ΣKp and P factor, ΣKp and PEA are established after corrections for solar activity condition. The prediction and assertion of Q/D days are then made by examining IEC profiles for the cases where IEC data were not used for the parameter extraction.  相似文献

Multi-phase long-period t* measurements are among the key evidences for the frequency-dependent mantle attenuation factor, Q. However, similarly to Q, poorly constrained variations of Earth’s structure may cause spurious frequency-dependent effects in the observed t*. By using an attenuation-coefficient approach which incorporates measurements of geometric spreading (GS), such effects can be isolated and removed. The results show that the well-known increase of body P-wave t* from ~0.2 s at short periods to ~1–2 s at long periods may be caused by a small and positive bias in the underlying GS, which is measured by a dimensionless parameter γ*?≈?0.06. Similarly to the nearly constant t* at teleseismic distances, this GS bias is practically range-independent and interpreted as caused by velocity heterogeneity within the crust and uppermost mantle. This bias is accumulated within a relatively thin upper part of the lithosphere and may be closely related to the crustal body-wave GS parameter γ?~?4–60 mHz reported earlier. After a correction for γ, P-wave t P * becomes equal ~0.18 s at all frequencies. By using conventional dispersion relations, this value also accounts for ~40 % of the dispersion-related delay in long-period travel times. For inner-core attenuation, the attenuation coefficient shows a distinctly different increase with frequency, which is remarkably similar to that of fluid-saturated porous rock. As a general conclusion, after the GS is accounted for, no absorption-band type or frequency-dependent upper-mantle Q is required for explaining the available t* and velocity dispersion observations. The meaning of this Q is also clarified as the frequency-dependent part of the attenuation coefficient. At the same time, physically justified theories of elastic-wave attenuation within the Earth are still needed. These conclusions agree with recent re-interpretations of several surface, body and coda-wave attenuation datasets within a broad range of frequencies.  相似文献

The thermal expansion of stishovite has been determined by an X-ray camera technique in a temperature range of 18 – 600°C at an atmospheric pressure. The thermal-expansion coefficients along the crystallographic a- and c-axes at 300 K are αa = (6.0 ± 0.6) · 10?6K?1 and αc = (1.4 ± 0.5) · 10?6K?1, respectively. The volume coefficient at 300 K is αν = (13.5 ± 0.6) · 10?6K?1.  相似文献

The calculation of fade margin required for 99.99% of the time availability of satellite link requires the knowledge of rain height. There is a shortage of results on rain height over Malaysian equatorial stations. The results on rain height in relation to 0 °C isotherm height (Hi) over four stations are presented. The variations of 0 °C isotherm heights for two monsoon seasons have been studied based on an analysis of radiosonde. The exceedence probability statistics of rain height are compared between the two seasons.  相似文献

Vertical eddy diffusivities (Kv's) have been estimated at fourteen widely separated locations from fourteen222Rn profiles and two228Ra profiles measured near the ocean floor as part of the Atlantic and Pacific GEOSECS programs. They show an inverse proportionality to the local buoyancy gradient [(g/?)(??pot/?z)] calculated from hydrographic measurements. The negative of the constant of proportionality is the buoyancy flux [?Kv(g/?)(??pot/?z)] which has a mean of ?4 × 10?6 cm2/sec3. Our results suggest that the buoyancy flux varies very little near the ocean floor. Kv's for the interior of the deep Pacific calculated from the relationship Kv = (4 × 10?6cm2/sec3)/[(g/?)(??pot/?z)] agree well with published estimates. Kv's calculated for the pycnocline are one to two orders of magnitude smaller than upper limits estimated from tritium and7Be distributions.Heat fluxes calculated with the model Kv's obtained from the222Rn profiles average 31 μcal cm?2 sec?1 in the Atlantic Ocean and 8 μcal cm?2 sec?1 in the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Spontaneous bilateral mode II shear ruptures were nucleated on faults in photoelastic Homalite plates loaded in uniaxial compression. Rupture velocities were measured and the interaction between the rupture front and short fault branches was observed using high-speed digital photography. Fault branches were formed by machining slits of varying lengths that intersected the fault plane over a range of angles. These branches were frictionless because they did not close under static loading prior to shear rupture nucleation. Three types of behavior were observed. First, the velocity of both rupture fronts was unaffected when the fault branches were oriented 45° to the main slip surface and the length of the branches were less than or equal to ~0.75 R0* (where R0* is the slip-weakening distance in the limit of low rupture speed and an infinitely long slip-pulse). Second, rupture propagation stopped at the branch on the compressive side of the rupture tip but was unaffected by the branch on the tensile side when the branches were ~1.5 R0* in length and remained oriented 45° to the principle slip surface. Third, branches on the tensile side of the rupture tip nucleated tensile ``wing tip' extensions when the branches were oriented at 70° to the interface. Third, when the branches were oriented at 70° to the interface, branches on the tensile side of the rupture tip nucleated tensile ``wing-crack' extensions. We explain these observations using a model in which the initial uniaxial load produces stress concentrations at the tips of the branches, which perturb the initial stress field on the rupture plane. These stress perturbations affect both the resolved shear stress driving the rupture and the fault-normal stress that controls the fault strength, and together they explain the observed changes in rupture speed.  相似文献

Two end-member types of pyroclastic density current are commonly recognized: pyroclastic surges are dilute currents in which particles are carried in turbulent suspension and pyroclastic flows are highly concentrated flows. We provide scaling relations that unify these end-members and derive a segregation mechanism into basal concentrated flow and overriding dilute cloud based on the Stokes number (ST), the stability factor (ΣT) and the dense-dilute condition (DD). We recognize five types of particle behaviors within a fluid eddy as a function of ST and ΣT: (1) particles sediment from the eddy, (2) particles are preferentially settled out during the downward motion of the eddy, but can be carried during its upward motion, (3) particles concentrate on the periphery of the eddy, (4) particles settling can be delayed or ‘fast-tracked’ as a function of the eddy spatial distribution, and (5) particles remain homogeneously distributed within the eddy. We extend these concepts to a fully turbulent flow by using a prototype of kinetic energy distribution within a full eddy spectrum and demonstrate that the presence of different particle sizes leads to the density stratification of the current. This stratification may favor particle interactions in the basal part of the flow and DD determines whether the flow is dense or dilute. Using only intrinsic characteristics of the current, our model explains the discontinuous features between pyroclastic flows and surges while conserving the concept of a continuous spectrum of density currents.  相似文献

Some 50 oriented samples (120 specimens) have been collected on eight sites of volcanic rocks from the Lower Devonian Dalhousie Group of northern New Brunswick and Devonian andesitic to basic dykes from central New Brunswick. Univectorial and occasional multivectorial components were extracted from the various samples. Results after AF and thermal demagnetization compare relatively well. In the volcanics and tuffs, two components of magnetization have been isolated: A (D = 33°, I = ?58°, α95 = 7.3°, K = 236) for four sites and B (D = 66°, I = +53°) for three sites. The grouping of component A is improved after tilt correction but the fold test is not significantly positive at the 95% confidence level. Component A is interpreted as being primary while component B is unresolved and appears to be the resultant magnetization of a Late Paleozoic and a recent component. The pole position obtained for tilt corrected component A is 268°E, 1°S, dp = 6.5°, dm = 8.8°. The paleolatitude calculated for component A is 39°S. The paleopole of in situ component A is located close to those of the Early-Middle Devonian formations from Quebec, New Brunswick and New England states while the paleopole of tilt-corrected component A is similar to Lower Devonian poles of rock units from the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. If component A is primary (as we believe it to be), then the western half of the northern Appalachians had already docked onto the North American Craton by Early Devonian time. Alternatively, if component A is secondary the same conclusion applies but the juxtaposition took place in Middle Devonian time.  相似文献

Persistent weak temperature stratification characterizes the epilimnion of Lake Opeongo, Ontario, Canada, and reduces the magnitude of turbulent mixing. Throughout July and August 2009, the epilimnion was isothermal for only 34 % of the record, while for 28 % of the record there was at least a 2 °C temperature difference across the 5 m deep epilimnion. During these stratified periods, there were increases in gradient Richardson numbers (Ri g ), and decreases in rates of dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy ( $\varepsilon$ ), the turbulence activity parameter (I = εN 2), an indicator of active mixing, and vertical eddy diffusivity (K z ) inferred from temperature microstructure profiles. During periods of shear induced mixing, values of ε approached 10?6 m2 s?3 and decreased during periods of increasing Ri g . For 0 < Ri g  < 1, average values of I were ~1,000 and values of K z were slightly higher than 10?4 m2 s?1. For Ri g >1, average values of I were ~300 and K z was reduced by one to three orders of magnitude. Mixing during cold fronts occurred over time scales of minutes to hours, which worked to erode diurnal thermoclines. However, during periods of persistent secondary thermoclines, mixing was suppressed throughout the epilimnion.  相似文献
