Turbulence in planetary atmospheres leads to both fluctuating and systematic errors in atmospheric profiles derived from Doppler measurements during radio occultation. If the upper atmospheres of Venus and Jupiter are about as turbulent as the earth's troposphere, we deduce rms fractional errors in temperature and pressure of less than ~ 10?2 for the Mariner 10 and Pioneer 10/11 occultation experiments. Fractional systematic errors are typically of the order of 10?6. These estimates depende rather weakly on quantities characterizing the atmosphere and the occultation, and it is conjectured that turbulence-induced errors in atmospheric profiles derived from Doppler measurements are always very small in the weak scattering limit  相似文献

A generalized wave-optical theory of stellar occultations by a turbulent planetary atmosphere is developed. The finite scale height of the atmosphere is retained for the first time. It is found that the finite scale height of the atmosphere affects the scintillations observed during the occultation in a number of ways which are most easily understood in terms of an effective Fresnel scale. We demonstrate the validity of a phase-changing screen approximation for occultation by a turbulent atmosphere in parameter ranges of general interest. Using this approximation various statistical properties of the fluctuating intensity are calculated explicitly. We present expressions for the total scintillation power, correlation function of the intensity, the cross-correlation at two frequencies, and its application to refractivity determinations. All of these expressions are given as a function of occultation depth and of parameters of the mean atmosphere and turbulence.  相似文献

Spacecraft radio occultation measurements planned for outer planet missions may yield profiles in height of atmospheric refractivity and microwave loss above the super-refractive regions of the giant planets. In a planetary ionosphere, the refractivity determines the electron number density distribution. At lower levels, the loss and the refractivity may be used to study the density, pressure, temperature and composition of the atmosphere. In order to maximize the scientific yield of outer planet occultation experiments, it is necessary to consider the effects of atmospheric refraction, multipath propagation, navigation errors and spacecraft accelerations in the design of the radio system and the spacecraft attitude control system.  相似文献

Power spectra of phase and intensity scintillations during occultation by turbulent planetary atmospheres are significantly affected by the inhomogeneous background upon which the turbulence is superimposed. Such coupling is particularly pronounced in the intensity, where there is also a marked difference in spectral shape between a central and a grazing occultation. While the former has its structural features smoothed by coupling to the inhomogeneous background, such features are enhanced in the latter. Indeed, the latter power spectrum peaks around the characteristic frequency that is determined by the size of the free-space Fresnel zone and the ray velocity in the atmosphere; at higher frequencies strong fringes develop in the power spectrum. A confrontation between the theoretical scintillation spectra computed here and those calculated from the Mariner 5 Venus mission by R. Woo, A. Ishimaru, and W. B. Kendall (1974, J. Atmos. Sci.31, 1698–1706) is inconclusive, mainly because of insufficient statistical resolution. Phase and/or intensity power spectra computed from occultation data may be used to deduce characteristics of the turbulence and to distinguish turbulence from other perturbations in the refractive index. Such determinations are facilitated if observations are made at two or more frequencies (radio occultation) or in two or more colors (stellar occultation).  相似文献

Fluctuations are observed during occultations of both stars and spacecraft by planetary atmospheres. Existing treatments of spacecraft scintillations ignore a major effect unique to occultations: the severe flattening of the Fresnel zone or source image by defocusing. Other large effects, due to “saturation” of the scintillation, have also been ignored. The deeper portions of atmospheric temperature and density profiles inferred from occultation data are seriously in error if other planets' atmospheres are as turbulent as our own. Thus, profiles obtained from entry probes (e.g., the Soviet Venera series) are probably more accurate than those from radio occultation (Mariner 5 and 10) data. Scintillation greatly reduces the information obtainable from occultation observations; much of the detail attributed to layering in published profiles is probably due to aliasing of turbulence. This paper gives an approximately correct theoretical treatment that is a substantial improvement over published theories, and shows how a more accurate theory could be constructed. Some methods for a more accurate determination of atmospheric structure are proposed.  相似文献

Many of the problems of stellar occultation observations stem from the difficulty of determining the effects of realistic atmospheric structure on the lightcurves. General techniques for producing model lightcurves for a variety of realistic atmospheric irregularities, including turbulence and inertia-gravity waves, are presented and applied. Using numerical simulations which model the propagation of a wave through a phase-changing screen, the limit of strong scintillations for one-dimensional, Kolmogorov-like turbulence, both for a point source and for extended sources, is investigated in some detail, and significant departures from the behavior in the weak scintillation regime are found. The results are compared with published analytical results and recent occultation data. The effects of large-scale atmospheric waves with realistic horizontal structure are examined, and the reliability of the numerical inversion method of retrieving the true atmospheric vertical structure under circumstances of strong ray crossing and horizontal inhomogeneities is assessed. The simulations confirm that large-scale layered features of the atmosphere are accurately recovered; horizontally inhomogeneous structures (including turbulence) with coherence scale L ? (2πRH)12 (where R = planetary radius and H = scale height) have little effect on the derived temperature profiles. It is concluded that analysis of occultations may eventually allow us to determine both the quasiglobal atmospheric structure and the statistical characteristics of small-scale refractivity variations.  相似文献

We present an exact calculation for the photon-average bending angle and intensity produced during occultation of a point source by an isothermal atmosphere with an exponential height dependence of turbulent power. The calculation is performed via an expansion in powers of the gradients of average refractivity and turbulent power. Conditions for the validity of the expansion are discussed. We compare results with other expressions, for the same distribution of refractivity, recently presented by V. R. Eshleman and B. S. Haugstad. Discrepancies are noted. Certain properties of photon averages, which may be of importance for the reduction of occultation data, are discussed.  相似文献

In recent years, the technique of Global Positioning System/Low Earth Orbit (GPS/LEO) radio occultation has opened up a new route for exploring the earth atmosphere. With this technique, the vertical profiles of pressure, temperature, water vapor of the earth atmosphere can be retrieved from GPS/LEO occultation data, thus making the latter a potentially valuable data resource for meteorological and atmospheric sciences. The technique may effectively improve the quality of the meteorological profiles, and so improve the current numerical weather forecasting model. In the one-dimensional variational (1DVAR) assimilation retrieval technique in current use, the profiles of atmospheric water vapor and temperature, as well as the sea level pressure are retrieved by assimilating the atmospheric refractivity or bending angle profile from GPS/LEO occultation data. In the system independently developed at Shanghai Observatory, the 1DVAR assimilation of CPS occultation data is accomplished by the Levenberg-Marquardt method with the analytical data from the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) as the background field, the refractivity profile obtained from CHAMP occultation data as the observational quantity. The result was checked with sounding balloon data near the occultation points.  相似文献

The characteristics of spikes observed in the occultation light curves of β Scorpii by Jupiter are reviewed and discussed. Using a model in which the refractivity (density) gradients in the Jovian atmosphere are parallel to the local gravitational field, the spikes are shown to yield information about (i) the [He]/-[H2] ratio in the atmosphere, (ii) the fine scale density structure of the atmosphere and (iii) high-resolution images of the occulted stars. The spikes also serve as indicators for ray crossing. Observational limits are placed on the magnitude of horizontal refractivity gradients; these appear to be absent on scales of a few kilometers at altitudes corresponding to number densities less than 2 × 1014 cm?3. Spikes are produced by atmospheric density variations, perhaps due to atmospheric layers, density waves or turbulence. To discriminate among these possibilities, future occultation observations should be made from a number of observation sites at two or more wavelengths simultaneously with high time resolution techniques. Given a large telescope and suitable observing techniques, useful information about Jupiter's atmosphere can be obtained from future occultations of early-type stars as faint as V ~ + 6–7.  相似文献

Radio occultation studies of the structure of planetary atmospheres have generally involved relatively shallow penetration of the spacecraft behind the limb of the planet in the plane of the sky. Current radio link sensitivities allow detection of the radio signals at all occultation depths, whenever the planet-spacecraft distance is sufficiently large for the refraction to occur at atmospheric heights where microwave absorption is not too large. Voyager 1 at Jupiter and Voyager 2 at Saturn will pass almost directly behind the planets as viewed from the Earth. Thus they will pass through the caustics that corresponds to the focal line of a spherical planet, expanded by oblateness into a surface approximating a four-cusp cylinder. In the plane of the sky, the projection of this surface approximates the evolute of the planet's limb. As the spacecraft passes behind the planet with its antenna tracking the occulting limb, the strength of the radio signals received on Earth will at first decrease due to defocusing in the atmosphere, but then increase as the evolute is approached, because of the focusing caused by limb curvature. Inside the evolute there are four simultaneous signal paths over four limb positions. If we neglect absorption, focused signals for an instant could become orders of magnitude stronger than for the unocculted spacecraft. Measurements of the frequency and intensity of deep occultation signals, and of the timing and character of these “evolute flashes”, could provide information on atmospheric absorption, turbulence, and structure, and on details of the shape of the atmosphere at the focusing limbs as affected, for example, by planetary gravitational moments, rotation, and zonal winds. Such observations will be attempted with Voyager and potentially could be very fruitful in the Pioneer Venus and Galileo (Jupiter) orbiting missions.

Radio occultation studies of planetary atmospheres and ionospheres are based on measurements of the frequency and amplitude of the received radio signal. These measurements have random errors due to noise in the receiving system and linearly mapped into atmospheric profiles to give uncertainties can be estimated from the data and linearly mapped into atmospheric profiles to give uncertainties in temperature, T, pressure, p, and absorption profiles. For Mariner 10 occultation immersion at Venus, the standard deviations of T and p due to receiver noise are less than 2° K and 2 mbar over the range of radii from 6087 to 6140 km, based on our reduction from analog, “ open-loop” data. The temperature has a systematic error due to boundary uncertainty, estimated to be 50°K at 6140 km, that decays rapidly with depth; below 6117 km, it is less than 0.5°K. For the attenuation profile, systematic errors incurred during our calculations are more important than statistical errors. We estimate an upper bound to the uncertainty which is 32% at the peak value of absorption, which is about 0.01 db/km and occurs at a radius of 6096 km. A calculation of the 95% confidence limits for T profiles indicates that the local deviations are statistically significant to about 1°K or less. We have also analyzed “closed-loop” data to give temperature profiles which deviate from the open-loop results by less than 0.2°K below 6110 km but by as much as 2°K in the upper atmosphere. For the same occultation and the same boundary conditions, our closed-loop T-p profile is within 2°K of that of P. D. Nicholson and D. O. Muhleman but differs from those derived by A. J. Kliore by as much as 10°K. We cannot account for deviations as large as the latter by minor differences in trajectory information or computational methods.  相似文献

Possible manifestationsof turbulent scattering in the 1971 Beta Scorpii occultations by Jupiter are critically examined. Lack of detailed correlation between light curves observed at 60-km separations on the Jovian limb argues against a detailed layering hypothesis. An approximate calculation shows that the observed features of the light cuves can be explained in terms of a model for which “spikes” are scintillations caused by Jovian atmospheric turbulence. A significant number of paired spikes are a consequence of the model if the occulted star is binary with an appropriate orientation. The statistical properties of spikes for Beta Scorpii A and C are predicted from Rytov theory for Kolmogorov turbulence and compared with the available observations. Finally, we discuss the effects of turbulent scattering on the temperature profile which is obtained by averaging over the effect of the spikes.  相似文献

Two independent analyses of the dual-frequency radio-occultation experiment performed by Mariner 10 at Venus are presented. Using closed-loop frequency data obtained at NASA's Goldstone facility, we have computed S- and X-band pressure-temperature profiles for Venus' neutral atmosphere, and an S-band profile of the nightside ionosphere. Neutral atmosphere dispersion between the two frequencies is negligible (less than 0.1% in refractivity), as expected for a CO2 atmosphere. The results confirm those obtained by Howard et al. (1974) from the same S-band data with an accuracy of ±5°K at a given pressure level, though there is a discrepancy of 1 km in the radial scale between the two analyses. These two Mariner 10 profiles are compared with the Mariner 5 occultation profile and in situ measurements by Veneras 8, 9, and 10. The occultation was also monitored at the Owens Valley Radio Observatory, though only at X-band. Despite the much lower quality of these data, a reasonable neutral atmosphere refractivity profile above 65 km was obtained from the occultation entry. Uncertainties in the calculated temperatures, however, are too large to permit useful comparison with previous results. The existence of real anomalies in both the amplitude and frequency of the signal during exit from occultation is confirmed.  相似文献

The Mariner 9 S-band radio occultation measurements, which were taken over half a Martian year, were examined for seasonal variations in atmospheric pressures and temperatures. Seasonally related atmospheric pressure oscillations on a global scale were discovered when the pressures were compared on equi-potential levels. There was a global increase in pressure of about 13% between northern winter and spring seasons, and a global decrease in pressure of nearly 14% between northern spring and summer seasons. The maximum global pressure occurred during the northern spring season approximately one Martian month prior to aphelion. These pressure oscillations were correlated with the seasonal growth and decay, and the total area of the polar caps.Temperatures in the mid-latitude regions near the subsolar points were highest during the northern winter season when Mars was closest to the sun. In addition, high latitudinal temperature gradients (up to 2°K per degree latitude) were found. This has important atmospheric dynamical implications, especially for the growth of baroclinic waves.Occultation observations also indicated that the average elevation of the southern hemisphere was nearly 4km higher than the northern hemisphere when referenced to an equipotential level. The occultation measurements showed that the atmospheric pressures near the surface in the southern hemisphere were 33 to 43% lower than the atmospheric pressures near the surface in the northern hemisphere. In addition to other parameters, the asymmetry in the density of the Martian atmosphere and the hemispheric altitude differences are important in understanding the seasonal dynamic processes that exist in the polar cap regions and in the Martian atmosphere generally.  相似文献

In the first two sections of this paper, the two basic methods of reducing occultation light curves—curve fitting and inversion—are reviewed and compared. It is shown that the curve fitting methods have severe problems of nonuniqueness. In addition, in the case of occultation curves dominated by spikes, it is not clear that such solutions are meaningful. The inversion method does not suffer from these drawbacks. Methods of deriving temperature profiles from refractivity profiles are dealt with in the third section. It is shown that, although the temperature profiles are sensitive to small errors in the refractivity profile, accurate temperatures can be obtained, particularly at the deeper levels of the atmosphere. The final section contains a brief discussion of the ambiguities that arise when the occultation curve straddles the turbopause.  相似文献

Laboratory measurements of the microwave opacity of gaseous sulfuric acid under Venus atmospheric conditions indicate that it is an exceptionally strong absorber. They also suggest that its absorptivity has a surprisingly weak dependence on radio frequency, as compared with other common gaseous absorbers. Initial theoretical studies also indicate a large absorptivity and weak frequency dependence, although the measured opacity is several times the computed value, presumably due to deviations from Van Vleck-Weisskopf theory for pressures near and above about 1 atm. The absorbing characteristics of sulfuric acid vapor appear to reconcile what had been thought to be an inconsistency among measurements and deductions concerning the constituents of the atmosphere of Venus, and radio occultation, radar reflection, and radio emission measurements of its opacity. These and previous laboratory measurements of sulfur dioxide, water vapor, and carbon dioxide are used to model relative contributions to opacity as a function of height, in a way that is consistent with observations of the constituents and absorbing properties of the atmosphere. We conclude that sulfuric acid vapor is likely to be the principal microwave absorber in the 30- to 50-km-altitude range of the middle atmosphere of Venus. It would need to have a mixing ratio there of about 35 to 90 ppm if it were the sole absorber. Carbon dioxide, the predominant atmospheric gas, is the main absorber below about 30 km, while sulfur dioxide is an important but secondary absorber in both regions. Water vapor and cloud particulates appear to be only minor contributors to the total opacity. While gaseous sulfuric acid has not been directly measured in any of the in situ probe experiments (due to particular instrumental limitations), its presence at an abundance of the deduced order of magnitude is implied by these and other observations. We suggest that improved radio occultation measurements, in conjuction with high-resolution microwave emission observations and more detailed laboratory studies, could provide important data for investigating the sulfur compound chemistry in the atmosphere of Venus, and that the techniques and results may have application to the study of atmospheric conditions associated with acid rain on Earth.  相似文献

Eighty-seven measurements of the thermal structure in the atmosphere of Venus between the altitudes of about 40 and 85 km were derived from Pioneer Venus Orbiter radio occultation data taken during four occultation seasons from December 1978 to October 1981. These measurements cover latitudes from ?68 to 88° and solar zenith angles of 8 to 166°. The results indicate that the characteristics of the thermal structure in both the troposphere and stratosphere regions are dependent predominantly on the latitude and only weakly on solar illumination conditions. In particular, the circumpolar collar cloud region in the northern hemisphere (latitude 55 to 77°) displays the most dramatic changes in structure, including the appearance of a large inversion, having an average magnitude of about 18°K and a maximum of about 33°K. Also in this region, the tropopause altitude rises by about 4.8 km above its value at low latitudes, the tropopause temperature drops by about 60°K, and the pressure at the tropopause decreases by an average of about 240 mbar. These changes in the collar region are correlated with observations of increased turbulence and greater amplitude of thermal waves in the region, which is located where the persistent circulation pattern in the Venus atmosphere changes from zonally symmetric retrograde rotation to a hemispherical circumpolar vortex. It was shown that the large zonal winds associated with this circulation pattern are not likely to produce distortions in the atmosphere of a magnitude that could lead to temperature errors of the order of the mesosphere inversions observed in the collar region, but under certain circumstances zonal wind distortion could cause errors of 3–4°K.  相似文献
