The data reduction of the metric photography from the Apollo missions is progressing in an orderly fashion within the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA). The data from all three Apollo missions is ultimately to be utilized for development of a lunar control network covering approximately 20% of the lunar surface. In this paper, the status of the data reduction from the Apollo 15 mission is summarized. More specifically, the evaluation of system parameters, proposed control generation plan, and the anticipated characteristics of the network are discussed.Communication presented at the Conference on Lunar Dynamics and Observational Coordinate Systems, held January 15–17, 1973, at the Lunar Science Institute, Houston, Tex., U.S.A.  相似文献

The D-CIXS X-ray spectrometer on ESA's SMART-1 mission will provide the first global coverage of the lunar surface in X-rays, providing absolute measurements of elemental abundances. The instrument will be able to detect elemental Fe, Mg, Al and Si under normal solar conditions and several other elements during solar flare events. These data will allow for advances in several areas of lunar science, including an improved estimate of the bulk composition of the Moon, detailed observations of the lateral and vertical nature of the crust, chemical observations of the maria, investigations into the lunar regolith, and mapping of potential lunar resources. In combination with information to be obtained by the other instruments on SMART-1 and the data already provided by the Clementine and Lunar Prospector missions, this information will allow for a more detailed look at some of the fundamental questions that remain regarding the origin and evolution of the Moon.  相似文献

Age of geological units, surface mineralogical composition, volcanism, tectonics and cratering are major keys for unravelling the geodynamic and geological history of a planet. Thanks to the extensive exploration of the 1960s and 1970s and the compositional mapping of the 1990s missions (Galileo, Clementine and Luna Prospector), the Moon has a unique geological dataset among the extraterrestrial Solar System bodies. The recent and on-going missions, along with the future plans for lunar exploration, will together acquire an extraordinary amount of data. This should provide a solid basis to meet broad objectives like the constraints on the heterogeneity of Lunar composition and the presence of water deposits, the understanding of volcanic and tectonic evolution as well as more specific issues such as the genetic classification of volcanic domes, origin of the dark-halos craters, lava flow emplacement mechanisms, and the kinematics and deformational styles of tectonic structures. The Italian small mission MAGIA (Missione Altimetrica Gravimetrica geochImica lunAre) will be equipped with an integrated context camera and imaging spectrometer, a high resolution camera and a radar altimeter. The spatial and spectral resolution of these instruments will provide data products complementing past and ongoing Lunar mission data, particularly for the polar regions where a full resolution coverage is planned. A general review of some still unanswered questions on lunar surface composition, cold traps, volcanism, tectonics and cratering records is presented here in order to illustrate the potential contribution of MAGIA to these subjects.  相似文献

We develop a method based on the samples from Apollo and Luna landing sites to determine lunar TiO2 content with Chang’E-1 interference imaging spectrometer (IIM) imagery. By analyzing the nonlinear relationship between the optical and compositional parameters of lunar soil samples, the method employs two Support Vector Machines (SVMs) to estimate the titanium abundance of the lunar surface. Developed with the soil compositions of the Apollo and Luna sample-return stations, the RMS (root mean square) error of our method is 0.24 wt% TiO2, and the correlation coefficient of the TiO2 values and our predicted ones is 99.72 %. Compared with the other 3 models, the method proposed in this paper exhibits a good performance for determining the chemical composition of the lunar surface. TiO2 maps of Sinus Iridum, part of the Marius Hills plateau, and part of Mare Smythii are produced using our method, which could be useful for future lunar missions.  相似文献

The titanium contents of lunar mare basalts   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract— Lunar mare basalt sample data suggest that there is a bimodal distribution of TiO2 concentrations. Using a refined technique for remote determination of TiO2, we find that the maria actually vary continuously from low to high values. The reason for the discrepancy is that the nine lunar sample return missions were not situated near intermediate basalt regions. Moreover, maria with 2–4 wt% TiO2 are most abundant, and abundance decreases with increasing TiO2. Maria surfaces with TiO2 >5 wt% constitute only 20% of the maria. Although impact mixing of basalts with differing Ti concentrations may smear out the distribution and decrease the abundance of high‐Ti basalts, the distribution of basalt Ti contents probably reflects both the relative abundances of ilmenite‐free and ilmenite‐bearing mantle sources. This distribution is consistent with models of the formation of mare source regions as cumulates from the lunar magma ocean.  相似文献

Lunar meteorites provide important new samples of the Moon remote from regions visited by the Apollo and Luna sample return missions. Petrologic and geochemical analysis of these meteorites, combined with orbital remote sensing measurements, have enabled additional discoveries about the composition and age of the lunar surface on a global scale. However, the interpretation of these samples is limited by the fact that we do not know the source region of any individual lunar meteorite. Here, we investigate the link between meteorite and source region on the Moon using the Lunar Prospector gamma ray spectrometer remote sensing data set for the elements Fe, Ti, and Th. The approach has been validated using Apollo and Luna bulk regolith samples, and we have applied it to 48 meteorites excluding paired stones. Our approach is able broadly to differentiate the best compositional matches as potential regions of origin for the various classes of lunar meteorites. Basaltic and intermediate Fe regolith breccia meteorites are found to have the best constrained potential launch sites, with some impact breccias and pristine mare basalts also having reasonably well‐defined potential source regions. Launch areas for highland feldspathic meteorites are much less well constrained and the addition of another element, such as Mg, will probably be required to identify potential source regions for these.  相似文献

The most significant findings about the Moon obtained by spacecraft so far, have resulted from measurements of gravity, electromagnetic properties, seismicity, mechanical properties, geologic features, composition, ages, and the lunar environment. A number of major lunar questions remain to be answered. Other properties, measurable with spacecraft, which may provide data critical to answering these questions include geometrical shape, motions, and heat flow. In this paper specific measurements that should provide critical data for each of these questions are identified, with some candidate techniques. Among the suggested techniques that have not yet been used are very long baseline interferometry (Earth-Moon baseline), gravity gradiometry, elemental analysis by neutron interactions, and remotely-controlled on-Moon microscopy.Different kinds of missions are suitable for the different measurements: lunar orbiters, soft-landers, long-range surface traverses, and sample return to Earth are all needed. The choice of manned vs remotely-controlled missions does not depend on scientific requirements but on other considerations. Both manned and remotely-controlled techniques have been used for orbiters, landers, and sample return, neither for a long-range traverse.Paper presented to the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Lunar Studies, Patras, Greece, September 1971.  相似文献

In the context of sample evidence alone, the high-alumina (HA) basalts appear to be an unique, and rare variety of mare basalt. In addition to their distinct chemistry, radiometric dating reveals these basalts to be among the oldest sampled mare basalts. Yet, HA basalts were sampled by four missions spanning a lateral range of ∼2400 km, with ages demonstrating that aluminous volcanism lasted at least 1 billion years. This evidence suggests that HA basalts may be a widespread phenomenon on the Moon. Knowing the distribution of HA mare basalts on the lunar surface has significance for models of the origin and the evolution of the Lunar Magma Ocean. Surface exposures of HA basalts can be detected with compositional remote sensing data from Lunar Prospector Gamma Ray Spectrometer and Clementine. We searched the lunar surface for regions of interest (ROIs) that correspond to the intersection of three compositional constraints taken from values of sampled HA basalts: 12-18 wt% FeO, 1.5-5 wt% TiO2, and 0-4 ppm Th. We then determined the “true” (unobscured by regolith) composition of basalt units by analyzing the rims and proximal ejecta of small impacts (0.4-4 km in diameter) into the mare surface of these ROIs. This paper focuses on two ROIs that are the best candidates for sources of sampled HA basalts: Mare Fecunditatis, the landing site of Luna 16; and northern Mare Imbrium, hypothesized origin of the Apollo 14 HA basalts. We demonstrate our technique's ability for delineating discrete basalt units and determining which is the best compositional match to the HA basalts sampled by each mission. We identified two units in Mare Fecunditatis that spectrally resemble HA basalts, although only one unit (Iltm) is consistent with the compositional and relative age of the Luna 16 HA samples. Northern Mare Imbrium also reveals two units that are within the compositional constraints of HA basalts, with one (Iltm) best matching the composition of the basalts sampled by Apollo 14.  相似文献

We propose a technique that interpolates available lunar prospector gamma-ray spectrometer (GRS) data using Clementine UVVIS spectral reflectance images. The main idea is to use low resolution GRS data as a “ground truth” to establish relationships linking optical data and geochemical information maximizing the respective correlation coefficients. Then the relationships and Clementine UVVIS data are used to derive elemental abundance maps with significantly improved spatial resolution. The main limitation of the technique is its dependence on how well the abundance of the elements correlates with the Clementine UVVIS data. The technique can also be applied to analysis of coming D-CIXS/Smart-1 and AMIE/Smart-1 data to increase resolution of lunar compositional maps. As an illustration of the suggested technique, maps for the elements Fe, Ti, O, Al, Ca, and Mg with pixel size 15 km×15 km are presented. The Fe and Ti distributions resemble qualitatively to the maps obtained with the well-known technique by lucey et al. (2000a. Lunar iron and titanium abundance algorithms based on final processing of Clementine ultraviolet-visible images. J. Geophys. Res. 105, 20,297-20,306), though in our case the ranges of Fe and Ti variations are, respectively, wider and narrower than for lucey's maps. New maps for the elements Fe, Ti, O, Al, Ca, and Mg appear to be informative. For instance, the map of oxygen abundance demonstrates an anomaly in the crater Tycho. The maps of Fe and Al contents show for highland regions slight variations related to maturity degree. Reliability of this relation is confirmed with lunar sample data. The reason of the correlation between chemical composition and exposition age of the lunar surface can be the global transport of the lunar surface material due to meteorite impacts.  相似文献

Lunar images acquired at non-zero phase angles show brightness variations caused by both albedo heterogeneities and local topographic slopes of the surface. To distinguish between these two factors, altimetry measurements or photoclinometry data can be used. The distinction is especially important for imagery of phase-function parameters of the Moon. The imagery is a new tool that can be used to study structural anomalies of the lunar surface. To illustrate the removal of the topographic effects from photometric images, we used Earth-based telescopic observations, altimetry measurements carried out with the Kaguya (JAXA) LALT instrument, and a new photoclinometry technique that includes analysis of several images of the same scenes acquired at different phase angles. Using this technique we have mapped the longitudinal component of lunar topography slopes (the component measured along the lines of constant latitude). We have found good correlations when comparing our map with the corresponding data from Kaguya altimetry. The removal of the topographic surface properties allows for the study of the phase-function parameters of the lunar surface, not only for flat mare regions, but for highlands as well.  相似文献

Lunar olivines typically contain inclusions of Cr-spinel (chromite) that influence their measured optical properties. These altered optical properties complicate modeled predictions of olivine composition from reflectance spectra. Approaches developed for inclusion-free terrestrial olivine spectra must be modified to be applied to chromite-bearing lunar olivine spectra. We present a revised approach for predicting the compositions of chromite-bearing lunar olivines using the Modified Gaussian Model (MGM). The results of this revised approach for chromite-bearing lunar olivines are consistent with previous results for terrestrial olivine reflectance spectra, and successfully predict the olivine’s composition. These results are an important step in compositional assessment of remotely-sensed olivine spectra, and are essential to ongoing investigations of that topic. Our results are based on a limited set of available lunar olivine separates, and would be strengthened by the inclusion of additional compositions.  相似文献

A principal goal of the Lunar Soil Characterization Consortium (LSCC) is to evaluate tools that might be successfully used in remote compositional analysis of the lunar surface. Mathematical methods are extremely valuable to assess whether variations exist in a statistically significant manner, independent of their interpretation. The bounds of widely used correlation of visible to near-infrared spectral parameters with composition are first defined and evaluated. We then evaluate direct (or indirect) links between the combined spectral properties of lunar mare soils and their compositional properties (elemental abundance and mineralogy) through a statistical analysis of the variance across each measurement using principal component analysis (PCA). We first separately analyze LSCC elemental abundance, mineralogy, and spectroscopy data (0.35 to 2.5 μm) using PCA to capture the variance of each system with a relatively small number of independent variables. With this compact set of independent variables for each type of data, we derive functions to link composition and spectroscopy. For these mare soils, one of the best empirical predictive capability is that for FeO. This is not surprising since the effect of ferrous iron on optical properties is well documented. Although Al2O3 has no direct effect on optical properties, its strong anticorrelation with FeO also produces a relatively high predictive capability from spectra. Similarly, a high accuracy in predicting the abundance of pyroxene is observed and should be expected since iron-bearing pyroxene is one of the most optically active components of lunar soil. The accuracy for predicting either TiO2 or ilmenite, on the other hand, is disappointing. High- and low-Ti soils are readily distinguished, but these statistics suggest that making subclass distinctions based on spectral predictions of TiO2 would be risky.  相似文献

The volume FeO and TiO_2 abundances(FTAs) of lunar regolith can be more important for understanding the geological evolution of the Moon compared to the optical and gamma-ray results. In this paper, the volume FTAs are retrieved with microwave sounder(CELMS) data from the Chang'E-2 satellite using the back propagation neural network(BPNN) method. Firstly, a three-layered BPNN network with five-dimensional input is constructed by taking nonlinearity into account. Then, the brightness temperature(TB) and surface slope are set as the inputs and the volume FTAs are set as the outputs of the BPNN network.Thereafter, the BPNN network is trained with the corresponding parameters collected from Apollo, Luna, and Surveyor missions. Finally, the volume FTAs are retrieved with the trained BPNN network using the four-channel TBderived from the CELMS data and the surface slope estimated from Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter(LOLA) data. The rationality of the retrieved FTAs is verified by comparing with the Clementine UV-VIS results and Lunar Prospector(LP) GRS results. The retrieved volume FTAs enable us to re-evaluate the geological features of the lunar surface. Several important results are as follows. Firstly, very-low-Ti(1.5 wt.%) basalts are the most spatially abundant, and the surfaces with TiO_2 5 wt.% constitute less than 10% of the maria. Also, two linear relationships occur between the FeO abundance(FA) and the TiO_2 abundance before and after the threshold, 16 wt.% for FA. Secondly, a new perspective on mare volcanism is derived with the volume FTAs in several important mare basins, although this conclusion should be verified with more sources of data. Thirdly, FTAs in the lunar regolith change with depth to the uppermost surface, and the change is complex over the lunar surface. Finally, the distribution of volume FTAs hints that the highlands crust is probably homogeneous, at least in terms of the microwave thermophysical parameters.  相似文献

We performed the first global survey of lunar regolith depths using Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) data and the crater morphology method for determining regolith depth. We find that on both the lunar farside and in the nearside, non-mare regions, the regolith depth is twice as deep as it is within the lunar maria. Our data compare favorably with previous studies where such data exist. We also find that regolith depth correlates well with density of large craters (>20 km diameter). This result is consistent with the gradual formation of regolith by rock fracture during impact events.  相似文献

Lunar Orbital Station (LOS) is proposed as support of manned lunar exploration missions. A fast-converging iteration method for determining the initial conditions of two-impulse transfer trajectories between the Earth and the LOS is proposed based on the patched conic approach. In the Earth phase, near Earth state is connected with the state at the lunar sphere of influence (LSOI) based on the relationship between the initial and terminal orbital state. Then, an analytical algorithm is proposed to find the state vector at LSOI, such to satisfy the LOS orbital constraint. An iterative process is finally adopted to generate favorable initial solutions that satisfy the constraint near the Earth and at the perilune. The algorithm convergence is investigated, and two types of transfer trajectories are found for both Earth-LOS and LOS-Earth transfer. Based on the algorithm, orbital transfer windows, velocity impulse and time of flight are analyzed in the typical years 2025 and 2034. At last, the initial solution is corrected with a high fidelity model based on the active-set method, which shows the precision of this algorithm. The novel procedure for the transfer trajectories design and the analytic result can be used as a basis for rapid mission evaluation and design for future manned lunar missions based on the LOS.  相似文献

Lunar samples provide ground-truth for all planetary exploration. Lunar soils, especially their <1 mm fraction, constitute the only primary standards for remotely sensing the composition of small airless planetary bodies. Therefore, maintaining the integrity, especially of the <1 mm fraction, takes on a much larger, big picture responsibility. A possibility has been suggested that lunar soils may disintegrate (to smaller grain sizes) if exposed to the Earth's moist atmosphere, thus losing some of their intrinsic value to science. We have tested that possibility by multiple, independent reanalyses with three techniques (wet-sieving in water and in alcohol, and laser diffractometry) using a fresh allocation of Apollo 17 “orange soil,” 74220. Our results are very similar to each other despite repeated soaking–drying in water, and also to those originally determined in the 1970s. We have also used a laser diffractometry technique to reanalyze the grain sizes of ~50 mg splits of eight soils that were initially analyzed three to four decades ago. The results are randomly different from previous measurements, which we attribute to nonrepresentative subsampling of very small amounts from previous allocations; ~50 mg is too small for obtaining representative aliquots. The results of grain-size analyses presented and discussed in this study indicate that the integrity of the lunar soil 74220, and indeed, all lunar soils, has not been physically compromised in the last four decades.  相似文献

From the Clementine UVVIS imagery of the lunar surface, the abundance of agglutinates in the lunar regolith and their composition in terms of FeO and Al2O3 oxides have been predicted. Data on the spectral, chemical, and mineralogic measurements of about 30 lunar soil samples from the Lunar Samples Characterization Consortium (LSCC) collection were used. The fulfilled prognosis confirms that the mare agglutinates are enriched in Al2O3 and depleted of FeO, while the highland agglutinates are depleted of Al2O3 and enriched in FeO. This behavior can be caused by the global transport of the lunar surface material induced by cosmogenic factors.  相似文献

A new multivariate statistical technique have been developed for detection of populations groupings in data arrays. General characteristics of the method are described. Results obtained analyzing lunar rocks and glasses are discussed. Lunar rocks lie in a genetically related sequence: pyroxenitic mantle materials produce mare type basalts; anorthositic rocks are the most distant members of the differentiation; noritic, hi-Ti and high KREEP basalts materials appear to be intermediate products. Lunar glasses parallel the overall behaviour of rocks, with some peculiar local characteristics. Granitic materials are present only as glasses, suggesting an origin as residuals. Links between several identified classes are discussed in terms of the evolution of the lunar crust.  相似文献

This survey is a general overview of modern optical studies of the Moon and their diagnostic meaning. It includes three united parts: phase photometry, spectrophotometry, and polarimetry. The first one is devoted to the progress in the photometry of the Moon, which includes absolute albedo determination to refine the albedo scale (e.g., to connect lunar observations and the data of lunar sample measurements) and mapping the parameters of a lunar photometric function (e.g., the phase-angle ratios method) with the aim of making qualitative estimates of regolith structure variations. This part also includes observations of the lunar opposition effect as well as photogrammetry and photoclinometry techniques. In particular, available data show that because of the low albedo of the lunar surface, the coherent backscattering enhancement hardly influences the lunar opposition spike, with the exception of the brightest lunar areas measured in the NIR. The second part is devoted to chemical/mineral mapping of the Moon's surface using spectrophotometric measurements. This section also includes analyses related to the detection of water ice or hydroxyl, prognoses of maturity, and helium-3 abundance mapping. In particular, we examine the relationship between superficial OH/H2O compounds spectrally detected recently and bulk “water ice” found earlier by the Lunar Prospector GRS and LRO LEND, assuming that the compounds are delivered to cold traps (permanently shadowed regions) with electrostatically levitated dust saturated by solar wind hydrogen. Significant problems arise with the determination of TiO2 content, as the correlation between this parameter and the color ratio C(750/415 nm) is very non-linear and not universal for different composition types of the lunar surface; a promising way to resolve this problem is to use color ratios in the UV spectral range. The third part is devoted to mapping of polarization parameters of the lunar surface, which enable estimates of the average size of regolith particles and their optical inhomogeneity. This includes considerations of the Umov effect and results of spectropolarimetry, negative polarization imagery, and measurements of other polarimetric parameters, including the third Stokes parameter. Although these three research divisions have not been developed equally and the numbers of proper references are very different, we try to keep a balance between them, depicting a uniform picture. It should be emphasized that many results presented in this review can be applied to other atmosphereless celestial bodies as well.  相似文献
