One of the principal reasons why speleothems are recognised as important palaeoclimate archives is their suitability for accurate and precise uranium-series (U-series) age determination. Sampling speleothem sections for U-series dating is straightforward in most cases because visible growth layers are preserved. However, this is not always the case, and here we describe a sampling strategy whereby growth layers are resolved from trace-element images produced by laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). We apply this method to a section of an Italian subaqueous speleothem (CD3) that lacks persistent visible growth layering.Trace-element imaging revealed growth layers that are strongly non-planar in their geometry owing to the speleothem's pronounced euhedral crystal terminations. The most prominent trace-element layers were first digitized as x, y vector contours. We then interpolated these in the growth-axis direction to generate a series of contour lines at ∼250-μm increments. The coordinates of these contours were used to guide the sampling via a computerised micromilling lathe. This produced a total of 22 samples for U-series dating by multi-collector ICP-MS. The dating results returned ages in correct stratigraphic order within error. Close inspection of the U-series data and the derived depth–age model suggests that the main source of model-age uncertainty is unrelated to the contour sampling but instead more associated with how closely spaced the model ages are in time, i.e. the model age density. Comparisons between stable oxygen and carbon isotope profiles derived from aliquots of the dating samples and two other stable isotope profiles from CD3 spanning the same time period compare very favourably. Taken together, this suggests that our trace-element contouring method provides a reliable means for extracting samples for dating (and other geochemical analyses), and can be applied to similar speleothems lacking visible growth layering.  相似文献

We have studied two young speleothems, SC4 from Smiths Cave (Christmas Island, eastern Indian Ocean) and WM7 from Wollondilly Cave (Wombeyan caves, SE Australia). Attempts to date these speleothems by the Th/U method have proved unsuccessful with some age reversals for SC4 due to multiple sources of non-authigenic Th. This method has also resulted in imprecise ages for WM7 because of low U concentrations (<10 ppb) and consequently very low levels of authigenic 230Th relative even to the very low levels of detrital 230Th present. Here, we present an alternative method for reliable dating of these young speleothems using radiocarbon. Approximately 100 carbonate samples from SC4 and WM7 were analysed for 14C by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The AMS results indicate that bomb 14C was evident in the youngest parts of both stalagmites. Two different approaches were used to estimate dead carbon fraction (DCF) values for these stalagmites for the pre-bomb period. For SC4, the DCF values were estimated based on the timing of 14C dates for that period determined by high-resolution δ18O recorded in the speleothem, and the timing of the onset of bomb 14C. For WM7, a “maximum” range of pre-bomb DCF was determined. Chronologies of these speleothems were built based on a dense sequence of DCF-corrected ages using three different age-depth models: Clam (Classical method), and Bacon and OxCal (Bayesian statistical approach). Good agreement between these age-depth models were observed indicating that the top 170 mm of SC4 and the top 50 mm of WM7 grew during the past 550–750 years and 1360–1740 years, respectively.  相似文献

Although it was demonstrated 20 years ago that mass spectrometric U–Th methods are capable of high-precision dating of young corals, the use of this approach to decipher recent environmental, climatic and archaeological records is still restricted and its potential has not yet been widely recognised. U–Th methods are typically used to determine the ages of carbonate materials such as speleothem and coral. Dating young carbonates of this sort is challenging. Their extremely low 230Th content necessitates stricter instrumental and laboratory conditions than those required for dating older samples. Moreover, analyses must be corrected for the presence of non-radiogenic 230Th, which is proportionally far more significant than in older samples. Nevertheless, 2σ precisions of around ±1–10 years are readily achievable for pristine coral samples dating from the last 500 years. Although the range of analytical precisions for speleothems may vary more widely depending on U concentrations and levels of non-radiogenic 230Th correction, published studies reveal 2σ precisions of around ±10–80 years for typical speleothems. This paper demonstrates how the U–Th method may be applied to establish the causes of recent coral mortality, to determine the recurrence interval of extreme wave events, to investigate earthquake frequency and neotectonic uplift, to reconstruct recent climatic history, and to understand settlement patterns and sociopolitical changes in Polynesia prior to European contact.  相似文献

We have established a plausible rate of uplift near Siracusa in southeastern Sicily (Italy) over the last glacial–interglacial cycle using U-series ages of submerged speleothem calcite and 14C ages of calcite serpulid layers that encrust the speleothems during cave submergence. The precisely determined ages of these sea level benchmarks were compared with expected relative sea level position based on glacio-hydro-isostatic modeling to assess the rate of uplift in this region. When combined with the age of various late Holocene archaeological sites that have been recently described and characterized in terms of their functional position relative to sea level these data collectively define a rate of uplift ≤0.4 mm a?1 along this portion of the Sicilian coastline. These results are consistent with an age assignment of marine isotope stage (MIS) 5.3 or 5.5 for the Akradina terrace, which in turn places temporal constraints on paleoshorelines above and below this level.  相似文献

Over two decades of technical and application-based advances to the speleothem U-Pb chronometer have cemented this terrestrial archive at the forefront of landscape reconstruction, palaeoclimatology, and palaeoanthropology. The ability to access speleothem palaeoclimate records beyond the 650 ka limit of the U-Th system has opened many avenues to such ‘deep-time’ considerations. Yet still this chronometer remains a challenging analytical exercise, more-so as the technique becomes routinely applied to carbonates with less-than-ideal U/Pb ratios. In this contribution, we review the vadose speleothem U-Pb system, as revealed by 68 previously published isochrons produced from 474 solution-mode analyses across three separate geographical regions. We develop a new statistical parameter of ‘average distance’ to quantify the dispersion or ‘spread’ along the previously published isochrons and compare this with available U and Pb elemental concentrations. Our findings highlight the importance of regional geology and karst morphology in controlling the speleothem's overall U/Pb ratio. Furthermore, we show that variability in the amount of inherited Pb across the sampling layer (average variability of 63% relative to sample average) – not uranium (23% variability) or by extension radiogenic Pb – is a main factor controlling the resulting isochron's quality. This is demonstrated using Z-score distributions of the U and Pb concentrations and isochron average distance values. By making this distinction we hope to initiate further research into Pb-specific transportation vectors through the karst, in addition to physical/chemical processes that fractionate inherited Pb at the speleothem precipitation site. We go on to extend the use of Tera-Wasserburg common Pb anchors to the ‘classical’ U-Pb isochrons as an example of the utility gained by considering the role of inherited Pb within speleothems. Finally we argue that an improved theoretical understanding of inherited Pb distributions within speleothems would greatly benefit solution mode sampling strategies, especially for poor-to-moderate U/Pb speleothems.  相似文献

A flight of marine terraces along the Cuban coast records Quaternary sea‐level highstands and a general slowly uplifting trend during the Pleistocene. U/Th dating of these limestone terraces is difficult because fossil reef corals have been affected by open system conditions. Terrace ages are thus often based on geological and geomorphological observations. In contrast, the minimum age of the terraces can be constrained by dating speleothems from coastal mixing (flank margin) caves formed during past sea‐level highstands and carving the marine limestones. Speleothems in Santa Catalina Cave have ages >360 ka and show various cycles of subaerial–subaqueous corrosion and speleothem growth. This suggests that the cave was carved during the MIS 11 sea‐level highstand or earlier. Some stalagmites grew during MIS 11 through MIS 8 and were submerged twice, once at the end of MIS 11 and then during MIS 9. Phreatic overgrowths (POS) covering the speleothems suggest anchialine conditions in the cave during MIS 5e. Their altitude at 16 m above present sea level indicates a late Pleistocene uplift rate of <0.1 mm/ka, but modelling also shows uplift to have been insignificant over a long timespan during the middle Pleistocene since the cave was carved. Our study shows that some flank margin caves in the region of Matanzas are older than commonly believed (i.e. MIS 11 rather than MIS 5). These caves not only can be preserved but are good markers of interglacial sea‐level highstands, more reliable than marine abrasion surfaces. Copyright © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

地震作用下黄土边坡的动力响应特征与变形失稳机制是具有重要理论与实践意义的课题,但从动力响应频谱特性方面开展的研究还相对较少。以大型振动台模型试验获得的黄土边坡地震动峰值加速度数据为基础,通过分析其变化规律,着重从频谱特性的角度分析,讨论黄土边坡的动力失稳机制。进一步通过对坡面不同高程测点、边坡内部垂直方向以及水平方向上测点的加速度时程进行绝对加速度反应谱分析,从频谱变化角度提出黄土边坡的动力失稳机制。研究表明,黄土边坡在地震动作用下的响应过程可以分为三个阶段:弹性阶段、塑性阶段与破坏阶段;黄土边坡进入破坏阶段时均会伴随反应谱峰值的增幅或者主周期的变化,在弹性阶段反应谱加速度峰值增幅与输入地震动幅值增幅一致,进入塑性阶段后反应谱峰值增幅比输入地震动幅值增幅小;研究提出将反应谱首峰的凸显情况作为坡体破坏程度的判断依据之一。  相似文献

Here we present a new algorithm (StalAge), which is designed to construct speleothem age models. The algorithm uses U-series ages and their corresponding age uncertainty for modelling and also includes stratigraphic information in order to further constrain and improve the age model. StalAge is applicable to problematic datasets that include outliers, age inversions, hiatuses and large changes in growth rate. Manual selection of potentially inaccurate ages prior to application is not required. StalAge can be applied by the general, non-expert user and has no adjustable free parameters. This offers the highest degree of reproducibility and comparability of speleothem records from different studies. StalAge consists of three major steps. Firstly, major outliers are identified. Secondly, age data are screened for minor outliers and age inversions, and the uncertainty of potential outliers is increased using an iterative procedure. Finally, the age model and corresponding 95%-confidence limits are calculated by a Monte-Carlo simulation fitting ensembles of straight lines to sub-sets of the age data.We apply StalAge to a synthetic stalagmite ’sample’ including several problematic features in order to test its performance and robustness. The true age is mostly within the 95%-confidence age limits of StalAge showing that the calculated age models are accurate even for very difficult samples. We also apply StalAge to three published speleothem datasets. One of those is annually laminated, and the lamina counting chronology agrees with the age model calculated by StalAge. For the other two speleothems the resulting age models are similar to the published age models, which are both based on smoothing splines. Calculated uncertainties are in the range of those calculated by combined application of Bayesian chronological ordering and a spline, showing that StalAge is efficient in using stratigraphic information in order to reduce age model uncertainty.The algorithm is written in the open source statistical software R and available from the authors or as an electronic supplement of this paper.  相似文献

软土具有高灵敏度、低强度等特性,在地震过程中极易产生震陷。基于OpenSees数值模拟方法对软土场地的震陷反应进行非线性动力有限元分析,通过改变地震动峰值加速度、频谱特性、输入方式来研究其对软土震陷的影响。结果表明,地震动峰值加速度对地基土的不均匀震陷有显著影响,地震动峰值加速度越大,震陷量显著增大,震陷影响深度更大,对水平地表造成的破坏范围也更大;地震动频谱特性对软土震陷有重要影响,当地震动卓越频率与场地自振频率相近时,其幅值越大,产生的震陷越严重;水平、竖向同时输入地震动的方式能更好地反映土体的振动及震陷响应。该研究成果对探索软土震陷的机理有一定的指导意义。  相似文献

Determination of annual lamination provides important additional constraints to radiometric dates on speleothems, both for dating the duration of specific growth intervals and optimizing growth models. In the absence of visible laminae, however, speleothem age models are reliant upon curve fitting through discretely dated points and are therefore inherently more uncertain than annual chronologies from laminae. Given that the impact of seasonality on speleothems is expected to be strong enough to generate an annual pulse in trace element chemistry regardless of whether or not visible or fluorescent growth laminae are visible, we demonstrate the potential for deriving high-resolution stalagmite chronologies from non-laminated samples using annual chemical variations in stalagmites from two Alpine caves (Obir, Austria and Ernesto, NE Italy). Trace element data were obtained by ion microprobe analyses for H, P, Mg, Na, Sr and Ba and the annual signal was sought using spectral and wavelet analysis. An automated chemical peak-counting software tool was developed in MATLAB©. It counts significant annual peaks using criteria of minimum amplitude in relation to the local standard deviation of signal variation and minimum separation between peaks determined by the thickness of the preceding layers. Verification of the tool using visibly laminated samples suggests the software is a reliable and accurate method of chronology building, with hit ratios greater than 0.93 and less than 0.75% false alarm occurrences. Used in conjunction with other dating methods such as radiocarbon, U–Th and sulphur peak dating, the automated chemical laminae chronology-building approach provides a more meaningful alternative to simple age-depth curve fitting for non-laminated samples.  相似文献

基于线弹性断裂力学理论分析了垂直向地震作用对节理岩体地震动力破坏的影响。在仅考虑峰值时,最不利的单向地震动加速度方向是水平倾向坡外,双向则依据破裂机制是拉剪或压剪,加速度分别是水平倾向坡外与向下或向上的组合。地震动的幅值、作用方向及双向地震动的组合都可使岩体的破坏机制发生转化,并且是突变的、不可逆的。较低峰值的双向地震动产生的应力强度因子可能大于较高峰值的单向地震动所产生的应力强度应子。在岩体节理分布特征和静态应力场一定的初始条件下,第一个导致岩体中产生破裂的地震动加速度幅值及其方向的组合唯一地决定了岩体不可逆破坏发展的方向、机制及最终的破坏特征,其复杂性远大于静力作用时的情况。对岩体地震动力破坏问题的认识应充分考虑垂直向地震动的重要影响。  相似文献

为了研究近断层地震动速度脉冲及强竖向地震动对风机塔地震响应的影响,以某陆上风电场1.5 MW风机塔为研究对象开展了结构在水平向脉冲型地震动、水平向非脉冲型地震动、水平与竖向地震动组合3种地震输入工况的时程分析。通过3种工况下塔顶位移时程、加速度时程、塔底剪力、弯矩及轴力的对比分析发现:近断层速度脉冲对结构塔顶水平位移、塔顶水平加速度、塔底剪力与弯矩均影响显著;竖向地震动会加大结构的塔顶竖向加速度响应及塔底轴力响应;随着竖向与水平加速度峰值比增大,塔顶竖向加速度响应增大,最大轴力随着峰值比增大而增大,最小轴力随着峰值比增大而减小。此外,增量动力分析表明,采用自接触的有限元模型可以更真实地预测风机塔的失稳破坏机制。  相似文献

The kinematic soil–foundation interaction changes the free field ground motion to a different motion at the foundation of a structure. This interaction effect may be expressed by the ratio of the peak horizontal acceleration of a rigid and relatively lightweight foundation to the peak horizontal acceleration at the ground surface in the free field. It is found that the interaction effect can be defined by a simple function of the ratio of the peak horizontal ground velocity and ground acceleration in the free field, the length of the foundation and the shear wave velocity in the soil. Predictive equations for the kinematic soil foundation effect are derived using 350 strong motion records generated by 114 earthquakes world-wide. At the same time, an attenuation relationship is derived for the ratio of the peak horizontal ground velocity and acceleration from the same set of data. Ten case histories are studied; the interaction effects are calculated by using the predictive equations and then compared with measured field values. The results of the comparison illustrate the degree of predictive capability of the method when the foundation mass and the inertial soil–foundation interaction are not considered.  相似文献

基于欧美规范确定了坐落在深厚覆盖层上KH抽水蓄能电站上、下库场地基本运行和最大设计地震动峰值加速度、反应谱和时程等动参数。首先依据场地区域地震烈度区划图、特征周期区划图和依据场地地质地震条件选取的5条种子实测地震动确定场地基岩输入加速度时程、峰值加速度和设计反应谱,进而基于各土层地质参数和一维弹性波传播模拟程序确定覆盖层表面的平均峰值加速度、平均反应谱和5条地震动时程,对所得到的平均反应谱和峰值加速度进行光滑处理后确定可用于各建筑物结构抗震设计的地震动参数,包括覆盖层表面水平向动力响应加速度时程、峰值加速度和设计反应谱。该方法可较好地保留输入地震动的真实动力特性,如持时、相位和频率等,为我国规范中建议的确定场地地震动参数的方法提供有益的补充。  相似文献

Yumidong (Corn Cave) is a newly discovered Paleolithic site in the Three Gorges region of central China. Numerous Paleolithic artifacts have been excavated from the sedimentary deposits of the cave in association with faunal remains attributed to the Middle-Late Pleistocene Ailuropoda-Stegodon fauna of southern China. To establish the chronology of the sedimentary sequence (>5 m thick), 14C dating was applied to bone and charcoal samples (n = 6); the U-series method was used to date in situ precipitated speleothems (n = 12), transported speleothem samples (n = 6) and 18 subsamples of a fossil tooth; and the coupled ESR/U-series method was used to date fossil teeth (n = 6). The derived dates were combined using a hierarchical Bayesian approach to generate a unified chronostratigraphy for the Yumidong sequence. In our Bayesian analyses, the 14C and coupled ESR/U-series dates were considered to provide direct age estimates for the target layers, while the U-series dates of the in situ precipitated speleothems and fossil tooth were used as minimum age constraints and those of the transported speleothem fragments as maximum age constraints. The Bayesian analyses provided robust time intervals for the archeological layers: L2-Upper (14–23 ka), L2-Lower (27–63 ka), L3 (106–171 ka), L4 (140–192 ka), L10 (157–229 ka), L11 (181–256 ka), and L12 (214–274 ka) with a probability of 95%, allowing the establishment of a ∼300 ka long geological and archeological history for the Yumidong site and placing it as a reference site for Paleolithic cultural evolution in the Three Gorges region from the late Middle Pleistocene to Late Pleistocene.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of ground geology on the acceleration response spectra is studied at 32 sites in Gujarat, India. The sites are grouped into Proterozoic, Mesozoic, Tertiary and Quaternary. The normalized acceleration response spectra at 5% damping of 407 strong ground motions (horizontal and vertical components) recorded at these sites varying in magnitude from 3.0 to 5.7 are determined. The study shows that the shape of the acceleration response spectra is influenced by the regional geology and local site conditions. The peak of maximum horizontal spectral amplification is between 0.03 and 0.05 s in Proterozoic formations, 0.06 and 0.10 s in Mesozoic formations, 0.06 and 0.08 s in Tertiary and 0.12 s in Quaternary formations. The maximum vertical spectral acceleration is at 0.025 s in Proterozoic, 0.07 s in Mesozoic, 0.05 s in Tertiary and 0.10 s in Quaternary formations. The average acceleration amplification factor in all the geological formations is between 2.5 and 3.0 both in horizontal and vertical components. It has been observed that acceleration response spectra at sites having same geological formations are also influenced by local site conditions. The study shows that the acceleration response spectrum in the current Indian code applicable for the entire country underestimates the seismic forces at hard-rock sites and overestimates at soft-soil sites. Using recorded strong motion data with Mw ranging from 3.5 to 5.7, an attenuation relationship is developed at six periods to predict geometric mean of horizontal spectral amplitudes for rock and soil sites. The spectral amplitudes predicted with the attenuation relationship match well with the observed one within statistical limits for hypocentral distances less than 200 km.  相似文献

地震作用下黄土场地对地震波不同分量的放大效应影响显著。针对黄土高原典型黄土场地在地震作用下的放大效应,设计并完成大型地震模拟振动台试验,通过输入不同强度的地震动荷载,研究黄土场地加速度(PGA)放大系数、傅里叶谱、加速度反应谱、H/V谱比与地震动强度和场地高度的变化规律,揭示地震波不同分量对黄土场地效应的影响。结果显示:黄土场地对地震波的水平分量具有明显的放大效应,对地震波垂直分量的放大效应影响较小;随着高程的增加,地震波水平分量PGA放大系数呈现非线性变化;随着地震动强度和高程的增加水平分量卓越频率的频段和幅值逐渐增加,卓越频率向低频偏移,放大倍数呈现出非线性特性。  相似文献

The dynamic response of an unreinforced masonry arch is examined, modelling the rigid body motions of arch segments under the influence of gravitational and inertial forces. This extends earlier studies of single rocking blocks, stacked blocks, and portal mechanisms of blocks; the masonry arch is analysed as another kinematic form of such a system. In this first effort a part-circular planar arch ring is studied and excitation is restricted to horizontal ground acceleration of the base. The mechanism kinematics are presented and the governing equation of motion is derived in non-linear form. The instantaneous form is determined for small rotations about the initial geometry and is used to study the conditions for the onset of mechanism motion. Possible failure conditions are posed and bounding principles are stated. One possible failure condition, direct overturning as a four-link mechanism, is studied for one simplified base motion. The results show that an arch geometry establishes good resistance to earthquake excitation in that ground acceleration must exceed a rather high threshold before any mechanism motion would develop; however, once that threshold has been passed the arch has relatively modest resistance before failure. Other possible failure conditions are discussed; one emerges from pounding effects between segments at impact, and another develops from sliding of blocks over one another as the internal forces (normal and tangential to the masonry joint) vary with the inertial forces.  相似文献

This study attempts to propose dynamic centrifuge model tests as a method of seismic risk assessment in order to discover how stone architectural heritages with masonry structures have endured seismic load, and whether there is any possibility of future earthquake damage. Dynamic centrifuge tests have been conducted for one fifteenth scale models of Seok-ga-tap and the five-storey stone pagoda of Jeongnimsa temple site, which are Korean representative stone pagodas. In order to make input motions of the earthquake simulator, site investigation and site-specific response analysis have been performed. The models of two stone pagodas, which have the same number of pieces with the real structures, have been produced and the dynamic centrifuge tests have been conducted for the model pagodas. Accelerometers were attached at different heights of the pagoda. The measured acceleration records and frequency responses were analysed during dynamic centrifuge test. Two real earthquake records, Hachinohe and Ofunato earthquakes and a sweeping signal with ranged frequency were utilised for input motions of dynamic centrifuge tests to evaluate the behaviour of the stone pagodas. For Seok-ga-tap models, it was observed that acceleration tends to be amplified with height. The third floor body shows at most 2.5 amplification of acceleration in comparison to the surface ground. The amplification was at a frequency of 3.83 Hz and it was considered as the natural frequency of the pagoda. For the five-storey stone pagoda, the seismic wave energy significantly reduced while it passed the first body floor, and then the peak acceleration was gradually amplified upwards. It was found that the pagodas did not collapse when the peak acceleration of ground surface was raised to 0.4 g. Given that the maximum design seismic acceleration specified in Korean seismic design guide is 0.22 g and the amplification ratio of peak acceleration in the supporting ground of the pagodas ranges from 1.45 to 1.74, it can be shown that the two pagodas are stable against 2400-year return period earthquake level, and have excellent seismic performance.  相似文献
