The expression for the zodiacal brightness integral is especially simple if the integrand contains the ‘directional scattering coefficient’, D, (a.u.?1), or equivalently the scattering cross-section per unit-volume. The two intersections of the terrestrial orbit with a line of sight lying in the ecliptic offer the possibility of isolating the contribution of the chord, with a conservative assumption of steadiness, but without the controversial assumption of a homogeneous zodiacal cloud. The zodiacal brightnesses between 60 and 120° elongation can be used to derive D0 and D, the value of D and its heliocentric radial derivative, both at 1 a.u. and at a scattering angle of 90°. A polarimetric treatment leads to the local polarization degree, P0, and to its heliocentric derivative, P. Applied to all three available observational sources, this method invalidates the assumption of homogeneity, leading to a rather high relative gradient PP0 near 1 a.u. (? 12, ? 16 or ? 24%, according to the source, as the Sun's distance decreases from 1.0 to 0.9 a.u.).The method is extended to Doppler spectrometry, taking advantage of the two equal projections on the line of sight of the Earth's velocity vector. The brightness Z0 and the Dopplershift Δλ0 observed at 90° elongation, together with the derivatives w.r.t. elongation ε, of the brightness, Z? and of the Dopplershift, Δλ, can be used to retrieve the mean orbital velocity, v, of the interplanetary scatterers in the region of the terrestrial orbit. The two most reliable observational sources lead, with fair agreement, to a relative excess (v ? V)V, over the terrestrial velocity, of the order of + 25%.  相似文献

In March 1979, the spectrum of Venus was recorded in the far infrared from the G.P. Kuiper Airborne Observatory when the planet subtended a phase angle of 62°. The brightness temperature was observed to be 275°K near 110 cm?1, dropping to 230°K near 270 cm?1. Radiance calculations, using temperature and cloud structure formation from the Pioneer Venus mission and including gaseous absorption by the collision-induced dipole of CO2, yield results consistently brighter than the observations. Supplementing the spectral data, Pioneer Venus OIR data at similar phase angles provide the constraint that any additional infrared opacity must be contained in the upper cloud, H2SO4 to the Pioneer-measured upper cloud structure serves to reconcile the model spectrum and the observations, but cloud microphysics strongly indicates that such a high particle density haze (N ? 1.6 × 107cm?3) is implausible. The atmospheric environment is reviewed with regard to the far infrared opacity and possible particle distribution modifications are discussed. We conclude that the most likely possibility for supplementing the far-infrared opacity is a population of large particles (r ? 1 μm) in the upper cloud with number densities less than 1 particle cm?3 which has remained undetected by in situ measurements.  相似文献

Numerical solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation governing the transport of solar protons are obtained using the Crank-Nicholson technique with the diffusion coefficient represented by Kr=K0rb where r is radial distance from the Sun and b can take on positive or negative values. As b ranges from +1 to ?3, the time to the observation of peak flux decreases by a factor of 5 for 1 MeV protons when VK0 = 3 AUb?1 where V is the solar wind speed. The time to peak flux is found to be very insensitive to assumptions concerning the solar and outer scattering boundary conditions and the presence of exponential time decay in the flux does not depend on the existence of an outer boundary. At VK0? 15 AUb?1, 1 MeV particles come from the Sun by an almost entirely convective process and suffer large adiabatic deceleration at b?0 but for b=+1, large Fermi acceleration is possible at all reasonable VK0 values. Implications of this result for the calculation and measurement of particle diffusion coefficients is discussed. At b?0, the pure diffusion approximation to transport overestimates by a factor 2 or more the time to peak flux but as b becomes more negative, the additional effects of convection and energy loss become less important.  相似文献

The paper gives the results of detailed studies of the frequency spectra Ss(?) of the chain of the wave packets Fs(t) of geomagnetic pulsations PC-1 recorded at the Novolazarevskaya station. The bulk of the energy of Fs(t) is concentrated in the vicinity of the central frequencies ?s0 of spectra—the carrier frequencies of the signals. The velocity V0 ≌ 6.103km s?1 of the flux of protons generating these signals correspond to them. The spectra of the signals have oscillations—“satellites” irregularly distributed in frequency. These satellites, as the authors believe, testify to the presence of the individual groups of protons of low concentration whose velocities vary within 103–104 km s?1.Their energy is only of the order of 10?2–10?3 of the energy of the main proton flux. Clearly pronounced maxima on double and triple frequencies ? = 2?s0and 3?s0 are detected. They show that the generation of pulsations PC-1 is accompanied by the generation on the overtones of wave packets called in this paper “two-fold” and “three-fold” pulsations PC-1. Intensive symmetrical satellites of a modulation character have been discovered on frequencies ?±sK. Frequency differences Δ?sK± = ¦?s0 ? ?sK±¦ = (0.011,0.022 and 0.035) Hz correspond to them. The authors believe that the values of Δ?±sK are resonance frequencies of the magnetospheric cavity in which geomagnetic pulsations PC-1 are generated. It is established that the values of Δ?±sK coincide closely with the carrier frequencies of geomagnetic pulsations PC-3 and PC-4 generated in the magnetosphere. This leads to the conclusion that the resonance oscillations of the magnetospheric cavity are their source. Thus, the generation of geomagnetic pulsations of different types and resonance oscillations in the magnetosphere are integrated into a unified process. The importance of the results obtained and the necessity to check further their trustworthiness and universality, using experimental data gathered in different conditions, is stressed.  相似文献

Previous studies based on radio scintillation measurements of the atmosphere of Venus have identified two regions of small-scale temperature fluctuations located in the vicinity of 45 and 60 km. A global study of the fluctuations near 60 km, which are consistent with wind-shear-generated turbulence, was conducted using the Pioneer Venus measurements. The structure constants of refractive index fluctuations cn2 and temperature fluctuations cT2 increase poleward, peak near 70° latitude, and decrease over the pole; cn2 varies from 2 × 10?15 to 1.5 × 10?14m23 and cT2 from 4 × 10?3 to 7 × 10?2°K2m?23. These results indicate greater turbulent activity at the higher latitudes. In the region near 45 km the refractive index fluctuations and the corresponding temperature fluctuations are substantially lower. Based on the analysis of one representative occultation measurement, cn2 = 2 × 10?16m?23and cT2 = 7.3 × 10?4°K2m?23 in the 45-km region. The fluctuations in this region also appear to be consistent with wind-shear-generated turbulence. The turbulence level is considerably weaker than that at 60 km; the energy dissipation rate ε is 4.9 × 10?5m2sec?3 and the small-scale eddy diffusion coefficient K is 2 × 103 cm2 sec?1.  相似文献

Results are given of the calculations of the group delay time propagating τ(ω, φ0) of hydromagnetic whistlers, using outer ionospheric models closely resembling actual conditions. The τ(ω, φ0) dependencies were compared with the experimental data of τexp(ω, φ0) obtained from sonagrams. The sonagrams were recorded in the frequency range ? ? (0.5?2.5) Hz at observation points located at geomagnetic latitudes φ0 = (53?66)° and in the vicinity of the geomagnetic poles. This investigation has led us to new and important conclusions. The wave packets (W.P.) forming hydromagnetic whistlers (H.W.) are mainly generated in the plasma regions at L = 3.5?4.0. This is not consistent with ideas already expressed in the literature that their generation region is L ? 3?10. The overwhelming majority of the τexp values differ considerably from the times at which wave packets would, in theory, propagate along the magnetic field lines corresponding to those of the geomagnetic latitudes φ0 of the observation points. The second important fact is that the W.P. frequency ω is less than ΩH everywhere along its propagation trajectory, including the apogee of the magnetic force line (ΩH is the proton gyrofrequency). Proton flux spectra E ? (30?120) keV, responsible for H.W. generation, were determined. Comparison of the Explorer-45 and OGO-3 measurements published in the literature, with our data, showed that the proton flux density energy responsible for the H.W. excitation Np(MV622) ? (5 × 10?3?10?1) Ha2 where Ha is the magnetic field force in the generation region of these W.P. The electron concentration is Na ? (102?103) cm?3. The values given in the literature are Na ? (10?10?103) cm?3. The e data considered also leads to the conclusion that the generating mechanism of the W.P. studied probably always co-exists with the mechanism of their amplification.  相似文献

The space erosion of stony meteorites has been determined to be 650μm 106y?1, while that of iron meteorites has been determined to be 22 μm 106y?1. The erosion rates are based on flux and size distributions of small particles in the solar system, meteoroid orbitals and the relation, determined by laboratory experiments, between excavated volume due to a collision and the size and velocity of the impacting small particle. Neither multiple collision or space erosion can explain the difference in cosmic ray exposure ages based on 40K and those based on 36Cl, 39Ar and10Be. It is concluded that there is a long term cosmic ray variation.  相似文献

Numerical solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation governing the transport of solar protons are obtained in three dimensions (time t, radial distance r, energy T) with the diffusion coefficient represented by κ = κ0rbTa. The October 4, 1968, solar flare particle event is re-examined, and the rise and decay of the proton flux profiles for > 10, ;30 and > 60 MeV particles can be reasonably well reproduced with an instantaneous injection and a distant (10 AU) free escape boundary. The best fit is achieved with a diffusion coefficient κ = 1.4 × 1020 r0.5 T0.75cm2sec where r is in AU and T in MeV.  相似文献

The quenching rate kN2 of O(1D) by N2 and the specific recombination rate α1D of O2+ leading to O(1D) are re-examined in light of available laboratory and satellite data. Use of recent experimental values for the O(1D) transition probabilities in a re-analysis of AE-C satellite 6300 Å airglow data results in a value for kN2 of 2.3 × 10?11 cm3s?1 at thermospheric temperatures, in excellent agreement with the laboratory measurements. This implies a value of JO2 = 1.5 × 10?6s?1 for the O2 photodissociation rate in the Schumann-Runge continuum. The specific recombination coefficient α1D = 2.1 × 10?7cm3s?1 is also in agreement with the laboratory value. Implications for the suggested N(2D) + O2 → O(1D) + NO reaction are discussed.  相似文献

The photodissociation of water vapour in the mesosphere depends on the absorption of solar radiation in the region (175–200 nm) of the O2 Schumann-Runge band system and also at H-Lyman alpha. The photodissociation products are OH + H, OH + H, O + 2H and H2 + O at Lyman alpha; the percentages for these four channels are 70, 8, 12 and 10%, respectively, but OH + H is the only channel between 175 and 200 nm. Such proportions lead to a production of H atoms corresponding to practically the total photodissociation of H2O, while the production of H2 molecules is only 10% of the H2O photodissociation by Lyman alpha. The photodissociation frequency (s?1) at Lyman alpha can be expressed by a simple formula
JLyαH2O=4.5 ×10?61+0.2F10.7?65100exp[?4.4 ×10?19 N0.917]
where F10.7 cm is the solar radioflux at 10.7 cm and N the total number of O2 molecules (cm?2), and when the following conventional value is accepted for the Lyman alpha solar irradiance at the top of the Earth's atmosphere (Δλ = 3.5 A?) qLyα,∞ = 3 × 1011 photons cm?2 s1?.The photodissociation frequency for the Schumann-Runge band region is also given for mesospheric conditions by a simple formula
JSRB(H2O) = JSRB,∞(H2O) exp [?10?7N0.35]
where JSRB,∞(H2O) = 1.2 × 10?6 and 1.4 × 10?6 s?1 for quiet and active sun conditions, respectively. The precision of both formulae is good, with an uncertainty less than 10%, but their accuracy depends on the accuracy of observational and experimental parameters such as the absolute solar irradiances, the variable transmittance of O2 and the H2O effective absorption cross sections. The various uncertainties are discussed. As an example, the absolute values deduced from the above formulae could be decreased by about 25-20% if the possible minimum values of the solar irradiances were used.  相似文献

We present a new and more accurate expression for the radiation pressure and Poynting-Robertson drag forces; it is more complete than previous ones, which considered only perfectly absorbing particles or artificial scattering laws. Using a simple heuristic derivation, the equation of motion for a particle of mass m and geometrical cross section A, moving with velocity v through a radiation field of energy flux density S, is found to be (to terms of order vc)
mv? = (SAc)Qpr[(1 ? r?c)S? ? vc]
, where ? is a unit vector in the direction of the incident radiation, r? is the particle's radial velocity, and c is the speed of light; the radiation pressure efficiency factor QprQabs + Qsca(1 ? 〈cos α〉), where Qabs and Qsca are the efficiency factors for absorption and scattering, and 〈cos α〉 accounts for the asymmetry of the scattered radiation. This result is confirmed by a new formal derivation applying special relativistic transformations for the incoming and outgoing energy and momentum as seen in the particle and solar frames of reference. Qpr is evaluated from Mie theory for small spherical particles with measured optical properties, irradiated by the actual solar spectrum. Of the eight materials studied, only for iron, magnetite , and graphite grains does the radiation pressure force exceed gravity and then just for sizes around 0.1 μm; very small particles are not easily blown out of the solar system nor are they rapidly dragged into the Sun by the Poynting-Robertson effect. The solar wind counterpart of the Poynting-Robertson drag may be effective, however, for these particles. The orbital consequences of these radiation forces-including ejection from the solar system by relatively small radiation pressures-and of the Poynting-Robertson drag are considered both for heliocentric and planetocentric orbiting particles. We discuss the coupling between the dynamics of particles and their sizes (which diminish due to sputtering and sublimation). A qualitative derivation is given for the differential Doppler effect, which occurs because the light received by an orbiting particle is slightly red-shifted by the solar rotation velocity when coming from the eastern hemisphere of the Sun but blue-shifted when from the western hemisphere; the ratio of this force to the Poynting-Robertson force is (Rr)2[(wn) ? 1], where R and w are the solar radius and spin rate, and n is the particle's mean motion. The Yarkovsky effect, caused by the asymmetry in the reradiated thermal emission of a rotating body, is also developed relying on new physical arguments. Throughout the paper, representative calculations use the physical and orbital properties of interplanetary dust, as known from various recent measurements.  相似文献

An approximate form of the Boltzmann equation has been used to obtain local ionization rates due to the absorption of galactic cosmic rays in the Jovian atmosphere. It is shown that the muon flux component of the cosmic ray-induced cascade may be especially importannt in ionizing the atmosphere at levels where the total number density exceeds 1019 cm?3 (well below the ionospheric layers produced by solar euv). A model containing both positive and negative ion reactions has been employed to compute equilibrium electron and ion number densities. Peak electron number densities on the order of 103 cm?3 may be expected even at relatively low magnetic latitudes. The dominant positive ions are NH4+ and CnHm+ cluster ions, with n ? 2; it is suggested that the absorption of galactic cosmic ray energy at such relatively high pressures in the Jovian atmosphere (M ? 1018to 1020cm?3) and the subsequent chemical reactions may be instrumental in the local formation of complex hydrocarbons.  相似文献

It is shown that Titan's surface and plausible atmospheric thermal opacity sources—gaseous N2, CH4, and H2, CH4 cloud, and organic haze—are sufficient to match available Earth-based and Voyager observations of Titan's thermal emission spectrum. Dominant sources of thermal emission are the surface for wavelenghts λ ? 1 cm, atmospheric N2 for 1 cm ? λ ? 200 μm,, condensed and gaseous CH4 for 200 μm ? λ ? 20 μm, and molecular bands and organic haze for λ ? 20 μm. Matching computed spectra to the observed Voyager IRIS spectra at 7.3 and 52.7° emission angles yields the following abundances and locations of opacity sources: CH4 clouds: 0.1 g cm? at a planetocentric radius of 2610–2625 km, 0.3 g cm?2 at 2590–2610 km, total 0.4 ± 0.1 g cm–2 above 2590 km; organic haze: 4 ± 2 × 10?6, g cm, ?2 above 2750 km; tropospheric H2: 0.3 ± 0.1 mol%. This is the first quantitative estimate of the column density of condensed methane (or CH4/C2H6) on Titan. Maximum transparency in the middle to far IR occurs at 19 μm where the atmospheric vertical absorption optical depth is ?0.6 A particle radius r ? 2 μm in the upper portion of the CH4 cloud is indicated by the apparent absence of scattering effects.  相似文献

An attempt to determine the radiance of forward scattered sunlight from particles in lunar libration regions was made with the white light coronagraph on Skylab. The libration regions could not be distinguished against the solar K + F coronal background; an upper limit to the libration cloud radiance is determined to be 2·5 × 10?11B?, where B? is the mean radiance of the solar disk. Employing a model of the particle composition and size distribution which has been proposed for the interplanetary medium, we determine upper limits for the density enhancements in the libration region from the upper limit of the forward scattered radiance presented herein. Similarly, the actual spatial density enhancement is calculated using the earlier observations of the libration region backscattered radiance (Roach, 1975). Enhancements of a factor of 102–103 are thus determined, depending upon material composition and size distribution used. By combining the forward and backscatter observations, it is possible to eliminate from consideration clouds whose power law particle size distribution exponent k is 2·5 and complex index of refraction m is 1·33?0.05i and 1·50?0.05i (i.e. absorbing ice and quartz particles, respectively). Finally, the radiance contrast of a possible model libration cloud is calculated with respect to the K- and F-corona/zodiaal light background and is shown to be a maximum in the vicinity of solar elongation angle ~30 deg.  相似文献

Linear polarimetry of Ceres at 10 μm is presented. These data represent the first published polarization measurements of an asteroid in the thermal infrared. It is found that Ceres is polarized at the 0.2-0.6% level. This data set is compared with theoretical models of the linear polarization of emitted radiation from a spherical plane. These models are used to derive the pole position and thermal inertia of Ceres. Ceres is best fit with a thermal inertia of 0.0010±0.0003 cal cm?2 °K?1sec12 and a pole orientation of βp = 36° ± 5°, λp = 270° ± 3°. It is concluded that 10μm polarimetry is a potentially powerful technique for remotely sensing the pole orientation and thermal inertia of asteroids.  相似文献

As the classical linear theory of secular perturbations for asteroids is known not to be adequate for computing the perturbations of asteroids with high eccentricities and/or inclinations, a seminumerical method to calculate the secular perturbations by including higher-degree terms in the disturbing function has been developed. It is here applied to asteroids with small values of (1 ? e2)12cos i, since the secular variations as well as their deviations from the results derived by the classical linear theory are generally large for such asteroids. It is found that the arguments of perihelion for five of the numbered asteroids are librating around 90 or 270°. For asteroids with (1 ? e2)12cos i less than 0.85 the results of the secular variations are tabulated. Also the stability of such orbits is discussed by comparing the orbital properties of short-periodic comets with them. Generally speaking, orbits of the asteroids are more stable than those of the short-periodic comets, and asteroids with librating arguments of perihelion are more stable than those with circular coplanar orbits although their orbital elements are changed more by secular perturbations.  相似文献

Incoherent scatter observations of the ionospheric F1 layer above Saint-Santin (44.6°N) are analyzed after correction of a systematic error at 165 and 180 km altitude. The daytime valley observed around 200 km during summer for low solar activity conditions is explained in terms of a downward ionization drift which reaches ?30 m s?1 around 180 km. Experimental determinations of the ion drift confirm the theoretical characteristics required for the summer daytime valley as well as for the winter behaviour without a valley. The computations require an effective dissociative recombination rate of 2.3 × 10?7 (300/Te)0.7 (cm3s?1) and ionizing fluxes compatible with solar activity conditions at the time when the valley is observed.  相似文献

An astrophysical electron acceleration process is described which involves turbulent plasma effects: the acceleration mechanism will operate in ‘collision free’ magnetoactive astrophysical plasmas when ion-acoustic turbulence is generated by an electric field which acts parallel to the ambient magnetic lines of force. The role of ‘anomalous’ (ion-sound) resistivity is crucial in maintaining the parallel electric field. It is shown that, in spite of the turbulence, a small fraction of the electron population can accelerate freely, i.e. runaway, in the high parallel electric potential. The number density n(B) of the runaway electron component is of order n(B)?n2(csU?)2, where n = background electron number density, cs = ion-sound speed and U? = relative drift velocity between the electron and ion populations. The runaway mechanism and the number density n(B) do not depend critically on the details of the non-linear saturation of the ion-sound instability.  相似文献

Numerical solutions of the equations of meteor ablation in the Earth's atmosphere have been obtained using a variable step size Runge-Kutta technique in order to determine the size of the residual mass resulting from atmospheric flight. The equations used include effects of meteoroid heat capacity and thermal radiation, and a realistic atmospheric density profile. Results were obtained for initial masses in the range 10?7–10?2 g, and for initial velocities less than 24 km s?1 (results indicated no appreciable residual mass for meteors with velocities above 24 km s?1 in this mass range). The following function has been obtained to provide the logarithm of the ratio of the residual mass following atmospheric ablation to the original preatmospheric mass
log r = 4.7 ?0.33v ?0.013v2 + 1.2 log m + 0.08 log2 m ?0.083v log mM
The pre-atmospheric mass and velocity are represented by m and v.When the results are expressed in terms of the size of the residual mass following atmospheric ablation as a function of the initial mass and velocity, it is found that the final residual mass is almost independent of the original mass of the meteoroid, but very strongly dependent on the original velocity. For example, the residual mass is very nearly 10?7 g for a meteoroid with velocity 18 kms?1 for initial masses from 10?7 to 10?3 g. On the other hand, a slight change in the initial velocity to 20 km s?1 will shift the residual mass to approx. 10?8 g. This strong velocity dependence coupled with the weak dependence on the original mass has important consequences for the sampling of ablation product micrometeorites.  相似文献
