Abstract

“Sequent occupance” is one of the fundamental geographical concepts explored in the American High School Geography Project. Its investigation involves the use of a variety of local source materials, often historical in their nature but significant in their geographical implications. One method of approach for school use is here illustrated by the case study of a British coastal resort and dormitory center—Southport, Lancashire. Among the materials used are the writings of literary visitors, one of whom in this case was Nathaniel Hawthorne, the American Consul in Liverpool in mid-19th century, who lived in Southport for a time. Apart from its methodological suggestions, it is hoped that the information presented in this article might provide useful overseas case study material for American teachers.  相似文献

Abstract

Environmental agencies in most states have an environmental education Web page that can point geography teachers to a variety of opportunities and resources to enhance their teaching. Most states provide linkages to local and national programs such as Project WET and Project WILD, and access to lesson plans and other teaching materials. A number of state agencies have environmental resource centers, teacher workshops, and grant programs for field trips and class projects. A few states have workshops that provide graduate academic credit and special certification. Much of the content of these programs contributes to fundamental geographic education themes as specified in the 1983 Guidelines in Geographic Education K–12 and Geography for Life: National Geography Standards 1994.  相似文献

Age profiles of geographers having varying topical and areal subfields are compiled using the Guide to Graduate Departments of Geography in the United States and Canada, 1983–1984 and the 1982 AAG Directory. GEO-Teach is a project funded by the Fund for the Improvement of Preservice Education (FIPSE). The project aims to develop a model preservice curriculum at the secondary level. It incorporates the newly published National Geography Standards and merges content with pedagogy through partnerships with faculty in education and other social and behavioral sciences to deliver the curriculum. Abstract

Project GeoSim is a multidisciplinary effort by members of Virginia Tech's Departments of Geography and Computer Science, College of Education, and Learning Resources Center to develop computer-aided education (CAE) software for introductory geography and related classes. GeoSim laboratory exercises draw on the five fundamental themes of geography for their subject matter. The programs emphasize interactive learning combining the information capabilities of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) with the techniques of computer simulation. The result is a series of geographic explorations that will make available some of the most exciting aspects of geography to a potential audience of 425,000 introductory geography students per year.  相似文献

This paper attempted to identify fractal and chaotic characteristics of the annual runoff processes in headwaters of the Tarim River. Methods of fractal analyses were used to explore several aspects of the temporal changes from 1957 to 2002. The main findings are as follows: (1) The annual runoff processes of the three headwaters of the Tarim River are complex nonlinear systems with fractal as well as chaotic dynamics. (2) The correlation dimensions of attractor derived from the time series of the annual runoff for the Hotan, Yarkand and Aksu rivers are all greater than 3.0 and non-integral, implying that all three rivers are chaotic dynamical systems that are sensitive to initial conditions, and the dynamic modeling of their annual runoff process requires at least four independent variables. (3) The time series of annual runoff in each river presents a long-term correlation characteristic. The Hurst exponent for the period of 1989 to 2002 suggests that we may expect to see an increasing trend in the annual runoff of the Aksu and Yarkand rivers in the years after 2002, but a decreasing tendency for the Hotan River in the same period. Abstract

During academic year 1999–2000, the Geography Department at Michigan State University (MSU) launched a program of online geography courses. Since then, four undergraduate online geography courses have been collectively developed and delivered to over 4,500 domestic and international students in association with MSU's Virtual University Design and Technology (vuDAT). The creation of each virtual course has taught valuable lessons concerning course development and administration; interactions with students have shed insight on course structure, content, and instruction. This article addresses development, management, and pedagogic concerns pertinent to the operation of online geography courses and offers suggestions to others who wish to develop online courses. Abstract

Over the next decade or so, the National Assessment for Educational Progress in Geography and the Geographic Education Standards Project promise to give geography a new definition as a school subject. This will challenge the educational community to re-examine how geography is taught and learned across all the grade levels, K-12. If geography is to be perceived as an essential subject in preparing students for citizenship as adults, not only must its image change, but its content and the pedagogy that delivers it must be modified as well. To achieve those ends, new curricular models grounded in cogent and applicable research must develop through partnerships of teachers, teacher educators, learning theorists, and professional geographers.  相似文献

This article presents a family program that extends the materials and meeting times of the Michigan Model Family Geography Challenge, including suggestions on creating a successful family night program. The article focuses on developing positive school-community relationships by inviting local community members to participate in fun academic lessons. In addition to watching the news together nightly, families meet four times during an eight-week period to engage in hands-on geography related activities. One lesson is introduced during each session and families work together to complete assigned tasks. Following the activity, families join together to eat and socialize. 本文利用2000-2015年WOS(Web of Science)的原始数据,以科研产出为视角,基于文献计量法,运用信息检索技术和TDA等引文分析工具,对遴选出的13个国际上具代表性的地理科学研究机构(中国科学院地理科学与资源研究所、北京大学城市与环境学院、北京师范大学地理与遥感学院、牛津大学地理与环境学院、剑桥大学地理系、伦敦大学联邦、加州大学系统、马里兰大学系统、杜伦大学地理系、伯明翰大学地理地球与环境科学学院、布里斯托大学地理科学学院、英属哥伦比亚大学地理系、国际应用系统分析研究所)的科研生产力、影响力、学科结构、国际合作力、重要成果等方面的发展现状进行了统计分析,结果显示,马里兰大学系统地理系总体学科影响力相对较强。中国科学院地理科学与资源研究所SCI&SSCI论文总数以绝对优势占居领先地位,但被引用情况却不尽人意,这也从一个侧面反映出学术影响力提升空间较大;与此同时,随着国际合作范围的扩展和国际合作能力的不断提升,该研究所的前沿开拓与创新发展力逐步走强。  相似文献
