P-mode oscillations in the Sun and stars are excited stochastically by Reynolds stress and entropy fluctuations produced by convection in their outer envelopes. The excitation rate of radial oscillations of stars near the main sequence from K to F and a subgiant K IV star have been calculated from numerical simulations of their surface convection zones. P-mode excitation increases with increasing effective temperature (until envelope convection ceases in the F stars) and also increases with decreasing gravity. The frequency of the maximum excitation decreases with decreasing surface gravity.  相似文献

In this study V2109 Cyg (a pulsating δ Scuti star) has been modelled. In treating the oscillation equations perturbation in gravitational potential energy has been taken into account. Both radial and nonradial oscillations are treated with adiabatic approximation. The so called radial fundamental frequency (5.3745 c/d) and the nonradial frequency (5.8332 c/d) were obtained within a satisfactory precision. It was found that the Cowling approximation introduced more error as one went from low overtones to high overtones in radial oscillations. A similar trend was observed in nonradial case with low values of l. By keeping the effective temperatures almost the same as with V2109 Cyg two more models with different masses have also been calculated to see the effect of inclusion of perturbation in gravitational potential energy on oscillation frequencies in different masses. Conclusion arrived is that one must be careful to employ the Cowling approximation especially for high nonradial oscillation frequencies.

The possible origin or coherent oscillations in X-ray bursters is discussed. Such oscillations with a period of the order of 10 ms have recently been observed. At this point it seems impossible to draw final conclusions on their nature. Nevertheless, it is shown that nonradial pulsations of a neutron star or torsional oscillations of a neutron star's crust seem to be an attractive possibility.  相似文献

In the traditional axisymmetric models of the 11-year solar cycle, oscillations of the magnetic fields appear in the background of nonoscillating (over time scale considered) turbulent velocity fields and differential rotation. In this paper, an alternative approach is developed: The excitation of magnetic oscillations with the 22-year period is the consequence of hydrodynamic oscillations with the 11-year period. In the excitation of hydrodynamic oscillations, two processes taking place in high latitudes near the interface between the convective and radiative zones play a key role. One is forcing of the westerly zonal flow, the conditions for which are due to deformation of the interfacial surface. The other process is the excitation of a shear instability of zonal flow as a consequence of a strong radial gradient of angular velocity. The development of a shear instability at some stage brings about the disruption of the forcing of differential rotation. In the first (hydrodynamic) part of the paper, the dynamics of axisymmetric flows near the bottom of the convection zone is numerically simulated. Forcing of differential rotation having velocity shear in latitude and the existence of solutions in the form of torsional waves with the 11-year oscillation period are shown. In the second part the dynamics of the magnetic field is studied. The most pronounced peculiarities of the solutions are the existence of forced oscillations with the 22-year period and the drift of the toroidal magnetic field component from the mid latitudes to the equator. In high and low latitudes after cycle maximum, the toroidal component is of opposite sign in accordance with observations. In the third part, the transport of momentum from the bottom of the convection zone to the outer surface by virtue of diffusivity is considered. The existence of some sources of differential rotation in the convection zone is not implied. A qualitative correspondence of the differential rotation profile in the bulk of the convection zone and on its outer surface to experimental data is shown. The time correspondence between torsional and magnetic oscillations is also in accordance with observations.  相似文献

We investigate a model for the excitation of high-order oscillations in roAp stars. In this model we assume that the strong concentration of magnetic field about the magnetic poles is enough to suppress convection. Thus the model considered is composed of two polar regions, in which convection is presumed to be suppressed totally, and an equatorial region, where the convection is unaffected. This model is generated by building pairs of locally spherically symmetrical equilibria to represent the polar and equatorial regions of the star, which are patched together below the base of the convection zone. Gravitational settling of heavy elements is taken into account by choosing appropriate chemical composition profiles for both the polar and equatorial regions. Our results indicate that the composite model is unstable against axisymmetric non-radial high-order modes of pulsation that are aligned with the magnetic poles. The oscillations are excited by the κ mechanism acting principally in the hydrogen ionization zones of the polar regions. The effect of the lateral inhomogeneity on the second frequency differences is also investigated; we find that the perturbation to them by the inhomogeneity is of the same order as the second differences themselves, thereby hindering potential attempts to use such differences to identify the degrees of the modes in a straightforward way.  相似文献

The general case of non-radial accretion is assumed to occur in real binary systems containing X-ray pulsars. The structure and the stability of the magnetosphere, the interaction between the magnetosphere and accreted matter, as well as evolution of neutron star in close binary system are examined within the framework of the two-stream model of nonradial accretion onto a magnetized neutron star. Observable parameters of X-ray pulsars are explained in terms of the model considered.  相似文献

The stability of radial solar acoustic oscillations is studied using a time-dependent formulation of mixing-length theory. Though the radiation field is treated somewhat simplistically with the Eddington approximation, and we appreciate that any coupling of the pulsation to the radiation field is important, for the lower frequency radial modes that have been computed this should not produce too serious an error. Instead, we have concentrated upon treating the coupling with convection as accurately as is currently possible with generalized mixing-length theory in order to learn something about its pertinence. Our principal conclusion is that, according to this theory, solar radial acoustic oscillations are expected to be stable and generated by turbulence. Moreover, the theory predicts changes in mode frequency that may, in part, explain the discrepancy between solar observations and the adiabatic pulsation frequencies of theoretical models. We also compute the amplitudes of the modes using a theory of stochastic excitation. These are in good agreement with observed power spectra.  相似文献

Linear time-domain simulations of acoustic oscillations are unstable in the stellar convection zone. To overcome this problem it is customary to compute the oscillations of a stabilized background stellar model. The stabilization affects the result, however. Here we propose to use a perturbative approach (running the simulation twice) to approximately recover the acoustic wave field while preserving seismic reciprocity. To test the method we considered a 1D standard solar model. We found that the mode frequencies of the (unstable) standard solar model are well approximated by the perturbative approach within 1 μHz for low-degree modes with frequencies near 3 mHz. We also show that the perturbative approach is appropriate for correcting rotational-frequency kernels. Finally, we comment that the method can be generalized to wave propagation in 3D magnetized stellar interiors because the magnetic fields have stabilizing effects on convection.  相似文献

Observation of global oscillations of the Sun constitutes a primitive seismology of the solar interior. The frequencies, if correctly identified with definite normal modes of vibration, provide a measure of the average velocity of sound in the interior and thereby of its composition and temperature. Fine structure in the frequencies of nonradial modes may provide information on their character (multiplicity) and on the rotation of the solar interior. Study of the amplitudes and phase fluctuations of the vibrations may clarify the excitation and damping of the vibrations. After a brief historical review emphasizing global velocity spectroscopy an account is given of the present status of the observations of global oscillations in the range of periods of 3 to 160 min. Finally the future capabilities of the observational techniques and their resultant potential is discussed.Proceedings of the 14th ESLAB Symposium on Physics of Solar Variations, 16–19 September 1980, Scheveningen, The Netherlands.  相似文献

The influence of turbulence on the frequencies of free acoustic modes in convection zones is considered. The frequencies are modified via the speed of sound by the turbulence-induced alterations of the effective pressure: (i) by the correlated fluctuations of temperature and density and (ii) the pressure part of the Reynolds stress. The two effects shift the frequency of low l p-modes in opposite directions. In addition, the correlation of the density fluctuations with the random velocity — the eddy-mass flow — is also relevant. It is, in a steady state, balanced by a vertical mean velocity. The balance results in a rather small net effect completely disappearing for highly nonradial oscillations. Both effects of the density fluctuations produce a redshift of the low l p-mode frequencies. The Reynolds stress, however, makes a blueshift of the frequencies relative to that computed for a laminar gas. This effect dominates for subsonic turbulences. The applied second-order correlation-approximation, however, only holds for the lowest frequencies, where the KORONAS (solar minimum) data are indicating a blueshift. Of particular importance for the present concept is the expected cycle-variations of the lineshifts, i.e. the consideration of the magnetic modification of the various contributions. Observations may show whether the suggested modifications of the solar oscillation theory are correct.  相似文献

By using a non-local time-dependent theory of stellar convection, the solar non-adiabatic pulsations of the low- and intermediate-degree (l < 25) modes are calculated. The results show that the non-radial p1 modes of l = 1–5 are pulsationally unstable. However, the adjacent g, f, p2-p5 modes and the p1 modes of l > 5 are stable. From the analysis of the diagram of integrated work it is discovered that the excitation of oscillations comes from the radiation zone beneath the convective region. Whether the sun possesses unstable low-degree p1 modes is of signi?cant importance for clarifying the excitation mechanism of solar ?ve-minute oscillations.  相似文献

There has for some time been evidence of variability in radiochemical solar neutrino measurements, but this evidence has seemed suspect since the Cerenkov experiments have not shown similar evidence of variability. The present reanalysis of Super-Kamiokande data shows strong evidence of r-mode oscillations. The frequencies of these oscillations correspond to a region with a sidereal rotation rate of 13.97 year−1. This estimate is incompatible with the rotation rate in the convection zone but is compatible with current estimates of the rotation rate in the radiative zone. The excitation of r modes in the radiative zone may be due to a velocity field originating in or related to the nuclear-burning core.  相似文献

The discovery of the solar global oscillations, and their identification to many radial and nonradial eigenmodes of the Sun, have opened a new important field of research called solar seismology, in which we may probe the internal structure of the Sun by using its oscillations. In recent years, pulsations and oscillation-related phenomena have also been discovered in many stars which were hitherto regarded as non-pulsating stars. They include white dwards (ZZ Ceti-stars), Ap-stars, early-type stars with slow and rapid rotation (53 Per and Oph-stars, respectively). Developments in high spectral and high time-resolution observations will be expected to reveal variability in many other stars as well, in near future. In this review, the general properties of stellar eigenmode oscillations are first discussed. Recent observational and theoretical developments in the solar seismology and on pulsations and oscillations of newly discovered variable stars will then be reviewed.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

The excitation mechanism of solar five-minute oscillations is studied in the present paper. We calculated the non-adiabatic oscillations of low- and intermediate-degree (l = 1  25) g4-p39 modes for the Sun. Both the thermodynamic and dynamic couplings are taken into account by using our non-local and time-dependent theory of convection. The results show that all the lowfrequencyf- and p-modes with periods P > 5.4 min are pulsationally unstable, while the coupling between convection and oscillations is neglected. However, when the convection coupling is taken into account, all the g- and low-frequency f- and p-modes with periods longer than 16 minutes (except the low-degree p1-modes) and the high frequency p-modes with periods shorter than 3 minutes become stable, and the intermediate-frequency p-modes with period from 3 to 16 minutes are pulsationally unstable. The pulsation amplitude growth rates depend only on the frequency and almost do not depend on l. They achieve the maximum at ν 3700 μHz (or P 270 sec). The coupling between convection and oscillations plays a key role for stabilization of low-frequency f- and p-modes and excitation of intermediate-frequency p-modes. We propose that the solar 5-minute oscillations are not caused by any single excitation mechanism, but they are resulted from the combined effect of “regular” coupling between convection and oscillations and turbulent stochastic excitation. For low- and intermediatefrequency p-modes, the coupling between convection and oscillations dominates; while for high-frequency modes, stochastic excitation dominates.  相似文献

All evidence of the solar origin of 160-min period oscillations is collected, and the present state of observations of this oscillation in optical and radio-ranges is considered. The main results are summarized: (a) the 160-min oscillation was observed in 1981 as well as before, (b) an attempt to find a nonradial component with l = 2 has failed, (c) the intensity and circular polarization of radioemission show with statistical significance the presence of this 160-min periodicity.Proceedings of the 66th IAU Colloquium: Problems in Solar and Stellar Oscillations, held at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, U.S.S.R., 1–5 September, 1981.  相似文献

The linear stability analysis of the radial and non-radial oscillations for the evolutionary model of a star with the mass of 0.6∼3 M8 has been per- formed by using the nonlocal and time-dependent convection theory. The results show that the unstable low-temperature stars on the right side of the instabil- ity strip in the HR diagram can be divided into two groups. One is of the stars of solar-like oscillations, composed of the main-sequence dwarfs, subgiants, and the red giants with low- and intermediate-luminosity, which are unstable in the intermediate- and high-order (nr ≥ 12) p-modes, but stable in the low- order (nr ≤ 5) p-modes. Another is of the Mira-like stars, composed of the luminous red giants and AGB stars, which are just contrary to the solar-like stars, unstable in the low-order (nr ≤ 5) p-modes, but stable in the intermediate- and high-order (nr ≥ 12) p-modes. On the red edge of Cepheid (δ Scuti) insta- bility strip, the oscillations of solar-like and Mira-like stars can be explained uniformly by the coupling between convection and oscillations (CCO). For the low-temperature stars on the right side of the instability strip, the CCO is the dominant excitation and damping mechanism for the low- and intermediate-order p-modes, and the stochastic excitation of turbulence becomes important only for the high-order p-modes of solar-like oscillations.

The Herbig Ae star PDS2 was found to pulsate as a Pre-Main-Sequence delta Scuti star on the basis of R.E.M. telescope photometry. From the frequency analysis we have found four significant pulsation frequencies. We discuss these results and their interpretation through the adoption of nonradial pulsation models, deriving the first information on the intrinsic properties of this young star.  相似文献
