The aim of this paper is to quantitatively testify the ' small-scale sequential star formation ' hypothesis in and around bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). As a continuation of the recent attempt by Ogura et al., we have carried out   BVIc   photometry of four more BRC aggregates along with deeper re-observations of two previously observed BRCs. Again, quantitative age gradients are found in almost all the BRCs studied in the present work. Archival Spitzer /Infrared Array Camera data also support this result. The global distribution of near-infrared excess stars in each H  ii region studied here clearly shows evidence that a series of radiation-driven implosion processes proceeded in the past from near the central O star(s) towards the peripheries of the H  ii region. We found that in general weak-line T-Tauri stars (WTTSs) are somewhat older than classical T-Tauri stars (CTTSs). Also the fraction of CTTSs among the T-Tauri stars (TTSs) associated with the BRCs is found to decrease with age. These facts are in accordance with the recent conclusion by Bertout, Siess & Cabrit that CTTSs evolve into WTTSs. It seems that in general the equivalent width of Hα emission in TTSs associated with the BRCs decreases with age. The mass function (MF) of the aggregates associated with the BRCs of the morphological type 'A' seems to follow that found in young open clusters, whereas 'B/C'-type BRCs show significantly steeper MF.  相似文献

We monitored 16 X-ray selected young solar-type stars for light variation and found appreciable periodic light variability with amplitudes of a few hundredths of a magni-tude in nine of the objects. Using the method of Phase Dispersion Minimization (PDM) and Fourier analysis (software PERIOD04), the rotation periods of these stars were determined from the photometric data. The rotation periods of all nine stars are shorter than about 3days. It is suggested that, as with the Pleiades cluster, small amplitude light variations are quite common among young solar-type stars with rotation periods around 3 days or less. This gives further evidence for the spin up of solar-type stars predicted by models of angular momentum evolution of pre-main sequence stars.

We report the result of our near-infrared observations ( JHK s) for type II Cepheids (including possible RV Tau stars) in galactic globular clusters. We detected variations of 46 variables in 26 clusters (10 new discoveries in seven clusters) and present their light curves. Their periods range from 1.2 d to over 80 d. They show a well-defined period–luminosity relation at each wavelength. Two type II Cepheids in NGC 6441 also obey the relation if we assume the horizontal branch stars in NGC 6441 are as bright as those in metal-poor globular clusters in spite of the high metallicity of the cluster. This result supports the high luminosity which has been suggested for the RR Lyr variables in this cluster. The period–luminosity relation can be reproduced using the pulsation equation     assuming that all the stars have the same mass. Cluster RR Lyr variables were found to lie on an extrapolation of the period–luminosity relation. These results provide important constraints on the parameters of the variable stars.
Using Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) data, we show that the type II Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) fit our period–luminosity relation within the expected scatter at the shorter periods. However, at long periods (   P > 40  d, i.e. in the RV Tau star range) the LMC field variables are brighter by about one magnitude than those of similar periods in galactic globular clusters. The long-period cluster stars also differ from both these LMC stars and galactic field RV Tau stars in a colour–colour diagram. The reasons for these differences are discussed.  相似文献

About 30 photometrically variable red giant stars have periods less than 10 d, as determined by the compilers of the Hipparcos Catalogue from Hipparcos photometric measurements. These periods, when combined with estimates of the radii and masses of these stars, and with pulsation theory, imply that these stars are pulsating in very high overtones. We present several pieces of evidence which suggest that the periods may be spurious, as a result of the particular aliasing properties of the Hipparcos photometry. We conclude that the evidence for high-overtone pulsation in red giant stars is equivocal.  相似文献

Optical UBV(RI) C and infrared JHK photometry is presented of a small sample of giant stars with short periods in the Hipparcos catalogue. Observations were limited, but were sufficient to rule out most of the Hipparcos periods. Radial velocity measurement were also made for a few stars, over six successive nights. Low-level variability was detected in a few stars. It is argued that in most cases the brightness variations are primarily due to temperature changes. These findings show that high-overtone pulsations in M giant stars occur, if at all, in a far more limited number of stars than proposed in the authors' previous discussion of the Hipparcos data alone.  相似文献

We investigated continuous long-term photometric datasets of thirteen active stars, Ca II variability of one single mainsequence star, and 10.7 cm radio data of the Sun, with simple Fourier- and time-frequency analysis. The data reflect the strength of the activity manifested in magnetic spots. All studied stars show multiple (2 to 4) cycles of different lengths. The time-frequency analysis reveals, that in several cases of the sample one or two of the cycles exhibit continuous changes (increase or decrease). For four stars (V711 Tau, IL Hya, HK Lac, HD 100180) and for the Sun we find that the cycle length changes are strong, amounting to 10–50% during the observed time intervals. The cycle lengths are generally longer for stars with longer rotational periods. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We report the discovery of large-amplitude (∼0.25 mag) pulsations in the bright ( V =12.8) sdB star, PG 1605+072. The dominant period is 480 s, but more than 20 periods were present on at least three separate occasions. Frequency analysis of the complete data set yields more than 30 periods. A few of these are harmonics or linear combinations of the strongest modes. Excluding the latter, the periods span a range of almost 400 s, which contrasts with the typical range <20 s for most other EC 14026 stars.
Analysis of multicolour photometry limited any cool companion to being a main-sequence star of type M0 or later. Balmer line profile fitting yielded an effective temperature of 32 100±1000 K and a log g of 5.25±0.10, significantly smaller than in the other stars of the EC 14026 class, and possibly indicative of a more evolved state. The lower gravity is probably responsible for the fact that the pulsation periods and amplitudes are respectively much longer and larger than in other stars of the class. This star is an obvious target for asteroseismological investigation using a multilongitude photometric campaign.  相似文献

We present time-series B , V photometry of NGC 6229, obtained with the purpose of providing the first extensive CCD variability study of this cluster. As a result, we were able to obtain periods for all NGC 6229 variables, with the exception of five stars from the candidate list of Borissova et al. located very close to the cluster centre. Two stars suspected to be variables by Carney, Fullton and Trammell are first-overtone RR Lyrae (RRc) stars, whereas seven of the 12 candidates of Borissova et al. are confirmed variables – three of them being fundamental RR Lyrae (RRab) pulsators, two first-overtone pulsators, one an eclipsing binary (most likely an Algol system) and one a bright star whose variability status could not be satisfactorily determined. A new image subtraction method (ISM) suggested by Alard has been employed which, together with the Welch–Stetson technique, has allowed us to discover twelve new RR Lyrae variables in the cluster, for which ephemerides are provided. Ten of these are RRabs, whereas the other two are RRcs. As originally suggested by Mayer, NGC 6229 is clearly an Oosterhoff type I globular cluster. We also confirm that V8 is a Population II Cepheid of the W Virginis type, and suspect that this is the case for V22 as well. The physical properties of the NGC 6229 RR Lyrae population are contrasted with those of M3 (NGC 5272) using several different methods, including a standard period-shift analysis. Possible differences between these two clusters are discussed.  相似文献

The Hipparcos mission discovered a few dozen M giant stars with periods P shorter than 10 d. Similar stars may be found in other large data bases of new variables (e.g., OGLE). The three possible sources of the magnitude variations – pulsation, starspots and ellipsoidal deformation – are discussed in general terms. The parallaxes and V − I colour indices are used to calculate radii and temperatures for all M giant variables with P <100 d. Masses are estimated from the positions of the stars in a Hertzsprung–Russell (HR) diagram, using evolutionary tracks. Using these data, it is shown that starspots can be ruled out as a variability mechanism in almost all cases, and ellipsoidal variations in about half of the stars. Pulsation in very high-overtone modes appears to be the only viable explanation for the stars with P <10 d. Many of the stars may be multiperiodic. IRAS data are used to deduce information about reddening and circumstellar dust. The apparently low level of mass-loss, as well as the kinematics and the spatial distribution of the stars, indicates that they are from a relatively young (i.e., thin disc) giant star population.  相似文献

We report on observation and determination of rotational periods of ten weak‐line T Tauri stars in the Cepheus‐Cassiopeia star‐forming region. Observations were carried out with the Cassegrain‐Teleskop‐Kamera (CTK) at University Observatory Jena between 2007 June and 2008 May. The periods obtained range between 0.49 d and 5.7 d, typical for weak‐line and post T Tauri stars (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

We re‐discuss the evolutionary state of upper main sequence magnetic stars using a sample of Ap and Bp stars with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes and definitely determined longitudinal magnetic fields. We confirm our previous results obtained from the study of Ap and Bp stars with accurate measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus and mean quadratic magnetic fields that magnetic stars of mass M < 3 M are concentrated towards the centre of the main‐sequence band. In contrast, stars with masses M > 3 M seem to be concentrated closer to the ZAMS. The study of a few known members of nearby open clusters with accurate Hipparcos parallaxes confirms these conclusions. Stronger magnetic fields tend to be found in hotter, younger and more massive stars, as well as in stars with shorter rotation periods. The longest rotation periods are found only in stars which spent already more than 40% of their main sequence life, in the mass domain between 1.8 and 3 M and with log g values ranging from 3.80 to 4.13. No evidence is found for any loss of angular momentum during the main‐sequence life. The magnetic flux remains constant over the stellar life time on the main sequence. An excess of stars with large obliquities β is detected in both higher and lower mass stars. It is quite possible that the angle β becomes close to 0. in slower rotating stars of mass M > 3 M too, analog to the behaviour of angles β in slowly rotating stars of M < 3 M. The obliquity angle distribution as inferred from the distribution of r ‐values appears random at the time magnetic stars become observable on the H‐R diagram. After quite a short time spent on the main sequence, the obliquity angle β tends to reach values close to either 90. or 0. for M < 3 M. The evolution of the obliquity angle β seems to be somewhat different for low and high mass stars. While we find a strong hint for an increase of β with the elapsed time on the main sequence for stars with M > 3 M, no similar trend is found for stars with M < 3 M. However, the predominance of high values of β at advanced ages in these stars is notable. As the physics governing the processes taking place in magnetised atmospheres remains poorly understood, magnetic field properties have to be considered in the framework of dynamo or fossil field theories. We present spectroscopic observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope of six carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr dSph) and two foreground Galactic carbon stars. The band strengths of the observed C2H2 and SiC features are very similar to those observed in Galactic AGB stars. The metallicities are estimated from an empirical relation between the acetylene optical depth and the strength of the SiC feature. The metallicities are higher than those of the Large Magellanic Cloud, and close to Galactic values. While the high metallicity could imply an age of around 1 Gyr, for the dusty AGB stars, the pulsation periods suggest ages in excess of 2 or 3 Gyr. We fit the spectra of the observed stars using the dusty radiative transfer model and determine their dust mass-loss rates to be in the range  1.0–3.3 × 10−8 M yr−1  . The two Galactic foreground carbon-rich AGB stars are located at the far side of the solar circle, beyond the Galactic Centre. One of these two stars shows the strongest SiC feature in our present Local Group sample.  相似文献

We report the discovery of very rapid pulsations in three sdB stars from the Edinburgh–Cape blue object survey. The short periods, small amplitudes and multi-periodicity clearly establish these stars as members of the EC 14026 class. EC 11583−2708 has pulsation periods near 149, 144 and 114 s, though evidence is presented that the 149-s period is resolved into two periods at 148.87 and 148.55 s by the full photoelectric data set. The amplitudes of the detected variations are in the range 0.002–0.006 mag. The light variation of EC 20338−1925 is dominated by a period near 147 s with a very large amplitude for a variable sdB star (0.025 mag), though four other frequencies are detected with periods near 168, 151, 141 and 135 s and amplitudes in the range 0.002–0.005 mag. The third star, EC 09582−1137, displays a light curve which is virtually a textbook example of frequency beating, being produced by two pulsations of almost equal amplitude (∼0.008 mag) and periods near 136.0 and 151.2 s.  相似文献

PB 8783 is a member of the newly discovered class of pulsating sdB stars, the EC 14026 stars. The potential of the pulsations of these stars as diagnostic probes of their interiors can only be realized fully by intensive campaigns of multisite time series photometry. To this end we have undertaken a campaign spanning 2 weeks and involving data from five different sites. 183 h of data were obtained. Frequency analysis yielded at least 11 pulsation periods in seven discrete groups between 94 and 136 s. Three of the periods in one specific group are equally spaced in frequency, with a spacing of 0.94 μHz. The frequency spacings amongst the members of other groups are similar to this. A rotation period of ∼12 d is implied. A general scheme for identifying the observed modes is suggested. The periods from a detailed model are in good overall agreement with the observed periods, but some difficulties remain. Three additional periods in the range 61–63 s, and with very low amplitude, were also found. No convincing interpretation of these could be devised.  相似文献

Based on a search for multi‐periodic variability among the semi‐regular red variable stars in the database of the All Sky Automated Survey (ASAS), a sample of 72 typical examples is presented. Their period analysis was performed using the Discrete Fourier Transform. In 41 stars we identified two significant periods each, simultaneously present, while the remaining 31 cases revealed even three such periods per star. They occur in a range roughly between 50 and 3000 days. Inter‐relationships between these periods were analyzed using the “double period diagram” which compares adjacent periods, and the so‐called “Petersen diagram”, the period ratio vs. the shorter period. In both diagrams we could identify six sequences of accumulation of the period values. For five of these sequences (containing 97 % of all data points) we found an almost perfect coincidence with those of previous studies which were based on very different samples of semiregular red variables. Therefore, existence and locations of these sequences in the diagrams seem to be universal features, which appear in any data set of semi‐regularly variable red giants of the AGB; we conclude that they are caused by different pulsation modes as the typical and consistent properties of similar stellar AGB configurations. Stellar pulsations can be considered as the principal cause of the observed periodic variability of these stars, and not binary, rotation of a spotted surface or other possible reasons suggested in the literature. We present the results of a photometric study of X-ray-active weak-lined T Tauri (WTT) stars in the η Chamaeleontis star cluster. Multi-epoch V -band photometric monitoring during 1999 and 2000 of the 10 X-ray-active WTT stars found that all were variable in one or both years, with periods ascribed to rotational modulation of starspots. Comparison between the rotational and X-ray properties of these objects indicates the saturation level,     observed in other studies of X-ray-active pre-main-sequence stars, persists in the η Cha stars from the slow- to the fast-rotator regimes. Cousins VRI photometry of the WTT stars has enabled us to investigate further the photometric properties of these stars. The stars appear sufficiently coeval to distinguish near-equal-mass binaries within the sample. A new Hertzsprung–Russell diagram for these objects suggests ages of 4–9 Myr for M-type RECX primaries using the tracks of D'Antona & Mazzitelli.  相似文献

We present the results of measurements of magnetic fields of chemically peculiar (CP) stars, performed from the shifts between the circularly polarized components of metal and hydrogen lines (the Babcock method). The observations are carried out with an analyzer of circular polarization at the 6‐m telescope of the SAO RAS. We found that for the absolute majority of the objects studied (in 22 CP stars out of 23), the magnetic fields, determined from the Zeeman shifts in the hydrogen line cores, are significantly lower than those obtained from metal lines in the same spectra. This disparity varies between the stars. We show that instrumental effects can not produce the above features, and discuss the possible causes of the observed effect. The discovered condition reveals a more complicated structure of magnetic fields of CP stars than a simple dipole, in particular, a reduction of the field strength in the upper atmosphere with the vertical gradient, significantly higher than the dipole (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report the discovery of very rapid pulsations in two hot subdwarf stars from the Edinburgh-Cape blue object survey. The short periods, small amplitudes and multiperiodicity establish these stars as members of the class of rapidly-pulsating sdB stars. The spectrograms of both stars, however, show relatively strong He  ii 4686 and they are therefore more properly classified as sdOB. The light curve of EC 01541−1409 is dominated by two strong (∼1 per cent) variations with frequencies near 7114 and 7870 μHz (periods near 140.6 and 127.1 s), though at least five frequencies are present with amplitudes above about 0.002 mag. The light curve of EC 22221−3152 appears to be generated by at least 10 frequencies in the range 5670–11850 μHz (about 175–85 s) with amplitudes between about 0.01 and 0.001 mag, including the first overtone of the strongest variation. Somewhat surprisingly, this number of frequencies is detectable in observing runs as short as 3 h, probably due to the fact that the detected frequencies are well-separated.  相似文献
