The Alps are representing the most prominent topographic feature of central Europe in the last 30 Million years. Integration of sediment budget and thermochronological data show that crustal blocks within the Swiss and Eastern Alps experienced differential erosion and uplift, with eastward decreasing rates. Since 30 Ma, in the course of collision and slab breakoff, the Swiss and western Eastern Alps were uplifted and formed a mountain range. Moderate erosion rates stabilized  2 Myr later after adaption to the new base level. Between 28 Ma and 5 Ma, erosion rates shifted above and below different regional mean levels. These shifts of erosion rates were governed by changes of the tectonic setting. Moderate temporary drops of erosion rates and lowering of topography occurred at  21 Ma and  15 Ma in the course of lateral extension. Temporary rises occurred between 24 and 22 Ma during thrust loading and between 18 and 16 Ma during axial updoming of core complexes. By 5 Ma, a sustainable strong increase of erosion rates occurred in the Swiss and Western Alps. A much weaker increase is detected in the Eastern Alps somewhat later, which makes a tectonic trigger, probably a 2nd slab breakoff, more reasonable than a climatic trigger. However, this controversial 5-Ma event is superimposed by accelerated erosion after 2.7 Ma, governed by the onset of cyclic glaciations. Effective valley incision and sediment evacuation by glacial erosion caused isostatic compensation and pronounced young uplift of the Alps. The post-Eocene paleotopographic evolution of key areas is indirectly assessed on the base of erosion rates. Spatial change of paleotopography of the Alps and central Europe is estimated and illustrated in 3 paleogeographic maps.  相似文献

This paper addresses the influence of external forcing (changes in tectonics, sea level and climate) on the downstream and long-term (103–105 years) evolution of sediment composition along a fluvial longitudinal profile. The River Meuse served as a case study for a semi 2-D forward-modelling approach to simulate the downstream sediment transport in the 200- to 0-ka period. This has been related to bulk geochemical properties of the tributary catchments to quantify the bulk composition of the sediment load in the main river. The model was used to test the hypothesis that long-term fluvial dynamics influences sediment composition. The simulation exercise showed that long-term fluvial dynamics can yield systematic temporal changes in fluvial sediment composition, especially in high-relief areas. We tested a scenario of minimal discharges and maximum hillslope erosion during cold glacial periods (weathering-limited sediment supply), alternating with maximal discharges and minimal hillslope erosion during prolonged interstadials or interglacials (transport-limited sediment supply). This scenario largely reproduced the timing and direction of measured changes in the bulk and clay geochemistry of fine-grained sediments, which were deposited in the River Meuse lower reach from 13 to 0 ka. However, it failed to reproduce the measured amplitude of change, which was five to six times larger than the modelled amplitude. This suggests that climate-dependent changes in weathering intensity of rocks and saprolite in the source areas were more important and that aeolian inputs from outside the drainage basin have co-determined the sediment composition.  相似文献

In response to climatic warming, eustatic sea level has been predicted to rise by about 50 cm in the next century. While feedbacks between vegetation growth and sediment deposition tend to allow marshes to maintain their morphology under a constant rate of sea level rise, recent observations of marsh deterioration suggest that changes in the rate of sea level rise may induce loss of economically and ecologically important marshland. We have developed a three dimensional model of tidal marsh evolution that couples vegetation growth and sediment transport processes including bed accretion and wave erosion. We use the model to simulate the response of marshes and tidal flats along the Fraser River Delta, British Columbia to 100 yr forecasts of sea level change. Under low sea level-rise scenarios, the delta and its marshes prograde slightly, consistent with historical measurements. While accretionary processes greatly mediate the response to increased rates of sea level rise, vegetation zones transgress landward under median and high sea level rise rate scenarios. In these scenarios, low marsh erosion and constriction of high marsh vegetation against a dyke at its landward edge result in a 15–35% loss of marshland in the next century. Several important behavioral changes take place after 2050, suggesting that predictions based on field observations and short term model experiments may not adequately characterize (and sometimes underestimate) long-term change. In particular, the replacement of highly productive high marsh vegetation by less productive low marsh vegetation results in continued reduction of the system's total biomass productivity, even as the rate of loss of vegetated area begins to decline.  相似文献

Fluvial features on Titan and drainage basins on Earth are remarkably similar despite differences in gravity and surface composition. We determined network bifurcation (Rb) ratios for five Titan and three terrestrial analog basins. Tectonically-modified Earth basins have Rb values greater than the expected range (3.0-5.0) for dendritic networks; comparisons with Rb values determined for Titan basins, in conjunction with similarities in network patterns, suggest that portions of Titan’s north polar region are modified by tectonic forces. Sufficient elevation data existed to calculate bed slope and potential fluvial sediment transport rates in at least one Titan basin, indicating that 75 mm water ice grains (observed at the Huygens landing site) should be readily entrained given sufficient flow depths of liquid hydrocarbons. Volumetric sediment transport estimates suggest that ∼6700-10,000 Titan years (∼2.0-3.0 × 105 Earth years) are required to erode this basin to its minimum relief (assuming constant 1 m and 1.5 m flows); these lowering rates increase to ∼27,000-41,000 Titan years (∼8.0-12.0 × 105 Earth years) when flows in the north polar region are restricted to summer months.  相似文献

The surface of Titan has been revealed by Cassini observations in the infrared and radar wavelength ranges as well as locally by the Huygens lander instruments. Sand seas, recently discovered lakes, distinct landscapes and dendritic erosion patterns indicate dynamic surface processes. This study focus on erosional and depositional features that can be used to constrain the amount of liquids involved in the erosional process as well as on the compositional characteristics of depositional areas. Fluvial erosion channels on Titan as identified at the Huygens landing site and in RADAR and Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) observations have been compared to analogous channel widths on Earth yielding average discharges of up to 1600 m3/s for short recurrence intervals that are sufficient to move centimeter-sized sediment and significantly higher discharges for long intervals. With respect to the associated drainage areas, this roughly translates to 1-150 cm/day runoff production rates with 10 years recurrence intervals and by assuming precipitation this implies 0.6-60 mm/h rainfall rates. Thus the observed surface erosion fits with the methane convective storm models as well as with the rates needed to transport sediment. During Cassini's T20 fly-by, the VIMS observed an extremely eroded area at 30° W, 7° S with resolutions of up to 500 m/pixel that extends over thousands of square kilometers. The spectral characteristics of this area change systematically, reflecting continuous compositional and/or particle size variations indicative of transported sediment settling out while flow capacities cease. To account for the estimated runoff production and widespread alluvial deposits of fine-grained material, release of area-dependent large fluid volumes are required. Only frequent storms with heavy rainfall or cryovolcanic induced melting can explain these erosional features.  相似文献

Climate change may affect the sediment generation and transportation processes and the consequent sediment flux in a river. The sensitivity of suspended sediment flux to climate change in the Longchuanjiang catchment is investigated with Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). ANNs were calibrated and validated using sediment flux data from 1960 to 1990 during which the influence from human activities was relatively stable. The established ANN is used to predict the responses of sediment flux to 25 hypothetical climate scenarios, which were generated by adjusting the baseline temperature up to − 1, 1, 2 and 3 °C and by scaling the baseline precipitation by +/ 10% and +/ 20%. The results indicated when temperature remains unchanged, an increase in rainfall will lead to a rise in sediment flux; when rainfall level remains unchanged, an increase in temperature is likely to result in a decrease in sediment flux. Same percentage of changes in rainfall and temperature are likely to trigger higher responses in wetter months than in drier months. However, it is the combination of the change in temperature and rainfall that determines the change of sediment flux in a river. Higher sediment flux is expected to appear under wetter and warmer climate, when higher transport capacity is accompanied by higher erosion rate.  相似文献

Dendrogeomorphologic approaches were used to study hillslope erosion and valley floor dynamics in a small drainage basin in the Colorado Plateau of northeastern Arizona, U.S.A. Root exposure in pinyon pines indicated hillslope erosion averaged 1.9 mm/yr over the last 400 yr, but erosion has been highly episodic. Negative increment growth anomalies in hillslope trees are interpreted as the consequence of rapid aerial exposure of roots by erosion. During the last 300 yr, two of three major episodes of these growth anomalies occurred after abrupt transitions from prolonged, multi-year droughts to sustained, lengthy periods of above-average precipitation. The most recent episode of these growth anomalies began within a few years after 1905 and was associated with the largest precipitation shift (drought to wet interval) in the last 400 yr. In contrast to trees on eroding hillslopes, increment growth of trees in more geomorphically stable landscape positions closely tracked the regional precipitation signal. Two major alluvial fills on the adjacent valley floor are also linked to the abrupt changes in precipitation regimes and the associated increases in delivery of runoff and sediments from slopes. The clay-cemented sandstones weather rapidly; rapid weathering and sediment production make slopes highly responsive to decadal precipitation changes. Significant vegetation declines on slopes during extreme drought make hillslope soils more prone to erosion if heavy precipitation follows soon thereafter.  相似文献

An assessment is made of contemporary effective sea-level rise (ESLR) for a sample of 40 deltas distributed worldwide. For any delta, ESLR is a net rate, defined by the combination of eustatic sea-level rise, the natural gross rate of fluvial sediment deposition and subsidence, and accelerated subsidence due to groundwater and hydrocarbon extraction. ESLR is estimated under present conditions using a digital data set of delta boundaries and a simple model of delta dynamics. The deltas in this study represent all major climate zones, levels of population density, and degrees of economic development. Collectively, the sampled deltas serve as the endpoint for river basins draining 30% of the Earth's landmass, and 42% of global terrestrial runoff. Nearly 300 million people inhabit these deltas. For the contemporary baseline, ESLR estimates range from 0.5 to 12.5 mm yr 1. Decreased accretion of fluvial sediment resulting from upstream siltation of artificial impoundments and consumptive losses of runoff from irrigation are the primary determinants of ESLR in nearly 70% of the deltas. Approximately 20% of the deltas show accelerated subsidence, while only 12% show eustatic sea-level rise as the predominant effect. Extrapolating contemporary rates of ESLR through 2050 reveals that 8.7 million people and 28,000 km2 of deltaic area in the sample set of deltas could suffer from enhanced inundation and increased coastal erosion. The population and area inundated rise significantly when considering increased flood risk due to storm surge. This study finds that direct anthropogenic effects determine ESLR in the majority of deltas studied, with a relatively less important role for eustatic sea-level rise. Serious challenges to human occupancy of deltaic regions worldwide are thus conveyed by factors which to date have been studied less comprehensively than the climate change–sea-level rise question.  相似文献

The sediment load delivered from the Huanghe (Yellow River) to the sea has decreased sharply to 0.15 × 109 metric tons per year (0.15 Gt/yr) between 2000 and 2005, and now represents only 14% of the widely cited estimate of 1.08 Gt/yr. The river seems to be reverting to the pristine levels characteristic of the middle Holocene, prior to human intervention. Datasets from 1950 to 2005 from four key gauging stations in the main stream reveal distinct stepwise decreases in sediment load, which are attributed to both natural and anthropogenic impacts over the past 56 yr. Completions of two reservoirs, Liujiaxia (1968) and Longyangxia (1985), in the upper reaches of the river and their joint operations have resulted in stepwise decreases in sediment load coming from the upper reaches. Effective soil conservation practices in the middle reaches since the late 1970s, combined with the operation of the Sanmenxia and Xiaolangdi reservoirs, have also caused stepwise decreases in sediment load at Huayuankou in the middle reaches, but the decrease differs from that observed in the upper reaches. Decrease in precipitation is responsible for 30% of the decrease in sediment load at Huayuankou, while the remaining 70% is ascribed to human activities in the river basin, of which soil conservation practices contribute 40% to the total decrease. Sediment retention within reservoirs accounts for 20% of the total sediment load decrease, although there was notable sediment retention within the Xiaolangdi reservoir from 2000 to 2005. The remaining 10% of the decrease in sediment load is a result of the operation of reservoirs in the upper reaches. In the lower reaches, 20% of the sediment passing Huayuankou has been lost as a result of channel deposition and water abstraction. Soil conservation practices and the operation of reservoirs have lowered the content of coarser sediment (D > 0.05 mm) at Huayuankou, and reduced channel deposition in the lower reaches. In contrast, sediment loss owing to water abstraction in the lower reaches has increased considerably as water consumption for agricultural needs has increased. Therefore, the combined effects of climate change and human activities in the upper, middle, and lower reaches have resulted in stepwise decreases in the sediment load delivered from the Huanghe to the sea. The Huanghe provides an excellent example of the altered river systems impacted by climate change and extensive human activities over the past 56 yr. Further dramatic decreases in sediment load and water discharge in the Huanghe will trigger profound geological, morphological, ecological, and biogeochemical responses in the estuary, delta, and coastal sea.  相似文献

Collisions of bodies of the solar system have played an important role in their evolution and current observable state, but the mechanics and outcomes of those collisions are not well understood. This contribution discusses the mechanics and outcomes of those impacts, melding the existing theory, recent experiments and observations into a new and revised scaling theory, for both catastrophic disruptions and for the largest basins remaining for impacts below that threshold. New evidence is obtained by an analysis of those largest solar system basins and craters, and from some recent experiments on disruptions. The paper will present certain problems with the quantitative estimates of former approaches (Holsapple and Housen, Memorie della Societa Astronomica Italiana57, 65–85, 1986; Housen and Holsapple, Icarus84, 226–253, 1990), discuss remaining areas of uncertainty, and will give updated estimates for these important phenomena.  相似文献

The atmospheric erosion induced by impacts of cosmic bodies with sizes from ~100 m to 10 km is calculated for the Earth with its present atmosphere and for Mars with a dense carbon dioxide atmosphere that could be at the early stages of planetary evolution. Numerical results are compared to simple analytic models and calculations performed by other authors; approximate formulas are suggested. The evolutions of early atmospheres, which could exist at the late stage of the planetary accumulation, are numerically simulated using an integral model of impact-induced atmospheric erosion and replenishment in the approximation of a one-component atmosphere with a composition determined by the basic atmosphile component of the bodies falling onto the planet.  相似文献

Impact-induced seismic vibrations have long been suspected of being an important surface modification process on small satellites and asteroids. In this study, we use a series of linked seismic and geomorphic models to investigate the process in detail. We begin by developing a basic theory for the propagation of seismic energy in a highly fractured asteroid, and we use this theory to model the global vibrations experienced on the surface of an asteroid following an impact. These synthetic seismograms are then applied to a model of regolith resting on a slope, and the resulting downslope motion is computed for a full range of impactor sizes. Next, this computed downslope regolith flow is used in a morphological model of impact crater degradation and erasure, showing how topographic erosion accumulates as a function of time and the number of impacts. Finally, these results are applied in a stochastic cratering model for the surface of an Eros-like body (same volume and surface area as the asteroid), with craters formed by impacts and then erased by the effects of superposing craters, ejecta coverage, and seismic shakedown. This simulation shows good agreement with the observed 433 Eros cratering record at a Main Belt exposure age of 400±200 Myr, including the observed paucity of small craters. The lowered equilibrium numbers (loss rate = production rate) for craters less than ∼100 m in diameter is a direct result of seismic erasure, which requires less than a meter of mobilized regolith to reproduce the NEAR observations. This study also points to an upper limit on asteroid size for experiencing global, surface-modifying, seismic effects from individual impacts of about 70-100 km (depending upon asteroid seismic properties). Larger asteroids will experience only localized (regional) seismic effects from individual impacts.  相似文献

The Aeolian Dust Experiment on Climate Impact (ADEC) was initiated in April 2000 as a joint five-year Japan–China project. The goal was to understand the impact of aeolian dust on climate via radiative forcing (RF). Field experiments and numerical simulations were conducted from the source regions in northwestern China to the downwind region in Japan in order to understand wind erosion processes temporal and spatial distribution of dust during their long-range transportation chemical, physical, and optical properties of dust and the direct effect of radiative forcing due to dust. For this, three intensive observation periods (IOP) were conducted from April 2002 to April 2004.The in situ and network observation results are summarized as follows: (1) In situ observations of the wind erosion process revealed that the vertical profile of moving sand has a clear size dependency with height and saltation flux and that threshold wind velocity is dependent on soil moisture. Results also demonstrated that saltation flux is strongly dependent on the parent soil size distribution of the desert surface. (2) Both lidar observations and model simulations revealed a multiple dust layer in East Asia. A numerical simulation of a chemical transport model, CFORS, illustrated the elevated dust layer from the Taklimakan Desert and the lower dust layer from the Gobi Desert. The global-scale dust model, MASINGAR, also simulated the dust layer in the middle to upper free troposphere in East Asia, which originated from North Africa and the Middle East during a dust storm in March 2003. Raman lidar observations at Tsukuba, Japan, found the ice cloud associated with the dust layer at an altitude of 6 to 9 km. Analysis from lidar and the radio-sonde observation suggested that the Asian dust acted as ice nuclei at the ice-saturated region. These results suggest the importance of dust's climate impact via the indirect effect of radiative forcing due to the activation of dust into ice nuclei. (3) Studies on the aerosol concentration indicated that size distributions of aerosols in downwind regions have bimodal peaks. One peak was in the submicron range and the other in the supermicron range. The main soluble components of the supermicron peak were Na+, Ca2+, NO3, and Cl. In the downwind region in Japan, the dust, sea salt, and a mixture of the two were found to be dominant in coarse particles in the mixed boundary layer. (4) Observation of the optical properties of dust by sky-radiometer, particle shoot absorption photometer (PSAP), and Nephelometer indicated that unpolluted dust at source region has a weaker absorption than originally believed.A sensitivity experiment of direct RF by dust indicated that single scattering albedo is the most important of the optical properties of dust and that the sensitivity of instantaneous RF in the shortwave region at the top of the atmosphere to the refractive index strongly depends on surface albedo. A global scale dust model, MASINGAR, was used for evaluation of direct RF due to dust. The results indicated the global mean RF at the top and the bottom of the atmosphere were − 0.46 and − 2.13 W m− 2 with cloud and were almost half of the RF with cloud-free condition.  相似文献

In this article, we describe a simulation method for investigating the impacts of different grazing land management strategies on the productivity of (semi-)natural vegetation and the resulting feedback on land-use change. In a first application, we analyze the effects of sustainable and intensive grazing land management in the Jordan River region. For this purpose, we adapt and use the regional version of the spatially explicit modeling framework LandSHIFT. Our simulation experiments indicate that the modeled feedback mechanism has a strong effect on the spatial extent of grazing land. Consequently, the results of our study underline that the inclusion of such feedback mechanisms in land-use models can help to represent and analyze the complex interactions between humans and the environment in a more differentiated and realistic way, but they also identify the demand for more detailed empirical data on grazing land degradation in order to further improve the explanatory power of the model.  相似文献

In this study, we report on the validation of process-based forest growth and carbon and nitrogen model of TRIPLEX against observed data, and the use of the model to investigate the potential impacts and interaction of climate change and increasing atmospheric CO2 on forest net primary productivity (NPP) and carbon budgets in northeast of China. The model validation results show that the simulated tree total volume, NPP, total biomass and soil carbon are consistent with observed data across the Northeast of China, demonstrating that the improved TRIPLEX model is able to simulate forest growth and carbon dynamics of the boreal and temperate forest ecosystems at regional scale. The climate change would increase forest NPP and biomass carbon but decrease overall soil carbon under all three climate change scenarios. The combined effects of climate change and CO2 fertilization on the increase of NPP were estimated to be 10–12% for 2030s and 28–37% in 2090s. The simulated effects of CO2 fertilization significantly offset the soil carbon loss due to climate change alone. Overall, future climate change and increasing atmospheric CO2 would have a significant impact on the forest ecosystems of Northeastern China.  相似文献

Although fully coupled models of the earth system are now common, simpler model architectures maintain significant utility, and scientific investigations aimed at understanding paleoclimates are frequently conducted with fixed sea surface temperature (SST) or slab ocean modeling experiments. One of the challenges facing the paleoclimate community is that the proxy data used to generate SST boundary conditions exist at a finer resolution and with very limited spatial coverage when compared to a climate model. In addition, SST proxy estimates often represent a single season or annual average conditions. This mismatch in coverage and resolution frequently results in paleoclimate modelers using SST distributions that have very limited spatial and temporal variability. In many regions, a spatially and temporally detailed SST distribution may be necessary for the accurate reproduction of paleoclimatic conditions. Here we borrow from the concept of flux correction and, using available proxy estimates of SST as our guide, force a fully coupled earth system model to produce a spatially and temporally detailed SST distribution for the paleoclimate of the early Paleogene (45–65 Ma). The SST values we produce represent a conservative estimate of early Paleogene high latitude SSTs and match tropical temperatures for this time period well. In addition to matching proxy estimates, our model-derived SST distribution has spatial and temporal variability that meshes well with global climate model resolution. This detailed SST distribution is now available to us as we investigate the causes and sensitivities of early Paleogene climate in fixed SST and slab ocean modeling experiments. The method we used to generate this spatially and temporally detailed SST distribution may prove useful for those investigating other time periods in the past, or the future, for which detailed model boundary conditions are unavailable.  相似文献

We investigate the polar wander of Mars in the last ∼4.2 Ga. We identify two sets of basins from the 20 giant impact basins reported by Frey [Frey, H., 2008. Geophys. Res. Lett. 35, L13203] which trace great circles on Mars, and propose that the great circles were the prevailing equators of Mars at the impact times. Monte Carlo tests are conducted to demonstrate that the two sets of basins are most likely not created by random impacts. Also, fitting 63,771 planes to randomly selected sets of 5, 6, or 7 basins indicated that the identified two sets are unique. We propose three different positions for the rotation pole of Mars, besides the present one. Accordingly, Tharsis bulge was initially formed at ∼50 N and moved toward the equator while rotating counterclockwise due to the influence of the two newly forming volcanic constructs, Alba Patera and Elysium Rise. The formation of the giant impact basins, subsequent mass concentrations (mascons) in Argyre, Isidis, and Utopia basins, and surface masses of volcanic mountains such as Ascraeus, Pavonis, Arsia and Olympus, caused further polar wander which rotated Tharsis bulge clockwise to arrive at its present location. The extensive polar motion of Mars during 4.2-3.9 Ga implies a weak lithosphere on a global scale, deduced from a total of 72,000 polar wander models driven by Tharsis bulge, Alba Patera and Elysium Rise as the major mass perturbations. Different compensation states, 0-100%, are examined for each of the surface loads, and nine different thicknesses are considered for an elastic lithosphere. The lithosphere must have been very weak, with an elastic thickness of less than 5 km, if the polar wander was driven by these mass perturbations.  相似文献

Three-dimensional calculations are presented for the circumplanetary nature of the iogenic plasma source (pickup ions produced by electron and charge exchange processes in the plasma torus) created by O and S gases located above Io's exobase in its corona and escaping extended neutral clouds (designated as the “Outer Region”). These calculations are undertaken using neutral cloud models for O and S with realistic incomplete collisional cascade source velocity distributions and rates at Io's exobase and realistic spacetime loss processes in the plasma torus. The resulting spatial distributions for O and S about Jupiter are highly peaked at Io but extend at much lower density levels all about the planet, particularly within Io's orbit where they may play a role in the pitch angle scattering and energy loss of radially inward diffusing energetic electrons for the synchrotron radiation belts of Jupiter, in producing bite-outs in the energy distribution of energetic heavy ions near Io's orbit, and in providing a charge exchange source for energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) detected both near and far from Jupiter. For the iogenic plasma source created by these neutrals, two-dimensional distributions produced by integrating the three-dimensional information along the magnetic field lines are presented for the instantaneous values of the pickup ion rates, the total- and net-mass loading rates, the mass-per-unit-magnetic-flux source rate, the pickup conductivity, the pickup radial current, and the pickup ion power (or energy rate). On the circumplanetary spatial scale, the instantaneous iogenic plasma source is highly peaked about Io's position on its orbit around Jupiter. The degree of orbital asymmetry and its physical origin are discussed, and overall spatially integrated rates are presented. The spatially integrated net-mass loading rate is 154 kg s−1 and the total (electron impact and charge exchange) mass loading rate is 275 kg s−1. Rough minimum estimates are made for the spatially integrated total-mass loading rate created by the “Inner Region” (spatial region below Io's exobase) and are at least ∼1 to 2.5 times larger than that for the Outer Region. Implications of the iogenic plasma source created by the Outer Region and the Inner Region are discussed.  相似文献

Images returned by the MESSENGER spacecraft from the Mercury flybys have been examined to search for anomalous high-albedo markings similar to lunar swirls. Several features suggested to be swirls on the basis of Mariner 10 imaging (in the craters Handel and Lermontov) are seen in higher-resolution MESSENGER images to lack the characteristic morphology of lunar swirls. Although antipodes of large impact basins on the Moon are correlated with swirls, the antipodes of the large impact basins on Mercury appear to lack unusual albedo markings. The antipodes of Mercury’s Rembrandt, Beethoven, and Tolstoj basins do not have surface textures similar to the “hilly and lineated” terrain found at the Caloris antipode, possibly because these three impacts were too small to produce obvious surface disturbances at their antipodes. Mercury does have a class of unusual high-reflectance features, the bright crater-floor deposits (BCFDs). However, the BCFDs are spectral outliers, not simply optically immature material, which implies the presence of material with an unusual composition or physical state. The BCFDs are thus not analogs to the lunar swirls. We suggest that the lack of lunar-type swirls on Mercury supports models for the formation of lunar swirls that invoke interaction between the solar wind and crustal magnetic anomalies (i.e., the solar-wind standoff model and the electrostatic dust-transport model) rather than those models of swirl formation that relate to cometary impact phenomena. If the solar-wind standoff hypothesis for lunar swirls is correct, it implies that the primary agent responsible for the optical effects of space weathering on the Moon is solar-wind ion bombardment rather than micrometeoroid impact.  相似文献
