Summary To meet the challenge of developing a comprehensive weather and climate prediction model which can give realistic scenarios for many time scales, more computer power than is currently available will be needed. One possibility for alleviating this shortcoming is to increase the integration timestep. We propose and test several methods which may prove useful. One procedure is an expansion of the model dependent variables in a Taylor series. Application of this method to simple models indicates acceptable increases in timestep by a factor of five. A multi-level approach which is less complex to apply gives comparable results and is more successful when high accuracy is desired. To bypass the limiting constraint of the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition on gravity waves, an approach is suggested in which the prediction model is represented in its normal modes and the high frequency modes are balanced while the low frequency modes are predicted. Experiments with this procedure are described and in combination with the multi-level integration technique show substantial increases in integration timestep for acceptable integration results, both on the forecast and climate scale. 本文在包括对流层—平流层—中间层(0—80公里)的半球及全球大气模式中,求解特征值及特征函数问题,得到夏季及冬季纬向平均基流中发展型行星波及天气尺度波的增长率、相速度及空间结构。结果指出,在冬季环流中存在三种不同结构及相速的发展型波动:1.行星尺度的准稳定Green波(波数1—2),其振幅在平流层中上部达到极大;2.深厚而准稳定的Char-ney波(波数3—4),其振幅在对流层中达到极大;3.天气尺度的移动性Charney波,这是一些波数5—9的对流层波动。在夏季环流中存在两种发展型波动:中间层内自东向西移动的波动1—4及对流层中自西向东移的天气尺度波动。这些发展型波动的结构、移速及出现层次与实际大气中的瞬变波有相当好的对应,由此推论,深厚球面大气基本流的动力不稳定可能是激发这些波动的重要机制。此外,深厚模型与浅薄模型的对比分析指出,以行星波为对象的数值模式必须包括对流层和平流层,简单的对流层模式会严重歪曲行星波的结构与移速。  相似文献

本文按照广东省热带海洋气象研究所的热带有限区数值预报模式(TL-6)的空间离散方案导出了相应的热带大气运动的水平与垂直结构方程,并具体计算了垂直与水平模态。与关于热带大气运动的解析结果相似,本文所计算的正规模态中,重力波与Rossby波的频率分离特性也十分清楚。根据计算结果探讨了赤道地区Kelvin波与混合Rossby重力波的识别问题。最后讨论了用这组正规模态进行气象场滤波的问题。   相似文献

Summary The normal mode initialization procedures of Phillips (1960) and Temperton (1988) are re-examined and applied to one-dimensional linear and non-linear primitive equations models. The linear method is obtained by setting the first and second substantial time derivatives of the divergence to zero. The resulting state is free of gravity waves. In the non-linear procedure, the substantial time derivatives calculated from the model equations of the gravitational modes are set to zero by implicitly adjusting these modes only. Five-day numerical integrations are performed using both models. The results clearly show the importance of proper initialization. Semi-implicit algorithms are popularly used to deal with the gravitational term in numerical models. In this paper, we adopt the method of characteristics to compute the solutions for gravity waves on a sphere directly using a semi-Lagrangian advection scheme instead of the semi-implicit method in a shallow water model, to avoid expensive matrix inversions. Adoption of the semi-Lagrangian scheme renders the numerical model always stable for any Courant number, and which saves CPU time. To illustrate the efficiency of the characteristic constrained interpolation profile (CIP) method, some numerical results are shown for idealized test cases on a sphere in the Yin-Yang grid system.  相似文献

Summary The stability characteristics of trapped gravity waves, generated by an isothermal bounded tanh (z) velocity profile in the presence of a saturated finite layer, are studied. The saturated layer is introduced at different levels above the inlection point and the variations of moisture content, layer thickness and distance from the origin are examined. The growthyrates and phase speeds of the unstable modes are obtained by solving numerically the equations of motion in the linear, inviscid, Boussinesq limit, via the technique of Lalas and Einaudi (1976).It is shown that the presence of the saturated layer can significantly affect the stability characteristics of the waves. inereases in moisture, layer thickness and distance of the layer from the inflection point are found to amplify the wave response because the saturated layer behaves as a top boundtry to the shear flow. The presence of such effective boundaries is found to stabilize short wavelengths and destabilize longer wavelengths. Finally, an application of the results to a rainband case produces values of the wave parameters in good agreement with the observed ones.With II Figures  相似文献

Summary A semi-implicit non-hydrostatic mesoscale forescasting model, which is used operationally in the United Kingdom Meteorological Office, has been reformulated using two time levels and semi-Lagrangian advection so as to permit longer timesteps. The boundaries are found to be an important influence on the model's stability and two methods of suppressing wave reflection are described with the aid of a one-dimensional experiment. The model's responses to two dimensional flow over a ridge and to three-dimensional flow over an isolated mountain are then demonstrated. The reformulated model is more efficient than the original provided a timestep at least twice as long can be used. It is also superior both in having minimal damping (except at the boundaries), and in the accuracy of the advection scheme.  相似文献

The phase-averaged characteristics of the turbulent velocity fields beneath steep short wind waves are investigated. A scheme was developed to compute the phase of individual wind waves using spatial surface displacement data. This information was used to analyze the two-dimensional velocity data acquired using particle image velocimetry (PIV) in a wind-wave tank. The experiments were conducted at a fetch of 5.5m and at wind speeds that ranged from 4 to 10ms−1. Under these conditions previous studies have shown that a significant percentage of the waves are microscale breaking waves. An analysis of the phase-averaged results suggests under these conditions (short fetches and moderate wind speeds) a wind-driven water surface can be divided into three regions based on the intensity of the turbulence. These are the crests of microscale breaking waves, the crests of non-breaking waves and the troughs of all waves. The turbulence is most intense beneath the crests of microscale breaking waves. In the crest region of microscale breaking waves coherent structures were observed that were stronger and occurred more frequently than beneath the crests of non-breaking waves. Beneath the crests of non-breaking waves the turbulence is a factor of two to three times weaker and beneath the wave troughs it is a factor of six weaker. These findings provide additional support for the hypothesis that approximately two-thirds of the gas and heat fluxes occur across the turbulent wakes produced by microscale breaking waves.  相似文献

文中对谱点的分布作了定性分析和数值计算。结果发现:当基流存在切变时,无论是重力惯性波还是涡旋波都存在连续谱。在通常的环境下,对天气尺度的扰动,3支波动的连续谱不重叠,3支波动明显可分;当扰动尺度小于临界波长l0时,可出现涡旋波和一支重力惯性波的两波连续谱区的重叠,当扰动尺度小于l0/2时,可出现涡旋波和一对重力惯性波的三波连续谱区的重叠,此时两种波动不可分。当出现重叠谱时,若出现不稳定扰动,其频率的实部落在重叠谱区。  相似文献

Large amplitude, isolated, wave-like phenomena have been observed in the lowest 40 m of the strongly stably stratified atmospheric boundary layer overlying a coastal Antarctic ice shelf. The waves only occur when prevailing wind speeds are low. They always propagate from over the land, with phase speeds exceeding the local mean wind speed. They have wavelengths of the order of 200 m. Several examples are described and a summary of the statistical properties of these waves events is presented.  相似文献

By considering two analytical solutions of G. I. Taylor (1921) for dispersion in homogeneous turbulence, we derive a quantitative upper limit for the timestep dt to be used in the stochastic Lagrangian model; a more severe upper limit will probably exist in inhomogeneous turbulence. Acoustic sounders and in-situ meteorological sensors were used to record the boundary-layer flow structure along the eastern slopes of the Altamont Hills in central California during a wind energy field program. Oscillating speeds in this area suggest the development of quasi-stationary lee waves and rotors under certain atmospheric conditions. Data averaging of 15 minutes or less is needed to study these phenomena.  相似文献

The effects of sea-surface waves and ocean spray on the marine atmospheric boundary layer(MABL) at different wind speeds and wave ages were investigated. An MABL model was developed that introduces a wave-induced component and spray force to the total surface stress. The theoretical model solution was determined assuming the eddy viscosity coefficient varied linearly with height above the sea surface. The wave-induced component was evaluated using a directional wave spectrum and growth rate. Spray force was described using interactions between ocean-spray droplets and wind-velocity shear. Wind profiles and sea-surface drag coefficients were calculated for low to high wind speeds for wind-generated sea at different wave ages to examine surface-wave and ocean-spray effects on MABL momentum distribution. The theoretical solutions were compared with model solutions neglecting wave-induced stress and/or spray stress. Surface waves strongly affected near-surface wind profiles and sea-surface drag coefficients at low to moderate wind speeds. Drag coefficients and near-surface wind speeds were lower for young than for old waves. At high wind speeds, ocean-spray droplets produced by wind-tearing breaking-wave crests affected the MABL strongly in comparison with surface waves, implying that wave age affects the MABL only negligibly. Low drag coefficients at high wind caused by ocean-spray production increased turbulent stress in the sea-spray generation layer, accelerating near-sea-surface wind. Comparing the analytical drag coefficient values with laboratory measurements and field observations indicated that surface waves and ocean spray significantly affect the MABL at different wind speeds and wave ages.  相似文献

A linearized instability analysis model with five unknowns was proposed to describe disturbance motions under general oceanic background conditions, including large-scale current shear, density stratification, frontal zone, and arbitrary topography. A unified linear theory of wavelike perturbations for surface gravity waves, internal gravity waves and inertial gravity waves was derived for the adiabatic case, and the solution was then found using Fourier integrals. In this theory, we discarded the assumptions widely accepted in the literature concerning derivations of wave motions such as the irrotationality assumption for surface gravity waves, the rigid-lid approximation for internal gravity waves, and the long-wave approximation for inertial gravity waves. Analytical solutions based on this theory indicate that the complex dispersion relationships between frequency and wave-number describing the propagation and development of the three types of wavelike perturbation motions include three components: complex dispersion relationships at the sea surface; vertical invariance of the complex frequency; and expressions of the vertical wave-number (phase). Classical results of both surface waves and internal waves were reproduced from the unified theory under idealized conditions. The unified wave theory can be applied in the dynamical explanation of the generation and propagation properties of internal waves that are visible in the satellite SAR images in the southern part of the China Seas. It can also serve as the theoretical basis for both a numerical internal-wave model and analytical estimation of the ocean fluxes transported by wavelike perturbations.  相似文献

Temporally-growing frontal meandering and occasional eddy-shedding is observed in the Brazil Current (BC) as it flows adjacent to the Brazilian Coast. No study of the dynamics of this phenomenon has been conducted to date in the region between 22° S and 25°S. Within this latitude range, the flow over the intermediate continental slope is marked by a current inversion at a depth that is associated with the Intermediate Western Boundary Current (IWBC). A time series analysis of 10-current-meter mooring data was used to describe a mean vertical profile for the BC-IWBC jet and a typical meander vertical structure. The latter was obtained by an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis that showed a single mode explaining 82% of the total variance. This mode structure decayed sharply with depth, revealing that the meandering is much more vigorous within the BC domain than it is in the IWBC region. As the spectral analysis of the mode amplitude time series revealed no significant periods, we searched for dominant wavelengths. This search was done via a spatial EOF analysis on 51 thermal front patterns derived from digitized AVHRR images. Four modes were statistically significant at the 95% confidence level. Modes 3 and 4, which together explained 18% of the total variance, are associated with 266 and 338-km vorticity waves, respectively. With this new information derived from the data, the [Johns, W.E., 1988. One-dimensional baroclinically unstable waves on the Gulf Stream potential vorticity gradient near Cape Hatteras. Dyn. Atmos. Oceans 11, 323–350] one-dimensional quasi-geostrophic model was applied to the interpolated mean BC-IWBC jet. The results indicated that the BC system is indeed baroclinically unstable and that the wavelengths depicted in the thermal front analysis are associated with the most unstable waves produced by the model. Growth rates were about 0.06 (0.05) days−1for the 266-km (338-km) wave. Moreover, phase speeds for these waves were low compared to the surface BC velocity and may account for remarks in the literature about growing standing or stationary meanders off southeast Brazil. The theoretical vertical structure modes associated with these waves resembled very closely to the one obtained for the current-meter mooring EOF analysis. We interpret this agreement as a confirmation that baroclinic instability is an important mechanism in meander growth in the BC system.  相似文献

Abstract

As part of an extensive survey of the temperature and currents of Lake Erie, a vertical automatic profiling system (EVAPS) was deployed for three days in August 1980. This system consisted of acoustic current meters, temperature sensors and a pressure gauge. The buoyant sensor package was winched from the bottom up and down through the water column. The system collected essentially continuous vertical temperature and velocity profiles. From these profiles, the barotropic component of the flow was extracted; it shows the presence of longitudinal seiche and lunar tidal motions and demonstrates favourable agreement with a numerical model. An experimental momentum balance allows the identification of the important terms (Coriolis force, pressure gradient and local acceleration) and the crude estimation of the numerical value of the wind drag coefficient. The baroclinic part of the flow was decomposed into the three lowest order empirically‐computed internal wave modes. The first and second modes could account for most of the variation of the profiles. The temporal variation of the second mode was characteristic of pure inertial waves while that of the first mode was characteristic of inertial‐gravitational waves.  相似文献
