The joint use of accurate near- and mid-infrared photometry from the 2MASS and WISE catalogues has allowed the variations of the extinction law and the dust grain size distribution in high Galactic latitudes (|b| > 50°) at distances up to 3 kpc from the Galactic midplane to be analyzed. The modified method of extrapolation of the extinction law applied to clump giants has turned out to be efficient for separating the spatial variations of the sample composition, metallicity, reddening, and properties of the medium. The detected spatial variations of the coefficientsE(H ? W1)/E(H ? Ks), E(H ? W2)/E(H ? Ks), and E(H ? W3)/E(H ? Ks) are similar for all high latitudes and depend only on the distance from the Galactic midplane. The ratio of short-wavelength extinction to long-wavelength one everywhere outside the Galactic disk has been found to be smaller than that in the disk and, accordingly, the mean dust grain size is larger, while the grain size distribution in the range 0.5–11 µm is shifted toward coarse dust. Specifically, the mean grain size initially increases sharply with distance from the Galactic midplane, then decreases gradually, approaching a value typical of the disk at |Z| ≈ 2.4 kpc, and, further out, stabilizes or may increase again. The coefficients under consideration change with coordinate Z with a period of about 1312 ± 40 pc, coinciding every 656 ± 20 pc to the south and the north and showing a significant anticorrelation between their values in the southern and northern hemispheres at intermediate Z. Thus, there exists a unified large-scale periodic structure of the interstellar medium at high latitudes within at least 5 kpc. The same periodic variations have also been found for the extinction coefficient R V within 600 pc of the Galactic midplane through the reduction of different photometric data for stars of different classes.  相似文献

Photometry from the Tycho-2, 2MASS, andWISE catalogues for clump and branch giants at a distance up to 25 kpc toward the Galactic poles has allowed the variations of various characteristics of the infrared interstellar extinction law with distance to be analyzed. The results obtained by the extinction law extrapolation method are consistent for different classes of stars and different characteristics as well as with previous studies. The conventional extinction law with a low infrared extinction is characteristic of only a thin layer no farther than 100 pc from the Galactic plane and of two thin layers near Z = ?600 and +500 pc. Far from the Galactic plane, in the Galactic halo, the infrared extinction law is different: the extinction in the Ks, W1, W2, W3, and W4 bands is, respectively, 0.17, 0.16, 0.16, 0.07, and 0.03 of the extinction in the V band. The accuracy of these coefficients is 0.03. If the extinction law reflects primarily the grain size distribution, then the fraction of large dust grains far from the Galactic plane is greater than that in the circumsolar interstellar medium.  相似文献

An improved version of the 3D stellar reddening map in a space with a radius of 1200 pc around the Sun and within 600 pc of the Galactic midplane is presented. As in the previous 2010 and 2012 versions of the map, photometry with an accuracy better than 0.05 m in the J and Ks bands for more than 70 million stars from the 2MASS catalogue is used in the new version. However, the data reduction technique is considerably more complicated. As before, an analysis of the distribution of stars near the main-sequence turnoff on the (J ? Ks)?Ks diagram, where they form a distribution maximum, provides a basis for the method. The shift of this maximum, i.e., the mode (J ? Ks), along (J ? Ks) and Ks, given the spatial variations of the mean dereddened color (J ? Ks)0 of these stars, is interpreted as a growth of the reddening with increasing distance. The main distinction of the new method is that instead of the fixed mean absolute magnitude, dereddened color, distance, and reddening for each cell, the individual values of these quantities are calculated for each star by iterations when solving the system of equations relating them. This has allowed one to increase the random accuracy of the map to 0.01 m and its spatial resolution to 20 pc in coordinates and distance and to 1° in longitude and latitude. Comparison with other reddening estimates for the same spatial cells and Gaia DR1 TGAS stars shows that the constructed map is one of the best maps for the space under consideration. Its systematic errors have been estimated to be σ(E(J ? Ks)) = 0.025 m , or σ(E(B ? V)) = 0.04 m . The main purpose of the map is to analyze the characteristics of Galactic structures, clouds, and cloud complexes. For this purpose, the reddening map within each spatial cell has also been computed by analyzing the reddening along each line of sight.  相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of the first 2MASS (The Two Micron All Sky Survey) sampler data as observed at lower Galactic latitude in our Galaxy. These new near-infrared data provide insight into the structure of the thin disk of our Galaxy, The interpretation of star counts and color distributions of stars in the near-infrared with the synthetic stellar population model, gives strong evidence that the Galactic thin disk density scale length,h R , is rather short (2.7 ± 0.1 kpc).  相似文献

In this paper we collected almost all HAeBe stars known so far (253 sources in total) to photometrically study their infrared properties. The 2MASS, WISE, IRAS and AKARI data are employed to make analyses. It is shown from several two-color diagrams that from 1 µm to 60 µm infrared radiations from circumstellar disks with the power law distribution play a very important role for infrared excesses which are much larger than that for ordinary Be stars. In the WISE two-color diagram, (W2–W3) vs. (W1–W2), some sources show thermal emissions probably due to dust surrounded and enhanced PAH features at 3.3 and 11.3 µm. In the wavelength longer than 60 µm infrared radiations are not so influenced by the circumstellar disk, but mainly from the ISM surrounded.  相似文献

We describe the content and properties of UV source catalogs from GALEX’s All-Sky Imaging Survey (AIS, 5σ depth ≈19.9(FUV)/20.8(NUV) mag, in the AB system) and Medium-depth Imaging Survey (MIS, 5σ depth ≈22.6(FUV)/22.7(NUV) mag), constructed by Bianchi L., et al.: Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. (2010, in press). The catalogs contain 65.3/12.6 million (AIS/MIS) unique UV sources with photometric error in NUV less than 0.5 mag, over 21?435(AIS)/1579(MIS) square degrees. Matched optical data from GSC-II provide additional B, R, I photometry for the brightest sources, and SDSS provides u g r i z photometry over 7325(AIS)/1103(MIS) square degrees overlap areas. We discuss statistical properties that are relevant for understanding sample selection biases and completeness, in potential science applications of these catalogs. The FUV (1344–1786 Å) and NUV (1771–2831 Å) photometry uniquely enable selection of the hottest stellar objects, in particular hot white dwarfs (WD), which are elusive at optical wavelengths because of their hot temperatures and faint luminosities. From the GALEX-SDSS matched sources we selected ~40?000 Milky Way (MW) stars hotter than about 18?000 K (FUV-NUV?相似文献

A reanalysis of the (seemingly very distant) open cluster Shorlin 1, the group of stars associated with WR 38 and WR 38a, is made on the basis of existing UBV and JHK s observations for cluster members. The 2MASS observations, in particular, imply a mean cluster reddening of E BV =1.45±0.07 and a distance of 2.94±0.12 kpc. The reddening agrees with the UBV results provided that the local reddening slope is described by E UB /E BV =0.64±0.01, but the distance estimates in the 2MASS and UBV systems agree only if the ratio of total-to-selective extinction for the associated dust is R=A V /E BV =4.0±0.1. Both results are similar to what has been obtained for adjacent clusters in the Eta Carinae region by similar analyses, which suggests that “anomalous” dust extinction is widespread through the region, particularly for groups reddened by relatively nearby dust. Dust associated with the Eta Carinae complex itself appears to exhibit more “normal” qualities. The results have direct implications for the interpretation of distances to optical spiral arm indicators for the Galaxy at =287°–291°, in particular the Carina arm here is probably little more than ∼2 kpc distant, rather than 2.5–3 kpc distant as implied in previous studies. Newly-derived intrinsic parameters for the two cluster Wolf-Rayet stars WR 38 (WC4) and WR 38a (WN5) are in good agreement with what is found for other WR stars in Galactic open clusters, which was not the case previously.  相似文献

The first results of the construction of a three-dimensional reddening map for stars within 1600 pc of the Sun are presented. Analysis of the distribution of 70 million stars from the 2MASS catalog with the most accurate photometry on the (J-Ks)-Ks diagram supplemented with Monte Carlo simulations has shown that one of the maxima of this distribution corresponds to F-type dwarfs and subgiants with a mean absolute magnitude M Ks = 2 m 5. The shift of this maximum toward large J-Ks with increasing Ks reflects the reddening of these stars with increasing heliocentric distance. The distribution of the sample of stars over Ks, l, and b cells with a statistically significant number of stars in each cell corresponds to their distribution over three-dimensional spatial cells. As a result, the reddening E(J-Ks) has been determined with an accuracy of 0· m 03 for spatial cells with a side of 100 pc. All of the known large absorbing clouds within 1600 pc of the Sun have manifested themselves in the results obtained. The distances to the near and far edges of the clouds have been determined with a relative accuracy of 15%. The cases where unknown clouds are hidden behind known ones on the same line of sight have been found. The distance dependence of reddening is considered for various Galactic latitudes and longitudes. The absorbing matter of the Gould Belt is shown to manifest itself at latitudes up to 40° and within 600 pc of the Sun. The size and influence of the Gould Belt may have been underestimated thus far. The absorbing matter at latitudes up to 60° and within 1600 pc of the Sun has been found to be distributed predominantly in the first and second quadrants in the southern hemisphere and in the third and fourth quadrants in the northern hemisphere. The warping of the absorbing layer in the near Galaxy apparently manifests itself in this way. A nonrandom orientation of the clouds relative to the Sun is possible. The mass of the baryonic dark matter in solar neighborhoods can then be considerably larger than is generally believed.  相似文献

Multicolor photometry from the Tycho-2 and 2MASS catalogues for 11 990 OB and 30 671 K-type red giant branch stars is used to detect systematic large-scale variations of the interstellar extinction law within the nearest kiloparsec. The characteristic of the extinction law, the total-to-selective extinction ratio Rv, which also characterizes the size and other properties of interstellar dust grains, has been calculated for various regions of space by the extinction law extrapolation method. The results for the two classes of stars agree: the standard deviation of the “red giants minus OB” Rv differences within 500 pc of the Sun is 0.2. The detected Rv variations between 2.2 and 4.4 not only manifest themselves in individual clouds but also span the entire space near the Sun, following Galactic structures. In the Local Bubble within about 100 pc of the Sun, Rv has a minimum. In the inner part of the Gould Belt and at high Galactic latitudes, at a distance of about 150 pc from the Sun, Rv reaches a maximum and then decreases to its minimum in the outer part of the Belt and other directions at a distance of about 500 pc from the Sun, returning to its mean values far from the Sun. The detected maximum of Rv at high Galactic latitudes is important when allowance is made for the interstellar extinction toward extragalactic objects. In addition, a monotonic increase in Rv by 0.3 per kpc toward the Galactic center has been found near the Galactic equator. It is consistent with the result obtained by Zasowski et al. (2009) for much of the Galaxy. Ignoring the Rv variations and traditionally using a single value for the entire space must lead to systematic errors in the calculated distances reaching 10%.  相似文献

We investigate the linear polarization in the two deepest infrared absorption bands observed in the spectra of protostars, the water-ice band with the center near 3.1 μm and the silicate band with the center near 9.7 μm, using a core-mantle confocal spheroid model with various axial ratios a/b and relative volumes of the core material. We consider the effect of the grain shape, structure, and type (oblate, prolate) as well as the type of grain orientation and its location relative to the incident ray of light and the magnetic field direction on the central wavelengths of the two bands and the polarizability in the bands. We have found that the observed relationships between the polarizability in the bands and the ratio of their optical depths at the band centers can be explained if we choose slightly oblate or prolate particles (a/b ≲2 for the silicate band and 1.3 ≲ a/b ≲ 2 for the ice band). For any type of orientation, the core-mantle confocal spheroid model requires different axial ratios for the ice and silicate bands to account for the observed polarization. We show that picket-fence-oriented particles can explain the observed polarization in the ice band at angles α between the particle rotation axis and the incident ray ≳30° and in the silicate band at any α. Perfectly Davis-Greenstein-oriented particles can explain the observed polarization in the ice band at angles Ω between the line of sight and the magnetic field direction ≳60° and in the silicate band at any Ω. The orientation parameter ζ (imperfect Davis-Greenstein orientation) must be no more than 0.5 (oblate particles) and 0.1 (prolate particles) for the ice band and can be arbitrary for the silicate band. The infrared photometric study of SDSS selected Narrow Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies (NLS1s) is presented in this paper. We have made cross-identifications for such NLS1s with 2MASS and WISE observations. Finally 992 NLS1s have 2MASS and WISE counterparts. Comparisons of NLS1s with the Broad Line Seyfert 1 (BLS1s) and Seyfert 2 galaxies are made. It is shown that from 1 µm to 5 µm NLS1s are redder than BLS1s and Seyfert 2 galaxies possibly due to the richer dust environment in NLS1 nuclei or to the orientation effect while in the longer wavelengths those three kinds of sources have quite similar behavior indicative of radiation mainly from the similar warm starburst-related dust and the related AGN dust.In addition, relations between infrared colors and related (to Hβ) strengths of some important lines are also investigated. The results show that the related strengths of [FeII] 4570 Å are positively correlated with infrared colors in the 1–5 µm region, but negatively correlated with infrared colors in the 12–22 µm region; the related strength of [OIII] 5007 Å are negatively correlated with infrared colors in the 1–5 µm region, but positively correlated with infrared colors in the 12–22 µm region; the related strength of [NII]6583 Å are also negatively correlated with infrared colors in the 1–5 µm region, but positively correlated with infrared colors in the 12–22 µm region. Therefore it is indicated that the behavior of [FeII] 4570 Å is just opposed to that for [OIII] 5007 Å and [NII] 6583 Å This result may be caused by different origins of such lines.  相似文献

We collected almost all Galactic Wolf-Rayet (hereafter WR) stars found so far from the literature. 578 WR stars are gathered in this paper. 2MASS counterparts with good quality magnitudes in all JHK bands are listed for 364 WR stars. In addition, WISE counterparts for these sources are also identified. It is found that free-free emission is the main dominant source for the infrared excess in most WR stars up to 3.4 μm. However at the longer wavelengths the thermal radiation is dominant. In addition, WR stars in Clusters of the Galactic center region have the strong infrared excess in the near infrared due to the dust thermal emission from the strong star forming activity in the Galactic center region. For some WR stars with the WC spectral type, in particular, with WCd type, the dust thermal emission is important radiation source while many WR stars with the WC spectral type have the near infrared flux enhancement from the broad line emission in the K band. It is also shown that many single WC stars with different spectral sub-types have different locations in the near infrared two-color diagram, in particular, WC6 and WC9d stars can be separated respectively from other spectral type stars while single WN stars with different spectral sub-types can not be separated in the near infrared two-color diagram.  相似文献

Vertical distributions and spectral characteristics of Titan’s photochemical aerosol and stratospheric ices are determined between 20 and 560 cm?1 (500–18 μm) from the Cassini Composite Infrared Spectrometer (CIRS). Results are obtained for latitudes of 15°N, 15°S, and 58°S, where accurate temperature profiles can be independently determined. In addition, estimates of aerosol and ice abundances at 62°N relative to those at 15°S are derived. Aerosol abundances are comparable at the two latitudes, but stratospheric ices are ~3 times more abundant at 62°N than at 15°S. Generally, nitrile ice clouds (probably HCN and HC3N), as inferred from a composite emission feature at ~160 cm?1, appear to be located over a narrow altitude range in the stratosphere centered at ~90 km. Although most abundant at high northern latitudes, these nitrile ice clouds extend down through low latitudes and into mid southern latitudes, at least as far as 58°S.There is some evidence of a second ice cloud layer at ~60 km altitude at 58°S associated with an emission feature at ~80 cm?1. We speculate that the identify of this cloud may be due to C2H6 ice, which in the vapor phase is the most abundant hydrocarbon (next to CH4) in the stratosphere of Titan.Unlike the highly restricted range of altitudes (50–100 km) associated with organic condensate clouds, Titan’s photochemical aerosol appears to be well-mixed from the surface to the top of the stratosphere near an altitude of 300 km, and the spectral shape does not appear to change between 15°N and 58°S latitude. The ratio of aerosol-to-gas scale heights range from 1.3–2.4 at about 160 km to 1.1–1.4 at 300 km, although there is considerable variability with latitude. The aerosol exhibits a very broad emission feature peaking at ~140 cm?1. Due to its extreme breadth and low wavenumber, we speculate that this feature may be caused by low-energy vibrations of two-dimensional lattice structures of large molecules. Examples of such molecules include polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrogenated aromatics. Finally, volume extinction coefficients NχE derived from 15°S CIRS data at a wavelength of λ = 62.5 μm are compared with those derived from the 10°S Huygens Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR) data at 1.583 μm. This comparison yields volume extinction coefficient ratios NχE(1.583 μm)/NχE(62.5 μm) of roughly 70 and 20, respectively, for Titan’s aerosol and stratospheric ices. The inferred particle cross-section ratios χE(1.583 μm)/χE(62.5 μm) appear to be consistent with sub-micron size aerosol particles, and effective radii of only a few microns for stratospheric ice cloud particles.  相似文献

Infrared observations of the unique symbiotic system CH Cyg in 2003–2006 are presented. Analysis of the observations has shown that a fairly dense dust structure (a cloud or a shell) appeared on the line of sight in August–November 2006. The dust grains in the new shell are similar in optical properties to graphite ones and their sizes are mostly within the range 0.14–0.16 μm. The dust shell is optically thick and its optical depth at 2.2 μm is τ(2.2) ≈ 0.97. The dust shell mass is M d(06) ≈ 8 × 10−6 M and the rate of matter flow into the shell has reached ∼2 × 10−5 M yr−1. Original Russian Text ? O.G. Taranova, V.I. CCD BVI Johnson–Cousins photometry of the open cluster candidates Pismis 23 and BH 222 is presented. Both the analysis of the colour-magnitude diagrams and star counts performed in the regions of these two objects support their physical reality. For Pismis 23 we derive E(B?V) = 2.0 ± 0.1, E(V?I) = 2.6 ± 0.1, a distance from the Sun d= (2.6 ± 0.6) kpc and an age of (300 ± 100) Myr, while for BH 222 we obtain E(V?I) = 2. 4 ± 0.2, d= (6.0 ± 2.7) kpc and (60 ± 30) Myr. Both objects, located beyond the Sagittarius arm, are among the most reddened and distant open clusters known in the direction towards the Galactic centre.  相似文献

Based on the Gaia DR1 TGAS parallaxes and photometry from the Tycho-2, Gaia, 2MASS, andWISE catalogues, we have produced a sample of ~100 000 clump red giants within ~800 pc of the Sun. The systematic variations of the mode of their absolute magnitude as a function of the distance, magnitude, and other parameters have been analyzed. We show that these variations reach 0.7 mag and cannot be explained by variations in the interstellar extinction or intrinsic properties of stars and by selection. The only explanation seems to be a systematic error of the Gaia DR1 TGAS parallax dependent on the square of the observed distance in kpc: 0.18R 2 mas. Allowance for this error reduces significantly the systematic dependences of the absolute magnitude mode on all parameters. This error reaches 0.1 mas within 800 pc of the Sun and allows an upper limit for the accuracy of the TGAS parallaxes to be estimated as 0.2 mas. A careful allowance for such errors is needed to use clump red giants as “standard candles.” This eliminates all discrepancies between the theoretical and empirical estimates of the characteristics of these stars and allows us to obtain the first estimates of the modes of their absolute magnitudes from the Gaia parallaxes: mode(M H ) = ?1.49 m ± 0.04 m , mode(M Ks ) = ?1.63 m ± 0.03 m , mode(M W1) = ?1.67 m ± 0.05 m mode(M W2) = ?1.67 m ± 0.05 m , mode(M W3) = ?1.66 m ± 0.02 m , mode(M W4) = ?1.73 m ± 0.03 m , as well as the corresponding estimates of their de-reddened colors.  相似文献

Automated search for star clusters in J, H, K s data from 2MASS catalog has been performed using the method developed by Koposov et al. (2008). We have found and verified 153 new clusters in the interval of the galactic latitude −24° < b < 24°. Color excesses E(BV), distance moduli and ages were determined for 130 new and 14 yet-unstudied known clusters. In this paper, we publish a catalog of coordinates, diameters, and main parameters of all the clusters under study. A special web-site available at has been developed to facilitate dissemination and scientific usage of the results.  相似文献

Disk scans of Saturn at 10 and 20 μm were obtained when the Saturnicentric solar declination (B′) was ?11°.8. The scans show little change from scans obtained when B′ was ?16°.3, and this could result from the long radiative time constant of the Saturnian atmosphere. The observations at 20 μm, in the H2 continuum, show positively that the temperature inversion at the south pole has a higher temperature than at any other point on the disk. In addition, the 12.1- and 20-μm scans indicate that the temperature of the inversion region is higher at the equator compared to the temperate zone. The data also suggest that enhanced 20-μm emission is correlated with the strength of the ultraviolet absorption.  相似文献

The masses of 68 supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in nearby (z < 0.15) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected by the INTEGRAL observatory in the hard X-ray energy band (17?C60 keV) outside the Galactic plane (|b| 5°) have been estimated. Well-known relations between the SMBHmass and (1) the infrared luminosity of the stellar bulge (from 2MASS data) and (2) the characteristics of broad emission lines (from RTT-150 data) have been used. A comparison with the more accurate SMBH mass estimates obtained by the reverberation-mapping technique and from direct dynamical measurements is also made for several objects. The SMBH masses derived from the correlation with the bulge luminosity turn out to be systematically higher than the estimates made by other methods. The ratio of the bolometric luminosity to the critical Eddington luminosity has been found for all AGNs. It ranges from 1 to 100% for the overwhelming majority of objects.  相似文献
