This report investigates the suggestion that the pattern of plasma convection in the polar cleft region is directly determined by the interplanetary electric field (IEF). Owing to the geometrical properties of the magnetosphere, the East-West component of the IEF will drive field-aligned currents which connect to the ionosphere at points lying on either side of noon, while currents associated with the North-South component of the IEF will connect the two polar caps as sheet currents centered at noon. The effects of the hypothesized IEF driven cleft current systems on polar cap ionospheric plasma convection are investigated through a series of numerical simulations. The simulations demonstrate that this simple electrodynamic model can account for the narrow “throats” of strong dayside antisunward convection observed during periods of southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) as well as the sunward convection observed during periods of strongly northward IMF. Thedawn-dusk shift of polar cap convection which is related to the By component of the IMF is also accounted for by the model.  相似文献

A noticeable depression of the vertical component Z of the geomagnetic field is observed in the polar cap in summer. From the statistical analysis of the equivalent overhead current patterns for daily geomagnetic variations in the summer and winter polar regions for three different conditions of IMF (interplanetary magnetic field), it was concluded that the annual variation of geomagnetic Z in the vicinity of the geomagnetic pole is attributed to the relative spatial shift of the twin-vortex current patterns over the polar cap from summer to winter. In winterthe clockwise current vortex in the dawn sector extends almost over the entire polar cap (except for the periods when the Bz component of IMF has a large positive value), and this will result in the positive variation of the Z-value at the geomagnetic pole. In summer the counter-clockwise current vortex in the dusk sector always extends over the whole polar cap even when Bz of IMF is positiveso that the variation of Z becomes negative. The persistent existence of current vortex in the dawn sector is important for the further study of magnetospheric convection when Bz is positive.  相似文献

Unusually great fluctuations in the ΔB module of the geomagnetic field have been observed in the polar cap from the satellite Cosmos-321. They are explained by small-scale two-sheet field-aligned current systems which exist during the periods when magnetic fields having a considerable northward Bz(Bz 10 nT) component are observed in interplanetary space.  相似文献

Equivalent ionospheric current systems representing IMF sector effects on the geomagnetic field in high latitudes are examined for each of the twelve calendar months by spherical harmonic analyses of geomagnetic hourly data at 13 northern polar stations for seven years. The main feature of obtained equivalent current systems includes circular currents at about 80° invariant latitude mostly in the daytime in summer and reversed circular currents at about 70° invariant latitude mainly at night in winter. Field-aligned current distributions responsible for equivalent currents, as well as vector distributions of electric fields and ionospheric currents, are approximated numerically from current functions of equivalent current systems by taking assumed distributions of the ionospheric conductivity. Two sets of upward and downward field-aligned current pairs in the auroral region, and also a field-aligned current region near the pole show seasonal variations. Also, ionospheric electric-field propagation along geomagnetic field lines from the summer hemisphere to the winter hemisphere with auroral Hall-conductivity effects may provide an explanation for the winter reversal of sector effects.  相似文献

After reviewing the basic characteristics of the polar cap arcs, it is suggested that their appearance can be explained if the open region splits into two, one located in the dawn sector and the other in the dusk sector. It is suggested that a distinct splitting occurs temporarily when an IMF tangential discontinuity passes by the magnetosphere and the sign of the IMF By component changes at the discontinuity, provided that the IMF Bz component is positive on both sides. As a result, the dawn or the dusk side of the polar region will be connected to either the front side or the hind side of the discontinuity, depending on the sign of the By component across the discontinuity. As the dynamo process is expected to operate in each of the two open regions (as is the case in the single open region), it is reasonable to infer that a sheet of plasma and of field-aligned currents forms in the region between the two open regions, resulting in the polar cap arcs across the polar region. The four-cell convection pattern may also appear. A model of the magnetosphere is constructed to demonstrate such a possibility.  相似文献

The effects of E-region electric fields on F-region parameters like height of constant electron density contours (hN) and semi-thickness, at an equatorial station, Trivandrum, are investigated. The E-region east-west electric field (Ey) has been deduced using the horizontal magnetic field values from the ground magnetograms. It is found that the semi-thickness parameter and hN follow closely the E-region electric field (Ey) variations in the forenoon and noon periods. In the afternoon, it is shown that there is close association between hN and Ey, when the electric field variations are large. On a day-to-day basis also, hN and the E-region electric field show very good correlation in the forenoon and noon hours. It is also shown that higher levels are affected more than the lower levels in the F-region by Ey.  相似文献

In this paper we give, for the case where the proper motions of stars are unknown, a method of calculating the correct relative proper motion, the linear model being assumed always. We also show that the proper motion usually found on assuming Σxμx = Σyμx = 0, Σxμy = Σyy = 0, Σμx = 0, Σμy = 0, is not the relative proper motion, and that the difference between the two depends on the positions of the reference stars on the plate.  相似文献

It is suggested that the quiet day daily magnetic variation in the polar cap region, Sqp, results partly from the short-circuit effect of the magnetotail current by the polar ionosphere. This implies that there is an inward field-aligned current from the dawnside magnetopause to the forenoon sector of the auroral oval (positively charged) and an outward field-aligned current to the duskside magnetopause from the afternoon sector of the oval (negatively charged), together with the ionospheric (Pedersen and Hall) currents. The distribution of the magnetic field vectors of both combined current systems agrees with the observed Sqpvector distribution. The space charges provide an electric field distribution which is similar to that which has been observed by polar orbiting satellites.  相似文献

A simple model current sheet is studied numerically. Consistent fields and particle trajectories, and their dependence on electron and proton temperature, convection velocity and normal field, Bz, linking through the current sheet, are presented and discussed. It is shown that the protons, which are the major current carriers, largely retain the decoupling of the motion in the x-y plane from the normal oscillations as in the ‘cold’ current sheet. The positive potential of the current sheet is shown to be sufficient to trap some energetic electrons, the motion of which enables the predominance of energetic electrons towards the dawn side of the tail to be understood. Semi-empirical relationships for the thickness and the potential of the current sheet are obtained.

The consequences of such a current sheet on the behaviour of the geomagnetic tail are investigated. Using Faraday's law and the consistent cross tail electric field it is shown that the effect of a southward turning of the interplanetary field is to lead to a decrease in Bz,an increase of the current sheet conductivity, and a growth of stored field energy, i.e. the current sheet blocks merging. The decrease of the resistance of the current sheet is limited by the finite width of the tail. Finally, it is pointed out that if the conditions which bring about the growth of field energy persist, then the collapse of the field lines characteristic of substorms may occur.  相似文献

Global auroral imagery obtained by DMSP satellites during the years 1972–1979 over both the northern and southern high latitude polar regions were examined to study the morphology of the discrete arcs known as polar cap arcs. Based upon their morphology, the polar cap arcs can be generally classified into three types viz. (1) the distinctly sun-aligned polar cap arcs—Type 1 arcs, (2) the morning/evening polar cap arcs expanded from the auroral oval—Type 2 arcs and (3) the hook shaped arcs connecting the polar cap arc with the oval arc (including the hitherto unreported oppositely oriented hook shaped arcs)—Type 3 arcs. Concurrent auroral electrojet indices (AE) and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) data were used to study the occurrence of the polar cap arcs. It was found that Type 1 arcs were observed mostly during low geomagnetic activity conditions, bright Type 2 arcs during the recovery phase of the substorms and Type 3 arcs do not occur during the recovery phase of the substorm. Over both hemispheres, the polar cap arcs were observed mostly during northward IMF. Furthermore, Type 1 arcs were obeserved over the northern polar cap during mostly negative Bx periods and over the southern polar cap during mostly positive Bx periods. The latter observation suggests that these types of arcs may be non-conjugate.  相似文献

The dependence of geomagnetic activity during a recurrent magnetic storm on the solar-wind magnetic field and plasma parameters has been studied. According to variations of solar-wind magnetic field strength B, a recurrent magnetic storm is divided into two stages: the first proceeding during the peak of B, and the second proceeding after the return of B to quiet level. The Kp index vs solar-wind parameters scattering diagrams for stages I and II differ significantly. In particular, the random scattering for stage I is much larger than for stage II. It was found that for stage I the Kp index correlates with B, with the sign and value of northsouth field component Bz and with the magnitude ΔB of field fluctuations, the situation being similar to that during sporadic magnetic storms, though the scale of the event is smaller. For stage II, the Kp index does not correlate with B, but strongly correlates with ΔB and weaker—with Bz. So geomagnetic activity at stage II is supported mainly by solar-wind magnetic field fluctuations. The dependence of the Kp index on plasma parameters (concentration of protons n, bulk velocity v and temperature T) is weak for both stages.  相似文献

A well established correlation exists between the IMF By and the cusp field-aligned and horizontal currents (Wilhjelm et al., 1978). The northern and southern cusp currents may be parts of one large scale current system (D'Angelo, 1980) flowing mainly at the magnetopause and driven by the z-component of the solar wind electric field. Primdahl and Spangslev (1981) suggested that the large scale current system seems to shield out the IMF By from the interior of the magnetosphere. This paper proposes that the currents are induced by the change of sign of By at the IMF sector boundary crossings, and argues that the time constant for decay of the currents may well be one week or larger. The percentage errors in inferring the IMF sector polarity from the Godhavn H magnetogram increases with increasing time since the last sector boundary crossing. This is in accordance with a steady decay of the induced currents. Finally experimental tests are proposed to demonstrate the feasability of and possibly distinguish between the mechanisms.  相似文献

The time scale of the response of the high-latitude dayside ionospheric flow to changes in the North-South component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has been investigated by examining the time delays between corresponding sudden changes. Approximately 40 h of simultaneous IMF and ionospheric flow data have been examined, obtained by the AMPTE-UKS and -IRM spacecraft and the EISCAT “Polar” experiment, respectively, in which 20 corresponding sudden changes have been identified. Ten of these changes were associated with southward turnings of the IMF, and 10 with northward turnings. It has been found that the corresponding flow changes occurred simultaneously over the whole of the “Polar” field-of-view, extending more than 2° in invariant latitude, and that the ionospheric response delay following northward turnings is the same as that following southward turnings, though the form of the response is different in the two cases. The shortest response time, 5.5 ± 3.2 min, is found in the early- to mid-afternoon sector, increasing to 9.5 ± 3.0 min in the mid-morning sector, and to 9.5 ± 3.1 min near to dusk. These times represent the delays in the appearance of perturbed flows in the “Polar” field-of-view following the arrival of IMF changes at the subsolar magnetopause. Overall, the results agree very well with those derived by Etemadi et al. (1988, Planet. Space Sci. 36, 471) from a general cross-correlation analysis of the IMF Bz and “Polar” beam-swinging vector flow data.  相似文献

The effect of an electric field induced by a rapidly decaying ring current on the motion of charged particles in the magnetosphere has been investigated using Euler potentials. For a model consisting of the earth dipole and the symmetric ring current, the electric field satisfies the condition E . B = 0.

Under this circumstance, the E × B drift of the particle can be identified as the motion of the magnetic field lines and vice versa. The time dependent electric field induced can be evaluated in a Spherical polar coordinate system by the formula

where and β are Euler potentials.

A model calculation on the particle drift velocity vD = E × B/B2 shows that the radial component of the drift velocity is in good agreement with those deduced from whistler duct studies.  相似文献

The polar cap magnetic activity MAGPC-index characterizing the intensity of disturbances affected by the IMF vertical component was derived from the antarctic station Vostok data in accordance to method of Troshichev et al. (1979a). The paper examines the statistical relationship between the 15-min values of this index and interplanetary quantities such as IMF components, solar wind velocity, interplanetary electric field and others. The results of the computation show a good correlation of MAGPC indices with interplanetary quantities including the IMF southward component. The best correlation is obtained for the merging electric field. The conclusion is : the MAGPC index derived from the background magnetic data may be used for monitoring of the convection electric field in the polar cap.  相似文献

On the basis of the experimental data on the ionospheric conductivities and field-aligned currents the electric fields and currents in the ionosphere generated by the field-aligned currents were computated for various magnetic activity conditions. The model of the ionospheric conductivities by Vanyan and Osipova (1975) was used taking into account the influence of the universal time seasons and magnetic activity. The field-aligned current patterns and their change with magnetic activity was set on the basis of the TRIAD data. It is shown that the calculated patterns of the ionospheric electric fields and currents are in agreement with the measured electric fields and the equivalent current systems of the magnetic disturbances in high latitudes. The conclusion is made that the magnetospheric field-aligned currents are the main sources of the presently known polar magnetic disturbances.  相似文献

We discuss the data of trignometric parallaxes determined along and δ published by the US Naval Observatory and Van Vleck Observatory. We found that the absolute difference δπ = πxπy shows a very similar periodic variation with for both observations. This variation is shown to be due to errors in πy and to be related to the current practice of maximising the parallax factor for parallax determination in right ascension. Therefore, if possible, we should increase observations where the parallax factor in declination is maximised.  相似文献

Correlation of cosmic-ray intensity (I) with the solar magnetic field expanded into the spherical surface harmonics, Bns(n 9), by Hoeksema and Scherrer has been studied using the following regression equation:
, where are subgroups of Bns classified in ascending order of n, and τi is the time lag of I behind correlation coefficient between the observed and simulated intensities (Iobs, Isml) in the period 1976–1985 is 0.87 and considerably better than that derived from any single index of solar activity. The lag time τ3 is greater than others, indicating that the higher order magnetic disturbances effective to the cosmic-ray modulation have a longer lifetime in space than the lower order disturbances. The rigidity spectrum of the cosmic-ray intensity variation responsible for AI due to the dipole moment is harder than those for others (A2,A3), indicating that the lowest order (i.e. largest scale) magnetic disturbances can modulate cosmic rays more effectively than the higher order disturbances. As another result of the present analysis, it has been found that the intensity depends also on the polarity of the polar magnetic field of the Sun; the residual (IobsIsml) of the simulation changes its sign from positive to negative with a time lag (0–5 Carrington rotation periods) behind the directional change of the solar magnetic dipole moment from northward to southward, and has a softer rigidity spectrum than AiS. The dependence is consistent with the result having been obtained in the previous period, 1936–1976, by one (K.N.) of the present authors. The polarity dependence can be found also in the 22-year variation of the time lags obtained every solar cycle in the period 1936–1985. The theoretical interpretation of these polarity dependences is discussed on the basis of the diffusion-convection-drift model.  相似文献

Photometric observations of dayside auroras are compared with simultaneous measurements of geomagnetic disturbances from meridian chains of stations on the dayside and on the nightside to document the dynamics of dayside auroras in relation to local and global disturbances. These observations are related to measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) from the satellites ISEE-1 and 3. It is shown that the dayside auroral zone shifts equatorward and poleward with the growth and decay of the circum-oval/polar cap geomagnetic disturbance and with negative and positive changes in the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field (Bz). The geomagnetic disturbance associated with the auroral shift is identified as the DP2 mode. In the post-noon sector the horizontal disturbance vector of the geomagnetic field changes from southward to northward with decreasing latitude, thereby changing sign near the center of the oval precipitation region. Discrete auroral forms are observed close to or equatorward of the ΔH = 0 line which separates positive and negative H-component deflections. This reversal moves in latitude with the aurora and it probably reflects a transition of the electric field direction at the polar cap boundary. Thus, the discrete auroral forms observed on the dayside are in the region of sunward-convecting field lines. A model is proposed to explain the equatorward and poleward movement of the dayside oval in terms of a dayside current system which is intensified by a southward movement of the IMF vector. According to this model, the Pedersen component of the ionospheric current is connected with the magnetopause boundary layer via field-aligned current (FAC) sheets. Enhanced current intensity, corresponding to southward auroral shift, is consistent with increased energy extraction from the solar wind. In this way the observed association of DP2 current system variations and auroral oval expansion/contraction is explained as an effect of a global, ‘direct’ response of the electromagnetic state of the magnetosphere due to the influence of the solar wind magnetic field. Estimates of electric field, current, and the rate of Joule heat dissipation in the polar cap ionosphere are obtained from the model.  相似文献
