Mud bank formation during the southwest monsoon along the southwest coast of India remains an enigma to the researchers and coastal community in spite of several earlier studies. The present study attempts to unravel the mystery through a high-frequency, season-long time-series observation at Alappuzha, located at the southern part of the west coast of India, a region of frequent occurrence of mud bank. Using 7-month-long weekly time-series observation, we identified strong winds and high waves associated with onset of the southwest monsoon and subsequent three episodic atmospheric low-pressure events (LPEs).With the help of in situ time-series data, we show that the strong winds and high waves associated with southwest monsoon pre-conditions the near shore bottom sediment to bring it into suspension. The high amplitude waves associated with the southwest monsoon, while propagating from the deep water to shallow water region, interact with the bottom initiating bottom-sediment movement and its suspension due to wave refraction and shoaling. The sporadic occurrence of the atmospheric LPEs enhances the process of suspension of bottom sediment in the near shore region leading to the formation of fluid mud. Simulations with a cohesive sediment transport model yielded realistic estimates of sediment transport, in the presence of an onshore current, a pre-requisite for transporting the fluid mud toward the coast. The prevailing onshore upwelling current during the southwest monsoon provides the favorable pre-requisite conditions for transporting the fluid mud through depression channel network towards the coast. Once sufficient quantity and thickness of fluid mud is accumulated in the near shore region, it acts as a wave damper for subsequent high monsoon waves, as indicated by the time-series wave data, leading to the formation of tranquil mud bank region. Depression channel networks extending from the shelf to the coast off Alappuzha, Kochi, Ponnani, Beypore, and Ullal were found in the bathymetric charts, thus explaining why mud banks occur only at few locations in spite of the prevalence of similar monsoon conditions.  相似文献

色谱和色谱/质谱分析表明,济州鸟西南泥质区正构烷烃、姥鲛烷、植烷、藿烷和甾烷等生物标志物的特征与现代长江口、老黄河口和新黄河口的河流沉积物均区别很大,该泥质区的沉积有机质主要来源于海洋低等生物(如细菌和藻类等)以及陆源高等植物的输入,表现为不同来源和成熟度的生物标志物的混合,同时该泥质区沉积有机质与矿物碎屑沉积物来源不尽相同。长江口泥质区正构烷烃高相对分子质量部分与长江口沉积物相似,正构烷烃和藿烷所反映的有机质成熟度高于现代长江和老黄河口沉积物,甾烷的成熟度与长江相仿而明显高于老黄河口沉积物。长江口泥质区的沉积有机质主要来源于长江输入的陆源高等植物碎片和海洋源的低等生物。东海陆架近岸与远端泥质区沉积有机质的物源很不相同。  相似文献

六十年代初国外有人开始用确定型的数学模拟方法来模拟沉积盆地的形成和演化。L.L.Sloss(1962)提出了一种沉积盆地的概念模型,J.W.Harbaugh等(1970)详细地讨论了这种模型,并编制了计算机程序。这种模型适用于由流经海岸平原的河流携带到海边的大陆架上的碎屑沉积物的沉积作用。本文利用这种沉积模式,对我国黄骅拗陷南部一个约1000平方公里的膏盐湖沉积盆地进行了数学模拟,并取得了一些初步成果。  相似文献

浙闽泥质区是全新世高海平面以来沉积物的汇。受东亚季风影响,浙闽沿岸流和台湾暖流具有季节性变化,长江口"夏储冬输"的沉积物输运模式对东海内陆架泥质区的形成有关键作用。浙闽泥质区的潜在物源主要有长江、浙闽河流以及台湾西部山地河流,以长江物质为主。黏土矿物、稀土元素、Sr-Nd同位素、环境磁学等方法是物源研究的重要手段。长江物质以伊利石为主,蒙脱石含量较少,高岭石和绿泥石含量中等;而台湾物质以伊利石和绿泥石为主,没有蒙脱石。磁黄铁矿是台湾河流沉积物特有的磁性矿物,可作为大陆河流与台湾河流物源识别的指标。泥质区位于东亚季风区,受低纬热带过程和高纬大气环流的影响,气候变化具有波动性。沉积物敏感粒级反演的东亚冬季风(EAWM)只记录了泥质区形成以来的气候变化,不能代表整个全新世。受台湾暖流和浙闽沿岸流的双重影响,敏感粒级作为EAWM演化的指标需进一步深入研究。  相似文献

Surface sediments from the Jizan shelf, southern Red Sea, were analysed for grain size and mineralogical and elemental composition in order to establish their geochemical characteristics. Texturally, sediments are classified into sand and mud; the latter dominates the shelf. Grain size variability and mineralogical assemblages present in the sediments largely control the abundance and distribution of CaCO3, organic carbon content (OC) and the major and trace elements. Sand sediments are composed of carbonate material of marine origin and contain high concentrations of Ca, Mg and Sr. Mud sediments are relatively rich in OC and are characterised by high concentrations of Al, Fe, Ti, Mn, Cu, Cr, Co, Ni, V and Ba. Unlike the sand, Mg concentration in the mud sediments seems to be controlled by stronger contribution from non-carbonate material. Factor analysis is applied to identify the variables accounting for most of the variance in the mud sediment samples. Three factors are found to describe about 78% of the variance. The first factor which accounts for 41% of the total variance is the Fe and Mn oxides that reach the area through episodic flooding. The second and third factors are the mud (22%) and the mineralogy (15%) of the sediments, respectively.  相似文献

In the Aare River Valley between Berne and Thoune a mud till unit occurs together with lacustrine sediments in a complex relationship. The high content of fine material in the mud till is due to incorporation of lake sediments by the advancing Aare glacier probably during the most extensive glaciation of the Swiss Alps. Special attention is given to the evolution of the grain size parameters in vertical sequences in sections at Raintalwald and Räbli. The trend of vertical variation of the parameters reflects the origin of the mud till. Ground moraine and mud till may both be lodgement till but are texturally quite distinct, and the incorporation of pre-existing sediments in the mud till is clearly demonstrated by the use of the grain size parameters.  相似文献

对近2 ka以来闽浙沿岸泥质沉积物进行了粘土矿物和元素测试,粘土矿物对比分析表明,所研究的泥质沉积物来源为长江沉积物.金属元素聚类分析以及使用判别函数,均得到了与上述一致的结果.沉积物物源的定量计算表明,近2 ka以来闽浙沿岸泥质沉积物中长江的贡献基本稳定在83%~85%,可以排除有黄河沉积物输入的可能,且历史上黄河的改道与北徙并没有对本区的沉积环境和沉积物来源产生明显的影响.  相似文献

Fine-grained sediment deposition is often conceived to happen in still water conditions and to represent slow sedimentation rates. However, it has been increasingly noted that mud sedimentation commonly occurs under high-energy conditions. The macrotidal Petitcodiac River estuary is used as an example to investigate the significance of flocculation as an important process in the rapid removal of large amounts of sediments from suspension under turbulent flow conditions. A range of physical sedimentary structures was observed at the Petitcodiac River estuary intertidal flats and bars, including low-angle and horizontal planar lamination, current and climbing ripples, surficial fluid mud, soft-sediment deformation, microfaults, and mud rip-up clasts. Fluid mud within the study area contains considerable proportions of clay (21–67%) and contributes to the formation of creeping fluid-mud sheets and streams. Detailed examination of the naturally occurring clay flocs shows that they contain up to 77% of the entangled silt- and sand-sized grains. SEM and microscopic imaging of fluid mud reveal a substantial amount of bioclastic material within the flocs and dispersed among the sediments. These observations show that physicochemical and biological processes influence silt, plankton, and clay aggregation. Water samples and observations from the Petitcodiac River estuary confirm that flocs form in the water column and then settle to the tidal-channel floor and flanking intertidal flats. Laboratory experiments, using Petitcodiac sediment, show how the clay flocs have the potential to sweep the water of silt-sized suspended grains. Additionally, diatoms and their associated extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) sheaths might play a role in mineral aggregation and increased sediment cohesiveness.  相似文献

The locations and information about the sizes of 61 mud volcanoes on the Italian mainland and Sicily, plus an area of mud diapirism in the Italian Adriatic Sea, are presented. Data about the emission products are also provided. The majority of these mud volcanoes are found where thick sedimentary sequences occur within a zone of tectonic compression associated with local plate tectonic activity: the movement of the Adriatic microplate between the converging African and Eurasian plates. The principal gas emitted by these mud volcanoes is methane, which probably originates from deep within the sediments. Other mud volcanoes, associated with igneous volcanism, produce mainly carbon dioxide. The mud diapirs in the Adriatic Sea are thought to form as a result of the mobilization of shallow gassy sediments. 随着长江入海泥沙减少,长江三角洲响应问题越来越受到关注。本文选取对水动力变化较为敏感的水下三角洲与陆架过渡区域,通过对钻孔沉积物进行210Pb 和137Cs同位素定年和粒度参数分析,并提取敏感粒级含量及平均粒径垂向变化,尝试探讨其对近百年来长江河口河势变化以及入海泥沙减少的响应。研究发现1954年之前,该区沉积物颗粒较细,粒度参数特征接近现代河口泥质区沉积物,敏感粒径特征反映出河流作用影响较强,说明当时处于泥质区沉积范围;之后沉积物明显粗化,参数特征向陆架残留砂过渡,海洋动力的影响明显增强,并带入陆架粗颗粒物质,说明当时泥质区南移,该区处于河口和陆架沉积过渡区。推测这一变化主要和1954年后长江口北支河道萎缩有关,该区从长江水沙覆盖范围内变为水沙向海输运的边界上,海洋动力对沉积物改造加剧,导致沉积物粗化。同时,并未发现该区沉积物对1980年代后长江入海泥沙显著下降有所响应。近期发现的长江口外泥-砂分界线的西移很可能也包含着河口河势变化而导致的沉积物粗化的贡献。  相似文献

A study took place during May 1998 and May 1999 to examine the processes controlling localized accumulation of fine-grained sediments in the lower Ashepoo River. This region, referred to as the Mud Reach, is an area of muddy bottom sediments bounded by fine sands. The Mud Reach is located downstream of the landward extent of the salt intrusion where an estuarine turbidity maximum commonly occurs. Tidal time-series measurements made in the Mud Reach during May 1998, when river discharge was at a 10-yr high, showed high concentrations of suspended sediment (0.05–1 g I−1) during maximum tidal current velocity with concentrations in the bottom 30 cm exceeding 70 g I−1 (fluid mud). A correlation between salinity stratification and increased suspended sediment concentration suggests that inhibited vertical mixing enhances the settling of flocculated sediments to the bed. Measurements made during May 1999 show a two-order-of-magnitude decrease in the concentration of near-bed sediments. A decrease in river discharge during the 1999 observation period of more than 100 m3 s−1 suggests that changes in the hydrography and in the supply of sediments to the system both may be important factors in the trapping of fine-grained sediments in the region. The source of sediments is likely from muddy deposits in the Fenwick Cut, a man-made section of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway about 2 km north of the Mud Reach that connects the Ashepoo and Edisto Rivers. The Fenwick Cut appears to be an effective area for trapping sediments where shoaling has increased by 130% in the last decade. Current measurements show that flow velocities decrease through the Cut, likely allowing for the settling of suspended particles that form the thick deposits of unconsolidated mud observed during both years.  相似文献

利用东海陆架泥质沉积区和周围砂质沉积区的表层沉积物元素含量和海水悬浮沉积物总量分析资料,对泥质区的沉积地球化学进行了比较研究。结果表明东海不同泥质区的沉积地球化学过程很不相同。浙江近岸泥质区沉积物元素以Fe、Mn、Zn的含量高,Na、Sr、Al、Ca的含量低为特征,其地球化学特征与长江沉积物非常一致。近岸泥质区的沉积物基本来源于长江输入海的沉积物,在台湾暖流的作用下沉积在浙江沿岸。远岸济州岛西南泥质区沉积物以Na、Sr的高含量,较高的Al、Ca含量和低的Fe、Mn、Zn含量为特征,其地球化学特征与黄河源沉积物有好的相关性,但有一定的混合源性质,该泥质区的沉积物主要来源于黄河源的细颗粒沉积物,由黄海沿岸流搬运到该区并沉积下来。沉积物在搬运沉积过程中,元素粒度分异作用明显。东海陆架泥质区沉积地球化学过程的控制性影响因子是东海环流系统和物源,其中台湾暖流对东海陆架远岸和近岸泥质区的沉积地球化学分区具有关键作用。  相似文献

Mass transport deposits, up to 3·9 m thick, have been identified from piston cores collected from canyon floors and inter-canyon ridges on the central Scotian Slope. These deposits are characterized by four distinct mass-transport facies – folded mud, dipping stratified mud, various types of mud-clast conglomerate, and diamicton. Commonly, the folded and stratified mud facies are overlain by mud-clast conglomerate, followed by diamicton and then by turbidity current deposits of well-sorted sand. Stratified and folded mud facies were sourced from canyon walls. Overconsolidation in clasts in some mud-clast conglomerates indicates that the source sediment was buried 12–33 m, much deeper than the present cored depth, implying a source in canyon heads and canyon walls. The known stratigraphic framework for the region and new radiocarbon dating suggests that there were four or five episodes of sediment failure within the past 17 ka, most of which are found in more than one canyon system. The most likely mechanism for triggering occasional, synchronous failures in separate canyons is seismic ground shaking. The facies sequence is interpreted as resulting from local slides being overlain by mud-clast conglomerate deposits derived from failures farther upslope and finally by coarser-grained deposits resulting from retrogressive failure re-mobilizing upper slope sediments to form debrisflows and turbidity currents.  相似文献

The Tortonian–Calabrian strata of Offshore Makran(Pakistan) is investigated for the purpose of reservoir assessment. The stratigraphy and petrophysics indicate that the Neogene sediments have tight reservoir potential with porosities in the range of 3%–9% and 40%–50% water saturation. The Jurassic volcano-sedimentary formation of the Dinarides is build up of diabases, spilites, cherts, argillaceous sediments, desmositic and spilositic rocks. Tuffs, however, are rare.The desmositic and associated spilositic rocks encircle volcanics, and build up zones several km wide and up to one km thick. Their characteristic mineral assemblege is albite-chloriteepidote-calcite, sericite and quartz. Farther away from the diabases/spilites the desmosites contain more frequent relicts of shales, and finally pass into shales. The desmositic rocks are characterized by structures formed by turbulent movements of unconsolidated mud.The desmositic and spilositic rocks were formed under the influence of injections of basic lavas in unconsilidated mud. The magmatic Na-rich hydrothermal solutions and the heated water from mud produced a recrystallization of the sediments and formation of albite.  相似文献

Anastomosing river plains of the Channel Country, central Australia, have aggraded slowly over the past 100 ka. Channel sediments accumulate mainly as accretionary benches of mud and sand, sandy channel-base sheets and vegetation-shadow deposits. The channels are laterally stable and the sediments have aggraded locally against erosional banks of tough floodplain muds. Channel sediments are profoundly affected by desiccation during dry periods and by bioturbation caused by within-channel trees and burrowing invertebrates, especially crayfish. Excavations show that mud-dominated channel bodies of low width:thickness ratio are generated by a combination of vertical and lateral accretion. Levees and braided surfaces, composed mainly of mud aggregates, border the channels and are activated during valley-wide floods which lay down distal mud sheets. Floodplain muds are converted to vertisols with gilgai, deep desiccation cracks, and impregnations of carbonate and gypsum. A fixed-channel facies model is applicable to the Channel Country river deposits. Anastomosis apparently results from the need for the system to move large volumes of water and moderate sediment loads across low-gradient interior basins.
Channels distant from upland source areas receive an abundant supply of pedogenic, sand-sized mud aggregates generated on adjacent floodplains and reworked into braid bars during valley-wide floods. Some quartz sand is provided from excavation of subsurface Pleistocene sands in deep channels and waterholes and from aeolian dunes on the floodplains. 四川省境内某泥石流沟为大渡河左岸的一级支流,活动明显,沟口公路和村庄都曾遭受其危害.采用单沟泥石流危险性评价方法,结合遥感图像解译及现场调查,对泥石流的形成条件、类型、危险性进行了分析.根据该沟泥石流发生的特点,对泥石流的工程效应进行了分析,发现该沟是低频的中等易发泥石流,对大渡河和上下水库的影响均不大.  相似文献

Integrated geological and geophysical investigation of bottom sediments in the Medvezhii Island region, southwestern margin of the Barents Sea, has made it possible to characterize sediments of diverse types related to the action of hydrocarbon fluids, hemipelagic sedimentation, slope phenomena, and combined influence of all these factors. Relatively homogeneous (in terms of mechanical composition) sediments are subdivided into several lithogenetic types based on the grain size distribution. Relationships of clay minerals, as well as their morphological and structural peculiarities, are described for each type. It is demonstrated that sediments formed under the substantial influence of hydrocarbon fluid fluxes are characterized by a high (relative to hemipelagic sediments) content of smectites and mixed-layer clay minerals of the illite–smectite series. It is assumed that these minerals are authigenic formations in mud volcanic rocks and diapir material. Based on the comparison of clay minerals contents primary source of the material for redeposited sediments has been reconstructed.  相似文献

大量的钻孔资料和地震剖面显示主动大陆边缘的增生楔和被动大陆边缘的俯冲-增生楔、断裂-褶皱系、底辟构造或泥火山、滑塌构造、海底扇、"麻坑"构造和陆地多年冻土区等多种地质构造背景是形成天然气水合物的有利场所,可形成构造圈闭型天然气水合物矿藏。这些地质构造背景一方面大多是深部热成因气、生物成因气或混合成因气体或流体向上运移到海底的通道,形成天然气水合物矿藏;另一方面也可能造成天然气水合物的温压环境改变,致使天然气水合物分解。海底滑塌亦可能是天然气水合物分解所致,是潜在的地质灾害。  相似文献
