Io's neutral sodium emission cloud was monitored during the period of Voyager 1 encounter from two independent ground-based sites. Observations from Table Mountain Observatory verified the continued existence of the “near-Io cloud” (d < 1.5 × 105 km, for 4πI > 1 kR; R denotes Rayleigh) while those from Wise Observatory showed a deficiency in the weaker emission at greater distances from Io. The sodium cloud has been monitored from both observatories for several years. These and other observations demonstrate that the behavior of the cloud is complex since it undergoes a variety of changes, both systematic and secular, which can have both time and spatial dependencies. The cloud also displays some characteristics of stability. Table Mountain images and high-dispersion spectra (resolution ~0.2 A?) indicate that the basic shape and intensity of the “near cloud” have remained relatively constant at least since imaging observations began in 1976. Wise Observatory low-dispersion spectra (resolution ~1 A?) which have been obtained since 1974 demonstrate substantial variability of the size and intensity of the “far cloud” (d ? 1.5 × 105 km) on a time scale of months or less. Corresponding changes in the state of the plasma associated with the Io torus are suggested, with the period of Voyager 1 encounter represented as a time of unusually high plasma temperature and/or density. Dynamic models of the sodium cloud employing Voyager 1 plasma data provide a reasonable fit to the Table Mountain encounter images. The modeling assumptions of anisotropic ejection of neutral sodium atoms from the leading, inner hemisphere of Io with a velocity distribution characteristic of sputtering adequately explain the overall intensity distribution of the “near cloud”. During the Voyager 1 encounter period there appeared a region of enhanced intensity projecting outward from Io's orbit and inclined to the orbital plane. This region is clearly distinguished from the sodium emission normally aligned with the plane of Io's orbit. The process responsible for this phenomenon is not yet understood. Similar but less pronounced features are also present in several Table Mountain images obtained over the past few years.  相似文献

Strong evidence that Io's sodium emission is due to resonant scattering is given by our observations which show a monotonic increase of emission intensity with residual solar intensity. In addition we detected no emission during three eclipse observations of Io. We propose a resonant scattering model with two spacial components comprising an optically thick atmosphere extending 103 km above Io's surface surrounded by an optically thin cloud which forms a partial torus around Jupiter. In this model a flux of 107 cm?2 sec?1 sodium atoms are sputtered from Io's surface by heavy energetic ions which are accelerated in a plasma sheath around Io. The atoms sputtered from the surface collide with atoms in Io's atmosphere so the equipartition of kinetic energy is established. The total sodium abundance is about 3 × 1013 cm?2. During Io's day, sodium and other atmospheric constituents are ionized, giving rise to the ionosphere observed by Pioneer 10. Atoms escape by means of Jeans escape from the critical level, which is at the top of the atmosphere and the base of the cloud. We have observed sodium emission 6arcsec (6 Io diameters) above and below Io's orbital plane and 23arcsec toward Jupiter in Io's orbital plane. No emission was detected at maximum elongation 180° from Io. We interpret these results to mean that atoms escaping from Io form a partial torus whose thickness is about 12 arcsec and whose length is at least one-fifth of Io's orbital circumference.  相似文献

Models are developed to describe the spatial distribution of gases emitted by Io and are applied to recent observations which indicate extensive gas clouds of hydrogen and sodium in orbit around Jupiter. Hydrogen and sodium atoms are emitted from Io with velocities in the range 2 to 3 km sec?1, with fluxes of about 1010 and 108cm?2sec?1 for hydrogen and sodium respectively. Hydrogen atoms may be formed by photodecomposition of gases such as NH3 or H2S released from the satellite surface and may escape thermally from an exosphere whose temperature is about 500 K. Sodium may be ejected from the surface by energetic particles or by ultraviolet radiation and it appears that a non-thermal mechanism drawing energy from Jupiter's magnetic field is required in order to account for its release to space.  相似文献

The dayside hydrogen exosphere was observed in October–November 1975 with a Lymanalpha photometer carried on board Venera-9 and 10. In addition to intensity measurements, the use of a hydrogen cell allowed for the first time linewidth measurements. Both intensity and linewidth measurements below 1500 km of altitude are well fitted by a single exospheric component (Tc = 500 ± 100 K, nc = 1.5 × 104 atom cm?3at 250 km). Above 3000 km, the measured linewidth increased sharply, to decrease again above 4500 km. This feature is interpreted as the signature of an additional population of “hot” atoms circulating on satellite orbits, created just behind the bow-shock by charge-exchange collisions (with an efficiency of 4%) between the neutral atoms and the solar wind protons, which became turbulent after bow-shock crossing. The density ratio of “hot” to standard population is of the order of 10% around 3500 km of altitude.  相似文献

We investigate the contribution of scattering in the telescope to our measurements of the size of Io's sodium cloud and to the distribution of emission intensity in the cloud. The brightest regions, within 30″ of Io near opposition and along the equatorial plane, are relatively undistorted but regions further than 45″ away and not close to the equatorial plane are very likely to consist of mainly scattered light. Portions of the cloud in the vicinity of the magnetic equator are also mostly scattered light when Io is near extreme magnetic latitude. The equatorial torus, however, extends up to 20 arcmin from Jupiter. The large size of the cloud is thus confirmed. High-resolution line profile shapes indicate that sodium streams from Io preferentially in the forward direction with velocities distributed up to 18 km sec?1. The observed wavelength shifts of the peak intensities from Io's rest frame are compatible with a cloud streaming through a bound atmospheric component but they could also be caused by a velocity distribution peaked at very low velocities.  相似文献

Taking into account meteoroid measurements by in situ experiments, zodiacal light observations, and oblique angle hypervelocity impact studies, it is found that the observed size distributions of lunar microcraters usually do not represent the interplanetary meteoroid flux for particles with masses ?10?10g. From the steepest observed lunar crater size distribution a “lunar flux” is derived which is up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than the interplanetary flux at the smallest particle masses. New models of the “lunar” and “interplanetary” meteoroid fluxes are presented. The spatial mass density of interplanetary meteoritic material at 1 AU is ~10?16g/m3. A large fraction of this mass is in particles of 10?6 to 10?4 g. A detailed analysis of the effects of mutual collisions (i.e., destruction of meteoroids and production of fragment particles) and of radiation pressure has been performed which yielded a new picture of the balance of the meteoritic complex. It has been found that the collisional lifetime at 1 AU is shortest (~104years) for meteoroids of 10?4 to 1 g mass. For particles with masses m > 10?5g, Poynting-Robertson lifetimes are considerably larger than collisional lifetimes. The collisional destruction rate of meteoroids with masses m ? 10?3g is about 10 times larger than the rate of collisional production of fragment particles in the same mass range. About 9 tons/sec of these “meteor-sized” (m > 10?5g) particles are lost inside 1 AU due to collisions and have to be replenished by other sources, e.g., comets. Under steady-state conditions, most of these large particles are “young”; i.e., they have not been fragmented by collisions and their initial orbits are not altered much by radiation pressure drag. Many more micrometeoroids of masses m ? 10?5g are generated by collisions from more massive particles than are destroyed by collisions. The net collisional production rate of intermediate-sized particles 10?10g ? m ? 10?5g is found to be about 16 times larger at 1 AU than the Poynting-Robertson loss rate. The total Poynting-Robertson loss rate inside 1 AU is only about 0.26 tons/sec. The smallest fragment particles (m ? 10?10g) will be largely injected into hyperbolic trajectories under the influence of radiation pressure (β meteoroids). These particles provide the most effecient loss mechanism from the meteoritic complex. When it is assumed that meteoroids fragment similarly to experimental impact studies with basalt, then it is found that interplanetary meteoroids in the mass range 10?10g ? m ? 10?5g cannot be in temporal balance under collisions and Poynting-Robertson drag but their spatial density is presently increasing with time.  相似文献

It is now recognized that a number of neutral-plasma interaction processes are of great importance in the formation of the Io torus. One effect not yet considered in detail is the charge exchange between fast torus ions and the atmospheric neutrals producing fast neutrals energetic enough to escape from Io. Since near Io the plasma flow is reduced, the neutrals of charge exchange origin are not energetic enough to leave the Jovian system; these neutrals are therefore distributed over an extensive region as indicated by the sodium cloud. It is estimated here that the total neutral injection rate can reach 1027 s?1 if not more. New ions subsequently created in the distributed neutral atomic cloud as a result of charge exchange or electron impact ionization are picked up by the corotating magnetic field. The pick-up ions are hot with initial gyration speed near the corotation speed. The radial current driven by the pickup process cannot close in the torus but must be connected to the planetary ionosphere by field-aligned currents. These field-aligned currents will flow away from the equator at the outer edge of the neutral cloud and towards it at the inner edge. We find that the Jovian ionospheric photoelectrons alone cannot supply the current flowing away from the equator, and torus ions accelerated by a parallel electric field could be involved. The parallel potential drop is estimated to be several kV which is large enough to push the torus ions into the Jovian atmosphere. This loss could explain the sharp discontinuous change of flux tube content and ion temperature at L = 5.6 as well as the generation of auroral type hiss there. Finally we show that the inner torus should be denser at system III longitudes near 240° as a result of the enhanced secondary electron flux in this region. This effect may be related to the longitudinal brightness variation observed in the SII optical emissions.  相似文献

The Pioneer 10 ultraviolet photometer observations of the Jovian hydrogen torus are analyzed to obtain the angular distribution. The cloud is asymmetric about Io, where the atoms presumably originate, with the greater density occurring in the trailing portion. A simple model which assumes Jeans escape from the atmosphere of Io is developed and compared to the observations. The results suggest that the exospheric temperature is high (~3000 K) and that the ionization lifetime of the cloud atoms is ~1 × 105 sec.  相似文献

The mechanical properties of elemental sulfur are such that the upper crust of Io cannot be primarily sulfur. For heat flows in the range 100–1000 ergs cm?2, sec?1, sulfur becomes ductile within several hundred meters of the surface and would prevent the formation of calderas with depths greater than this. However, the one caldera for which precise depth data are available is 2 km deep, and this value may be typical. A study of the mechanical equilibrium of simple slopes shows that the depth to the zone of rapid ductile flow strongly controls the maximum heights for sulfur slopes. Sulfur scarps with heights greater than 1 km will fail for all heat flows greater than 180 ergs cm?2 sec?1 and slope angles greater than 22.5°. The observed relief on Io is inconsistent with that anticipated for a predominantly sulfur crust. However, a silicate crust with several percent sulfur included satisfies both the mechanical constraints and the observed presence of sulfur on Io.  相似文献

Material from the Galilean satellites of Jupiter ejected by energetic particles in the Jovian magnetosphere may provide large sources of oxygen to the parent planet. Formation of a CO molecule is the ultimate fate of an oxygen atom in the upper Jovian atmosphere. This high altitude source of CO supports Beer and Taylor's (1978, Astrophys. J.221) observations and analysis, provided that the globally averaged O atom input flux is ~107 cm?2 sec?1 and the eddy diffusion coefficient at the tropopause is ~103 cm2 sec?1. Implications for the possible presence of other atoms and molecules derived from the satellites are discussed.  相似文献

A simple model of the motion of charged particles in the closed field line magnetic field for L ? 4·5 is used together with Injun 3 measurements of 40 keV precipitated electrons made in the northern hemisphere to estimate theoretically the extent of electron precipitation, the energy input and the 3914 Å airglow in the South Atlantic geomagnetic anomaly. Using average values of the northern hemisphere precipitated electron flux, two regions of significantly enhanced electron precipitation are found in the southern hemisphere. One occurs in the region 10–20°E and 40–50°S, with L ≈ 2, and the second near 30°E and 65°S, with L ≈ 4.5. Approximately 0.04 erg cm?2 sec?1 are deposited by 40 keV electrons for 50 per cent of the time in the first region and half that amount in the second. This increases to ~0·1 and 0·02 erg cm?2 sec?1 respectively for 15 per cent of the time for near sunspot minimum conditions. The results show a gradual increase in precipitation on the western side of the anomaly followed by a rapid increase and sudden cut-off in precipitation within a few degrees west of minimum B. The flux on L = 2 reaches a “spike” in the southern hemisphere ~f35 times greater than the average flux precipitated on L = 2 in the northern hemisphere. This increase in precipitation arises from the loss of “trapped” particles to the atmosphere where the mirror heights are lowest.  相似文献

We report a detailed analysis of an interaction between two coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that were observed on 14?–?15 February 2011 and the corresponding radio enhancement, which was similar to the “CME cannibalism” reported by Gopalswamy et al. (Astrophys. J. 548, L91, 2001). A primary CME, with a mean field-of-view velocity of 669 km?s?1 in the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO), was more than as twice as fast as the slow CME preceding it (326 km?s?1), which indicates that the two CMEs interacted. A radio-enhancement signature (in the frequency range 1 MHz?–?400 kHz) due to the CME interaction was analyzed and interpreted using the CME data from LASCO and from the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) HI-1, radio data from Wind/Radio and Plasma Wave Experiment (WAVES), and employing known electron-density models and kinematic modeling. The following results are obtained: i) The CME interaction occurred around 05:00?–?10:00 UT in a height range 20?–?25 R. An unusual radio signature is observed during the time of interaction in the Wind/WAVES dynamic radio spectrum. ii) The enhancement duration shows that the interaction segment might be wider than 5 R. iii) The shock height estimated using density models for the radio enhancement region is 10?–?30 R. iv) Using kinematic modeling and assuming a completely inelastic collision, the decrease of kinetic energy based on speeds from LASCO data is determined to be 0.77×1023 J, and 3.67×1023 J if speeds from STEREO data are considered. vi) The acceleration, momentum, and force are found to be a=?168 m?s?2, I=6.1×1018 kg?m?s?1, and F=1.7×1015 N, respectively, using STEREO data.  相似文献

The first results of a comprehensive computer analysis of over 300 front film and grid coincidence events is presented using statistical tests on the observed data. The short term time dependence of the observed flux is entirely commensurate with a random Poisson distribution and any possible contributions from discrete “cometary showers” must certainly be of relatively minor significance compared to the sporadic background for mass > 10?13 g. Periodic seasonal variations of ~ 20 per cent of the average rate are observed common to Pioneers 8 and 9. These variations could reflect on the cometary nature of the source or alternatively indicate the presence of an interstellar component. The mass spectrum of the flux in the range 10?11?10?13 g indicates an increasing flux of particles to the lowest limits of mass detected, with a derived flux of Φ = 1·4 × 10?12m?0·68 (g) m?2 sec?1(2π ster.)?1.  相似文献

A formula is obtained for the rate coefficient for the production of a particle with a specific energy in an elastic collision with the atoms of a thermal gas. Accurate calculations are carried out of the energy transfer in elastic collisions of oxygen and hydrogen atoms. The fractions of hydrogen atoms with sufficient energy to escape from Venus produced in collisions of oxygen atoms with energies of 2.6 eV in a gas of atomic hydrogen at 100, 200 and 300 K are respectively 5.1, 6.9 and 8.5%.The mutual diffusion coefficient D of oxygen and hydrogen atoms is obtained. It can be represented by Dn = 7.25 × 1017T0.71cm?1s?1 where n is the total atom density and T is the temperature.  相似文献

This study analyzes the evolution of 2 × 105 orbits with initial parameters corresponding to the orbits of comets of the Oort cloud under the action of planetary, galactic, and stellar perturbations over 2 × 109 years. The dynamical evolution of comets of the outer (orbital semimajor axes a > 104 AU) and inner (5 × 103 < a (AU) < 104) parts of the comet cloud is analyzed separately. The estimates of the flux of “new” and long-period comets for all perihelion distances q in the planetary region are reported. The flux of comets with a > 104 AU in the interval 15 AU < q < 31 AU is several times higher than the flux of comets in the region q < 15 AU. We point out the increased concentration of the perihelia of orbits of comets from the outer cloud, which have passed several times through the planetary system, in the Saturn-Uranus region. The maxima in the distribution of the perihelia of the orbits of comets of the inner Oort cloud are located in the Uranus-Neptune region. “New” comets moving in orbits with a < 2 × 104 AU and arriving at the outside of the planetary system (q > 25 AU) subsequently have a greater number of returns to the region q < 35 AU. The perihelia of the orbits of these comets gradually drift toward the interior of the Solar System and accumulate beyond the orbit of Saturn. The distribution of the perihelia of long-period comets beyond the orbit of Saturn exhibits a peak. We discuss the problem of replenishing the outer Oort cloud by comets from the inner part and their subsequent dynamical evolution. The annual rate of passages of comets of the inner cloud, which replenish the outer cloud, in the region q < 1 AU in orbits with a > 104 AU (~ 5.0 × 10?14 yr?1) is one order of magnitude lower than the rate of passage of comets from the outer Oort cloud (~ 9.1 × 10?13 yr?1).  相似文献

Observations of sodium D-line emission from Io and the magnetosphere of Jupiter are reported. A disk-shaped cloud of sodium is found to exist in the Jovian magnetosphere with an inner edge at about 4R and an outer edge at about 10R . The gravitational scale height above the equatorial plane is a few Jovian radii. The data are interpreted in terms of a sputtering model, in which the sodium required to maintain the cloud is sputtered off the surface of Io by trapped energetic radiation-belt protons. Conditions on the atmospheric density are obtained. The Keplerian orbits attainable by such escaping sputtered atoms can provide the observed spatial distribution. The required 500-keV proton flux required to provide the 1–10 keV protons which will sputter the sodium at the surface of Io is consistent with the limiting trapped flux determined by ion-cyclotron turbulence.Publication No. 1410, Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, University of California, Los Angeles 90024, Cal., U.S.A.  相似文献

Io's sodium clouds result mostly from a combination of two atmospheric escape processes at Io. Neutralization of Na+ and/or NaX+ pickup ions produces the “stream” and the “jet” and results in a rectangular-shaped sodium nebula around Jupiter. Atmospheric sputtering of Na by plasma torus ions produces the “banana cloud” near Io and a diamond-shaped sodium nebula. Charge exchange of thermal Na+ with Na in Io's atmosphere does not appear to be a major atmospheric ejection process. The total ejection rate of sodium from Io varied from 3×1026 to 25×1026 atoms/s over seven years of observations. Our results provide further evidence that Io's atmospheric escape is driven from collisionally thick regions of the atmosphere rather than from the exosphere.  相似文献

Previous calculations of the surface wind stress required to raise dust on Mars are reconsidered and the threshold friction velocity is found to be about 2.0 m sec?1 with particles of 200–300 μm being the most easily lifted. With this friction velocity, the planetary resistance law yields a corresponding wind at the top of the Ekman layer of 60 m sec?1, and the logarithmic wind law yields a corresponding wind at the top of the Prandtl layer of 38 m sec?1. These speeds are somewhat lower than those used by previous investigators.Various mechanisms for producing such strong winds are examined and it is concluded that the general circulation, thermal effects of topography, mechanical effects of topography and dust devils are all capable of doing so.Dust storms associated with small-scale disturbances are found to be incapable of growth. A scaling analysis of the equations of horizontal motion and of hydrostatic balance shows that a dust cloud at least 10 km thick and several tens of km in radius can, by absorption of sunlight, generate temperature gradients that, in turn, produce winds capable of raising more dust. Thus, a feedback mechanism is suggested in which an initial dust cloud exceeding certain critical dimensions can grown to planetary size. The preference of large dust storms to occur at southern hemisphere summer solstice is attributed to the maximum of insolation at that time. It is suggested that the frequent origin in the Noachis-Hellas region may be due to orographic features of the right scale and to low height in that area.  相似文献

We have constructed a model of the physical processes controlling Titan's clouds. Our model produces clouds that qualitatively match the present observational constraints in a wide variety of model atmospheres, including those with low atmospheric pressures (25 mbar) and high atmospheric pressures. We find the following: (1) high atmospheric temperatures (160°K) are important so that there is a large scale height in the first few optical depths of cloud; (2) the aerosol mass production occurs at very low aerosol optical depth so that the cloud particles do not directly affect the photochemistry producing them; (3) the production rate of aerosol mass by chemical processes is probably greater than 3.5 × 10?14 g cm?2 sec?1; (4) and the eddy diffusion coefficient is less than 5 × 106 cm2 sec?1 except perhaps in the top optical depth of the cloud. Our model is not extremely sensitive to particle shape, but it is sensitive to particle density. Higher particle densities require larger aerosol mass production rates to produce satisfactory clouds. Particle densities of unity require a mass production rate on the order of 3.5 × 10?13 g cm?2 sec?1. We also show that an increase in mass input causes a decrease in the mean particle size, as required by J. B. Pollack et al. (1980, Geophys. Res. Lett. 7, 829–832), to explain the observed correlation between the solar cycle and Titan's albedo; that coagulation need not be extremely inefficient in order to obtain realistic clouds as proposed by M. Podolak and E. Podolak (1980, Icarus43, 73–83); that coagulation could be inefficient due to photoelectric charging of the particles; and, that the lifetime of particles near the altitude of unit optical depth is a few months, as required to explain the temporal variability observed by S. T. Suess and G. W. Lockwood and D. P. Cruikshank and J. S. Morgan (1979, Bull. Amer. Astron. Soc.11, 564). Although Titan's aerosols are ottically thick in the vertical direction, the atmosphere is so extended that the horizontal visibility is greater than that found anywhere at Earth's surface.  相似文献

The Jovian hydrogen torus associated with Io, that was observed by Judge and Carlson, has been found by them to be a third of a torus rather than a complete torus. It is shown that the energetic particles observed by Pioneer 10 do not ionize atomic hydrogen sufficiently fast to erode the torus as observed. It is proposed that the reason an incomplete torus exists is the presence of a corotating cold magnetospheric plasma. If this explanation is correct, the angular extent of the fractional torus is a measure of the density of the magnetospheric plasma near Io's orbit, which is found to be ~102cm?3. It is shown that such a plasma may provide an adequate input to Io, where it can recombine and escape, to form enough hydrogen atoms to explain the number of observed torus atoms. Thus the magnetospheric plasma may serve as both the source and the sink of the torus. However, while it is not difficult to make the plasma be the sink of the toroidal hydrogen, it is difficult (although perhaps possible) to self-consistently make it the source. It may be necessary to invoke some other mechanism to generate the hydrogen.  相似文献
