Linear analysis shows that radial oscillations in accretion disks around compact object are overstable to axisymmetric perturbation under a variety of conditions. Furthermore, numerical simulations confirm that the radial oscillations induce quasi-periodic modulations of the disk luminosity. The disk oscillation model may be responsible for quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), cataclysmic variables (CVs), and other compact objects.  相似文献

Anharmonic oscillations of rotating stars have been studied by various authors in literature to explain the observed features of certain variable stars. However, there is no study available in literature that has discussed the combined effect of rotation and tidal distortions on the anharmonic oscillations of stars. In this paper, we have created a model to determine the effect of rotation and tidal distortions on the anharmonic radial oscillations associated with various polytropic models of pulsating variable stars. For this study we have used the theory of Rosseland to obtain the anharmonic pulsation equation for rotationally and tidally distorted polytropic models of pulsating variable stars. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of rotation and tidal distortions on the shapes of the radial velocity curves for rotationally and tidally distorted polytropic models of pulsating variable stars. The results of the present study show that the rotational effects cause more deviations in the shapes of radial velocity curves of pulsating variable stars as compared to tidal effects.  相似文献

We consider the damping mechanisms for the radial oscillations of solar coronal loops in the approximation of a thin magnetic flux tube. We show that the free tube oscillations can have a high Q if the plasma density inside the magnetic flux tube is much higher than the density outside. We analyze the effect of radial coronal-loop magnetic-field oscillations on the modulation of the microwave radiation from solar flares. In the case of a nonthermal gyrosynchrotron mechanism, the fluxes from optically thin and optically thick sources are modulated in antiphase. Based on our model, we diagnose the flare plasma. For the event of May 23, 1990, we estimate the spectral index for accelerated electrons, α≈4.4, and the magnetic-field strength in the region of energy release, B≈190 G.  相似文献

The measured properties of stellar oscillations can provide powerful constraints on the internal structure and composition of stars. To begin this process, oscillation frequencies must be extracted from the observational data, typically time series of the star's brightness or radial velocity. In this paper, a probabilistic model is introduced for inferring the frequencies and amplitudes of stellar oscillation modes from data, assuming that there is some periodic character to the oscillations, but that they may not be exactly sinusoidal. Effectively, we fit damped oscillations to the time series, and hence the mode lifetime is also recovered. While this approach is computationally demanding for large time series (>1500 points), it should at least allow improved analysis of observations of solar-like oscillations in subgiant and red giant stars, as well as sparse observations of semiregular stars, where the number of points in the time series is often low. The method is demonstrated on simulated data and then applied to radial velocity measurements of the red giant star  ξ Hydrae  , yielding a mode lifetime between 0.41 and 2.65 d with 95 per cent posterior probability. The large frequency separation between modes is ambiguous, however we argue that the most plausible value is 6.3 μHz, based on the radial velocity data and the star's position in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram.  相似文献

We study acoustic oscillations (eigenfrequencies, velocity distributions, damping times) of normal crusts of strange stars. These oscillations are very specific because of huge density jump at the interface between the normal crust and the strange matter core. The oscillation problem is shown to be self-similar. For a low (but non-zero) multipolarity l , the fundamental mode (without radial nodes) has a frequency of ∼300 Hz and mostly horizontal oscillation velocity; other pressure modes have frequencies ≳20 kHz and almost radial oscillation velocities. The latter modes are similar to radial oscillations (having approximately the same frequencies and radial velocity profiles). The oscillation spectrum of strange stars with crust differs from the spectrum of neutron stars. If detected, acoustic oscillations would allow one to discriminate between strange stars with crust and neutron stars and constrain the mass and radius of the star.  相似文献

The radial oscillations of coaxial magnetic flux tubes with an azimuthal field in the shell modeling current-carrying coronal loops are studied in the cool plasma approximation. Since the concept of current-carrying coronal loops provides a theoretical basis for studying simple loop flares, finding their parameters by means of coronal seismology is a topical problem of modern solar physics. The dispersion equation for radial oscillations is derived and the dispersion curves are constructed. Oscillations with arbitrarily long periods are shown to exist at the fundamental radial mode.  相似文献

We have derived the equations which govern the linear nonadiabatic general-relativistic radial oscillations. The perturbation produces a heat flux that is coupled with the geometry, through the Einstein field equations of a stellar configuration. The classical limit is recovered. The stability conditions are examined by means of a simplified one-zone model.  相似文献

We study the possibility of the excitation of non-radial oscillations in classical pulsating stars. The stability of an RR Lyrae model is examined through non-adiabatic non-radial calculations. We also explore stability in the presence of non-linear coupling between radial and non-radial modes of nearly identical frequency.   In our model, a large number of unstable low-degree (ℓ = 1,2) modes have frequencies in the vicinity of unstable radial mode frequencies. The growth rates of such modes, however, are considerably smaller than those of the radial modes. We also recover an earlier result that at higher degrees (ℓ = 6–12) there are modes trapped in the envelope with growth rates similar to those of radial modes.   Subsequently, monomode radial pulsation of this model is considered. The destabilizing effect of the 1:1 resonance between the radial mode and nearby non-radial modes of low degrees is studied, with the assumption that the excited radial mode saturates the linear instability of all other modes. The instability depends on the radial mode amplitude, the frequency difference, the damping rate of the non-radial mode, and the strength of the non-linear coupling between the modes considered. At the pulsation amplitudes typical for RR Lyrae stars, the instability of the monomode radial pulsation and the concomitant resonant excitation of some non-radial oscillation modes is found to be very likely.  相似文献

We propose three mechanisms for the generation of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in X-ray binaries. Two of them are based on an analogy with nonlinear oscillations of gaseous cavities in a fluid. The first mechanism, called magnetocavitation, implies that X-ray QPOs are produced by radial oscillations of the neutron-star magnetosphere interacting with accreted plasma. The photon-cavitation mechanism is considered when studying X-ray QPOs in neutron stars with critical (Eddington) luminosities. In this case, X-ray QPOs are generated by radial oscillations of photon cavities in the fully ionized hydrogen plasma that settles in the accretion column of a compact object. The mechanism according to which X-ray QPOs result from nonlinear oscillations of current sheets originating in accretion disks is suggested to explain QPOs in X-ray binaries with black holes and in cataclysmic variables. The calculated values of basic physical parameters of QPOs, such as the characteristic frequency, the dependences of QPO frequency and amplitude on X-ray flux, photon energy, and QPO lag time between photons at different energies are in good agreement with observational data.  相似文献

The theory of the oscillations of axisymmetric gaseous configurations with a prevalent magnetic field is presented. The virial tensor method is used to obtain the nine second harmonic modes of oscillations of the system. It is found that out of the nine modes, three are neutral, four are non-radial, and two are coupled. For the Prendergast spherical model it is found that one of the coupled modes is radial and the other non-radial. Both the radial and the non-radial modes obtained in this case agree with the corresponding formulae obtained byChandrasekhar andLimber (1954) andWoltjer (1962).The equilibrium structure of gaseous polytropes with toroidal magnetic fields is also investigated in detail for values of the polytropic indexn=1, 1.5, 2, 3 and 3.5. For this model the components of the moment of intertia and potential energy tensors together with the non-zero components of the supermatrix potential are obtained. The final results in terms of the effect of weak toroidal magnetic fields on the characteristic frequencies of distorted polytropes are presented in the form of tables.  相似文献

Observational aspects of the previously found quasi-hourly oscillations of magnetic fragments in sunspot polar coordinates are investigated. The orientation of the oscillations is shown to be azimuthally anisotropic, with their amplitude reaching a maximum in penumbra at a distance of ~0.8 sunspot radius (the maximum amplitude is estimated to be 3700 km). Based on the detected deviations of the oscillations from the radial direction, we numerically simulate the horizontal configuration of field lines in the region of the major spots in bipolar groups.  相似文献

The oscillations of a magnetized incompressible cylinder with a uniform magnetic field along its axis and the resulting electromagnetic field are studied. Two types of characteristic oscillations, torsional and Alfvén, are found to exist in the linear approximation. In the case of an infinite cylinder with torsional oscillations, no electromagnetic field is generated. In the case of Alfvén oscillations, an electromagnetic field develops around the cylinder with a local flux density that falls off exponentially with radial distance from the axis of the cylinder and has a time average of zero. The results are interpreted physically.  相似文献

The equilibrium structure and oscillations of a partially degenerate standard model in the presence of a poloidal magnetic field have been studied. The magnetic field in the interior has been matched with an outside dipole field. The effect of magnetic field on the various structural parameters, e.g., mass, central condensation, moment of inertia, and oblateness has been computed for different values of the central degeneracy of the model. We have also studied the effect of magnetic field on radial oscillations of the configuration. A variational formulation is used to compute the changes in the frequency of radial mode of oscillation. It has been shown that the changes in frequency computed for various models using a two-parameter eigenfunction are in fair agreement with the values obtained by using the exact eigenfunction.  相似文献

A model of 5M hydrogen-helium star with no metals has been considered. The properties of the adiabatic oscillations were obtained, and the vibrational instability of the model has been investigated. The model is a double-shell burning star. Calculations were done for the fundamental mode as well as the first and the second harmonics. The model has been found vibrationally unstable against radial adiabatic pulsations.  相似文献

The stability of radial solar acoustic oscillations is studied using a time-dependent formulation of mixing-length theory. Though the radiation field is treated somewhat simplistically with the Eddington approximation, and we appreciate that any coupling of the pulsation to the radiation field is important, for the lower frequency radial modes that have been computed this should not produce too serious an error. Instead, we have concentrated upon treating the coupling with convection as accurately as is currently possible with generalized mixing-length theory in order to learn something about its pertinence. Our principal conclusion is that, according to this theory, solar radial acoustic oscillations are expected to be stable and generated by turbulence. Moreover, the theory predicts changes in mode frequency that may, in part, explain the discrepancy between solar observations and the adiabatic pulsation frequencies of theoretical models. We also compute the amplitudes of the modes using a theory of stochastic excitation. These are in good agreement with observed power spectra.  相似文献

The aim of the first part of this investigation will be to establish the explicit form of the linearized systems of differential equations governing arbitrary oscillations (of amplitudes small enough for their squares and higher powers to be negligible) of the rotating Roche model in Clairaut's coordinates (in which their radial component is identified with the total potential). By solving these equations in a closed form we shall prove that this model is incapable of performing such oscillations (for any type of symmetry) about equipotential surfaces representing the figures of equilibrium, as soon as the centrifugal force will cause their equilibrium form to depart from a sphere. In the second part of this paper we shall set up the closed forms of the Laplace equation in Clairaut (non-orthogonal) as well as Roche (orthogonal) coordinates associated with the rotating Roche model; and by a construction of their solution establish successively the explicit forms of the respective harmonic functions associated with such figures (as a generalization of Legendre functions which are similarly associated with a sphere.  相似文献

Exact analytic expressions for the vacuum electromagnetic fields produced by an oscillating magnetized sphere are obtained. The solutions are analysed for various modes of pulsation and for low-order multipole magnetic moments. Within the context of neutron star oscillations, the possibility of gamma-ray generation is discussed. It is shown that the radial pulsations provide an efficient mechanism for generation of gamma-radiation and electron-positron pairs in some regions around the neutron star. For this, the non-vanishing quadrupole magnetic moment oblique to the dipole moment is required. The model for gamma-ray bursts that we propose is briefly considered.  相似文献
