We measured the amount of arsenic, chromium, copper, lead, nickel, vanadium, and zinc accumulated over a five-year period from 1997 to 2002 in surface sediments of seven salt marshes along the New Brunswick coast of the Bay of Fundy, Canada. Study sites extended from outer to inner Bay, spanning a gradient in tidal range (6–12 m) and mean sediment deposition rate (0.27–1.76 cm yr−1). In each study site, metal concentrations were measured in low and high marsh areas. Concentrations of chromium, nickel, and zinc appear to be within their natural range, while arsenic, lead, and vanadium are enriched in some sites. Calculated sediment metal loadings rates showed variability among marsh sites that closely followed sediment deposition patterns, suggesting sediment deposition rate is the driving factor of short-term metal accumulation in Fundy marshes. The value of salt marshes as a sink for metals may be enhanced by high sedimentation rates.  相似文献

Metal partitioning depends on the physical–chemical conditions of a system and can be affected by anthropogenic inputs. In this study, the authors report the results of trace metal partitioning between particulate (>1.2 μm), colloidal (1.2 μm–1 kDa) and truly dissolved (<1 kDa) fractions in the polluted section of the Upper Vistula River compared with the non-polluted headwaters. It was found that the salt input in the Vistula River induced a decrease of colloid concentration and the increase of suspended particulate matter. Compared with upstream from the polluted section, the metal concentrations (Co, Cu, Cr, Mn and Zn) in the colloidal fraction were lower. It was mainly due to the rapid colloid coagulation at increased salinity, the competition with ligands and major ions (Ca and Mg) and the weak mobility of metals associated with particles at the pollution sources.  相似文献

根据已有文献归纳出盐沼植物对水动力、悬沙运动、沉积、地貌影响研究已取得的进展,包括:①单位距离盐沼中波能的损失可为相邻光滩的数倍至数十倍;波浪传入互花米草盐沼20~30 m后,波能可全部损失;②盐沼植物可使潮流流速降低一个数量级;当植冠被淹没后,垂向流速剖面在植冠附近出现转折;③当植冠被淹没后,垂向上植冠层内的紊动强度趋于一致且明显低于植冠层以上;互花米草盐沼中的紊动强度可比相邻光滩低1~2个数量级;④盐沼植物通过2种机制影响悬沙的运动:其一是降低水体紊动,从而促进悬沙的沉降并遏制滩面沉积物再悬浮;其二是茎叶对悬沙的直接黏附。这两种机制可使盐沼中的悬沙浓度比相邻光滩低一半以上;⑤植物对细颗粒悬沙的促淤作用导致盐沼中的底床滩面沉积物细化;⑥盐沼中的垂向沉积速率可比光滩高7~8倍;盐沼中波痕和侵蚀坑等微地貌不易发育,滩面平整化;与光滩上频繁发生的冲淤交替相比,盐沼中通常只淤不冲,滩面稳定性较高;⑦植物对上述沉积动力过程的影响程度与植物的高度、密度、盖度等生态参数密切相关,因此,不同的植物种类对沉积动力过程的影响往往存在显著差异。在此基础上,展望了今后该领域研究进一步加强的几个方面。 [HT5H]关〓键〓词:[HT5K] [HT5H]中图分类号:〓〓〓文献标识码:A[HT5SS][HK]  相似文献

库车前陆褶皱-冲断带盐构造差异变形和分段性特征探讨   总被引:17,自引:6,他引:11  
通过野外地质调查、GIS分析、三维可视化分析、盐相关构造变形样式的探讨、平衡剖面分析以及缩短量和缩短率的估算,表明库车前陆褶皱—冲断带盐构造具有明显的差异变形和分段性特征。差异变形主要表现为纵向上不同层次变形的差异性以及平面上构造变形的分带性与分段性。段与段的分界一般为走滑断层,在野外可见大量断层三角面、擦痕、阶步、错断的山脊和河谷等现象,地貌GIS分析可以揭示一些构造分段的细节特征,三维可视化反映了隐伏的残留盐枕的分段性。不同的段具有迥然不同的构造变形样式,平衡剖面分析可以估算出不同段落缩短量和缩短率的明显差异。盐构造差异变形和分段性的形成一方面受控于天山造山带的分段性活动过程,还和盐岩层本身的沉积学特征及盐体展布格局有关,同时还明显受到基底构造的控制,与基底古隆起、基底断裂及古构造断坡的发育密切相关。  相似文献

Bencubbin is a breccia containing metal and silicate clasts, along with occasional chondritic fragments. The breccia is cemented together by a small amount of shock-melted metal-silicate matrix. There is no evidence, however, for complete melting of either metal or silicate clasts after their incorporation within the breccia. The main metal phase occurs as rounded and angular clasts of Fe-Ni. Each clast is chemically homogeneous, but systematic chemical variations between clasts are observed with Ni concentrations varying from ? 5.3 wt% in some clasts up to 7.5 wt% in others. Cobalt concentrations vary between clasts from 0.25 to 0.35 wt% and are positively correlated with Ni. The Co and Ni concentrations are consistent with the metal condensation path (pressure ? 10-3 atm) predicted by Grossman and Olsen (1974, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta38, 173–187). The P vs Ni concentrations are consistent with the metal condensation path (pressure ? 10?4atm) predicted by Wai et al. (1978, Lunar and Planetary Science IX, pp. 1193–1195). Thus we believe that Bencubbin metal clasts may record chemical information imparted during condensation of the metal from the nebula. Chromium concentrations in Bencubbin metal (0.05–0.30 wt%) greatly exceed concentrations observed in iron meteorites as predicted by Grossman and Olsen (1974, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta38, 173–187) for metal condensates from the solar nebula. The Cr-Ni trend in Bencubbin, however, is positively correlated with Ni, in contrast to the predicted condensation trend. This unexpected correlation may be the result of subsequent redistribution of Cr between metal and micron-sized troilite blebs. The incorporation of these troilite blebs within the metal clasts is difficult to explain in terms of low temperature (? 700 K) condensation of troilite. The possible explanations for the presence of the troilite may or may not be consistent with an unaltered primitive composition for the metal clasts. High temperature equilibrium condensation of Bencubbin metal, however, is also supported by the low Ga and Ge contents reported by Kallemeynet al. (1978, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta42, 507–515). Three of the metal clasts were found to contain ?2.3wt% Si in alloy with the metal. The compositions of these clasts are consistent with equilibrium condensation at a pressure of ? 1 atm from a gas of cosmic composition. The Si-rich clasts could also have condensed at lower pressures from a gas with a fractionated CO ratio relative to cosmic abundances.  相似文献

碱渣回填到充满卤水的废弃盐腔后,颗粒会自由沉降到盐腔底部形成沉积层,进而在自重作用下固结。为了解盐腔内回填碱渣的沉降固结特性,以江苏淮安地区碱渣为对象,进行了沉降柱试验和固结试验。试验结果表明:(1)碱渣在卤水中的沉降过程可以分为3个阶段:絮凝阶段、沉降阶段和固结阶段。初始浓度对碱渣的沉降曲线和沉降速率有很大的影响。(2)碱渣颗粒分布、密度、含水率和孔隙比均呈现出分层特性,颗粒粒径、密度随深度的增加而增大,含水率、孔隙比随深度的增大而减小。(3)碱渣具有很高的压缩性,压缩系数a1-2为3.36 MPa-1。在压力范围小于100 kPa下,固结系数随固结压力的增加而显著减小。试验结果对了解盐腔内回填碱渣的沉降固结特性提供了参考,有利于指导回填施工工艺和碱渣的后期处理。  相似文献

A two-layer model for the flow and sedimentation within a salt wedge or highly stratified hypopycnal fluvial plume emptying into a fiord is developed from basic principles. From this model, it is found that the amount of suspended sediment of a particular grain size decreases as an exponential function of distance, and that the velocity and depth of the plume converge to constant values. The model is consistent with measurements from the plume of the Homathko River in Bute Inlet, British Columbia, Canada, and suggests that certain aspects of current empirical models of plume sedimentation are based upon sound principles.  相似文献

通过对赣江河漫滩剖面沉积物中持久性有机污染物中OCPs和PCBs沉积记录进行研究,确定赣江流域有机污染历史。根据其浓度变化,进行了分子地层学的划分,其中在26~46 cm层段都存在HCHs、DDTs和PCBs的高浓度残留量,并且DDTs高浓度残留量则延续的更长。整个剖面中OCPs和PCBs残留量属于非污染状态,但应注意其重新被释放到环境中的风险。POPs分子沉积记录与赣江流域使用历史记录相一致,从而具有一定研究近现代沉积物的年代学意义。  相似文献

老挝甘蒙省钾镁盐矿床位于呵叻盆地的东隅,本文以该矿床ZK318钻孔的含矿段———下盐层为研究对象,对其开展了系统的矿物学和地球化学特征研究。结果表明,矿石矿物以石盐、钾石盐和光卤石为主,含少量方硼石和硬石膏。根据矿物与主量元素的分布特征,将下盐层分为5个次层,由下至上顺序为:盐岩层(石盐为主)→钾盐岩层(钾石盐为主)→光卤石岩层(光卤石为主)→薄盐岩层(石盐为主)→钾盐岩层(钾石盐为主)。微量元素Br值均大于200×10-6,表明卤水来源于海水;由盐岩层→钾盐岩层→光卤石岩层,B含量呈现出逐渐升高的趋势,表明B含量与卤水盐度呈线性关系。但顶部钾盐岩层的B含量高达890×10-6,与少量方硼石的存在相吻合,指示成矿卤水除了海水外,还有深部热液的贡献。按照卤化物卤水蒸发浓缩的顺序,光卤石是该卤水浓缩的最后阶段,但在光卤石沉积之后,又晶出一薄层石盐,表明曾经历过一次短暂的淡水补给。上、下两层钾石盐具有基本相同的Br含量,分别为1 790×10-6和1 792×10-6,且均直接沉积在石盐之上,故为原生钾石盐,而非光卤石的次生淋滤产物。认为甘蒙省钾镁盐矿床为海源陆相沉积,海水和深部热液是成钾物质的主要来源,钻孔中出露的两层钾石盐均为原生沉积。  相似文献

It was shown that the contents of Ni, Mo, and Co in the siliceous clay black shale rocks of the normal sections of the Bazhenov Formation are several times higher than the global mean contents of these elements in black shales. These rocks have the highest contents of pyrite and organic carbon and show evidence for strongly reducing formation conditions at the slowest background rate of sedimentation of their material. A transition from the siliceous clay rocks to the mudstones of normal section, which are considered as turbidites, and further to the mudstones and clayey silt rocks of the so-called anomalous sections (deposits of submarine deltas and canyons) is accompanied by sequential depletion in pyrite and organic carbon, a decrease in indicators of the reduction level of the sedimentation environment, and an increase in sedimentation rate and clay material content. Simultaneously, the contents of the elements of interest decreases in the sequence Mo > Ni > Co. In the rocks of anomalous sections, the contents of these elements decrease to the level of their mean abundances in clays.  相似文献

The effect of different concentrations of sodium chloride on the metabolic activity of halophilic bacteria derived from the Lake Gardno estuary was studied using respirometric methods. The influence of salt was examined in two ways: the bacteria were preincubated in various concentrations of sodium chloride, and the cells used for respirometric measurements were supplied with substrates dissolved in water amended with various concentrations of the salt. Generally, an increase in the concentration of sodium chloride in the medium used for preincubation resulted in an increase in metabolic activity. Conversely, a decrease was noted when solutions of increasing salt content were employed to dissolve the substrate. The decrease in oxygen uptake noted when increased amounts of salt were added is proposed to be the result of the short period allowed for adaptation of cells to the higher salt concentrations.  相似文献

The Salinas de Añana diapir is located in the Basque-Cantabrian basin part of the great evaporite basin, along with the Gulf of Mexico and the Central European basin, when the fragmentation of Pangea started. The evolution of these basins can only be achieved by understanding the control of salt in the sedimentary and tectonic evolution of these basins.Sedimentation began with clastic Buntsandstein sediments and minor Muschelkalk limestones. Subsequent Keuper evaporites are the bottom of sedimentary cover constituted by Jurassic limestones and marls, a clastic Lower Cretaceous and an alternant limestone and marl Upper Cretaceous, whose deposition has been conditioned by salt tectonics. The emplacement of salt extends from the Aptian until now, favored by the duplication of the salt thickness associated with the thrust of Sierra Cantabria, so it is an excellent example to study changes in the regime of intrusion along the time. The geodynamic evolution of the Salinas de Añana diapir was determined through the interpretation of 45 reprocessed seismic lines, along with information from three wells. Migration of the salt in this diapir, conditioned by N120E and N30E pre-Alpine basement lineations, was determined using time isopach maps of the various rock layers. Vertical evolution of the diapir was determined through the reconstruction of a north-south section at various geologic times by flattening the respective seismic horizons. A minimum of salt flow into the diapir coincides with a minimum rate of sedimentation during the Turonian. Similarly, maximum flows of salt into the diapir occurred during the Coniacian and Lower Santonian and again from the end of the Lower Miocene to the present, coinciding with maximum rates of sedimentation during these times. In the Tertiary, probably during the Oligocene, the diapir was displaced to the south by the Sierra Cantabria thrust, maintaining the contact between the evaporites of diapir and the same evaporites of the lower block. Since the Oligocene, the salts of the lower block migrated towards and into the diapir, deforming the trace of the overthrust.  相似文献

A study of the extracts of samples recording a transgressive–regressive succession of the Werra cyclothem, Zechstein (Upper Permian), from the southern margin of the European Permian Basin (the Fore-Sudetic Monocline, Poland) provides an insight into major sources of organic matter and diagenetic processes. The studied cross-section comprises all lithologies representative for the European basin, including transgressive sandstones (Weissliegend) and organic-rich shales (Kupferschiefer) followed by carbonates as well as regressive anhydrites with intercalations of rock salt. Due to the variable influence of overlapping diagenetic processes that affected the organic matter, i.e. maturation and late diagenetic oxidation related to base metal mineralisation, a reliable comparison of the biomarker results is only possible for the major upper part of the section (ca. 38 m, including carbonates and evaporites) but not for the oxidised first 2–3 m from the base of the Kupferschiefer.The transition from carbonate to evaporate sedimentation is associated with a shift to predominant even C-numbered n-alkanes, increased abundance of carotanes and high homohopane index reflecting enhanced reducing conditions. The presence of the C25 regular isoprenoid, squalane, biphytane and the rapid decrease in the pristane/phytane ratio in the evaporites are mainly controlled by the important contribution from both halophilic and methanogenic archaea. The occurrence of gammacerane in the anhydrites suggests development of water column stratification at some stages of the sea regression. This is associated with appearance of specific aryl isoprenoids with a lycopane carbon skeleton most likely related to Botrycoccus braunii race L algae. Lycopane derivative occurrence suggests that such an algal race could have occurred since Permian (currently known Recent-Eocene). The presence of the abundant freshwater/brackish algal biomarkers in evaporititic deposits can be envisaged in the costal part of the Zechstein basin with temporary salt wedge estuary water stratification. The algae bloomed in the top fertile fresh/brackish water layer fed by rivers, and the algal biomass was deposited on the sea floor covered with evaporitic brine. The stratification periodically broke down during precipitation of the rock salt, presumably due to a decrease in riverine water input, as revealed by characteristic disappearance of gammacerane and hopane distributions similar to those observed for the carbonate rocks.The methylphenanthrenes/phenanthrene ratio was used together with methyldibenzothiophenes/ dibenzothiophene ratio to assess maturity. These maturity estimations indicate that the peak of oil window has been reached, which is confirmed by other biomarker maturity parameters based on sterane and hopane distributions. The maturity stage of oil generation and expulsion was further confirmed by the presence of solid bitumen as cements in the sandstone underlying Kupferschiefer and bitumen veins and lenses in the carbonates.  相似文献

Zonation of salt marsh plants has been widely recognized and studied, but the boundary between salt marsh and adjacent upland plants has seldom been considered. Three hypotheses about the boundary between salt marsh and adjacent upland pasture were tested on Kooragang Island, New South Wales, Australia. First, we hypothesized that increased tidal range resulting from removal of culverts that restricted tidal flow to areas of salt marsh would lead to landward spread of salt marsh into areas previously dominated by pasture. Monitoring results showed an increase in areal cover by salt marsh plants and a decrease in pasture plants along the boundary between salt marsh and pasture in areas affected by culvert removal, while no change could be detected at a reference site unaffected by culvert removal. Second, we hypothesized that the down-gradient distribution of the pasture species Stenotaphrum secundatum (buffalo grass) was restricted by physical conditions, while the up-gradient distribution of the salt marsh species Sarcocornia quinqueflora (samphire) was restricted by competition with pasture species. Results of a reciprocal transplant experiment were consistent with this hypothesis. Third, we hypothesized that the rate of salt marsh spread following culvert removal would be influenced by competition with pasture species. Results of an experiment in which pasture was removed adjacent to a salt marsh affected by culvert removal were consistent with this hypothesis. Results may help guide management of over 1,300 structures that restrict tidal flow to estuarine wetland habitat in New South Wales, Australia.  相似文献

In aquatic systems, the bioavailability of an element to microorganisms is greatly influenced by its chemical speciation. The goal of this work was to assess metal toxicity to a green algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) and a bacterium (Vibrio fisheri) as a function of size fractionation and chemical speciation (using the program MINTEQA2) in contaminated water of the Upper Vistula River. Water samples were collected at 1 reference site, 4 polluted sites and one polluted site on the Vistula's main tributary, the Przemsza River. Toxicity measurements were performed on unfiltered samples and, total dissolved (<1.2 μm), and truly dissolved (<1 kDa) fractions. Trace metal (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, Zn) concentrations were measured in these samples and also in the colloidal fraction (1 kDa–1.2 μm). At the reference site, the low metal concentrations were in agreement with the absence of measurable toxicity. In the polluted section of the river, free metal concentrations were largely below the potential toxic levels for bacteria, which was in agreement with the absence of toxicity. Although Zn2+ was at potentially toxic-level concentrations in total dissolved and truly dissolved fractions in the polluted riverine section, toxicity for algae was observed, only in truly dissolved fractions from two stations. The absence of toxicity in most samples was related to metal association with particles and with low molecular weight ligands as well as the presence of organic ligands (phenol). The reason for toxic effects in two ultrafiltered samples is not clear, but may be related to the elimination of the colloidal organic fraction and thus the eradication of its protective effect occurring in natural samples.  相似文献

Statistical comparisons of heavy-metal concentrations in river sediments   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Statisticalt tests were used to determine lead, copper, and chromium enrichment in sediments from the Lower Branch of the Rouge River in southeast Michigan, USA. Both absolute metal concentrations and ratios of trace metal to conservative metal concentrations were used to compare sampled sites along the Lower Branch of the Rouge River to background sites in the headwaters region. Concentration ratios were used to reduce the effects of certain chemical and physical characteristics on the level of metal contained in a given sediment. Results from the comparison of sample sites to the background reveal metal enrichment at several sites, particularly along the highly urbanized, downstream section of the river. This section of the Lower Branch of the Rouge River exhibits significant lead and copper contamination, as well as measurable chromium enrichment when using either concentrations alone or ratios as methods of comparison. The areas of metal enrichment appear to coincide closely with areas of known anthropogenic activities. Of particular interest, however, is the enrichment of lead and copper at two upstream sites where the statistical tests suggest an anthropogenic source for the enrichment, but where no previously known cultural activities existed. These data prompted a historical search of records, which discovered several abandoned landfills immediately upstream of the metal enrichment sites.  相似文献

Surface elevation tables, feldspar marker horizons, and210Pb analysis of core profiles were implemented at four sites in Western Port Bay, Victoria, Australia, to provide information on the role of sedimentation, subsidence or compaction, and enhanced sea-level rise in contributing to salt marsh decline. Photogrammetric surveys indicate that the rate of salt marsh decline that is attributable to mangrove encroachment is lower in Western Port Bay than in comparable sites in New South Wales. Differences in the rate of mangrove encroachment at Western Port Bay may be attributed to the inverse relationship found between the degree of mangrove encroachment and surface elevation increase. While sedimentation contributes to surface elevation changes, surface elevation is not solely explained by sedimentation; factors including autocompaction and changes in the water table also play a significant role in Western Port Bay. Historic sedimentation rates measured using210Pb dating techniques corresponded to contemporary sedimentation rates determined from feldspar marker horizons. Core sediment profiles show no change in sedimentation rates at three sites. A fourth site (French Island) was the only site that exhibited high rates of sedimentation, which appears to be related to local land-use changes in the area. All sites maintained their elevation with respect to sea level over the study period. Historic sedimentation exceeded sea-level rise for the past 32 yr, but it is difficult to determine the extent to which belowground processes affect surface elevation, causing deviations between surface elevation and sedimentation over longer periods.  相似文献

The major and minor element composition of ferromanganese nodules from DOMES Site A has been determined by X-ray fluorescence methods. Three phases appear to control the bulk compositions: Mn and Fe oxyhydroxides and aluminosilicates. Relatively wide compositional variations are evident throughout the area. Nodules with high Mn/Fe ratios, high Cu, Mg, Mo, Ni and Zn concentrations and high todorokite/δ-MnO2 ratios have granular surface textures and are confined to an east-west trending depression with thin Quaternary sediment cover. Nodules with low Mn/Fe ratios, high concentrations of As, Ca, Ce, Co, La, P, Sr, Ti, V, Y and Zr and low todorokite/δ-MnO2 ratios have smooth surfaces and are confined to shallower areas with relatively thick Quaternary sediment to the north and south of the depression.All nodules in the area have compositions which are influenced by diagenesis, but those with the most marked diagenetic signature (high Mn/Fe and Cu/Ni ratios, low Ce/La ratios and more todorokite) are found in areas of very slow or non-existent sedimentation; many of these nodules are actually in contact with outcropping Tertiary sediment. This paradox may be resolved by postulating, by analogy with some shallow-water occurrences, that the nodules accrete from bottom waters which have enhanced particulate and dissolved metal contents derived from diagenetic reaction in areas remote from the site of nodule formation. The metals are supplied in a bottom flow (probably Antarctic Bottom Water) which also erodes, or prevents modern sedimentation in, the depression. Nodules on the flanks of the depression are not evidently affected by this flow and derive at least pan of their constituent metals from diagenetic reaction in the underlying Quaternary sediment.Apparently, abyssal diagenetic nodules can have an immediate and a remote diagenetic metal source. Metal fluxes derived from pore water dissolved metal gradients may not be relevant to particular accreting nodules if a significant fraction of their metals is derived from outside the area in which they form.  相似文献

Coastal salt marshes represent an important coastal wetland system. In order to protect coastlines from erosion and rapid increase in accumulation rate, Spartina alterniflora (S. alterniflora) was introduced into the Chinese coast. Two study areas (Wanggang and Quanzhou Bay) were selected that represent the plain type and embayment type of the coastal salt marshes. In situ measurements show that the tidal current velocities are stronger on the intertidal mudflat without S. alterniflora than that with S. alterniflora, and the velocity above the canopy surface is larger than that in the salt marsh canopy. The existence of S. alterniflora also influences the velocity structure above the bare flat during ebb tide. With the decrease in current flow velocity when seawater enters into the S. alterniflora marsh, suspended sediments are largely entrapped on the marsh surface, leading to increase in sedimentation rates and change in physical evolution processes of the coastal salt marshes. The highly developed root systemof S. alterniflora induces sediment mixing and exchange between subsurface sediment strata and affects the vertical sediment distribution remarkably. The sedimentation rate of S. alterniflora marsh at the Wanggang area is much higher than the relative sea level rise rate, where rapid progradation of theWanggang saltmarshes that is protecting the coast from sea erosion is observed.  相似文献

A study took place during May 1998 and May 1999 to examine the processes controlling localized accumulation of fine-grained sediments in the lower Ashepoo River. This region, referred to as the Mud Reach, is an area of muddy bottom sediments bounded by fine sands. The Mud Reach is located downstream of the landward extent of the salt intrusion where an estuarine turbidity maximum commonly occurs. Tidal time-series measurements made in the Mud Reach during May 1998, when river discharge was at a 10-yr high, showed high concentrations of suspended sediment (0.05–1 g I−1) during maximum tidal current velocity with concentrations in the bottom 30 cm exceeding 70 g I−1 (fluid mud). A correlation between salinity stratification and increased suspended sediment concentration suggests that inhibited vertical mixing enhances the settling of flocculated sediments to the bed. Measurements made during May 1999 show a two-order-of-magnitude decrease in the concentration of near-bed sediments. A decrease in river discharge during the 1999 observation period of more than 100 m3 s−1 suggests that changes in the hydrography and in the supply of sediments to the system both may be important factors in the trapping of fine-grained sediments in the region. The source of sediments is likely from muddy deposits in the Fenwick Cut, a man-made section of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway about 2 km north of the Mud Reach that connects the Ashepoo and Edisto Rivers. The Fenwick Cut appears to be an effective area for trapping sediments where shoaling has increased by 130% in the last decade. Current measurements show that flow velocities decrease through the Cut, likely allowing for the settling of suspended particles that form the thick deposits of unconsolidated mud observed during both years.  相似文献
