In this short paper, the combined effect of global dust storms and the oblateness on the mean seasonal daily insolations at the Martian surface is investigated. Due to the flattening, the mean summertime insolation is increased at equatorial and low latitudes, decreased at mid- and high latitudes. When comparing a spherical with an oblate planet Mars, it is found that the percentage differences of the mean summer daily insolations are dependent upon the optical depths () considered. For an atmosphere without aerosols, the maximum percentage differences are respectively equal to + 0.05 and – 0.2%; at = 3.0 the corresponding values amount to about 0.1 and 2%. In winter, the mean daily insolations are decreased over the entire latitudinal interval, where the maximum values are found at polar region latitudes; at e.g. a latitude of 85 the loss of solar energy enhances from 2 ( = 0.0) to more than 30% ( = 3.0). The mean annual daily insolation is maximally reduced by about 0.5 and 2% for optical thicknesses of 0.0 and 3.0, respectively.  相似文献

In this paper, we compare changes in the mean seasonal daily insolations at the Martian surface caused by global dust storms characterized by various atmospheric optical thickness (). The calculations, made for optical depths equal to 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0, are based on the assumption of planet encircling storms lasting one season or one year. The variations in the latitudinal and seasonal surface insolation distributions are important, mainly at the poles where e.g. the mean annual and summer daily insolations decrease by nearly a factor of 3000 as goes from 0 to 3.0. At equatorial latitudes the corresponding loss is much smaller, reaching a value of approximately 40. Concerning the mean wintertime solar radiations it is found that the decrease is even more spectacular, especially at high latitudes.  相似文献

Calculations of the daily solar radiation incident at the top of the atmospheres of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, with and without the effect of the oblateness, are presented in a series of figures illustrating the seasonal and latitudinal variation of the ratio of both insolations. It is shown that for parts of the summer, the daily insolation of an oblate planet is increased, the zone of enhanced solar radiation being strongly dependent upon the obliquity, whereas the rate of increase is fixed by both the flattening and the obliquity. In winter, the oblateness effect results in a more extensive polar region, the daily solar radiation of an oblate planet always being reduced when compared to a spherical planet. In addition, we also numerically studied the mean daily solar radiation. As previously stated by A.W. Brinkman and J. McGregor (1979, Icarus, 38, 479–482), it is found that in summer the horizon plane is tilted toward the Sun for latitudes less than the subsolar point, but is titled away from the Sun beyond this latitude. It follows that the mean summer daily insolation is increased between the equator and the subsolar point, but decreased poleward of the above-mentioned limit. In winter, however, the horizon plane is always tilted away from the Sun, causing the mean winter daily insolation to be reduced. The partial gain of the mean summertime insolation being much smaller than the loss during winter season evidently yields a mean annual daily insolation which is decreased at all latitudes.  相似文献

In this paper, we compare changes in the insolation at Pluto, corresponding to three epochs during the dynamical history of the planet: t = – 1, 0 and 0.5, where t is the time in millions of years A.D. The two extreme values of t coincide respectively with a maximum (126 ) and a minimum (102 ) value of the obliquity (). The other orbital elements i.e. the eccentricity (e) and the longitude of the perihelion ( p ) which affect solar radiation and which are apt to significant periodic changes are also calculated for the times under consideration. In a series of figures, the combined influence of the evolving dynamic parameters on the daily insolation and on the mean (summer, winter, annual) daily insolation is illustrated.  相似文献

We have studied the vertical structure of hazes at six different latitudes (−60°, −50°, −30°, −10°, +30°, and +50°) on Saturn's atmosphere. For that purpose we have compared the results of our forward radiative transfer model to limb-to-limb reflectivity scans at four different wavelengths (230, 275, 673.2, and 893 nm). The images were obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 in September 1997, during fall on Saturn's northern hemisphere. The spatial distribution of particles appears to be very variable with latitude both in the stratosphere and troposphere. For the latitude range +50° to −50°, an atmospheric structure consisting of a stratospheric haze and a tropospheric haze interspersed by clear gas regions has been found adequate to explain the center to limb reflectivities at the different wavelengths. This atmospheric structure has been previously used by Ortiz et al. (1996, Icarus 119, 53-66) and Stam et al. (2001, Icarus 152, 407-422). In this work the top of the tropospheric haze is found to be higher at the southern latitudes than at northern latitudes. This hemispherical asymmetry seems to be related to seasonal effects. Different latitudes experience different amount of solar insolation that can affect the atmospheric structure as the season varies with time. The haze optical thickness is largest (about 30 at 673.2 nm) at latitudes ±50 and −10 degrees, and smallest (about 18) at ±30 degrees. The stratospheric haze is found to be optically thin at all studied latitudes from −50 to +50 degrees being maximum at −10° (τ=0.033). At −60° latitude, where the UV images show a strong darkening compared to other regions on the planet, the cloud structure is remarkably different when compared to the other latitudes. Here, aerosol and gas are found to be uniformly mixed down to the 400 mbar level.  相似文献

A study is made of the rotation of large-scale magnetic fields using the synoptic maps from the Kitt Peak National Observatory for the time interval 1976–1985. The auto-correlation method and the mass-centers method of magnetic structures was applied to infer mean differential rotation profiles and rotation profiles separately for each magnetic field polarity. It has been found that in both hemispheres the leading polarity rotates faster than the following polarity at all latitudes by about 0.04° day–1. The maximum rotation rate of the leading polarity is reached at about 6° latitude. In the mean profile for both polarities, this brings about two angular velocity maxima at 6° latitudes in both hemispheres. Such a profile appears as to have a dimple on the equator.  相似文献

In this paper we briefly study changes in the mean seasonal insolations on the planet Mars caused by significant large-scale variations in the following orbital elements: the eccentricity (e), the obliquity (ε) and the longitude of perihelion (λ p ). Three orbital configurations have been investigated. In the first, the eccentricity equals successively 0, 0.075, and 0.15, whereas for the obliquity and the longitude of perihelion we took the present values which amount, respectively to 25° and 250°. In the second situation, ε=15, 25, and 35° for a circular orbit (e=0) and with λ p =250°. In the last model we have sete=0.075 and ε=25° for λ p =?90,0, and 90°. Although long-term periodic oscillations ofe (first case) and λ p (third case) produce, respectively, very small or no variations in the average yearly insolation, fluctuations of the above mentioned planetary data strongly effect the mean summer and winter daily insolations. Indeed, the calculations reveal that between the two extreme values of the orbital elements used, the seasonal insolations exhibit a change in amplitude of about 15 to 20% difference over the entire latitude interval. Considering more particularly the second case it is found that the summertime insolation experiences a nearly similar variation as the mean annual daily insolation — i.e., a decrease of about 7% at the equator and a more than twofold increase at the poles. The corresponding mean winter daily insolation varies maximally by approximately 60% in the 60–80° latitude range.  相似文献

Sequential observations at Huairou Solar Observation Station, China, and Kitt Peak, U.S.A., show that polar magnetic elements can live from several to more than 58 hours. This enables measurement of the solar rotation rate near the polar region by tracing magnetic element motions. With observations carried out on 8–15 July 1997, we identify and trace more than 1300 elements at north heliographic latitudes between 55°–85° using two methods, and fit the mean sidereal rotation rate as =14.0±0.54–(2.24±1.22)sin2–(1.78±0.79)sin4 deg per day.  相似文献

The sidereal rotation rate of the high-latitude solar regions is examined using long-lived photospheric polar faculae. The observations were carried out with the photoheliograph of Kislovodsk Mountain Station of the Pulkovo Observatory from 1982 to 1986. The following facts have been established: (a) There is a differential rotation of the polar faculae close to the maximum of solar activity, while the amount of latitude gradient of solar rotation decreases towards the sunspot minimum; (b) small differences of rotation in the northern and southern hemispheres of the Sun are observed; (c) some deviations of differential rotation curves constructed for each Carrington rotation from the mean curve of differential rotation are revealed. The total amplitude of the maximum positive and negative excesses is about 40–50 m s–1. The positive surplus velocities of solar rotation (the amplitude of which is about 20–25 m s–1) move in the form of a wave from heliographic latitudes 40° with a velocity of 1.6 m s–1. The latitude width of this flow is B 15°. This wave of abnormally high velocity starts in the year of minimum solar activity and reaches the pole 11 years later. The picture is symmetrical relative to the equator.  相似文献

The structure of the outer part of the Galaxy is studied, based upon 21-cm line observations of Hi in the region 288°l310°, –7°b2°.In this longitude range the galactic plane is strongly bend toward negative latitudes. The principal outer structure is a spiral arm which has a pitch angle of 10° and is formed by several concentrations differing in shape and size. There exists also a secondary concentration which could be a split from the previous structure.Possible hypotheses about the origin of the later feature are discussed.  相似文献

Measurements of the vertical and latitudinal variations of temperature and C2H2 and C2H6 abundances in the stratosphere of Saturn can be used as stringent constraints on seasonal climate models, photochemical models, and dynamics. The summertime photochemical loss timescale for C2H6 in Saturn's middle and lower stratosphere (∼40-10,000 years, depending on altitude and latitude) is much greater than the atmospheric transport timescale; ethane observations may therefore be used to trace stratospheric dynamics. The shorter chemical lifetime for C2H2 (∼1-7 years depending on altitude and latitude) makes the acetylene abundance less sensitive to transport effects and more sensitive to insolation and seasonal effects. To obtain information on the temperature and hydrocarbon abundance distributions in Saturn's stratosphere, high-resolution spectral observations were obtained on September 13-14, 2002 UT at NASA's IRTF using the mid-infrared TEXES grating spectrograph. At the time of the observations, Saturn was at a LS≈270°, corresponding to Saturn's southern summer solstice. The observed spectra exhibit a strong increase in the strength of methane emission at 1230 cm−1 with increasing southern latitude. Line-by-line radiative transfer calculations indicate that a temperature increase in the stratosphere of ≈10 K from the equator to the south pole between 10 and 0.01 mbar is implied. Similar observations of acetylene and ethane were also recorded. We find the 1.16 mbar mixing ratio of C2H2 at −1° and −83° planetocentric latitude to be and , respectively. The C2H2 mixing ratio at 0.12 mbar is found to be at −1° planetocentric latitude and at −83° planetocentric latitude. The 2.3 mbar mixing ratio of C2H6 inferred from the data is and at −1° and −83° planetocentric latitude, respectively. Further observations, creating a time baseline, will be required to completely resolve the question of how much the latitudinal variations of C2H2 and C2H6 are affected by seasonal forcing and/or stratospheric circulation.  相似文献

We present a study of the vertical structure of clouds and hazes in the upper atmosphere of Saturn's Southern Hemisphere during 1994-2003, about one third of a Saturn year, based on Hubble Space Telescope images. The photometrically calibrated WFPC2 images cover the spectral region between the near-UV (218-255 nm) and the near-IR (953-1042 nm), including the 890 nm methane band. Using a radiative transfer code, we have reproduced the observed center-to-limb variations in absolute reflectivity at selected latitudes which allowed us to characterize the vertical structure of the entire hemisphere during this period. A model atmosphere with two haze layers has been used to study the variation of hazes with latitude and to characterize their temporal changes. Both hazes are located above a thick cloud, putatively composed of ammonia ice. An upper thin haze in the stratosphere (between 1 and 10 mbar) is found to be persistent and formed by small particles (radii ∼0.2 μm). The lower thicker haze close to the tropopause level shows a strong latitudinal dependence in its optical thickness (typically τ∼20-40 at the equator but τ∼5 at the pole, at 814 nm). This tropospheric haze is blue-absorbent and extends from 50 to 100 mbar to about ∼400 mbar. Both hazes show temporal variability, but at different time-scales. First, there is a tendency for the optical thickness of the stratospheric haze to increase at all latitudes as insolation increases. Second, the tropospheric haze shows mid-term changes (over time scales from months to 1-2 years) in its optical thickness (typically by a factor of 2). Such changes always occur within a rather narrow latitude band (width ∼5-10°), affecting almost all latitudes but at different times. Third, we detected a long-term (∼10 year) decrease in the blue single-scattering albedo of the tropospheric haze particles, most intense in the equatorial and polar areas. Long-term changes follow seasonal insolation variations smoothly without any apparent delay, suggesting photochemical processes that affect the particles optical properties as well as their size. In contrast, mid-term changes are sudden and show various time-scales, pointing to a dynamical origin.  相似文献

We report the first detection of propane, C3H8, in Saturn's stratosphere. Observations taken on September 8, 2002 UT at NASA's IRTF using TEXES, show multiple emission lines due to the 748 cm−1ν21 band of C3H8. Using a line-by-line radiative transfer code, we are able to fit the data by scaling the propane vertical mixing ratio profile from the photochemical model of Moses et al. [2000. Icarus 143, 244-298]. Multiplicative factors of 0.7 and 0.65 are required to fit the −20° and −80° planetocentric latitude spectra. The resultant profiles are characterized by a 5 mbar mixing ratio of 2.7±0.8×10−8 at −20° and at −80° latitude. These results suggest that the time scale for meridional circulation lies between the net photochemical lifetimes of C2H2 and C3H8, ≈30-600 years.  相似文献

We report quantitative analysis of the radial gradient of solar angular velocity at depths down to about 15 Mm below the solar surface for latitudes up to 75° using the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) observations of surface gravity waves (fmodes) from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). A negative outward gradient of around –400 nHz/R , equivalent to a logarithmic gradient of the rotation frequency with respect to radius which is very close to –1, is found to be remarkably constant between the equator and 30° latitude. Above 30° it decreases in absolute magnitude to a very small value at around 50°. At higher latitudes the gradient may reverse its sign: if so, this reversal takes place in a thin layer extending only 5 Mm beneath the visible surface, as evidenced by the most superficial modes (with degrees l>250). The signature of the torsional oscillations is seen in this layer, but no other significant temporal variations of the gradient and value of the rotation rate there are found.  相似文献

The interplanetary sector structure observed by the IMP-1 satellite during three solar rotations in 1963–4 is compared with the photospheric magnetic field structure observed with the solar magnetograph at Mt. Wilson Observatory. The interplanetary sector structure was most prominent on the sun in latitudes between 10 °N and 20 °N, although the average heliographic latitude of the satellite was 3 1/2 °S. A superposed-epoch analysis of the calcium plage structure obtained from the Fraunhofer Institute daily maps of the sun is used to discuss the relation between the structure of the plages and the interplanetary sector structure. A possible explanation for the observations is discussed in terms of a North-South asymmetry in the flow of the solar wind. It is suggested that these observations favor the equinoctial hypothesis as compared with the axial hypothesis for the explanation of the semi-annual maxima in geomagnetic activity.  相似文献

We have undertaken an analysis of the Voyager photopolarimeter (PPS) stellar occultation data of Saturn's A ring. The Voyager PPS observed the bright star δ Scorpii as it was occulted by Saturn's main rings during the spacecraft flyby of the Saturn system in 1981. The occultation measurement produced a ring profile with radial resolution of approximately 100 m, and radial structure is evident in the profile down to the resolution limit. We have applied an autoregressive technique to the data for estimating the power spectrum as a function of radius, which has allowed us to identify 40 spiral density waves in Saturn's A ring, associated with the strongest torques due to forcing from the moons. The majority of the detected waves are observed to disperse linearly in regions beginning a few kilometers from the resonance location. We have used the dispersion behavior for those waves to calculate local surface mass densities in the vicinity of each wave. We find that the inner three-quarters of the A ring (up to the beginning of the Encke gap) has an average surface mass density of , while the outer region has an average surface mass density of . The two regions have different mean surface mass densities with a significance of approximately 0.999993, as estimated with a T-statistic, which corresponds to about 4.5σ. While the mean optical depth of the A ring increases slightly with increasing distance from Saturn, we find that it is not significantly correlated with the surface mass density; the two quantities having a linear Pearson's correlation coefficient of rcorr≈−0.03. The variation of mass density, independent of PPS optical depth, is consistent with previous conjectures that the particle size distribution and composition are not constant across the entire A ring, particularly in the very outer portion. We estimate the mass of Saturn's A ring from our surface mass density estimates as 4.9×1021 gm, or 8.61×10−9 of the mass of Saturn, roughly equivalent to the mass of a 110-km diameter icy satellite. This mass is almost 25% smaller than estimates from previous studies, but is well within the expected errors of the derived mass densities. We also identified three previously unstudied features which exhibit linear dispersion. The strongest of these features is tentatively identified as the Janus 13:11 density wave. The other two features do not fall near any known satellite resonances and may represent density waves created by previously undetected satellites.  相似文献

We study the meridional flow of small magnetic features, using high-resolution magnetograms taken from 1978 to 1990 with the NSO Vacuum Telescope on Kitt Peak. Latitudinal motions are determined by a two-dimensional crosscorrelation analysis of 514 pairs of consecutive daily observations from which active regions are excluded. We find a meridional flow of the order of 10 m s–1, which is poleward in each hemisphere, increases in amplitude from 0 at the equator, reaches a maximum at mid-latitude, and slowly decreases poleward. The average observed meridional flow is fit adequately by an expansion of the formM () = 12.9(±0.6) sin(2) + 1.4(±0.6) sin(4), in m s–1 where is the latitude and which reaches a maximum of 13.2 m s–1 at 39°. We also find a solar-cycle dependence of the meridional flow. The flow remains poleward during the cycle, but the amplitude changes from smaller-than-average during cycle maximum to larger-than-average during cycle minimum for latitudes between about 15° and 45°. The difference in amplitude between the flows at cycle minimum and maximum depends on latitude and is about 25% of the grand average value. The change of the flow amplitude from cycle maximum to minimum occurs rapidly, in about one year, for the 15–45° latitude range. At the highest latitude range analyzed, centered at 52.5°, the flow is more poleward-than-average during minimumand maximum, and less at other times. These data show no equatorward migration of the meridional flow pattern during the solar cycle and no significant hemispheric asymmetry. Our results agree with the meridional flow and its temporal variation derived from Doppler data. They also agree on average with the meridional flow derived from the poleward migration of the weak large-scale magnetic field patterns but differ in the solar-cycle dependence. Our results, however, disagree with the meridional flow derived from sunspots or plages.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. under cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The solar rotation rate at latitudes 0°, 15° and 30° has been inferred by averaging the results of 120 regions of 15°×15°, which have been studied over a total area of about 75° in latitude and 360° in longitude. A local helioseismology technique, the ring diagram analysis method, has been used to analyse the horizontal velocity vectors from about 0.95 R up to the surface. Our results are in very good agreement with those of other authors over most of the depth range. However, near the surface we find sharp local features which are not reported in other studies. The independent measurements of the rotation rate in the north and south hemispheres show asymmetries below 0.975 R . The data used are full-disc dopplergrams taken by Solar Oscillation Investigation/Michelson Doppler Imager (SOI/MDI) on board of the SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) during its first Dynamic Program, between 1996 May and June.  相似文献

It is shown that during the present solar cycle (No-20), the 5303 coronal intensity at heliographic latitudes between 15°–40° in both hemispheres had two maxima. The first maximum occurred in 1967–68 and the second in 1969–70. At lower latitudes ( ± 10°) there was only one clear maximum in 1970. These results are in good agreement with those of Gnevyshev (1967) for the previous solar cycle. The North-South asymmetry of 5303 intensity for the period 1957–1970 is studied and its implications to solar-terrestrial relationships are discussed. It is shown that during the period studied, the N-S asymmetry of 5303 intensity is negatively correlated with sunspot activity.  相似文献

Cosmic X-rays in the energy range between 0.210 keV were observed with polypropylene window proportional counters on board a sounding rocket. The field of view crossed the galactic plane in the Sgr region and reached galactic latitudes of 50° and –90°. A new soft X-ray source was found in the Aries-Taurus region. The soft X-ray flux from the direction of NGC 1275 was conspicuous, whereas that of Sgr region source were very weak. The distribution of the intensity of diffuse soft X-rays over the scanned region indicates the galactic emission of soft X-rays.  相似文献
