We investigate the brightest regions of the kpc-scale jet in the powerful radio galaxy 3C 346, using new optical Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) ACS/F606W polarimetry together with Chandra X-ray data and 14.9 and 22.5 GHz Very Large Array (VLA) radio polarimetry. The jet shows a close correspondence between optical and radio morphology, while the X-ray emission shows a  0.80 ± 0.17 kpc  offset from the optical and radio peak positions. Optical and radio polarimetry show the same apparent magnetic field position angle and fractional polarization at the brightest knot, where the jet undergoes a large kink of almost 70° in the optical and radio images. The apparent field direction here is well aligned with the new jet direction, as predicted by earlier work that suggested the kink was the result of an oblique shock. We have explored models of the polarization from oblique shocks to understand the geometry of the 3C 346 jet, and find that the upstream flow is likely to be highly relativistic  (βu= 0.91+0.05−0.07)  , where the plane of the shock front is inclined at an angle of  η= 51°± 11°  to the upstream flow which is at an angle  θ= 14+8−7  deg to our line of sight. The actual deflection angle of the jet in this case is only 22°.  相似文献

We report the first detection, with Chandra , of X-ray emission from the jet of the powerful narrow-line radio galaxy 3C 346. X-rays are detected from the bright radio and optical knot at which the jet apparently bends by approximately 70°. The Chandra observation also reveals a bright galaxy-scale atmosphere within the previously known cluster and provides a good X-ray spectrum for the bright core of 3C 346. The X-ray emission from the knot is synchrotron radiation, as seen in lower-power sources. In common with these sources, there is evidence of morphological differences between the radio/optical and X-ray structures, and the spectrum is inconsistent with a one-component continuous-injection model. We suggest that the X-ray-bright knot is associated with a strong oblique shock in a moderately relativistic, light jet, at ∼ 20° to the line of sight, and that this shock is caused by the jet interacting with the wake in the cluster medium behind the companion galaxy of 3C 346. The general jet curvature can result from pressure gradients in the cluster atmosphere.  相似文献

We present radio observations of the radio galaxy PKS 2152–699 obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The much higher resolution and signal-to-noise ratio of the new radio maps reveal the presence of a bright radio component about 10 arcsec north-east of the nucleus. This lies close to the highly ionized cloud previously studied in the optical and here shown in a broad-band red snapshot image with the HST PC 2. It suggests that PKS 2152–699 may be a jet/cloud interaction similar to 3C 277.3. This could cause the change in the position angle (of ∼ 20°) of the radio emission from the inner to the outer regions. On the large scale, the source has Fanaroff & Riley type II morphology although the presence of the two hotspots in the centres of the lobes is unusual. The northern lobe shows a particularly relaxed structure while the southern one has an edge-brightened, arc-like structure.  相似文献

We present and discuss observations of the radio galaxy 0755+379 made with the VLA at 1.4 and 5.0 GHz and with MERLIN at 1.7 GHz. These data allow us to image the radio jets over two orders of magnitude in linear size and to investigate the hypothesis that jets in low-luminosity radio galaxies start with velocities close to c and then slow down to subrelativistic speeds. We apply a model for an adiabatically expanding relativistic jet to the observed surface brightness and derive velocity profiles along the jet for various assumed starting conditions. We show that these profiles are consistent with the observed jet/counter-jet brightness ratios provided that the angle to the line of sight θ ≃27°. The inferred velocity at a distance of 0.5 kpc from the nucleus is ≃0.9 c . Finally, we show that the predicted velocity at 10 kpc from the nucleus is consistent with that obtained independently from energy-balance arguments.  相似文献

Our Chandra observation of the FR I radio galaxy 3C 66B has resulted in the first detection of an X-ray counterpart to the previously known radio, infrared and optical jet. The X-ray jet is detected up to 7 arcsec from the core and has a steep X-ray spectrum, α ≈1.3±0.1 . The overall X-ray flux density and spectrum of the jet are consistent with a synchrotron origin for the X-ray emission. However, the inner knot in the jet has a higher ratio of X-ray to radio emission than the others. This suggests that either two distinct emission processes are present or differences in the acceleration mechanism are required; there may be a contribution to the emission from the inner knot from an inverse Compton process or it may be the site of an early strong shock in the jet. The peak of the brightest radio and X-ray knot is significantly closer to the nucleus in the X-ray than in the radio, which may suggest that the knots are privileged sites for high-energy particle acceleration. 3C 66B's jet is similar both in overall spectral shape and in structural detail to those in more nearby sources such as M87 and Centaurus A.  相似文献

We report the discovery of a double–double radio galaxy (DDRG), J0041+3224, with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) and subsequent high-frequency observations with the Very Large Array (VLA). The inner and outer doubles are aligned within ∼4° and are reasonably collinear with the parent optical galaxy. The outer double has a steeper radio spectrum compared to the inner one. Using an estimated redshift of 0.45, the projected linear sizes of the outer and inner doubles are 969 and 171 kpc, respectively. The time-scale of interruption of jet activity has been estimated to be ∼20 Myr, similar to other known DDRGs. We have compiled a sample of known DDRGs, and have re-examined the inverse correlation between the ratio of the luminosities of the outer to the inner double and the size of the inner double, l in. Unlike the other DDRGs with   l in≳ 50 kpc  , the inner double of J0041+3224 is marginally more luminous than the outer one. The two DDRGs with   l in≲  few kpc have a more luminous inner double than the outer one, possibly due to a higher efficiency of conversion of beam energy as the jets propagate through the dense interstellar medium. We have examined the symmetry parameters and found that the inner doubles appear to be more asymmetric in both its armlength and its flux density ratios compared to the outer doubles, although they appear marginally more collinear with the core than the outer double. We discuss briefly the possible implications of these trends.  相似文献

We use the Hubble Ultra Deep Field to study the galaxy luminosity–size  ( M – R e )  distribution. With a careful analysis of selection effects due to both detection completeness and measurement reliability, we identify bias-free regions in the   M – R e   plane for a series of volume-limited samples. By comparison to a nearby survey also having well-defined selection limits, namely the Millennium Galaxy Catalogue, we present clear evidence for evolution in surface brightness since   z ∼ 0.7  . Specifically, we demonstrate that the mean, rest-frame B -band  〈μ〉 e   for galaxies in a sample spanning 8 mag in luminosity between   M B =−22  and −14 mag increases by ∼1.0 mag arcsec−2 from   z ∼ 0.1  to 0.7. We also highlight the importance of considering surface brightness-dependent measurement biases in addition to incompleteness biases. In particular, the increasing, systematic underestimation of Kron fluxes towards low surface brightnesses may cause diffuse, yet luminous, systems to be mistaken for faint, compact objects.  相似文献

We apply an inverse Compton   e ±  pair cascade model for γ-ray production in the massive binary system LSI +61° 303 assuming that electrons are accelerated already inside the inner part of the jet launched by the compact object. γ-ray spectra, affected by the cascade process, and lower energy spectra, from the synchrotron cooling of the highest energy electrons in the jet, are calculated as a function of the phase of this binary system. γ-ray spectra expected in such a model have different shape than those ones produced by electrons in the jet directly to observer. Moreover, the model predicts clear anticorrelation between γ-ray fluxes in the GeV (1–10 GeV) and TeV (>200 GeV) energy ranges with the peak of the TeV emission at the phase ∼0.5 (the peak half-width ranges between the phases ∼0.4–0.9, for the inclination of the binary system equal to 60°, and ∼0.4–0.1 for 30°). The fine features of TeV γ-ray emission (fluxes and spectral shapes) as a function of the phase of the binary system are consistent with recent observations reported by the MAGIC collaboration. Future simultaneous observations in the GeV energies (by the GLAST and AGILE telescopes) and in the TeV energies (by the MAGIC and VERITAS telescopes) should test other predictions of the considered model supporting or disproving the hypothesis of acceleration of electrons already in the inner part of the microquasar jets.  相似文献

In strong gravitational lensing, the multiple images we see correspond to light rays that leave the source in slightly different directions. If the source emission is anisotropic, the images may differ from conventional lensing predictions (which assume isotropy). To identify scales on which source anisotropy may be important, we study the angle δ between the light rays emerging from the source, for different lensing configurations. If the lens has a power-law profile   M ∝ R γ  , the angle δ initially increases with lens redshift and then either diverges (for a steep profile  γ < 1  ), remains constant (for an isothermal profile  γ= 1  ), or vanishes (for a shallow profile  γ > 1  ) as   z l→ z s  . The scaling with lens mass is roughly  δ∝ M 1/(2−γ)  . The results for an Navarro–Frenk–White (NFW) profile are qualitatively similar to those for a shallow power law, with δ peaking at about half the redshift of the source (not half the distance). In practice, beaming could modify the statistics of beamed sources lensed by massive clusters: for an opening angle  θjet  , there is a probability as high as   P ∼ 0.02–0.07(θjet/0.5°)−1  that one of the lensed images may be missed (for  2 ≲ z s≲ 6  ). Differential absorption within active galactic nuclei (AGNs) could modify the flux ratios of AGNs lensed by clusters; a sample of AGNs lensed by clusters could provide further constraints on the sizes of absorbing regions. Source anisotropy is not likely to be a significant effect in galaxy-scale strong lensing.  相似文献

The microlensing optical depth to Baade's Window constrains the minimum total mass in baryonic matter within the Solar circle to be greater than ∼     , assuming the inner Galaxy is barred with viewing angle ∼20°. From the kinematics of solar neighbourhood stars, the local surface density of dark matter is ∼     . We construct cuspy haloes normalized to the local dark matter density and calculate the circular-speed curve of the halo in the inner Galaxy. This is added in quadrature to the rotation curve provided by the stellar and ISM discs, together with a bar sufficiently massive so that the baryonic matter in the inner Galaxy reproduces the microlensing optical depth. Such models violate the observational constraint provided by the tangent-velocity data in the inner Galaxy (typically at radii     . The high baryonic contribution required by the microlensing is consistent with implications from hydrodynamical modelling and the pattern speed of the Galactic bar. We conclude that the cuspy haloes favoured by the cold dark matter cosmology (and its variants) are inconsistent with the observational data on the Galaxy.  相似文献

We present simultaneous ASCA and RXTE observations of Ark 564, the brightest known 'narrow-line' Seyfert 1 in the 2–10 keV band. The measured X-ray spectrum is dominated by a steep (Γ≈2.7) power-law continuum extending to at least 20 keV, with imprinted Fe K-line and edge features and an additional 'soft excess' below ∼1.5 keV. The energy of the iron K-edge indicates the presence of highly ionized material, which we identify in terms of reflection from a strongly irradiated accretion disc. The high reflectivity of this putative disc, together with its strong intrinsic O  viii Ly α and O  viii recombination emission, can also explain much of the observed soft excess flux. Furthermore, the same spectral model also provides a reasonable match to the very steep 0.1–2 keV spectrum deduced from ROSAT data. The source is much more rapidly variable than 'normal' Seyfert 1s of comparable luminosity, increasing by a factor of ∼50 per cent in 1.6 h, with no measurable lag between the 0.5–2 keV and 3–12 keV bands, consistent with much of the soft excess flux arising from reprocessing of the primary power-law component in the inner region of the accretion disc. We note, finally, that if the unusually steep power-law component is a result of Compton cooling of a disc corona by an intense soft photon flux, then the implication is that the bulk of these soft photons lie in the unobserved extreme ultraviolet.  相似文献

We compare the gravitational potential profiles of the elliptical galaxies NGC 4486 (M87) and NGC 1399 (the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster) derived from X-ray and optical data. This comparison suggests that the combined contribution of cosmic rays, magnetic fields and microturbulence to the pressure is ∼10 per cent of the gas thermal pressure in the cores of NGC 1399 and M87, although the uncertainties in our model assumptions (e.g. spherical symmetry) are sufficiently large that the contribution could be consistent with zero. In the absence of any other form of non-thermal pressure support, these upper bounds translate into upper limits on the magnetic field of ∼10–20 μG at a distance of 1–2 arcmin from the centers of NGC 1399 and M87. We show that these results are consistent with the current paradigm of cool cluster cores, based on the assumption that active galactic nuclei regulate the thermal state of the gas by injecting energy into the intracluster medium. The limit of ∼10–20 per cent on the energy density in the form of relativistic protons applies not only to the current state of the gas, but also essentially to the entire history of the intracluster medium, provided that cosmic ray protons evolve adiabatically and that their spatial diffusion is suppressed.  相似文献

We compare two methods of distance determination to spiral galaxies using optical/near-infrared (NIR) observations, the ( I − K ) versus M K colour–absolute magnitude (CM) relation and the I - and K -band Tully–Fisher relation (TFR).
Dust-free colours and NIR absolute magnitudes greatly enhance the usefulness of the NIR CM relation as a distance indicator for moderately to highly inclined spiral galaxies in the field (inclinations between ∼80° and 90°); by avoiding contamination by dust the scatter in the CM relation is significantly reduced, compared with similar galaxy samples published previously. The CM relation can be used to determine distances to field spiral galaxies with M K >−25.5, to at least M K ≈−20.
Our results, supplemented with previously published observations for which we can – to some degree – control the effects of extinction, are consistent with a universal nature of the CM relation for field spiral galaxies.
High-resolution observations made with the Hubble Space Telescope can provide a powerful tool to calibrate the relation and extend the useful distance range by more than a factor of 2 compared with ground-based observations.
The intrinsic scatter in the NIR CM relation in the absolute K -band magnitudes is ∼0.5 mag, yielding a lower limit to the accuracy of distance determinations of the order of 25 per cent.
Although we find an unusually low scatter in the TFR (probably a statistical accident), a typical scatter in the TFR would yield distances to our sample galaxies with uncertainties of only ∼15 per cent. However, one of the main advantages of the use of the NIR CM relation is that we need only photometric data to obtain distance estimates; use of the TFR requires additional kinematic data, although it can be used to significantly greater distances.  相似文献

MERLIN images of Mrk 348 at 22 GHz show H2O maser emission at 0.02–0.11 Jy , within ∼ 0.8 pc of the nucleus. This is the first direct confirmation that molecular material exists close to the Seyfert 2 nucleus. Mrk 348 was observed in 2000 May one month after Falcke et al. first identified the maser in single-dish spectra. The peak maser flux density has increased about threefold. The masing region is ≲ 0.6 pc in radius. The flux density of radio continuum emission from the core has been rising for about 2 yr. The maser–core separation is barely resolved, but at the 3 σ significance level maser and core are not coincident along the line of sight. The masers lie in the direction of the northern radio lobes and probably emanate from material shocked by a jet with velocity close to c . The correlation between the radio continuum increase and maser flare is explained as arising from high-level nuclear activity through a common excitation mechanism, although direct maser amplification of the core by masers tracing a Keplerian disc is not completely ruled out.  相似文献

We determine the binary star fraction as a function of radius in NGC 1818, a young rich cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using Hubble Space Telescope images in bands F336W (∼ U ) and F555W (∼ V ). Our sample includes binaries with M primary ∼ 2–5.5 M and M secondary ≳ 0.7 Mprimary. The binary fraction increases towards the cluster centre, from ∼ 20 ± 5 per cent in the outer parts, to ∼ 35 ± 5 per cent inside the core. This increase is consistent with dynamical mass segregation and need not be primordial. We compare our results with expectations from N -body models, and discuss the implications for the formation and early evolution of such clusters.  相似文献

Recent VLBA observation indicates the existence of an elongated (jet) structure in the compact radio source Sgr A*. This is hard to explain in the context of advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) model for this source. On the other hand, the mass accretion rate favoured by ADAF is 10–20 times smaller than that favoured by the hydrodynamical simulation based on Bondi capture. If the latter were adopted, the predicted radio flux would significantly exceed the observation. A similar situation exists in the case of nearby giant ellipticals, where the canonical ADAF model – the widely assumed standard model for these sources – also significantly overpredicts the radio flux. Based on these facts, in this paper we propose a truncated ADAF model for Sgr A* and three ellipticals M87, NGC 4649 and NGC 4636. We assume that the accretion disc is truncated at a certain radius R tr within which the jet forms by extracting the energy of the disc. The radio flux is greatly suppressed owing to the radiative truncation of the disc and the fits to the observational data are excellent. For example, for Sgr A*, the model fits the observational spectrum very well from radio including the 'excess' below the break frequency to hard X-ray under a high accretion rate near the simulation value, and the predicted size-frequency relationship is also in excellent agreement with the observation; for M87, the predicted upper limit of the jet location is 24 R g, in excellent agreement with the observational result that the jet is formed on scales smaller than 30 R g, and the ≈20 per cent variability at ∼1 keV – which is hard to explain in another model that succeeded in explaining the low radio flux of M87 – is also marginally interpreted. The success of the model supplies possible evidence for the disc rather than the hole origin for the powering of jets.  相似文献

We report on the analysis of the photometric and spectroscopic properties of a sample of 29 low-redshift  ( z < 0.6)  QSOs for which both Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) WFPC2 images and ultraviolet HST   FOS spectra are available. For each object we measure the R -band absolute magnitude of the host galaxy, the C  iv (1550 Å) linewidth and the 1350 Å continuum luminosity. From these quantities we can estimate the black hole (BH) mass through the   M BH– L bulge  relation for inactive galaxies, and from the virial method based on the kinematics of the regions emitting the broad-lines. The comparison of the masses derived from the two methods yields information on the geometry of the gas emitting regions bound to the massive BH. The cumulative distribution of the linewidths is consistent with that produced by matter laying in planes with inclinations uniformly distributed between ∼10° and ∼50°, which corresponds to a geometrical factor   f ∼ 1.3  . Our results are compared with those of the literature and discussed within the unified model of active galactic nuclei.  相似文献

We present MERLIN observations of Galactic 21-cm H  i absorption at an angular resolution of  ∼0.1–0.2  arcsec and a velocity resolution of 0.5 km s−1, in the direction of three moderately low latitude  (−8° < b < −12°)  extragalactic radio sources, 3C 111, 3C 123 and 3C 161, all of which are heavily reddened. H  i absorption is observed against resolved background emission sources up to ∼2 arcsec in extent and we distinguish details of the opacity distribution within 1–1.5 arcsec regions towards 3C 123 and 3C 161. This study is the second MERLIN investigation of small-scale structure in interstellar H  i (earlier work probed Galactic H  i in the directions of the compact sources 3C 138 and 3C 147). The 0.1-arcsec scale is intermediate between H  i absorption studies made with other fixed element interferometers with resolution of 1–10 arcsec and very long baseline interferometry studies with resolutions of 10–20 mas. At a scale of 1 arcsec (about 500 au), prominent changes in Galactic H  i opacity in excess of 1–1.5 are determined in the direction of 3C 161 with a signal-to-noise ratio of at least 10σ. Possible fluctuations in the H  i opacity at the level of about 1 are detected at the  2.5–3σ  level in the direction of 3C 123.  相似文献

We present ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) and ASCA observations of the well-known ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) IRAS 19254−7245 (the 'Superantennae' ). The object is not detected by ROSAT , implying a 3 σ upper limit of X-ray luminosity L X∼8×1041 erg s−1 in the 0.1–2 keV band. However, we obtain a clear detection by ASCA , yielding a luminosity in the 2–10 keV band of 2×1042 erg s−1. The X-ray spectrum of IRAS 19254−7245 is very hard, equivalent to a photon index of Γ=1.0±0.35. We therefore attempt to model the X-ray data using a 'scatterer' model, in which the intrinsic X-ray emission along our line of sight is obscured by an absorbing screen while some fraction, f , is scattered into our line of sight by an ionized medium; this is the standard model for the X-ray emission in obscured (but non Compton-thick) Seyfert galaxies. We obtain an absorbing column density of N H=2×1023 cm−2 for a power-law photon index of Γ=1.9, an order of magnitude above the column estimated on the basis of optical observations; the percentage of the scattered emission is high (∼20 per cent). Alternatively, a model where most of the X-ray emission comes from reflection on a Compton-thick torus ( N H>1024 cm−2) cannot be ruled out. We do not detect an Fe line at 6.4 keV; however, the upper limit (90 per cent) to the equivalent width of the 6.4 keV line is high (∼3 keV). Overall , the results suggest that most of the X-ray emission originates in a highly obscured Seyfert 2 nucleus.  相似文献
