The process of accumulation of toxic substances by marine organisms is studied on the basis of the kinetic theory of systems
of macroscopic particles (V. I. Belyaev, 1987). The use of stochastic equations makes it possible to evaluate the degree of
accumulation of toxic substances in marine organisms and take into account random variations of their concentrations in marine
environments.

We propose a method for the adaptive numerical analysis of current velocities in a basin including a shelf zone and having
a lengthy open boundary with the sea, at which the current velocity is not given. This method is based on a multilayer quasiisopycnic
model. We use an approach according to which one introduces additional terms of the source type into the equations of heat
and salt transfer and the equation of evolution of the thicknesses of layers. We describe the results of calculations of the
current velocities in the northwest part of the Black Sea in June on the basis of climatic data. We also analyse specific
features of thermohaline and dynamic structure of waters.

We analyze oscillations of the Black Sea level at 43 points in the north part of the coast. At some points, the data of every-day
measurements are accumulated for more than 100 years. Actually, at all points with minor exceptions, we observe a general
trend toward an increase in the sea level. The amplitude of oscillations of the sea level about the average trend obeys a
normal distribution. We determine numerical characteristics of this distribution.

We analyze the results of numerical calculations performed according to the three-dimensional interdisciplinary model of an
ecological system of the Black-Sea shelf zone near the estuary of the Danube. The complete system of equations of hydrothermodynamics
is solved together with transport equations of the advection-diffusion-reaction type used to describe the transformation of
a substance (nitrogen) between the components of the characteristic vectors of the ecosystem: plankton, detritus, and biogenic
elements (nitrates). We describe the distinctive features of the circumcontinental distribution of components obtained as
a result of numerical experiments and present arguments for the conclusion that the ecosystem of the Danube estuary water
area plays the role of a buffer zone between the press of the Danubian biogenic pollutions and the neighbouring areas of the
shelf zone and open sea.

We use many-year archival observations of hydrologic and hydrobiologic state of the Sea of Azov for the identification of
the structure of a model of its ecosystem. The ecosystem model, supplemented with expert estimates of bioresource consumption
(fish reserve), contamination level, and possible ecologic fines for violation of the sea natural state, is formalized by
the method of system dynamics. Hereat, the major part of influence functions is found in terms of observational data with
application of self-organization algorithms. We also present the results of simulated experiments with the model of the ecosystem,
which enable us to analyse scenarios of its behaviour under the influence of various external factors (wind, river discharge,
water exchange with the Black Sea, etc.).

We analyze the dependence of climatic variations of the location of the upper boundary of the hydrogen-sulphide zone in the
Black Sea on the variations of the sea level and various types of atmospheric circulation (according to A.A. Girs). It is
discovered that the level of correlation between the indicated parameters is high and that the corresponding plots are in
good qualitative agreement. The accumulated results enable us to make an assumption that there exists an 80–100-yr cycle of
variation of all analyzed parameters and that the long-term variations of the location of the upper boundary of the hydrogen-sulphide
zone can be regarded as a manifestation of global climatic variations.

We study the possibilities of the method of laser diagnostics of the composition of multicomponent electrolytic solutions.
In our experiments, we used a four-mirror phase-retarded interferometer operating at three wavelengths from the visible range.
For three-component solutions of chloride salts, we determined partial sensitivities of the measuring system to changes in
the concentrations of each electrolyte for each of the indicated wavelengths.

Within the framework of a two-layer model, we consider the process of, formation of livel in a closed basin under the action
of a source with constant flow rate located on its boundary in the upper layer. The response of the level of the basin to
the inflow of liquid is observed in the form of the baroclinic and barotropic modes. The baroclinic mode, has the form of
an edge wave for which the deviation of level is positive for the upper layer and negative for the lower layer. The barotropic
component of the level is almost spatially homogeneous and its intensity increases with time. The increase in the volume of
the upper layer caused by the inflow of liquid on the boundary is almost completely attained in the barotropic mode. In the
lower layer, the increase in the volume attained in the barotropic mode is completely compensated by the baroclinic edge wave.

For various stratifications and different types of bottom patterns we study the transformations of solitary perturbations
of density appearing in the depth of the sea. In the two-dimensional case, under the assumption that the average dynamic characteristics
weakly vary in time as compared with the wave characteristics, we deduce the equations for mean currents and waves taking
into account vertical and horizontal viscosity and the diffusion of density. Numerical examples show that the stratification,
bottom topography, nonlinearity, mean currents, and dissipation strongly affect both the process of splitting of a solitary
wave into wave trains and their amplitude and length. The wave currents exhibit the oscillatory (train-like) character. It
is emphasized that, in the case of propagation of solitary perturbations of density with dissipation, it is also important
to take into account the combined influence of nonlinearity, currents, bottom topography, and stratification.

We present a method for the determination of the trajectory of a sounding instrument and its drift velocity in the field of
currents nonuniform in depth and develop special software for IBM/PC compatible computers. The proposed method and software
are checked by using the well-known analytic solution of a similar problem given by Academician A. N. Krylov. We also consider
some special examples of application of the developed method to the processing of the data of an OLT profilometer.

A method of statistical separation of fine-structure fluctuations according to their origin is applied to the analysis of
the characteristics of mixing in a layer located below the summer temperature minimum in the Black Sea. The simplification
of the procedure of numerical evaluation of the coefficient of vertical wave exchange enabled us to perform the comprehensive
fine-structure processing of the data of regular surveys of the Black Sea with an aim to determine the spatial distribution
of the field intensity of small-scale internal waves and the intensity of mixing caused by these waves in the analyzed layer.

We discuss the results of analysis of published data and field and laboratory investigations aimed at the solution of the
problem of comparabilityof the results of detection of hydrogen sulfide in the Black Sea by spectrophotometric and iodometric
methods. We show that the reproducibility of the results of spectrophotometric analysis is higher than hat of the iodometric
method only in the case where the content of sulfide in a sample is less than 10–30 μMl−1. When larger concentrations are involved, the traditional iodometric analysis proves to be the most precise and reliable
method for the detection of hydrogen sulfide in the Black-Sea waters.

We study the influence of floating broken ice on the mean nonzero displacements of liquid particles in nonlinear running surface
waves. The analysis is performed on the basis of a uniform asymptotic expansion (up to the quantities of the third order of
smallness as compared with the potential of the velocity of motion of liquid in a basin of finite depth) obtained by the method
of multiple scales.

We study the problem of flow around an ellipsoidal body submerged in a liquid half space and obtain the solution for the free
wave surface. The results of numerical analysis reveal the existence of a great variety of modes of motion characterized by
substantially different shapes of the free surface.

We investigate the influence of baroclinic tidal waves on the diffusion of an impurity spot in a continuously stratified liquid.
The equation of turbulent diffusion is solved numerically by taking into account the wave currents. We establish the dependences
of the characteristics of the diffusion process on the parameters of the baroclinic wave and the location of the impurity
spot.

On the basis of the data of optical investigations performed in the Black Sea, we develop a method for the evaluation of the
spectral values of underwater quantum irradiance within the band of photosynthetically active radiation according to the depth
of visibility of a Secchi disk and the intensity of illumination of the sea in luxes. The method is based on the use of the
correlations between the following optical parameters: of the vertical daylight attenuation factor α with the depth of visibility
of a Secchi disk and of the spectral values of α(λ) within the band of photosynthetically active radiation with α(λmin) for sea waters. This method is applicable in the winter-spring period when the seasonal thermocline is absent, the upper
layers of the sea are mixed, and the vertical distribution of α is uniform.

We perform the numerical analysis of the long-wave response of the free surface of a fluid in a basin of variable depth to
the formation of an anomaly of the baric field for a finite period of time. In numerical experiments, we use the distribution
of depths typical of the south coast of the Crimea. We also study the dependence of the dynamics of the sea level in the zone
of the baric anomaly and in the shelf zone on the space and time scales of local changes in the field of atmospheric pressure
in the open part of the basin.
