The transport of energy in space plasmas, especially in the solar wind, is far from being understood. Measuring the temperature of the electrons and their non-thermal properties is essential to understand the transport properties in collisionless plasmas. Quasi-thermal noise spectroscopy is a reliable tool for measuring the electron temperature accurately since it is less sensitive to the spacecraft perturbations than particle detectors. We apply this method to Ulysses radio data obtained during the first pole-to-pole fast latitude scan in the high-speed solar wind, using a kappa function to describe the electron velocity distribution. We deduce the variations with heliocentric distance between 1.5 and 2.3 AU in the fast solar wind at high latitude in terms of three fitting parameters: the electron density varies as n e??R ?1.96±0.08, the electron temperature as T e??R ?0.53±0.15, and the kappa index of the distribution remains constant at ??=2.0±0.2. These observations agree with the predictions of the exospheric theory.  相似文献

High rate sampling detectors measuring the potential difference between the main body and boom antennas of interplanetary spacecraft have been shown to be efficient means to measure the voltage pulses induced by nano dust impacts on the spacecraft body itself (see Meyer-Vernet et al. in Sol. Phys. 256:463, 2009). However, rough estimates of the free charge liberated in post impact expanding plasma cloud indicate that the cloud’s own internal electrostatic field is too weak to account for measured pulses as the ones from the TDS instrument on the STEREO spacecraft frequently exceeding 0.1 V/m. In this paper we argue that the detected pulses are not a direct measure of the potential structure of the plasma cloud, but are rather the consequence of a transitional interruption of the photoelectron return current towards the portion of the antenna located within the expanding cloud.  相似文献

We present new in situ measurements of solar wind electron density as a function of heliolatitude. The data were obtained on Ulysses during its fast transit from south solar pole to north solar pole, at heliocentric distance about 1.5 AU, near the 1996 solar activity minimum. The density is measured accurately using the method of quasi-thermal noise spectroscopy with the Ulysses radio experiment, at a higher time resolution than the particle analysers on board. At low heliolatitudes (22° S to 21° N) the histogram of our data shows three main classes of flows with densities centered at 3.5, 7, and 12 cm-3, close to the values previously found by near-ecliptic space probes, in the region where fast coronal hole wind alternates with slower streamer belt wind. Poleward of 22° latitude where Ulysses encountered fast wind coming from coronal holes, the histogram of our data shows a single class of flow centered at 2.9 cm-3 with a roughly normal distribution. We find a density nearly independent of latitude, with the mean density from the south coronal hole 10% larger than that from the north, which may stem from a genuine north/south asymmetry and/or from the small decrease in solar activity during the time of the observations. We finally compare the data with some analytical models.  相似文献

High speed dust streams emanating from near Jupiter were first discovered by the Ulysses spacecraft in 1992. Since then the phenomenon has been re-observed by Galileo in 1995, Cassini in 2000, and Ulysses in 2004. The dust grains are expected to be charged to a potential of , which is sufficient to allow the planet's magnetic field to accelerate them away from the planet, where they are subsequently influenced by the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). A similar phenomenon was observed near Saturn by Cassini. Here, we report and analyze simultaneous dust, IMF and solar wind data for all dust streams from the two Ulysses Jupiter flybys. We find that compression regions (CRs) in the IMF – regions of enhanced magnetic field – precede most dust streams. Furthermore, the duration of a dust stream is roughly comparable with that of the precedent CR, and the occurrence of a dust stream and the occurrence of the previous CR are separated by a time interval that depends on the distance to Jupiter. The intensity of the dust streams and their precedent CRs are also correlated, but this correlation is only evident at distances from the planet no greater than 2 AU. Combining these observations, we argue that CRs strongly affect dust streams, probably by deflecting dust grain trajectories, so that they can reach the spacecraft and be detected by its dust sensor.  相似文献

The question of determining the relative velocity of the local interstellar medium (LISM) based on direct interstellar helium flux measurements in the Solar system is considered. Such measurements were made onboard the Ulysses spacecraft in 1990–2007 at a distance of 2–5 AU from the Sun and have been made from 2009 to the present day onboard the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) spacecraft at the Earth’s orbit. Recent works on analyzing the IBEX measurements have shown that the LISM velocity relative to the Sun determined from the IBEX data differs in magnitude (by ≈3 km s?1) and direction (by ≈4°) from the LISM velocity obtained previously by Witte based on Ulysses measurements. We have modeled the Ulysses data (including the 2007 data that have not been considered previously by anybody) by taking into account various LISM velocity vectors and compare our numerical simulations with experimental data. The LISM velocity vector derived from the IBEX data is shown to contradict the Ulysses data in the position of the measured interstellar helium flux maximum on the sky map. In addition, the position of the flux maximum is shown to be determined exclusively by the LISM velocity vector and to be independent of other model parameters (the LISM temperature and ionization rate). This means that the Ulysses data (including the 2007 data obtained only two years before the IBEX measurements) cannot be explained in terms of the existing models with the LISM velocity vector from the IBEX data. Possible reasons for the detected contradictions are discussed.  相似文献

The extremely energetic ( approximately 10-4 ergs cm-2) gamma-ray burst (GRB) of 1999 December 8 was triangulated to an approximately 14 arcmin2 error box approximately 1.8 days after its arrival at Earth with the third interplanetary network (IPN), which consists of the Ulysses, Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous, and Wind spacecraft. Radio observations with the Very Large Array approximately 2.7 days after the burst revealed a bright fading counterpart whose position is consistent with that of an optical transient source with a redshift of 0.707. We present the time history, peak flux, fluence, and refined 1.3 arcmin2 error box of this event and discuss its energetics. This is the first time that a counterpart has been found for a GRB localized only by the IPN.  相似文献

Basic properties of quasi-thermal noise spectrum in irregular plasma have been investigated using an analytical point of view. A simple formula for the plasma frequency splitting effect has been obtained for ionospheric conditions. A passive electric antenna, immersed in a stable plasma, detects the fluctuations of the electric potential due to thermal motion of the ambient particles. Properties of this quasi-thermal noise spectrum in homogeneous plasma are relatively well known and are effectively used for diagnostics of space plasma (Aksenov et al., 1978; Trakhtengerts and Chugunov, 1978; Kellog, 1981; Meyer-Vernet and Perche, 1989). Especially, in the Earth's ionosphere or solar wind plasma, random irregularities of electron density are always present. These irregularities may substantially change properties of these media through electromagnetic radiation and may also modify quasi-thermal noise spectrum, which depends on the effective dielectric permittivity tensor. This tensor is defined as the dielectric permittivity tensor of some imaginary `effective' regular medium in which the field of point source is the same as the mean field in the medium with random irregularities (Ryzhov, Tamoikin and Tatarskii, 1965; Ryzhov 1968). Since the correlation function of electric field fluctuations in random medium may be expressed through the effective dielectric constant tensor (Ryzhov, 1968), it may be used for direct calculation of quasi-thermal noise spectrum. In Zabotin et al. (2000), the Born approximation was used to calculate numerically the effective dielectric permittivity tensor and the modified noise spectrum while we analytically estimate herein the modified noise spectrum. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present the experimental verification of existing theoretical models of emission mechanisms of solar type III bursts at the second harmonic of the plasma frequency, pe . This study is based on the detection of Langmuir and envelope solitons by the Ulysses spacecraft inside three type III burst source regions. We show that the oscillating-two-stream instability, coherent radiation by Langmuir solitons and stochastic phase mixing of the Langmuir waves in the strong turbulence regime are the appropriate emission mechanisms at 2 pe .  相似文献

The occurrence of a nonlinear turbulent energy cascade in solar wind plasma has been recently established through the observation of an exact law from spacecraft measurements. The main results obtained in the fast, polar wind measured by Ulysses spacecraft are reviewed here. In particular, the turbulent cascade is seen as the mean to provide the energy necessary for the local heating in the non-adiabatic expansion of the solar wind. The importance of the density fluctuations in enhancing the turbulent energy transport is also evidenced. The ecliptic wind data measured by Ulysses are studied here in the same framework. This has been done by separating fast and slow streams, in order to avoid mixing of different physical conditions. The results further support the need for separate analysis of the two types of wind.  相似文献

This paper presents an overview of a number of the principal findings regarding the hot plasmas (E 50 keV) in Jupiter's magnetosphere by the HISCALE instrument during the encounter of the Ulysses spacecraft with the planet in February 1992. The hot plasma ion fluxes measured by HI-SCALE in the dayside magnetosphere are similar to those measured in the same energy range in this region by the Voyager spacecraft in 1979. Within the dayside plasma sheet, the hot-ion energy densities are comparable with, or larger than, the magnetic field energy densities; these hot ions are found to corotate at about one-half the planetary corotational speed. For ions of energies 500 keV/nucleon, the protons contributed from 50–60% to as much as 80% of the energy content of these plasmas. Strong, magnetic-field-aligned streaming was found for both the ions and electrons in the high-latitude duskside magnetosphere. The ion and electron pitch-angle distributions could be characterized by cos25 α throughout many of the high anisotropy intervals of the outbound pass. There is some evidence in the ion pitch-angle distributions for a corotational component in the hot plasmas at high Jovian latitudes. While there are limitations owing to the finite geometries of the detector telescope systems on the determination of the angular spreads of the ion and electron beams, the measurements show that there are intervals when the particle distributions are not bidirectional. At such times, locally the hot plasmas could be carrying currents of 10−4μAm−2. The temporal variations in the streaming electron fluxes are substantially larger than the variations measured for the fluxes that are more locally mirroring. The temporal variations contain periodicities that may correspond to hydromagnetic wave frequencies in the magnetosphere as well as to larger scale motions of magnetospheric plasmas. On nearly half of the days for about a 130 day interval around the time of the Ulysses encounter with the planet, particles of Jovian origin were measured in the interplanetary medium. An event discussed herein shows evidence of an energy dependence of the particle release process from the planetary magnetosphere into the interplanetary medium.  相似文献

We predict the amount of cometary, interplanetary, and interstellar cosmic dust that is to be measured by the Cometary and Interstellar Dust Analyzer (CIDA) and the aerogel collector on board the Stardust spacecraft during its fly-by of comet P⧸Wild 2 and during the interplanetary cruise phase. We give the dust flux on the spacecraft during the encounter with the comet using both, a radially symmetric and an axially symmetric coma model. At closest approach, we predict a total dust flux of 1060 m−2 s−1 for the radially symmetric case and 1065 m−2 s−1 for the axially symmetric case. This prediction is based on an observation of the comet at a heliocentric distance of 1.7 AU. We reproduce the measurements of the Giotto and VEGA missions to comet P⧸Halley using the same model as for the Stardust predictions. The planned measurements of interstellar dust by Stardust have been triggered by the discovery of interstellar dust impacts in the data collected by the Ulysses and Galileo dust detector. Using the Ulysses and Galileo measurements we predict that 25 interstellar particles, mainly with masses of about 10−12 g, will hit the target of the CIDA experiment. The interstellar side of the aerogel collector will contain 120 interstellar particles, 40 of which with sizes greater than 1 μm. Furthermore, we investigate the contamination of the CIDA and collector measurements by interplanetary particles during the cruise phase.  相似文献

A double discontinuity is a rarely observed compound structure composed of a slow shock layer and an adjoining rotational discontinuity layer in the downstream region. In this paper, we report the observations of a double discontinuity detected by Wind on May 15, 1997. This double discontinuity is found to be the front boundary of a magnetic cloud boundary layer. We strictly identify the shock layer and the rotational discontinuity layer by using the high-resolution plasma and magnetic field data from Wind. The observed jump conditions of the upstream and downstream region of the slow shock layer are in good agreement with the Rankine – Hugoniot relations. The flow speeds in the shock frame U n <V Acos θ Bn on both sides of the slow shock layer. In the upstream region, the slow Mach number M s1=U n1/V s1 is 1.95 (above unity), and in the downstream region, the slow Mach number M s2=U n2/V s2 is 0.31 (below unity). Here V A and V s represent the Alfvén speed and the local slow magnetosonic speed, respectively, and θ Bn is the angle between the direction of the magnetic field and the shock normal. The magnetic cloud boundary layer observed by Wind was also detected by Geotail 48 min later when the spacecraft was located outside the bow shock of the magnetosphere. However, Geotail observations showed that its front boundary was no longer a double discontinuity and the rotational discontinuity layer disappeared, indicating that this double discontinuity was unstable when propagating from Wind to Geotail.  相似文献

We extrapolate solar-wind bulk velocity measurements for different in-ecliptic heliospheric positions by calculating the theoretical time lag between the locations. The solar-wind bulk velocity dataset is obtained from in-situ plasma measurements by STEREO A and B, SOHO, Venus Express, and Mars Express. During their simultaneous measurements between 2007 and 2009 we find typical solar activity minimum conditions. In order to validate our extrapolations of the STEREO A and B data, we compare them with simultaneous in-situ observations from the other spacecraft. This way of cross-calibration we obtain a measure for the goodness of our extrapolations over different heliospheric distances. We find that a reliable solar-wind dataset can be provided in case of a longitudinal separation less than 65 degrees. Moreover, we find that the time lag method assuming constant velocity is a good basis to extrapolate from measurements in Earth orbit to Venus or to Mars. These extrapolations might serve as a good solar-wind input information for planetary studies of magnetospheric and ionospheric processes. We additionally show how the stream-stream interactions in the ecliptic alter the bulk velocity during radial propagation.  相似文献

The Bent Crystal Spectrometer (BCS) onboard the NASA Solar Maximum Mission was part of the X-ray Polychromator, which observed numerous flares and bright active regions from February to November 1980, when operation was suspended as a result of the failure of the spacecraft fine-pointing system. Observations resumed following the Space Shuttle SMM Repair Mission in April 1984 and continued until November 1989. BCS spectra have been widely used in the past to obtain temperatures, emission measures, and turbulent and bulk flows during flares, as well as element abundances. Instrumental details including calibration factors not previously published are given here, and the in-orbit performance of the BCS is evaluated. Some significant changes during the mission are described, and recommendations for future instrumentation are made. Using improved estimates for the instrument parameters and operational limits, it is now possible to obtain de-convolved calibrated spectra that show finer detail than before, providing the means for improved interpretation of the physics of the emitting plasmas. The results indicate how historical archived data can be re-used to obtain enhanced and new, scientifically valuable results.  相似文献

Comparing the records of the radio spectrographs ARTEMIS (100–500 MHz) on the ground and URAP (1–1000 kHz) on the Ulysses spacecraft, we find that most type III bursts extend from the corona to the solar wind. Using the positions of the associated flares, and assuming an average intensity ratio between these two frequency ranges, we derive for the first time the average radiation pattern of interplanetary type III bursts. We find that at 800 kHz it is shifted east of the radial direction by 30° and has a half-width of about 80° at maximum/10; the shift and width increase towards lower frequencies. Ulysses high-latitude observations show that the cross-section perpendicular to the heliospheric equator is about the same. We interpret these properties by refraction effects in local density gradients.  相似文献

New measurements using radio and plasma-wave instruments in interplanetary space have shown that nanometer-scale dust, or nanodust, is a significant contributor to the total mass in interplanetary space. Better measurements of nanodust will allow us to determine where it comes from and the extent to which it interacts with the solar wind. When one of these nanodust grains impacts a spacecraft, it creates an expanding plasma cloud, which perturbs the photoelectron currents. This leads to a voltage pulse between the spacecraft body and the antenna. Nanodust has a high charge/mass ratio, and therefore can be accelerated by the interplanetary magnetic field to the speed of the solar wind: significantly faster than the Keplerian orbital speeds of heavier dust. The amplitude of the signal induced by a dust grain grows much more strongly with speed than with mass of the dust particle. As a result, nanodust can produce a strong signal despite its low mass. The WAVES instruments on the twin Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory spacecraft have observed interplanetary nanodust particles since shortly after their launch in 2006. After describing a new and improved analysis of the last five years of STEREO/WAVES Low Frequency Receiver data, we present a statistical survey of the nanodust characteristics, namely the rise time of the pulse voltage and the flux of nanodust. We show that previous measurements and interplanetary dust models agree with this survey. The temporal variations of the nanodust flux are also discussed.  相似文献

The Ulysses spacecraft is orbiting the Sun on a highly inclined ellipse (i = 79°). After its Jupiter flyby in 1992 at a heliocentric distance of 5.4 AU, the spacecraftreapproached the inner solar system, flew over the Suns south polar region in September 1994,crossed the ecliptic plane at a distance of 1.3 AU in March 1995, and flew over the Suns northpolar region in July 1995. We report on dust impact data obtained with the dust detector onboardUlysses between January 1993 and December 1995. We publish and analyse the complete dataset of 509 recorded impacts of dust particles with masses between 10−16 g–10−7 g. Together with 968 dust impacts from launch until the end of 1992 published earlier (Grün et al., 1995c), information about 1477 particles detected with theUlysses sensor between October 1990 and December 1995 is now available. The impact ratemeasured between 1993 and 1995 stayed relatively constant at about 0.4 impacts per day andvaried by less than a factor of ten. Most of the impacts recorded outside about 3.5 AU arecompatible with particles of interstellar origin. Two populations of interplanetary particles havebeen recognized: big micrometer-sized particles close to the ecliptic plane and smallsub-micrometer-sized particles at high ecliptic latitudes. The observed impact rate is comparedwith a model for the flux of interstellar dust particles which gives relatively good agreement withthe observed impact rate. No change in the instruments noise characteristics or degradation of thechanneltron could be revealed during the three-year period.  相似文献

We present the solar wind plasma parameters obtained from the Ulysses spacecraft during its second pole-to-pole fast latitude scan near the 2001 solar maximum. We study the solar wind properties from the electron density and core temperature measurements made by the radio receiver on Ulysses using the method of quasi-thermal noise spectroscopy. We analyze these parameters as functions of heliographic latitude and distance. We present their histograms normalized to 1 AU and find a bimodal distribution for the electron core temperature. The cooler population can be associated with the fast wind flow emanating from coronal holes present at various latitudes. We discuss a slight north/south asymmetry found for the electron density. Finally, we compare the present results to those obtained during the 1996 solar minimum and 1991 solar maximum.  相似文献

The reduced magnetic helicity is a quantity related to the handedness of the magnetic field fluctuations. In the present paper we study the scaling law of the reduced magnetic helicity in fast streams in the solar wind by using high-resolution magnetic field data by the Ulysses spacecraft. We show that at high frequencies both the left-hand and the right-hand helicity survives, implying that there is no predominance of a single sign. In addition, the scaling law of the magnetic helicity exhibits a strong dependence on the data set analyzed and we do not observe any universal behavior.  相似文献

A well-known method for studying the solar wind very close to the Sun (heliocentric distances: 4 to 40 solar radii) is by radio sounding between a spacecraft at superior conjunction and the Earth. The Ulysses Solar Corona Experiment was performed at the spacecraft's two solar conjunctions in summer 1991 and winter 1995, during which dual-frequency ranging and Doppler observations were conducted globally on a nearly continuous basis at the NASA Deep Space Network and other ground stations. The dual-frequency Doppler measurements were used to determine coronal plasma velocities by a cross-correlation analysis during those occasions when tracking data were recorded simultaneously at two well-separated ground stations. A filtering technique was developed to suppress noise and enhance the 2-station correlations, a procedure particularly effective at small solar offsets. From the electron content measurements during the two solar conjunctions it was found that regions of higher electron density tend to occur when the two-station correlations yield slower outward flow velocities.  相似文献
