This paper discusses formation of pathological cases of crater morphology due to interaction of craters with molten lavas. Terrestrial observations of such a process are discussed. In lunar maria, a number of small impact craters (D < 10 km) may have been covered by thin layers of fluid lavas, or formed in molten lava. Some specific lunar examples are discussed, including unusual shallow rings resembling experimental craters deformed by isostatic filling.Paper dedicated to Professor Harold C. The anomalously high number of craters with diameter less than 2.8 km, the igneous nature of rocks from the Apollo landing sites, and the possibility of outgassing magmas in the lunar crust, suggest that fluidization may be a viable mechanism for producing many of the smaller lunar craters, Fluidization craters were formed in the laboratory by blowing gas through various thicknesses of particulate material. Gas pressure, regolith thickness, and the duration of gas streaming were controlled over practical experimental limits and compared with the resultant crater morphology. Low to moderate fluidization pressures on coarsely crushed limestone (Mø = 0.40, So = =0.50) with low cohesion (ø - 43°) produced bowl shaped, basin shaped, and flat bottomed craters. Bowl shaped craters change into basin shaped and/or flat bottomed craters with long durations of gas streaming. Cone, funnel, and flat-funnel shaped craters are indicative of high fluidization pressures. Craters formed in finely crushed limestone (Mø - 1.55, So - 0.85) that is electrostatically charged by the streaming gas, are flat bottomed. Terraced craters develop from slumping during and after the discontinuation of gas flow. Central mounds inn terraced craters result from slumping into a confined space. In particulate material, fluidization craters have high circularity and axial symmetry, similar to those produced by impact. The use of an impact model and crater morphology (normal, flat bottomed, and concentric) for estimating lunar regolith depth is questioned because similar craters can be produced by fluidizationn processes in a thicker regolith.On leave at the Earth Physics Branch, Dept. of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada.  相似文献

In addition to modes of formation offered by previous investigators, terrestrial drainage craters formed over lava tubes in Oregon are presented as analogs to lunar drainage craters. Craters associated with lava tubes result from: (1) drainage of surface material through roof fractures; (2) plastic collapse of the partially cooled lava tube roof; and (3) drainage of surface material into roof collapses. The former two categories result in shallow, often elongate craters; the latter category forms classic dimple shaped craters. Elongate dimple craters formed over volcanic fissures in southern Idaho are also discussed and presented in support of one mode of formation proposed by previous investigators for lunar drainage craters.Movement of surface material toward the orifice is initiated on Earth largely by wind and water; in lunar conditions, initial movement is attributed to micro- and macro-meteoritic bombardment, seismic disturbances generated by internal and external processes, and by thermal creep.Nat. The general conception of the critical inclinations and eccentricities for theN-planet problem is introduced. The connection of this conception with the existence and stability of particular solutions is established. In the restricted circular problem of three bodies the existence of the critical inclinations is proved for any values of the ratio of semiaxes . The asymptotic behaviour of the critical inclinations as 1 is investigated.

Some en echelon structures, tension gashes and compressional ridges may form similar patterns. The N-S compression activates diagonal conjugate zones of weakness with tension gashes in the vicinity of the compressional direction. In the case of E-W compression similar arrangements of en echelon compression ridges are generated.The global N-S compression existing at the time of fracturing of the lava-flooded Oceanus Procellarum basin is arguable. It is possible to interpret some different scale mare ridge arrangements as en echelon within en echelon structures. Major ridge ranges evidently have Riedel and opposite Riedel orientations and they consist of minor en echelon structures which may in places be intruded tension gashes but are evidently mostly sheared and compressed Riedel fractures.The en echelon withinen echelon structures of mare ridges manifest the significance of different scale strike-slip movements along the lithosphere zones of weakness indicated by present mare ridge zones. The orientation of these Riedel-fracture-like en echelon structures also points to the existence of an areal compression during shearings along the zones of weakness. The Oceanus Procellarum basin sinking caused by lava loadings and lunar internal cooling led to the lithosphere shortening and to compressional circumstances. The angle between proposed Riedel structures and the mare ridge zones varies within this area, possibly indicating differences in compression and shearing in distinct parts of the shortened basin lithosphere.  相似文献

In this paper we introduce a new parameter, the shear angle of vector magnetic fields, , to describe the non-potentiality of magnetic fields in active regions, which is defined as the angle between the observed vector magnetic field and its corresponding current-free field. In the case of highly inclined field configurations, this angle is approximately equal to the angular shear, , defined by Hagyardet al. (1984). The angular shear, , can be considered as the projection of the shear angle, , on the photosphere. For the active region studied, the shear angle, , seems to have a better and neater correspondence with flare activity than does . The shear angle, , gives a clearer explanation of the non-potentiality of magnetic fields. It is a better measure of the deviation of the observed magnetic field from a potential field, and is directly related to the magnetic free energy stored in non-potential fields.  相似文献

Several of the exotic supernova remnants are re-interpreted as pulsar-illuminated former windzones. The class of supernova remnants thus splits into (i) (the usual) shell remnants and (ii) pulsar nebulae in which a (fairly young) pulsar blows its relativistic wind into its low-density environs.  相似文献

Analytic structure of high-density steady isothermal spheres is discussed using the TOV equation of hydrostatic equilibrium which satisfies an equation of state of the kind:P = K g , = g c 2.Approximate analytical solutions to the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations of hydrostatic equilibrium in (, ), (,U) and (u, v) phase planes in concise and simple form useful for short computer programmes or on small calculator, have been given. In Figures 1, 2, and 3, respectively, we display the qualitative behaviours of the ratio of gas density g to the central density gc , g / gc ; pressureP to the gc ,P/ gc ; and the metric componente , for three representative general relativistic (GR) isothermal configurations =0.1, 0.2, and 0.3. Figure 4 shows the solution curve (, ) for =0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 (=0 represents the classical (Newtonian) curve). Numerical values of physical quantitiesv (=4r 2 P *(r)), in steps ofu (=M(r)/r)=0.03, and the mass functionU, in steps of =0.2 (dimensionless radial distance), are given, respectively, in Tables I and II. Other interesting features of the configurations, such as ratio of gravitational radius 2GM/c 2 to the coordinate radiusR, mass distributionM(r)/M, pressure (or density) distributionP/P c , binding energy (B.E.), etc., have also been incorporated in the text. The data set of Grieve which provides diameters and ages of craters is analyzed to obtain periodicity of the formation rate and decay constant of craters. It is confirmed that large craters (D 10 km) do not exhibit any periodicity while small ones appear to satisfy the Broadbent criterion for quantum (periodicity) hypothesis at P 29.5 myr. The result is consistent with a recent study of Bailey who showed that large craters are largely due to asteroids. Allowing for the decay of craters, an excess of 4 small craters within the nearest past is detected. In this sense, one may argue that the solar system is now in a moderate comet shower.  相似文献

We propose that the coronal source longitude and latitude of solar wind plasma can be estimated within 10°. Previous writers have argued that the solar wind in the ecliptic should originate near the equator and that a quasi-radial hypervelocity (QRH) approximation (constant radial flow) is valid beyond the magnetohydrodynamic critical points. We demonstrate that an extension of the QRH approximation (as if the solar wind flowed radially with constant velocity from the center of the Sun) yields a proper estimate of the high coronal source location at the release zone where the solar wind makes its transition to radial interplanetary flow. This extrapolated QRH (or EQRH) approximation succeeds because the two main corrections to this source estimate, coronal corotation and interplanetary acceleration, tend to cancel (the former correcting the source location eastward, the latter westward). Although this ideal spiral approximation was first suggested by Snyder and Neugebauer (1966), only recently has it been demonstrated that it relates a wide range of interplanetary plasma, magnetic field and energetic particle data to observed coronal magnetic structure. We estimate quantitatively the error in the EQRH approximation by comparison with steady-state streamlines predicted by azimuthally independent and dependent theoretical solutions to the steady-state plasma equations. We find the error in both cases 10° in longitude and therefore suggest that the EQRH approximation offers the means to relate observed solar initial conditions in the release zone directly to interplanetary measurements. If, in addition, the EQRH approximation also leads to agreement with low coronal structure, then there should be a straightforward correspondence to otherwise unobservable high coronal structure.  相似文献

Some peculiarities in the behaviour of a model self-gravitating system described by hydrodynamical equations and isothermal equation of state connected with the presence of thermodynamical fluctuations in real systems were investigated in numerical experiment. The values of density and velocity , , respectively, were computed by numerical code perturbed on each time-step and in each computational cell by random values , for modeling such fluctuations. Perturbed values i = i + i ,v i = i + v i were used to initiate the next step of computations. This procedure is equivalent to an introduction into original hydrodynamical equations of Langevin sources which are random functions. It is shown that these small fluctuations (= v =0,2 =v 2 = 10–8) grow many times in marginally-stable state.  相似文献

The Marius Hills region, a volcanic plateau in Oceanus Procellarum, contains numerous rilles, rille-like structures, and chains of elongate craters. Most of these structures characteristically: (1) originate on or near irregular shaped craters associated with features previously interpreted as volcanic domes, (2) trend downslope onto Plateau Plains, (3) generally taper in width and become shallower, (4) are often discountinuous, (5) occupy the center, or apparent crest of a broad ridge, (6) may contain cut-off branches and distributary structures, and (7) may have local reversals in longitudinal slope. Structures having these characteristics are interpreted to be lava channels or partly collapsed lava tubes. Terrestrial lava tubes form exclusively, and commonly, in fluid basalt flows. Recent evidence indicates that viscosities of lunar mare basalt lava flows were conducive for lava tube formation.Terrestrial analogs are offered for structures described in the Marius Hills. The analogs are comparable in qualitative and quantitative geomorphic aspects, excluding that of width. Scaling consideration of lunar reduced gravity accounts for increased width of the lunar structures. Linear and curvilinear rilles trending along equal elevations are interpreted to result from fracturing or faulting.  相似文献

We determine the momentum distribution of the relativistic particles near the Crab pulsar from the observed X- and -ray spectra (103109 eV), provided that the curvature radiation is responsible for it. The power law spectrum for the relativistic electrons,f() –5, reproduces a close fit to the observed high-energy photon spectrum. The theoretically determined upper limit to the momentum (due to radiation damping), M 8×106, corresponds to the upper cut-off energy of the -ray spectrum, 109 eV. The lower limit to the momentum, m 1.8×105, is chosen such that flattening of the X-ray spectrum below 10 keV is simulated. The number density of these electrons is found to be much higher than the Goldreich-Julian density. We also discuss pulse shape and polarization of high-energy photons. The extremely high density of particles and the steep momentum spectrum are difficult to understand. This may imply that another, more efficient, mechanism is in operation.  相似文献

We describe initial results of a program to image massive newly-formed stars with sub-arc second spatial resolution. We discuss high-precision diffraction-limited size measurements at =10 m made using the 3 m Lick telescope. The point-spread function has FWHM 0.7; deconvolution yields a spatial resolution of 0.35. We find that the core component of one such object, LkH 101, is unresolved at these scales, and we are able to set a 95%-confidence upper limit of 270 AU for the diameter of the circumstellar dust shell. This places the dust at the same radial scale as a strong ionized stellar wind region seen at radio wavelengths. Our observations, when combined with published spectral observations, rule out an optically thick circumstellar disk but allow a radially thin, anisotropic distribution of dust, or alternatively an isotropic distribution of dust with a narrow range of large grain sizes.  相似文献

We have analysed MgH A 2 -X 2(0.0), (1.1), (2.2), (0.1) and (1.2) absorption bands in a sunspot spectrum. By two different methods, which are almost independent of the estimated value of the correction for stray light, we have determined the solar isotopic ratios of magnesium. These ratios are equal to the terrestrial ones - 24Mg25Mg26Mg = 801010.  相似文献

Numerical simulations of the evolution of planets or massive satellites captured in the 2/1 and 3/1 resonances, under the action of an anti-dissipative tidal force. The evolution of resonant trapped bodies show a richness of solutions: librations around stationary symmetric solutions with aligned periapses ( = 0) or anti-aligned periapses ( = ), librations around stationary asymmetric solutions in which the periapses configuration is fixed, but with taking values in a wide range of angles. Many of these solutions exist for large values of the eccentricities and, during the semimajor axes drift, the solutions show turnabouts from one configuration to another. The presented results are valid for other non-conservative anti-dissipative forces leading to adiabatic convergent migration and capture into one of these resonances.  相似文献
