Magnesium Isotope Compositions of Natural Reference Materials   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study presents a chemical protocol for the separation of Mg that is particularly adapted to alkali‐rich samples (granite, soil, plants). This protocol was based on a combination of two pre‐existing methods: transition metals were first removed from the sample using an AG‐MP1 anion‐exchange resin, followed by the separation of alkalis (Na, K) and bivalent cations (Ca2+, Mn2+ and Sr2+) using a AG50W‐X12 cation‐exchange resin. This procedure allowed Mg recovery of ~ 10 0 ± 8%. The [Σcations]/[Mg] molar ratios in all of the final Mg fractions were lower than 0.05. The Mg isotope ratios of eleven reference materials were analysed using two different MC‐ICP‐MS instruments (Isoprobe and Nu Plasma). The long‐term reproducibility, assessed by repeated measurements of Mg standard solutions and natural reference materials, was 0.14‰. The basalt (BE‐N), limestone (Cal‐S) and seawater (BCR‐403) reference materials analysed in this study yielded δ26Mg mean values of ?0.28 ± 0.08‰, ?4.37 ± 0.11‰ and ?0.89 ± 0.10‰ respectively, in agreement with published data. The two continental rocks analysed, diorite (DR‐N) and granite (GA), yielded δ26Mg mean values of ?0.50 ± 0.08‰ and ?0.75 ± 0.14‰, respectively. The weathering products, soil (TILL‐1) and river water (NIST SRM 1640), gave δ26Mg values of ?0.40 ± 0.07‰ and ?1.27 ± 0.14‰, respectively. We also present, for the first time, the Mg isotope composition of bulk plant and organic matter. Rye flour (BCR‐381), sea lettuce (Ulva lactuva) (BCR‐279), natural hairgrass (Deschampsia flexuosa) and lichen (BCR‐482) reference materials gave δ26Mg values of ?1.10 ± 0.14‰, ?0.90 ± 0.19‰, ?0.50 ± 0.22‰ and ?1.15 ± 0.27‰ respectively. Plant δ26Mg values fell within the range defined by published data for chlorophylls.  相似文献

In this study we determined rubidium isotope ratios in twenty-one commonly used international geological reference materials, including igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, as well as an IAPSO seawater reference material. All δ87Rb results were obtained relative to the NIST SRM 984 reference material. For most reference materials, Rb was purified using a single column loaded with Sr-spec resin. For reference materials containing low Rb but high mass fractions of matrix elements (such as basic rock and seawater), Rb was purified using two-column chromatography, with the first column packed with AGMP-50 resin and the second column packed with Sr-spec resin. Two methods for instrumental mass bias correction, sample-standard bracketing (SSB) mode, and the combined sample-standard bracketing and Zr internal normalisation (C-SSBIN) method, were compared for Rb isotopic measurements by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). The long-term reproducibility of Rb isotopic measurements using both methods was similar, better than 0.06‰ (2s, standard deviation) for NIST SRM 984. Significant Rb isotopic fractionation was observed among the reference materials, with an overall variation in δ87Rb values of approximately 0.5‰. The δ87Rb values of igneous rocks ranged from -0.28‰ to +0.06‰, showing a trend from heavier isotopic compositions in mafic rocks to lighter δ87Rb values in the more evolved felsic rocks. The sedimentary and metamorphic rocks had Rb isotope ratios similar to those of igneous rocks. The δ87Rb values of the reference materials related to low-temperature geological processes showed a wider range than those of high-temperature processes. Notably, the IAPSO seawater reference material had a δ87Rb value of +0.14‰, which deviated from that of igneous rocks, and represents the heaviest reservoir of Rb isotopes found thus far on Earth. The comprehensive dataset presented here has the potential to serve for quality assurance purposes, and provide a framework for interlaboratory comparisons of Rb isotope ratios.  相似文献

Iron isotope compositions of suspended particulate matters (SPM) collected from the Aha Lake, an artificial lake in the karst area of Yun-Gui Plateau, and its tributaries in summer and winter were investigated for our understanding of the behavior of Fe isotopes during iron biogeochemical cycling in lake. δ56Fe values of SPM display statistically negative shift relative to IRMM-014. Samples from the lake display a range from ?1.36‰ to ?0.10‰ in summer and from ?0.30‰ to ?0.07‰ in winter, while river samples vary from ?0.88‰ to 0.07‰ in summer and from ?0.35‰ to ?0.03‰ in winter. The average iron isotope composition of aerosol samples is + 0.10‰, which is very similar to that of igneous rocks (0.09‰). The SPM in most rivers and water column showed seasonal variation in δ56Fe value: the δ56Fe values of SPM in summer were lower than in winter. The seasonal variation in δ56Fe value of the riverine SPM should be ascribed to the change in source of particulate Fe and geochemical process in the watershed: More particulate Fe was leached from soil and produced by weathering of pyrite widely distributed in coal-containing strata. It is suggested that both allochthonous inputs and the redox iron cycling control the variations of δ56Fe values for SPM in lake.During summer stratification, an Fe cycle named “ferrous wheel” is established near the redox boundary where the upwardly diffusing Fe(II) is oxidized and the reactive Fe oxides formed will continuously sink back into the reduction zone to complete the cycle. The δ56Fe values for SPM reach the minima, ?0.88‰ for DB station and ?1.36‰ for LJK station, just near the redox boundary as a result of the Fe cycling, where a rough 45% to 76% of Fe in these particles was produced by the repetitive cycle. Due to random transportation and diffusion, δ56Fe values of the particles near the redox zone distributed into approximately a Gaussian shape. The good negative correlation existed between δ56Fe values and Fe/Al ratios for DB station, suggesting that they together can be used as good indicators of the redox-driven Fe transformations.

The iron stable isotope compositions (δ56Fe) and iron valence states of ultrahigh‐pressure eclogites from Bixiling in the Dabie orogen belt, China, were measured to trace the changes of geochemical conditions during vertical transportation of earth materials, for example, oxygen fugacity. The bulk Fe3+/ΣFe ratios of retrograde eclogites, determined by Mössbauer spectroscopy, are consistently higher than those of fresh eclogites, suggesting oxidation during retrograde metamorphism and fluid infiltration. The studied eclogites (five samples) display limited mid‐ocean ridge basalts (MORB)‐like (~0.10‰) δ56Fe values, which are indistinguishable from their protoliths, that is, gabbro cumulates formed through differentiation of mantle‐derived basaltic magma. This suggests that Fe isotope fractionation during continental subduction is limited. Garnet separates display limited δ56Fe variation ranging from ?0.08 ± 0.07 ‰ to 0.02 ± 0.07‰, whereas coexisting omphacite displays a large variation of δ56Fe values from 0.15 ± 0.07‰ to 0.47 ± 0.07‰. Omphacite also has highly variable Fe3+/ΣFe ratios from 0.367 ± 0.025 to 0.598 ± 0.024, indicating modification after peak metamorphism. Omphacite from retrograde eclogites has elevated Fe3+/ΣFe ratios (0.54–0.60) compared to that from fresh eclogites (~0.37), whereas garnet displays a narrow range of ferric iron content with Fe3+/ΣFe ratios from 0.039 ± 0.013 to 0.065 ± 0.022. The homogenous δ56Fe values and Fe3+/ΣFe ratios of garnet suggest that it survived the retrograde metamorphism and preserved its Fe‐isotopic features and ferric contents of peak metamorphism. Because of similar diffusion rates of Fe and Mg in garnet and omphacite, and constant Δ26Mgomphacite‐garnet values (1.14 ± 0.04‰), equilibrium iron isotope fractionation between garnet and omphacite was probably achieved during peak metamorphism. Elevated Fe3+/ΣFe ratios of omphacite from retrograde eclogites and variant Δ56Feomphacite‐garnet values of the studied eclogites (0.13 ± 0.10‰ to 0.48 ± 0.10‰) indicate that oxidized geofluid infiltration resulted in the elevation of δ56Fe values of omphacite during retrograde metamorphism.  相似文献

In this study, a technique for high precision in situ Fe and Mg isotope determinations by femtosecond‐laser ablation‐multi collector‐ICP‐MS (fs‐LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS) was developed. This technique was employed to determine reference values for a series of common reference glasses that may be used for external standardisation of in situ Fe and Mg isotope determinations in silicates. The analysed glasses are part of the MPI‐DING and United States Geological Survey (USGS) reference glass series, consisting of basaltic (BIR‐1G, BCR‐2G, BHVO‐2G, KL2‐G, ML3B‐G) and komatiitic (GOR128‐G and GOR132‐G) compositions. Their Fe and Mg isotope compositions were determined by in situ fs‐LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS and by conventional solution nebulisation multi‐collector ICP‐MS. We determined δ56Fe values for these glasses ranging between ‐0.04‰ and 0.10‰ (relative to IRMM‐014) and δ26Mg values ranging between ‐0.40‰ and ‐0.15‰ (relative to DSM‐3). Our fs‐LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS results for both Fe and Mg isotope compositions agreed with solution nebulisation analyses within analytical uncertainties. Furthermore, the results of three USGS reference glasses (BIR‐1G, BHVO‐2G and BCR‐2G) agreed with previous results for powdered and dissolved aliquots of the same reference materials. Measurement reproducibilities of the in situ determinations of δ56Fe and δ26Mg values were usually better than 0.12‰ and 0.13‰ (2s), respectively. We further demonstrate that our technique is a suitable tool to resolve isotopic zoning in chemically‐zoned olivine crystals. It may be used for a variety of different applications on isotopically‐zoned minerals, e.g., in magmatic or metamorphic rocks or meteorites, to unravel their formation or cooling rates.  相似文献

Zhaxikang is one large Sb–Pb–Zn–Ag deposit located in the North Himalaya of southern Tibet. To date, the genesis of this deposit still remains controversial. Here, we present new pyrite Fe and sphalerite Zn isotopic data for the first three stages of mineralization, Fe–Zn isotopic data for Mn–Fe carbonate that formed during the first two stages of mineralization, and Zn isotopic data for the slate wall rocks of the Jurassic Ridang Formation to discuss the genesis of the Zhaxikang deposit. The overall δ56Fe and δ66Zn values range from −0.80‰ to 0.43‰ and from −0.03‰ to 0.38‰, respectively. The δ56Fe values of Mn–Fe carbonates are lighter than those of associated pyrite in six mineral pairs, indicating that the iron carbonates are preferentially enriched in light Fe isotopes relative to pyrite. The sphalerite has lighter δ66Zn values than associated Mn–Fe carbonates in three mineral pairs. The δ56Fe values of pyrite that formed during the first three stages of mineralization gradually increase from stage 1 (−0.33‰ to −0.09‰) through stage 2 (−0.30‰ to 0.19‰) to stage 3 (0.16‰–0.43‰). In comparison, the sphalerite that formed during these stages has δ66Zn values that gradually decrease from stage 1 (0.16‰–0.35‰) through stage 2 (0.09‰–0.23‰) to stage 3 (−0.03‰ to 0.22‰). These data, in conjunction with the observations of hand specimens and thin sections, suggest that the deposit was overprinted by a second pulse of mineralization. This overprint would account for these Fe–Zn isotopic variations as well as the kinetic Rayleigh fractionation that occurred during mineralization. The temporally increasing δ56Fe and decreasing δ66Zn values recorded in the deposit are also coincident with an increase in alteration, again supporting the existence of two pulses of mineralization. The δ56Fe values of the first pulse of ore-forming fluid were calculated using theoretical equations, yielding values of −0.54‰ to −0.34‰ that overlap with those of submarine hydrothermal solutions (−1‰ to 0‰). However, the δ56Fe values of the stage 3 pyrite are heavier than those of typical submarine hydrothermal solutions, which suggests that the second pulse of mineralization was probably derived from a magmatic hydrothermal fluid. In addition, the second pulse of ore-forming fluid has brought some Fe and taken away parts of Zn, which results the lighter δ66Zn values of sphalerite and heavier δ56Fe values of pyrite from the second pulse of mineralization. Overall, the Zhaxikang deposit records two pulses of mineralization, and the overprint by the second pulse of mineralization causes the lighter δ66Zn values and heavier δ56Fe values of modified samples.  相似文献

UV femtosecond laser ablation coupled to MC-ICP-MS provides a promising in situ tool to investigate elemental and isotope ratios by non-matrix-matched calibration. In this study, we investigate Fe isotope composition in siliceous matrices including biotite, hornblende, garnet, fayalite and forsterite (San Carlos Olivine), and an oceanic Fe–Mn crust using the iron reference material IRMM-014 for calibration. To test the accuracy of the laser ablation data, Fe isotope compositions were obtained independently by solution ICP-MS after chromatographic separation of Fe. Sample materials with low Cr content, i.e. biotite, hornblende, fayalite and the Fe–Mn crust, reveal δ56/54Fe and δ57/54Fe values that agree with those from solution ICP-MS data within the measured precision. For high Cr concentration (54Cr/54Fe >0.0001), i.e. in the garnet and forsterite sample, δ56/54Fe and δ57/54Fe values were derived from 57Fe/56Fe ratios as correction of the isobaric interference of 54Cr on 54Fe is unsatisfactory. This approach provides accurate results for both minerals. Moreover, the garnet crystal exhibits isotopic zonation with differences of 0.3‰ in δ56/54Fe showing that substantial heterogeneities exist in high-temperature metamorphic minerals. Multiple analyses of homogeneous sample materials reveal a repeatability of 0.1‰ (2 SD) for δ56/54Fe and 0.2‰ (2 SD) for δ57/54Fe, respectively. This study adds to the observations of Horn et al. (2006) who have shown that the determination of Fe isotope ratios in various matrices including iron alloys, iron oxides and hydroxides, iron sulfide and iron carbonates can be performed with high accuracy and precision at high spatial resolution using UV femtosecond laser ablation ICP-MS. These results demonstrate that femtosecond laser ablation ICP-MS is a largely matrix-independent method, which provides a substantial advantage over commonly employed nanosecond laser ablation systems.  相似文献

The first cold plasma ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer) Fe isotope study is described. Application of this technique to the analyses of Fe isotopes in a number of meteorites is also reported. The measurement technique relies on reduced temperature operation of the ICP source to eliminate pervasive molecular interferences from Ar complexes associated with conventional ICP-MS. Instrumental mass bias corrections are performed by sample-standard bracketing and using Cu as an external mass bias drift monitor. Repeated measurements of a terrestrial basalt reference sample indicate an external reproducibility of ± 0.06 ‰ for δ56Fe and ± 0.25 ‰ for δ58Fe (1 σ). The measured iron isotopic compositions of various bulk meteorites, including irons, chondrites and pallasites are identical, within error, to the composition of our terrestrial basalt reference sample suggesting that iron mass fractionation during planet formation and differentiation was non-existent. Iron isotope compositions measured for eight chondrules from the unequilibrated ordinary chondrite Tieschitz range from −0.5 ‰ < δ56Fechondrules < 0.0 ‰ relative to the terrestrial/meteorite average. Mechanisms for fractionating iron in these chondrules are discussed.  相似文献

To better understand the Fe isotope characteristics of natural samples in the Karst area, the Fe isotope compositions of riverine suspended particulates, lake suspended particulates, lake sediments, porewaters, phytoplanktons, and aerosols in the watersheds of Lake Aha (a mineralized water system) and Lake Hongfeng (a mesotrophic water system), which are located in the Karst area, southwest China, were investigated. The studied samples displayed a variable range between δ56Fe=?2.03‰ and 0.36‰. Aerosols and phytoplanktons have similar or slightly heavier Fe isotope compositions relative to the average of igneous rocks. Fe isotope compositions of riverine Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) were mainly affected by the types of tributaries. Suspended particulates collected from tributaries seriously contaminated with coal mine drainages displayed negative δ56Fe values (?0.89‰ to ?0.31‰) during summer, and there were significant increases of δ56Fe values in winter, except AR2, which was polluted with both coal mine drainage and sewage effluent. Characteristics of lakes have important influences on Fe isotope compositions of suspended particulates, lake sediments, and porewaters. The epilimnetic particulate Fe of Lake Hongfeng had δ56Fe=?0.04‰ to 0.13‰, while lighter Fe isotope compositions were measured for particulate Fe from Lake Aha, ranging from ?0.42‰ to ?0.09‰. Sediments collected from Hou Wu (HW) station of Lake Hongfeng have an average δ56Fe value of 0.09‰ and their corresponding porewaters have lighter Fe isotope compositions, ranging from ?0.57‰ to ?0.31‰; no significant variations have been observed. For the Liang Jiang Kou (LJK) station of Lake Aha, the content of reactive Fe and the concentration of sulfate were all high. Due to the reactive Fe recycling, including dissimilatory Fe reduction, adsorption, and Fe–sulfide formation, porewaters sampled near the sediment surface have been found to have a δ56Fe value as low as ?2.03‰ and an increase up to 0.12‰, with a burial depth of 10?cm. In contrast, an opposite variation trend was found for LJK sediments. Sediments sampled at 1-cm depth had a value of δ56Fe=?0.59‰ and decrease as low as ?1.75‰ with burial depth. This investigation demonstrated that significant Fe isotope fractionations occur in surface environments. Fe isotope compositions of particulate Fe were seriously affected by Fe sources, and Fe biogeochemical recycling has an important influence on Fe isotope fractionations in lake sediments, especially when there are significant amounts of reactive Fe and sulfate.  相似文献

Element doping has been proved to be a useful method to correct for the mass bias fractionation when analyzing iron isotope compositions. We present a systematic re-assessment on how the doped nickel may affect the iron isotope analysis in this study by carrying out several experiments. We find three important factors that can affect the analytical results, including the Ni:Fe ratio in the analyte solutions, the match of the Ni:Fe ratio between the unknown sample and standard solutions, and the match of the Fe concentration between the sample and standard solutions. Thus, caution is required when adding Ni to the analyte Fe solutions before analysis. Using our method, the δ56Fe and δ57Fe values of the USGS standards W-2a, BHVO-2, BCR-2, AGV-2 and GSP-2 are consistent with the recommended literature values, and the long-term (one year) external reproducibility is better than 0.03 and 0.05‰ (2SD) for δ56Fe and δ57Fe, respectively. Therefore, the analytical method established in our laboratory is a method of choice for high quantity Fe isotope data in geological materials.

This study presents high-precision W isotopic measurement results using the 180W-183W double spike technique with MC-ICP-MS. The effects of isobaric and polyatomic interferences on W isotopic measurements were evaluated. The δ186/184W values were not significantly affected when the solution had Hf/W ≤ 3 × 10-4, Ta/W ≤ 1, Os/W ≤ 0.06, Ce/W ≤ 0.0075, Nd/W ≤ 3.5 and Sm/W ≤ 5. The intermediate measurement precisions of both standard solutions (NIST SRM 3163 and Alfa Aesar W) and geological reference materials (NOD-A-1) were better than ±0.024‰ (2s). We also obtained a precision of 0.026‰ for a minimum sample loading mass of 5 ng, allowing the analysis of samples with low W contents. Replicated measurements of geological reference materials (AGV-2, BCR-2, BHVO-2, GSP-2, RGM-1, SDC-1, NOD-A-1 and NOD-P-1) yielded δ186/184W values ranging from 0.017‰ to 0.144‰. The δ186/184W values of two major tungsten ore minerals (scheelite and wolframite) were reported and compared herein. Scheelites had systematically slightly heavier W isotopic compositions than wolframites, which may reflect differences in the crystal structure. The resolvable variations of stable/mass-dependent W isotopic compositions in rocks and ore minerals make W isotopes a novel tool for studying hydrothermal mineralisation processes and the W cycle of geological reservoirs.  相似文献

Carbonatites define the largest range in Fe isotope compositions yet measured for igneous rocks, recording significant isotopic fractionations between carbonate, oxide, and silicate minerals during generation in the mantle and subsequent differentiation. In contrast to the relatively restricted range in δ56Fe values for mantle-derived basaltic magmas (δ56Fe?=?0.0?±?0.1‰), calcite from carbonatites have δ56Fe values between ?1.0 and +0.8‰, similar to the range defined by whole-rock samples of carbonatites. Based on expected carbonate-silicate fractionation factors at igneous or mantle temperatures, carbonatite magmas that have modestly negative δ56Fe values of ~ ?0.3‰ or lower can be explained by equilibrium with a silicate mantle. More negative δ56Fe values were probably produced by differentiation processes, including crystal fractionation and liquid immiscibility. Positive δ56Fe values for carbonatites are, however, unexpected, and such values seem to likely reflect interaction between low-Fe carbonates and Fe3+-rich fluids at igneous or near-igneous temperatures; the expected δ56Fe values for Fe2+-bearing fluids are too low to produced the observed positive δ56Fe values of some carbonatites, indicating that Fe isotopes may be a valuable tracer of redox conditions in carbonatite complexes. Further evidence for fluid-rock or fluid-magma interactions comes from the common occurrence of Fe isotope disequilibrium among carbonate, oxide, silicate, and sulfide minerals in the majority of the carbonatites studied. The common occurrence of Fe isotope disequilibrium among minerals in carbonatites may also indicate mixing of phenocyrsts from distinct magmas. Expulsion of Fe3+-rich brines into metasomatic aureols that surround carbonatite complexes are expected to produce high-δ56Fe fenites, but this has yet to be tested.  相似文献

Chromium (Cr) isotopes have been widely used in various fields of Earth and planetary sciences. However, high‐precision measurements of Cr stable isotope ratios are still challenged by difficulties in purifying Cr and organic matter interference from resin using double‐spike thermal ionisation mass spectrometry. In this study, an improved and easily operated two‐column chemical separation procedure using AG50W‐X12 (200–400 mesh) resin is introduced. This resin has a higher cross‐linking density than AG50W‐X8, and this higher density generates better separation efficiency and higher saturation. Organic matter from the resin is a common cause of inhibition of the emission of Cr during analysis by TIMS. Here, perchloric and nitric acids were utilised to eliminate organic matter interference. The Cr isotope ratios of samples with lower Cr contents could be measured precisely by TIMS. The long‐term intermediate measurement precision of δ53/52CrNIST SRM 979 for BHVO‐2 is better than ± 0.031‰ (2s) over one year. Replicated digestions and measurements of geological reference materials (OKUM, MUH‐1, JP‐1, BHVO‐1, BHVO‐2, AGV‐2 and GSP‐2) yield δ53/52CrNIST SRM 979 results ranging from ?0.129‰ to ?0.032‰. The Cr isotope ratios of geological reference materials are consistent with the δ53/52CrNIST SRM 979 values reported by previous studies, and the measurement uncertainty (± 0.031‰, 2s) is significantly improved.  相似文献

Molybdenum isotopes are increasingly widely applied in Earth Sciences. They are primarily used to investigate the oxygenation of Earth's ocean and atmosphere. However, more and more fields of application are being developed, such as magmatic and hydrothermal processes, planetary sciences or the tracking of environmental pollution. Here, we present a proposal for a unifying presentation of Mo isotope ratios in the studies of mass‐dependent isotope fractionation. We suggest that the δ98/95Mo of the NIST SRM 3134 be defined as +0.25‰. The rationale is that the vast majority of published data are presented relative to reference materials that are similar, but not identical, and that are all slightly lighter than NIST SRM 3134. Our proposed data presentation allows a direct first‐order comparison of almost all old data with future work while referring to an international measurement standard. In particular, canonical δ98/95Mo values such as +2.3‰ for seawater and ?0.7‰ for marine Fe–Mn precipitates can be kept for discussion. As recent publications show that the ocean molybdenum isotope signature is homogeneous, the IAPSO ocean water standard or any other open ocean water sample is suggested as a secondary measurement standard, with a defined δ98/95Mo value of +2.34 ± 0.10‰ (2s).  相似文献

Characterisation of mass transfer during subduction is fundamental to understand the origin of compositional heterogeneities in the upper mantle. Fe isotopes were measured in high-pressure/low-temperature metabasites (blueschists, eclogites and retrograde greenschists) from the Ile de Groix (France), a Variscan high-pressure terrane, to determine if the subducted oceanic crust contributes to mantle Fe isotope heterogeneities. The metabasites have δ56Fe values of +0.16 to +0.33‰, which are heavier than typical values of MORB and OIB, indicating that their basaltic protolith derives from a heavy-Fe mantle source. The δ56Fe correlates well with Y/Nb and (La/Sm)PM ratios, which commonly fractionate during magmatic processes, highlighting variations in the magmatic protolith composition. In addition, the shift of δ56Fe by +0.06 to 0.10‰ compared to basalts may reflect hydrothermal alteration prior to subduction. The δ56Fe decrease from blueschists (+0.19 ± 0.03 to +0.33 ± 0.01‰) to eclogites (+0.16 ± 0.02 to +0.18 ± 0.03‰) reflects small variations in the protolith composition, rather than Fe fractionation during metamorphism: newly-formed Fe-rich minerals allowed preserving bulk rock Fe compositions during metamorphic reactions and hampered any Fe isotope fractionation. Greenschists have δ56Fe values (+0.17 ± 0.01 to +0.27 ± 0.02‰) similar to high-pressure rocks. Hence, metasomatism related to fluids derived from the subducted hydrothermally altered metabasites might only have a limited effect on mantle Fe isotope composition under subsolidus conditions, owing to the large stability of Fe-rich minerals and low mobility of Fe. Subsequent melting of the heavy-Fe metabasites at deeper levels is expected to generate mantle Fe isotope heterogeneities.  相似文献

To investigate the genesis of BIFs, we have determined the Fe and Si isotope composition of coexisting mineral phases in samples from the ∼2.5 billion year old Kuruman Iron Formation (Transvaal Supergroup, South Africa) and Dales Gorges Member of the Brockman Iron Formation (Hamersley Group, Australia) by UV femtosecond laser ablation coupled to a MC-ICP-MS. Chert yields a total range of δ30Si between −1.3‰ and −0.8‰, but the Si isotope compositions are uniform in each core section examined. This uniformity suggests that Si precipitated from well-mixed seawater far removed from its sources such as hydrothermal vents or continental drainage. The Fe isotope composition of Fe-bearing mineral phases is much more heterogeneous compared to Si with δ56Fe values of −2.2‰ to 0‰. This heterogeneity is likely due to variable degrees of partial Fe(II) oxidation in surface waters, precipitation of different mineral phases and post-depositional Fe redistribution. Magnetite exhibits negative δ56Fe values, which can be attributed to a variety of diagenetic pathways: the light Fe isotope composition was inherited from the Fe(III) precursor, heavy Fe(II) was lost by abiotic reduction of the Fe(III) precursor or light Fe(II) was gained from external fluids. Micrometer-scale heterogeneities of δ56Fe in Fe oxides are attributed to variable degrees of Fe(II) oxidation or to isotope exchange upon Fe(II) adsorption within the water column and to Fe redistribution during diagenesis. Diagenetic Fe(III) reduction caused by oxidation of organic matter and Fe redistribution is supported by the C isotope composition of a carbonate-rich sample containing primary siderite. These carbonates yield δ13C values of ∼−10‰, which hints at a mixed carbon source in the seawater of both organic and inorganic carbon. The ancient seawater composition is estimated to have a minimum range in δ56Fe of −0.8‰ to 0‰, assuming that hematite and siderite have preserved their primary Fe isotope signature. The long-term near-zero Fe isotope composition of the Hamersley and Transvaal BIFs is in balance with the assumed composition of the Fe sources. The negative Fe isotope composition of the investigated BIF samples, however, indicates either a perturbation of the steady state, or they have to be balanced spatially by deposition of isotopically heavy Fe. In the case of Si, the negative Si isotope signature of these BIFs stands in marked contrast to the assumed source composition. The deviation from potential source composition requires a complementary sink of isotopically heavy Si in order to maintain steady state in the basin. Perturbing the steady state by extraordinary hydrothermal activity or continental weathering in contrast would have led to precipitation of light Si isotopes from seawater. Combining an explanation for both elements, a likely scenario is a steady state ocean basin with two sinks. When all published Fe isotope records including BIFs, microbial carbonates, shales and sedimentary pyrites, are considered, a complementary sink for heavy Fe isotopes must have existed in Precambrian ocean basins. This Fe sink could have been pelagic sediments, which however are not preserved. For Si, such a complementary sink for heavy Si isotopes might have been provided by other chert deposits within the basin.  相似文献

The commonly used, but no longer available, reference materials NIST SRM 976 (Cu) and ‘JMC Lyon’ (Zn) were calibrated against the new reference materials ERM®‐AE633, ERM®‐AE647 (Cu) and IRMM‐3702 (Zn), certified for isotope amount ratios. This cross‐calibration of new with old reference materials provides a continuous and reliable comparability of already published with future Cu and Zn isotope data. The Cu isotope amount ratio of NIST SRM 976 yielded δ65/63Cu values of ?0.01 ± 0.05‰ and ?0.21 ± 0.05‰ relative to ERM®‐AE633 and ERM®‐AE647, respectively, and a δ66/64ZnIRMM‐3702 value of ?0.29 ± 0.05‰ was determined for ‘JMC Lyon’. Furthermore, we separated Cu and Zn from five geological reference materials (BCR‐2, BHVO‐2, BIR‐1, AGV‐1 and G‐2) using a two‐step ion‐exchange chromatographic procedure. Possible isotope fractionation of Cu during chromatographic purification and introduction of resin‐ and/or matrix‐induced interferences were assessed by enriched 65Cu isotope addition. Instrumental mass bias correction for the isotope ratio determinations by MC‐ICP‐MS was performed using calibrator‐sample bracketing with internal Ni doping for Cu and a double spike approach for Zn. Our results for the five geological reference materials were in very good agreement with literature data, confirming the accuracy and applicability of our analytical protocol.  相似文献

Recent studies have suggested that rivers may present an isotopically light Fe source to the oceans. Since the input of dissolved iron from river water is generally controlled by flocculation processes that occur during estuarine mixing, it is important to investigate potential fractionation of Fe-isotopes during this process. In this study, we investigate the influence of the flocculation of Fe-rich colloids on the iron isotope composition of pristine estuarine waters and suspended particles. The samples were collected along a salinity gradient from the fresh water to the ocean in the North River estuary (MA, USA). Estuarine samples were filtered at 0.22 μm and the iron isotope composition of the two fractions (dissolved and particles) were analyzed using high-resolution MC-ICP-MS after chemical purification. Dissolved iron results show positive δ56Fe values (with an average of 0.43 ± 0.04‰) relative to the IRMM-14 standard and do not display any relationships with salinity or with percentage of colloid flocculation. The iron isotopic composition of the particles suspended in fresh water is characterized by more negative δ56Fe values than for dissolved Fe and correlate with the percentage of Fe flocculation. Particulate δ56Fe values vary from −0.09‰ at no flocculation to ∼0.1‰ at the flocculation maximum, which reflect mixing effects between river-borne particles, lithogenic particles derived from coastal seawaters and newly precipitated colloids. Since the process of flocculation produces minimal Fe-isotope fractionation in the dissolved Fe pool, we suggest that the pristine iron isotope composition of fresh water is preserved during estuarine mixing and that the value of the global riverine source into the ocean can be identified from the fresh water values. However, this study also suggests that δ56Fe composition of rivers can also be characterized by more positive δ56Fe values (up to 0.3‰) relative to the crust than previously reported. In order to improve our current understanding of the oceanic iron isotope cycling, further work is now required to determine the processes controlling the fractionation of Fe-isotopes during continental run-off.  相似文献

The Urucum area of Brazil hosts a series of Cryogenian ironstones intercalated by oxide-dominated manganese layers. The Urucum iron and manganese formations (IF-MnF) are among the largest sedimentary iron and associated manganese deposits of the Neoproterozoic, however, the depositional model and the source of metals for the IF-MnF in this area are highly controversial. In this study, we performed systematic Fe isotope analysis on fresh and geochemically characterized drill core samples of the Urucum iron and manganese formation deposited in the center of the ancient Urucum graben system. The samples have a large variation in Fe isotope composition, with a δ56Fe range of −2.04‰ to +0.75‰, and exhibit a general trend of decreasing δ56Fe values with increasing manganese contents. The low δ56Fe values of the IF and MnF samples reflect Rayleigh fractionation processes of contineous partial oxidation of aqueous Fe(II) prior to deposition at the sampling site. Using a mixing model and previously published Nd isotope data on the same samples, we estimated that benthic (i.e., porewaters released from submarine sediments in the Urucum basin) Fe fluxes provided 7–50% of total Fe in the Urucum IF-MnF, and the rest of Fe source was from low-temperature hydrothermal vents. Based on combined Fe and Nd isotope data of the Urucum IF-MnF, we propose that low-temperature hydrothermal fluids and benthic fluxes of pore waters were mixed and transported by an upwelling current. The fluid subsequently experienced partial oxidation during the transportation process and became enriched in light Fe isotopes. In the Urucum graben basin, the iron- and manganese-rich oxides deposition occurred progressively under increasingly oxidizing conditions, and such process could have operated repeatedly to produce the alternation of iron and manganese formations. The chemical sediments of the Urucum IF-MnF deposits thus reflect the existence of a sharp redox gradient in the marine environment during the late Cryogenian period.  相似文献
