Ammonites with bivalves or worm tubes attached are relatively rare among the abundant specimens in the Lower Jurassic (Sinemurian) mudstones at Bishop's Cleeve, Gloucestershire, UK, but provide evidence for ammonite taphonomy, environmental conditions and biological interactions between ammonites and epifauna. Epifauna attached only to one side or within the body chambers of ammonites usually indicate post-mortem attachment. Epifauna on both sides of, or overgrown by, ammonites attached in vivo. One large example of Oxynoticeras has at least 51 encrusting bivalves attached exclusively to one side indicating it formed a ‘benthic island’. Four, presumably annual, bivalve cohorts are recognized, with variation in preferred orientation in each cohort suggesting that current direction varied. Both the ammonite and its epifauna were buried by a single sedimentation event. Other informative examples include a Cheltonia that overgrew an epifaunal bivalve, and an example of Bifericeras which bears two clusters of four worm tubes, one of which apparently attached in vivo, the other post-mortem. Other examples bear too few specimens to be certain of the timing of attachment, but most probably attached post-mortem.  相似文献

Locally within the Charmouth Mudstone Formation (Sinemurian, Lower Jurassic) of the Dorset coast fatally bitten ammonites with ventral bite marks are common. Ventral bite marks occur at the rear of the body-chamber. The predator probably severed attachment muscles, thus removing its prey more easily. We report the first ventrally bitten fossil nautiloid, which is unusual in that the large bite mark is entirely within the phragmocone. The nautiloid is juvenile with a very short body-chamber extending 46° back from the apparently undamaged aperture. The whorl cross-section is nearly circular, giving the predator little to grip when biting. Nautiloid shells are also thicker than ammonite shells. Despite these difficulties, the predator bit repeatedly and damaged both the shell and septa. Five rounded bites occur on the left side, separated by sharp points. This suggests the predator was probably another cephalopod with suckered arms and powerful jaws. The centre of the bite is 160.5° back from the aperture, close to the mean value for ammonites (184.5°), suggesting the predator located the position of the first bite opposite the victim's aperture. Thus, we think the predator attacked an incomplete nautiloid shell which explains why the damage affects only the phragmocone.  相似文献

This paper describes a new ichthyosaur specimen from the Stonebarrow Marls Member (Charmouth Mudstone Formation) of Charmouth, Dorset. It is substantially complete and various characters of the skull (snout ratios and basioccipital morphology) and appendicular skeleton (the number of digits on the hind paddle, which can be used to infer the number of digits on the front paddle) indicate that the specimen is referable to Ichthyosaurus communis. This provides the first direct evidence for the presence of I. communis in the Pliensbachian, extending the stratigraphic range of the species. The specimen also preserves a probable gullet content, which demonstrates that fish formed part of the diet of this individual.  相似文献

An incomplete forefin in the collections of the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, is herein assigned to the rare leptonectid species, Leptonectes solei, known only from the west Dorset coast. It is only the third specimen of the species and is smaller than both the holotype and referred specimen. The new specimen is from the Lower Jurassic (lower Pliensbachian, Charmouth Mudstone Formation, Tragophylloceras ibex Ammonite Zone, Acanthopleuroceras valdani Ammonite Subzone) of Seatown, Dorset, UK. It confirms that all three species of Leptonectes were present in the Pliensbachian and expands the known diversity of ichthyosaurs for that time period. We show that isolated forefins of Leptonectes can be assigned to a species with a high degree of confidence.  相似文献

The most complete Hungarian Valanginian perisphinctid ammonite fauna of the Mecsek Mountains (South Hungary) consists of 14 species is reported. Thurmanniceras sp. aff. otopeta, Fuhriella michaelis, F. cf. hoheneggeri, Sarasinella cf. ambigua, Neocomites (Neocomites) subtenuis, Neocomites (Eristavites) platycostatus are reported for the first time from Hungary. The fauna comprises 23 ammonite species and is reported from Valanginian tuffaceous marl, alternating marl–limestone beds and loose limestone blocks. Two studied sections represent the Lower Valanginian Thurmanniceras pertransiens and partly the Busnardoites campylotoxus Zones while ammonites from loose blocks indicate the latter and possibly the Upper Valanginian Saynoceras verrucosum Zone. Variations in the faunal composition of the marl beds and the limestone blocks respectively, refer to the contrast between the ammonite ecological demands. Phylloceratid and lytoceratid ammonites prevail the marl beds, while olcostephanid and neocomitid ammonites prevail the shallower platform-like limestones. Sediment accumulation rate in that palaeo volcano related environment was high and bottom currents frequently washed together ammonite shells or filled their body chambers with smaller ammonite shell fragments. Due to the fast sedimentation the sections represent only partially the recognized ammonite zones therefore long-term or even infra-regional correlation was not possible. Palaeobiogeographically, the ammonite fauna has Mediterranean character and it shows close relationships to the Valanginian faunas of the Bakony Mts. (Hungary), Western Carpathians (Slovakia), Northern Calcareous Alps (Austria), and SE Spain. The presence of Fuhriella species is remarkable and enlarges our knowledge on the distribution of this enigmatic ammonite taxon adding new data to its Valanginian stratigraphic position and geographic distribution.  相似文献

A late Albian ammonite assemblage from the Provincial Formation of Villa Clara Province, Cuba is described. The Provincial Formation is a lithostratigraphic unit of Albian-Cenomanian age extensively exposed in central Cuba and formed within a part of the Caribbean Tethys that was volcanic during the Cretaceous. The formation is mainly composed of calcareous, terrigenous marine, and volcano-sedimentary deposits characterized by a series of micritic limestones intercalated with marls, sandstones, calcareous conglomerates, ash, and tuffaceous material. A rich assemblage of ammonites recovered from the calcareous biomicrites and marls is of late Albian (Stoliczkaia dispar Zone, Mortoniceras rostratum Subzone) age. The ammonite fauna shows a strong Tethyan affinity, and only a single hoplitid ammonite species was recorded. Although scarce, the first Cuban report of this and other boreal ammonite species now allows precise correlations to be made between Cuba and Albian sediments elsewhere in the world.  相似文献

The Lechówka section comprises the most complete Cretaceous–Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary succession in Poland and is among 29 sites worldwide with the youngest ammonite record. Here, cephalopods (ammonites and nautilids), organic-walled dinoflagellates (dinocysts) and foraminifera from the uppermost Maastrichtian interval are studied. In terms of ammonite biostratigraphy, the upper Maastrichtian Hoploscaphites constrictus crassus Zone is documented up to a level 120 cm below the K-Pg boundary. There is no direct, ammonite-based evidence of the highest Maastrichtian H. constrictus johnjagti Zone. However, the predominance of the dinocyst marker taxon Palynodinium grallator suggests the presence of the equivalent of the uppermost Maastrichtian Thalassiphora pelagica Subzone, which is correlatable with the H. c. johnjagti ammonite Zone. The planktonic foraminiferal assemblage is coeval with that from the H. c. johnjagti Zone as well. These data indicate that the top of the Maastrichtian at Lechówka is complete within the limits of biostratigraphic resolution, albeit slightly condensed. The dinocyst and foraminiferal assemblages are dominated by taxa that are characteristic of high-energy, marginal marine environments. A reduction in test size among the calcareous epifaunal benthic foraminifera is observed at a level 50 cm below the K-Pg boundary, which is possibly related to environmental stress associated with Deccan volcanism.  相似文献

The Middle Oxfordian to lowermost Upper Kimmeridgian ammonite faunas from northern Central Siberia (Nordvik, Chernokhrebetnaya, and Levaya Boyarka sections) are discussed, giving the basis for distinguishing the ammonite zones based on cardioceratid ammonites of the genus Amoeboceras (Boreal zonation), and, within the Kimmeridgian Stage, faunas–for distinguishing zones based on the aulacostephanid ammonites (Subboreal zonation). The succession of Boreal ammonites is essentially the same as in other areas of the Arctic and NW Europe, but the Subboreal ammonites differ somewhat from those known from NW Europe and Greenland. The Siberian aulacostephanid zones—the Involuta Zone and the Evoluta Zone—are correlated with the Baylei Zone (without its lowermost portion), and the Cymodoce Zone/lowermost part of the Mutabilis Zone (the Askepta Subzone) from NW Europe. The uniform character of the Boreal ammonite faunas in the Arctic makes possible a discussion on their phylogeny during the Late Oxfordian and Kimmeridgian: the succession of particular groups of Amoeboceras species referred to successive subgenera is revealed by the occurrence of well differentiated assemblages of typical normal-sized macro and microconchs, intermittently marked by the occurrence of assemblages of paedomorphic “small-sized microconchs” appearing at some levels preceeding marked evolutionary modifications. Some comments on the paleontology of separate groups of ammonites are also given. These include a discussion on the occurrence of Middle Oxfordian ammonites of the genus Cardioceras in the Nordvik section in relation to the critical review of the paper of Rogov and Wierzbowski (2009) by Nikitenko et al. (2011). The discussion shows that the oldest deposits in the section belong to the Middle Oxfordian, which results in the necessity for some changes in the foraminiferal zonal scheme of Nikitenko et al. (2011). The ammonites of the Pictonia involuta group are distinguished as the new subgenus Mesezhnikovia Wierzbowski and Rogov.  相似文献

Stratigraphically important ammonites Deshayesites ex gr. deshayesi (d’Orbigny, 1840), Deshayesites sp. juv., and Paradeshayesites aff. callidiscus [Casey, 1961] from lower Aptian pelagic sediments at the Verkhorech’e Village have been described and depicted. The new finds and revision of previously found ammonites allow the recognition of ammonite zones Deshayesites volgensis and Deshayesites deshayesi in the Southwestern Crimea.  相似文献

With a thickness of 3900 m, the Tazareh section is one of the thickest developments of the Shemshak Formation in the Alborz range. It overlies with sharp and disconformable contact the limestones and dolomites of the Lower–Middle Triassic Elikah Formation and is topped, again with a disconformable contact, by the marls and limestones of the Middle Jurassic Dalichai Formation. The nearly exclusively siliciclastic succession represents a range of environments, from fluvial channels, flood plains, swamps and lake systems to storm-dominated shelf, and a comparatively deep marine and partly dysoxic basin. The segment of the section between 2300 and 3500 m is exclusively marine and contains a moderately diverse ammonite fauna, ranging from the Middle Toarcian to the Upper Aalenian. The ammonite fauna comprises 21 taxa, among them the new genus Shahrudites with two new species, Shahrudites asseretoi and S. stoecklini from the Middle Aalenian Bradfordensis Zone. The other ammonites from the Shemshak Formation at Tazareh (as elsewhere in North and Central Iran) are exclusively Tethyan in character and closely related to faunas from western and central Europe. An ammonite-based correlation of Toarcian–Aalenian successions of the eastern Alborz with time-equivalent strata of the Lut Block, part of the Central-East Iranian Microcontinent (ca. 500 km to the south), suggests a strong influence of synsedimentary tectonics during the deposition of the upper Shemshak Formation.  相似文献

The Jurassic succession of the Wessex Basin – especially that cropping out within the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site – contains important lagerstätten for coleoid cephalopods. The Blue Lias and Charmouth Mudstone formations of West Dorset, the Oxford Clay Formation of North Wiltshire and the Kimmeridge Clay Formation of Purbeck have provided large numbers of important body fossils that inform our knowledge of coleoid palaeobiology, including the hooks present in the arms. Isolated hooks are also found in the processed residues studied by micropalaeontologists and these occurrences can be used – in some cases – to record the presence of key taxa in the absence of well-preserved body fossils. While some hook morphotypes can be attributed to known species, there are many forms of hook described where the parent animal remains unknown. The present state of our knowledge of the Jurassic assemblages in the Wessex Basin is presented and remaining issues identified.  相似文献

Five successive ammonite assemblages are distinguished in the basal part (Riasanites rjasanensis Zone s. l.) of the Ryazanian Stage of the East European platform. These are (from the base upward) (1) Hectoroceras tolijense; (2) Hectoroceras kochi; (3) Riasanites swistowianus; (4) Riasanites rjasanensis; and (5) Transcaspiites transfigurabilis assemblages. Two lower assemblages consist entirely of boreal taxa, which occur in association with diverse ammonites of the Tethyan origin higher in the section. The data obtained show that three upper assemblages are correlative with the Berriasian Dalmasiceras tauricum, Riasanites rjasanensis-Spiticeras cautleyi, and Euthymiceras euthymi subzones of the northern Caucasus. The succession of five–six ammonite assemblages established in the East European platform above the top of the Craspedites nodiger Zone may correspond to the same number of ammonite assemblages characterizing lower subzones of the standard Berriasian. Berriasella rulevae Mitta, sp. nov. from the upper part of the Riasanites rjasanensis Zone (transfigurabilis biohorizon) is described.  相似文献

Here we describe the composition and distribution of sclerobionts on the late Eocene bivalve Carolia placunoides and provide information about its paleoecology. More than 250 shells were collected from the Temple Member of the Qasr El-Sagha Formation exposed in El-Fayum Province. Nine ichnogenera have been recorded including Gastrochaenolites, Maeandropolydora, Caulostrepsis, Entobia, Centrichnus, Belichnus, Anellusichnus, Oichnus and Trypanites. The dense population of borings made by boring bivalves, Gastrochaenolites, is the most remarkable. Encrusters include serpulid worms (Spirobranchus cf. luxata), balanoid barnacles, and oysters. Shells of juvenile Carolia were the most dominant encrusters. Sclerobionts occurred on left and right valves; they apparently favoured the interior surfaces on both valves but they preferred no special sites. The Carolia placunoides shell concentration is interpreted as para-autochthonous assemblage.  相似文献

The latest Triassic to earliest Jurassic transition has been widely studied due the occurrence of a major global extinction associated with a global hyperthermal event in this interval. Furthermore, a number of distinct geochemical events in the global carbon cycle can be recognised in the stable-isotope record across this boundary interval at many localities. Two fully-cored boreholes from East Antrim in Northern Ireland (Carnduff-1 and Carnduff-2) have penetrated sediments of latest Triassic to Early Jurassic age (Rhaetian to Early Sinemurian). Ammonites, foraminifera, ostracods and palynomorphs provide a robust chronology as well as insights to palaeoenvironmental conditions during this period. The sedimentary and palynological evidence support a largely marginal-marine setting for the sediments of the Triassic Penarth Group while a range of palaeontological evidence shows that the Early Jurassic Waterloo Mudstone Formation represents shallow-marine, shelf conditions that represent generally well-oxygenated bottom waters, with little evidence for dysoxia. Detailed ammonite biostratigraphy (ammonites first occur about 7.5 m up from the base of the Lias Group) indicates that the cores represent largely continuous sedimentation through the Hettangian and earliest Sinemurian (to Turneri Chronozone, Birchi Subchronozone). Stable-isotope analysis of both carbonate and organic carbon show a distinct carbon isotope excursion (CIE) in both fractions through the Cotham and Langport members (Lilstock Formation, Penarth Group, latest Triassic) which are considered to correlate with the distinctive ‘Initial’ CIE witnessed in SW England and probably the GSSP and other sites across the world.  相似文献

Terry et al. (2001) proposed that the Fox Hills Formation in the area of Badlands National Park, southwestern South Dakota, USA, contains the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary, marked by a thick layer of contorted bedding called the Disturbed or Disrupted Zone (DZ). Examination of the ammonites from just below this layer yields Hoploscaphites nicolletii (Morton, 1842), H. spedeni (Landman and Waage, 1993), Discoscaphites gulosus (Morton, 1834), D. conradi (Morton, 1834), and Sphenodiscus lobatus (Tuomey, 1856). The abundance of Discoscaphites and the presence of a coarsely ornamented specimen of H. spedeni suggest that this assemblage corresponds to the upper part of the H. nicolletii Zone in the type area of the Fox Hills Formation. No ammonites are present above the DZ, but previous analyses of the dinoflagellates from just below, within, and above the DZ by Palamarczuk et al. (2004) are consistent with the ammonite results. Together, these fossils indicate that the interval just below and above the DZ represents the upper part of the lower upper Maastrichtian (≈ middle upper Maastichtian). Belemnites are present in the strata just below the DZ and occur as guards either isolated in the matrix or associated with fragmentary ammonites in concretions composed of soft sandy marl. The belemnites are assigned to Belemnitella bulbosa Meek and Hayden, 1857a, and B. badlandsensis n. sp., which is characterized by an unusually large fissure angle. The distribution of ammonites and lithofacies at this time reveals that the western shoreline of the Western Interior Seaway trended northeast–southwest across western South Dakota and adjacent parts of North Dakota. Based on an examination of the oxygen isotopes of the belemnites and scaphites in this area, the seawater temperature was nearly constant along the coast, approximately 17–20 °C. A comparison of the contact between the Pierre Shale and Fox Hills Formation at various localities in the Western Interior Basin indicates that this contact rises in the section toward the east, reflecting the final retreat of the Seaway during the late Maastrichtian.  相似文献

A systematic sedimentologic and paleomagnetic study was carried out in the Vaca Muerta Formation, cropping out in the northern Neuquén Basin, west-central Argentina. The studied section is c. 280 m-thick and represents a carbonate ramp system bearing ammonites that indicate Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous ages. The Vaca Muerta Formation is one of the most important unconventional hydrocarbon reservoirs in the world and its thorough study has become a relevant target in Argentina. The J-K boundary is comprised within this unit, and although it is well-dated through biostratigraphy (mainly ammonites), the position of particularly the boundary is yet a matter of hot debate. Therefore, the systematic paleomagnetic and cyclostratigraphic study in the Vaca Muerta Formation was considered relevant in order to obtain the first Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous magnetostratigraphy of the southern hemisphere on the first place and to precise the position of the J-K boundary in the Neuquén Basin, on the other. Biostratigraphy is well studied in the area, so that paleomagnetic sampling horizons were reliably tied, particularly through ammonites. Almost 450 standard specimens have been processed for this study distributed along 56 paleomagnetic sampling horizons that were dated using ammonites. Paleomagnetic behaviours showed to be very stable, and their quality and primary origin have been proved through several paleomagnetic field tests The resultant magnetostratigraphic scale is made up of 11 reverse and 10 normal polarity zones, spanning the Andean Virgatosphinctes mendozanus (lower Tithonian) to Spiticeras damesi Zones (upper Berriasian). These polarity zones were correlated with those of the International Geomagnetic Polarity Time Scale 2012 and 2016 through the correlation between Andean and Tethyan ammonite zones. Cyclostratigraphy on the other hand, proved to be quite consistent with the magnetostratigraphy. Through the correlation of the resultant paleomagnetic and cyclostratigraphic data, it was possible to date the section with unprecedented precision, and therefore, to establish the position of the Jurassic-Cretaceous boundary. The paleomagnetic pole calculated from the primary magnetization is located at: Lon = 191.6°E, Lat = 76.2°S, A95 = 3.5°, indicating a c. 24° clockwise rotation for the studied section, which is consistent with structural data of the region.  相似文献

An ammonite fauna from the upper Abderaz Formation of Kuh-e-Bul in the northwestern part of the Koppeh Dagh (Iran) is described and illustrated. The collection of 30 specimens is assigned to seven species, all of which are recorded from Iran for the first time: Pseudophyllites indra (Forbes, 1846), Pachydiscus (Pach.) haldemsis (Schlüter, 1867), Patagiosites stobaei (Nilsson, 1827), Menuites wittekindi (Schlüter, 1876), Glyptoxoceras retrorsum (Schlüter, 1872), Lewyites elegans (Moberg, 1885) and Trachyscaphites spiniger (Schlüter, 1872). This fauna is of a typical Boreal character, with all taxa having been described from northwest Europe originally. The stratigraphic range indicated by the ammonites is lower upper Campanian, below the first occurrence of Nostoceras (Bostrychoceras) polyplocum (Roemer, 1841) and probably above the last occurrence of Hoplitoplacenticeras (H.) vari (Schlüter, 1872). A nannofossil sample from the ammonite-bearing interval corresponds to the upper Campanian nannofossil zone UC15/CC22. Thus, on the basis of both ammonites and calcareous nannofossils, the upper Abderaz Formation is shown to be younger than assumed previously.  相似文献

The subject of the study was the taxonomy of the ammonite fauna from the Upper Barremian marls and marly limestones of the Donji Milanovac Formation outcropped at the Boljetin Hill (Danubicum Unit). These sediments yielded a rich ammonite fauna which included also representatives of two superfamilies, Desmoceratoidea and Silesitoidea. The Desmoceratoidea include the family Barremitidae to which belong Plesiospitidiscus boljetinensis n. sp., Barremites balkanicus, Montanesiceras breskovskii n. sp., Barremitites strettostoma strettostoma and B. panae, Torcapella serbiensis n. sp., Pseudohaploceras tachthaliae, P. portaeferreae, Melchiorites haugi and Patruliusiceras cf. crenelatum. The Silesitoidea are represented by the family Silesitidae with Silesites trajani and S. seranonis. With the exception of the new, possibly endemic species, Plesiospitidiscus boljetinensis n. sp., Montanesiceras breskovskii n. sp., and Torcapella serbiensis n. sp., these taxa are common in the Tethyan regions. The studied deposits with ammonites belong to the lower part of the Late Barremian, in particular to the upper part of the Toxancyloceras vandenheckii ammonite Zone up to the lower part of the Imerites giraudi Zone.  相似文献
