Recent studies have shown that accumulation of 99Tc in seabed sediments labelled by authorised radioactive liquid discharges into the NE Irish Sea from the Sellafield reprocessing complex is greater than previously thought. In this paper, new data on 99Tc concentration profiles in subtidal and intertidal sediments from the eastern and western Irish Sea are provided with a view to elucidating the processes responsible for the incorporation and retention of 99Tc in the seabed. The data show that substantial amounts of 99Tc have accumulated in the fine-grained subtidal sediments off the Cumbrian coast, particularly after increased releases from Sellafield following the commissioning of the Enhanced Actinide Removal Plant (EARP) in 1994. In all the cores taken in this area, 99Tc has been found to be present to depths in excess of 30 cm. Analysis of 137Cs and 241Am profiles, together with other supporting geochemical data, show a high degree of homogenisation of the sediments down to these depths as a result of physical and biological processes, and confirm that incorporation of 99Tc into the sediment compartment is actually the result of mixing and reworking, rather than active sediment accumulation. In contrast, active deposition of material transported from this mixed pool of sediment appears to be the dominant mechanism controlling 99Tc profiles in intertidal areas close to the Sellafield discharge outfall.Data obtained from the analysis of subtidal sediment cores from the western Irish Sea mud basin suggest that similar mixing processes to those occurring in the subtidal sediments of the eastern Irish Sea are also active in this area. Time-series data on 99Tc concentrations in surficial sediments from this basin, gathered in the period 1988–2004, inclusive, show a clear increase in concentrations, by a factor of ~2, between samples collected pre-EARP and post-EARP. The constancy of 99Tc concentrations in surface sediments throughout the 1980s and the early-1990s suggests that little redissolution and export of 99Tc occurred over this extended period. A similar observation applies to the post-EARP period, when concentrations remained relatively constant despite the reported steady decrease in 99Tc concentrations in the overlying waters.This apparent lack of remobilisation is consistent with data from sequential extraction analyses, which indicate that the bulk of the 99Tc is strongly bound to non-labile geochemical phases, with only a small proportion associated with exchangeable and acido-soluble phases. Further, these analyses show that 99Tc is not associated with oxygen-sensitive and highly-reactive acid-volatile sulphides (AVS) to any significant extent.  相似文献

Between January 1978 and September 1979 samples of subsurface (1 m) water and surface sediment were collected from sites in the North Sea, English Channel, Irish Sea and a number of estuarine areas. These have been analysed by fluorescence spectroscopy (UVF) in order to provide information on the levels of hydrocarbons generally present in UK marine waters.Total hydrocarbon concentrations (THCs) of water samples ranged from 1.1–74 μg l.?1 Ekofisk crude oil equivalents, all values greater than 3.5 μg l.?1 occurring inshore. In offshore areas the mean THCs were: 1.3 μg l.?1 in the northern North Sea, 1.5 μg l.?1 in the western Channel, 2.5 μg l.?1 in the eastern Channel and southern North Sea, and 2.6 μg l.?1 in the Irish Sea.THCs of sediment samples ranged from 0.27–340 μ g?1 dry weight Ekofisk crude oil equivalents, the highest concentration being in the Queen's Channel, the main entrance to the River Mersey.  相似文献

The irregular seafloor of the narrow Irish Sea on the NW European Shelf has been documented over several decades. From recently collected swath bathymetry data, very large trochoidal, nearly symmetrical sediment waves are observed in many parts of the Irish Sea and appear similar to those described from other continental shelf seas in North America that were covered by glacigenic sediments during the Last Glacial Maximum. Swath multibeam and single beam bathymetry data, backscatter intensity, shallow seismic imagery, video footage and sediment cores from the Irish Sea high sediment waves have been integrated to identify their genesis with reference to present and past hydrodynamic variability. From cross-sectional profiles over asymmetrical sediment waves in the Irish Sea the direction of asymmetry is used to map residual bed stress directions and associated bedload transport paths. Irish Sea peak bed stress vectors were generated using a two-dimensional palaeo-tidal model for the NW European shelf seas and compare well with the observations. Tidally induced bed stresses are modelled to have increased between 7–10 ka BP, to be nearly symmetrical in magnitude and to have reversed in dominant direction on a millennial scale. These environmental conditions during the post-glacial marine transgression are suggested here to help comprehend the construction of the very large sediment waves, with local variations due to differences in sediment grain size, sediment supply, water depth and intensified currents due to seafloor slopes. Model parameterisation using an open ocean boundary with time-dependent tidal changes and the implementation of high-resolution bathymetric information will improve future models of small-scale bed shear stress patterns and improve the predictive value of such modelling efforts.  相似文献

A large number of sediment cores collected during 2005-2010 from the Taiwan Strait were analyzed for radionuclides (210Pb, 137Cs and 7Be) to elucidate sedimentation dynamics in this all-important gateway linking two largest marginal seas in the western Pacific (namely, the South China Sea and the East China Sea). Apparent sediment accumulation rates derived from 210Pb and 137Cs profiles vary from <0.1 to >2 cm/yr, averaging ∼0.4 cm/yr and showing a spatial pattern closely related to hydrodynamics and sediment source-to-sink pathways. Spatial-temporal variation of 7Be activity in surface sediments off Taiwan’s west coast indicates episodic deposition of flood layers and their mobility from river estuaries toward the north. In conjunction with particle size distribution in surface sediments and the structure of sediment strata revealed by sub-bottom echo images; the radionuclide data can be used to outline three different sediment source-to-sink dispersal systems. Based on sediment loads of surrounding rivers and the distribution of sediment accumulation rates, lateral transport is required to account for the budget and size distribution of sediments in the strait.  相似文献

Two gravity cores collected off the modern Huanghe (Yellow River) delta in the southern Bohai Sea were analyzed for grain size, the total organic carbon (TOC)/total nitrogen (TN) ratio, color diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, 14C dating and 137Cs and 210Pb isotope contents to clarify changes in the sedimentary environment during the Holocene. In particular, the effect of natural and artificial river-course shifts of the Huanghe on the Bohai Sea sediment was investigated. A peat layer, scouring surface and sharp changes in the grain size, TOC/TN ratio, sediment color (L?, a?) and magnetic susceptibility were identified and are likely to be due to the early-Holocene sea-level rise resulting in environmental changes from coastal to shelf environments in the Bohai Sea. After the sea level reached its maximum at 6-7 ka BP, the lateral shifts in the river course of the Huanghe formed 10 superlobes, and superlobe 7 (11-1048 AD) and superlobe 10 (1855-present) of the Huanghe delta affected the core sites. The northern site of BH-239 has been more affected by the Huanghe since the middle Holocene. Notably, in the superlobe 10 period, the reshaping of the northern Huanghe delta due to an artificial river-course shift from northward to eastward in 1976 (e.g., a∼10 km shoreline retreat due to coastal erosion) was recorded in the core sediments, particularly in terms of the TOC/TN ratio, sediment color (L? and a?) and magnetic susceptibility, owing to the huge sediment supply from coastal erosion of the former river mouth area.  相似文献

The distribution of americium in surface intertidal sediments from a coastal environment near the Windscale nuclear fuel reprocessing plant has been investigated. The study includes data on the broadscale distribution of 241Am in Northwest England, but focuses on the sediments of the Ravenglass estuary 10 km south of Windscale. The results indicate that americium concentrations in the inner estuary sediments are up to seven times higher than those from the Irish Sea itself. Americium distribution on silt banks is rather constant on a small scale, but varies considerably between adjacent silt bank and salt marsh areas.  相似文献

Sediment samples from multiple sites in the North Sea Coast of England were solvent extracted and analysed by a quadruple gas chromatograph equipped with a mass spectrometer detector in order to determine the concentration and distribution of aliphatic and alicyclic n-alkanes. Results indicate that most of the organic species present in the sediment samples consisted of anthropogenically derived long chain aliphatic and alicyclic n-alkanes (nC10-15, 17, 19-21, 24, 26, 27, 29, 30, 33, 35, 36, 43), n-alkanols, n-alkanals, n-alkanones, esters as well as many volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Chemical composition of samples and relative concentration were found to vary both spatially and temporally on all scales. These variations are mainly attributable to spatial and temporal variations in source but also parameters such as rainfall, turbulence and micro-organism activity also account for the observed trends.  相似文献

We applied a three-dimensional general ocean and coastal circulation model to the Irish Sea in order to determine water renewal time scales in the region. The model was forced with meteorological data for 1995, a year with relatively warm summer and when extensive hydrographic surveys were conducted in the Irish Sea. We investigated intra-annual variability in the rates of net flow through the Irish Sea and carried out several flushing simulations based on conservative tracer transport. The results indicate that the net northward flow of 2.50 km3/d is seasonally highly variable and under certain conditions is reversed to southward. The variability in obtained residence times is high; baroclinic effects are significant. Obtained results point at the importance of spatial and temporal consideration for transport of pollutants in the shelf seas. Implications for management are numerous and involve activities such as transport, fishing, use of resources, nature conservation, monitoring, tourism and recreation.  相似文献

A large sediment deposit known as the Meiji Drift, located in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, is thought to have formed from deep water exiting the Bering Sea, although no notable deep water forms there presently. We determine the terrigenous sources since 140 ka to the drift using bulk sediment 40Ar–39Ar and Nd isotopic analyses on the silt-sized (20–63 μm) terrigenous fraction from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 884 to reconstruct paleo-circulation patterns. There are large changes in both isotopic tracers, varying on glacial–interglacial cycles. During glacial intervals, bulk sediment 40Ar–39Ar ages range between 40 and 80 Ma, while Nd isotopic values range from εNd = ? 1 to + 2. During interglacial intervals, sediments become much younger and more radiogenic, with bulk sediment ages falling to 2–15 Ma and Nd isotopic values ranging between εNd = + 5 and + 9. These data and quantitative comparison to potential source rocks indicate that the young Kamchatkan and Aleutian Arcs, lying NW and NE of the Meiji Drift, contribute the majority of sediment during interglacials. Conversely, older source rocks, such as those drained by the Yukon River and northeast Russia are the dominant origin of sediments during glacials. Mixing model calculations suggest that as much as 35–45% of the sediment deposited in the Meiji Drift during glacials is from the Bering Sea. It remains unclear whether thermohaline-type circulation or focussing of Bering Sea flow lead to the glacial–interglacial sediment source changes observed here.  相似文献

The isotopic composition and concentration of Pb was measured in suspended particulate matter of the Irish Sea. Aerosol, surficial and pre-industrial sediment was also analysed to provide information on sources terms. Concentrations of Pb in suspended sediments were lower than previously reported which presumably reflects the international effort to reduce Pb inputs to the environment. Lead concentrations were highest in Liverpool Bay and lowest in the western Irish Sea. A significant negative relationship between Pb and salinity suggests that present inputs and the resuspension of relict lead associated with particles in areas significantly affected by freshwater discharges are the predominant sources of Pb to the Irish Sea. The isotopic composition of Pb in the stratified region of the western Irish Sea demonstrates that atmospheric sources are also significant to this region, which is consistent with current knowledge on the hydrography. Pb isotopic ratios show that water entering the Irish Sea through St George's Channel is significantly influenced by anthropogenic inputs prior to additional contamination by direct inputs to the Irish Sea.  相似文献

Side scan sonar, high-resolution seismic and multibeam data collected off the coast of Asinara Island in the northernmost part of Sardinia have revealed the occurrence of four distinct acoustical patterns that can be related to four main sea-bed types. The four facies represent fine sand (Type A), medium to coarse sand (Type B), patchy sand cover between basement outcrops (Type C) and a predominantly sandy sea-floor colonized by the seagrass Posidonia Oceanica (Type P). The distribution of the sea-bed types indicates that the study area is characterized by a rather complex morphological setting. A remarkable physiographic difference exists between the eastern and western sector of the island, with the latter being affected by strong, westerly winds, mainly the so-called “Mistral”. The wave climate in this area is dominated by wind waves, which can reach a maximum height of 8 m during winter storms. Sediments are mobilized at water depths greater than 30 m from the sea surface during these energetic oceanographic regimes. We infer that dune fields and sand ribbons are deposited by strong offshore flows along the sea-bed resulting as a consequence of wave- and wind-induced onshore water transport.  相似文献

A novel bacterium T7-2 was isolated from the oil-polluted sea-bed mud of Bohai Sea, northern China, which can degrade diesel oil at 15 °C. This bacterium was identified as a strain of Rhodococcus erythropolis according to its 16S rDNA gene. In order to enhance degradation efficiency, a five-level, three-factor central composite design was employed to optimize the nutrition supplied to artificial seawater. The results indicate that a supplement of 2.53 g (NH4)2SO4 L−1, 2.75 g Na2HPO4 L−1 and 0.01 g yeast extract L−1 to artificial seawater increases the degradation rate from 12.61% to 75% within 7 d.  相似文献

A comparative study of 23 PAH congeners in sediment of the Caspian Sea coast and Anzali Wetland was conducted in 2010. Surface sediment was analyzed using chromatography and mass spectrometry. Total PAH concentrations ranged between 212 and 9009 ng g1 dw. Spatial distribution maps revealed that PAH levels were higher in the coastal areas of the Caspian Sea where oil related activities have been common since 1800’s. Diagnostic ratios analysis indicated that PAHs largely originated from petrogenic processes. PAH toxicity level was assessed using sediment quality guidelines and toxic equivalent concentrations to determine toxic effects on marine organism. Based on these investigations, in our study areas, the probability of toxicity for benthic organisms is “low to medium”. The toxic equivalent concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs varied between 11 and 231 ng TEQ/g; higher total toxic equivalent concentrations values were found in the coastal areas of the Caspian Sea.  相似文献

Water level, sediment heterogeneity, and plant density are important factors that determine plant growth, distribution, and community structure. In the present study, we investigated the effects of these factors on the growth and root characteristics of Carex brevicuspis. We conducted an outdoor experiment to monitor biomass accumulation and allocation, relative root distribution mass ratio, longest root length, and total N and P contents of C. brevicuspis plants. We used a factorial design with two water levels (0 cm and −15 cm relative to the soil surface, named high and low water level treatments, respectively), three sediment types (sand/clay sediment with 0–15 cm of sand and 15–30 cm of clay; mixed sediment with 0–30 cm mixture of sand and clay with 1:1 volumw ratio; and clay/sand sediment with 0–15 cm of clay and 15–30 cm of sand), and three plant densities (88 plants per m2, 354 plants per m2, and 708 plants per m2). Biomass accumulation decreased with increasing plant density and was significantly higher in the low water level and the clay/sand sediment than in the high water level and the other two sediment types. The shoot:root ratio was markedly higher in the high water level than in the low water level and decreased with increasing plant density; further, in the high water level, it was significantly lower in the sand/clay sediment than in the other two sediment types. The relative root distribution mass ratio was markedly higher in the high water level treatments than in the low water level treatments. Further, in the high water level treatments, the relative root distribution mass ratio increased with increasing plant density in the clay/sand sediment and was lower in the sand/clay sediment than in the other two sediment types. The longest root length was significantly lower in the high water level than in the low water level and increased with increasing plant density in the sand/clay sediment in the high water level. Total N content in the plants was influenced only by sediment type; on the other hand, total P content was markedly higher in the high water level than in the low water level. Our data indicate that growth of C. brevicuspis was limited by higher water level, higher density and sand/clay sediment. Plants can increase shoot:root ratio and develop shallow root system to acclimate to high water level and thus could adjust shoot:root ratio and root characteristics, e.g. decrease their shoot:root ratio and allocating more root and increasing root length to the nutrient rich layer to acclimate to conditions of higher density and sediment heterogeneity.  相似文献

The low-level radioactive liquid wastes which arise at the U.K. nuclear fuel reprocessing plant at Windscale on the Cumbria coast are discharged into the Irish Sea. These wastes are initially dispersed but they can also become reconcentrated in marine organisms. The present work discusses the concentrations of 137Cs relative to those of potassium in the various stages of marine food chains and shows that discrimination occurs in favour of 137Cs over potassium during the transfer between the different trophic levels.  相似文献

Concentrations of trace metals (Zn, Cr, Cu, V, Cd and Pb), total organic carbon (TOC), black carbon (BC) and their granulometry were examined in 25 surface sediment samples from the northern Bering Sea, Chukchi Sea and adjacent areas. Trace metal concentrations in the sediments varied from 21.06–168.21 mg kg−1 for Zn, 8.91–46.94 mg kg−1 for Cr, 2.69–49.39 mg kg−1 for Cu, 32.46–185.54 mg kg−1 for V, 0.09–0.92 mg kg−1 for Cd, and 0.95–15.25 mg kg−1 for Pb. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) indicated that trace metal contamination (Zn and Cd) existed in some stations of the study area. The distribution of grain size plays an important role in influencing the distribution of trace metals (Zn, Cr, Cu, V, and Pb) in sediments from the Chukchi Sea and adjacent areas.  相似文献

After the detection of the 1,20,21-C_(29) long-chain triol in some sediments and freshwater pteridophytes, in this study, a new homologous long-chain triol, 1,3,4-C_(27-29), is detected for the first time in the Site4 B core sediment in the northern South China Sea. The hydroxyl location and length of the carbon chain of this newly discovered triol differ from those of 1,20,21-C_(29) triol. The test results of its molecular distribution and individual carbon isotope reveal that 1,3,4-C_(29) triol has a good correlation with n-C_(26-30) even carbon-numbered long-chain fatty alcohols, with R~2(n=68) values of 0.905, 0.929 and 0.903, respectively, and its carbon isotope composition, at –32.3‰±1.9‰, is similar to that of n-C_(26-30), at –29.13‰±0.87‰, –32.98‰±1.28‰, and –32.98‰±1.28‰. 1,3,4-C_(29) triol from the Site4 B core sediment and terrigenous long-chain fatty alcohol(n-C_(26-34)) show highly consistent distribution trends in the entire section; thus, the former could serve as a proxy indicator of the terrigenous input. Considering that the 1,20,21-C_(29) triol in previous research belongs to Azolla, which are fresh water pteridophytes, the 1,3,4-C_(27-29) triol identified in this study might have similar biogenetic derivation. Thus, determination of its biogenic area and growing environment could provide potential organic geochemical evidence supporting the terrigenous input and source in the northern South China Sea.  相似文献

Data on the distribution of fCO2 were obtained during a cruise in the Aegean Sea during February 2006. The fCO2 of surface water (fCO2sw) was lower than the atmospheric fCO2 (fCO2atm) throughout the area surveyed and ΔfCO2 values varied from ?34 to ?61 μatm. The observed under-saturation suggests that surface waters in the Aegean represent a sink for atmospheric CO2 during the winter of 2006. Higher fCO2sw values were recorded in the ‘less warm’ and ‘less saline’ shallow northernmost part of the Aegean Sea implying that the lower seawater temperature and salinity in this area play a crucial role in the spatial distribution of fCO2sw.A first estimate of the magnitude of the air–sea CO2 exchange and the potential role of the Aegean Sea in the transfer of atmospheric CO2 was also obtained. The air–sea CO2 fluxes calculated using different gas transfer formulations showed that during February 2006, the Aegean Sea absorbs atmospheric CO2 at a rate ranging from ?6.2 to ?11.8 mmol m?2 d?1 with the shipboard recorded wind speeds and at almost half rate (?3.5 to ?5.5 mmol m?2 d?1) with the monthly mean model-derived wind speed. Compared to recent observations from other temperate continental shelves during winter period, the Aegean Sea acts as a moderate to rather strong sink for atmospheric CO2.Further investigations, including intensive spatial and temporal high-resolution observations, are necessary to elucidate the role of the Aegean Sea in the process of transfer of atmospheric CO2 into the deep horizons of the Eastern Mediterranean.  相似文献

The study of the fine structure of the phosphorus and silicon distribution in near-bottom layers and in the interstitial water of the sediments has been carried out in the different Baltic Sea regions (Gulf of Finland, Bornholm, Gotland). The data of this study are used to calculate the flows and effective transport coefficients for mineral phosphorus and silicon exchange processes between sediment and near-bottom layer. The values of nutrient flows varied depending on sediment type from 9.8 to 632 μg-at. m−2 year−1 for phosphorus and from 232.4 to 1881.1 μg-at. m−2 year−1 for silicon. The dependence of the effective transport coefficients versus the distance from the bottom (h) is expressed by empirically-derived equation: Keff = Ah−b. The values of constants “A” and “b” depend on the hydrochemical conditions, sediment type and hydrophysical conditions in the near-bottom layers. Calculated constants for regions are discussed.  相似文献

The effect of monsoon, coastal current and temperature on the distribution and seasonal variations of Calanus sinicus abundance were studied. The samples from the northwest continental shelf of South China Sea were collected with 505 μm planktonic nets from July 2006 to October 2007. The abundance of C. sinicus made up 34.28% and 12.34% of all copepods in spring and summer, respectively. The distribution of C. sinicus varied seasonally and regionally. The distribution of C. sinicus ranged between east inshore and offshore waters from the Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island, with a mean of 23.00 (±77.78) ind. m−3 in spring. In summer it had a mean of 13.74 (±45.10) ind. m−3 occurring only in the east inshore waters from Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island. C. sinicus was not abundant during autumn and winter seasons. The surveyed area was divided into three sub-regions based on topographical analysis and water mass, region I (included the east inshore waters of Leizhou Peninsula), region II (included the east inshore waters of Hainan Island) and region III (included the offshore waters from Leizhou Peninsula to Hainan Island). The average abundance of C. sinicus within region I was determined to be 115.63 (±145.93) and 68.12 (±84.00) ind. m−3 in spring and summer, respectively, values higher than those of regions II and III. Our findings suggested that C. sinicus was transported from the East China Sea to the northwest continental shelf of South China Sea by the Guangdong Coastal Current, which was driven by the northeast monsoon in spring. The presence of a cold eddy, in addition to coastal upwelling driven by the southwest monsoon, provided suitable survival conditions for C. sinicus in summer. This species disappeared in autumn due to high temperatures (>27 °C) and did not begin to enter into the northwest continental shelf of South China Sea from the East China Sea during the period of investigation in winter. The frequency of C. sinicus was low in region III during the year as a result of the South China Sea Warm Current and pelagic waters with high temperature during the spring and summer months.  相似文献
