We describe the principles of design of distributed thermoprofilometers and analyze their characteristics and the required hardware, algorithms, and software. The capabilities of these instruments in the investigation of temperature fields, vertical displacements, and the parameters of internal waves are evaluated. We develop a method for the evaluation of inclinations of the level, which enables one to find them with high accuracy. The reliability of this method is tested by comparing the numerical solutions for inclinations of the level with analytic expressions. It is shown that the system of coupled equations for inclinations of the level can be decomposed into two independent equations with sufficiently high accuracy. Translated by Peter V. We study the possibilities of the method of laser diagnostics of the composition of multicomponent electrolytic solutions. In our experiments, we used a four-mirror phase-retarded interferometer operating at three wavelengths from the visible range. For three-component solutions of chloride salts, we determined partial sensitivities of the measuring system to changes in the concentrations of each electrolyte for each of the indicated wavelengths. We study the influence of floating broken ice on the mean nonzero displacements of liquid particles in nonlinear running surface waves. On the basis of the many-year-average seasonal data array of temperature and salinity presented on a scale of one-degree averaging, by using a special quantitative criterion, we reveal a climatic frontal zone and determine both its physical and hydrological characteristics (such as the length width, and thickness of the frontal layer and the temperature, salinity, and density gradients) and its geographic coordinates. We study the problem of flow around an ellipsoidal body submerged in a liquid half space and obtain the solution for the free wave surface. We discuss the results of analysis of published data and field and laboratory investigations aimed at the solution of the problem of comparabilityof the results of detection of hydrogen sulfide in the Black Sea by spectrophotometric and iodometric methods. We show that the reproducibility of the results of spectrophotometric analysis is higher than hat of the iodometric method only in the case where the content of sulfide in a sample is less than 10–30 μMl−1. When larger concentrations are involved, the traditional iodometric analysis proves to be the most precise and reliable method for the detection of hydrogen sulfide in the Black-Sea waters. On the basis of the analysis of the data of hydrological observations, we construct an empirical dependence of the vertical heat fluxQ on the temperature gradientT z . The integral advective-diffusive transfer is taken into account by the method of Kolesnikov. We obtain a generalized dependence of the coefficient of vertical thermal diffusivityK z onT z and note that the well-known Rossby-Montgomery relation and Kolesnikov formula are its special cases. We propose a method for the adaptive numerical analysis of current velocities in a basin including a shelf zone and having a lengthy open boundary with the sea, at which the current velocity is not given. This method is based on a multilayer quasiisopycnic model. We use an approach according to which one introduces additional terms of the source type into the equations of heat and salt transfer and the equation of evolution of the thicknesses of layers. We describe the results of calculations of the current velocities in the northwest part of the Black Sea in June on the basis of climatic data. We analyze oscillations of the Black Sea level at 43 points in the north part of the coast. At some points, the data of every-day measurements are accumulated for more than 100 years. Actually, at all points with minor exceptions, we observe a general trend toward an increase in the sea level. We study the procedures aimed at decreasing the dynamic errors of the evaluation of salinity with the help ofCTD-probes by reducing the difference between the amplitude-phase characteristics of temperature and conductivity sensors. This is attained by introducing a delay between the times of scanning the sensors. To make the amplitude characteristics as close as possible, we propose to use temperature sensors distributed in the direction of probing. We present the procedures used to determine the optimal parameters of temperature sensors and the length of time delay.
