Summary. Magnetic extracts were prepared from samples of Upper Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous pelagic limestones from France and Spain. Thermomagnetic analysis of the magnetic extracts using a microbalance required careful monitoring of base weight changes during heating. Heating in argon gas atmosphere induced production of magnetite during heating while slight oxidation occurred during heating in air. the dominant Curie temperature detected by the thermomagnetic analyses was the 585°C Curie temperature of magnetite. the 680°C Curie temperature of haematite was only detected when isothermal remanent magnetism (IRM) data indicated large concentrations of haematite. Even when IRM data indicated its presence, the thermomagnetic analyses did not detect the Neel temperature of goethite. Although thermomagnetic analyses of magnetic extracts provide more direct identification of the dominant, strongly ferromagnetic minerals, IRM acquisition and subsequent thermal demagnetization is a superior technique in detecting high coercivity, weakly ferromagnetic minerals such as goethite and haematite.

The magnetic behaviour of hydrothermally synthesized greigite was analysed in the temperature range from 4 K to 700 °C. Below room temperature, hysteresis parameters were determined as a function of temperature, with emphasis on the temperature range below 50 K. Saturation magnetization and initial susceptibility were studied above room temperature, along with X-ray diffraction analysis of material heated to various temperatures. The magnetic behaviour of synthetic greigite on heating is determined by chemical alteration rather than by magnetic unblocking. Heating in air yields more discriminative behaviour than heating in argon. When heated in air, the amount of oxygen available for reaction with greigite determines the products and magnetic behaviour. In systems open to contact with air, haematite is the final reaction product. When the contact with air is restricted, magnetite is the final reaction product. When air is excluded, pyrrhotite and magnetite are the final reaction products; the amount of magnetite formed is determined by the purity of the starting greigite and the degree of its surficial oxidation. The saturation magnetization of synthetic greigite is virtually independent of temperature from room temperature down to 4 K. The saturation remanent magnetization increases slowly by 20–30 per cent on cooling from room temperature to 4 K. A broad maximum is observed at ~10 K which may be diagnostic of greigite. The coercive and remanent coercive force both increase smoothly with decreasing temperature to 4 K. The coercive force increases from ~50 mT at room temperature to approximately 100–120 mT at 4 K, and the remanent coercive force increases from approximately 50–80 mT at room temperature to approximately 110–180 mT at 4 K.

Rock magnetic parameters are often used to recognize variations in the original magnetic mineralogy and for normalizing purposes in palaeointensity studies. Incipient weathering, however, is shown to have a profound but partly reversible influence on the rock magnetic properties of the marls of the Early Pliocene Trubi formation in southern Sicily (Italy). The remanence in the marls resides in single-domain (SD) magnetite grains, but the remanent coercive force (Hcr) shows a strong variation and most values observed are anomalously high ( Hcr) range 36–188 mT).
The enhanced coercivities are attributed to stress in the magnetite grains induced by surface oxidation at low temperature. Upon heating to 150 °C a reduction of coercivities occurs that can be explained by a stress reduction as a result of a reduction of Fe2- gradient due to a higher diffusion rate at elevated temperature. After heating to 150 °C, coercivities are quite uniform throughout the outcrop and the values are characteristic of SD magnetite (Hcr range 30–38 mT). The bulk susceptibility increases by 4–24 per cent, and the isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) decreases by 5–11 per cent. The increase in anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM) is large: 20–242 per cent. The magnitude of the changes is related to the degree of weathering.
Another effect of heating the marl samples to 150 °C is a substantial reduction of the coercivities of the secondary overprint in the natural remanent magnetization. After heating. separation of the secondary and primary components by alternating-field demagnetization is more efficient. The usual difficulties of thermal demagnetization above 300 °C may thus be avoided by a combination of moderate heating to 150 °C and subsequent alternating-field demagnetization.

About six separately orientated cores were collected at each of 14 sites distributed throughout the arcuate, west-dipping, 6  km thick, Freetown layered igneous complex. Alternating field and thermal demagnetization both isolate a stable component of remanent magnetism which corresponds to a palaeomagnetic south pole from 13 sites (nine reverse, four normal polarity) at 82.9°S, +32.7°E ( α 95 = 5.6°). This is indistinguishable from that reported in 1971 based on alternating field demagnetization of cores from 10 orientated hand samples.
The difference between the Freetown pole (age: 193 ± 3  Ma) and other mid-Jurassic poles from West Africa could be due to its greater age. The difference between the whole West African Jurassic pole group and the Karoo pole from southern Africa, however, suggests moderate (∼10°) differential rotation of West Africa relative to the Kaapvaal craton.
A prevalent magnetic foliation fabric coincides generally with the petrological layering, as might be expected, but a ubiquitous magnetic lineation is predominantly down-dip. This is compatible with a down-dip pyroxene lineation reported to be present in some field outcrops, and interpreted in terms of late-stage deformation during the slow crystallization and cooling of the large igneous body. However, a fold test shows that the igneous layering had already achieved its present attitude before the Complex cooled to ∼570 °C (the maximum blocking temperature of the characteristic remanence).

The magnetostratigraphy of five new sections through the Neogene Siwalik Group of Nepal is presented. Rock magnetic experiments and detailed thermal demagnetization experiments prove that haematite is the carrier of a primary DRM or a PDRM. After stepwise thermal demagnetization of specimens from all sections, directions of characteristic remanent magnetization were obtained. The results show a positive reversal test and exhibit inclination errors of about 20. Due to gaps in exposures and extremely variable demagnetization behaviour of the haematite-bearing sediments, the resulting polarity sequences are poorly defined for some parts of the sections. However, double-sampled parts of some sections yield similar results. A correlation with the Surai Khola section (Appel, Rösler & Corvinus 1991) is proposed, based on rock magnetic parameters. AMS results from three of the sections prove the existence of primary sedimentary magnetic fabrics in these sections with systematic orientations of minimum and maximum susceptibility axes. Correlation with a standard polarity timescale indicates that the ages of all new sections lie within the age limits of the Surai Khola section.

A detailed record of mineral magnetic properties of a loess–palaeosol profile comprising seven loess horizons, six interbedded palaeosols and recent soil at the top in NE Bulgaria is analysed. A strong contrast between the soil and loess susceptibilities as well as other concentration-dependent hysteresis parameters is present, similar to the well-documented magnetic characteristics of the Chinese loess ( Hus & Han 1992 ; Maher & Thompson 1992 ; Heller & Evans 1995 ; Hunt et al. 1995 ). The magnetic enhancement of the palaeosol units is caused by very fine-grained pedogenic magnetite with superparamagnetic behaviour. Thermomagnetic analyses on bulk material suggest magnetite and maghemite as the main ferrimagnetic carriers in both soil and loess horizons. Their relative proportions are shown to reflect different palaeoclimatic conditions. Chernozem soils, which include recent soil S0 and first and second palaeosols S1 and S2 developed under steppe vegetation, show a high degree of low-temperature oxidation of the pedogenic magnetite to maghemite. This material is characterized by coercive force H c showing even higher values than those of the parent loess material. The older palaeosols (S4 to S6 ) were formed during more humid climatic conditions and therefore probably developed as forest types. Rock magnetic data suggest the existence here of only partly oxidized magnetite grains. The behaviour of the thermomagnetic curves, characterized by a kink at 200 °C, may be due to either a release of internal stress (built up as a result of partial low-temperature oxidation) or interactions between two phases.

A high-quality aeromagnetic survey of northern Brittany (line spacing 250  m; flight elevation 150  m) has been used to delineate the Lower Carboniferous St Malo dyke swarm in detail. The dyke swarm fans at its northern and southern ends, and is affected by N60° sinistral transcurrent faults. After restoration of these offsets, the full structure trends in a N–S direction. Small dykes are not imaged, and only one-third of the swarm is evidenced by magnetism. Gravity and magnetic modelling shows that the swarm overlies a single N–S elongated magma chamber.
The distribution of K max inclinations of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) suggests that the dykes display a fanning magma flow in section. Computed K max inclinations are usually shallower than the measured geological dips, probably because the flow becomes more disturbed as the dyke becomes shallower. We observe that the mean susceptibility values increase when the magma flow is steeper than about 70°.
A detailed cross-section of St Briac dyke, which is part of the St Malo dyke swarm, reveals that the main carrier of magnetization is magnetite in the centre of the dyke and magnetite + maghaemite on its rims. The emplacement of the St Malo dyke swarm could have been contemporaneous with the N60° shearing which displaced the dyke swarm by about 20  km. The dyke swarm is cut at its southern end by an E–W-orientated fault which probably acted during Late Carboniferous times.

Repeated laboratory-induced weak mechanical shocking ( c .  0.57  kg  m  s1 ) of marine sandstone samples showing drilling-induced remanence, from commercial bore cores from the North Sea and Prudhoe Bay, causes increases in their low-field susceptibility ( χ ) and their ability to acquire an isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM). These enhancements are reduced by some 20 per cent by AF demagnetization in 100  mT. Doubling the intensity of the shock doubles the susceptibilities and IRMs acquired. The susceptibility increase ceases after 300 to 400 shocks for the North Sea samples and 20 to 30 shocks for those from Prudhoe Bay, while the IRM saturates after 800–1000 and 30–50 shocks respectively. Continental, haematite-bearing sandstones from commercial bore cores with no drilling-induced remanence subjected to the same shocks do not show these effects. Differences in the magnetic mineralogy of shocked and unshocked marine samples suggest that the magnetic enhancement is predominantly due to the creation of pyrrhotite by shock-induced irreversible crystallographic changes in iron-bearing sulphides. When shocked during commercial drilling, these new ferromagnetic minerals acquire strong chemical (crystalline) remanences, associated with a wide spectrum of grain sizes, in the magnetic field of the drill string, and these are resistant to both thermal and AF demagnetization. Similar processes are likely in any situation involving the shock of physically metastable iron-bearing minerals, particularly anoxic sediments. A 5  cm non-magnetic collar between the drill stem and crown should drastically reduce the magnetic intensity of this effect under commercial conditions, but would not prevent its occurrence.

A continental sequence of red beds and interbedded basaltic layers crops out in the Sierra Chica of Córdoba Province, Argentina (31.5°S, 64.4°W). This succession was deposited in a half-graben basin during the Early Cretaceous. We have carried out a palaeomagnetic survey on outcrops of this basin (147 sites in seven localities). From an analysis of IRM acquisition curves and detailed demagnetization behaviour, three different magnetic components are identified in the volcanic rocks: components A, B and X are carried by single- or pseudo-single-domain (titano) magnetite, haematite and multidomain magnetite, respectively. Component A is interpreted as a primary component of magnetization because it passes conglomerate, contact, tilt and reversal tests. The carrier of the primary magnetization, fine-grained (titano)magnetite, is present in basalts with a high degree of deuteric oxidation. This kind of oxidation is interpreted to have occurred during cooling. Components B and X are discarded because they are interpreted as recent magnetizations. In the sedimentary rocks, haematite and magnetite are identified as the carriers of remanence. Both minerals carry the same component, which passes a reversal test. The calculated palaeomagnetic pole, based on 55 sites, is Lat. 86.0°S, Long. 75.9°E ( A 95=3.3, K =35). This palaeomagnetic pole supersedes four with anomalous positions reported in previous papers.

TRM deviations in anisotropic assemblages of multidomain magnetite
Anisotropic assemblages of multidomain magnetite particles develop an anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS), which in turn induces deviations of thermo-remanent magnetization (TRM) from the field direction. From the theories of multidomain TRM acquisition, it is shown that the TRM anisotropy tensor has its eigenvalue ratios ( T i) related to the principal weak-field susceptibility ratios ( P i) by the order of magnitude T i≃ P 2i. This relation has been experimentally verified on two sets of highly anisotropic rock samples. The exponent has been determined to be 1.94 in the samples from a Peruvian gabbro, and 1.81 in those from the granite of Flamanville (NW France). Accounting for experimental difficulties in determining the TRM anisotropy tensors, these exponents are judged to agree well with the expected one. It is therefore stressed that AMS measurements provide a good means of evaluating the magnetic field direction from deviated TRM directions, providing magnetic carriers are mainly multidomain magnetites.

Here we report our recent magnetic fabric investigation of loess deposition in Shagou section, located at the northeastern Qilian Mountains, the northeastern rim of the Tibetan Plateau. On the basis of environmental magnetism data, we indicate that the variation of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) parameters, especially the foliation (F) and degree of anisotropy (P), might be more sensitive to the environmental change in the arid and semiarid regions than the magnetic susceptibility fluctuation. During the investigated interval, from 0.83 to 0.128 Ma, most of the middle to late Pleistocene significant climate change can be unraveled by the AMS parameters, such as the strengthening of cold/dry climate, the step drying event occurred nearly 250 ka, and the severe environmental change in MIS16. Our results also suggest that there is strong correlation between median diameter (Md) of grain size, F, and P. We propose that the AMS parameters can act as an important paleoenvironmental change indicator in the arid and semiarid regions.

Magnetic fabric was determined by applying the anisotropy from the low-field magnetic susceptibility (AMS) technique in 62 mafic dykes from the Mesozoic Florianópolis (Santa Catarina Island) dyke swarm, southern Brazil. These dykes cut the crystalline basement rocks, which are mainly Proterozoic. They are vertical or subvertical in dip and trend mainly NE, although NW-trending dykes are also found. Dykes are tholeiitic in composition and are geochemically similar to those from the Ponta Grossa swarm. Thicknesses vary from 0.3 to 60 m. Polished sections show that titanomagnetites carry the AMS in these dykes. Hysteresis parameters show that the magnetic minerals fall in the PSD range. Two types of magnetic fabric are recognized. Type I is characterized by K 1- K 2 parallel to the dyke wall, representing magma flow within the dykes; type II, with K 1- K 3 parallel to the dyke wall, was found in four dykes. Type I is found in 94 per cent of the dykes, and approximately 20 per cent of these have K 1 inclinations of less than 30°, suggesting horizontal or subhorizontal flow. About 80 per cent have K 1 inclinations of greater than 30°, due to inclined to vertical flow. The comparison of AMS studies from both the Florianópolis and the Ponta Grossa dykes suggests a source position closer to Santa Catarina Island than the Ponta Grossa arch.

In this paper, the mechanisms of low-temperature demagnetization of remanence in multidomain magnetite are considered. New experimental observations of the behaviour of the saturation isothermal remanence, thermoremanence and partial thermoremanence at low temperatures are presented. The results show that there are two main contributions to this low-temperature demagnetization. The first and predominant contribution (type-1 demagnetization) is due to 'kinematic' domain state reorganization and occurs throughout cooling from room temperature to the Verwey transition, T v , at 120–124  K. The second contribution arises from the change in anisotropy from cubic to monoclinic at T v , which changes the overall domain structure of the grain. On warming in zero field, some domain walls will not return to their original positions but will take up a position that leads to a lower net remanence (type-2 demagnetization). In stoichiometric magnetite, demagnetization does not occur at 130  K at the isotropic point, T k , contrary to some previous predictions. In non-stoichiometric magnetite, the influence of the Verwey transition is greatly reduced, and anomalous behaviour is observed at T k .

Mineral and isothermal magnetic properties of Al-, Mn- and Ni-substituted haematites were characterized and their relationships evaluated in order to interpret better the results of magnetic analyses of soils and recent sediments. Aluminium, manganese and nickel haematites generally behaved as single-domain (SD) particles. The influence of incorporated Al on the magnetic behaviour of haematite was consistent with Al acting as a paramagnetic dilutent. Mass magnetic susceptibility ( χ ) and SIRM800 decreased as the level of Al substitution increased. Incorporation of Mn and Ni increased χ , which could be associated with enhancement of the spin canting effect of haematite. The stability of SIRM800 to demagnetization for Al-haematite appears to be related to a defect mechanism associated with the development of smaller crystallites arising from Al substitution. Magnetic domain rotation or flipping was probably inhibited, being blocked by structural defects during magnetization and demagnetization, and resulted in a low but stable partial SIRM (SIRM800 ). %IRM/SIRM800 demagnetization curves and estimated ( B o )CR values of ≤100  mT for Mn-haematite indicate pseudo-single-domain/multidomain-like behaviour despite Mn-haematite having particle and crystallite dimensions similar to Ni-haematite, which did not show this behaviour. Data indicate that parameters involving unsaturated, partial SIRM should be used with caution in magnetic studies of soils and sediments.

Detailed palaeomagnetic integrated with rock magnetic studies have been carried out on a loess-palaeosol sequence in Baoji, Shaanxi province, southern Chinese Loess Plateau. For most samples stepwise thermal demagnetization revealed two well-defined magnetization components. A low-temperature component (LTC), which was isolated between 100 and 200 °C, is consistent with the present geomagnetic field direction. A high-temperature component (HTC), which was isolated between 250 and 620–680 °C, shows normal, reversed or transitional polarities. Our new magnetostatigraphy revealed two distinct geomagnetic excursions recorded in loess unit of L5 and palaeosol unit of S7, respectively, and the Matuyama-Brunhes (M-B) polarity boundary in loess unit of L8. Rock magnetic experiments demonstrated that the specimens from the excursion zones have the same magnetic properties as those from the Brunhes normal or Matuyama reversed polarity zones. Measurements of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) showed that the sediments have primary sedimentary fabrics. Based on the palaeoclimatological and magnetostratigraphic age models, the middle Brunhes excursion in loess L5 is dated at 413–433 ka, and the early Brunhes excursion is estimated to occur 23–33 ka after the M-B reversal. Comparing with previously reported geomagnetic excursions in the Brunhes chron, the middle Brunhes excursion (L5) is likely global. For the early Brunhes excursion (S7), we need further studies to examine its global occurrence.

The deep drill hole SG6 in western Siberia (66°N, 78.5°E) penetrated 1.1  km of lower Triassic basalts, which are possibly an extension of the central Siberian Permo– Triassic flood basalt province. About 300 samples of these basalts were progressively demagnetized and measured. Principal component analysis often shows multiple magnetizations carried by haematite and magnetite. The corrected mean inclinations are +77° and −77° for the haematite component. A magnetostratigraphic scale was derived and showed a N–R–N–R–N succession. This is quite different from the Noril'sk and Taimyr typical polarity scale, R–N.
The basalts found in the SG6 deep drill hole are slightly younger than those of central Siberia and Taimyr. They correspond to middle–upper Induan age, whereas the Noril'sk and Taimyr sections correspond to an uppermost Permian and lower Induan age. Altogether they indicate that, after a high output rate of volcanic material near the Permo–Triassic boundary, this activity slowed down drastically on the Siberian platform and Taimyr, but persisted for several million years in western Siberia.
