Fixed nitrogen is a key nutrient involved in regulating global marine productivity and hence the global oceanic carbon cycle. Oceanic nitrogen (N2) fixation is estimated to supply 8×1012 moles N y?1 to the ocean, approximately equal to current riverine and the atmospheric inputs of fixed N, and between 50 and 100% of current estimates of oceanic denitrification. However, the spatial and temporal variability of N2 fixation remains uncertain, mostly because of the normal low resolution sampling for diazotroph distribution and fixation rates. It is well established that N2 fixation, mediated by the enzyme nitrogenase, is a source of hydrogen (H2), but the extent to which it leads to supersaturation of H2 in oceanic waters is unresolved. Here, we present simultaneous measurements of upper ocean dissolved H2 concentration (nmol L?1), and rates of N2 fixation (μmol N m?3 d?1), determined using 15N2 tracer techniques (at 7 or 15 m), on a transect from Fiji to Hawaii. We find a significant correlation (r=0.98) between dissolved H2 and rates of N2 fixation, with the greatest supersaturation of H2 and highest rates of N2 fixation being observed in the subtropical gyres at the southern (~18°S) and northern (18°N) reaches of the transect. The lowest H2 saturation and N2 fixation were observed in the equatorial region between 8°S and 14°N. We propose that an empirical relationship between H2 supersaturations and N2 fixation measurements could be used to guide sampling for 15N fixation measurements or to aid the spatial interpolation of such measurements.  相似文献

The vertical sinking flux of particulate Al, Fe, Pb, and Ba from the upper 250 m of the Labrador Sea has been estimated from measurements of 234Th/238U disequilibrium and the respective metal/234Th ratios in >53 μm size particles. 234Th-derived particulate metal fluxes include in situ scavenged metals, labile lithogenic metals, and metals derived from external input (e.g., atmospheric supply). In contrast to the POC/234Th ratio, particle size-fractionated (0.4–10 μm, 10–53 μm, and >53 μm) Al/234Th, Fe/234Th and Pb/234Th, and Ba/234Th ratios generally increase with depth and exhibit no systematic change with particle diameter. Sinking fluxes of particulate Al (2.47–22.3 μmol m−2 d−1), Fe (2.69–16.3 μmol m−2 d−1), Pb (2.85–70 nmol m−2 d−1), and Ba (0.13–2.1 μmol m−2 d−1) at 50 m (base of the euphotic zone) and 100 m (base of the mixed layer) are largely within the range of previous sediment trap results from other ocean basins. Estimates of the upper ocean residence time of Al (0.07–0.28 yr) and Pb (0.8–2.9 yr) are short compared to previously reported values. The settling rate of >53 μm particles calculated from the 234Th data ranges from 14 to 38 m d−1.  相似文献

We studied the seasonal, diel, and vertical distribution of phytoplankton N2 fixation to understand the relative contributions of unicellular and filamentous nitrogen fixers (diazotrophs) to N2 fixation and nitrogen recycling in the northern South China Sea (SCS) and the neighboring upstream Kuroshio. N2-fixation rates were measured by the 15N2 tracer technique (addition by bubble) on unicellular (<10 or 20 µm) and the filamentous diazotrophs (>10 or 20 µm, mostly Trichodesmium and Richelia) fractionated by 10- or 20-µm mesh sizes. The mean depth-integrated total (unicellular+filamentous) N2-fixation rates in the SCS (51.7±6.2 µmol N m−2 d−1) averaged 1/3 of that in the Kuroshio (142.7±29.6 µmol N m−2 d−1), with higher rates in the winter than in other seasons in the SCS and the opposite seasonal pattern in the Kuroshio. Unicellular diazotrophs contributed 65% of the total N2 fixation in the SCS, which were negatively correlated with surface temperature and, as for total N2 fixation, were higher in the winter when Trichodesmium spp. were scarce. In comparison, the unicellular diazotrophs contributed 50% of total N2 fixation in the Kuroshio, and their contributions were not significantly correlated with surface temperature. In both the SCS and the Kuroshio, the unicellular N2 fixation was more important during the night than during the day, and in the deep euphotic layer than in the surface layer, even in the daytime. Our results show that the unicellular diazotrophs were important N2 fixers and contributed significantly to N2 fixation in the tropical marginal seas, more so in the SCS than the Kuroshio.  相似文献

To reveal spatial dynamics of silicic acid [Si(OH)4] in the poorly sampled oligotrophic western North Pacific, we investigated the surface distribution of Si(OH)4 and associated biogeochemical parameters by using an underway survey system with a highly sensitive nutrient analyzer along the 138°E transect (between 30 and 34°N) and the 155°E transect (between 10 and 35°N) during the summers of 2007 and 2008. Surface Si(OH)4 concentrations ranged from the detection limit (11 nmol L−1) to 2462 nmol L−1. High Si(OH)4 concentrations (>1000 nmol L−1) and dynamic fluctuations were generally observed north of 23°N, while consistently stable low concentrations of 415–751 nmol L−1 were observed south of 23°N. Surface nitrate+nitrite (N+N) and phosphate (PO43−) were typically depleted to <20 nmol L−1, except for PO43− in the area south of 16°N. The majority of the study area was characterized by high-Si(OH)4 and low-N+N and PO43−. However, submesoscale/mesoscale depressions of Si(OH)4 were locally observed in the cyclonic eddy fields north of 23°N. Among a total of six Si(OH)4 depressions within the eddies, a complete Si(OH)4 depletion (<11 nmol L−1) was observed on the cyclonic side near the Kuroshio axis (33.1°N, 138°E). This depletion was closely coupled with a diatom bloom, suggesting that Si(OH)4 was exhausted by diatoms. All of the Si(OH)4 depressions were selective and not accompanied by local depressions of N+N and PO43−. This unique phenomenon might be driven by biogeochemical processes such as selective Si export (Si pump), anomalous Si uptake associated with diatom physiology, and/or Si uptake supported by N2 fixation.  相似文献

Measurements of nitrate and ammonium in precipitation and associated with aerosols were conducted at Rutgers University Marine Field Station in Tuckerton, New Jersey from March 2004 to March 2005 to characterize atmospheric nitrogen deposition to the Mullica River-Great Bay Estuary. The arithmetic means of nitrate and ammonium concentrations for precipitation samples were 2.3 mg L−1 and 0.42 mg L−1, respectively. Nitrate and ammonium concentrations in aerosol samples averaged 3.7 μg m−3 and 1.6 μg m−3, respectively. Wet deposition rates appeared to vary with season; the highest rate of inorganic nitrogen deposition (nitrate + ammonium) occurred in the spring with an average value of 1.33 kg-N ha−2 month−1. On an annual basis, the total (wet and dry) direct atmospheric deposition fluxes into the Mullica River-Great Bay Estuary were 7.08 kg-N ha−2 year−1 for nitrate and 4.44 kg-N ha−2 year−1 for ammonium. The total atmospheric inorganic nitrogen directly deposited to the Mullica River-Great Bay Estuary was estimated to be 4.79 × 104 kg-N year−1, and the total atmospheric inorganic nitrogen deposited to the Mullica River watershed was estimated to be 1.69 × 106 kg-N year−1. Only a fraction of the nitrogen deposited on the watershed will actually reach the estuary; most of the nitrogen will be retained in the watershed due to utilization and denitrification during transport. The amount of N reaching the Mullica River-Great Bay Estuary indirectly is estimated to be 5.07 × 104 kg-N year−1, approximately 97% is retained within the watershed. This atmospheric nitrogen deposition may stimulate phytoplankton productivity in the Mullica River-Great Bay ecosystem.  相似文献

Current estimates point to a mismatch of particulate organic carbon supply derived from the surface ocean and the microbial organic carbon demand in the meso- and bathypelagic realm. Based on recent findings that chemoautotrophic Crenarchaeota are abundant in the mesopelagic zone, we quantified dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) fixation in the meso- and bathypelagic North Atlantic and compared it with heterotrophic microbial activity. Measuring 14C-bicarbonate fixation and 3H-leucine incorporation revealed that microbial DIC fixation is substantial in the mesopelagic water masses, ranging from 0.1 to 56.7 μmol C m−3 d−1, and is within the same order of magnitude as heterotrophic microbial activity. Integrated over the dark ocean’s water column, DIC fixation ranged from 1–2.5 mmol C m−2 d−1, indicating that chemoautotrophy in the dark ocean represents a significant source of autochthonously produced ‘new organic carbon’ in the ocean’s interior amounting to about 15–53% of the phytoplankton export production. Hence, chemoautotrophic DIC fixation in the oxygenated meso- and bathypelagic water column of the North Atlantic might substantially contribute to the organic carbon demand of the deep-water microbial food web.  相似文献

Highly sensitive STOX O2 sensors were used for determination of in situ O2 distribution in the eastern tropical north and south Pacific oxygen minimum zones (ETN/SP OMZs), as well as for laboratory determination of O2 uptake rates of water masses at various depths within these OMZs. Oxygen was generally below the detection limit (few nmol L−1) in the core of both OMZs, suggesting the presence of vast volumes of functionally anoxic waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Oxygen was often not detectable in the deep secondary chlorophyll maximum found at some locations, but other secondary maxima contained up to ~0.4 µmol L−1. Directly measured respiration rates were high in surface and subsurface oxic layers of the coastal waters, reaching values up to 85 nmol L−1 O2 h−1. Substantially lower values were found at the depths of the upper oxycline, where values varied from 2 to 33 nmol L−1 O2 h−1. Where secondary chlorophyll maxima were found the rates were higher than in the oxic water just above. Incubation times longer than 20 h, in the all-glass containers, resulted in highly increased respiration rates. Addition of amino acids to the water from the upper oxycline did not lead to a significant initial rise in respiration rate within the first 20 h, indicating that the measurement of respiration rates in oligotrophic Ocean water may not be severely affected by low levels of organic contamination during sampling. Our measurements indicate that aerobic metabolism proceeds efficiently at extremely low oxygen concentrations with apparent half-saturation concentrations (Km values) ranging from about 10 to about 200 nmol L−1.  相似文献

JGOFS-KERFIX (KERguelen point FIXe) time-series station, located south of the polar front in the Indian sector of the Antarctic Ocean, was occupied monthly between January 1990 and March 1995. Annual cycles of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TALK), oxygen (O2) and nutrients (nitrate, silicate, phosphate and ammonia) in the upper ocean are presented for this site. From seasonal drawdown of nutrients and DIC, we estimate a spring–summer net community production of 3.2±0.5 mol m−2 and C/N/P ratios of 100/16/1. The Si/N ratio varies between 1.8 and 3, suggesting low iron concentrations. The spring–summer biogenic silicon export derived from silicate drawdown is 1.18 mol m−2, consistent with model estimates of silicate export at this site. Seasonal and interannual variations of oxygen, nitrate and DIC due to physical and biological processes are quantified using a simple month-to-month budget formulation. From these budgets, an annual net community production of 5.7±3.3 mol m−2 yr−1 is estimated, about twice the averaged spring–summer production, indicating that, at KERFIX, there is a positive net community production throughout the year. Air–sea CO2 fluxes show that KERFIX is a strong CO2 sink for the atmosphere of 2.4–5.1 mol m−2 yr−1 in 1993, depending on the gas exchange formulation used. A 2.1–3.3 mol m−2 yr−1 outgassing of O2 is observed at KERFIX except in 1993 and 1994 where a decreasing trend of temperature induces an increase of O2 solubility.  相似文献

Sulfate reduction rate measurements by the 35SO42− core injection method were carried out in situ with a benthic lander, LUISE, and in parallel by shipboard incubations in sediments of the Black Sea. Eight stations were studied along a transect from the Romanian shelf to the deep western anoxic basin. The highest rates measured on an areal basis for the upper 0–15 cm were 1.97 mmol m−2 d−1 on the shelf and 1.54 mmol m−2 d−1 at 181 m water depth just below the chemocline. At all stations sulfate reduction rates decreased to values <3 nmol cm−3 d−1 below 15 cm depth in the sediment. The importance of sulfate reduction relative to the total mineralization of organic matter was very low, 6%, on the inner shelf, which was paved with mussels, and increased to 47% on the outer shelf at 100 m depth. Where the oxic–anoxic interface of the water column impinged on the sea floor at around 150 m depth, the contribution of sulfate reduction increased from >50% just above the chemocline to 100% just below. In the deep sea, mean sulfate reduction rates were 0.6 mmol m−2 d−1 corresponding to an organic carbon oxidation of 1.3 mmol m−2 d−1. This is close to the mean sedimentation rate of organic carbon over the year in the western basin. A comparison with published data on sulfate reduction in Black Sea sediments showed that the present results tend to be higher in shelf sediments and lower in the deep-sea than most other data. Based on the present water column H2S inventory and the H2S flux out of the sediment, the calculated turnover time of H2S below the chemocline is 2100 years.  相似文献

Aerobic NH4+ oxidation rates were measured along the strong oxygen gradient associated with the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) of the eastern tropical South Pacific off northern Chile (∼20°S) during 2000, 2003, and 2004. This process was examined by comparing NH4+ rates of change during dark incubations, with and without the addition of allylthiourea, a classical inhibitor of the ammonia monooxygenase enzyme of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria. The contribution of aerobic NH4+ oxidation in dark carbon fixation and NO2 rates of change were also explored. Thirteen samples were retrieved from the oxycline (252 to ⩽5 μM O2; 15 to ∼65 m depth) and three from the oxygen minimum core (⩽5 μM O2; 100–200 m depth). Aerobic NH4+ oxidation rates were mainly detected in the upper part (15–30 m depth) of the oxycline, with rates ranging from 0.16 to 0.79 μM d−1, but not towards the oxycline base (40–65 m depth). In the oxygen minimum core, aerobic NH4+ oxidation was in the upper range and higher than in the upper part of the oxycline (0.70 and 1.0 μM d−1). Carbon fixation rates through aerobic NH4+ oxidation ranged from 0.18 to 0.43 μg C L−1 d−1 and contributed between 33% and 57% of the total dark carbon fixation, mainly towards the oxycline base and, in a single experiment, in the upper part of the oxycline. NO2 consumption was high (up to 10 μM d−1) towards the oxycline base and OMZ core, but was significantly reduced in experiments amended with allylthiourea, indicating that aerobic NH4+ oxidation could contribute between 8% and 76% of NO2 production, which in turn could be available for denitrifiers. Overall, these results support the important role of aerobic NH4+ oxidizers in the nitrogen and carbon cycling in the OMZ and at its upper boundary.  相似文献

First data on microbial respiration in the Levantine Sea are reported with the aim of assessing the distribution of oxidative processes in association with the main Mediterranean water masses and the changing physical structure determined by the Eastern Mediterranean Transient. Respiratory rates, in terms of metabolic carbon dioxide production, were estimated from measured electron transport system activities in the polygonal area of the Levantine Sea (32.5–36.5 N Latitude, 26.0–30.25 E Longitude) and at Station Geo’95, in the Ionian Sea (35°34.88 N; 17°14.99 E). At the Levantine Sea, the mean carbon dioxide production rate decreased from the upper to the deeper layers and varied from 22.0±12.4 μg C h−1 m−3 in the euphotic layer to 1.30±0.5 μg C h−1 m−3 in the depth range between 1600 and 3000 m. Significant differences were found among upper, intermediate and bottom layers. The euphotic zone supported a daily carbon dioxide production of 96.6 mg C d−1 m−2 while the aphotic zone (between 200 and 3000 m) sustained a 177.1 mg C d−1 m−2 carbon dioxide production. In Station Geo’95, the carbon dioxide production rates amounted to 170.4 and 102.2 mg C d−1 m−2 in the euphotic and aphotic zones, respectively. The rates determined in the identified water masses showed a tight coupling of respiratory processes and Mediterranean circulation patterns. The increasing respiratory rates in the deep layers of the Levantine Sea are explained by the introduction of younger waters recently formed in the Aegean Sea.  相似文献

An extended time series of particle fluxes at 3800 m was recorded using automated sediment traps moored at Ocean Station Papa (OSP, 50°N, 145°W) in the northeast Pacific Ocean for more than a decade (1982–1993). Time-series observations at 200 and 1000 m, and short-term measurements using surface-tethered free-drifting sediment traps also were made intermittently. We present data for fluxes of total mass (dry weight), particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), biogenic Si (BSi), and particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) in calcium carbonate. Mean monthly fluxes at 3800 m showed distinct seasonality with an annual minimum during winter months (December–March), and maximum during summer and fall (April–November). Fluxes of total mass, POC, PIC and BSi showed 4-, 10-, 7- and 5-fold increases between extreme months, respectively. Mean monthly fluxes of PIC often showed two plateaus, one in May–August dominated by <63 μm particles and one in October–November, which was mainly >63 μm particles. Dominant components of the mass flux throughout the year were CaCO3 and opal in equal amounts. The mean annual fluxes at 3800 m were 32±9 g dry weight g m−2 yr−1, 1.1±0.5 g POC m−2 yr−1, 0.15±0.07 g PON m−2 yr−1, 5.9±2.0 g BSi m−2 yr−1 and 1.7±0.6 g PIC m−2 yr−1. These biogenic fluxes clearly decreased with depth, and increased during “warm” years (1983 and 1987) of the El Niño, Southern Oscillation cycle (ENSO). Enhancement of annual mass flux rates to 3800 m was 49% in 1983 and 36% in 1987 above the decadal average, and was especially rich in biogenic Si. Biological events allowed estimates of sinking rates of detritus that range from 175 to 300 m d−1, and demonstrate that, during periods of high productivity, particles sink quickly to deep ocean with less loss of organic components. Average POC flux into the deep ocean approximated the “canonical” 1% of the surface primary production.  相似文献

The present paper synthesizes data obtained during a multidisciplinary cruise carried out in June 2004 at the continental margin of the northern Bay of Biscay. The data-set allows to describe the different stages of a coccolithophore bloom dominated by Emiliania huxleyi. The cruise was carried out after the main spring phytoplankton bloom that started in mid-April and peaked in mid-May. Consequently, low phosphate (PO4 < 0.2 μM) and silicate (DSi < 2.0 μM) concentrations, low partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) and high calcite saturation degree in surface waters combined with thermal stratification, probably favoured the blooming of coccolithophores. During the period of the year our cruise was carried out, internal tides induce enhanced vertical mixing at the continental shelf break leading to the injection of inorganic nutrients to surface waters that probably trigger the bloom. The bloom developed as the water-column stratified and as the water mass was advected over the continental shelf, following the general residual circulation in the area. The most developed phase of the bloom was sampled in a remote sensed high reflectance (HR) patch over the continental shelf that was characterized by low chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration in surface waters (<1.0 μg L?1), high particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) concentration (~8 μmol L?1) and coccolithophore abundance up to 57 × 106 cells L?1. Transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) concentrations ranged between 15 and 75 μg C L?1 and carbon content of TEP represented up to 26% of the particulate organic carbon (POC; maximum concentration of 15.5 μmol L?1 in the upper 40 m). Integrated primary production (PP) ranged between 210 and 680 mg C m?2 d?1 and integrated calcification (CAL) ranged between 14 and 140 mg C m?2 d?1, within the range of PP and CAL values previously reported during coccolithophore blooms in open and shelf waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. Bacterial protein production (BPP) measurements in surface waters (0.3–0.7 μg C L?1 h?1) were much higher than those reported during early phases of coccolithophore blooms in natural conditions, but similar to those during peak and declining coocolithophorid blooms reported in mesocosms. Total alkalinity anomalies with respect to conservative mixing (ΔTA) down to ?49 μmol kg?1 are consistent with the occurrence of biogenic precipitation of calcite, while pCO2 remained 15–107 μatm lower than atmospheric equilibrium (372 μatm). The correlation between ΔTA and pCO2 suggested that pCO2 increased in part due to calcification, but this increase was insufficient to overcome the background under-saturation of CO2. This is related to the biogeochemical history of the water masses due to net carbon fixation by the successive phytoplankton blooms in the area prior to the cruise, hence, the investigated area remained a sink for atmospheric CO2 despite calcification.  相似文献

Organic carbon fluxes through the sediment/water interface in the high-latitude North Atlantic were calculated from oxygen microprofiles. A wire-operated in situ oxygen bottom profiler was deployed, and oxygen profiles were also measured onboard (ex situ). Diffusive oxygen fluxes, obtained by fitting exponential functions to the oxygen profiles, were translated into organic carbon fluxes and organic carbon degradation rates. The mean Corg input to the abyssal plain sediments of the Norwegian and Greenland Seas was found to be 1.9 mg C m−2 d−1. Typical values at the seasonally ice-covered East Greenland continental margin are between 1.3 and 10.9 mg C m−2 d−1 (mean 3.7 mg C m−2 d−1), whereas fluxes on the East Greenland shelf are considerably higher, 9.1–22.5 mg C m−2 d−1. On the Norwegian continental slope Corg fluxes of 3.3–13.9 mg C m−2 d−1 (mean 6.5 mg C m−2 d−1) were found. Fluxes are considerably higher here compared to stations on the East Greenland slope at similar water depths. By repeated occupation of three sites off southern Norway in 1997 the temporal variability of diffusive O2 fluxes was found to be quite low. The seasonal signal of primary and export production from the upper water column appears to be strongly damped at the seafloor. Degradation rates of 0.004–1.1 mg C cm−3 a−1 at the sediment surface were calculated from the oxygen profiles. First-order degradation constants, obtained from Corg degradation rates and sediment organic carbon content, are in the range 0.03–0.6 a−1. Thus, the corresponding mean lifetime of organic carbon lies between 1.7 and 33.2 years, which also suggests that seasonal variations in Corg flux are small. The data presented here characterize the Norwegian and Greenland Seas as oligotrophic and relatively low organic carbon deep-sea environments.  相似文献

Benthic fluxes of dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, oxygen, nutrients, nitrous oxide and methane were measured in situ at three sites of Río San Pedro salt marsh tidal creek (Bay of Cádiz, SW Spain) during three seasons. This system is affected by the discharges of organic carbon and nutrients from the surrounding aquaculture installations. Sediment oxygen uptake rates and inorganic carbon fluxes ranged respectively from 16 to 79 mmol O2 m? 2 d? 1 and from 48 to 146 mmol C m? 2 d? 1. Benthic alkalinity fluxes were corrected for the influence of NH4+ and NO3? + NO2? fluxes, and the upper and lower limits for carbon oxidation rates were inferred by considering two possible scenarios: maximum and minimum contribution of CaCO3 dissolution to corrected alkalinity fluxes. Average Cox rates were in all cases within ± 25% of the upper and lower limits and ranged from 40 to 122 mmol C m? 2 d? 1. Whereas carbon mineralization did not show significant differences among the sites, Cox rates varied seasonally and were correlated with temperature (r2 = 0.72). During winter and spring denitrification was estimated to account for an average loss of 46% and 75%, respectively, of the potentially recyclable N, whereas during the summer no net removal was observed. A possible shift from denitrification to dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) during this period is argued. Dissolved CH4 and N2O fluxes ranged from 5.7 to 47 μmol CH4 m? 2 d? 1 and 4.3 to 49 μmol N–N2O m? 2 d? 1, respectively, and represented in all cases a small fraction of total inorganic C and N flux. Overall, about 60% of the total particulate organic matter that is discharged into the creek by the main fish farm facility is estimated to degrade in the sediments, resulting in a significant input of nutrients to the system.  相似文献

The latitudinal distributions of phytoplankton biomass, composition and production in the Atlantic Ocean were determined along a 10,000-km transect from 50°N to 50°S in October 1995, May 1996 and October 1996. Highest levels of euphotic layer-integrated chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration (75–125 mg Chl m−2) were found in North Atlantic temperate waters and in the upwelling region off NW Africa, whereas typical Chl a concentrations in oligotrophic waters ranged from 20 to 40 mg Chl m−2. The estimated concentration of surface phytoplankton carbon (C) biomass was 5–15 mg C m−2 in the oligotrophic regions and increased over 40 mg C m−2 in richer areas. The deep chlorophyll maximum did not seem to constitute a biomass or productivity maximum, but resulted mainly from an increase in the Chl a to C ratio and represented a relatively small contribution to total integrated productivity. Primary production rates varied from 50 mg C m−2 d−1 at the central gyres to 500–1000 mg C m−2 d−1 in upwelling and higher latitude regions, where faster growth rates (μ) of phytoplankton (>0.5 d−1) were also measured. In oligotrophic waters, microalgal growth was consistently slow [surface μ averaged 0.21±0.02 d−1 (mean±SE)], representing <20% of maximum expected growth. These results argue against the view that the subtropical gyres are characterized by high phytoplankton turnover rates. The latitudinal variations in μ were inversely correlated to the changes in the depth of the nitracline and positively correlated to those of the integrated nitrate concentration, supporting the case for the role of nutrients in controlling the large-scale distribution of phytoplankton growth rates. We observed a large degree of temporal variability in the phytoplankton dynamics in the oligotrophic regions: productivity and growth rates varied in excess of 8-fold, whereas microalgal biomass remained relatively constant. The observed spatial and temporal variability in the biomass specific rate of photosynthesis is at least three times larger than currently assumed in most satellite-based models of global productivity.  相似文献

As part of a multidisciplinary cruise to the Porcupine Abyssal Plain (PAP) study site (49°00′N 16°30′W), in June and July 2006, observations were made of the vertical nitrate flux due to turbulent mixing. Daily profiles of nitrate and turbulent mixing, at the central PAP site, give a mean nitrate flux into the euphotic zone of 0.09 (95% confidence intervals: 0.05–0.16) mmol N m−2 d−1. This is a factor of 50 lower than the mean observed rate of nitrate uptake within the euphotic zone (5.1±1.3 mmol N m−2 d−1). By using our direct observations to ‘validate’ a previously published parameterisation for turbulent mixing, we further quantify the variability in the vertical turbulent flux across a roughly 100×100 km region centred on the PAP site, using hydrographic data. The flux is uniformly low (0.08±0.26 mmol N m−2 d−1, the large standard deviation being due to a strongly non-Gaussian distribution) and is consistent with direct measurements at the central site. It is demonstrated that on an annual basis convective mixing supplies at least 40-fold more nitrate to the euphotic zone than turbulent mixing at this location. Other processes, such as those related with mesoscale phenomena, may also contribute significantly.  相似文献

Sediment traps were deployed for almost 1 yr at two sites near 178°40′E in 1996–1997 on Chatham Rise (New Zealand). These sites were either side of the Subtropical Front (STF), which is a biologically productive zone, characterised by moderate atmospheric CO2 uptake. At each site, PARFLUX sediment traps (Mk 7G–21) were deployed at 300 and 1000 m in 1500 m water depth. At 42°42′S, north of the STF, approximately 80% of the integrated total mass, POC and biogenic silica flux at 300 m occurred in a 7-day pulse in austral mid-spring (1064, 141 and 6 mg m−2 d−1, respectively, in early October). This pulse was recorded a week later in the 1000 m trap, indicating a particle sinking rate of 100 m d−1. In contrast, at 44°37′S, south of the STF, the main flux of total mass and biogenic silica occurred 3 weeks later in late spring (289 and 3 mg m−2 d−1, respectively, in early November). Organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes were persistently high over spring at the southern site, although total POC flux integrated over 3 months was only 60 mg m−2 d−1. Thus, up to 2–3 times more material was exported north of the STF, compared with fluxes measured <200 km away to the south. As an integrated proportion of the annual total mass flux, however, more organic carbon was exported south of the STF (17% cf. 5–14%). Furthermore, organic material exported in spring from southern waters was labile and protein-rich (C : N — 8–16, C : P — 200–450, N : P — 13–36), compared to the more refractory, diatom-dominated material sinking out north of the STF in spring (C : N 9–22, C : P 50–230, N : P 5–19). These observations are consistent with anomalously high benthic biomass and diversity observed on south Chatham Rise. Resuspension and differential particle settling are probable causes for depth increases in particulate flux. Estimated particle source areas may be up to 120 km away due to high levels of mesoscale activity and mean flow in the STF region.  相似文献

The total organic carbon (TOC) and total inorganic carbon (CT) exchange between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea was studied in the Strait of Gibraltar in September 1997. Samples were taken at eight stations from western and eastern entrances of the Strait and at the middle of the Strait (Tarifa Narrows). TOC was analyzed by a high-temperature catalytic oxidation method, and CT was calculated from alkalinity–pHT pairs and appropriate thermodynamic relationships. The results are used in a two-layer model of water mass exchange through the Strait, which includes the Atlantic inflow, the Mediterranean outflow and the interface layer in between. Our observations show a decrease of TOC and an increase of CT concentrations from the surface to the bottom: 71–132 μM C and 2068–2150 μmol kg−1 in the Surface Atlantic Water, 74–95 μM C and 2119–2148 μmol kg−1 in the North Atlantic Central Water, 63–116 μM C and 2123–2312 μmol kg−1 in the interface layer, and 61–78 μM C and 2307–2325 μmol kg−1 in the Mediterranean waters. However, within the Mediterranean outflow, we found that the concentrations of carbon were higher at the western side of the Strait (75–78 μM C, 2068–2318 μmol kg−1) than at the eastern side (61–69 μM C, 2082–2324 μmol kg−1). This difference is due to the mixing between the Atlantic inflow and the Mediterranean outflow on the west of the Strait, which results in a flux of organic carbon from the inflow to the outflow and an opposite flux of inorganic carbon. We estimate that the TOC input from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea through the Strait of Gibraltar varies from (0.97±0.8)104 to (1.81±0.90)104 mol C s−1 (0.3×1012 to 0.56×1012 mol C yr−1), while outflow of inorganic carbon ranges from (12.5±0.4)104 to (15.6±0.4)104 mol C s−1 (3.99–4.90×1012 mol C yr−1). The high variability of carbon exchange within the Strait is due to the variability of vertical mixing between inflow and outflow along the Strait. The prevalence of organic carbon inflow and inorganic carbon outflow shows the Mediterranean Sea to be a basin of active remineralization of organic material.  相似文献

Phytoplankton and bacterial abundance, size-fractionated phytoplankton chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and production together with bacterial production, microbial oxygen production and respiration rates were measured along a transect that crossed the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean (10°N–10°S) in September 2000, as part of the Atlantic Meridional Transect 11 (AMT 11) cruise. From 2°N to 5°S, the equatorial divergence resulted in a shallowing of the pycnocline and the presence of relatively high nitrate (>1 μM) concentrations in surface waters. In contrast, a typical tropical structure (TTS) was found near the ends of the transect. Photic zone integrated 14C primary production ranged from ∼200 mg C m−2 d−1 in the TTS region to ∼1300 mg C m−2 d−1 in the equatorial divergence area. In spite of the relatively high primary production rates measured in the equatorial upwelling region, only a moderate rise in phytoplankton biomass was observed as compared to nearby nutrient-depleted areas (22 vs. 18 mg Chl-a m−2, respectively). Picophytoplankton were the main contributors (>60%) to both Chl-a biomass and primary production throughout the region. The equatorial upwelling did not alter the phytoplankton size structure typically found in the tropical open ocean, which suggests a strong top-down control of primary producers by zooplankton. However, the impact of nutrient supply on net microbial community metabolism, integrated over the euphotic layer, was evidenced by an average net microbial community production within the equatorial divergence (1130 mg C m−2 d−1) three-fold larger than net production measured in the TTS region (370 mg C m−2 d−1). The entire region under study showed net autotrophic community metabolism, since respiration accounted on average for 51% of gross primary production integrated over the euphotic layer.  相似文献
