Images of the instantaneous nightside auroral distribution reveal that at times the orientation of auroral oval arcs changes to become characteristic of polar cap arcs. These connecting arcs all terminate in the diffuse aurora in the midnight sector, and their separation from the equatorward boundary of the diffuse aurora generally increases away from the midnight termination. The occurrence of these features requires a northward interplanetary magnetic field (positive Bz) as well as low magnetic activity. The existence of connecting arcs and the observation that they are at times the poleward boundary of weak diffuse emission indicate that the poleward boundary of auroral emissions can be significantly modified during non-substorm periods. Such a distortion implies that there can be a modification of the standard convection pattern in the magnetosphere during periods of positive Bz to produce expanded regions of sunward convection in the high latitude ionosphere.  相似文献

Auroral boundary variations and the interplanetary magnetic field   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper describes a DMSP data set of 150 auroral images during magnetically quiet times which have been analyzed in corrected geomagnetic local time and latitudinal coordinates and fit to offset circles. The fit parameters R (circle radius) and (X, Y) (center location) have been compared to the hourly interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) prior to the time of the satellite scan of the aurora. The results for variation of R with Bz, agree with previous works and generally show about a 1° increase of R with increase of southward Bz by 1 nT. The location of the circle center also has a clear statistical shift in the Southern Hemisphere with IMF By such that the southern polar cap moves towards dusk (dawn) with By > (By < 0).  相似文献

Ten years data set is used to separate the influence of IMF Bz-component and solar wind speed on the dawn-dusk component of magnetic variations in the summer polar cap. The reference level was chosen from most quiet periods of winter solstices (small polar cap and auroral zone conductivity) to exclude the inner source component. The linear regression analysis was then used to calculate the PC variation response to Bz under different ranges of solar wind speed. As a result, taking into account the value of polar cap conductivity and effects of induced currents, the response of dawn-dusk electric field component to Bz and V was obtained and the potential difference across the polar cap was estimated to be Δ?(kV) ≈ 6(V300)2 ? 9Bz(γ) for Bz ? + 1γ. The results give a proof for simultaneous operation in the magnetosphere of two electric field generation mechanisms, related to the boundary layer processes and magnetic field reconnection. The above-mentioned functional form was shown to correlate effectively with AE index (R = 0.73).  相似文献

The geometry of the open field line region in the polar region is computed for a variety of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation. The open field line region can be identified as the area bounded by the auroral oval, namely the polar cap. The polar cap geometry varies considerably with the orientation of the IMF and magnitude, particularly when the IMF Bz component is positive and large. The corresponding exit points of the open field lines on the magnetopause are also examined. The results will be a useful guide in interpreting various upper atmospheric phenomena in the highest latitude region of the Earth and also in observing chemical releases outside the magnetopause.  相似文献

We describe a simple method for determining the time at which the meridian of a sub-auroral magnetic observatory crosses that of the Harang discontinuity—the separation of the eastward and westward electrojets which flow in the evening and morning sectors of the auroral oval. We then consider how this time, determined from examination of magnetograms from sub-auroral observatories varies with the dawn-dusk (y) component of the Interplanetary Magnetic Field. We find that the time at which the Harang discontinuity is identified in the Northern Hemisphere is earlier for By > 0 than the occasions when By < 0, and that the converse is observed in the Southern Hemisphere. Also we suggest that there is no significant seasonal variation in the relationship between the time of the discontinuity and By. The sense of the azimuthal shift of the auroral electrojet currents with changes in By is consistent with the theory of Cowley (1981). However, the magnitude of the observed shifts is approximately an order of magnitude greater than the theoretical predictions. We suggest that this difference between observation and theory arises from the use of a dipole magnetic field model at auroral zone latitudes in the theoretical estimation of azimuthal displacement.  相似文献

We present the results of our new spectropolarimetric observations of FKCom aimed to measure the longitudinal component B z of its magnetic field. The most interesting interpretation of our results suggests that the B z value has significantly decreased compared to the 2008 observations of this star. Such a decrease of the longitudinal component of the magnetic field can be similar to the secular variations of B z registered earlier for another chromospherically active star II Peg. On the other hand, assuming the existence of B z variations with the rotation phase, we suggest that the variations of the phase curve B z from 2008 to 2012 originated because of the strengthening of the negative polarity spot, its domination, and as a result-a generally more symmetric distribution of magnetic regions.  相似文献

By the test particle method, we have investigated the kinematic characteristics of the electrons in the reconnecting current sheet with a guiding magnetic field Bz after they are accelerated by the supper-Dreicer electric field Ez. Firstly, the influence of the guiding magnetic field Bz on the particle acceleration is discussed under the assumption that Bz is constant in magnitude but different in orientation with respect to the electric field. In this case, the variation of the Bz direction directly leads to the variation of electron trajectories and makes electrons leave the current sheet along different paths. If Bz is parallel to Ez, the pitch angles of the accelerated electrons are close to 180°. If Bz is anti-parallel to Ez, the pitch angles of the accelerated electrons are close to 0°. The orientation of the guiding magnetic field just makes the electric field accelerate selectively the electrons in different regions, but does not change the energy distribution of electrons, and the finally derived energy spectrum is the common power-law spectrum E. In typical coronal conditions, γ is about 2.9. The further study indicates that the magnitude of γ depends on the strengths of the guiding magnetic field and reconnecting electric field, as well as the scale of the current sheet. Then, the kinematic characteristics of the accelerated electrons in the current sheet with multiple X-points and O-points are also studied. The result indicates that the existences of the X-points and O-points have the particles constrained in the accelerating region to obtain the maximum acceleration, and the final energy spectrum has the characteristics of multi-power law spectra.  相似文献

An extensive study of DMSP photographs and the simultaneous interplanetary magnetic field data suggests that the quantity defined by
S=∫τ0D ? ФN)dt
has a fundamental importance in substorm processes, where ΦD and ΦN denote the production rate of merged (or open) field lines along the dayside X-line and of reconnected (or closed) field lines along the nightside X-line, respectively; t = 0 is measured from the time when the Bz component begins to decrease after a prolonged period of a large positive Bz value. It is shown, first of all, that substorms occur so long as S > 0, regardless of the sign of the Bz component and its changes (namely, the southward and northward turnings) and of its time derivative as well. Secondly, the intensity of substorms is proportional to S2. By introducing the quantity S, the recent confusion of the problem of the roles of the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field on substorm processes can be removed.Since S is equal to the amount of the open magnetic fluxes at a time reckoned from t = 0, it is proportional to (A1 ? A0), where A0 denotes the minimum polar cap area (namely, the area bounded by the minimum auroral oval) and A1 the polar cap area at an arbitrary time t. Therefore, substorms can occur whenever the auroral oval is larger than its minimum size. Further, an intense substorm tends to occur along a large oval. The quantity S can also be considered as an excess flux, and thus the substorm can be considered as a process by which the magnetosphere tends to remove sporadically the excess energy associated with S.  相似文献

The direction of motion of the auroral forms in several sectors of the auroral oval during substorms is studied. The creation phase is characterized by the equatorward displacement of the luminous region in evening (15–21 LT) and in day (09–15 LT) hours, while individual forms in the luminous region drift mainly poleward with a mean velocity of 230 m/sec in day hours and equatorward with the mean velocity of 230 m/sec in evening hours. The equatorial shift of the luminous region correlates well with the BZ-component of the interplanetary magnetic field. The onset of the displacement coincides with the southward BZ-rotation and is accompanied by auroral intensity increase for about 10–20 min.During the expansive and recovery phases the day auroras drift poleward with mean velocities of 330 and 300 m/sec, respectively. In the evening sector the individual auroral forms drift both poleward and equatorward during the expansive phase and drift mainly towards the pole during the recovery phase with a mean velocity of 200 m/sec. In the morning sector characteristics of the motion of the individual auroral forms are more complicated than in the other sectors. The well defined shifts of the luminous region are not discovered. The possible relation between the motions of individual auroral forms with the magnetosphere convection is discussed.  相似文献

The theory of dissipation of ionospheric electric currents is extended to include viscosity. In a steady state (i.e. usually above about 140 km altitude) the joule plus viscous heating may be calculated by μ∇2v. E × B/B2. At lower altitudes where viscosity may, in some circumstances, be relatively unimportant the joule dissipation is calculated by the usual formula j. (E + v × B). In a prevalent model of the auroral electrojets it is found that the joule heating can be much more intense outside auroral forms than within them. Heating due to auroral electrojets cause a semi-annual variation in the thermosphere. Movement caused by auroral electric fields make a contribution to the super-rotation of the midlatitude upper atmosphere. Random electric fields lead to an eddy ‘viscosity’ or ‘exchange coefficientrs in the upper thermosphere of magnitude ρER2/B3tR2|∇E|. where tR is the correlation time of the random component of electric fields ER and ρ is air density. Theoretical conditions for significant heating by field-aligned currents are derived.  相似文献

Photometric observations of dayside auroras are compared with simultaneous measurements of geomagnetic disturbances from meridian chains of stations on the dayside and on the nightside to document the dynamics of dayside auroras in relation to local and global disturbances. These observations are related to measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) from the satellites ISEE-1 and 3. It is shown that the dayside auroral zone shifts equatorward and poleward with the growth and decay of the circum-oval/polar cap geomagnetic disturbance and with negative and positive changes in the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field (Bz). The geomagnetic disturbance associated with the auroral shift is identified as the DP2 mode. In the post-noon sector the horizontal disturbance vector of the geomagnetic field changes from southward to northward with decreasing latitude, thereby changing sign near the center of the oval precipitation region. Discrete auroral forms are observed close to or equatorward of the ΔH = 0 line which separates positive and negative H-component deflections. This reversal moves in latitude with the aurora and it probably reflects a transition of the electric field direction at the polar cap boundary. Thus, the discrete auroral forms observed on the dayside are in the region of sunward-convecting field lines. A model is proposed to explain the equatorward and poleward movement of the dayside oval in terms of a dayside current system which is intensified by a southward movement of the IMF vector. According to this model, the Pedersen component of the ionospheric current is connected with the magnetopause boundary layer via field-aligned current (FAC) sheets. Enhanced current intensity, corresponding to southward auroral shift, is consistent with increased energy extraction from the solar wind. In this way the observed association of DP2 current system variations and auroral oval expansion/contraction is explained as an effect of a global, ‘direct’ response of the electromagnetic state of the magnetosphere due to the influence of the solar wind magnetic field. Estimates of electric field, current, and the rate of Joule heat dissipation in the polar cap ionosphere are obtained from the model.  相似文献

The horizontal electric field has been measured with balloons over the Pacific Ocean near the Sanriku Coast in Japan. By comparing the electric-field data obtained during magnetically disturbed periods, 16–17 October 1973, 6–7 October 1975 and 3–4 October 1977, with IMF Bz, auroral zone AU and AL, equatorial Dst and Δ(Dst)Δt, mid-latitude magnetic fields (H, D, Z at Kakioka), and the ionospheric electron density (?0F2 at Kokubunji), it is found that the observed electric fields of about 9 mVm?1 made the clockwise rotation during the growth and recovery stages of the magnetospheric substorms. Relations between high and middle latitude ionospheres and between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere are discussed in relation to the origin and propagation of these electric fields.  相似文献

The magnetic cloud boundary layer (BL) is a disturbance structure that is located between the magnetic cloud and the ambient solar wind. In this study, we statistically analyze the characteristics of the magnetic field B z component (in GSM coordinates) inside the magnetic cloud boundary layers as well as the relationship between the magnetic cloud boundary layers and the magnetospheric substorms based on 35 typical BLs observed by Wind from 1995 to 2006. It is found that the magnetic field B z components are more turbulent inside the BLs than those inside the adjacent sheath regions and the magnetic clouds. The substorm onsets are identified by the auroral breakups that are the most reliable substorm indicators by using the Polar UVI image data. The UVI data are available only for 17 BLs. The statistical analysis indicated that 9 of the 17 events triggered the substorms when BLs crossed the magnetosphere and that the southward field in the adjacent sheath region is a necessary condition for these triggering events. In addition, the SF-type BLs, which are named by their features of the B z components inside the BLs and adjacent sheath regions, can easily trigger the substorms during their passage of the magnetosphere. SF-type BLs are characterized by sustained strong southward magnetic fields persisting for at least 30 minutes in the adjacent sheath regions and at least one change in the polarity of the B z component inside the BL. In this study, 7 out of 8 such SF-type BL events triggered the substorm expansion phase, suggesting that the SF-type BLs are another important interplanetary disturbance source of substorms.  相似文献

The magnetic fields produced by a three-dimensional current system, consisting of a flow into the morning part of the auroral oval along tail-like field lines, along the auroral oval and out from the evening part of the oval along tail-like field lines, are computed. It is demonstrated that the major parts of the well-known ‘positive bay’ in low latitudes on the Earth's surface, the positive H variation at the synchronous distance and the positive Bs variation along the magnetotail during magnetospheric substorms can be caused by the proposed current system.  相似文献

Under the assumption that the photospheric quiet Sun magnetic field is turbulent, the cancellation function has previously been used to estimate the true, resolution-independent mean, unsigned vertical flux 〈|B z |〉true. We show that the presence of network elements, noise, and seeing complicate the measurement of accurate cancellation functions and their power law exponents κ. Failure to exclude network elements previously led to estimates that were too low for both the cancellation exponent κ and 〈|B z |〉true. However, both κ and 〈|B z |〉true are overestimated due to noise in magnetograms. While no conclusive value can be derived with data from current instruments, our Hinode/SP results of κ?0.38 and 〈|B z |〉true?270 gauss can be taken as upper bounds.  相似文献

The geometry of the open flux area in the polar region is computed by superposing a uniform interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) with various orientation angles to a model of the magnetosphere. It is confirmed that the IMF By component is as important as the Bz component in “opening” the magnetosphere. It is also shown that the computed area of open field lines is remarkably similar to the observed ones which were determined by using the entry of solar electrons. In particular, when the IMF vector is confined in the X-Z-plane and the Bz component has a large positive value, the open area becomes crescent-shaped, coinciding approximately with the cusp region.  相似文献

The results of longitudinal magnetic field measurements B z in the hot accretion spot in three classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) are reported. In all three stars the magnetic field is detected at a level above 2σ in the formation region of the narrow component of the He I 5876 Å emission line. In the case of DS Tau the longitudinal field B z in the hot spot was also measured from the narrow emission components of the Na I D lines, implying +0.8 ± 0.3 kG, which is equal to the B z field component measured from the He I 5876 Å line. Our results suggest that the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory can be used to study magnetic fields in the hot spots of CTTS with magnitudes down to 13m, making it possible to double the number of stars of this type with measured B z values in the accretion zone.  相似文献

One year of magnetic field data from the geostationary spacecraft ATS 6 have been analysed for effects associated with the equatorial plane components of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). It is shown that perturbation fields in the Y (dawn to dusk) direction appear in association with the Y component of the IMF, in agreement with previous theoretical suggestions. On average a fraction 0.28 ± 0.02 of the IMF Y field appears at geostationary orbit, such that the average ATS 6 By field is 1.9 ± 0.4 nT larger when IMF By is positive than when it is negative. The perturbation field magnitudes are also found to depend strongly on local time, however, with largest effects appearing in the midnight and dawn quadrants, where the average perturbation fields are nearly half the simultaneous IMF Bv. field. At noon this fraction drops to one fifth, and no average effect occurs in the dusk quadrant. Both the daily mean perturbation fields and the diurnal modulation are also found to depend upon the level of magnetic disturbance as measured by KP, or equivalently upon IMF Bz, and upon season of the year. Overall stronger daily mean perturbation fields occur when KP is low or when IMF Bz is positive, than when KP is high or when IMF Bz is negative. This effect is not linear, however, and there is also a trend in the data towards increasing perturbation fields with IMF Bz negative and decreasing. On dividing the data according to season, increasingly strong daily mean effects are found in the order winter, summer and equinox for both quiet and disturbed magnetospheres. Diurnal modulations of the perturbation field magnitudes for low KP (IMF Bz > 0) take the form of large amplitude quasi-sinusoidal variations about mean values which are very marked in the equinox data, are present to a lesser degree during summer and are absent during winter conditions. When Kp is high (IMF Bz < 0) significant deviations from mean perturbation field values occur generally only during nightside hours and little seasonal dependence is evident. Finally, it is shown that the highest correlation between the IMF data and the ATS 6 perturbation fields occurs with zero time delay between the two data sets, showing that a prompt response to IMF conditions occurs at geostationary orbit within the 1 h time resolution available in this study. Although many details of the above ATS 6 response remain to be understood, these results overall demonstrate in a very direct manner the magnetically “open” nature of the Earth's magnetosphere.  相似文献
