Satellite observations of the heliospheric current sheet indicate that the internal structure of sector boundaries is a very complex structure with many directional discontinuities in the magnetic field. This implies that the heliospheric current sheet is not a single surface but a constantly changing layer with a varying number of current sheets. In this paper, we investigate magnetic reconnection caused by the resistive tearing mode instability in non-periodic multiple current sheets by using two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulation. The results show that it is complex unsteady magnetic reconnection. Accompanying the nonlinear development of the tearing mode, the width of each magnetic island in multiple current sheets increases with time, and this leads to new magnetic reconnection. At the same time, the width of each current sheet increases, and the current intensity decreases gradually. Finally, the reverse current disappears, and a big magnetic island is formed in the central region. This process is faster when the separation between the current sheets is smaller. We suggest that the occurrence of multiple directional discontinuities observed at sector boundary crossings in the heliosphere may be associated with the magnetic islands and plasmoids caused by magnetic reconnection in multiple current sheets.  相似文献

We investigate the nonlinear evolution of resistive tearing mode in a current sheet with a sheared flow in a long, thin cylinder. The results show that a hyperbolic secant (sech) flow field will lead to instability of the resistive tearing mode, formation of magnetic islands and rapid release of magnetic energy. The coupling between sheared flow and the tearing mode and interaction between suprathermal instabilities change the degree of shear in the magnetic field (the electric current gradient) and drive the development of the instability. This process may be one of the mechanisms of solar flares.  相似文献

This work is devoted to study the magnetic reconnection instability under solar spicule conditions. Numerical study of the resistive tearing instability in a current sheet is presented by considering the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) framework. To investigate the effect of this instability in a stratified atmosphere of solar spicules, we solve linear and non-ideal MHD equations in the x?z plane. In the linear analysis it is assumed that resistivity is only important within the current sheet, and the exponential growth of energies takes place faster as plasma resistivity increases. We are interested to see the occurrence of magnetic reconnection during the lifetime of a typical solar spicule.  相似文献

It has been proposed that magnetospheric substorms and solar flares are a result of the same mechanism. In our view this mechanism is connected with the escape, or attempted escape, of energized plasma from a region of closed magnetic field lines bounded by a magnetic bottle. In the case of the Earth, it must be plasma that is able to maintain a discrete auroral arc, and we propose that the cross-tail current connected to the arc is filamentary in nature to provide the field-aligned current sheet above the arc. A localized meander of such an intense current filament could be caused by a tearing instability in the neutral sheet. Such a meander will cause an inductive electric field opposing the current change everywhere. In trying to reduce the component of the induction electric field parallel to the magnetic field lines, the plasma must enhance the transverse or cross-tail component; this action leads to eruptive behavior, in agreement with tearing theories. This enhanced induction electric field will cause a discharge along the magnetic neutral line at the apex of the magnetic arches, constituting an impulsive acceleration of all charged particles originally near the neutral line. The products of this phase then undergo betatron acceleration for a second phase. This discharge eventually reduces the electric field along the neutral line, and thereafter the enclosed magnetic flux through the neutral line remains nearly constant. The result is a plasmoid that has definite identity; its buoyancy leads to its escape. The auroral breakup (and solar flare) is the complex plasma response to the changing electromagnetic field.  相似文献

Electron and proton acceleration in reconnecting current sheets in electron-rich solar flares is considered. A significant three-dimensional magnetic field is assumed in the current sheet where the particles are accelerated by the DC electric field. The tearing instability of a pre-flare current sheet leads to the formation of multiple singular lines of magnetic field where the electric and magnetic fields are coaligned. Magnetized electrons are shown to be accelerated to a few tens of MeV before they leave the vicinity of a singular line. The acceleration time is estimated to be less than 10–3 s. By contrast, much heavier protons are unmagnetized and their energy gain is more modest. The model explains a high electron-to-proton ratio and the unusually intense gamma-ray continuum above 1 MeV observed in the electron-rich flares.  相似文献

Simple models for the MHD eruption of a solar prominence are presented, in which the prominence is treated as a twisted magnetic flux tube that is being repelled from the solar surface by magnetic pressure forces. The effects of different physical assumptions to deal with this magneto-hydrodynamically complex phenomenon are evaluated, such as holding constant the prominence current, radius, flux or twist or modelling the prominence as a current sheet. Including a background magnetic field allows the prominence to be in equilibrium initially with an Inverse Polarity and then to erupt due to magnetic non-equilibrium when the background magnetic field is too small or the prominence twist is too great. The electric field at the neutral point below the prominence rapidly increases to a maximum value and then declines. Including the effect of gravity also allows an equilibrium with Normal Polarity to exist. Finally, an ideal MHD solution is found which incorporates self-consistently a current sheet below the prominence and which implies that a prominence will still erupt and form a current sheet even if no reconnection occurs. When reconnection is allowed it is, therefore, driven by the eruption.  相似文献

This paper treats the prominence model of Low (1993) to examine more complicated sheet currents than those used in the original model. Nonlinear force-free field solutions, in Cartesian coordinates, invariant in a given direction, are presented to show the possibility of an inverse-polarity prominence embedded in a large twisted flux tube. The force-free solution is matched to an external, unsheared, potential coronal magnetic field. These new solutions are mathematically interesting and allow an investigation of different profiles of the current intensity, magnetic field vector and mass density in the sheet. These prominence models show a general increase in magnetic field strength with height in agreement with observations. Other prominence properties are shown to match the observed values.  相似文献

A laboratory simulation method is proposed for energy release processes occurring in a fragment of the flare current sheet on the Sun. The method relies on the assumption that the spatial scale of such processes is represented by the current sheet's thickness whose values can be close for both the solar and laboratory conditions. It is shown that in an extended current sheet, current dissipation on anomalous resistivity that ensures the specific power of energy release close to that observed in a flare, is the main energy release mechanism. A rapid compression of the sheet by external magnetic fields can provide the condition for switching on a powerful energy release. The tearing instability developing in a homogeneous neutral sheet, leads to the formation of magnetic islands in which the energy release is localized.  相似文献

Dispersion relations for the resistive tearing instability are analytically found in the hydromagnetic approximation for a current sheet with a small normal component of the magnetic field. A strong stabilizing influence of the normal component on the development of the tearing instability is shown to exist. These results are also obtained from physical considerations, and so a simple interpretation of the stabilization effect of the normal component is given. The results of the present paper are compared with those of previous works on the topic, and the previous negative results are explained.  相似文献

The ten-degree tilt of the Jovian magnetic dipole causes the magnetic equator to move back and forth across Jupiters rotational equator and the Galileo orbit that lies therein. Beyond about 24 Jovian radii, the equatorial current sheet thins and the magnetic structure changes from quasi-dipolar into magnetodisk-like with two regions of nearly radial but antiparallel magnetic field separated by a strong current layer. The magnetic field at the center of the current sheet is very weak in this region. Herein we examine the current sheet at radial distances from 24–55 Jovian radii. We find that the magnetic structure very much resembles the structure seen at planetary magnetopause and tail current sheet crossings. The magnetic field variation is mainly linear with little rotation of the field direction. At times there is almost no small-scale structure present and the normal component of the magnetic field is almost constant through the current sheet. At other times there are strong small-scale structures present in both the southward and northward directions. This small-scale structure appears to grow with radial distance and may provide the seeds for the explosive reconnection observed at even greater radial distances on the nightside. Beyond about 40 Jovian radii, the thin current sheet also appears to be almost constantly in oscillatory motion with periods of about 10 min. The amplitude of these oscillations also appears to grow with radial distance. The source of these fluctuations may be dynamical events in the more distant magnetodisk.  相似文献

The present model is proposed to study the effect of thickness of Harris sheet and strength of guide field on the evolution of magnetic islands and generation of turbulence in magnetic reconnection sites. The governing model equation has been derived using EMHD model in the presence of the equilibrium magnetic field, consisting of guide field and shear field in the Harris sheet. We have carried out a numerical simulation of the dynamical equation for magnetopause region parameters. Simulation results reveal that as the thickness of Harris sheet increases, the intensity of evolution of magnetic islands decreases, but with increasing strength of guide field, intensity gradually increases and at later times irregular structures are formed. These structures give the indication of turbulence in magnetic reconnection site. Further, we have calculated power spectrum, which follows power index \({\sim}\,{-}1.5\) in the inertial range.  相似文献

Magnetic dips in the solar wind   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Using magnetic data from the HELIOS-1 fluxgate magnetometer, with a 0.2 s resolution, we have investigated the structure of several interplanetary discontinuities involving magnetic dips and rotations of the magnetic field vector. A minimum variance analysis illustrates the behaviour of the magnetic field through the transition. Using this analysis, quite different structures have been isolated and, in particular, narrow transitions resembling almost one dimensional reconnected neutral sheets. For the thinner cases (scale lengths of the magnetic rotation of the order or smaller than 103 km), we find that the observed structures can be the nonlinear effect of a resistive tearing mode instability having developed on an originally one dimensional neutral sheet at the solar corona.  相似文献

Two-dimensional stationary magnetic reconnection models that include a thin Syrovatskii-type current sheet and four discontinuous magnetohydrodynamic flows of finite length attached to its endpoints are considered. The flow pattern is not specified but is determined from a self-consistent solution of the problem in the approximation of a strong magnetic field. Generalized analytical solutions that take into account the possibility of a current sheet discontinuity in the region of anomalous plasma resistivity have been found. The global structure of the magnetic field in the reconnection region and its local properties near the current sheet and attached discontinuities are studied. In the reconnection regime in which reverse currents are present in the current sheet, the attached discontinuities are trans-Alfvénic shock waves near the current sheet endpoints. Two types of transitions from nonevolutionary shocks to evolutionary ones along discontinuous flows are shown to be possible, depending on the geometrical model parameters. The relationship between the results obtained and numerical magnetic reconnection experiments is discussed.  相似文献

A model of forced magnetic reconnection in a force-free magnetic field is considered, which allows calculation of the magnetic energy release during the current sheet reconnection. The dependence of this energy on characteristics of the magnetic configuration has been studied, and it was found that the released energy becomes very large when the field is near the marginal tearing stability. A persistent plasma heating provided by ongoing external driving and internal reconnection is also derived. It shows a typical relaxation-type dependence on the driving frequency, with dissipation becoming most efficient when the time-scales of the driving and reconnection are comparable. Possible implications of the obtained results for the problem of solar coronal heating are discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

In this paper the twisted flux-tube model for the support of a prominence sheet with constant axial current density, given by Ridgway, Priest, and Amari (1991), is considered. The model is extended in Section 2 to incorporate a current sheet of finite height. The sheet is supported in a constant current density force-free field in the configuration of a twisted flux tube. The mass of the prominence sheet, using a typical height and field strength, is computed. Outside the flux tube the background magnetic field is assumed to be potential but the matching of the flux tube onto this background field is not considered here.Instead our attention is focussed, in Section 3, on the interior of the prominence. An expanded scale is used to stretch the prominence sheet to a finite width. We analytically select solutions for the internal magnetic field in this region which match smoothly onto the external force-free solutions at the prominence edge. The force balance equation applied inside the prominence then yields expressions for the pressure and density and a corresponding temperature may be computed.  相似文献

The energy of a solar flare can be accumulated as the magnetic energy of the current sheet created in the vicinity of a magnetic field singular line by the focusing of disturbances. Conditions which define the singular line in general were obtained using the properties of a singular line as it focuses disturbances. Numerical simulations and an analytical model show the possibility of the creation of a stable current sheet which becomes unstable after a quasistationary evolution. The nonlinear development of the instability leads to a fast reconstruction of the magnetic field with the release of a substantial part of the magnetic energy. The longitudinal magnetic field in our experiment increases the sheet thickness by at most a factoring of ten.  相似文献

The apparent stability of coronal neutral sheets with respect to the resistive tearing mode has been attributed by previous authors to the influence of a weak normal component of the confining magnetic field. To check this hypothesis a normal mode analysis is performed applying rigorously singular perturbation technique. Allowance is made for a value of the normal component which is large measured in the appropriate units deduced from the dynamics of the one-dimensional tearing mode. The structure of the eigenmodes is completely changed: the singular layer decays into a broad band of filaments with antiparallel flow directions and spatial oscillations in the perturbed current density appear. Surprisingly, the growth rate is not changed. If parameters for a typical neutral sheet in the middle corona (0.5 solar radii) are inserted, the result is that no stabilization by a normal component occurs, if the value of the growth time predicted by the one-dimensional theory is far shorter than ten minutes - independent of the values assumed for the width of the neutral sheet or the resistivity.  相似文献

We present two-dimensional numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection in a configuration relevant to two-ribbon solar flares. The calculations extend those of Forbes and Priest (1982a, b, 1983) and some puzzling aspects of their results are clarified. In particular, the roles of magnetic diffusion, of the tearing mode and of turbulence are individually examined. We stress the important part played by boundary conditions in determining the evolution of the initial current sheet and suggest that in future the evolution of the entire overlying magnetic arcade be modelled as well as the current sheet that is created below the rising arcade. Tearing at very high magnetic Reynolds numbers is likely to develop into an impulsive bursty regime of reconnection after a time which depends on the initial level of turbulence.  相似文献

In this article, we investigate the possibility of transient growth in the linear perturbation of current sheets. The resistive magnetohydrodynamics operator for a background field consisting of a current sheet is non-normal, meaning that associated eigenvalues and eigenmodes can be very sensitive to perturbation. In a linear stability analysis of a tearing current sheet, we show that modes that are damped as \(t\rightarrow \infty \) can produce transient energy growth, contributing faster growth rates and higher energy attainment (within a fixed finite time) than the unstable tearing mode found from normal-mode analysis. We determine the transient growth for tearing-stable and tearing-unstable regimes and discuss the consequences of our results for processes in the solar atmosphere, such as flares and coronal heating. Our results have significant potential impact on how fast current sheets can be disrupted. In particular, transient energy growth due to (asymptotically) damped modes may lead to accelerated current sheet thinning and, hence, a faster onset of the plasmoid instability, compared to the rate determined by the tearing mode alone.  相似文献
