Possible precursor signatures in the quasi-periodic variations of solar photospheric fields were investigated in the build-up to one of the deepest solar minima experienced in the past 100 years. This unusual and deep solar minimum occurred between Solar Cycles 23 and 24. We used both wavelet and Fourier analysis to study the changes in the quasi-periodic variations of solar photospheric fields. Photospheric fields were derived using ground-based synoptic magnetograms spanning the period 1975.14 to 2009.86 and covering Solar Cycles 21, 22, and 23. A hemispheric asymmetry in the periodicities of the photospheric fields was seen only at latitudes above ±?45° when the data were divided into two parts based on a wavelet analysis: one prior to 1996 and the other after 1996. Furthermore, the hemispheric asymmetry was observed to be confined to the latitude range of 45° to 60°. This can be attributed to the variations in polar surges that primarily depend on both the emergence of surface magnetic flux and varying solar-surface flows. The observed asymmetry along with the fact that both solar fields above ±?45° and micro-turbulence levels in the inner-heliosphere have been decreasing since the early- to mid-nineties (Janardhan et al. in Geophys. Res. Lett. 382, 20108, 2011) suggest that around this time active changes occurred in the solar dynamo that governs the underlying basic processes in the Sun. These changes in turn probably initiated the build-up to the very deep solar minimum at the end of Cycle 23. The decline in fields above ±?45°, for well over a solar cycle, would imply that weak polar fields have been generated in the past two successive solar cycles, viz. Cycles 22 and 23. A continuation of this declining trend beyond 22 years, if it occurs, will have serious implications for our current understanding of the solar dynamo.  相似文献

We show that if Io-injected plasma is lost via a planetary wind a sun-fixed Birkeland current system may result. This is due to the fact that a current flows across a density gradient produced by the loss of plasma through the planetary wind in the tail. The divergent current is connected to field-aligned Birkeland currents which flow into the ionosphere at dawn and out of it at dusk. The closure currents in the ionosphere require a dawn-to-dusk electric field which at the orbit of Io is estimated to have a strength of a few mV m?1. Independent estimates derived from the local time asymmetry of the torus u.v. emission indicate a field of 1.5mVm?1.  相似文献

All of the OGO-5 light ion density measurements (covering the period from March 1968 to May 1969) obtained from the Lockheed Light Ion Mass Spectrometer were used to determine the average global topology of the equatorial plasmasphere density distribution. The variation of the light ion equatorial density at L?3.2 with local time was deduced by determining the average density observed within one hour of a specific local time and within 0.1 of a given L coordinate. The average H+ density showed a semidiurnal variation with peaks near noon and midnight. The He+ observations also revealed multiple peaks throughout the day but with smaller amplitudes than those of H+. At L>3.2 plasma trough conditions increase the scatter of densities. The average variation of the H+ density with L within the plasmasphere is found to be steepest near midnight and can be least squares fitted equally well to either an exponential variation exp (?bL) where b is between 0.85 and 1.5 or to a power law L?a where a varies from 3.2 to 5.  相似文献

Plasma and magnetic field data from PROGNOZ-7 have revealed that solar wind (magnetosheath) plasma elements may penetrate the dayside magnetopause surface and form high density regions with enhanced cross-field flow in the boundary layer. The injected magnetosheath plasma is observed to have an excess drift velocity as compared to the local boundary layer plasma, comprising both “cold” plasma of terrestrial origin and a hot ring current component. A differential drift between two plasma components can be understood in terms of a momentum transfer process driven by an injected magnetosheath plasma population. The braking action of the injected plasma may be described as a dynamo process where particle kinetic energy is transferred into electromagnetic energy (electric field). The generated electric field will force the local plasma to ε×B-drift, and the dynamo region therefore also constitutes an accelerator region for the local plasma. Whenever energy is dissipated from the energy transfer process (a net current is flowing through a load), there will also be a difference between the induced electric field and the v×B term of the generator plasma. Thus, the local plasma will drift more slowly than the injected generator plasma. We will present observations showing that a relation between the momentum transferred, the injected plasma and the momentum taken up by the local plasma exists. For instance, if the local plasma density is sufficiently high, the differential drift velocity of the injected and local plasma will be small. A large fraction of the excess momentum is then transferred to the local plasma. Conversely, a low local plasma density results in a high velocity difference and a low fraction of local momentum transfer. In our study cases the “cold” plasma component was frequently found to dominate the local magnetospheric plasma density in the boundary layer. Accordingly, this component may have the largest influence on the local momentum transfer process. We will demonstrate that this also seems to be the case. Moreover we show that the accelerated “cold” plasma component may be used as a tracer element reflecting both the momentum and energy transfer and the penetration process in the dayside boundary layer. The high He+ percentage of the accelerated “cold” plasma indicates a plasmaspheric origin. Considering the quite high densities of energetic He+ found in the boundary layer, the overall low abundance of He+ (as compared to e.g. O+) found in the plasma sheet and outer ring current evidently reduces the importance of the dayside boundary layer as a plasma source in the large scale magnetospheric circulation system.  相似文献

The 1943–2001 data on the brightness of the coronal green λ530.3 nm line are used to investigate the surface distribution of the north-south (N-S) asymmetry index A. Synoptic maps of the asymmetry index in 784 successive Carrington rotations have been constructed. The results are presented in the form of a movie that visualizes the time variation in the spatial distribution of the asymmetry. Examination of a series of synoptic maps shows that the time variation in the general distribution of the A index over the solar surface has a number of peculiar features. In particular, the latitude-longitude regions with the dominance of the green line brightness in one of the hemispheres are replaced by similar (in shape) regions with its dominance in the other hemisphere after 14–18 rotations-in other words, the map, as it were, turns into its negative. This may be a manifestation of the quasi-biennial oscillations in the N-S asymmetry. The synodic rotation period of the asymmetry “structures” has been determined. It has turned out to be equal to the period of the fast coronal rotation mode found previously from the large-scale brightness distribution of the coronal green line, i.e., this is 27 days on the equator and slightly more than 28 days at high latitudes. The N-S asymmetry and its characteristics should be taken into account when considering the dynamo mechanism.  相似文献

For the future development of Chinese Giant Solar Telescope (CGST) in Western China, a new sky brightness monitor (SBM) has been produced for the site survey for CGST. To critically examine the performance and sensitivity of SBM, we used it in the observation of the annular solar eclipse in Dali City, Yunnan, on 15 January 2010. The observation met good weather conditions with an almost clear sky during the eclipse. The SBM measurement translates into the solar illuminance changes at a level of 2.4×10?4 I?s?1 during the eclipse. The time of the minimal sky brightness in the field of view (FOV) is found consistent with the time of maximum eclipse. Two local sky regions in the FOV are chosen to make a time series of the calibrated skylight profiles. The evolution of the sky brightness thus calibrated also shows good consistency with the eclipse, particularly between the second and the third contacts. The minimal sky brightness in each local sky region took place within half a minute from the corresponding predicted contact time. Such small time delays were mainly caused by occasional cirri. The minimal sky brightness measured during the eclipse is a few millionths of I ?? with standard deviation of 0.11 millionths of I ??. The observation supports that the single-scattering process (optically thin conditions) is the main contributor to the atmospheric scattering. We have demonstrated that many important aerosol optical parameters can be deduced from our data. We conclude that the new SBM is a sensitive sky photometer that can be used for our CGST and coronagraph site surveys.  相似文献

High resolution electric field and particle data, obtained by the S23L1 rocket crossing over a discrete prebreakup arc in January 1979, are studied in coordination with ground observations (Scandinavian Magnetometer Array—SMA, TV and all-sky cameras) in order to clarify the electrodynamics of the arc and its surroundings. Height-integrated conductivities have been calculated from the particle data, including the ionization effects of precipitating protons and assuming a steady state balance between ion production and recombination losses. High resolution optical information of arc location relative to the rocket permitted a check of the validity of this assumption for each flux tube passed by the rocket. Another check was provided by a comparison between calculated (equilibrium values) and observed electron densities along the rocket trajectory. A way to compensate for the finite precipitation time when calculating the electron densities is outlined. The height-integrated HalI-Pedersen conductivity ratio is typically 1.4 within the arc and about 1 at the arc edges, indicative of a relatively softer energy spectrum there. The height-integrated conductivities combined with the DC electric field measurements permitted calculation of the horizontal ionospheric current vectors (J), Birkeland currents (from div J) and energy dissipation through Joule heating (ΣpE2). An eastward current of typically 1 A m?1 was found to be concentrated mainly to the arc region and equatorward of it. A comparison has been made with the equivalent current system deduced from ground based magnetometer data (SMA) showing a generally good agreement with the rocket results. An intense Pedersen current peak (1.2 A m?1) was found at the southern arc edge. This edge constituted a division line between a very intense (> 10 μA m?1) and localized (~ 6 km) downward current sheet to the south, probably carried by upward flowing cold ionospheric electrons and a more extended upward current sheet (> 10 μA m?2) over the arc carried by measured precipitating electrons. Joule and particle heating across the arc were anticorrelated, consistent with the findings of Evans et al. (1977) with a total value of about 100mW m?2.  相似文献

The pumping up of orbital inclinations of asteroids caused by sweeping secular resonances associated with depletion of a protoplanetary disk is discussed, focusing on the dependence on the disk inclinations and surface density distribution. The asteroids have large mean inclinations that cannot be explained by present planetary perturbations alone. It has been suggested that the sweeping secular resonances caused by disk depletion are responsible for these high inclinations. Nagasawa et al. (2000, Astron. J.119, 1480-1497) showed that the inclinations of asteroids are pumped up if the disk is depleted in an inside-out manner on a time scale longer than 3×105 years. Their assumed disk midplane is not on the invariant plane. However, it should be affected by the inclination of the disk plane. Here we investigate the dependence on the disk inclinations. We assume a disk depletion model in which the disk inside the jovian orbit has been removed and the residual outer disk is uniformly depleted. We calculate the locations of the secular resonances and the excitation magnitude of the inclinations with analytical methods. We found that the inclinations are pumped up to the observational level for a depletion time scale longer than 106 years in the case of the disk plane that coincides with the invariant plane. The required time scale is longest (3×106 years) if the disk plane coincides with the jovian orbital plane. However, it is still within the observationally inferred depletion time scale. We also studied dependence on a disk surface density gradient and found that the results do not change significantly as long as the inner disk depletion is faster than the outer disk one.  相似文献

We study the dynamic evolution of the time series describing the plage regions areas observed daily at the Observatório Astronómico da Universidade de Coimbra, in each one of the solar hemispheres during solar cycles 21?–?23. The classical ARMA model has proven to be insufficient to describe the time variations seen in the data because of the strong conditional variability. We found that the data are well fitted by ARMA mixed with power-δ TGARCH error models. The power index δ is non-integer; this property has recently been introduced in the literature on time-series analyses and indicates the presence of strong volatility and long memory in the data series. We also detected dynamic asymmetry in the plage region areas observed in the two hemispheres when two different temporal models were obtained to fit them. The finding of a dynamic asymmetry is also supported by the dynamic evolution of the daily difference (north–south) time series, which is significantly different from white noise. This statistical modeling of time series, taking into account new and different characteristics of the solar activity, will be very useful in subsequent forecast developments.  相似文献

Photometric and spectroscopic observations of the nearby type-IIP supernova 2004dj are presented. The 56Ni mass in the envelope of SN 2004dj was estimated from the light curve to be ≈0.02M. This estimate is confirmed by modeling the Hα luminosity. The Hα emission line exhibits a strong asymmetry characterized by the presence of a blue component in the line with a shift of ?1600 km s?1 at the early nebular phase. A similar asymmetry was found in the Hβ, [O I], and [Ca II] lines. The line asymmetry is interpreted as being the result of asymmetric 56Ni ejecta. The Hα profile and its evolution are reproduced in the model of an asymmetric bipolar 56Ni structure for a spherical hydrogen distribution. The mass of the front 56Ni jet is comparable to that of the central component and twice that of the rear 56Ni jet. We point out that the asymmetric bipolar structure of 56Ni ejecta is also present in SN 1999em, a normal type-IIP supernova.  相似文献

The shape and red-shift of the solar potassium resonance line (42 P 1/2→42 S 1/2) at 7699 Å have been studied by an atomic-beam resonant scattering technique. Light from the central 10% of the solar image fell on a potassium atomic beam whose scattering wavelength was shifted in a known way by a magnetic field. The line profile was obtained by measuring the scattered light intensity as a function of magnetic field. The time required for a single profile of the line core was 30–40 min. Most of the observed profiles were asymmetrical and the character of the asymmetry varied in an erratic way from profile to profile. The mean red-shift of the 40 profiles which showed small or no asymmetry was: (δλ)mean = 10 ± 1 mÅ = (0.61±0.06)(δλ)gravwhere (δλ grav) is the gravitational red-shift predicted on the basis of the principle of equivalence. This result, together with those of other recent experiments, is consistent with the previously observed correlation between the red-shift of a solar line and its strength. Various checks of the experimental method are discussed, including preliminary measurements on the solar sodium D1 line.  相似文献

An extensive set of HI Lyman-α images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) from 1997-2001 has been analyzed to provide information about the spatial and temporal character of Io's SO2 atmosphere. An atmospheric distribution map derived from the observations reveals that the sunlit SO2 atmosphere is temporally stable on a global scale, with only small local changes. An anti-/sub-jovian asymmetry in the SO2 distribution is present in all 5 years of the observations. The average daytime atmosphere is densest on the anti-jovian hemisphere in the equatorial regions, with a maximum equatorial column density of 5.0×1016 cm−2 at 140° longitude. The SO2 atmosphere also has greater latitudinal extent on the anti-jovian hemisphere as compared to the sub-jovian. The atmospheric distribution appears to be best correlated with the location of hot spots and known volcanic plumes, although small number statistics for the plumes limits the correlation.  相似文献

The magnetic field vector residuals observed from the Magsat satellite have been used to obtain the dependence of the polar cap boundary and the current system on IMF for quiet and mildly disturbed conditions (Kp ⩽ 3 +). The study has been carried out for the summer months in the Southern Hemisphere. “Shear reversals” (SRs) in vector residuals indicative of the infinite current sheet approximation of the field-aligned currents (FACs) indicate roughly the polar cap boundary or the poleward boundary of the plasma sheet. This is also the poleward edge of the region 1 FACs. The SR is defined to occur at the latitude where the vector goes to minimum and changes direction by approximately 180°.It is found that SRs mainly occur when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has a southward-directed Bz- component and in the latitude range of about 70°–80°. SRs in the dusk sector occur predominantly when the azimuthal component By is positive and in the dawn sector when By is negative, irrespective of the sign of Bz These results agree with the known merging process of IMF with magnetopause field lines. When SRs occur on both dawn and dusk sectors, the residuals over the entire polar cap are nearly uniform in direction and magnitude, indicating negligible polar currents. Similar behaviour is observed during highly disturbed conditions usually associated with large negative values of Bz.Forty-one Magsat orbits with such SRs are quantitatively modelled for preliminary case studies of the resulting current distribution. It is found that SRs, in the plane perpendicular to the geomagnetic field, for the current vectors and the magnetic vector residuals (perturbations relative to the unperturbed field) occur at almost the same latitudes. The electrojet intensities range from 1.2 × 104 to 6.5 × 105 A (amperes). A preliminary classification of polar cap boundary crossings characterized by vector rotations rather than SRs also shows that they tend to occur mainly for negative Bz.  相似文献

Alpha radiative capture reactions offers the opportunity to study nuclear processes of astrophysical interest. Most of the existing data on these processes have been gained by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy, where the measurements are very difficult due to the low cross sections and the relatively high background in the detectors. We have calculated the two-alpha radiative capture process and excitations of 8Be nuclei interacting using current conservation realistic two- and three-nucleon potentials, at settler energies. We have presented the results of Faddeev-type calculations for current conservation of two- and three-body interactions to cluster nuclear reactions. Our results for cross sections are found to be 128 (140) nanobarn for the current conservation two-body (two-body and three-body) interactions, at the resonance energy with an 14 % (6 %) accuracy in comparison with the recent experimental data, respectively. The results for B (E2) value of 8Be is also found to be 21.7 (20.8) e 2 fm 4, in comparison with the very recent experimental data with an error of 7 % (2 %). Our calculation show that the bulk energies are corrected by improved few-body potentials.  相似文献

Observations of the dwarf Irr galaxy IC 10 have been performed at the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope with the SCORPIO focal reducer in the mode of a slit spectrograph. The ionized-gas emission spectrum in the region of intense current star formation has been investigated. The relative oxygen, N+, and S+ abundances in about twenty H II regions and the synchrotron superbubble have been estimated. The galaxy-averaged oxygen abundance is 12 + log(O/H) = 8.17 ± 0.35 and the metallicity is Z = 0.18 ± 0.14Z . The metallicity found by comparing diagnostic diagrams with photoionization models is shown to be less reliable than its estimate based on strong oxygen lines.  相似文献

We have monitored S Ori 45, a young, low-mass (20 M j up) brown dwarf of the σ Orionis cluster (~3 Myr, 352 pc), using optical and near-infrared filters. S Ori 45 (spectral type M8.5) is found to be multi-periodic with a dominant modulation at 2.5–3.5 h, and a short modulation at about 46 min. We ascribe the longer of these modulations to a rotation period. After comparing these results with observations of more massive cluster brown dwarfs and field brown dwarfs, we conclude that substellar objects present rotational and angular momentum evolution. We have also obtained intermediate-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of S Ori 70, which is a T-class, free-floating planetary candidate member in the σ Orionis cluster. Its observed spectrum has been compared to data of field brown dwarfs of similar types and to theoretical spectra computed for different surface temperatures and gravities. We conclude that S Ori 70 has a significantly cool, low-gravity atmosphere. This supports the young age of this object and its membership in the cluster. From state-of-the-art evolutionary models, the mass of S Ori 70 is estimated at 3 times the Jovian mass (+5 ?2 M j up), challenging current stellar/substellar formation models. S Ori 70 remains the lowest mass object so far identified in any open cluster.  相似文献

We use long-slit spectra taken with the William Herschel Telescope on La Palma and high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging to study the gas kinematic in the halo of the ultraluminous infrared/radio galaxy PKS1345+12 (z=0.122). Our long-slit spectra show line splitting at the locations of massive star clusters ( $10^{6}<M_{\mathrm{SSC}}^{\mathrm{YSP}}<10^{7}$ M), indicating that they are moving at up to 450 km?s?1 with respect to the local ambient gas. Given their kinematics, it is plausible that these super star clusters have been formed either in fast-moving gas streams or tidal tails that are falling back into the nuclear regions as part of the merger process, or as a consequence of jet-induced star formation linked to the extended, diffuse radio emission detected in the halo of the galaxy.  相似文献

The satellite NOAA-B (1980-43A) was launched in May 1980 into an orbit with perigee height near 260 km and apogee height 1440 km, at an inclination of 92.2°.The lifetime was 11 months. The orbit has been determined at 40 epochs between October 1980 and May 1981 from about 3000 radar and optical observations. The average orbital accuracy, radial and cross-track, was about 100 m, with rather better accuracy in the final 14 days. The variation of orbital inclination has been analysed to determine two good values of atmospheric rotation rate, namely 1.10 ± 0.10 rev day?1 at 300 km (average local time) and 1.15 ± 0.06 rev day?1 at 225 km (evening). The effect of atmospheric rotation on the precession of the orbital plane of an actual satellite has never previously been detected; it is clearly apparent for 1980-43A in its last days and conforms to the expected theoretical change. The variation of perigee height has been analysed to determine ten values of atmospheric density scale height, for heights of 280–370 km. These values, accurate to about 3%, exceed by 15% the values indicated by the COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere. Solar activity was higher in the years 1980–1981 than at any time since early 1958 and it appears that the CIRA model underestimates the density and density scale height at high levels of solar activity.  相似文献

I study the question of whether the asymmetry of 56Ni ejecta that results in the asymmetry of the Hα emission line at the nebular epoch of the type-IIP supernova SN 2004dj can account for the recently detected polarization of the supernova radiation. I have developed a model of the Hα profile and luminosity with nonthermal ionization and excitation in a spherically symmetric envelope for an asymmetric bipolar 56Ni distribution. I have calculated the polarized radiation transfer against the background of the recovered electron density distribution. The observed polarization is shown to be reproduced at the nebular epoch around day 140 for the same parameters of the envelope, and the 56Ni distribution for which the evolution of the Hα luminosity and profile is explained. Yet the model polarization decreases with time more slowly than is observed. The origin of the additional component responsible for the early polarization on day 107 is discussed.  相似文献

We present the results of an 8-year program of spectrophometry of the Galilean satellites of Jupiter that was undertaken using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) Spacecraft. The ultraviolet geometric albedos of all four satellites are low. This is consistent with the hypothesis that sulfurous materials escaping from the surface of Io are being distributed by magnetospheric processes to the surfaces of the other three objects. Although iron bearing silicates may also cause UV darkening, these materials also have spectral features in the visible region of the spectrum which are not found in the spectra of the Galilean satellites. For Io, we find that the ultraviolet geometric albedo is very low (Puv ∼ 0.04). The trailing hemisphere has an albedo that is higher than that of the leading hemisphere. This is opposite of what is observed at visual wavelengths. The decrease of albedo shortward of 0.33 μm is consistent with groundbased observations (Nelson and Hapke, 1978) and the laboratory reflection spectrum of sulfur dioxide frost. The hemispheric albedo asymmetry is consistent with a variable distribution of the frost, it being present in greater abundance on Io's leading hemisphere. The strenght of this feature has not changed with respect to longitude over the8 years of this study. The phase coefficients and opposition surges at ultraviolet wavelenghts indicate that Io's surface regolith is very porous. Europa has the highest ultraviolet albedo of all the Galilean satellites (Puv ∼ 0.2). This not inconsistent with the hypothesis of recent resurfacing. However, this albedo is not high enough to be consistent with a surface of pure water ice. We confirm a previously reported ultraviolet spectral asymmetry between Europa's leading and trailing hemispheres. The new data are consistent with the previous analyses which interpreted this as the spectral signature of sulfur ions from the Jovian magnetosphere which had been embedded preferentially on the trailing side of Europa's predominately water ice.surface. The opposition surge observed for Europa's trailing side is greater than that for the leading side. This implies that the trailing side is less compact than the leading side, perhaps due to gardening from the ion implantation process. Ganymede's ultraviolet albedo (Puv ∼ 0.10) is lower than Europa's. Ganymede has an ultraviolet spectral asymmetry that is similar to Europa's for wavelenghts longer than 0.28 μm. However, at wavelengths shorter than 0.28 μm, the two objects have different opposite hemispherical spectral ratios, indicating that the same mechanism cannot be used to explain the ultraviolet spectral albedo of both objects. One possible explanation is that ozone is present in addition to sulfur embedded on Ganymede's surface. The ultraviolet albedo and opposite hemispherical spectral ratio of Calisto is spectrally flat, indicating that the surface is covered by a material that is spectrally absorbing in the ultraviolet but has no change in absorption at the ultraviolet wavelenghts. The orbital phase variation in the ultraviolet indicates that the absorber is assymmetrically distributed in longitude.  相似文献
