Observations of type-B red and normal aurora were made with a high-speed multichannel photometer and a digital grating spectrometer. The ratio I(O2+ 1N; 2, 0 + 3, 1)I(N2+ 1N; 0, 3) measured in the 5200–5300 Å region with the spectrometer was found to increase by about 16% from normal to type-B aurora. This small change is difficult to reconcile with a height below 90 km for the red border. In the type-B aurora, λ 5577 was weakened by a factor between 1.9 and 3.8 while the ratio I(N2 1P; 5, 2)I(N2+ 1N) was enhanced less than 20%. Rapid intensity variations in the type-B lower border were observed in the λ 5577 and other channels of the photometer. A revised time dependent auroral excitation-ion chemistry model is used in an attempt to reproduce the observations. The observed weakening of λ 5577 could be produced at heights equal to or less than 100 km while the short observed time lag of λ 5577 on the N2+ 1N emission is easier to explain at 100 km than at 80 km. It is concluded that some type-B lower borders may occur near 100 km although it is recognized that there is good evidence rare deep crimson lower borders lie at 80 km or below. The mechanism for the excitation of O(1S) is considered in the light of these results. None of the mechanisms examined is satisfactory on the basis of currently accepted atmospheric models and quenching rate coefficients.  相似文献

Height profiles of auroral emissions at 3914 Å, 4861 Å, and 5577 Å were obtained in two rocket flights through medium intensity stable aurora. The 3914 Å N2+ integral intensity data were compared with intensity variations predicted by an auroral model for a range of primary electron energy spectra. The observed profiles for the two flights were well reproduced respectively by a 5.6 keV mono-energtic flux and by a flux with an exponential spectrum cutting off around 12 to 15 keV. The data for 5577 Å (available only above 120 km) bear a constant ratio to that for 3914 Å. The emission profiles derived for 3914 Å, peak at 115 and 107 km respectively.  相似文献

Optical spectra of the cleft aurora in the region 5000–8500 Å were measured in December, 1977 at Cape Parry, N.W.T. A Michelson interferometer was used at a resolution of 10 cm?1. The auroral features observed were OI (5577, 6300-64, 7774, 8446 Å), OII (7319-30 Å), NI (5200 Å), Hα, O2 atm (1,1), some weak N21P bands and possibly some Meinel bands of N2+. In addition, nightglow emissions of Na and OH were observed. Theoretical predictions of the OI and NI emission rates using the model of Link et al. (1980) fit the observed rates reasonably well if a 40 eV Maxwellian incident electron spectrum is assumed. The predicted rates for OII exceed the observed value by a factor of 4. It is suggested that the ionization cross-section may be over-estimated.  相似文献

This is a report upon further data obtained from the auroral OI 5577 Å emission with a Wide Angle Michelson Interferometer (WAMI), and upon our first observations made with it on the 6300 Å emission. The method used for converting emission intensities and temperatures to auroral electron fluxes and energy spectra is described. Data for the 5577 Å emission are presented for the (lack of) heating in auroral forms, vertical temperature profiles in aurora, electron flux and energy spectrum variations in pulsating aurora, and a ‘cold’ subvisual auroral arc. Data from the OI 6300 Å emission are presented for the diurnal variation of exospheric temperature and for the thermalization of O(1D) in the F-region.  相似文献

The results of recent laboratory experiments suggest that the reaction N+ + O2 → NO+ + O(1S) is the principal source of O(1S) in aurora. A negligible time delay between auroral ionization and O(1S) production is associated with this indirect process, which is a necessary condition for a viable mechanism. The 5577A?3914A? volume emission rate ratio associated with this production source remains constant with altitude. The problems encountered by the currently accepted source of O(1S), the reaction of N2(A3Σ) molecules with atomic oxygen are explored, and the contributions of this and other reactions to the auroral green line emission are reevaluated.  相似文献

It is proposed that energy transfer from excited O2 contributes to the production of O(1S) in aurora. An analysis is presented of the OI5577 Å emission in an IBC II+ aurora between 90 and 130 km. The volume emission rate of the emission at these altitudes is consistent with the production rate of O(1S) by energy transfer to O(3P) from N2 in the A3Σ2+ state and O2 in the A3Σu+, C3Δc1Σu? states, the N2A state being populated by direct electron impact excitation and BA cascade and the excited O2 states by direct excitation. Above the peak emission altitude (~105 km), energy transfer from N2A is the predominant production mechanism for O(1S). Below it, the contribution from quenching of the O2 states becomes significant.  相似文献

Recent laboratory measurements of the deactivation rate constants for O(1S) have suggested that the dominant production mechanism for the green line in the nightglow is a two-step process. A similar mechanism involving energy transfer from an excited state of molecular oxygen is considered as a potential source of the OI (5577 Å) emission in the aurora. It is shown that the mechanism, O2 + e → O21 + e O21 + O → O2 + O(1S), is consistent with auroral observations; the intermediate excited state has been tentatively identified as the O2(c1?u) state. For the proposed energy transfer mechanism to be the primary source of the auroral green line, the peak electron impact cross-section for O21 production must be approximately 2 × 10?17 cm2.  相似文献

Altitude distributions of electronically excited atoms and molecules of oxygen and nitrogen in the aurora have been obtained by means of rocket-borne wavelength scanning interference filter photometers launched from Fort Churchill, Manitoba (58.4°N, 94.1°W) on January 23, 1974. Atomic oxygen densities derived from mass spectrometer measurements obtained during the flight are used in conjunction with the volume emission rate ratio of the N2(C3Πu?B3Πg) (0-0) second positive and N2(A3Σu+, v = 1?X1Σg+) Vegard-Kaplan bands to derive a rate constant for quenching of the N2(A3Σu+, v = 1) level with O(3P) of 1.7(±0.8) × 10?11 cm3 s?1 These data, together with O den derived from the O2(b1Σg+) state nightglow emission observed during the rocket ascent, suggest that quenching of the N2(A3Σu+, v = 1) level by O2 has a significant positive temperature dependence. The processes involved in the production and loss of the N2(A3Σu+) state are considered and energy transfer from the N2(A3Σu+) state to O(3P) is found to be a significant source of the OI 5577 Å green line in this aurora at altitudes below 130 km. Emission from the NO(A2Σ+?X2Π) gamma bands was not detected, an observation which is consistent with the mass spectrometer data obtained during the flight indicating that the NO density was <108 cm3 at 110 km. On the basis of previous rocket and satellite measurements of the NO gamma bands, energy transfer from the N2(A3Σu+) state to NO(X2Π) is shown to be an insignificant source of the gamma bands in aurora. Altitude profiles of the N2(a1Πg?X1Σg+) Lyman-Birge-Hopfield band system are presented.  相似文献

A method of time series analysis termed impulse response estimation is described. The method is applied to simultaneous ground based photometry measurements of the N2+ ING band at 4278Å and the 5577Å line emission in order to estimate the response in 5577Å to a discrete impulse in excitation rate. From these impulse response estimates the contribution from indirect excitation processes to the O(1S) state is estimated to be of the order of 80% and the lifetime of the associated intermediate species to be approximately 0.1 s. Effective lifetimes for the O(1S) excited state are obtained in the range 0.49–0.86 s with a distribution showing a sharp cut-off at 0.8 s and a mean of 0.71 s.  相似文献

Photometers on the ISIS-II spacecraft provide a view of the atomic oxygen 5577 and 6300 Å emissions and the N2+ 3914 A? emission detected as dayside aurora in the magnetospheric cleft region. The 6300 Å emission forms a continuous and permanent band across the noon sector, at about 78° invariant latitude, with a defined region of maximum intensity that is never less than 2kR (uncorrected for albedo), and is centred near magnetic noon. There are significant differences in the intensity patterns on either side of noon and their responses to geomagnetic activity. Discrete 3914 Å auroral forms appear within this region, at preferred locations that cannot be precisely specified, but which tend to the poleward edge of the 6300 Å emission in the evening, and the equatorward edge in the morning where the difference between the two emissions is greatest. It is concluded that the discrete auroras observed by all-sky cameras in the day sector do follow the 6300 Å emission through the cleft region, though a definite cleft boundary is not defined. Substantial 6300 Å emission having a peak intensity near noon is also seen in the low latitude “outer auroral belt”, while the diffuse 3914 Å emission tends to show a relative minimum near noon. On the morning side the 3914 Å intensity is displaced to lower latitude and earlier local times, compared to the 6300 Å emission.  相似文献

A self-consistent, time-dependent numerical model of the aurora and high-latitude ionos-phere has been developed. It is used to study the response of ionospheric and atmospheric properties in regions subjected to electron bombardment. The time history of precipitation events is arbitrarily specified and computations are made for a variety of electron spectral energy distributions and flux magnitudes. These include soft electron precipitation, such as might occur on the poleward edge of the auroral oval and within the magnetospheric cleft, and harder spectra representative of particle precipitation commonly observed within and on the equatorward edge of the auroral oval. Both daytime and night-time aurorae are considered. The results of the calculations show that the response of various ionospheric and atmospheric parameters depends upon the spectral energy distribution and flux magnitudes of the precipitating electrons during the auroral event. Various properties respond with different time constants that are influenced by coupling processes described by the interactive model. The soft spectrum aurora affects mainly the ionospheric F region, where it causes increases in the electron density, electron temperature and the 6300 Å red line intensity from normal quiet background levels during both daytime and night-time aurora. The fractional variation is greater for the night-time aurora. The hard spectrum aurorae, in general, do not greatly affect the F-2 region of the ionosphere; however, in the F-1 and E regions, large increases from background conditions are shown to occur in the electron and ion temperatures, electron and ion densities, airglow emission rates and minor neutral constituent densities during the build-up phase of the auroral event. During the decay phase of the aurora, most of these properties decrease at nearly the same rate as the specified particle precipitation flux. However, some ionospheric and atmospheric species have a long memory of the auroral event. The odd nitrogen species N(4S) and NO probably do not ever reach steady-state densities between auroral storms.  相似文献

We investigate the dissociative recombination contribution to I(5577) and I(6300) of [OI] as a function of low energy cutoff for two measured solar proton spectra. The volume ionization rate profiles used in the calculation are obtained using a detailed atomic cross section approach in the continuous slowing down approximation. The ratio of the dissociative recombination contribution to the direct impact contribution for both the 5577 Å and 6300 Å [OI] emissions is found to be dependent upon the low energy cutoff. This ratio has a nominal value of ~2.0 for the 5577 Å [OI] emission and ~0.25 for the 6300 Å [OI] emission. The I(5577)/I(3914) and I(6300)/I(3914) ratios including the direct and dissociative recombination contributions are strongly dependent upon the low energy cutoff of the spectrum. We have also investigated F-layer enhancements resulting from the low energy spectrum component. For the Mizera et al. (1972) spectrum with a low energy cutoff of 12.4 keV, we find an NmF2 of ~4.5 × 103 electrons/cm3 or about 10 per cent of the ionization required to maintain the dip pole at a value of 5 × 104 electrons/cm3. Extension of the cutoff to 1 keV results in ~1 × 104 electrons/cm3, or about 20 per cent of the required maintenance ionization.  相似文献

Recent flowing afterglow measurements have shown that the reaction of N+ with O2 produces 70 ± 30% of the oxygen atom product as O(1D) and < 0.1% as O(1S). These results indicate that this reaction does not contribute to the auroral green line emission (5577 Å), but can account for ~10% of the observed red line (6300 Å) auroral emission.  相似文献

One of the most striking and persistent features in high latitude regions as seen by the ISIS-2 scanning auroral photometer is a fairly uniform belt of diffuse auroral emission extending along the auroral oval. Indications are that this region follows, contributes to, and may in a sense actually define the auroral oval during quiet times. The diffuse belt is sharply defined at its equatorward edge, which is located at an invariant latitude of about 65° in the midnight sector during relatively low magnetic activity (Kp = 1?3). The poleward edge of the region is not as sharply defined but is typically at about 68°. Discrete auroras (arcs and bands) are located, in general, near the poleward boundary of the diffuse aurora. The position of the belt appears to be relatively unaffected by the occurrence of individual substorms, even when discrete forms have moved well poleward. Representative intensities at 5577 Å are 1–2 kR (corrected for albedo) at quiet times and may reach 5 kR during an auroral substorm. It appears that the mantle aurora and proton aurora constitute this diffuse aurora in the midnight sector. Precipitating protons and electrons both contribute to the emissions in this region.  相似文献

The ratio of the intensity of the oxygen green line at 5577 A to that of the N2+ First Negative band (0, 0) at 3914 A in morning and evening pulsating aurora has been observed using a ground-based scanning photometer which scans the entire sky in 2.6 sec with 2° resolution. The ratio I(5577)/I(3914), after corrections for scattering and extinction made on the basis of hemispheric averages of the intensities at each wavelength, is up to 50% lower in the pulsations than in the surrounding diffuse aurora and in pre-breakup discrete auroras. In morning pulsations this ratio showed systematic decreases with time and with increasing intensity. We report here what we believe to be the first quantitative intensity measurements made of the rare phenomenon evening pulsations. These also show a reduced ratio and a tendency for the ratio to decrease with time. The range of previously published values of the 5577 A time constant in pulsating auroras would lead to ratio variations of the same magnitude as those reported here, suggesting that quenching effects may be more important than atmospheric composition changes in determining intensity ratios within the altitude range of pulsating auroras.  相似文献

Electron impact excitation of vibrational levels in the ground electronic state and seven excited electronic states in O2 have been simulated for an International Brightness Coefficient-Category 2+ (IBC II+) night-time aurora, in order to predict O2 excited state number densities and volume emission rates (VERs). These number densities and VERs are determined as a function of altitude (in the range 80-350 km) in the present study. Recent electron impact excitation cross-sections for O2 were combined with appropriate altitude dependent IBC II+ auroral secondary electron distributions and the vibrational populations of the eight O2 electronic states were determined under conditions of statistical equilibrium. Pre-dissociation, atmospheric chemistry involving atomic and molecular oxygen, radiative decay and quenching of excited states were included in this study. This model predicts relatively high number densities for the metastable electronic states and could represent a significant source of stored energy in O2* for subsequent thermospheric chemical reactions. Particular attention is directed towards the emission intensities of the infrared (IR) atmospheric (1.27 μm), Atmospheric (0.76 μm) and the atomic oxygen 1S1D transition (5577 Å) lines and the role of electron-driven processes in their origin. Aircraft, rocket and satellite observations have shown both the IR atmospheric and Atmospheric lines are dramatically enhanced under auroral conditions and, where possible, we compare our results to these measurements. Our calculated 5577 Å intensity is found to be in good agreement with values independently measured for a medium strength IBC II+ aurora.  相似文献

The absolute cross-sections for the excitation of the 989 Å, 1027 Å, 7990 Å, 8446 Å, 1.1287 μm and 1.3164 μm multiplets of atomic oxygen by electron impact dissociation of O2 are reported. The radiative branching ratios for these transitions are calculated from these results and compared with the NBS compilation of Wiese et al. (1966) and the recent theoretical calculations of Pradhan and Saraph (1977). The cascade models of O+ radiative recombination and of electron-impact excitation of the OI(3S) state in the terrestrial airglow are discussed in the light of the laboratory measurements, and the effects of the resonant absorption of components of the λ 989 Å and λ. 1027 Å multiplets by the Birge-Hopfield band system of N2 are investigated. This process is shown to depend sensitively on the N2 vibrational temperature and to cause characteristic changes in the OI e.u.v. emission spectrum in auroras and in the sunlit F-region at high exospheric temperatures. It is also suggested that the λ 1027 Å radiation observed in auroral spectra is actually due to molecular nitrogen band emission that has been enhanced by entrapment effects and not to the excitation of the 2p 3P-3d 3D0 transition of atomic oxygen as believed previously.  相似文献

The rate at which O(1S) is quenched in the atmosphere has been calculated as a function of altitude in the 75–115 km region. Recent measurements of the temperature-dependent O 2 quenching rate coefficient have been used, while for quenching by O(3P), an expression combining new theoretical and experimental results is employed. For the O(3P) altitude profile, the Jacchia (1971) model is chosen. The quenching profile shows a pronounced minimum quenching rate at about 87 km. It is concluded that different studies carried out on pulsating Type-B red aurorae, which extract an O(1S) quenching rate from the time lag between N 2+(B?X) emission and 5577-Åemission, can now be interpreted as indicating an altitude range for these aurorae of 84–89 km. This conclusion is in accord with observations made on artificial aurorae.  相似文献

A recent assessment by Rees (1984) of the contribution made to the excitation of O(1S) in the aurora by the reaction of N2(A3Σ+) with O(3P) is re-examined. It is demonstrated that the contribution attributed to this reaction may have been seriously under-estimated and it is shown that the results of recent laboratory investigations do not preclude this reaction as a major source of O(1s) in the aurora.  相似文献

Simultaneous measurements of the night airglow OI 5577 Å and OH (8,3) band have been carried out at Cachoeira Paulista (23°S, 45°W), Brazil since 1976. Cross correlation analyses between the nocturnal variations of these emissions and also with the OH rotational temperature (ROT) for various time shifts are presented. It is found that OH (8,3) is well correlated with ROT but with a time lag of about 1 h. The variations of OI 5577 Å lead OH (8,3) by about 2–3 h and ROT covaries with 5577 Å with a time lag less than 1 h. For the sake of comparison, OI 5577 Å, OH and NaD data from a number of IQSY stations have been analysed. It is noted that (1) OI 5577 Å leads OH by about 2 h at mid-latitude stations and (2) OH is well correlated with Na 5893 Å with a time lag of less than 1 h. The presence of the phase lagged correlation patterns between OH/5577 Å, OH/ROT and OH/NaD indicates vertical propagation of a wavelike perturbation of the upper atmosphere.  相似文献
