The lunar interior is comprised of two major petrological provinces: (1) an outer zone several hundred km thick which experienced partial melting and crystallization differentiation 4.4–4.6 b.y. ago to form the lunar crust together with an underlying complementary zone of ultramafic cumulates and residua, and (2) the primordial deep interior which was the source region for mare basalts (3.2–3.8 b.y.) and had previously been contaminated to varying degrees with highly fractionated material derived from the 4.4–4.6 b.y. differentiation event. In both major petrologic provinces, basaltic magmas have been produced by partial melting. The chemical characteristics and high-pressure phase relationships of these magmas can be used to constrain the bulk compositions of their respective source regions.Primitive low-Ti mare basalts (e.g., 12009, 12002, 15555 and Green Glass) possessing high normative olivine and high Mg and Cr contents, provide the most direct evidence upon the composition of the primordial deep lunar interior. This composition, as estimated on the basis of high pressure equilibria displayed by the above basalts, combined with other geochemical criteria, is found to consist of orthopyroxene + clinopyroxene + olivine with total pyroxenes > olivine, 100 MgO/(MgO + FeO) = 75–80, about 4% of CaO and Al2O3 and 2× chondritic abundances of REE, U and Th. This composition is similar to that of the earth's mantle except for a higher pyroxene/olivine ratio and lower 100 MgO/(MgO + FeO).The lunar crust is believed to have formed by plagioclase elutriation within a vast ocean of parental basaltic magma. The composition of the latter is found experimentally by removing liquidus plagioclase from the observed mean upper crust (gabbroic anorthosite) composition, until the resulting composition becomes multiply saturated with plagioclase and a ferromagnesian phase (olivine). This parental basaltic composition is almost identical with terrestrial oceanic tholeiites, except for partial depletion in the two most volatile components, Na2 and SiO2. Similarity between these two most abundant classes of lunar and terrestrial basaltic magmas strongly implies corresponding similarities between their source regions. The bulk composition of the outer 400 km of the Moon as constrained by the 4.6-4.4 b.y. parental basaltic magma is found to be peridotitic, with olivine > pyroxene, 100 MgO/ (MgO + FeO) 86, and about 2× chondritic abundances of Ca, Al and REE. The Moon thus appears to have a zoned structure, with the deep interior (below 400 km) possessing somewhat higher contents of FeO and SiO2 than the outer 400 km. This zoned model, derived exclusively on petrological grounds, provides a quantitative explanation of the Moon's mean density, moment of inertia and seismic velocity profile. The bulk composition of the entire Moon, thus obtained, is very similar to the pyrolite model composition for the Earth's mantle, except that the Moon is depleted in Na (and other volatile elements) and somewhat enriched in iron. The similarity in major element composition extends also to the abundances of REE, U and Th. These compositional similarities, combined with the identity in oxygen isotope ratios between the Moon and the Earth's mantle, are strongly suggestive of a common genetic relationship.  相似文献

Based on a large body of observational data on radio emission from the Moon, we study the dependence of lunar radio temperature variations on illumination conditions. The data were obtained with the RATAN-600 radio telescope with a high sensitivity and resolution, which has not yet been used to construct radio images of the Moon. The harmonic parameters (amplitudes and phase angles) were determined both for the average Moon and for regions with temperature anomalies revealed by the RATAN-600 observations. These parameters allow the physical properties of the lunar soil to be investigated. The distribution of the loss-angle tangent (tan ), one of the characteristics of the lunar material, over the Moon was determined. The loss-angle tangent is related to the content of ilmenite, a rock containing oxygen, iron, and titanium, in the lunar soil. Studies of the ilmenite distribution on the Moon are particularly important in view of the prospects for building a habitable lunar base that needs oxygen. It is relatively easy and cheap to extract oxygen, iron, and titanium from ilmenite.  相似文献

A new liquefaction theory for the origin of the flat marial and Cayley areas on the lunar surface is described. It is supposed that the flat terrain in these areas resulted from periods in the development of the Moon when these regions, although not liquid, had a sufficiently low viscosity for the surfaces to relax more or less completely to a level form. To account for this low viscosity a model is developed in which, within these regions and for relatively short periods in the early history of the Moon, preferentially high temperatures were maintained close to the lunar surface. The paper examines in some detail the possibility that these high temperatures may have resulted from instabilities in the lunar heat flow pattern caused by the presence of a surface layer of very low thermal conductivity produced by the debris of early meteorite impacts.A comparison is made between current models for the formation of the lunar surface and the theory here proposed: the advantages of the latter are enumerated and discussed.Normally at Queen Mary College, University of London, England.  相似文献

The existence of fossil lunar magnetism has caused speculation that the Moon had, at one time, an internally produced dynamo magnetic field. Quantitative analysis of this idea, constrained by the largest iron lunar core compatible with observations, implies that the Moon would have had to rotate faster than its breakup angular velocity in order to support a dynamo magnetic field.A paper presented at the Lunar Science Institute Conference on Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration of the Moon and Planets, January 10–12, 1973.  相似文献

The valences of Ti, V, and Cr in olivine and pyroxene, important indicators of the fO2 of the source region of their host rocks, can be readily measured nondestructively by XANES (X‐ray absorption near edge structure) spectroscopy, but little such work has been done on lunar rocks, and there is some uncertainty regarding the presence of Ti3+ in lunar silicates and the redox state of the lunar mantle. This is the first study involving direct XANES measurement of valences of multivalent cations in lunar rocks. Because high alumina activity facilitates substitution of Ti cations into octahedral rather than tetrahedral sites in pyroxene and Ti3+ only enters octahedral sites, two aluminous basalts from Apollo 14, 14053 and 14072, were studied. Most pyroxene contains little or no detectable Ti3+, but in both samples relatively early, magnesian pyroxene was found that has Ti valences that are not within error of 4; in 14053, this component has an average Ti valence of 3.81 ± 0.06 (i.e., Ti3+/[Ti3+ + Ti4+ = 0.19]). This pyroxene has relatively low atomic Ti/Al ratios (<0.4) due to crystallization before plagioclase, contrary to the long‐held belief that lunar pyroxene with Ti/Al > 0.5 contains Ti3+ and pyroxene with lower ratios does not. Later pyroxene, with lower Mg/Fe and higher Ti/Al ratios, has higher proportions of Ti (all Ti4+) in tetrahedral sites. All pyroxene analyzed contains divalent Cr, ranging from 15 to 30% of the Cr present, and all but one analysis spot contains divalent V, accounting for 0 to 40% (typically 20–30%) of the V present. Three analyses of olivine in 14053 do not show any Ti3+, but Ti valences in 14072 olivine range from 4 down to 3.70 ± 0.10. In 14053 olivine, ~50% of the Cr and 60% of the V are divalent. In 14072 olivine, the divalent percentages are ~20% for Cr and 20–60% for V. These results indicate significant proportions of divalent Cr and V and limited amounts of trivalent Ti in the parental melts, especially when crystal/liquid partitioning preferences are taken into account. These features are consistent with an fO2 closer to IW ? 2 than to IW ? 1. Apollo 15 basalt 15555, analyzed for comparison with A‐14 materials, has olivine with strongly reduced Cr (Cr2+/(Cr2+ + Cr3+) ~0.9). Basalts from different sites may record redox differences between source regions.  相似文献

A new method for determining the early history of the Earth-Moon system is described. Called the study of lunar paleotides, it describes a method for explaining features of the remnant lunar gravity field, and the generation of the lunar mascons. A method for the determination of Earth-Moon distances compared with the radiometric ages of the maria is developed. It is shown that the Moon underwent strong anomalous gravitational tidal forces, for a durationt<106yr, prior to the formation of the mascon surfaces. As these tidal forces had not been present at the time of the formation of the Moon, this shows that the Moon could not have been formed in orbit about the Earth. There are tides in the affairs of men which, taken at the flood, lead on to fortune... Observations of the lunar luminescence are reported for a dozen of specific Moon features using the line-depth method with a high resolution spectroscopic technique. The data indicate a variation of the Moon proper emission as a function of the phase angle which is interpreted as a proof of the thermoluminescent origin of this emission.  相似文献

The notion of a dry Moon has recently been challenged by the discovery of high water contents in lunar apatites and in melt inclusions within olivine crystals from two pyroclastic glasses. The highest and most compelling water contents were found in pyroclastic glasses that are not very common on the lunar surface. To obtain more representative constraints on the volatile content of the lunar interior, we measured the Zn content, a moderately volatile element, of mineral and rock fragments in lunar soils collected during Apollo missions. We here confirm that the Moon is significantly more depleted in Zn than the Earth. Combining Zn with existing K and Rb data on similar rocks allows us to anchor a new volatility scale based on the bond energy of nonsiderophile elements in their condensed phases. Extrapolating the volatility curve to H shows that the bulk of the lunar interior must be dry (≤1 ppm). This contrasts with the water content of the mantle sources of pyroclastic glasses, inferred to contain up to approximately 40 ppm water based on H2O/Ce ratios. These observations are best reconciled if the pyroclastic glasses derive from localized water‐rich heterogeneities in a dominantly dry lunar interior. We argue that, although late addition of 0.015% of a chondritic veneer to the Moon seems required to explain the abundance of platinum group elements (Day et al. 2007), the volatile content of the added material was clearly heterogeneous.  相似文献

Abstract— Solid metal/liquid metal partition coefficients for Ag and Pd were determined experimentally as a function of the S concentration of the metallic liquid. Silver is incompatible in solid metal and strongly sensitive to the S content of the metallic liquid; partition coefficients for Ag decrease more than an order of magnitude with increasing S content of the metallic liquid and can be expressed as: where k(Ag) is the molar solid metal/liquid metal partition coefficient and XS is the molar S content of the metallic liquid. The partition coefficient of Pd is less variable but changes from modestly incompatible to modestly compatible in solid metal with increasing S content of the metallic liquid: With these new partition coefficients for Pd and a fractional crystallization model, Pd abundance trends recorded in iron meteorite groups are modeled successfully. Measured Ag distribution between troilite-rich nodules and adjacent metal in iron meteorites also agree well with experimental solid metal/liquid metal equilibrium values. However, observed Pd metal/nodule distributions do not agree with experimentally determined partition coefficients, which suggests a more complex history than simple solid metal/liquid metal equilibrium.  相似文献

The acceleration of the mean lunar longitude has a small effect on the periods of most terms in a Fourier expansion of the longitude. There are several planetary perturbation terms that have small amplitudes, but whose periods are close to the resonant period of the lunar libration in longitude. Some of these terms are moving toward resonance, some are moving away from resonance, and the periods of those terms that do not include the Delaunay variables in their arguments are not moving. Because of its acceleration of longitude, the Moon is receding from the Earth, so the magnitude of the restoring torque that the Earth exerts on the rotating Moon is gradually attenuating; thus resonance itself is moving, but at a much slower rate than the periods of the accelerating planetary perturbations. There are five planetary perturbation terms from the ELP-2000 Ephemeris (with amplitudes of 0.00001 or greater) that have passed through resonance in the past two million years. One of them is of special interest because it appears to be the excitation source of a supposed free libration in longitude that has been detected by the lunar laser ranging experiment. The amplitude of the term is only 0.00021 but it could be the source of the 1 amplitude free libration term if the viscoelastic properties of the Moon are similar to those of the Earth.  相似文献

Density models for the Moon, including the effects of temperature and pressure, can satisfy the mass and moment of inertia of the Moon and the presence of a low density crust indicated by the seismic refraction results only if the lunar mantle is chemically or mineralogically inhomogeneous. IfC/MR 2 exceeds 0.400, the inferred density of the upper mantle must be greater than that of the lower mantle at similar conditions by at least 0.1 g cm–3 for any of the temperature profiles proposed for the lunar interior. The average mantle density lies between 3.4 and 3.5 g cm–3, though the density of the upper mantle may be greater. The suggested density inversion is gravitationally unstable, but the implied deviatoric stresses in the mantle need be no larger than those associated with lunar gravity anomalies. UsingC/MR 3=0.400 and the recent seismic evidence suggesting a thin, high density zone beneath the crust and a partially molten core, successful density models can be found for a range of temperature profiles. Temperature distributions as cool as several inferred from the lunar electrical conductivity profile would be excluded. The density and probable seismic velocity for the bulk of the mantle are consistent with a pyroxenite composition and a 100 MgO/(MgO+FeO) molecular ratio of less than 80.Communication presented at the Lunar Science Institute Conference on Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration of the Moon and Planets, January 10–12, 1973.  相似文献

Evaluation of selenographic data obtained with use of different observational means require the formulation of rigorous algorithms connecting the systems of coordinates, which the various methods have been referred to. The lunar principal axes of inertia are suggested as most appropriate for reference in lunar mapping and selenographic coordinate catalogues. The connection between the instantaneous axis of lunar rotation (involved in laser ranging, radar studies, astronomical observations from the surface of the Moon and VLBI observations of ALSEPs), the ecliptic system of coordinates (which in reductions of observations was considered as fixed in space), the Cassini mean selenographic coordinates (to which physical libration measures were referred), the lunar principal axes of inertia and the invariable plane of the solar system is discussed. On leave from the University of Manchester, England.Lunar Science Institute Contribution No. 138.Communication presented at the Conference on Lunar Dynamics and Observational Coordinate Systems, Held January 15–17, 1973, at the Lunar Science Institute, Houston, Tex., U.S.A.  相似文献

The equations of the physical libration of the Moon are developed using a representation of the Earth-Moon orbit as a Kepler ellipse referred to the lunar equator and expanding the lunar potential in terms of these Kepler elements. TheImproved Lunar Ephemeris is used to calculate solar perturbations, and a linear integration of all effects arising from lunar gravitational harmonics through the fourth degree performed. Aside from unobservable constant offsets of the principal axes, the main effects of the higher harmonics on longitude are: 10 six-yearly (argument), 1.2 three-yearly, 0.5 annual, and 0.1 monthly; on pole direction they are on the order of 0.5 six-yearly and 1.0 monthly. The higher harmonics must hence be taken into account in analyzing ranging data of 10 cm accuracy.Paper dedicated to Prof. Harold C. The aim of this work is to combine the model of orbital and rotational motion of the Moon developed for DE430 with up-to-date astronomical, geodynamical, and geo- and selenophysical models. The parameters of the orbit and physical libration are determined in this work from lunar laser ranging (LLR) observations made at different observatories in 1970–2013. Parameters of other models are taken from solutions that were obtained independently from LLR. A new implementation of the DE430 lunar model, including the liquid core equations, was done within the EPM ephemeris. The postfit residuals of LLR observations make evident that the terrestrial models and solutions recommended by the IERS Conventions are compatible with the lunar theory. That includes: EGM2008 gravitational potential with conventional corrections and variations from solid and ocean tides; displacement of stations due to solid and ocean loading tides; and precession-nutation model. Usage of these models in the solution for LLR observations has allowed us to reduce the number of parameters to be fit. The fixed model of tidal variations of the geopotential has resulted in a lesser value of Moon’s extra eccentricity rate, as compared to the original DE430 model with two fit parameters. A mixed model of lunar gravitational potential was used, with some coefficients determined from LLR observations, and other taken from the GL660b solution obtained from the GRAIL spacecraft mission. Solutions obtain accurate positions for the ranging stations and the five retroreflectors. Station motion is derived for sites with long data spans. Dissipation is detected at the lunar fluid core-solid mantle boundary demonstrating that a fluid core is present. Tidal dissipation is strong at both Earth and Moon. Consequently, the lunar semimajor axis is expanding by 38.20 mm/yr, the tidal acceleration in mean longitude is \(-25.90 {{}^{\prime \prime }}/\mathrm{cy}^2\), and the eccentricity is increasing by \(1.48\times 10^{-11}\) each year.  相似文献

Lunar breccias preserve the records of geologic processes on the Moon. In this study, we report the occurrence, petrography, mineralogy, and geologic significance of the observed secondary olivine veinlets in lunar feldspathic breccia meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 11273. Bulk‐rock composition measurements show that this meteorite is geochemically similar to other lunar highland meteorites. In NWA 11273, five clasts are observed to host veinlets that are dominated by interconnecting olivine mineral grains. The host clasts are mainly composed of mafic minerals (i.e., pyroxene and olivine) and probably sourced from a basaltic lithology. The studied olivine veinlets (~5 to 30 μm in width) are distributed within the mafic mineral host, but do not extend into the adjacent plagioclase. Chemically, these olivine veinlets are Fe‐richer (Fo41.4–51.9), compared with other olivine grains (Fo54.3–83.1) in lithic clasts and matrix of NWA 11273. By analogy with the secondary olivine veinlets observed in meteorites from asteroid Vesta (howardite–eucrite–diogenite group samples) and lunar mare samples, our study suggests that the newly observed olivine veinlets in NWA 11273 are likely formed by secondary deposition from a lunar fluid, rather than by crystallization from a high‐temperature silicate melt. Such fluid could be sulfur‐ and phosphorous‐poor and likely had an endogenic origin on the Moon. The new occurrence of secondary olivine veinlets in breccia NWA 11273 reveals that the fluid mobility and deposition could be a previously underappreciated geological process on the Moon.  相似文献

Abstract— We report here the petrography, mineralogy, and geochemistry of lunar meteorite Sayh al Uhaymir 300 (SaU 300). SaU 300 is dominated by a fine‐grained crystalline matrix surrounding mineral fragments (plagioclase, pyroxene, olivine, and ilmenite) and lithic clasts (mainly feldspathic to noritic). Mare basalt and KREEPy rocks are absent. Glass melt veins and impact melts are present, indicating that the rock has been subjected to a second impact event. FeNi metal and troilite grains were observed in the matrix. Major element concentrations of SaU 300 (Al2O3 21.6 wt% and FeO 8.16 wt%) are very similar to those of two basalt‐bearing feldspathic regolith breccias: Calcalong Creek and Yamato (Y‐) 983885. However, the rare earth element (REE) abundances and pattern of SaU 300 resemble the patterns of feldspathic highlands meteorites (e.g., Queen Alexandra Range (QUE) 93069 and Dar al Gani (DaG) 400), and the average lunar highlands crust. It has a relatively LREE‐enriched (7 to 10 x CI) pattern with a positive Eu anomaly (?11 x CI). Values of Fe/Mn ratios of olivine, pyroxene, and the bulk sample are essentially consistent with a lunar origin. SaU 300 also contains high siderophile abundances with a chondritic Ni/Ir ratio. SaU 300 has experienced moderate terrestrial weathering as its bulk Sr concentration is elevated compared to other lunar meteorites and Apollo and Luna samples. Mineral chemistry and trace element abundances of SaU 300 fall within the ranges of lunar feldspathic meteorites and FAN rocks. SaU 300 is a feldspathic impact‐melt breccia predominantly composed of feldspathic highlands rocks with a small amount of mafic component. With a bulk Mg# of 0.67, it is the most mafic of the feldspathic meteorites and represents a lunar surface composition distinct from any other known lunar meteorites. On the basis of its low Th concentration (0.46 ppm) and its lack of KREEPy and mare basaltic components, the source region of SaU 300 could have been within a highland terrain, a great distance from the Imbrium impact basin, probably on the far side of the Moon.  相似文献

Abstract— A composition approximating the lithology A groundmass of the Elephant Moraine (EET) 79001 martian basalt (Eg; McSween and Jarosewich, 1983) has been used to investigate the petrogenesis of the meteorite and the behavior of Cr and V at different oxygen fugacities. Crystallization experiments were carried out over a range of temperatures, and oxygen fugacities of either iron‐wüstite (IW) or IW + 2 (i.e., 1.5 log units below the quartz‐fayalite‐magnetite (QFM) buffer). Comparison of trace element concentrations (obtained by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) analysis) in experimental silicates with those of natural silicates supports the Fe‐Ti oxide‐derived oxygen fugacity of QFM ?1.8 ± 0.3 for this basalt (Herd et al., 2001). Experimental distribution coefficients, in conjunction with SIMS analyses of rims from the olivine and pyroxene xenocrysts in lithology A, as well as analyses of lithology A groundmass pigeonite cores, are used to calculate coexisting liquid concentrations of V and Cr. Liquid compositions derived from pigeonite xenocryst rims and groundmass pigeonite cores are similar, suggesting that the rims of orthopyroxene xenocrysts are overgrowths, which have not previously been accounted for when reconstructing the groundmass composition. This implies that the Eg composition requires modification. A similar exercise for the ferroan rims on olivine xenocrysts yields very different liquid compositions, indicating that these rims are not overgrowths but are part of the xenocryst assemblage. These results are shown to be consistent with the petrography of lithology A xenocrysts.  相似文献

The best estimate of indigenous lunar siderophiles comes from 29 pristine lunar rocks, characterized by low siderophile abundances, plutonic textures, and high age. Delano and Ringwood's blanket rejection of these rocks, on the contention that they are impact melts, is not justified by the petrologic evidence. Contrary to their claims, gold in highland breccias is largely meteoritic and is unaffected by fumarolic volcanism, as shown by its correlation with Ir and noncorrelation with fumarolic T1 (r=0.896 and 0.272). Delano and Ringwood's approach, involving subtraction of an H-chondrite meteoritic component from highland breccias, ignores the variation of Ir/Au ratios in modern and ancient meteorites, and hence leads to spurious excesses of Au, Ni, and volatiles, and in some cases to physically meaningless, negative residuals. Their excess volatiles in highland crust relative to mare basalts disappear when the highland composition is based on pristine lunar rocks rather than under-corrected breccias. Contrary to claims by Delano and Ringwood, the Ni/Co trend in Apollo 16 samples cannot be explained by an indigenous component rich in Ni (150–200 ppm) and Co (30–45ppm); mixing lines show that much lower Ni and Co contents are required (e.g., 7 ppm each).Chondrites and lunar highland breccias show essentially parallel fractionation trends for the siderophile-element ratios Re/Ir, Au/Ir, Ni/Ir, Ni/Pd, and Os/Ir. Because the chondritic ratios were established in the solar nebula, it appears that the lunar ratios also reflect nebular processes, and have not been modified by planetary processes.Properly derived abundances for the lunar highlands show large, systematic depletions relative to terrestrial oceanic tholeiites, by the following factors: Ge 270, Re 230, Sb170, Zn150, Au60, Tl 50, Ag 48, Ni 42, Se 12. It would seem that the resemblance to the Earth's mantle is not quite as striking as claimed by Delano and Ringwood.  相似文献

The Halo orbits originating in the vicinities of both,L 1 andL 2 grow larger, but shorter in period, as they shift towards the Moon. There is in each case a narrow band of stable orbits roughly half-way to the Moon. Nearer to the Moon, the orbits are fairly well-approximated by an almost rectilinear analysis. TheL 2 family shrinks in size as it approaches the Moon, becoming stable again shortly before penetrating the lunar surface. TheL 1-family becomes longer and thinner as it approaches the Moon, with a second narrow band of stable orbits with perilune, however, below the lunar surface.  相似文献

A theory of the libration of the Moon, completely analytical with respect to the harmonic coefficients of the lunar gravity field, was recently built (Moons, 1982). The Lie transforms method was used to reduce the Hamiltonian of the main problem of the libration of the Moon and to produce the usual libration series p1, p2 and . This main problem takes into account the perturbations due to the Sun and the Earth on the rotation of a rigid Moon about its center of mass. In complement to this theory, we have now computed the planetary effects on the libration, the planetary terms being added to the mean Hamiltonian of the main problem before a last elimination of the angles. For the main problem, as well as for the planetary perturbations, the motion of the center of mass of the Moon is described by the ELP 2000 solution (Chapront and Chapront-Touze, 1983).  相似文献
