The nonlinear propagation of the Alfvén and magnetosonic waves in the solar corona is investigated in terms of model equations. Due to viscous effects taken into account the propagation of the fast wave itself is governed by Burgers type equations possessing both expansion and compression shock solutions. Numerical simulations show that both parallely and perpendicularly propagating fast waves can steepen into shocks if their amplitudes are in excess of some sizeable fraction of the Alfvén velocity. However, if the magnetic field changes linearly in the perpendicular direction, then formation of perpendicular shocks can be hindered. The Alfvén waves exhibit a tendency to drive both the slow and fast magnetosonic waves whose propagation is described by linearized Boussinesq type equations with ponderomotive terms due to the Alfvén wave. The limits of the slow and fast waves are investigated.  相似文献

In high-speed solar wind, propagating Alfvén waves can be transferred into fast magnetosonic waves. When both the magnetic field strength and Alfvén wave velocity approach zero, fast magnetosonic waves will be transferred into ion-acoustic waves. As the phase velocity of ion-acoustic waves is slightly greater than the thermal velocity of protons, the turbulence energy of ion-acoustic waves can largely be absorbed by protons and can cause the mean temperature of protons to be greater than that of electrons by stochastic turbulence heating of ion-acoustic waves for protons.  相似文献

The nonlinear propagation of Alfvén waves on open solar magnetic flux tubes is considered. The flux tubes are taken to be vertical and axisymmetric, and they are initially untwisted. The Alfvén waves are time-dependent axisymmetric twists. Their propagation into the chromosphere and corona is investigated by solving numerically a set of nonlinear time-dependent equations, which couple the Alfvén waves into motions parallel to the initial magnetic field (motion in the third coordinate direction is artificially suppressed). The principal conclusions are: (1) Alfvén waves can steepen into fast shocks in the chromosphere. These shocks can pass through the transition region into the corona, and heat the corona. (2) As the fast shocks pass through the transition region, they produce large-velocity pulses in the direction transverse to B o. The pulses typically have amplitudes of 60 km s–1 or so and durations of a few tens of seconds. Such features may have been observed, suggesting that the corona is in fact heated by fast shocks. (3) Alfvén waves exhibit a strong tendency to drive upward flows, with many of the properties of spicules. Spicules, and the observed corrugated nature of the transition region, may therefore be by-products of magnetic heating of the corona. (4) It is qualitatively suggested that Alfvén waves may heat the upper chromosphere indirectly by exerting time-dependent forces on the plasma, rather than by directly depositing heat into the plasma.  相似文献

A two fluid stability analysis of an inhomogeneous solar wind plasma leads to prediction of possible instabilities of both Alfvénic and magnetoacoustic waves driven by local velocity gradients. The waves predicted to be possibly unstable have short wavelengths in comparison with the length scale of the gradients and, with different thresholds for the value of velocity shear, may have different directions of propagation with respect to the background magnetic field. We have performed a detailed study, based on Pioneer 6 magnetic and plasma data relative to several high speed streams in the solar wind, on the direction of propagation of the transverse waves which are found within the streams and on their association with velocity gradients within the stream structure. The analysis leads to the conclusion that the observed Alfvén waves may be consistent with the hypothesis of local generation through one of the above mentioned instabilities where velocity shear leads in fact to excitation of incompressible waves in directions almost parallel to the magnetic field.  相似文献

A source mechanism for the generation of shear Alfvén waves in the low solar corona is suggested. It is attributed to newly created ions associated with the ionization of neutral atoms in the chromosphere – corona transition region. In the present discussion attention is mainly paid to the excitation of shear Alfvén waves rather than compressional Alfvén waves, i.e., fast and slow magnetosonic waves. A kinetic instability, which amplifies Alfvén waves propagating in an arbitrary direction, due to the newborn ions, is studied. In the present analysis heavy ion species are emphasized.  相似文献

The nonlinear excitation of fast magnetosonic waves by phase mixing Alfvén waves in a cold plasma with a smooth inhomogeneity of density across a uniform magnetic field is considered. If initially fast waves are absent from the system, then nonlinearity leads to their excitation by transversal gradients in the Alfvén wave. The efficiency of the nonlinear Alfvén–fast magnetosonic wave coupling is strongly increased by the inhomogeneity of the medium. The fast waves, permanently generated by Alfvén wave phase mixing, are refracted from the region with transversal gradients of the Alfvén speed. This nonlinear process suggests a mechanism of indirect plasma heating by phase mixing through the excitation of obliquely propagating fast waves.  相似文献

The large differences in drift velocities between the solar wind protons and the picked-up ions of cometary origin cause the Alfvén waves (among others) to become unstable and generate turbulence. A self-consistent treatment of such instabilities has to take into account that these cometary ions affect the solar wind plasma in a decisive way. With the help of a previously developed formalism one finds the correct Alfvén instability criterion, which is here nondispersive, in contrast to recent calculations where the cometary ions are treated as a low-density, high-speed, and non-neutral beam through an otherwise undisturbed solar wind. The true bulk speed of the combined solar wind plus cometary ion plasma clearly shows the mass-loading and deceleration of the solar wind near the cometary nucleus, indicating a bow shock. The instability criterion is also used to determine the region upstream where the Alfvén waves can be unstable, based upon recent observations near comet Halley.  相似文献

This paper presents a two-dimensional, Alfvén-wave-driven solar wind model, in which the wave energy is assumed to cascade from the low-frequency Alfvén waves to high-frequency ion cyclotron waves and to be transferred to the solar wind protons by cyclotron resonance at the Kolmogorov rate. A typical structure in the meridional plane consisting of a coronal streamer near the Sun, a fast wind in high latitudes, and a slow wind across the heliospheric current sheet, is found. The fast wind obtained in the polar region is essentially similar to that derived by previous one-dimensional flow-tube models, and its density profile in the vicinity of the Sun roughly matches relevant observations. The proton conditions at 1 AU are also consistent with observations for both the fast and slow winds. The Alfvén waves appear in the fast- and slow-wind regions simultaneously and have comparable amplitudes, which agrees with Helios observations. The acceleration and heating of the solar wind by the Alfvén waves are found to occur mainly in the near-Sun region. It is demonstrated in terms of one-dimensional calculations that the distinct properties of the fast and slow winds are mainly attributed to different geometries of the flow tubes associated with the two sorts of winds. In addition, the 2-D and 1-D simulations give essentially the same results for both the fast and the slow winds.  相似文献

The equations of motion of all relevant parameters of Alfvén waves propagating from the sun outwardly into the expanding interplanetary medium are discussed for the case of a quiet, ideal, isotropic, one-fluid solar wind plasma. It is found that the frequency of the wave reamains constant, while the wave vector and the amplitudes depend, in general, on the evolution of the background medium and on the angle between the wave vector and the interplanetary magnetic field. This latter dependence cancels approximately for the evolution of the amplitudes in the case of a pure, overall spiral magnetic field. It is shown that in this case the results of earlier discussions can be derived by less decisive restrictions.  相似文献

It is shown that high-frequency dispersive kinetic Alfvén waves can cause significant electron heating in the solar corona. The heating is produced by collisionless electron Landau dissipation of the parallel electron current associated with high-frequency dispersive kinetic Alfvén waves, which have a parallel electric field.  相似文献

Large-amplitude Alfvén waves propagating along the guide magnetic field in a three-component plasma are shown to be spatially localized due to their nonlinear interaction with nonresonant electrostatic density fluctuations. A new class of subsonic Alfvén soliton solutions are found to exist in the three-component plasma. The Alfvén solitons can be relevant in explaining the properties of hydromagnetic turbulence near the comets.  相似文献

Nonlinear interaction of finite-amplitude Alfvén waves with non-resonant finite-frequency electrostatic and stationary electromagnetic perturbations is considered. This interaction is governed by a pair of coupled equations consisting of nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the Alfvén wave envelope and an equation for the plasma slow response that is driven by the ponderomotive force of the Alfvén wave packets. The modulational instability of a constant amplitude Alfvén pump is investigated and some new results for the growth rate of the instability are presented. It is found that a possible stationary state of the modulated Alfvén wave packets could lead to localized structures. The relevance of our investigation to the solar atmosphere is discussed.  相似文献

The importance of Alfvén wave generation in interacting plasmas is discussed in general and illustrated by the example of solar wind interaction with cometary plasma. The quasi-linear theory of Alfvén wave generation by cometary ions at distances far from the cometary nucleus is reviewed. The incorporation of a diabatic plasma compression effects into this theory modifies the spectrum of Alfvén waves and the integral intensity of magnetic field fluctuations previously published. These results are in quantitative agreement with thein situ observations near the comets Giacobini-Zinner and Halley. However, the polarization of quasi-linearly excited waves needs further detailed comparison with observations.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 80th birthday, 30 May 1988.  相似文献

The excitation and dissipation of global and surface Alfvén waves and their conversion into kinetic Alfvén waves have been analyzed for solar coronal loops using a cylindrical model of a magnetized plasma. Also the optimal conditions for coronal loop heating regimes with density of dissipated power 103 erg cm–3 s–1 by the new scheme named combined Alfvén wave resonance are found. Combined Alfvén wave heating regime appears when the global Alfvén wave is immersed into the Alfvén continuum with the condition of not-so-sharp distribution of axial current.Instituto de Matemática, Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói, RJ, Brazil  相似文献

A spectral analysis of coronal Faraday rotation (FR) data obtained with the linearly polarized signals of the two Heliosspacecraft reveals that about one-third of the temporal FR spectra contain a distinct spectral line superposed onto the background power-law spectrum. The most prevalent frequency of this quasi-harmonic component (QHC) is about 4 mHz, corresponding to a 4–5 min periodic oscillation of the coronal magnetic field. Physical reasons for the existence of QHC Alfvén fluctuations in the inner solar wind are discussed. FR fluctuations (FRF) are considered to arise from both a turbulent background as well as an isolated Alfvén wave train of finite extent and duration. An estimate can be made for the conditions under which the isolated wave train is observed above the ever present background. It is shown that the wave train must have a sufficiently long duration and transverse wavelength. It is suggested that the QHC at periods near 4–5 min in the FRF spectra are most probably produced by outward-propagating Alfvén waves excited initially in the anisotropic structures of the chromospheric network.  相似文献

The effect of large Larmor radius on the nonlinear behaviour of Alfvén waves propagating parallel to a uniform magnetic field in a compressible fluid is investigated with the aid of LLR-MHD equations. It is shown that asymptotic evolution of these waves is governed by the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The dispersion is provided by the large Larmor radius effect in the magnetic field equation. It is suggested that these calculations can have a bearing on the investigation of the structure of MHD waves in both laboratory and space plasmas, e.g., imploding pinches, laser-blow-off plasma experiment, recent barium releases in the magnetosphere, plasma flow near small planetary bodies such as comets and plasma dynamic near collisionless shock fronts.  相似文献

The properties of the resonator are considered for fast magnetoacoustic waves. It is shown that tunnel penetration of waves from the resonator leads either to heating of the medium in the Alfvén resonance vicinity (if the inclination angle of the magnetic field is smaller than the critical angle), or to excitation of Alfvén waves at the Alfvén resonance (if the inclination angle is larger than the critical angle). This suggests that non-radiative heating of the corona can be due to solar p-mode oscillations.  相似文献

Alfvén waves are generated easily in many cosmic plasmas, but they possess no linear damping mechanism since they are not compressive. The most prominent nonlinear damping occurs when one Alfvén wave decays into another plus a slow magnetosonic wave, or two Alfvén waves combine into one fast magnetosonic wave; the resulting magnetosonic waves can then be dissipated. The nonlinear coupling rates are presented, with special emphasis on the astrophysically important case of sound speed Alfvén speed. Streaming cosmic rays generate Alfvén waves moving in the direction of streaming, but they reabsorb the backward moving waves then produced by wave decay. The possible steady states for this system of cosmic rays and Alfvén waves turn out to be highly restricted.Supported by NSF grant GP-15218.  相似文献

The interaction of interstellar pick-up ions with the solar wind is studied by comparing a model for the velocity distribution function of pick-up ions with actual measurements of He+ ions in the solar wind. The model includes the effects of pitch-ang'e diffusion due to interplanetary Alfvén waves, adiabatic deceleration in the expanding solar wind and the radial variation of the source function. It is demonstrated that the scattering mean free path is in the range 0.1 AU and that energy diffusion can be neglected as compared with adiabatic deceleration. The effects of adiabatic focusing, of the radial variation of the neutral density and of a variation of the solar wind velocity with distance from the Sun are investigated. With the correct choice of these parameters we can model the measured energy spectra of the pick-up ions reasonably well. It is shown that the measured differential energy density of the pick-up ions does not vary with the solar wind velocity and the direction of the interplanetary magnetic field for a given local neutral gas density and ionization rate. Therefore, the comparison of the model distributions with the measurements leads to a quantitative determination of the local interstellar gas density.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 80th birthday, 30 May 1988.  相似文献

Hydromagnetic waves are of interest for heating the corona or coronal loops and for accelerating the solar wind. This paper enumerates some of the limitations that must be considered before hydromagnetic waves are taken seriously. In the lowest part of the corona, waves interact so that a significant fraction of the coronal wave flux should have periods as 10 s. If the problem of interest determines either a flux of wave energy or a dissipation rate, the distance that each wave mode can travel can be specified, and for at least one mode it must be consistent with the size and location of the region where the waves are to act. Heating of coronal loops observed by X-rays can be explained if the strength of the magnetic field along the loop lies within a rather narrow range and if the wave period is sufficiently short. In general, Alfvén waves travel furthest and reach high into the corona and into the solar wind. The radial variation of the magnetic field is the most important parameter determining where the waves are dissipated. Heating of coronal helmets by Alfvén waves is probable. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献
