A Poisson catch rate model for striped bass (Morone saxatilis) anglers in Chesapeake Bay was developed that incorporates the effect of bottom temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO). Angler catch rates are shown to be negatively affected by low DO. Predicted angler catch rates were then used in a random utility model of striped bass fishing location choice. Where anglers choose to fish is significantly related to expected catch rate and the travel cost and time from the anglers residence to the fishing location. Results from the random utility model were then used to simulate the economic welfare changes that result from changing DO levels in the Patuxent River. Since there are many substitute sites for fishing in the Patuxent River, the welfare effects are small. Increases in DO from current levels have a small effect on angler welfare, but if levels are allowed to deteriorate so they never exceed 5 mg l−1, the welfare effects are much larger. Under this latter scenario, the net present value of angler losses exceeds 100,000, and are almost100,000, and are almost 300,000 if the fishing grounds are anoxic. Losses are considerably higher as the area impacted by low oxygen conditions increases.  相似文献

The influences of temperature and environmental hypoxia on the growth rates of two California anadromous fishes, white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) and striped bass (Morone saxatilis) were examined. Fish (0.5–0.6 g initial weight) were fedad libitum rations ofArtemia in flow-through aquaria regulated for temperature (15, 20, and 25°C) and oxygen tension (130 and 90 torr Po 2). Growth of sturgeon was significantly greater at 20 °C compared with 15 °C, but there was no difference between 20 and 25 °C. Striped bass growth increased with each 5° increment of temeprature elevation to 3.2% body weight per d at 25 °C, the fastest growth rate measured. The temperature of maximum growth reflected the temperature of the native estuarine rearing area. Environmental hypoxia (90 torr Po 2) reduced growth of sturgeon within each temperature level, whereas striped bass growth was reduced by hypoxia only at the upper two temperatures. Sturgeon were much more active in the growth chambers than striped bass. Sturgeon activity increased with each 5 °C temperature increase under normoxia and hypoxia, except at 25 °C (hypoxia) where activity was insignificantly different from that at 20 °C (hypoxia).  相似文献

The relationships between egg production (spawning behavior), larval growth and survival, and environmental conditions that larvae encounter were investigated in the Patuxent River tributary of Chesapeake Bay in 1991. Striped, bass (Morone saxatilis) eggs and larvae occurred predominantly above the salt front where conductivity was ≤800 μmhos cm?1. There were three prominent peaks in egg production, each coinciding with increasing temperatures. Estimated growth rates of 6-d, otolith-aged cohorts, which ranged from 0.15 mm d?1 to 0.22 mm d?1 (mean=0.17 mm d?1), were not demonstrated to differ significantly from each other. Observed zooplankton densities and temperature did not significantly affect growth rates. Stage-specific cumulative mortalities of combined cohorts were calculated for eggs (Zstage=0.20=18.1%), yolk-sac larvae (Zstage=5.80=99.7%), and first-feeding larvae (Zstage=2.95=94.8%). The very high mortality of yolk-sac larvae suggests that dynamic during this stage may have had a major impact on subsquent recruitment. Cohort-specific mortality rates of larvae were variable, ranging from Z=0.045 d?1 to 0.719 d?1, and were strongly temperature-dependent. Cohorts that experiented average temperature <15°C or >20°C during the first 25 d after hatching had significantly higher mortality rates than those which experienced intermediate temperatures. Estimated hatch-date frequencies of larvae ≥8 mm SL indicated goo, very good, and very low potential recruitments for cohorst spawned during early-season (April 2–11), mid-season (April 12–24) and late-season (April 25–May 5), respectively. Because seasonal temperature trends and fluctuations are unpredictable, striped bass females cannot select a spawning time that guarantees their offspring will be exposed to optimum temperatures. Consequently, selection may have occured for spawning over a broad range of temperatures and dates, a behavior insuring that some larval cohorts will encounter favorable temperatures.  相似文献

We linked a 2-dimensional water quality model of the Patuxent River with a spatially-explicit model of fish growth to simulate how changes in land use in the Patuxent River Basin would affect the growth rate potential (GRP) of Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus). Simulations of three land-use patterns that reflected current nutrient loadings, increased nutrient loadings, and decreased nutrient loadings were used to drive the water quality model. Changes in nutrient loadings caused changes in the timing and intensity of phytoplankton concentrations and the region of hypoxia increased during summer with increased nutrient loading. The spatial distribution of menhaden GRP was highly correlated with phytoplankton concentrations and localized in the middle on third of the Patuxent River. Menhaden growth rate was highest in early June and late summer. During June, menhaden GRP (and phytoplankton concentration) was lowest at the lower nutrient loading simulation. During late summer, mean menhaden growth rates were inversely proportional to nutrient loading rates and menhaden grew best when nutrient loadings were the lowest. Upriver to mid-river phytoplankton patches drove overall mean calculations. Model results suggest that more research is needed on water quality model predictions of phytoplankton levels at a high level of spatial and temporal resolution, menhaden foraging, and menhaden habitat selection.  相似文献

Patterns of habitat utilization and migration of Hudson River striped bass,Morone saxatilis, were estimated using otolith microchemical analysis to chart age- and sex-dependent movements. Otoliths from 25 males and 25 females were analyzed for seasonal and age-specific patterns in strontium: calcium level. These levels were converted into salinity estimates based upon a relationship derived from experimental studies. Seasonal patterns in salinity habitation indicated annual up-estuary migrations in mature age-classes of males and females, and may represent spawning migrations. Early emigration of young striped bass (<3 yr old) into polyhaline and euhaline waters was observed for both sexes, but females tended to reside at higher salinities throughout their life span. Otolith microchemical analysis indicated that 68% of the sampled females and 28% of the sampled males spent significant portions of their lives in euhaline coastal waters. A positive relationship between down-estuary movements and age was observed for both sexes, supporting the hypothesis of size-related dispersion and anadromy in striped bass populations. Individuals collected during the same season or from the same segment of the river had similar lifetime salinities. This result suggests that group cohesion (schooling) could persist for substantial periods of an individual’s life span. The most cohesive group was fall-collected males, which may reside permanently in fresh water and estuarine waters. Cohesive migratory groups would have important implications for investigations on effects of contaminants and fishing pressure on Hudson River striped bass.  相似文献

The study area lies between 31.32°N, 31.70°E and 31.41°N, 31.78°E along Damietta branch, Nile River. It is about 24-km long. Acoustic classification (Quester Tangent Corporation—QTC) is used as a powerful tool to study seabed characteristics which is confirmed by the sediment analyses. Sediment characteristics of the study are presented by three acoustic classes: sand, mud and organic matter intercalated by clay. The depth varies from about ?12 m at Faraskour Bridge (southern part of the study area) to about ?2.5 m at Faraskour Dam (northern part of the study area). The average current velocity is detected as 4 cm/s and it has a very low effect on the transport of both sediment and waste debris. The sediment in the northern part characterized by organic matter reaches about 70 cm thickness under and around fish cages. This huge amount of organic matter deposit leads to the reduction of the dissolved oxygen and increase pH values. This study shows that the water quality in the northern part of the study area is at risk (drinking water for Damietta city) due to the presence of the huge amount of waste debris intercalated by organic matter. The rises of temperature in summer enhance oxygen consumption and the decomposition of the organic matter. This is rapidly increasing the growth of bacteria and phytoplankton, causing turbidity and algal blooms. Those affect the water quality and raise the water toxicity (drinking water).  相似文献

Habitat selection capabilities of the recruiting larval stages of marine invertebrates are limited, in part, by their ability to maneuver in flowing water. Distributional and experimental evidence suggest that blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) megalopae may preferentially settle into vegetated habitats. However, the behavior and swimming capabilities of megalopae in flowing water have not previously been investigated. Laboratory experiments were conducted in a small, recirculating seawater flume to determine the swimming response of megalopae to varying flow velocities. Nighttime trials were conducted at six flow velocities: 0, 1.9, 3.6, 4.8, 6.3, and 9.3 cm s?1. Behavior and swimming velocities of field-collected C. sapidus megalopae were video recorded. Megalopae exhibited negative phototaxis and were found in the water column at all flows in the dark. The maximum sustained swimming speed observed was 12.6 cm s?1 and the mean swimming speed in still water was 5.0 cm s?1, with short bursts in excess of 20 cm s?1. Megalopae frequently oriented into the current and were capable of swimming upstream against the current at flow speeds <4.8 cm s?1; at greater velocities they were not able to do so. The results suggest that at low to moderate current velocities C. sapidus megalopae have the ability to actively move in search of settlement sites and to maintain their positions in desirable sites rather than relying strictly on passive movements by currents.  相似文献

This study considered the rate at which striped bass larvae disintegrate following death as well as the ability of experienced taxonomists to distinguish larvae which were liver or dead on collection from preserved samples. The rate of disintegration was dependent on age (size) of the larvae with pro-larvae being unrecognizable in 8 to 16 h following death (17 to 19°C). Post-larvae decomposed somewhat more slowly, but were unrecognizable as to species after 16 h. Experienced taxonomists were unable to distinguish pro- and post-larvae which had been live or dead prior to preservation. However, the viability of metamorphosed larvae could readily be distinguished.  相似文献

Oxygen profiles were measured in the sediments of the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea), an oligotrophic marine system affected by episodic seasonal flash floods and intense aeolian dry deposition. Sediment cores were retrieved from shallow (15–45 m), intermediate (250–561 m) and deep (700 m) water sites of south–north and east–west transects. Dissolved oxygen concentrations were measured simultaneously by using microelectrodes and microoptodes immediately after sampling and after transportation. Oxygen penetration depths were found to increase from 2 to 5 mm at the shallow water sites with sandy permeable sediments to 10–21 mm at the deeper sites with cohesive muddy sediments. This increase corresponds to decrease in oxygen diffusive fluxes at the sediment–water interface and oxygen consumption rates with depth. Oxygen consumption rates exhibit local maxima at the oxic–anoxic sediment boundary, which may be attributed to oxygen reduction coupled to oxidation of dissolved Fe(II) and Mn(II) at deep and intermediate water sites and of hydrogen sulfide at shallow water sites. Microelectrodes and microoptodes measurements of cohesive sediments from deep and intermediate water sites yielded similar results. By comparison, the microoptodes displayed more robust measurements than microelectrodes in sandy near-shore sediments. This was attributed to their flexible fiber structure that is less likely to break or to abruptly displace sand particles. After transportation of sediment cores from Eilat to Beer Sheva followed by ≤?24-h storage, no changes in oxygen fluxes and consumption rates were detected.  相似文献

This work presents new experimental results on the kinetics of mineral dissolution in near-critical and supercritical water in a temperature range (T) from 25 to 400℃ and a constant pressure of 23 MPa. Kinetic experiments were carried out by using a flow reactor (packed bed reactor) of an open system. The dissolution rates of albite and magnetite were measured under these experimental conditions. Na, Al and Si release rates for albite dissolution in water were measured as a function of the temperature and flow velocity in the reaction system. The maximum release rates of Na, AI and Si of albite dissolution in the hydrothermal flow systems under different flow velocities were always obtained at 300℃, that is to say, the maximum albite dissolution rates in the flow systems, regardless of different flow rates, were repeatedly measured at 300℃. Results indicate a wide fluctuation in albite dissolution rates occurring close to the critical point of water. The dissolution rates increased when the temperatu  相似文献

Day of hatch tidewater silversides, Menidia peninsulae, were stocked at 5 fish per liter in 3 1 of seawater at 30‰ and raised for 16 days at 20°, 25° and 30 °C. Food organisms (Brachionus sp. or Artemia nauplii) were maintained at 500, 1,000, 5,000 or 10,000 organisms per 1. The influence of food density on growth of larval M. peninsulae was temperature dependent. At 20 °C, there was no difference in final size of fish based on food densities. But at 25° and 30 °C there was an increase in final body size as food density increased. There were no significant differences in survival among food densities in tests at 20°, 25° or 30 °C. However, for any given temperature and food density, the number of survivors in a replicate affected the final size attained. Optimal culture condition for larval M. peninsulae, considering both survival and growth was determined to be 5,000 food organisms per 1 at 25 °C.  相似文献

Rapid warming in mid-latitude central Asia for the past 100 years   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Surface air temperature variations during the last 100 years (1901–2003) in mid-latitude central Asia were analyzed using Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOFs). The results suggest that temperature variations in four major sub-regions, i.e. the eastern monsoonal area, central Asia, the Mongolian Plateau and the Tarim Basin, respectively, are coherent and characterized by a striking warming trend during the last 100 years. The annual mean temperature increasing rates at each sub-region (representative station) are 0.19°C per decade, 0.16°C per decade, 0.23°C per decade and 0.15°C per decade, respectively. The average annual mean temperature increasing rate of the four sub-regions is 0.18°C per decade, with a greater increasing rate in winter (0.21°C per decade). In Asian mid-latitude areas, surface air temperature increased relatively slowly from the 1900s to 1970s, and it has increased rapidly since 1970s. This pattern of temperature variation differs from that in the other areas of China. Notably, there was no obvious warming between the 1920s and 1940s, with temperature fluctuating between warming and cooling trends (e.g. 1920s, 1940s, 1960s, 1980s, 1990s). However, the warming trends are of a greater magnitude and their durations are longer than that of the cooling periods, which leads to an overall warming. The amplitude of temperature variations in the study region is also larger than that in eastern China during different periods.  相似文献

The amethyst-bearing geodes found in the flood basalts of the Arapey formation at Artigas (Uruguay) were formed as protogeodes by bubbles of CO2-rich basalt-derived fluids. The formation of the celadonite rim and the lining of the geodes by agate followed by quartz and amethyst were driven by the artesian water of the Guaraní aquifer percolating the basalts from below. The temperature of the amethyst formation is estimated from fluid inclusion data to be between 50° and 120°C. Oxygen stable isotope data suggest a crystallization temperature of calcite of about only 24°C. The actual wellhead temperature of the water produced from the Guaraní aquifer in the study area is around 29°C.  相似文献

This study reports the kinetic experimental results of albite in water and in KCI solution at 22 MPa in the temperature range of 25 to 400℃. Kinetic experiments have been carried out in an open flow-through reaction system (packed bed reactor). Albite dissolution is always incongruent in water at most temperatures, but becomes congruent at 300℃ (close to the critical point 374℃). At temperatures from 25 to 300℃, the incongruent dissolution of albite is reflected by the fact that sodium and aluminum are easily dissolved into water; from 300 to 400℃ it is reflected by silicon being more easily dissolved in water than Al and Na. Maximum albite dissolution rates in the flow hydrothermal systems have been repeatedly observed at 300℃, independent of flow rates. The kinetic experiments of albite dissolution in a KCl aqueous solution (0.1 mol KCl) indicate that the dissolution rate of albite increases with increasing temperature. Maximum silicon release rates of albite have been observed at 400℃, while ma  相似文献

The rate of mineral transformations in rocks near magmatic intrusions may be estimated using mathematical modeling for study of the duration of metamorphism and geological and mineralogical data. At the contacts of the Anakit trappean massif on the Nizhnyaya Tunguska River, where the temperature reached 900°C, the rate of growth of a wollastonite rim at the boundary between the limestone and the siliceous nodule was ~3 × 10–10 cm/s. The zone of “spotted” hornfels with a width of 300?400 m was formed during metamorphism of chlorite–sericite–epidote–albite–quartz schist near the Kharlov gabbro massif in the foothills of the Altai Mountains. The movement rate of the metamorphic front during the formation of rock may be estimated as ~2 × 10–8 cm/s. It is suggested that the rate of metamorphism is controlled by the temperature and rock composition. As a whole, the rates of metamorphism of rocks near magmatic intrusive bodies exceed the rates of regional metamorphism. Upon accumulation of the actual data, this may be applied for diagnostics of the types of metamorphism.  相似文献

Oxygen isotope exchange experiments at 22°C have been made on a series of illites displaying a range of perfection of crystallinity and degree of interstratification. Structurally bound oxygen underwent significant non-equilibrium exchange in time periods ranging from 2 to 70 months. Exchange was found to be controlled by accessibility of water to the interlayer cation region.1000 In α appears to be in the general neighborhood of +23.4 at 22°C for the illite-water system; however, it was found that equilibrium fractionation cannot be represented by a single value for structurally and chemically distinct illites.  相似文献

Sixty low-magnesium-calcite samples from Cenomanian articulate brachiopods, belemnites and oysters from the epicontinental shelf sea of Europe were geochemically and microscopically studied in order to evaluate their preservation and potential as carriers of palaeoenvironmental information. The sampled localities in northern Spain, Germany and southern England cover the transition between subtropical (25-30°N) and temperate (33-38°N) climates. Mean Cenomanian salinity-adjusted palaeotemperatures of diagenetically unaltered terebratulid and rhynchonellid brachiopods are 25.5ǃ.3 °C in Spain and 19.4ǃ.9 °C in southern England. The resulting low-to-mid-latitude meridional temperature gradient of ~0.7 °C per degree latitude is similar to the gradient today and suggests modern heat transport values for Cenomanian low latitudes. Oxygen isotopic composition of unaltered specimens of the Upper Cenomanian belemnite Praeactinocamax plenus (mean: 0.2‰) is enriched in 18O by 1‰ in comparison to brachiopod shells. Correspondingly, Upper Cenomanian palaeotemperatures derived from belemnite calcite (~13.0ǃ.3 °C) underestimate modelled mid-latitude sea surface temperatures by ~6 °C. Since P. plenus occurs as Boreal pulse fauna during a short interval in the Late Cenomanian, its heavy oxygen isotopic composition can be attributed either to migration from a cooler and/or deeper water mass or to unknown vital effects.  相似文献

The study of water chemistry and sediment core samples from Udaisagar lake in Rajasthan has revealed high phosphate contents; 186 and 236 μg/l in surface and sub-surface waters and in core samples 0.157 wt % P2O5, low D.O. 4.61 and 3.50 mg/l on average in surface and depth waters and high E.C. 1316 and 1395 μs/cm and higher sedimentation rate 8.90 mm/year in this lake compared to other lakes in the vicinity. The enormous and wide-spread growth of algal bloom in lake water and Ahar river and occasional fish mortality are indications of eutrophic conditions prevailing in the lake. Such a situation is developing due to the discharge of pollutants from phosphorite mines, chemical factories, distillary, sewage and domestic waste from settlements, hotels throughout the length of River Ahar which during its journey receives and finally discharges pollution in this lake. This renders the water unhygenic for human consumption and deleterious to aquatic life. Received: 27 January 1998 · Accepted: 28 September 1998  相似文献

Grain boundary diffusion rates of oxygen, potassium and calcium in fine-grained feldspar aggregates were determined experimentally. The starting materials were a natural albite rock from the Tanco pegmatite and aggregates hot-pressed from fragments of Amelia albite or Ab, Or and An composition glasses. The technique employed isotopic tracers (18O, 41K, 42Ca) either evaporated onto the surface or in an aqueous solution surrounding the sample, and depth profiling using an ion microprobe (SIMS). From the depth profiles, the product of the grain boundary diffusion coefficient (D′) and effective boundary width (δ) was calculated using numerical solutions to the appropriate diffusion equation. The experimental reproducibility of D′δ is a factor of 3. A separate determination of D′ independent of δ yields an effective grain boundary width of ∼3 nm, consistent with high resolution TEM observations of a physical grain boundary width <5 nm. Oxygen (as molecular water) grain boundary diffusion rates were determined in the Ab and Or aggregates at 450°–800° C and 100 MPa (hydrothermal), potassium rates in Or aggregates at 450°–700° C both at 0.1 MPa (in air) and at 100 MPa (hydrothermal), and calcium rates in An aggregates at 700°–1100° C and 0.1 MPa (in air). Oxygen grain boundary diffusion rates are similar in all three of the Ab aggregates and in the Or aggregate. Potassium and oxygen depth profiles measured in the same samples yield different D′δ values, confirming a diffusional transport mechanism. Potassium diffusion in the Or aggregate has a greater activation energy (216 vs 78 kJ/mol) than oxygen, and the Arrhenius relations cross at ∼625° C. Potassium D′δ values in Or aggregates are about a factor of five greater in hydrothermal experiments at 100 MPa than in experiments at 0.1 MPa in air. Calcium grain boundary diffusion rates in An aggregates are 4 to 5 orders of magnitude slower than potassium in Or and have a greater (291 kJ/mol) activation energy. This suggests that differences in formal charge and/or size of diffusing species may play an important role in their relative grain boundary diffusion rates.
