A numerical code is presented for computing the stationary state of resonant absorption of MHD waves in cylindrical flux tubes in linear, compressible, and viscous MHD. The full viscosity stress tensor is included in the code with the five viscosity coefficients as given by Braginskii (1965). Also non-zero plasma pressure effects are taken into account, and the finite elements discretization with the Galerkin method has been used. The implementation of the stress tensor and the numerical accuracy of the tensorial viscous MHD code are scrutinized in test case. The test case involves the absorption of waves in cylindrical flux tubes considered by Lou (1990) and Goossens and Poedts (1992) in the context of absorption of acoustic oscillations. The results for the absorption rates obtained with the tensorial viscous code agree completely with the results obtained by Lou in a scalar viscous MHD and by Goossens and Poedts in resistive MHD. This verifies not only the complicated tensor viscous code but again proves that the absorption rate is independent of the actual dissipation mechanism.  相似文献

Evolution of the gravitational contraction phase of stars having masses 0.3 < M/M⊙ < 1.5 were studied along with deuterium burning. The equation of state developed by Mihalas et al. (1988) and OPAL opacity tables were used in our investigation. The theoretical time lines were compared with observations. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Frequencies of intermediate-degree f modes of the Sun seem to indicate that the solar radius is smaller than what is normally used in constructing solar models. We investigate the possible consequences of an error in radius on results for solar structure obtained using helioseismic inversions. It is shown that solar sound speed will be overestimated if oscillation frequencies are inverted using reference models with a larger radius. Using solar models with a radius of 695.78 Mm and new data sets, the base of the solar convection zone is estimated to be at a radial distance of 0.7135 ± 0.0005 of the solar radius. The helium abundance in the convection zone as determined using models with an OPAL equation of state is 0.248 ± 0.001, where the errors reflect the estimated systematic errors in the calculation, the statistical errors being much smaller. Assuming that the OPAL opacities used in the construction of the solar models are correct, the surface Z / X is estimated to be 0.0245 ± 0.0006.  相似文献

The generalized jump relations across the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shock front in non-ideal gas are derived considering the equation of state for non-ideal gas as given by Landau and Lifshitz. The jump relations for pressure, density, and particle velocity have been derived, respectively in terms of a compression ratio. Further, the simplified forms of the MHD shock jump relations have been obtained in terms of non-idealness parameter, simultaneously for the two cases viz., (i) when the shock is weak and, (ii) when it is strong. Finally, the cases of strong and weak shocks are explored under two distinct conditions viz., (i) when the applied magnetic field is strong and, (ii) when the field is weak. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of how shock waves behave in magnetized environment of non-ideal gases.  相似文献

The present paper discusses the implementation of the SGHR method (Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg, 1991; Goossens, Ruderman, and Hollweg, 1995) in a numerical scheme for determining resonantly driven Alfvén waves in nonuniform magnetic flux tubes. This method is based on jump conditions over the dissipative layer which are obtained from an asymptotic analysis of analytical solutions to simplified versions of the linear non-ideal MHD equations in this dissipative layer. The emphasis is on the computational simplicity and the accuracy of the method. The method derives its computational simplicity from the fact that it circumvents the numerical integration of the non-ideal MHD equations. The implementation only requires the numerical integration of the ideal MHD equations away from the resonant position. There is no need for a special integration scheme and a PC suffices as a hardware tool. The accuracy of the method is verified by means of test computations. These test computations deal with the loss of power of acoustic waves in sunspots by resonant absorption of Alfvén waves. Results for the absorption coefficients obtained with the SGHR method are compared with known results in the literature obtained by integration of the full set of the linearized non-ideal MHD equations. The agreement is excellent and identifies the SGHR method as a powerful and extremely easy to use tool for studying resonant Alfvén waves.  相似文献

We derive the dispersion equation for gravito-magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) waves in an isothermal, gravitationally stratified plasma with a horizontal inhomogeneous magnetic field. Sound and Alfvén speeds are constant. Under these conditions, it is possible to derive analytically the equations for gravito-MHD waves. The high values of the viscous and magnetic Reynolds numbers in the solar atmosphere imply that the dissipative terms in the MHD equations are negligible, except in layers around the positions where the frequency of the MHD wave equals the local Alfvén or slow wave frequency. Outside these layers the MHD waves are accurately described by the equations of ideal MHD. We consider waves that propagate energy upward in the atmosphere. For the plane boundary, z=0, between two isothermal plasma regions with horizontal but different magnetic fields, we discuss the boundary conditions and derive the equations for the reflection and transmission coefficients. In the simpler case of a gravitationally stratified plasma without magnetic field, these coefficients describe the reflection and transmission properties of gravito-acoustic waves.  相似文献

In broad astrophysical contexts of large-scale gravitational collapses and outflows and as a basis for various further astrophysical applications, we formulate and investigate a theoretical problem of self-similar magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) for a non-rotating polytropic gas of quasi-spherical symmetry permeated by a completely random magnetic field. Within this framework, we derive two coupled nonlinear MHD ordinary differential equations (ODEs), examine properties of the magnetosonic critical curve, obtain various asymptotic and global semi-complete similarity MHD solutions, and qualify the applicability of our results. Unique to a magnetized gas cloud, a novel asymptotic MHD solution for a collapsing core is established. Physically, the similarity MHD inflow towards the central dense core proceeds in characteristic manners before the gas material eventually encounters a strong radiating MHD shock upon impact onto the central compact object. Sufficiently far away from the central core region enshrouded by such an MHD shock, we derive regular asymptotic behaviours. We study asymptotic solution behaviours in the vicinity of the magnetosonic critical curve and determine smooth MHD eigensolutions across this curve. Numerically, we construct global semi-complete similarity MHD solutions that cross the magnetosonic critical curve zero, one, and two times. For comparison, counterpart solutions in the case of an isothermal unmagnetized and magnetized gas flows are demonstrated in the present MHD framework at nearly isothermal and weakly magnetized conditions. For a polytropic index γ=1.25 or a strong magnetic field, different solution behaviours emerge. With a strong magnetic field, there exist semi-complete similarity solutions crossing the magnetosonic critical curve only once, and the MHD counterpart of expansion-wave collapse solution disappears. Also in the polytropic case of γ=1.25, we no longer observe the trend in the speed-density phase diagram of finding infinitely many matches to establish global MHD solutions that cross the magnetosonic critical curve twice.   相似文献

A multiple scales analysis is used to derive a mixed Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries (BKdV) equation in the long wavelength regime for a two-fluid MHD model used to describe cosmic-ray acceleration by the first-order Fermi process in astrophysical shocks. The BKdV equation describes the time evolution of weak shocks in the theory of diffusive shock acceleration for all possible cosmic-ray pressures. Previous work on weak shocks in the cosmic-ray MHD model has assumed that dissipation alone is sufficient to balance nonlinearity, but, as cosmic-ray pressures become small, the weak shock becomes discontinous. By including Hall current effects into the MHD model, the low cosmic-ray pressure limit leads smoothly into solitary wave behaviour. For low cosmic-ray pressures, the shock has a downstream oscillatory precursor which is smoothed into the standard Taylor shock profile with increasing cosmic-ray pressure. As a by-product of the perturbation analysis, a dissipative KdV equation is derived. In conclusion, dispersive effects on Alfvén waves are discussed and a modulational stability analysis is presented.  相似文献

An attempt at understanding downward overshooting in the convective envelopes of post-main-sequence stars has been made on the basis of three-dimensional large-eddy simulations, using artificially modified OPAL opacity and taking into account radiation and ionization in the equation of state. Two types of star, an intermediate-mass star and a massive star, were considered. To avoid a long thermal relaxation time of the intermediate-mass star, we increased the stellar energy flux artificially while trying to maintain a structure close to the one given by a 1D stellar model. A parametric study of the flux factor was performed. For the massive star, no such process was necessary. Numerical results were analysed when the system reached the statistical steady state. It was shown that the penetration distance in pressure scaleheights is of the order of unity. The scaling relations between penetration distance, input flux and vertical velocity fluctuations studied by Singh et al. were checked. The anisotropy of the turbulent convection and the diffusion models of the third-order moments representing the non-local transport were also investigated. These models are dramatically affected by the velocity fields and no universal constant parameters seem to exist. The limitations of the numerical results were also discussed.  相似文献

We construct analytically stationary global configurations for both aligned and logarithmic spiral coplanar magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) perturbations in an axisymmetric background MHD disc with a power-law surface mass density  Σ0∝ r −α  , a coplanar azimuthal magnetic field   B 0∝ r −γ  , a consistent self-gravity and a power-law rotation curve   v 0∝ r −β  , where v 0 is the linear azimuthal gas rotation speed. The barotropic equation of state  Π∝Σ n   is adopted for both MHD background equilibrium and coplanar MHD perturbations where Π is the vertically integrated pressure and n is the barotropic index. For a scale-free background MHD equilibrium, a relation exists among  α, β, γ  and n such that only one parameter (e.g. β) is independent. For a linear axisymmetric stability analysis, we provide global criteria in various parameter regimes. For non-axisymmetric aligned and logarithmic spiral cases, two branches of perturbation modes (i.e. fast and slow MHD density waves) can be derived once β is specified. To complement the magnetized singular isothermal disc analysis of Lou, we extend the analysis to a wider range of  −1/4 < β < 1/2  . As an illustrative example, we discuss specifically the  β= 1/4  case when the background magnetic field is force-free. Angular momentum conservation for coplanar MHD perturbations and other relevant aspects of our approach are discussed.  相似文献

We describe a numerical algorithm based on Godunov methods for integrating the equations of compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in multidimensions. It combines a simple, dimensionally-unsplit integration method with the constrained transport (CT) discretization of the induction equation to enforce the divergence-free constraint. We present the results of a series of fully three-dimensional tests which indicate the method is second-order accurate for smooth solutions in all MHD wave families, and captures shocks, contact and rotational discontinuities well. However, it is also more diffusive than other more complex unsplit integrators combined with CT. Thus, the primary advantage of the method is its simplicity. It does not require a characteristic tracing step to construct interface values for the Riemann solver, it is straightforward to extend with additional physics, and it is suitable for use with nested and adaptive meshes. The method is implemented as one of two dimensionally unsplit MHD integrators in the Athena code, which is freely available for download from the web.  相似文献

The propagation of linear and non-linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in a straight homogeneous cylindrical magnetic flux tube embedded in a homogeneous magnetic environment is investigated. Both the tube and its environment are in steady state. Steady flows break the symmetry of forward (field-aligned) and backward (anti-parallel to magnetic field) propagating MHD wave modes because of the induced Doppler shifts. It is shown that strong enough flows change the sense of propagation of MHD waves. The flow also induces shifts in cut-off values and phase-speeds of the waves. Under photospheric conditions, if the flow is strong enough, the slow surface modes may disappear and the fast body modes may become present. The crossing of modes is also observed due to the presence of flows. The effect of steady-state background has to be considered particularly carefully when evaluating observation signatures of MHD waves for diagnostics in the solar atmosphere.  相似文献

We study the self-similar magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) of a quasi-spherical expanding void (viz. cavity or bubble) surrounding the centre of a self-gravitating gas sphere with a general polytropic equation of state. We show various analytic asymptotic solutions near the void boundary in different parameter regimes and obtain the corresponding void solutions by extensive numerical explorations. We find novel void solutions of zero density on the void boundary. These new void solutions exist only in a general polytropic gas and feature shell-type density profiles. These void solutions, if not encountering the magnetosonic critical curve (MCC), generally approach the asymptotic expansion solution far from the central void with a velocity proportional to radial distance. We identify and examine free-expansion solutions, Einstein–de Sitter expansion solutions, and thermal-expansion solutions in three different parameter regimes. Under certain conditions, void solutions may cross the MCC either smoothly or by MHD shocks, and then merge into asymptotic solutions with finite velocity and density far from the centre. Our general polytropic MHD void solutions provide physical insight for void evolution, and may have astrophysical applications such as massive star collapses and explosions, shell-type supernova remnants and hot bubbles in the interstellar and intergalactic media, and planetary nebulae.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is to present new extensions of the space – time conservation element and solution element (CESE) method for simulations of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) problems in general curvilinear coordinates by using an adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) grid system. By transforming the governing MHD equations from the physical space (x,y,z) to the computational space (ξ,η,ζ) while retaining the form of conservation, the CESE method is established for MHD in the curvilinear coordinates. Utilizing the parallel AMR package PARAMESH, we present the first implementation of applying the AMR CESE method for MHD (AMR-CESE-MHD) in both Cartesian and curvilinear coordinates. To show the validity and capabilities of the AMR-CESE-MHD code, a suite of numerical tests in two and three dimensions including ideal MHD and resistive MHD are carried out, with two of them in both Cartesian and curvilinear coordinates. Numerical tests show that our results are highly consistent with those obtained previously by other authors, and the results under both coordinate systems confirm each other very well.  相似文献

We study how axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) accretion flows depend on γ adiabatic index in the polytropic equation of state. This work is an extension of Mościbrodzka & Proga, where we investigated the γ dependence of two-dimensional Bondi-like accretion flows in the hydrodynamical (HD) limit. Our main goal is to study if simulations for various γ can give us insights into the problem of various modes of accretion observed in several types of accretion systems, such as black hole binaries (BHBs), active galactic nuclei (AGN) and gamma-ray bursts. We find that for  γ≳ 4/3  , the fast-rotating flow forms a thick torus that is supported by rotation and gas pressure. As shown before for  γ= 5/3  , such a torus produces a strong, persistent bipolar outflow that can significantly reduce the polar funnel accretion of a slowly rotating flow. For low γ, close to 1, the torus is thin and is supported by rotation. The thin torus produces an unsteady outflow which is too weak to propagate throughout the polar funnel inflow. Compared to their HD counterparts, the MHD simulations show that the magnetized torus can produce an outflow and does not exhibit regular oscillations. Generally, our simulations demonstrate how the torus thickness affects the outflow production. They also support the notion that the geometrical thickness of the torus correlates with the power of the torus outflow. Our results, applied to observations, suggest that the torus ability to radiatively cool and become thin can correspond to a suppression of a jet as observed in the BHBs during a transition from a hard/low to soft/high spectral state and a transition from a quiescent to hard/low state in AGN.  相似文献

In the framework of Darmois-Israel formalism, the general equations describing the motion of thin shell wormhole with a general form of equation of state of a polytropic gas are derived. The mechanical stability analysis of thin shell wormhole with charge in Reissner–Nordstrom (RN) to linearized spherically symmetric perturbation about static equilibrium solution is carried out.  相似文献

Various radio observations have shown that the hot atmospheres of galaxy clusters are magnetized. However, our understanding of the origin of these magnetic fields, their implications on structure formation and their interplay with the dynamics of the cluster atmosphere, especially in the centres of galaxy clusters, is still very limited. In preparation for the upcoming new generation of radio telescopes (like Expanded Very Large Array, Low Wavelength Array, Low Frequency Array and Square Kilometer Array), a huge effort is being made to learn more about cosmological magnetic fields from the observational perspective. Here we present the implementation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in the cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) code gadget . We discuss the details of the implementation and various schemes to suppress numerical instabilities as well as regularization schemes, in the context of cosmological simulations. The performance of the SPH–MHD code is demonstrated in various one- and two-dimensional test problems, which we performed with a fully, three-dimensional set-up to test the code under realistic circumstances. Comparing solutions obtained using athena , we find excellent agreement with our SPH–MHD implementation. Finally, we apply our SPH–MHD implementation to galaxy cluster formation within a large, cosmological box. Performing a resolution study we demonstrate the robustness of the predicted shape of the magnetic field profiles in galaxy clusters, which is in good agreement with previous studies.  相似文献

We describe a Godunov-type magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code based on the Miyoshi and Kusano (2005) solver which can be used to solve various astrophysical hydrodynamic and MHD problems. The energy equation is in the form of entropy conservation. The code has been implemented on several different coordinate systems: 2.5D axisymmetric cylindrical coordinates, 2D Cartesian coordinates, 2D plane polar coordinates, and fully 3D cylindrical coordinates. Viscosity and diffusivity are implemented in the code to control the accretion rate in the disk and the rate of penetration of the disk matter through the magnetic field lines. The code has been utilized for the numerical investigations of a number of different astrophysical problems, several examples of which are shown.  相似文献
