In this contribution we examine the problem of inferring ages and initial cluster masses from synthesis models at the limit of low-mass clusters (M≤ a few ×104 M). We show that it is not possible to apply directly synthesis models using standard methods to such clusters, since the basic hypothesis implicit in the models (a fixed proportionality between the number of stars in different evolutionary phases) is not fulfilled due to an insufficient number of stars for a reliable sampling of the stellar initial mass function. The consequence of this incomplete sampling is a non-Gaussian distribution of the mass–luminosity relation for clusters that share the same evolutionary conditions (age, metallicity and stellar initial mass distribution function). We review some tests, that can be performed before the start of the analysis, to estimate if the observed cluster can be analyzed with synthesis models following traditional procedures (like χ 2 minimization) or if it is necessary make use of synthesis models in a probabilistic framework. Finally, we show the implications of these results for estimating the low-mass tail in the initial cluster mass distribution function.  相似文献

In this paper we briefly discuss the effect of complete homogenization in the intermediate unstable layers of massive stars on the effective temperature of the core He-burning models. To this end, a 20M star of Population I chemical composition (X=0.700,Z=0.020) has been allowed to evolve from the Main Sequence into the core He-exhaustion stage without taking into account semiconvective mixing. The results show that the models are systematically bluer than those computed with the same physical parameters but with the inclusion of semiconvection.  相似文献

The evolutionary behaviour of rotating low-mass stars in the mass range 0.2 and 0.9M has been investigated during the pre-Main-Sequence phase. The angular momentum is conserved locally in radiative regions and totally in convective regions, according to a predetermined angular velocity distribution depending on the structure of the star. As the stars contract toward the zero-age Main Sequence, they spin up under the assumption that the angular momentum is conserved during the evolution of the stars. When the stars have differential rotations, their inner regions rotate faster than the outer regions. The effective temperatures and luminosities of rotating low-mass stars are obtained lower than those of non-rotating stars. They have lower central temperature and density values compared to those of non-rotating stars.  相似文献

Understanding transport processes inside stars is one of the main goals of asteroseismology. Chemical turbulent mixing can affect the internal distribution of μ near the energy generating core, having an effect on the evolutionary tracks similar to that of overshooting. This mixing leads to a smoother chemical composition profile near the edge of the convective core, which is reflected in the behavior of the buoyancy frequency and, therefore, in the frequencies of gravity modes. We describe the effects of convective overshooting and turbulent mixing on the frequencies of gravity modes in B‐type main sequence stars. In particular, the cases of p‐g mixed modes in β Cep stars and high‐order modes in SPBs are considered. (© 2008 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The evolutionary track of low-mass red giant stars (0.7–0.9M ) is computed with the aim to demonstrate the conditions under which low-mass white dwarfs (WDs) can form through the evolution of single stars. Also, the influence of the mixing length to the scale height ratio on the radius of the star is calculated and the coupling between the mixing-length and the mass-loss rate parameters is investigated. Our conclusions are that the uncertainties in mass-loss and mixing-length to scale-height ratio leave enough parameter space to allow the formation of low-mass WD via single star evolution. We also conclude that the gap between proto-WD stars without any nebula and stars with well-defined nebulae is bridged by stars which have a dilute gas cloud around them which cannot be observed as a nebula.  相似文献

Long-term homogeneous photometry for 35 classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) in the Taurus–Auriga star-forming region has been analyzed. Reliable effective temperatures, interstellar extinctions, luminosities, radii, masses, and ages have been determined for the CTTS. The physical parameters and evolutionary status of 35 CTTS from this work and 34 weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTS) from previous studies have been compared. The luminosities, radii, and rotation periods of low-mass (0.3–1.1 M ) CTTS are shown to be, on average, greater than those of low-mass WTTS, in good agreement with the evolutionary status of these two subgroups. The mean age of the younger subgroup of WTTS from our sample (2.3 Myr) essentially coincides with the mean duration of the protoplanetary disk accretion phase (2.3 Myr) for a representative sample of low-mass stars in seven young stellar clusters. The accretion disk dissipation time scale for the younger subgroup of CTTS (<4 Myr) in the Taurus–Auriga star-forming region is shown to be no greater than 0.4 Myr, in good agreement with the short protoplanetary disk dissipation time scale that is predicted by present-day protoplanetary disk evolution models.  相似文献

We consider the evolution of a rotating star with a mass of 16M and an angular momentum of 3.25 × 1052 g cm2 s?1, along with the hydrodynamic transport of angular momentum and chemical elements in its interiors. When the partial mixing of matter of the turbulent radiative envelope and the convective core is taken into account, the efficiency of the angular momentum transport by meridional circulation in the stellar interiors and the duration of the hydrogen burning phase increase. Depending on the Schmidt number in the turbulent radiative stellar envelope, the ratio of the equatorial rotational velocity to the circular one increases with time in the process of stellar evolution and can become typical of early-type Be stars during an additional evolution time of the star on the main sequence. Partial mixing of matter is a necessary condition under which the hydrodynamic transport processes can increase the angular momentum of the outer stellar layer to an extent that the equatorial rotational velocity begins to increase during the second half of the evolutionary phase of the star on the main sequence, as shown by observations of the brightest stars in open star clusters with ages of 10–25 Myr. When the turbulent Schmidt number is 0.4, the equatorial rotational velocity of the star increases during the second half of the hydrogen burning phase in the convective core from 330 to 450 km s?1.  相似文献

We investigate the possibility that gravity modes can be stochastically excited by turbulent convection in massive main-sequence (MS) stars. We build stellar models of MS stars with masses M=10?M ,15?M , and 20?M . For each model, we then compute the power supplied to the modes by turbulent eddies in the convective core (CC) and the outer convective zones (OCZ). We found that, for asymptotic gravity modes, the major part of the driving occurs within the outer iron convective zone, while the excitation of low n order modes mainly occurs within the CC. We compute the mode lifetimes and deduce the expected mode amplitudes. We finally discuss the possibility of detecting such stochastically-excited gravity modes with the CoRoT space-based mission.  相似文献

We present the results of Monte Carlo mass-loss computations for hot low-mass stars, specifically for subdwarf B (sdB) stars. It is shown that the mass-loss rates on the Horizontal Branch (HB) computed from radiative line-driven wind models are not high enough to create sdB stars. We argue, however, that mass loss plays a role in the chemical abundance patterns observed both in field sdB stars, as well as in cluster HB stars. The derived mass loss recipe for these (extremely) hot HB stars may also be applied to other groups of hot low-mass stars, such as post-HB (AGB-manqué, UV-bright) stars, over a range in effective temperatures between ?10 000 and 50 000 K. Finally, we present preliminary spectral synthesis on the more luminous sdB stars for which emission cores in Hα have been detected (Heber, U., et al.: 2003, in:Stellar Atmosphere Modeling, ASP Conference Proceedings, p. 251). We find that these line profiles can indeed be interpreted as the presence of a stellar wind with mass loss on the order of 10?11?M yr ?1.  相似文献

According to the result of the numerical simulation on stellar convective envelopes by the traditional mixing length theory, supersonic convection would occur on the top of the convective regions of the yellow-and-red giants and supergiants. This, however, is not self-consistent with the local convection theory itself. This paper is devoted to analyze in details the origin of supersonic convection, and at the same time to present a plot of the supersonic convection region on the H-R diagram based on the evolutionary track of population I stars. The main results of this paper are as follows: in the process of evolution, (1) no supersonic convection occurs in low-mass stars; (2) for intermediate-mass stars, because of the ionization of hydrogen, the supersonic convection occurs chiefly in the region of 3.6< lgTe <4.0, tilting from the lower left to the upper right on the H-R diagram and extending to the region of red giants for relatively massive stars; (3) for massive stars, the supersonic convection occurs after they deviate from ZAMS, the greater the stellar mass is, the earlier the supersonic convection emerges. For blue supergiants, the supersonic convection occurs at the absorbtion peak (lg T ∼5.3) of Fe and in the secondary ionization region of helium, but for the red- and yellow-giants and supergiants, it occurs in the ionization region of hydrogen.  相似文献

Roche-lobe overflow and common envelope evolution are very important in binary evolution, which is believed to be the main evolutionary channel to hot subdwarf stars. The details of these processes are difficult to model, but adiabatic expansion provides an excellent approximation to the structure of a donor star undergoing dynamical time scale mass transfer. We can use this model to study the responses of stars of various masses and evolutionary stages as potential donor stars, with the urgent goal of obtaining more accurate stability criteria for dynamical mass transfer in binary population synthesis studies. As examples, we describe here several models with the initial masses equal to 1 M and 10 M , and identify potential limitations to the use of our results for giant-branch stars.  相似文献

Surface lithium abundance and rotation velocity can serve as powerful and mutually complementary diagnostics of interior structure of stars. So far, the processes responsible for the lithium depletion during pre-main sequence evolution are still poorly understood. We investigate whether a correlation exists between equivalent widths of Li (EW(Li)) and rotation period (Prot) for weak-line T Tauri stars (WTTSs). We find that rapidly rotating stars have lower EW(Li) and the fast burning of Li begins at the phase when star’s Prot evolves towards 3 days among 0.9M to 1.4M WTTSs in Taurus–Auriga. Our results support the conclusion by Piau and Turch-Chiéze about a model for lithium depletion with age of the star and by Bouvier et al. in relation to rotation evolution. The turn over of the curve for the correlation between EW(Li) and Prot is at the phase of zero-age main sequence (ZAMS). The EW(Li) decreases with decreasing Prot before the star reaches the ZAMS, while it decreases with increasing Prot (decreasing rotation velocity) for young low-mass main sequence stars. This result could be explained as an age effect of Li depletion and the rapid rotation does not inhibit Li destruction among low-mass PMS stars.  相似文献

Horizontal branch stars should show significant differential rotation with depth. Models that assume systematic angular momentum exchange in the convective envelope and local conservation of angular momentum in the core produce HB models that preserve a rapidly rotating core. A direct probe of core rotation is available. The nonradial pulsations of the EC14026 stars frequently show rich pulsation spectra. Thus their pulsations probe the internal rotation of these stars, and should show the effects of rapid rotation in their cores. Using models of sdB stars that include angular momentum evolution, we explore this possibility and show that some of the sdB pulsators may indeed have rapidly rotating cores.  相似文献

The validity of current ideas to set up the semiconvective zone of the stellar models in corehelium-burning phase has been considered mainly from the view point of times-cales related to the mechanism. The time-scale of outward motion of convective shell has been estimated as being longer than that of evolution. From this point of view, it might be said that the models constructed with semiconvective zone are not appropriate for the core-helium-burning stars.  相似文献

The evolution of mass-losing very massive stars in the 500–10000M range has been investigated for two different initial compositions, (X, Z)=(0.8,0.0) and (X, Z)=(1.0,0.0). The evolutionary tracks are governed by two opposing factors which are the increase in the mean molecular weight in the convective core and the effect of mass loss. Conservative evolution of stars with massM?10000M is similar to that of massive stars (20–100M ), always moving to lower effective temperatures. For low values of the standard mass loss parameterN (50?N?200) the two opposing factors are almost in balance and the star is forced to move in a series of loops. For higher mass loss rates the loops disappear. In the 10000M case no loops are observed and the tracks always move to higher effective temperatures. For a given mass loss rate the transition between right and left moving tracks occurs at higher masses the lower is the mass loss rate.  相似文献

We discussmethods for analyzing the observational manifestations of differential rotation (DR). Based on the literary sources and our estimates (for 4 cool dwarfs), a list containing 75 stars was compiled. Using an example of analysis of the ‘ΔΩ–Teff’, ‘ΔΩ–rotation period’ and ‘ΔΩ–Rossby number’ diagrams we compared the determined parameters of DR stars with the results of theoretical studies. Particular attention is paid to the problems of measurements of DR parameters in low-mass dwarf stars, including the completely convective ones.We analyzed the measured parameters of solar-type DR stars. The objects having anti-solar DR (α < 0), and possiblemethods allowing to determine the sign of α are considered. We distinguish the areas of research that in the future may expand our understanding of DR manifestations: a study of DR in the inner regions of stars and an analysis of manifestations of the rotational brightness modulation caused by the spottedness of components in eclipsing-variable systems (subsynchronized systems).  相似文献

Intermediate resolution spectroscopy from the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope is analysed for 63 photometrically selected low-mass  (0.08–0.30 M)  candidates of the open cluster NGC 2547. We have confirmed membership for most of these stars using radial velocities, and found that lithium remains undepleted for cluster stars with   I > 17.54 ± 0.14  and   Ks > 14.86 ± 0.12  . From these results, several pre–main-sequence evolutionary models give almost model independent ages of 34–36 Myr, with a precision of 10 per cent. These ages are only slightly larger than the ages of 25–35(±5) Myr obtained using the same models to fit isochrones to higher mass stars descending towards the zero-age main-sequence, both in empirically calibrated and theoretical colour–magnitude diagrams. This agreement between age determinations in different mass ranges is an excellent test of the current generation of low-mass pre–main-sequence stellar models and lends confidence to ages determined with either method between 30 and 120 Myr.  相似文献
