Investigation of teleseismic P -wave recordings at a temporary network in the Eastern Carpathians, equipped with predominantly short-period sensors, is compared with synthetic modelling of anelastic attenuation of teleseismic waves in the upper mantle. Using the t * approach, we examine variations of amplitude decrease over frequency for teleseismic recordings in the frequency band 0.5–1.5 Hz. The results reveal a consistent pattern of increased t * values in the centre of the network, in the Vrancea region at the bend of the Carpathian Arc, although the magnitude of the observed variation in t * is much higher than expected. Synthetic t * parameter computations for the same event-receiver configurations reproduce the observed pattern in terms of relative variations. However, the amplitude of the synthetic t * values explains only 10–20 per cent of the observed variation in t *. t * is not a direct measure for anelastic attenuation but rather for a combination of anelastic and other attenuating effects such as scattering and amplitude fluctuation related to velocity inhomogeneities. If regional amplitude variations are solely attributed to anelastic attenuation, all other effects are mapped into Q . We discuss the role of anelastic attenuation and other effects in the case of the Eastern Carpathians and conclude that t * is an unsuitable parameter to characterize anelastic attenuation in the Eastern Carpathians.  相似文献

The blockage of the L g wave by crustal barriers such as continental margins and graben structures has long been recognized as providing a very useful tool for mapping large-scale lateral crustal variations along the propagation path. Numerical simulation of L g -wave propagation in complex anelastic media using the pseudospectral method provides insight into the nature of the propagation process using both snapshots of the wavefield and synthetic seismograms. A variety of 2-D structures have been investigated, including the influence of sediments, crustal thickness and attenuation.
Thick sedimentary basins covering a graben structure can have a major influence, since they remove L g energy by generating P conversion and scattering–the principal mechanisms for strong L g attenuation across a graben. The reduction of the L g energy is reinforced by anelastic attenuation in the sediments as well as the influence of the gradually thinning crustal waveguide associated with an elevated Moho.
The extinction of L g in a sequence of explosions fired across the central graben of the North Sea can be simulated by numerical calculations for the structure derived from refraction experiments.  相似文献

Measurements and interpretation of normal mode attenuation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
summary . Measurements of Q for modes of free oscillation provide the most accurate information about the anelastic properties of the whole Earth in the period range from 100 to 3000 s. We have obtained more than 230 Q measurements, by using two different techniques. Individual LaCoste—Romberg gravimeter recordings of three large earthquakes were used to observe the time rate of decay of spectral peaks corresponding to different modes. This method provided measurements of Q for 37 different modes. By stacking 211 WWSSN recordings of two deep earthquakes, we were able to measure Q for 197 modes, including many overtones which cannot be analysed using the spectra of individual recordings.  相似文献

The investigation of L g attenuation characteristics in the region bounding the western branch of the East African rift system using digital recordings from a seismic network located along the rift between Lake Rukwa and Lake Malawi is reported. A set of 24 recordings of L g waves from 12 regional earthquakes has been used for the determination of anelastic attenuation, Q Lg , and regional body-wave magnitude, m b Lg , scale. The events used have body-wave magnitudes, m b , between 4.6 and 5.5, which have been determined teleseismically and listed in ISC bulletins. The data were time-domain displacement amplitudes measured at 10 different frequencies (0.7–5.0  Hz). Q Lg and its frequency dependence, η , in the region can be represented in the form Q Lg = (186.2 ± 6.5)  f  (0.78±0.05). This model is in agreement with models established in other active tectonic regions. The L g -wave-based magnitude formula for the region is given by m b Lg = log   A + (3.76 ± 0.38)  log   D − (5.72 ± 1.06), where A is a half-peak-to-peak maximum amplitude of the 1  s L g wave amplitude in microns and D is the epicentral distance in kilometres. Magnitude results for the 12 regional earthquakes tested are in good agreement with the ISC body-wave magnitude scale.  相似文献

Summary A uniformly valid linear viscoelastic rheology is described which takes the form of a 'generalized' Burgers' body and which appears capable of reconciling the behaviour of the Earth's mantle across the complete spectrum of geodynamic time-scales. This spectrum is bracketed by the short time-scales of body wave and free oscillation seismology on which anelastic effects are dominant, and the long time-scale of mantle convection on which the Earth behaves viscously. The parameters of the model which control the viscous response are fixed by post-glacial rebound data whereas those which govern the anelasticity are to be determined by fitting the model to observations of seismic Q. The paper is concerned primarily with a discussion of the normal mode spectrum of the Earth as a generalized Burgers' body. Focusing upon the homogeneous model, it includes an initial analysis of the accuracy of first-order perturbation theory as a method of calculating the respective Q s of the elastic gravitational free oscillations. Also considered are the quasi-static modes of relaxation which only exact eigenanalysis can reveal. The importance of these modes is assessed within the context of a discussion of the effect of viscoelasticity upon the efficiency of Chandler wobble excitation.  相似文献

The amplitude of vertical, short period (1 s) Lg -waves from 575 shallow earthquakes recorded within the distance range 0|Mo-30|Mo by the Rhodesian seismograph network during the period 1968–77 are analysed to separate the effects of earthquake size, epicentral distance and station structure.
When corrected for geometrical spreading and Airy phase dispersion the decay of amplitude with distance yields an estimate of anelastic attenuation of 0.160 deg-1 which gives an average value of Q (the specific quality factor) of 603 |Mp 50 for propagation paths that lie along and across the East African Rift System. Inversion of the amplitude—distance curve gives the calibration or distance normalizing function. Thereby the amplitude of Lg can be used to provide an estimate of the size of small, local earthquakes in terms of the teleseismic body wave magnitude mb (after Henderson). The station effects of the six seismograph stations making up the network all lie within |Mp0.1 magnitude units. Since three of the stations lie on the Rhodesian craton while the remaining three lie on Precambrian mobile belts adjacent to the craton, the Precambrian basement geology does not significantly affect the amplitude of Lg  相似文献

Summary. Earlier efforts to generate the entire theoretical seismograms, including both body and surface waves for realistic sources buried in a radially heterogeneous anelastic, spherical earth, are extended to include the summation of 16 modes. The comparison between a real seismogram and theoretical time series, relative to different attenuation models in the upper mantle, yields information concerning the anelasticity under the Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

Magnetotelluric data from the backarc of the Central Andes in NW Argentinawere re-examined by employing impedance tensor decomposition and 2-D inversion and modelling techniques. The data in the period range of 50–15 000 s were collected on a profile of 220 km length reaching from the Eastern Cordillera across the Santa Barbara System to the Andean foreland of the Argentinean Chaco.
After a dimensionality analysis, data from most sites were treated as regional 2-D. The exception was the eastern section of the profile, where the magnetotelluric transfer functions for periods ≤ 1000 s reflect a 3-D earth. Application of two tensor decomposition schemes yielded a regional strike direction of N–S, which is the azimuth of the Central Andean mountain chains. Several 2-D models were obtained by pseudo- and full 2-D Occam inversion schemes. Special emphasis was placed on the inversion of phase data to reduce the influence of static shifts in the apparent resistivity data. The smooth inversion models all show a good conductor at depth. A final model was then calculated using a finite element forward algorithm.
The most prominent feature of the resulting model is a conductor which rises from depths of 180 km below the Chaco region to 80 km beneath the Santa Barbara System and the Eastern Cordillera. Its interpretation as a rise of the electrical asthenosphere is supported by seismic attenuation studies. Magnetotelluric results, surface heat-flow distribution in the area, and the electrical properties of crustal and mantle rocks suggest that the upper mantle is predominantly ductile beneath the Eastern Cordillera and the western Santa Barbara System. This generally agrees with anelastic seismic attenuation models of the area and is useful in discriminating between models of Q quality factor distribution.  相似文献

We have been developing an accurate and efficient numerical scheme, which uses the finite-difference method (FDM) in spherical coordinates, for the computation of global seismic wave propagation through laterally heterogeneous realistic Earth models. In the field of global seismology, traditional axisymmetric modeling has been used widely as an efficient approach since it can solve the 3-D elastodynamic equation in spherical coordinates on a 2-D cross-section of the Earth, assuming structures to be invariant with respect to the axis through the seismic source. However, it has the severe disadvantages that asymmetric structures about the axis cannot be incorporated and the source mechanisms with arbitrary shear dislocation have not been attempted for a long time. Our scheme is based on the framework of axisymmetric modeling but has been extended to treat asymmetric structures, arbitrary moment-tensor point sources, anelastic attenuation, and the Earth center which is a singularity of wave equations in spherical coordinates. All these types of schemes which solve 3-D wavefields on a 2-D model cross-section are classified as 2.5-D modeling, so we have named our scheme the spherical 2.5-D FDM. In this study, we compare synthetic seismograms calculated using our FDM scheme with three-component observed long-period seismograms including data from stations newly installed in Antarctica in conjunction with the International Polar Year (IPY) 2007–2008. Seismic data from inland Antarctica are expected to reveal images of the Earth's deep interior with enhanced resolution because of the high signal-to-noise ratio and wide extent of this region, in addition to the rarity of sampling paths along the rotation axis of the Earth. We calculate synthetic seismograms through the preliminary reference earth model (PREM) including attenuation using a moment-tensor point source for the November 9, 2009 Fiji earthquake. Our results show quite good agreement between synthetic and observed seismograms, which indicates the accuracy of observations in the Antarctica, as well as the feasibility of the spherical 2.5-D modeling scheme.  相似文献

Summary. The effect of attenuation on the coupling of nearly resonant multiplets in the Earth's free oscillation spectrum is investigated and numerical results are presented for several of the most strongly coupled low frequency multiplet pairs. The coupling influences considered are those of the Coriolis forces due to rotation and of the Earth's hydrostatic ellipticity of figure. It is found that the effects of attenuation (in particular the difference in Q −1 for the two multiplets) can significantly change the splitting diagrams and the degree to which coupling takes place. The Q values for the coupled singlets are, in general, all different and lie between the two Q values of the uncoupled multiplet pair. In addition it is shown that the diagonal sum rule may be readily extended to sets of coupled multiplets.  相似文献

We design a numerical algorithm for wave simulation in a borehole due to multipole sources. The stress–strain relation of the formation is based on the Kelvin–Voigt mechanical model to describe the attenuation. The modelling, which requires two anelastic parameters and twice the spatial derivatives of the lossless case, simulates 3-D waves in an axisymmetric medium by using the Fourier and Chebyshev methods to compute the spatial derivatives along the vertical and horizontal directions, respectively. Instabilities of the Chebyshev differential operator due to the implementation of the fluid–solid boundary conditions are solved with a characteristic approach, where the characteristic variables are evaluated at the source central frequency. The algorithm uses two meshes to model the fluid and the solid. The presence of the logging tool is modelled by imposing rigid boundary conditions at the inner surface of the fluid mesh. Examples illustrating the propagation of waves are presented, namely, by using monopoles, dipoles and a quadrupoles as sources in hard and soft formations. Moreover, the presence of casing and layers is considered. The modelling correctly simulates the features—traveltime and attenuation—of the wave modes observed in sonic logs, namely, the P and S body waves, the Stoneley wave, and the dispersive S waves in the case of multipole sources.  相似文献

Summary. Using nine IDA records for the Indonesian earthquake of 1977 August 19, we have formed an optimal linear combination of the records and have measured the frequency and Q of 0 S 0 and 1 S 0. The frequency was measured using the moment ratio method. The attenuation was measured by the minimum width method and by the time-lapse method. The frequency and attenuation were measured simultaneously by varying them to obtain a best fit to the data. A 2000-hr stack, the sum of nine individual records, for 0 S 0 gave a frequency of 0.814664 mHz±4 ppm. The values for the Q of 0 S 0 for the three different methods of measurement were 5600,5833 and 5700, respectively. The error in the estimates of Q -1 is about 5 per cent for the minimum power method. For 1 S 0 a 300-hr stack yielded a frequency of 1.63151 mHz±30 ppm. The values of Q for this mode were 1960, 1800 and 1850, respectively, with an error in Q -1 of about 12 per cent for the minimum power method.  相似文献

Summary. We report the results of our continuing efforts to compute theoretical seismograms for direct comparison with the experimental time series obtained with the long-period instruments of the WWSSN. The entire theoretical seismogram — body waves and surface waves — is generated for realistic sources buried in a radially heterogeneous, anelastic, spherical earth. The results described in Paper I (Nakanishi, Schwab & Knopoff) are extended to include the summation of 11 modes; for each, the dispersion, attenuation, and excitation are computed down to a minimum period of 1 s. Examples of the theoretical seismograms, and the comparison with experimental results are presented, The results of this comparison indicate that our first application of combined body- and surface-wave generation will concern the investigation of the intrinsic anelasticity in the upper mantle. The indicated technique for such an investigation is based on body waves simply crossing the region of high attenuation a few times in passing from focus to recording station, while a guided surface wave such as Sa , experiences this anelasticity over the entire propagation path.  相似文献

Numerical simulation of the propagation of P waves in fractured media   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We study the propagation of P waves through media containing open fractures by performing numerical simulations. The important parameter in such problems is the ratio between crack length and incident wavelength. When the wavelength of the incident wavefield is close to or shorter than the crack length, the scattered waves are efficiently excited and the attenuation of the primary waves can be observed on synthetic seismograms. On the other hand, when the incident wavelength is greater than the crack length, we can simulate the anisotropic behaviour of fractured media resulting from the scattering of seismic waves by the cracks through the time delay of the arrival of the transmitted wave. The method of calculation used is a boundary element method in which the Green's functions are computed by the discrete wavenumber method. For simplicity, the 2-D elastodynamic diffraction problem is considered. The rock matrix is supposed to be elastic, isotropic and homogeneous, while the cracks are all empty and have the same length and strike direction. An iterative method of calculation of the diffracted wavefield is developed in the case where a large number of cracks are present in order to reduce the computation time. The attenuation factor Q −1 of the direct waves passing through a fractured zone is measured in several frequency bands. We observe that the attenuation factor Q −1 of the direct P wave peaks around kd = 2, where k is the incident wavenumber and d the crack length, and decreases proportionally to ( kd ) −1 in the high-wavenumber range. In the long-wavelength domain, the velocity of the direct P wave measured for two different crack realizations is very close to the value predicted by Hudson's theory on the overall elastic properties of fractured materials.  相似文献

Summary. We give a systematic formulation and a rigorous justification of a perturbation technique for the computation of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of Love waves (and toroidal oscillations by an appropriate change for variables) in an anelastic medium with a constitutive law modelling geophysical media of current interest such as the Kelvin—Voigt Solid, the Maxwell Solid, the Standard Linear Solid, and the Standard Linear Solid with a continuous spectrum of relaxation times. We develop expressions relating the eigenvalues of eigenfunctions for Love waves in a continuously varying vertically stratified anelastic half-space to the corresponding elastic eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. Analytically, our correspondence principle has the form of a regular perturbation expansion in terms of a parameter for both the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The identification of ɛ is motivated by the dissipativity principle of viscoelasticity theory. Moreover, we show that our correspondence principle applies respectively only in the high and low frequency range for the Maxwell and Kelvin—Voigt Solids. Outside of the applicable range of frequencies, our correspondence principle yields no useful information. For the family of Standard Linear Solids it is uniformly applicable for all non-zero frequencies.
We also derive an explicit formula to estimate the radius of convergence of our perturbation expansions. This estimate of the radius of convergence for each eigenvalue and eigenfunction is functionally defined by the constitutive model for the anelastic medium. The estimate is frequency dependent and depends on the separation distance between the eigenvalue and the remainder of the spectrum of the corresponding elastic problem.  相似文献

Summary. There is evidence that the equivalent seismic sources of the Amchitka Island explosions — Longshot, Milrow and Cannikin — depart significantly from the simple model of a point compressional-source in a layered elastic-medium. Consequently modelling the observed seismograms using standard source-models may not be the most efficient method of determining source properties. Here an alternative to modelling is used to obtain information on the seismic sources due to the explosions. Broad-band (BB) estimates of the P signals are obtained from the short-period (SP) seismograms, corrected for attenuation, and interpreted in terms of P, pP and radiation from secondary sources. the main conclusions are:
(i) BB estimates of the radiated displacement from the explosions can be obtained with only a small reduction in the signal-to-noise ratio seen on SP seismograms;
(ii) observations of differences in pulse amplitudes and spectra are not necessarily due to differences in anelastic attenuation;
(iii) P and pP at a given station may differ in shape so that notches in the signal spectrum may not be related to source depth;
(iv) there is evidence of arrivals that others have identified as due to slap-down but which could be interpreted as an overshoot to pP;
(v) direct interpretation of the estimated ground displacement is a better procedure for determining the seismic source properties of explosions than modelling SP seismograms using idealised models as a starting point.  相似文献

We derive both 3-D and 2-D Fréchet sensitivity kernels for surface-wave group-delay and anelastic attenuation measurements. A finite-frequency group-delay exhibits 2-D off-ray sensitivity either to the local phase-velocity perturbation  δ c / c   or to its dispersion  ω(∂/∂ω)(δ c / c )  as well as to the local group-velocity perturbation  δ C / C   . This dual dependence makes the ray-theoretical inversion of measured group delays for 2-D maps of  δ C / C   a dubious procedure, unless the lateral variations in group velocity are extremely smooth.  相似文献

Summary . Vertical component Rayleigh-wave amplitudes from 1461 shallow earthquakes recorded in the distance range 0–150° are analysed to separate the effects of earthquake size, epicentral distance (Δ) and recording station.
The estimated decay of amplitude with distance has the form of a theoretical curve for the decay of Rayleigh waves with distance if the assumption is made that the decay due to dispersion for the data analysed is that of an Airy phase. Writing the decay due to anelastic attenuation as exp (- k Δ), k is estimated to be 0.676/rad over the whole range of distance. If the distance effects are represented by a straight line of the form h log Δ+ constant, h is estimated to be 1.15. The calibration function for computing M s derived from the estimated distance effects is very similar to that of Marshall & Basham.
Station effects on Rayleigh-wave amplitudes though statistically significant are small, and can probably be ignored in the computation of M s.
Comparing the estimated surface-wave magnitudes (earthquake size) obtained in this study with the long and short period body-wave magnitudes ( m LPb and m SPb respectively) obtained by Booth, Marshall & Young for the same earthquake shows that m LPb is about equal to M s over the magnitude range of interest (˜4.0–7.0). The m LPb and Ms relationship shows that the greater the long-period energy radiated by an earthquake the smaller proportionately is the short-period energy.  相似文献

Summary. Studies of teleseismic P -and S -wave amplitudes and spectra in the 0.5–4 Hz band show large variations in the attenuative properties of the upper mantle under the United States. The data indicate that attenuation is greatest under the south-western United States including, but not confined to, the Basin and Range province. The lowest attenuation prevails under the north central shield regions. The north-eastern part of the country, consisting of New England and possibly including a larger area along the eastern seaboard, is characterized by moderate attenuation in the mantle.
The level of the high-frequency energy in short-period seismic waves and the differences between Q values derived from short-and long-period data indicate that Q is frequency dependent. The form of frequency dependence of t * compatible with the data in the 0.5–4 Hz range does not allow a rapid decrease of t * with increasing frequency. Rather it supports a gradual decrease covering the broader 0.1–4 Hz range. The curves of t * versus frequency, for shield-to-shield and mixed shield-to-western United States type paths are parallel with an average difference of 0.2 s in t * in the short-period band, but may diverge towards the long-period band. For both curves t *p is below 1 s. For shield-to-shield paths t *p must be below 0.5 s at 1 Hz.  相似文献
