The distinct patterns, relatively low intensities and peak positions of overtone-combination bands of silicates and oxides suggest that the 5–8 μm spectral region can provide clues for the dust composition when near optically thick conditions exist for the 10-μm silicate feature. We present 1000–2500 cm−1 room-temperature laboratory spectra obtained from powders of silicate, aluminate and nitride minerals and silicate glasses. The spectra exhibit overtone absorption bands with mass absorption coefficients ∼100 times weaker than the fundamentals. These data are compared with the 5–8 μm spectra of deeply embedded young stellar objects observed with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer on the Infrared Space Observatory . Fits of the laboratory data to the observations, after subtraction of the 6.0-μm H2O ice feature and the 6.0-μm feature identified with organic refractory material, indicate that crystalline melilite (a silicate) or metamict hibonite (a radiation-damaged crystalline aluminate) may be responsible for much of the 6.9-μm absorption feature in the observations, with melilite providing the best match. A weaker 6.2-μm absorption in the young stellar object spectra is well matched by the spectra of hydrous crystalline amphibole silicates (actinolite and tremolite). Relative abundances of Si–O in room-temperature amphiboles to low-temperature H2O ice are in the range 0.46–3.9 and in melilite are in the range 2.5–8.6. No astronomical feature was matched by the overtones of amorphous silicates because these bands are too broad and peak at the wrong wavelength. Hence, this analysis is consistent with the 10-μm features of these objects being due to a mixture of crystalline and amorphous silicates, rather than only amorphous silicates.  相似文献

We present infrared spectroscopy of the Be/X-ray binary HDE 245770/A0535+26 obtained over the period 1992–1995. The spectra show significant variability, reflecting changes in the circumstellar environment during this time. A reduction in the flux observed in the Paschen series lines between 1993 December and 1994 September correlates with a similar reduction in both the strength of Hα and the optical continuum emission, which can be attributed to a reduction in the emission measure of the disc. A turnover between optically thin and thick emission is seen for both Paschen and Brackett series lines, and allows an estimate of the disc density as ∼1012 cm−3. Echelle spectroscopy reveals strong similarities between the He I 1.008, 2.058 μm, Hα and Paschen series line profiles, suggesting their formation in a similar (and asymmetric) region of the disc. In contrast, the line profile of He I 6678 Å indicates that it is formed at smaller radii than the other transitions.  相似文献

Nova Cassiopeiae 1993 (V705 Cas) was an archetypical dust-forming nova. It displayed a deep minimum in the visual light curve, and spectroscopic evidence for carbon, hydrocarbon and silicate dust. We report the results of fitting the infrared (IR) spectral energy distribution (SED) with the dusty code, which we use to determine the properties and geometry of the emitting dust. The emission is well described as originating in a thin shell whose dust has a carbon:silicate ratio of 2:1 by number (  ∼1.26:1  by mass) and a relatively flat size distribution. The 9.7- and 18-μm silicate features are consistent with freshly condensed dust and, while the lower limit to the grain size distribution is not well constrained, the largest grains have dimensions  ∼0.06 μm  ; unless the grains in V705 Cas were anomalously small, the sizes of grains produced in nova eruptions may previously have been overestimated in novae with optically thick dust shells. Laboratory work by Grishko & Duley may provide clues to the apparently unique nature of nova unidentified infrared (UIR) features.  相似文献

New mid-infrared spectra are presented of a number of oxygen-rich evolved stars which have IRAS LRS (Low Resolution Spectrometer) spectra that were classified as showing SiC emission. Two of the sources, IRC−20445 and IRC−20461, show the unidentified infrared (UIR) bands superposed on silicate emission features. Both objects have been classified as M supergiants. Several other sources show three-component spectra, with peaks at 10, 11 and 13 μm. The 13-μm source FI Lyr shows a narrow emission feature at 19 μm. Emission by oxide grains may be responsible for the 11-, 13- and 19-μm features. One object, IRC−20455, shows a self-absorbed silicate feature. There is no clear evidence for SiC emission in any of the spectra: the LRS spectra were erroneously classified as showing SiC emission because of the relatively strong 11-μm emission.  相似文献

The results of 3–4-μm spectroscopy towards the nuclei of NGC 3094, 7172, and 7479 are reported. In ground-based 8–13-μm spectra, all the sources have strong absorption-like features at ∼10 μm, but they do not have detectable polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features. The 3.4-μm carbonaceous dust absorption features are detected towards all nuclei. NGC 3094 shows a detectable 3.3-μm PAH emission feature, while NGC 7172 and 7479 do not. Nuclear emission whose spectrum shows dust absorption features but no PAH emission features, is thought to be dominated by highly obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) activity. For NGC 7172, 7479, and three other such nuclei in the literature, we investigate the optical depth ratios between the 3.4-μm carbonaceous dust and 9.7-μm silicate dust absorption     The     ratios towards three highly obscured AGNs with face-on host galaxies are systematically larger than the ratios in the Galactic diffuse interstellar medium or the ratios for two highly obscured AGNs with edge-on host galaxies. We suggest that the larger ratios can be explained if the obscuring dust is so close to the central AGNs that a temperature gradient occurs in it. If this idea is correct, our results may provide spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the putative 'dusty tori' in the close vicinity of AGNs.  相似文献

We present Hα spectropolarimetry observations of a sample of 10 bright T Tauri stars, supplemented with new Herbig Ae/Be star data. A change in the linear polarization across Hα is detected in most of the T Tauri (9/10) and Herbig Ae (9/11) objects, which we interpret in terms of a compact source of line photons that is scattered off a rotating accretion disc. We find consistency between the position angle (PA) of the polarization and those of imaged disc PAs from infrared and millimetre imaging and interferometry studies, probing much larger scales. For the Herbig Ae stars AB Aur, MWC 480 and CQ Tau, we find the polarization PA to be perpendicular to the imaged disc, which is expected for single scattering. On the other hand, the polarization PA aligns with the outer disc PA for the T Tauri stars DR Tau and SU Aur and FU Ori, conforming to the case of multiple scattering. This difference can be explained if the inner discs of Herbig Ae stars are optically thin, whilst those around our T Tauri stars and FU Ori are optically thick. Furthermore, we develop a novel technique that combines known inclination angles and our recent Monte Carlo models to constrain the inner rim sizes of SU Aur, GW Ori, AB Aur and CQ Tau. Finally, we consider the connection of the inner disc structure with the orientation of the magnetic field in the foreground interstellar medium: for FU Ori and DR Tau, we infer an alignment of the stellar axis and the larger magnetic field direction.  相似文献

Spectroscopy at 8–13 μm with T-ReCS on Gemini-S is presented for three galaxies with substantial silicate absorption features, NGC 3094, NGC 7172 and NGC 5506. In the galaxies with the deepest absorption bands, the silicate profile towards the nuclei is well represented by the emissivity function derived from the circumstellar emission from the red supergiant, μ Cephei which is also representative of the mid-infrared absorption in the diffuse interstellar medium in the Galaxy. There is spectral structure near 11.2 μm in NGC 3094 which may be due to a component of crystalline silicates. In NGC 5506, the depth of the silicate absorption increases from north to south across the nucleus, suggestive of a dusty structure on scales of tens of parsecs. We discuss the profile of the silicate absorption band towards galaxy nuclei and the relationship between the 9.7-μm silicate and 3.4-μm hydrocarbon absorption bands.  相似文献

We present arcsec-resolution images at 8.2, 10.0 and 11.3 μm of the unusual young object WL 16 in Ophiuchus, which has an extended envelope of fluorescing hydrocarbon molecules. To the limit of achieved sensitivity, the faint 10.0-μm continuum has a surface-brightness distribution that is not distinguishable from those at 8.2 and 11.3 μm, where the luminosity is known to be dominated by the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features. We conclude that the 10-μm continuum either arises from non-equilibrium heating of small dust grains that are well mixed with the hydrocarbons or is quasi-continuous emission from the PAH particles themselves, rather than thermal equilibrium emission from macroscopic dust grains, and that there is no significant silicate absorption variation across the source. The extended hydrocarbon emission may trace a flattened, equatorial distribution of circumstellar material or arise in bipolar lobes. The former case is slightly favoured, based on currently available data, and would imply that WL 16 is a relatively evolved Herbig Ae star, the equatorial plane of which has been almost cleared of normal dust, leaving only fluorescing hydrocarbons and larger coagulated particles as a possibly transient fossil of the original circumstellar disc.  相似文献

The nearby Mira-like variable L2 Pup is shown to be undergoing an unprecedented dimming episode. The stability of the period rules out intrinsic changes to the star, leaving dust formation along the line of sight as the most likely explanation. Episodic dust obscuration events are fairly common in carbon stars but have not been seen in oxygen-rich stars. We also present a 10-μm spectrum, taken with the Japanese Infrared Telescope in Space satellite, showing strong silicate emission that can be fitted with a detached, thin dust shell, containing silicates and corundum.  相似文献

Observations in the submillimetre (submm) waveband have recently revealed a new population of luminous sources. These are proposed to lie at high redshift and to be optically faint because of their high intrinsic dust obscuration. The presence of dust has been previously invoked in optical galaxy count models which use the Bruzual & Charlot evolution models with an exponential τ =9 Gyr star formation rate (SFR) for spirals, and these fit the count data well from U to K . We now show that by using either a 1/ λ or Calzetti absorption law for the dust and re-distributing the evolved spiral galaxy ultraviolet (UV) radiation into the far-infrared (FIR), these models can account for all of the 'faint' ( 1 mJy) 850-μm galaxy counts, but fail to fit 'bright' ( 2 mJy) sources, indicating that another explanation for the submm counts may apply at brighter fluxes, e.g., quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) or ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We find that the main contribution to the faint, submm number counts is in the redshift range 0.5< z <3, peaking at z ≈1.8. The above model, using either dust law, can also explain a significant proportion of the extragalactic background at 850 μm, as well as producing a reasonable fit to the bright 60-μm IRAS counts.  相似文献

The 2.2–200 μm spectrum of OH32.8–0.3 has been modelled. Mie theory and radiative transfer models of the 3-μm band of H2O ice are consistent with a strongly crystalline structural phase. This is also confirmed by the presence of a 44/62-μm band complex analogous to that of laboratory crystalline H2O ice analogues. The highly ordered phase may be the result of direct crystallization upon deposition as has been theorized by Kouchi et al. At the large total optical depths typical of the radiative transfer models for this object (τ9.7∼ 40), we find no significant difference between the Mie theory and radiative transfer models of the 3-μm band. On the other hand, large differences are found for the 9.7-μm silicate band. In contrast to Mie theory extinction profiles, those computed via radiative transfer modelling indicate that the 12-μm H2O ice band (the so-called librational band) is substantially attenuated. This, in addition to the inherent broadness and weakness of the 12-μm ice band, may explain why this band has not been clearly identified in observational spectra of oxygen–rich evolved objects.  相似文献

We present 450- and 800-μm images, made with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, of the NGC 2024 molecular ridge. The seven previously known compact cores, FIR1–7, have been detected, and FIR5 has been resolved into a compact object and an associated extended source to the east. The estimated masses of the dense cores vary between 1.6 and 5.1 M⊙ per 14-arcsec beam, assuming a dust temperature of 30 K and a dust opacity of κ800 μm = 0.002 m2 kg−1. A spectral index map made from the 450- and 800-μm images shows spatial variations, with the spectral index, α ( F ν ∝ να), being systematically lower towards the dense cores. We interpret this as evidence for a lower value of the frequency dependence of the dust opacity, β, towards the denser cores relative to the surrounding molecular material. This may indicate that grain growth is occurring in the cores, prior to planetesimal formation. By comparing the high-resolution 450-μm image with interferometer maps of the integrated CS(2–1) emission, the previously reported discrepancy between dust continuum emission and molecular line emission is found to be very localized. Depletion and temperature variations are discussed as possible explanations.  相似文献

We report spatially resolved variations in the 3.4-μm hydrocarbon absorption feature and the 3.3-μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission band in the Circinus galaxy over the central few arcsec. The absorption is measured towards warm emitting dust associated with Coronal line regions to the east and west of the nucleus. There is an absorption optical depth  τ3.4 μm∼ 0.1  in the core which decreases to the west and increases to the east. This is consistent with increased extinction out to ∼40 pc east of the core, supported by the Coronal emission line intensities which are significantly lower to the east than the west. PAH emission is measured to be symmetrically distributed out to ±4 arcsec, outside the differential extinction region. The asymmetry in the 3.4-μm absorption band reflects that seen in the 9.7-μm silicate absorption band reported by Roche et al., and the ratio of the two absorption depths remains approximately constant across the central regions, with  τ3.4 μm9.7 μm∼ 0.06 ± 0.01  . This indicates well-mixed hydrocarbon and silicate dust populations, with no evidence for significant changes near the nucleus.  相似文献

We present X-ray/ γ -ray spectra of Cyg X-1 observed during the transition from the hard to the soft state and in the soft state by ASCA , RXTE and CGRO /OSSE in 1996 May and June. The spectra consist of a dominant soft component below ∼2 keV and a power-law-like continuum extending to at least ∼800 keV. We interpret them as emission from an optically thick, cold accretion disc and from an optically thin, non-thermal corona above the disc. A fraction f ≳0.5 of total available power is dissipated in the corona.
We model the soft component by multicolour blackbody disc emission taking into account the torque-free inner-boundary condition. If the disc extends down to the minimum stable orbit, the ASCA RXTE data yield the most probable black hole mass of M X≈10 M and an accretion rate,     , locating Cyg X-1 in the soft state in the upper part of the stable, gas-pressure-dominated, accretion-disc solution branch.
The spectrum of the corona is well modelled by repeated Compton scattering of seed photons from the disc off electrons with a hybrid, thermal/non-thermal distribution. The electron distribution can be characterized by a Maxwellian with an equilibrium temperature of kT e∼30–50 keV, a Thomson optical depth of τ ∼0.3 and a quasi-power-law tail. The compactness of the corona is 2≲ℓh≲7, and a presence of a significant population of electron–positron pairs is ruled out.
We find strong signatures of Compton reflection from a cold and ionized medium, presumably an accretion disc, with an apparent reflector solid angle, Ω/2π∼0.5–0.7. The reflected continuum is accompanied by a broad iron K α line.  相似文献

We report further UKIRT spectroscopic observations of Sakurai's object (V4334 Sgr) made in 1999 April/May in the 1–4.75 μm range, and find that the emission is dominated by amorphous carbon at T d~600 K. The estimated maximum grain size is 0.6 μm, and the mass lower limit is 1.7±0.2×10−8 M to 8.9±0.6×10−7 M for distances of 1.1–8 kpc. For 3.8 kpc the mass is 2.0±0.1×10−7 M.
We also report strong He  i emission at 1.083 μm, in contrast to the strong absorption in this line in 1998. We conclude that the excitation is collisional, and is probably caused by a wind, consistent with the P Cygni profile observed by Eyres et al. in 1998.  相似文献

We present X‐ray spectral analysis of the super‐soft source CAL87 using ASCA, Chandra, XMM‐Newton observations. Early ASCA CCD spectrum reported a strong oxygen absorption edge, which is considered to originate in the an optically thick white‐dwarf atmosphere. On the other hand, contemporaneous grating observations by Chandra and XMM‐Newton indicate emission line dominated spectra, which obviously indicate the optically thin origin. Fitting all the available CCD (ASCA and XMM‐Newton) and grating spectra (XMM‐Newton and Chandra) simultaneously, we show that the CAL87 X‐ray energy spectrum is in fact composed of both an optically thick component with deep absorption edges and an optically thin component with numerous emission lines. The current result supports the standard SSS model that the primary source of X‐ray emission is nuclear burning in the white dwarf atmosphere, surrounded by a highly photoionised, optically thin corona (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present optical and infrared observations of BQ Cam, the optical counterpart to the Be/X-ray transient system V0332+53. BQ Cam is shown to be an O8–9Ve star, which places V0332+53 at a distance of ∼7 kpc. H α spectroscopy and infrared photometry are used to discuss the evolution of the circumstellar envelope. Owing to the low inclination of the system, parameters are strongly constrained. We find strong evidence for a tilt of the orbital plane with respect to the circumstellar disc (presumably on the equatorial plane). Even though the periastron distance is only ≈10 R *, during the present quiescent state the circumstellar disc does not extend to the distance of periastron passage. Under these conditions, X-ray emission is effectively prevented by centrifugal inhibition of accretion. The circumstellar disc is shown to be optically thick at optical and infrared wavelengths, which, together with its small size, is taken as an indication of tidal truncation.  相似文献

High signal-to-noise ratio spectra are presented of the 10-μm silicate absorption feature in lines of sight towards Elias 16 and 18 in the Taurus dark cloud, and towards the heavily reddened supergiant Cyg OB2 no. 12. The observations are fitted with laboratory and astronomical spectra to produce intrinsic absorption profiles. These features, which represent molecular-cloud and diffuse ISM dust respectively, are better fitted with emissivity spectra of the Trapezium and μ Cephei than they are with those of laboratory, terrestrial, or other observations of circumstellar silicates. The difference in width between the silicate band in the two environments can be almost entirely ascribed to a broad excess absorption in the long-wavelength wing of the profiles, which is much stronger in the molecular-cloud lines of sight, and possibly reflects grain growth in the denser environment. Limits are placed on the strength of fine spectral structure; if there is a crystalline silicate component in these spectra, it is most likely to be serpentine. Column-density upper limits for methanol and the photolysis product hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) are less than a few per cent of those of water ice and silicates.  相似文献

We report results from a systematic study of X-ray emission from black hole transients in quiescence. In this state, mass accretion is thought to follow the geometry of an outer optically thick, geometrically thin disc and an inner optically thin, geometrically thick radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF). The inner flow is likely also coupled to the jets near the black hole that are often seen in such systems. The goal of the study is to see whether the X-ray emission in the quiescent state is mainly powered by the accretion flow or by the jets. Using data from deep XMM – Newton observations of selected black hole transients, we have found that the quiescent X-ray spectra are, to a high precision, of power-law shape in the cases of GRO J1655-40 and V404 Cyg. Such spectra deviate significantly from the expected X-ray spectrum of the RIAF at very low-accretion rates. On the other hand, they can naturally be explained by emission from the jets, if the emitting electrons follow a power-law spectral distribution (as is often assumed). The situation remains ambiguous in the case of XTE J1550-564, due to the relatively poorer quality of the data. We discuss the implication of the results.  相似文献

Submillimetre mapping observations of the active edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 3079 are presented. These maps at 850 and 450 μm were made with the Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT).
The source structure at these wavelengths consists of a central unresolved source embedded in diffuse disc emission, similar to that displayed at 1.2 mm. The disc emission is fitted with two optically thin, isothermal dust models which give temperatures of 12 and 31 K, similar to those derived previously by Braine et al. The core component is well described by a single-temperature fit (∼32 K). The combined dust mass from these observations, using the same mass absorption coefficient as Devereux & Young (1990) is 3.5×108 M, of which ∼90 per cent resides in the cold component of the galactic disc. The effect of the cold dust component detected by SCUBA is thus to reduce the global gas-to-dust mass ratio from ∼1400 found in the above study to 85, very similar to the Galactic level. Calculations using the models of Draine & Lee and/or alternative molecular gas mass estimates yield gas-to-dust mass ratios in the range 60–190.
The data presented here, together with previously published 1.2-mm mapping observations and IRAS data, are inconsistent with detections made with the Infrared Space Observatory ( ISO ). In particular, the latter give an excess of flux at 200 and 180 μm relative to that predicted by our simple model fits (approximately a factor of 2–3).  相似文献
