A semiempirical model is constructed for the relationship between the coefficient of asymmetry of Light Scattering phase function in water K and the scattering coefficient σ, which shows a mechanism of an increase in the asymmetry coefficient as the scattering coefficient grows as a result of an increase in the concentration of organic particles. The mechanism of this relationship lies in the presence in all natural waters of molecular scattering and scattering by mineral particles that create background scattering in water medium, which is overlaid by scattering by organic particles. This relationship has a regional character caused by the regional features of background scattering and the average size of organic particles in those regions. The model relationships K = f(σ) are plotted properly to the experimental ones in the various regions.  相似文献

In the marine environment, colloidal sulfurs often occur due to the redox reaction of sulfide ions and oxygen molecules. It is important to know the spectral refractive index of colloidal sulfurs for the discussion of the light scattering in the region where colloidal sulfurs are formed. We presented new methods to estimate the refractive index from the wave length of maximum absorbance (turbidity) of a nearly mono-dispersed colloidal solution. In these methods, the ripples in a first main maximum of the scattering efficiency,Q sca , were taken into consideration. Time-series measurements of temperature, salinity, suspended matter and beam attenuation coefficient () were measured at four hour intervals for about two days in June/ July 1982 in the middle shelf region and the coastal region of the southeastern Bering Sea. Current meters were also moored at the same locations.Depth-time distributions of indicated that profiles of suspended matter resulted from a combined process of resuspension of underlying sediments and sinking of suspended particles. Average-values for all measurements for particles revealed that the upward transport of particles due to resuspension formed a boundary layer, with a thickness apparently related to scalar speed. The average-profiles of the particle volume concentration were assumed to result from a balance between the sinking and diffusive flux of particles under a steady state, and the upward fluxes were calculated. Within the boundary layer, values of the upward fluxes of particulate organic matter linearly decreased with the logarithm of distance from the bottom. Fluxes of organic carbon at the upper edge of the boundary layer were 0.375 gC·m–2·day–1 in the middle shelf region (18 m above the bottom, bottom depth=78m) and 0.484gC·m–2·day–1 in the coastal region (25 m above the bottom, bottom depth=33m), and fluxes of nitrogen in both regions were 0.067 gN·m–2·day–1. The flux of organic carbon obtained in the middle shelf region (18 m above the bottom) agreed approximately with the flux (0.416 gC·m–2·day–1) calculated by substituting primary production data into the empirical equation of Suess (1980).  相似文献

The vertical distributions of suspended particles in Osaka Bay were measured by using anin situ beam attenuation meter. The concentration of suspended particles near the bottom increases rapidly toward the bottom where size of sediment is in a range of silt. The settling velocity of suspended particles near the bottom was measured with the use of a settling tower in the laboratory. The settling velocity of the suspended particles with diameter from 10 to 100m is 2×10–3cm s–1 to 5×10–2cm s–1. The density of the particles ranges from 2.0 to 1.1 and decreases with increasing particle diameter.  相似文献

An attempt is made to find a relation betweenK, the absolute value of accumulation-dispersal coefficient of marine organisms referred to a region or a group (Kawai, 1986a), andL, the square root of the area of the region or the group over which the distribution density of organisms is averaged.K is estimated as shown below. For appropriate sampling time-intervals,K becomes greater than other coefficients such as population growth coefficient. Using this result, an order of magnitude ofK dependent onL is estimated from various data of temporal change in density. With the aid of a dependenceQL –2/3 (Kawai, 1985b), a relationKL –2/3 is predicted for 30 cmL 30 km, whereQ andK are the root-mean-square values of area-averaged horizontal divergence of near-surface flows and of the accumulation-dispersal coefficient, respectively. The reason whyK tends to have the order of magnitude of weak or mediumQ is discussed. The doubling-halving time of the distribution density due to accumulation-dispersal,T, is related toK byT=(loge2)/¦K¦L 2/3. Chlorophyll a concentrations of net (retained on 30 m mesh net) and total plankton in surface waters were determined along cruise tracks in an area of the northern North Pacific Ocean and the adjacent Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska from summer to autumn. Total chlorophyll a concentrations were high with a great areal and temporal variations in the western northern North Pacific compared to the eastern part. Chlorophyll a concentrations of netplankton varied from 0.001 to 0.230 g chl a l–1 (average, 0.029 ± 0.040 g chl a l–1), and showed a positive relation but a weak regression coefficient (r 2 = 0.551) against the "average total chlorophyll a" (average of total chlorophyll a at the beginning and at the end during sampling of netplankton). However there were several data points showing high "average total chlorophyll a" but low netplankton and vice versa. Average percentage share of netplankton in the total chlorophyll a was estimated to be as large as 4.26%.  相似文献

A specific community of heterotrophic microorganisms—bacterioneuston—was detected in the near surface microlayers of the sea (microhorizons 150, 1–2 cm) by means of original methods and sampling devices. Investigation of bacterioneuston in the different seas (the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, the north-eastern part of the Pacific Ocean) revealed its peculiar features which are high content of microorganisms, its flourishing during the period of wind and wave action increase, a rich specific composition with a bright pigmentation of strains and somewhat specific biochemical properties.The ways and sources of bacterioneuston formation as well as its part in the life of water ecosystems are discussed in this paper.  相似文献

The strength of the vertical mixing in the bottom mixed layer near the continental shelf break in the East China Sea was directly measured with the Micro-Scale Profiler (MSP). It has been shown that there is no significant statistical relation between the turbulent energy dissipation and the degree of the stratificationN 2. It seems that the vigorous turbulence occurs not constantly but intermittently in the bottom mixed layer so that a large variation of is found depending on the time. In contrast to , the coefficient of the vertical eddy diffusivityK z is mostly determined byN such thatK z is large in the bottom mixed layer and small in the thermocline. Large value ofK z in the bottom mixed layer is also found in the time series ofK z estimated in terms of Richardson number calculated from the data obtained with electromagnetic current meters. The value ofK z more than 10 cm2s–1 frequently occur in the layer of 20–25 m thick just above the bottom.  相似文献

Average values of inherent optical properties for the 400–700 nm waveband were estimated from quantum irradiance measurements on 27 New Zealand lakes of diverse optical character, using published nomograms. Secchi disc depths, turbidity, algal pigment, non‐volatile suspended solids, and absorption by membrane‐filtered samples at 440 nm (g 440 ) were also measured. Turbidity (NTU) correlated closely with the scattering coefficient (m‐1) and these quantities were almost numerically equal, as found in other studies. The data were found to conform to an expression in the oceanographic literature relating Secchi disc depth to the beam attenuation and diffuse attenuation coefficients. Specific beam attenuation, scattering, and absorption coefficients were estimated from the coefficients of linear multiple regressions of the measured total coefficients on the variables: total pigment (chlorophyll a + phaeopigment), non‐volatile suspended solids, and g 440. The estimated values were in reasonable agreement with similar specific coefficients reported in the oceanographic literature. The coefficients provide a basis for predicting clarity in new impoundments or for predicting the effects of loading changes (e.g., of nutrients) on the clarity of existing lakes. The coefficients can be used for classifying lake waters into different optical types.  相似文献

Discussed in this paper is the deep scattering layer (DSL) observed during the experiment in the South China Sea in October 1983. The authors have investigated the acoustic characteristics of the DSL, such as the volume scattering strength of the water column, the thickness of the layer and the coefficient of the backscattering. Resonant scattering, presumably caused by the swimbladder of fishes, is responsible for the bulk of observed reverberation. In addition, the size of the swimbladder forming the acoustic scatter of the DSL is also estimated.  相似文献

The short-term (5 day) accumulation of Cu and Zn in different tissues of the marine gastropod, Littorina littorea, has been studied in the presence of 10 mg l−1 of antifouling paint particles and pre- or simultaneously contaminated algal food (Ulva lactuca). Accumulation of Cu was observed in the head–foot, digestive gland–gonad complex and gills to extents dependent on how and when food was contaminated and administered. However, retention of Zn was only observed in the gills and only when L. littorea and U. lactuca were simultaneously exposed to paint particles. Relative to the alga, faecal material was highly enriched in Zn, suggesting that the animal is able to rapidly eliminate this metal, most likely through the formation and egestion of insoluble phosphate granules. Thus, L. littorea is a useful biomonitor of marine contamination by antifouling applications in respect of Cu but not Zn.  相似文献

The downward short- and long-wave radiation fluxes at the sea surface (S, L) were measured aboard the R/VHakuho Maru, University of Tokyo, for the period of 117 days on six cruises from 1981 to 1985 in the western North Pacific near Japan. The upward fluxes of short- and long-wave radiation (S, L) were calculated by Payne's (1972) table and the Stefan-Boltzmann's law, respectively. The sensible and laten heat fluxes (Q h ,Q e ) were also estimated from an aerodynamic bulk method.From April to August, the daily mean value ofS varied with the amplitude of 100200 Wm–2. The value ofS was estimated approximately 6% ofS in all seasons. The difference betweenL andL was so small that the net radiation flux (Q n ) was dominated byS. In addition, the net heat flux at the sea surface was also dominated byS due to small values ofQ h andQ e , and then the ocean was warmed at the rate of 111 Wm–2 in April and 63 Wm–2 in August in the Oyashio Area, and 132 Wm–2 in May and 164 Wm–2 in June in the Kuroshio Area, respectively.From September to March, a remarkable negative correlation between the day to day variation ofS and that ofL was observed except when an intense cold air outbreak occurred. It was found that the correlation was caused by the cloud climatological feature of the western North Pacific in this period.S was not a dominant factor in the net heat flux. The value ofQ h +Q e in the Kuroshio Area ranged from 260 Wm–2 to 630 Wm–2, much larger thanQ n which ranged from –8 Wm–2 to 92 Wm–2 in the leg mean values (each leg period was about 10 days). Then the ocean was cooled at the rate of –160–620 Wm–2 during this period. The net heat flux in the Kuroshio Area averaged over five legs from late November to February was –473 Wm–2. This value is 50100% larger than the climatological values reported so far.The temporal and spatial variability of radiation fluxes and heat fluxes during each leg was also discussed.  相似文献

Light scattering profiles and water samples for filtration of suspended particulate matter were obtained during fall, 1973, from Ice Island T-3, then located about 50 miles north of Ellesmere Island. The profiles reveal almost no variability in scattering, either in the water column, or in time during our two weeks of field work. Gravimetric analysis of the filtered suspended particulate matter shows that mass concentrations are low, averaging about 7g l–1, and that they too remain very constant. The four water masses present in the Arctic Ocean could not be distinguished by our observations of light scattering and mass concentration of suspended particulates.  相似文献

The content and the oxidation state of arsenic and antimony in coastal seawater were determined coupled with chemical separation and neutron activation method. The contents of arsenic and antimony in coastal seawater were estimated to be 1.56–2.73g As/l, 0.25–0.57g Sb/l. Most parts of these elements exist as soluble ionic species, passing through 0.45 pore-size membrane filter, and at surface, 80–97% of arsenic occurs as arsenate and 70–94 % of antimony may occurs as antimonate. The vertical distribution of arsenite and arsenate is almost constant from the surface to 1,200 m depth. However the distribution of Sb(III) and Sb(V) is much more complicated with depth.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of anthropogenic carbon content of the water (exDIC) in the Oyashio area just outside of the Kuroshio/Oyashio Interfrontal Zone (K/O Zone) was estimated by the simple 1-D advection-diffusion model calibrated by the distribution of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). The average concentration of exDIC for = 26.60–27.00 is multiplied by the volume transport of Oyashio water into the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) to estimate the annual transport of exDIC into NPIW through K/O Zone. The estimated transport of exDIC was 0.018–0.020 GtC/y, which corresponds to 15% of the whole total exDIC accumulation in the temperate North Pacific. A simple assessment using the NPIW 1-box model indicates that the current study explains at least 70% of the total annual transport of exDIC into NPIW, and that small exDIC sources for NPIW still exists in addition to K/O Zone.  相似文献

The amount of penetration of a western boundary current into a marginal sea which is connected to an open ocean by two narrow straits is estimated from a linear, steady and barotropic theoretical model. In this model the western boundary current in the open ocean is driven by a wind stress imposed at the sea surface. The inflow of the water of the open ocean into the marginal sea is caused by the pressure difference between two straits produced by the wind-driven circulation in the open ocean.Main external parameters are combined into two non-dimensional parameters; and (the ratio of the depth of the marginal sea to that of the open ocean), whereb is the distance between north and south boundaries of the ocean,D 0 is the depth of the open ocean, is the latitudinal variation of the Coriolis parameter andR is the coefficient of friction. The friction is assumed to be proportional to the flow velocity.In the limit of infinite the volume transport into the marginal sea is not affected by the width of two straits and . It is mainly controlled by the wind stress and the positions of two straits. For finite values of , however, the volume transport depends considerably on and the width of the straits.Guided by both this model and physical considerations, we obtained a relation between the volume transport into the marginal sea and the external parameters. This relation predicts that about 2 % of the volume transport of the Kuroshio penetrates into the Japan Sea.  相似文献

Correlations of the single scattering albedo ω0 and the probability of backscattering \(\tilde b_b \) with the beam attenuation coefficient c are presented for a wavelength of 550 nm in waters of cases 1 and 2. The vertical distribution of salts brought by the Bosphorus undercurrent is numerically evaluated. By multiplying the average vertical salinity gradient by the diffusion coefficient,K z , and the cross-section of the sea at the appropriate depth, we can determine the total vertical salt flux,Q(z). The derivative ofQ with respect toz depicts the salt source intensity distribution over depth. The highest intensity, Q/z, matches the 200 m depth level, i.e. the shelf edge. Below 1500 m, Q/z equals merely 0.1% of the value observed at a depth of 200 m. Above 37 m, salts are noted to sink, which corresponds to their outflow with the Bosphorus current. A recent unconsolidated marine sediment collected from the Aleutian basin of the Bering Sea (5702.9N, 17657.4W) was separated into eight size fractions by sieving. Each of the fractions was analyzed for density, organic carbon, total nitrogen and various organic materials. A detailed analysis of the correlation of organic carbon and total nitrogen to the mean diameter of the particles separated, indicated that the surface sorption processes of organic matter were the determinative factor controlling the concentration of organic carbon and total nitrogen on silt and clay particles of the sediments.Selective sorption of amino acids was found to occur in the 8–20 and 5–8m. fractions of the sediment. The distribution and inventory of artificial radionuclides,239,240Pu and137Cs were determined in the East China and the Yellow Seas in 1987. Almost all of239,240Pu and 50 to 80% of137Cs in the continental shelf area are retained in the sediment column.239,240Pu sediment inventory in the sea area is larger than the fallout input and tends to increase southwardly. This excess239,240Pu and the lateral distribution are attributable to the supply of239,240Pu by the Yangtze River discharge. On the contrary,137Cs sediment inventory shows a decrease to the south, and the fact can be accounted for by the southward dispersion of fine silt particles discharged from the Yellow River. Total137Cs inventory is smaller than the estimated fallout input, and the fact seems to indicate dispersion of137Cs out of the shelf region. Vertical profiles of239,240Pu and137Cs contents in sediments differ from that of natural210Pb, implying the effect of varied accumulation rates of the artificial radionuclides over the sediment particle mixing by benthic organisms. Apparent maximum sediment particle mixing coefficient (D B ) calculated from the excess210Pb profiles in stations located between the inner and outer shelves ranged from 1.4 to 8.3 cm2y–1. ThisD B value is higher than that in the Okinawa Trough (1.0 cm2y–1), but lower than previously estimatedD B value (26 cm2y–1) in the outer shelf mud.  相似文献
