The general-relativistic Ohm’s law for a two-component plasma which includes the gravitomagnetic force terms even in the case of quasi-neutrality has been derived. The equations that describe the electromagnetic processes in a plasma surrounding a neutron star are obtained by using the general relativistic form of Maxwell equations in a geometry of slow rotating gravitational object. In addition to the general-relativistic effect first discussed by Khanna and Camenzind (Astron. Astrophys. 307:665, 1996) we predict a mechanism of the generation of azimuthal current under the general relativistic effect of dragging of inertial frames on radial current in a plasma around neutron star. The azimuthal current being proportional to the angular velocity ω of the dragging of inertial frames can give valuable contribution on the evolution of the stellar magnetic field if ω exceeds 2.7×1017(n/σ) s−1 (n is the number density of the charged particles, σ is the conductivity of plasma). Thus in general relativity a rotating neutron star, embedded in plasma, can in principle generate axial-symmetric magnetic fields even in axisymmetry. However, classical Cowling’s antidynamo theorem, according to which a stationary axial-symmetric magnetic field can not be sustained against ohmic diffusion, has to be hold in the general-relativistic case for the typical plasma being responsible for the rotating neutron star.  相似文献

A study of the dawn-dusk asymmetry of the Venus nightside ionosphere is conducted by examining the configuration of the ionospheric trans-terminator flow around Venus and also the dawn-ward displacement of the region where most of the ionospheric holes and the electron density plateau profiles are observed (dawn meaning the west in the retrograde rotation of Venus and that corresponds to the trailing side in its orbital motion). The study describes the position of the holes and the density plateau profiles which occur at neighboring locations in a region that is scanned as the trajectory of the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) sweeps through the nightside hemisphere with increasing orbit number. The holes are interpreted as crossings through plasma channels that extend downstream from the magnetic polar regions of the Venus ionosphere and the plateau profiles represent cases in which the electron density maintains nearly constant values in the upper ionosphere along the PVO trajectory. From a collection of PVO passes in which these profiles were observed it is found that they appear at neighboring positions of the ionospheric holes in a local solar time (LST) map including cases where only a density plateau profile or an ionospheric hole was detected. It is argued that the ionospheric holes and the density plateau profiles have a common origin at the magnetic polar regions where plasma channels are formed and that the density plateau profiles represent crossings through a friction layer that is adjacent to the plasma channels. It is further suggested that the dawn-dusk asymmetry in the position of both features in the nightside ionosphere results from a fluid dynamic force (Magnus force) that is produced by the combined effects of the trans-terminator flow and the rotational motion of the ionosphere that have been inferred from the PVO measurements.  相似文献

The structure of the corotating region, which forms an inner portion of a stellar magnetosphere, is reconsidered in a quasi-neutral case by taking into account the inertial effects of electrons as well as that of ions up to the first order in their mass ratio (δ=m?/m+). It is emphasized first that the magnetosphere is not globally equipotential even in the frame rotating with a central star (i.e. ?#0, where ? is the ‘non-Backus’ potential) due at least to the inertial effects of plasma particles. However, it is shown that the condition ?=0 is asymptotically recovered in the corotating region owing to the presence of the drift current which can be taken into account only when δ is not entirely neglected. This fact suggests that the deviation of the plasma motion in the outer magnetosphere from the corotation can be attributed to the non-zero ?. A globally self-consistent solution is obtained under this condition (?=0). In contrast with the solutions in the ‘force-free’ and the ‘mass-less-electron’ approximations, this solution has a disk structure in the corotation zone in which the plasma and the current density are concentrated to a thin disk near the magnetic equator. Owing to this sheet current in the disk the lines of force of the stellar magnetic field are modified to form a very elongated shape (the magnetodisk) if the plasma β-value is fairly large. Such a disk structure seems to be a common feature in the high β inner magnetospheres of various types of stars.  相似文献

Under influence of external gravity generated by Galactic all components excluding ISM, a magnetized gas disk may experience both Parker and convective instabilities. Growth rate of the convective instability increases with decreasing perturbation wavelength, and the convective motion makes sheet-like structures all over before the Parker instability forms structures of any meaningful size in the disk. Yet the Parker instability is thought to be an ideal route to form large-scale condensations in the Galaxy. In search of a means to curb convective activities in the Galactic ISM disk, the external gravity is replaced by self-gravity as a driving force of the Parker instability and the gravitational instability is invoked to reinforce the Parker instability. Perturbation of interchange mode is known to trigger convective instability in such disk and the one of undular mode to activate the Parker instability, while the gravitational instability can be triggered by both modes. Therefore, the resulting Jeans instability would help the Parker instability to overcome disrupting behavior of the convection. Dynamical properties of the disk can be characterized by ratio α of magnetic to gas pressure, adiabatic exponent γ, scale height H of the ISM, and disk thickness za. A linear stability analysis has been done to the disk, and the maximum growth rate of the Parker–Jeans instability is compared with that of the convective instability. The latter may or may not be higher than the former, depending on the disk parameters. The Parker–Jeans instability has chances to override the convective instability, when the disk is thicker than a certain value. In the disk thinner than the critical one, the Jeans instability can always suppress the convection. Since the growth rate of the convective instability is proportional to local gravitational acceleration, thereby in the general Galactic gravity, the convective instability works actively only in upper regions, we expect chaotic features to appear in regions of low density far from Galactic mid-plane.  相似文献

An example of the self-consistent solution which belongs to the non-trivial solution, obtained in a previous paper (Kaburaki, 1985), is found in a nearly co-rotating inner magnetosphere. Though the stellar wind is neglected there compared with the co-rotatinal velocity, drift motion around the magnetic axis, which is a manifestation of inertial effects, is determined self-consistently with the electromagnetic field. In this process, explicit expressions for the energy integral in the rotating frame and for the density distribution are also obtained. These expressions contain a fundamental length, which is to be evaluated according to physical conditions of a magnetosphere and determines the asymptotic-kinetic energy of a plasma particle at infinity. The electric current associated with the drift motion is too small to alter the original magnetic field, but the electric field is modified by the inertial effects even in the inner magnetosphere. The integrated Ohm's law is used to describe a force balance in the rotating frame, in the limits of weak and strong magnetic field.  相似文献

We investigate analytically and numerically a nonlinear modification of the magnetospheric plasma density under the action of the ponderomotive force induced by ULF traveling waves, using the nonlinear stationary force balance equation. This equation is applied to both the dipole and dayside magnetosphere having one and two minima of the geomagnetic field near the magnetospheric boundary. The separate and joint actions of the ponderomotive, centrifugal, and gravitational forces on the density distribution are shown.  相似文献

Instabilities produced by finite-resistivity effects in a plasma are of great interest in connection with research in fusion devices, solar flares, and geomagnetic substorms. We elucidate here the physical mechanism of this instability, and in particular, identify the tendencies in the system towards the instability and the tendencies opposing it, if any. As an illustration, we consider the example of the so-called gravitational interchange mode wherein a plasma with a statically stable vertical density gradient is situated in a vertical gravitational field and a sheared horizontal magnetic field. The physical picture developed here may be useful in sorting out phenomena that appear when more subtle properties of the resistive modes in a plasma are considered.  相似文献

Stationary convection of an isotropic, infinitely conducting plasma in a magnetic field with non-trivial geometry is discussed under the assumption that the inertial term in the equation of motion may be ignored. The energy gained or lost by a volume element of plasma per unit time does not vary along the field-lines. Simple relations between the components of the current density, depending on the field-line geometry, exist. Similar relations hold for the components of the plasma velocity. The theoretical analysis is applied to the geomagnetically-quiet plasma sheet and a qualitative physical picture of the sheet is suggested. The observed structure of the sheet is compatible with Axford-Hines type of convection perhaps combined with a low-speed flow from a distant neutral point. The magnetic-field-aligned currents are driven by the deformations of the closed field-lines which are enforced by the solar wind.  相似文献

The inertial effect on the structure of the magnetosphere of a rotating star is investigated, in the corotation approximation for a surrounding quasi-neutral plasma. The equation of motion reduces to a usual static balance equation between the electromagnetic and the centrifugal forces, in the rotating frame. However the MHD condition, which can be regarded as a special form of the generalized Ohm's law, is modified by the inclusion of inertial effect, with a violation of the frozen-in condition in case of a general (i.e., not restricted to corotation) plasma motion. The inertial effect on the electromagnetic field is summarized in a partial scalar potential named the non-Backus potential, which is proportional to the centrifugal potential in the corotation approximation. An approximate solution of this corotation problem is given, in which another characteristic radiusr M appears besides the light radiusr L . This radius defines a distance beyond which the inertial effect becomes dominant over the electromagnetic one, and is useful in estimating the magnitude of the terminal velocity of a centrifugal wind. A few examples of the modification of dipole magnetic field due to the inertial effect are visualized. In an oblique-rotation case, it can be seen that such a warp of the neutral sheet (the surface ofB r =0) is reproduced as observed in the Jovian magnetosphere.  相似文献

A vector theory of electromagnetism and gravitation has indicated a possible equivalence of gravitational energy and electric charge. If true, the resulting electromagnetic and gravitational forces within a stationary, gravitationally collapsed body of radiusR=GM/c 2 are everywhere in balance within the body, if it has a radial mass density distribution proportional to 1/r 2. In addition, radial perturbation of such a body will result in a force imbalance which is restorative. Hence, the equilibrium is stable.  相似文献

We derive the expression for the ponderomotive force in the real multicomponent magnetospheric plasma containing heavy ions. The ponderomotive force considered includes the induced magnetic moment of all the species and arises due to inhomogeneity of the traveling low-frequency electromagnetic wave amplitude in the nonuniform medium. The nonlinear stationary force balance equation is obtained taking into account the gravitational and centrifugal forces for the plasma consisting of the electrons, protons and heavy ions (He+). The background geomagnetic field is taken for the dayside of the magnetosphere, where the magnetic field have magnetic “holes” (Antonova and Shabansky in Geomagn. Aeron. 8:639, 1968). The balance equation is solved numerically to obtain the nonlinear density distribution of ions (H+) in the presence of heavy ions (He+). It is shown that for frequencies less than the helium gyrofrequency at the equator the nonlinear plasma density perturbations are peaked in the vicinity of the equator due to the action of the ponderomotive force. A comparison of the cases of the dipole and dayside magnetosphere is provided. It is obtained that the presence of heavy ions leads to decrease of the proton density modification.  相似文献

The equations of magnetohydrostatic equilibria for a plasma in a gravitational field are investigated analytically. For equilibria with one ignorable spatial coordinate, the equations reduce to a single nonlinear elliptic equation for the magnetic potential A. Similarity solutions of the elliptic equation are obtained for the case of an isothermal atmosphere in a uniform gravitational field. The solutions are obtained from a consideration of the invariance group of the elliptic equation. The importance of symmetries of the elliptic equation also appears in the determination of conservation laws. It turns out that the elliptic equation can be written as a variational principle, and the symmetries of the variational functional lead (via Noether's theorem) to conservation laws for the equation. As an example of the application of the similarity solutions, we construct a model magnetostatic atmosphere in which the current density J is proportional to the cube of the magnetic potential, and falls off exponentially with distance vertical to the base, with an e-folding distance equal to the gravitational scale height. The solutions show the interplay between the gravitational force, the J × B force (B, magnetic field induction) and the gas pressure gradient.  相似文献

An extraneous magnetized body, either a flux tube or a plasmoid, immersed in the solar atmosphere is subjected to a hydromagnetic buoyancy force. It results from the peripheral inhomogeneity of ambient hydromagnetic pressure, which is caused or enhanced by the presence of the extraneous body. This extra-caused force acts at various mass elements of the immersed body through its distribution as a nearly uniform force density, just like the gravitational force. Since hydromagnetic buoyancy force comprises hydrostatic buoyancy force, hydrodynamic lift force, and magnetostatic diamagnetic force, this constitutes a magnetohydrodynamic generalization of Archimedes' principle which deals with hydrostatic buoyancy force. In the solar atmosphere hydromagnetic buoyancy force has an obliquely upward direction, with a component in the direction opposite to the downward gravity. It provides an upward force to counterbalance or even to exceed the downward gravitational force. Such an upward force is the dynamic cause for the stationary equilibrium of quiescent prominences and outward motion of coronal transients.  相似文献

An exact formula is derived for the average frictional force acting upon a ‘test’ star which moves along a prescribed trajectory amongst a collection of ‘field’ stars which are characterized by a Maxwellian distribution of velocities. In the limit that the actual stellar trajectories may be approximated by their average forms, as determined by the mean gravitational field, one obtains a relatively simple expression which establishes an important connection with the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. For the case of an infinite, homogeneous system, one recovers Chandrasekhar's classical result. Alternatively, by allowing for the possibility of nearly periodic motion, one is led to new and intriguing phenomena.  相似文献

We have analyzed the motion of an infinitesimal mass in the restricted four-body problem with solar wind drag. It is assumed that the forces which govern the motion are mutual gravitational attractions of the primaries, radiation pressure force and solar wind drag. We have derived the equations of motion and found the Jacobi integral, zero velocity surfaces, and particular solutions of the system. It is found that three collinear points are real when the radiation factor 0<β<0.1 whereas only one real point is obtained when 0.125<β<0.2. The stability property of the system is examined with the help of Poincaré surface of section (PSS) and Lyapunov characteristic exponents (LCEs). It is found that in presence of drag forces LCE is negative for a specific initial condition, hence the corresponding trajectory is regular whereas regular islands in the PSS are expanded.  相似文献

A completely regular form for the differential equations governing the three-dimensional motion of a continuously thrusting space vehicle is obtained by using the Kustaanheimo-Stiefel regularization. The differential equations for the thrusting rocket are transformed using the K-S transformation and an optimal trajectory problem is posed in the transformed space. The canonical equations for the optimal motion in the transformed space are regularized by a suitable change of the independent variable. The transformed equations are regular in the sense that the differential equations do not possess terms with zero divisors when the motion encounters a gravitational force center. The resulting equations possess symmetry in form and the coefficients of the dependent variables are slowly varying quantities for a low-thrust space vehicle.Presented at the Conference on Celestial Mechanics, Oberwolfach, Germany, August 17–23, 1969.  相似文献

This paper deals with the plane motion of a star in the gravitational field of a system which is in a steady state and rotates with a constant angular velocity. For these systems a class of potentials permitting a local integral, linear with respect to the velocity components, has been found. The concept of the local integral itself was introduced by one of the authors of the present paper (Antonov, 1981). A detailed model has been constructed. The corresponding domain of the particle motion and the form of the trajectory coils have been determined. The result is compared with the motion in a more realistic potential.  相似文献

The dynamics of small surges has been studied using filter and spectral observations in the H line. The surge evolution allows the division into two stages which follows from the observational results. The first stage includes an abrupt H line broadening and the upward acceleration of the surge material. The second one is the inertial motion of the surge plasma along the magnetic force lines. Surges are probably produced by the plasma raking-up which is connected with the growth of the local magnetic field.  相似文献

We suggest that spokes consist of charged micron-sized dust particles elevated from the rings by radially moving dense plasma columns created by meteor impacts on the ring. Dense plasma causes electrostatic wall-sheaths at the ring and charging of the ring with electric fields strong enough to overcome the gravitational force on small dust particles. Under “ordinary” conditions only very few dust particles will be elevated as the probability of a dust particle having at least one excess electronic charge is very low. Dense plasma raises this probability significantly. The radial motion of the plasma column is due to an azimuthal polarization electric field built up by the relative motion between the corotating plasma and the negatively charged dust particles which move with a Keplerian speed.  相似文献
