Although the Harang discontinuity has so far been identified in terms of various phenomena (such as ground magnetic fields, ionospheric currents, auroral features, and electric fields), the loci defined by those different phenomena do not always coincide. It is suggested that the Harang discontinuity may not be a line boundary across which the electric field changes its direction simply from poleward to equatorward, but that the field gradually rotates counterclockwise in a narrow region; thus the westward electric field dominates there. In such a case, no field-aligned current is necessarily required to flow from or into the discontinuity region. This view may be contrasted with the conventional view that an intense upward field-aligned current should flow from the Harang discontinuity. A model is presented in which the poleward ionospheric current (the Hall current resulting from the westward electric field) in the Harang discontinuity region connects the eastward electrojet and the westward electrojet.  相似文献

E-region electron density profiles with high resolution in time and altitude (5 s and 2 km, respectively) measured by the EISCAT incoherent scatter radar are used to examine the conductivity changes during substorm growth, onset and expansion phases for seven substorms occurring in the local evening sector. The measurements are related to electric fields and neutral winds measured by the radar, to ground magnetometer and riometer records, and to optical features, including the westward-travelling surge and auroral bulge. Auroral features are identified using all-sky camera photographs and images from the Viking satellite. Conductances and electric fields in the zone of diffuse aurora corresponding to the westward substorm electrojet are found to be consistent with existing models. Conductances in the discrete auroral arcs marking the expanding edge of the substorm are found to be much higher, and electric fields rather lower, than previously assumed. The magnetic signatures of the discrete arcs are found to be best explained by Hall and Pedersen currents driven by a southward neutral wind, as is observed by the radar. The highest conductances observed, with Hall and Pedersen conductances reaching 120 and 48 S, respectively, are found to be associated with arcs appearing at the southern edge of activity in the vicinity of a westward-travelling surge.  相似文献

Evidence is presented from spectral analysis of Pi2 pulsations detected during a substorm by the University of Alberta meridian chain of magnetometers to support the conclusion that at auroral latitudes there is no apparent correlation between the principal spectral components of Pi2 pulsations and the latitude of the observations. From these data we infer that the Pi2 magnetic variations observed at the Earth's surface are not generated by simple MHD eigenoscillations of magnetospheric field. As well, the data show clear contributions to the Pi2 pulsation spectrum by ionospheric currents. These observations lead to the suggestion that Pi2 pulsation spectra are produced by the sudden changes in magnetospheric and ionospheric current systems which take place at the beginning of a substorm.  相似文献

We propose a model three-dimensional current system for the magnetospheric substorm, which can account for the new findings of the field-aligned and ionospheric currents obtained during the last few years by using new techniques. They include (1) the ionospheric currents at the auroral latitude deduced from the Chatanika incoherent scatter radar data, (2) the field-aligned currents inferred from the vector magnetic field observations by the TRIAD satellite and (3) the global distribution of auroras with respect to the auroral electrojets appearing in DMSP satellite photographs. The model current system is also tested by a computer model calculation of the ionospheric current pattern. It is shown that the auroral electrojets have a strong asymmetry with respect to the midnight meridian. The westward electrojet flows along the discrete aurora in the evening sector, as well as along the diffuse aurora in the morning sector. The eastward electrojet flows equatorward of the westward electrojet in the evening sector. It has a northward component and joins the westward electrojet by turning westward across the Harang discontinuity. Thus, the latitudinal width of the westward electrojet in the morning sector is much larger than that in the evening sector. The field-aligned currents, consisting of two pairs of upward and inward currents (one is located in the morning sector and the other in the evening sector), are closed neither simply by the east-west ionospheric currents nor by the north-south currents, but by a complicated combination of the north-south and east-west paths in the ionosphere. The magnetospheric extension of the current system is also briefly discussed.  相似文献

We discuss the effects in ionospheric absorption of particle precipitation observed in the afternoon-early evening sector during substorms with onset in the midnight sector. All events considered here occurred during magnetically disturbed periods, Kp > 3. For many of the substorm events a smooth southward moving absorption bay is seen in the midnight and evening sectors about 1 h preceeding the onset. The magnetic pulsation activity is low during this preceding bay.

After substorm onset near magnetic midnight the precipitation region may expand with a sharp onset at the front towards the West in spatially confined regions at high and low L-values separately with about equal velocities. The observations are consistent with a model of westward expansion of the energetic electron precipitation in two regions, aligned parallel to the auroral oval, at high and low L-values of about L 6 and L 4.8.

The westward expanding absorption activity correlates well with local magnetic variations. In magnetic pulsations PiB events are seen at high latitudes simultaneously with the westward moving onsets while at low latitudes IPDP pulsations are observed during the active part of the absorption events. Later in the substorm event a slowly varying absorption event (SVA) is sometimes observed at the lower L-values, L 3–4.  相似文献

It is assumed that the three-dimensional current system of a substorm passes three successive stages. (1) When a dawn-to-dusk magnetospheric electric field appears, a current system with field-aligned currents at the poleward boundary of the auroral zone arises. An equivalent ionospheric current system calculated, taking into account a day-night asymmetry of ionospheric conductivity, looks like the well-known DP-2 system including an eastward low-latitude current and a greater magnitude of the dusk vortex in comparison with the dawn one. (2) An electric drift of plasma towards the Earth leads to the appearance of a westward partial ring current increasing in time. This current is closed by field-aligned currents at the equatorward boundary of the auroral zone. The calculated equivalent current system is similar to the well-known one of the precursory phase. (3) An increase of the auroral ionospheric conductivity during the expansive phase produces an increase of all currents and a turning of field-aligned currents at the equatorward boundary of the auroral zone relative to those at the poleward one. The calculated equivalent current system is similar to the DP-1 system.  相似文献

An isolated substorm occurred in Northern Scandinavia on 1 March, 1977 around magnetic midnight. The ionospheric phenomena associated with this substorm were studied by ground magnetometers, the Scandinavian Twin Auroral Radar Experiment (STARE), riometers and an all-sky camera. The physical properties of the auroral electrojet are determined from the ground magnetic field and the ionospheric electric field data. Mid and low latitude magnetic field data show evidence of field-aligned current flow. It is shown that the enhancement of the electrojet's current density is essentially determined by an increase in the ionospheric conductivity. The current system derived from the data of this study corresponds to a model of Yasuhara et al. (1975a).  相似文献

A review of recent experimental results from studies of high latitude Pi 2 pulsations indicates that these pulsations are fundamentally related to the initiation of the auroral breakup and substorm. At high latitudes, the Pi 2's show their peak intensities in the region where the breakup begins and appear to remain in this region after the breakup has spread poleward. In addition, the Pi 2's occur simultaneously with, or before all other ionospheric phenomena associated with the breakup. The field aligned and ionospheric currents associated with the Pi 2 resemble those of a typical substorm, but the ionospheric currents are phase shifted compared to the field aligned current. The periodic oscillations of the Pi 2's are probably caused by a reflection of the initial field aligned current pulse from the auroral ionosphere. This pulse is trapped on dipolar field lines leading to multiple reflections from North and South auroral ionospheres.  相似文献

On 11 November 1976, after a magnetically quiet period with the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) directed northward, a sudden southward turning of the IMF immediately led to a world-wide intensification of convection which was observed to start almost simultaneously at stations within the auroral zone and polar cap. The two-dimensional equivalent current system over the northern hemisphere had a typical two-cell convection pattern with a maximum disturbance of ΔH = ?300 nT observed on the morningside in the westward electrojet region. This enhancement of activity ended after 35 min in a localized substorm onset in the midnight sector over Scandinavia. The recordings made in this area indicate large fluctuations of various ionospheric parameters starting several minutes before the substorm onset. Two subsequent stages can be resolved: (1) high-energy particle precipitation recorded by balloon X-ray detectors and maximum ionospheric current density increase, while the electrojet halfwidth shrinks and the total electrojet current becomes weaker; (2) the maximum ionospheric current density stays constant and the high-energy particle precipitation decreases, while the auroral brightness increases and the total electrojet current and its half-width show a growing trend prior to the final breakup. A suggestion is made that the time interval of these two stages should be called “trigger phase”. A short discussion explains the trigger phase observations in a magnetospheric scale. The energy coupling between solar wind and magnetosphere during the pre-substorm phases is discussed by utilizing the energy coupling function ? defined by Perreault and Akasofu (Geophys. J. R. Astr. Soc.54, 547, 1978). The ? values appear to be on substorm level during the period of enhanced convection. A good correlation between ? and the growth of the Joule heating rate (estimated from the AE data) is found in the beginning, but during the last 20 min before substorm triggering ? is high while the Joule heating rate decreases. The behaviour of ? during the two stages of the trigger phase suggests that the start of the trigger phase is purely internally controlled while the length of the trigger phase and the final substorm onset may be influenced by the variation in ?.  相似文献

The relationship between substorm ionospheric currents and the corresponding ground magnetic perturbations is examined, by using the height-integrated ionospheric current density deduced from the Chatanika incoherent scatter radar and the simultaneous magnetic variations along the Alaska meridian chain of stations. Although time variations of the H component near the radar site on the Earth's surface are in good agreement with those of the east-west ionospheric current, there is a substantial disagreement between the current deduced from the D perturbations and the observed north-south current in the evening sector. It is shown that the disagreement can be removed by introducing a new finding by Yasuhara et al. (1975) that the upward field-aligned current on the poleward side of the auroral oval in the evening sector is more intense than its counterpart fieldaligned current and that it contributes greatly to the ground D perturbations.  相似文献

Equivalent ionospheric current systems representing IMF sector effects on the geomagnetic field in high latitudes are examined for each of the twelve calendar months by spherical harmonic analyses of geomagnetic hourly data at 13 northern polar stations for seven years. The main feature of obtained equivalent current systems includes circular currents at about 80° invariant latitude mostly in the daytime in summer and reversed circular currents at about 70° invariant latitude mainly at night in winter. Field-aligned current distributions responsible for equivalent currents, as well as vector distributions of electric fields and ionospheric currents, are approximated numerically from current functions of equivalent current systems by taking assumed distributions of the ionospheric conductivity. Two sets of upward and downward field-aligned current pairs in the auroral region, and also a field-aligned current region near the pole show seasonal variations. Also, ionospheric electric-field propagation along geomagnetic field lines from the summer hemisphere to the winter hemisphere with auroral Hall-conductivity effects may provide an explanation for the winter reversal of sector effects.  相似文献

On 27 January 1979, three rocket payloads were launched from Kiruna, Sweden into different phases of two successive auroral substorrns. Among other experiments, the payloads carried the RIT double probe electric field experiments providing electric field, electron density and temperature data which are presented here. These data supported by rocket particle observations are discussed mainly in association with ground-based observations (magnetometer, TV) and very briefly with GEOS electric field data. The motions of the auroral forms as obtained from auroral pictures are compared with E × B/B2 drifts and the currents calculated from the rocket electric field and density measurements with the equivalent current system deduced from ground-based magnetometer data (Scandinavian Magnetometer Array).  相似文献

Simultaneous observations of precipitating electrons and protons in the energy range from 15 eV to 35 keV and magnetic field variations were made onboard a sounding rocket payload launched from the Andoya Rocket Range. The electric current density deduced from the electron precipitation observed during the passage over an auroral arc was comparable to that determined from the magnetic field variations. In addition, a downward current was observed by its magnetic field signature at the northern edge of the arc which was, however, not accompanied by significant particle fluxes in the energy range under consideration. It will be assumed that this current was carried by thermal electrons of ionospheric origin.  相似文献

Substorm onsets and intensifications are accompanied on a one-to-one basis by a Pi 2 magnetic pulsation burst. The source region for these pulsations is generally thought to lie in the region of substorm disturbance in the auroral oval. In this paper we outline the characteristics of Pi 2 pulsations in regions near the substorm enhanced electrojet but removed from the locale of the westward travelling surge. We show that a resonance region for the pulsations lies at the equatorwad edge of the westward electrojet, which in the evening sector marks the locus of the Harang discontinuity. Finally we show examples where the maximum amplitude of the Pi 2 is located at or equatorward of the southern border of the eastward electrojet or at the southern border of the westward electrojet. This is clear evidence for the coupling of wave energy into the L-shells far distant from the source of the energy. Mechanisms for Pi 2 generation are discussed in the context of the results presented in this paper.  相似文献

A sounding rocket, launched into the expansive phase of an auroral substorm, measured bursts of electric field oscillations with a typical period of one second and a magnitude exceeding 20 mV/m. The oscillations appear to be due to an MHD wave propagating along the magnetic field. The bursts were observed as the sounding rocket passed over the southern border of an auroral arc. The southern border coincided with an increase in 1–5 keV electron flux and an increase in field-aligned current.  相似文献

It is suggested that the ionosphere plays an active role in many substorm processes by generating field-aligned currents associated with the Hall current. Various substorm phenomena, such as the cross-tail current interruption, the asymmetric main phase field and the poleward expanding auroral bulge, may be closely related to the closure of the Hall current circuits in the magnetosphere.  相似文献

The high-resolution vector magnetograms obtained with the solar telescope magnetograph of the Beijing Astronomical Observatory of the active region AR 4862 on 7 October, 1987, close before and after a solar flare, were used to calculate the electric current densities in the region. Then the relations between the flare and the magnetic fields as well as the electric currents were studied. The results are: (i) the transverse magnetic fields, and hence the longitudinal electric currents in the region before and after the flare, are evidently different, while the longitudinal magnetic fields remain unchanged; (ii) this confirms the result obtained previously that the flare kernels coincide with the peaks of longitudinal electric density in active regions; (iii) the close relation between the flare kernels and the electric currents indicates that the variations of the transverse magnetic fields and the longitudinal electric currents arise not from the general global evolution of the active region, but from the flare. These results tend to the conclusion that the triggering of a solar flare might be related with the plasma instability caused by the surplus longitudinal electric currents at some local regions in the solar atmosphere.  相似文献

The observations of electron inverted ‘V’ structures by the MGS and MEX spacecraft, their resemblance to similar events in the auroral regions of the Earth, and the discovery of strong localized magnetic field sources of the crustal origin on Mars, raised hypotheses on the existence of Martian aurora produced by electron acceleration in parallel electric fields. Following the theory of this type of structures on Earth we perform a scaling analysis to the Martian conditions. Similar to the Earth, upward field-aligned currents necessary for the generation of parallel potential drops and peaked electron distributions can arise, for example, on the boundary between ‘closed’ and ‘open’ crustal field lines due to shears of the flow velocity of the magnetosheath or magnetospheric plasmas. A steady-state configuration assumes a closure of these currents in the Martian ionosphere. Due to much smaller magnetic fields as compared to the Earth case, the ionospheric Pedersen conductivity is much higher on Mars and auroral field tubes with parallel potential drops and relatively small cross scales to be adjusted to the scales of the localized crustal patches may appear only if the magnetosphere and ionosphere are decoupled by a zone with a strong E. Another scenario suggests a periodic short-circuit of the magnetospheric electric fields by a coupling with the conducting ionosphere.  相似文献

The dynamics of the intervals of pulsation of diminishing periods (IPDP) generation region and that of the auroral absorption (AA) are compared. It is known that IPDP is the manifestation of the ion-cyclotron instability due to precipitation and drift of protons and AA is the result of electron precipitation. The westward movement in space and time of the AA and IPDP generation region was revealed. This is the first experimental confirmation of the joint westward drift of the electron and proton in the form of neutral clouds in the magnetosphere during an auroral substorm.  相似文献
