A deep   K s   -band photometric catalogue of galaxies at the core of the rich, nearby Norma cluster (ACO3627) is presented. The survey covers about  45 × 45 arcmin2  (slightly less than 1/3 Abell radius), which corresponds to  ∼0.8  h −270 Mpc2  at the adopted distance  ( v CMB/ H 0)  of  70  h −170 Mpc  of this cluster. The survey is estimated to be complete to a magnitude of     . This extends into the dwarf regime, 6 mag below     . The catalogue contains 390 objects, 235 of which are classified as likely or definite galaxies and 155 as candidate galaxies. The   K s   -band luminosity function (LF) is constructed from the photometric sample, using a spectroscopic subsample to correct for fore and background contamination. We fit a Schechter function with a characteristic magnitude of     and faint-end slope of  α=−1.26 ± 0.10  to the data. The shape of the LF is similar to those found in previous determinations of the cluster LF, in both optical and near-infrared. The Schechter parameters agree well with those of recent field LFs, suggesting that the shape of both the bright-end and the faint-end slopes are relatively insensitive to environment.  相似文献

We present wide-area UBRI photometry for globular clusters around the Leo group galaxy NGC 3379. Globular cluster candidates are selected from their B -band magnitudes and their  ( U − B ) o   versus  ( B − I ) o   colours. A colour–colour selection region was defined from photometry of the Milky Way and M31 globular cluster systems. We detect 133 globular cluster candidates, which supports previous claims of a low specific frequency for NGC 3379.
The Milky Way and M31 reveal blue and red subpopulations, with  ( U − B ) o   and  ( B − I ) o   colours indicating mean metallicities similar to those expected based on previous spectroscopic work. The stellar population models of Maraston and Brocato et al. are consistent with both subpopulations being old, and with metallicities of  [Fe/H]∼−1.5  and −0.6 for the blue and red subpopulations, respectively. The models of Worthey do not reproduce the  ( U − B ) o   colours of the red (metal-rich) subpopulation for any modelled age.
For NGC 3379 we detect a blue subpopulation with similar colours, and presumably age/metallicity, to that of the Milky Way and M31 globular cluster systems. The red subpopulation is less well defined, perhaps due to increased photometric errors, but indicates a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]∼−0.6.  相似文献

We derive deep luminosity functions (LFs) (to   M z =−15  ) for galaxies in Abell 1835  ( z = 0.25)  and AC 114  ( z = 0.31)  , and compare these with the local z ' LF for 69 clusters. The data show that the faint-end upturn, the excess of galaxies above a single Schechter function at   M z < −17  , does not exist in the higher redshift clusters. This suggests that the faint-end upturn galaxies have been created recently, by infall into clusters of star-forming field populations or via tidal disruption of brighter objects.  相似文献

We show that the luminosity functions of the distant rich clusters Abell 665 ( z =0.182) and Abell 963 ( z =0.206) are flat or gradually rising down to MR =−14, with α≈−1.2±0.4 [here α is the logarithmic slope of the luminosity function: φ( L )∝ L α at the faint end]. We do not confirm the steep luminosity functions (α≤−1.8) that have been recently proposed for these two clusters.
Several technical points are discussed in detail. In particular, we compute the corrections to the background contamination caused by gravitational lensing from the cluster dark matter, and show that the corrections are small unless we wish to determine variations in the luminosity function on small scales.
Recent observations have also shown that the field galaxy luminosity function at z ≈0.2 is also shallow between MB =−19 and MB =−13. Abell 665 and 963 are two of the richest clusters known at that redshift. We therefore propose that the galaxy luminosity function might be universal in this magnitude range at z =0.2.
The dwarf galaxies that we see in Abell 665 have a colour distribution that is strongly peaked at B − R =1.9. We compute K -corrections based on the spectral energy distributions of local galaxies, and show that these are probably dwarf spheroidal galaxies. This might suggest that the dwarf spheroidal population observed in Virgo already existed at z =0.2.  相似文献

We present a study of the X-ray emission from the nuclei of galaxies observed in the core of the Perseus cluster in a deep exposure with Chandra . Point sources are found coincident with the nuclei of 13 early-type galaxies, as well as the central galaxy NGC 1275. This corresponds to all galaxies brighter than M B > −18 in the Chandra field. All of these sources have a steep power-law spectral component and four have an additional thermal component. The unabsorbed power-law luminosities in the 0.5–7.0 keV band range from 8 × 1038 to 5 × 1040 erg s−1. We find no simple correlations between the K -band luminosity, or the FUV and NUV AB magnitudes of these galaxies and their X-ray properties. We have estimated the black hole masses of the nuclei using the K -band   M BH– L K bol  relation and again find no correlation between black hole mass and the X-ray luminosity. Bondi accretion on to the black holes in the galaxies with minihaloes should make them much more luminous than observed.  相似文献

We present a catalogue of galaxies in Abell 3653 from observations made with the 2-degree field (2dF) spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Of the 391 objects observed, we find 111 are bona fide members of Abell 3653. We show that the cluster has a velocity of   cz = 32 214 ± 83  km s−1 ( z = 0.10 738 ± 0.00 027)  , with a velocity dispersion typical of rich, massive clusters of  σ cz = 880+66−54  . We find that the cD galaxy has a peculiar velocity of  683 ± 96  km s−1  in the cluster rest frame – some 7σ away from the mean cluster velocity, making it one of the largest and most significant peculiar velocities found for a cD galaxy to date. We investigate the cluster for signs of substructure, but do not find any significant groupings on any length scale. We consider the implications of our findings on cD formation theories.  相似文献

We use the Hubble Ultra Deep Field to study the galaxy luminosity–size  ( M – R e )  distribution. With a careful analysis of selection effects due to both detection completeness and measurement reliability, we identify bias-free regions in the   M – R e   plane for a series of volume-limited samples. By comparison to a nearby survey also having well-defined selection limits, namely the Millennium Galaxy Catalogue, we present clear evidence for evolution in surface brightness since   z ∼ 0.7  . Specifically, we demonstrate that the mean, rest-frame B -band  〈μ〉 e   for galaxies in a sample spanning 8 mag in luminosity between   M B =−22  and −14 mag increases by ∼1.0 mag arcsec−2 from   z ∼ 0.1  to 0.7. We also highlight the importance of considering surface brightness-dependent measurement biases in addition to incompleteness biases. In particular, the increasing, systematic underestimation of Kron fluxes towards low surface brightnesses may cause diffuse, yet luminous, systems to be mistaken for faint, compact objects.  相似文献

An analysis of the environments around a sample of 28 3CR radio galaxies with redshifts 0.6< z <1.8 is presented, based primarily upon K -band images down to K ∼20 taken using the UK Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). A net overdensity of K -band galaxies is found in the fields of the radio galaxies, with the mean excess counts being comparable to that expected for clusters of Abell Class 0 richness. A sharp peak is found in the angular cross-correlation amplitude centred on the radio galaxies that, for reasonable assumptions about the luminosity function of the galaxies, corresponds to a spatial cross-correlation amplitude between those determined for low-redshift Abell Class 0 and 1 clusters.
These data are complemented by J -band images also from UKIRT, and by optical images from the Hubble Space Telescope . The fields of the lower redshift ( z ≲0.9) radio galaxies in the sample generally show well-defined near-infrared colour–magnitude relations with little scatter, indicating a significant number of galaxies at the redshift of the radio galaxy; the relations involving colours at shorter wavelengths than the 4000 Å break show considerably greater scatter, suggesting that many of the cluster galaxies have low levels of recent or on-going star formation. At higher redshifts the colour–magnitude sequences are less prominent owing to the increased field galaxy contribution at faint magnitudes, but there is a statistical excess of galaxies with the very red infrared colours ( J − K ≳1.75) expected of old cluster galaxies at these redshifts.
Although these results are appropriate for the mean of all of the radio galaxy fields, there exist large field-to-field variations in the richness of the environments. Many, but certainly not all, powerful z ∼1 radio galaxies lie in (proto)cluster environments.  相似文献

We present detailed simulations of long-exposure CCD images. The simulations are used to explore the validity of the statistical method for reconstructing the luminosity distribution of galaxies within a rich cluster, i.e., by the subtraction of field number-counts from those of a sight-line through the cluster. In particular, we use the simulations to establish the reliability of our observational data to be presented in Paper III. Based on our intended CCD field-of-view (6.5 × 6.5 arcmin2) and a 1σ detection limit of 26 mag arcsec−2, we conclude that the luminosity distribution can be robustly determined over a wide range of absolute magnitude (−23 <  M R  < −16) provided: (a) the cluster has an Abell richness 1.5 or greater; (b) the redshift of the cluster lies in the range 0.1 <  z  < 0.3; (c) the seeing is better than FWHM 1.25 arcsec, and (d) the photometric zero-points are accurate to within Δ m  = ± 0.12. If these conditions are not met, then the recovered luminosity distribution is unreliable. Finally, although the method clearly has limitations, within these limitations the technique represents an extremely promising probe of galaxy evolution and environmental dependences.  相似文献

Recent spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the Fornax Cluster reveal nearly unresolved 'star-like' objects with redshifts appropriate to the Fornax Cluster. These objects have intrinsic sizes of ≈100 pc and absolute B -band magnitudes in the range  −14< M B<−11.5 mag  and lower limits for the central surface brightness   μ B≳23 mag arcsec−2  , and so appear to constitute a new population of ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs). Such compact dwarfs were predicted to form from the amalgamation of stellar superclusters (by Kroupa) , which are rich aggregates of young massive star clusters (YMCs) that can form in collisions between gas-rich galaxies. Here we present the evolution of superclusters in a tidal field. The YMCs merge on a few supercluster crossing times. Superclusters that are initially as concentrated and massive as knot S in the interacting Antennae galaxies evolve to merger objects that are long-lived and show properties comparable to the newly discovered UCDs. Less massive superclusters resembling knot 430 in the Antennae may evolve to ω Cen-type systems. Low-concentration superclusters are disrupted by the tidal field, dispersing their surviving star clusters while the remaining merger objects rapidly evolve into the   μ B− M B  region populated by low-mass Milky Way dSph satellites.  相似文献

We present luminosity and surface-brightness distributions of 40 111 galaxies with K -band photometry from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS), Data Release 3 and optical photometry from Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Various features and limitations of the new UKIDSS data are examined, such as a problem affecting Petrosian magnitudes of extended sources. Selection limits in K - and r -band magnitude, K -band surface brightness and K -band radius are included explicitly in the  1/ V max  estimate of the space density and luminosity function. The bivariate brightness distribution in K -band absolute magnitude and surface brightness is presented and found to display a clear luminosity–surface brightness correlation that flattens at high luminosity and broadens at low luminosity, consistent with similar analyses at optical wavelengths. Best-fitting Schechter function parameters for the K -band luminosity function are found to be   M *− 5 log  h =−23.19 ± 0.04, α=−0.81 ± 0.04  and  φ*= (0.0166 ± 0.0008)  h 3 Mpc−3  , although the Schechter function provides a poor fit to the data at high and low luminosity, while the luminosity density in the K band is found to be   j = (6.305 ± 0.067) × 108 L  h  Mpc−3  . However, we caution that there are various known sources of incompleteness and uncertainty in our results. Using mass-to-light ratios determined from the optical colours, we estimate the stellar mass function, finding good agreement with previous results. Possible improvements are discussed that could be implemented when extending this analysis to the full LAS.  相似文献

The evolution of the abundance of galaxy clusters depends sensitively on the value of the cosmological density parameter, Ω0. Recent ASCA data are used to quantify this evolution as measured by the cluster X-ray temperature function. A χ2 minimization fit to the cumulative temperature function, as well as a maximum-likelihood estimate (which requires additional assumptions about cluster luminosities), leads to the estimate Ω0 ≈ 0.45 ± 0.25 (1σ statistical error). Various systematic uncertainties are considered, none of which significantly enhances the probability that Ω0 = 1. These conclusions hold for models with or without a cosmological constant, i.e., with Λ0 = 0 or Λ0 = 1 − Ω0. The statistical uncertainties are at least as large as any of the individual systematic errors that have been considered here, suggesting that additional temperature measurements of distant clusters will allow an improvement in this estimate. An alternative method that uses the highest redshift clusters to place an upper limit on Ω0 is also presented and tentatively applied, with the result that Ω0  1 can be ruled out at the 98 per cent confidence level. Whilst this method does not require a well-defined statistical sample of distant clusters, there are still modelling uncertainties that preclude a firmer conclusion at this time.  相似文献

We have used far-infrared data from IRAS , Infrared Space Observatory ( ISO ), Spitzer Wide-Area Infrared Extragalactic (SWIRE), Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) and Max-Planck Millimetre Bolometer (MAMBO) to constrain statistically the mean far-infrared luminosities of quasars. Our quasar compilation at redshifts  0 < z < 6.5  and I -band luminosities  −20 < I AB < −32  is the first to distinguish evolution from quasar luminosity dependence in such a study. We carefully cross-calibrate IRAS against Spitzer and ISO , finding evidence that IRAS 100-μm fluxes at <1 Jy are overestimated by ∼30 per cent. We find evidence for a correlation between star formation in quasar hosts and the quasar optical luminosities, varying as star formation rate (SFR)  ∝ L 0.44±0.07opt  at any fixed redshift below   z = 2  . We also find evidence for evolution of the mean SFR in quasar host galaxies, scaling as  (1 + z )1.6±0.3  at   z < 2  for any fixed quasar I -band absolute magnitude fainter than −28. We find no evidence for any correlation between SFR and black hole mass at  0.5 < z < 4  . Our data are consistent with feedback from black hole accretion regulating stellar mass assembly at all redshifts.  相似文献

We compare two methods of distance determination to spiral galaxies using optical/near-infrared (NIR) observations, the ( I − K ) versus M K colour–absolute magnitude (CM) relation and the I - and K -band Tully–Fisher relation (TFR).
Dust-free colours and NIR absolute magnitudes greatly enhance the usefulness of the NIR CM relation as a distance indicator for moderately to highly inclined spiral galaxies in the field (inclinations between ∼80° and 90°); by avoiding contamination by dust the scatter in the CM relation is significantly reduced, compared with similar galaxy samples published previously. The CM relation can be used to determine distances to field spiral galaxies with M K >−25.5, to at least M K ≈−20.
Our results, supplemented with previously published observations for which we can – to some degree – control the effects of extinction, are consistent with a universal nature of the CM relation for field spiral galaxies.
High-resolution observations made with the Hubble Space Telescope can provide a powerful tool to calibrate the relation and extend the useful distance range by more than a factor of 2 compared with ground-based observations.
The intrinsic scatter in the NIR CM relation in the absolute K -band magnitudes is ∼0.5 mag, yielding a lower limit to the accuracy of distance determinations of the order of 25 per cent.
Although we find an unusually low scatter in the TFR (probably a statistical accident), a typical scatter in the TFR would yield distances to our sample galaxies with uncertainties of only ∼15 per cent. However, one of the main advantages of the use of the NIR CM relation is that we need only photometric data to obtain distance estimates; use of the TFR requires additional kinematic data, although it can be used to significantly greater distances.  相似文献

We present the results of a search for strong H α emission line galaxies (rest frame equivalent widths greater than 50 Å) in the z ≈0.23 cluster Abell 2390. The survey contains 1189 galaxies over 270 arcmin2, and is 50 per cent complete at M r ≈−17.5+5 log  h . The fraction of galaxies in which H α is detected at the 2 σ level rises from 0.0 in the central regions (excluding the cD galaxy) to 12.5±8 per cent at R 200. For 165 of the galaxies in our catalogue, we compare the H α equivalent widths with their [O  ii ] λ 3727 equivalent widths, from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC1) spectra. The fraction of strong H α emission line galaxies is consistent with the fraction of strong [O  ii ] emission galaxies in the CNOC1 sample: only 2±1 per cent have no detectable [O  ii ] emission and yet significant (>2 σ ) H α equivalent widths. Dust obscuration, non-thermal ionization, and aperture effects are all likely to contribute to this non-correspondence of emission lines. We identify six spectroscopically 'secure' k+a galaxies [ W 0(O  ii )<5 Å and W 0(H δ )≳5 Å]; at least two of these show strong signs in H α of star formation in regions that are covered by the slit from which the spectra were obtained. Thus, some fraction of galaxies classified as k+a based on spectra shortward of 6000 Å are likely to be undergoing significant star formation. These results are consistent with a 'strangulation' model for cluster galaxy evolution, in which star formation in cluster galaxies is gradually decreased, and is neither enhanced nor abruptly terminated by the cluster environment.  相似文献

We produce and analyse u -band (  λ≈ 355  nm) luminosity functions (LFs) for the red and blue populations of galaxies using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) u -band Galaxy Survey ( u GS) and Deep Evolutionary Exploratory Probe 2 (DEEP2) survey. From a spectroscopic sample of 41 575 SDSS u GS galaxies and 24 561 DEEP2 galaxies, we produce colour magnitude diagrams and make use of the colour bimodality of galaxies to separate red and blue populations. LFs for eight redshift slices in the range  0.01 < z < 1.2  are determined using the  1/ V max  method and fitted with Schechter functions showing that there is significant evolution in   M *  , with a brightening of 1.4 mag for the combined population. The integration of the Schechter functions yields the evolution in the u -band luminosity density (LD) out to   z ∼ 1  . By parametrizing the evolution as  ρ∝ (1 + z )β  , we find that  β= 1.36 ± 0.2  for the combined populations and  β= 2.09 ± 0.2  for the blue population. By removing the contribution of the old stellar population to the u -band LD and correcting for dust attenuation, we estimate the evolution in the star formation rate (SFR) of the Universe to be  βSFR= 2.5 ± 0.3  . Discrepancies between our result and higher evolution rates measured using the infrared and far-UV can be reconciled by considering possibilities such as an underestimated dust correction at high redshifts or evolution in the stellar initial mass function.  相似文献

We present the results of a continuing survey to detect Lyα emitting galaxies at redshifts   z ∼ 9  : the ' z equals nine' (ZEN) survey. We have obtained deep VLT Infrared Spectrometer and Array Camera observations in the narrow J -band filter NB119 directed towards three massive lensing clusters: Abell clusters 1689, 1835 and 114. The foreground clusters provide a magnified view of the distant Universe and permit a sensitive test for the presence of very high redshift galaxies. We search for   z ∼ 9 Lyα  emitting galaxies displaying a significant narrow-band excess relative to accompanying J -band observations that remain undetected in Hubble Space Telescope ( HST )/Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) optical images of each field. No sources consistent with this criterion are detected above the unlensed 90 per cent point-source flux limit of the narrow-band image,   F NB= 3.7 × 10−18 erg s−1 cm−2  . To date, the total coverage of the ZEN survey has sampled a volume at   z ∼ 9  of approximately 1700 comoving Mpc3 to a Lyα emission luminosity of  1043 erg s−1  . We conclude by considering the prospects for detecting   z ∼ 9 Lyα  emitting galaxies in light of both observed galaxy properties at   z < 7  and simulated populations at   z > 7  .  相似文献

The X-ray properties of a sample of 11 high-redshift  (0.6 < z < 1.0)  clusters observed with Chandra and/or XMM–Newton are used to investigate the evolution of the cluster scaling relations. The observed evolution in the normalization of the   L – T , M – T , M g– T   and M – L relations is consistent with simple self-similar predictions, in which the properties of clusters reflect the properties of the Universe at their redshift of observation. Under the assumption that the model of self-similar evolution is correct and that the local systems formed via a single spherical collapse, the high-redshift L – T relation is consistent with the high- z clusters having virialized at a significantly higher redshift than the local systems. The data are also consistent with the more realistic scenario of clusters forming via the continuous accretion of material.
The slope of the L – T relation at high redshift  ( B = 3.32 ± 0.37)  is consistent with the local relation, and significantly steeper than the self-similar prediction of   B = 2  . This suggests that the same non-gravitational processes are responsible for steepening the local and high- z relations, possibly occurring universally at   z ≳ 1  or in the early stages of the cluster formation, prior to their observation.
The properties of the intracluster medium at high redshift are found to be similar to those in the local Universe. The mean surface-brightness profile slope for the sample is  β= 0.66 ± 0.05  , the mean gas mass fractions within   R 2500( z )  and   R 200( z )  are  0.069 ± 0.012  and  0.11 ± 0.02  , respectively, and the mean metallicity of the sample is  0.28 ± 0.11 Z  .  相似文献

We present CCD photometry in the Washington system C and T 1 passbands down to   T 1∼ 22  in the fields of L35, L45, L49, L50, L62, L63 and L85, seven poorly studied star clusters in the inner region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We measured T 1 magnitudes and   C − T 1  colours for a total of 114 826 stars distributed throughout cluster areas of 13.7 × 13.7 arcmin2 each. Cluster radii were estimated from star counts distributed throughout the entire observed fields. The seven clusters are generally characterized by a relatively small angular size and by a high field star contamination. We performed an in-depth analysis of the field star contamination of the colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs), and statistically cleaned the cluster CMDs. Based on the best fits of isochrones computed by the Padova group to the  ( T 1,  C − T 1)  CMDs, we derive ages for the sample, assuming Z = 0.004, finding ages between 25 Myr and 1.2 Gyr. We then examined different relationships between positions in the SMC, age and metallicity of a larger sample of clusters including our previous work whose ages and metallicities are on the same scale used in this paper. We confirm previous results in the sense that the further a cluster is from the centre of the galaxy, the older and more metal poor it is, with some dispersion; although clusters associated with the Magellanic Bridge clearly do not obey the general trend. The number of clusters within ∼ 2° of the SMC centre appears to have increased substantially after ∼2.5 Gyr ago, hinting at a burst.  相似文献

We present CCD BVI photometry of the old open cluster Berkeley 21, one of the most distant clusters in the Galactic anticentre direction, and possibly the lowest metallicity object in the open clusters sample. Its position and metal abundance make it very important for the study of the Galactic disc. Using the synthetic colour–magnitude diagram method, we estimate values for the distance modulus ( m  − M )0 = 13.4–13.6, reddening E ( B  −  V ) = 0.74–0.78 (with possible differential absorption), and age = 2.2–2.5 Gyr.  相似文献
