南印度洋中尺度涡统计特征及三维合成结构研究   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
南印度洋是海洋中尺度涡的多发区域。本文利用卫星高度计资料及Argo浮标资料,对南印度洋(10°~35°S, 50°~120°E)区域中尺度涡的分布、表观特征等进行了统计分析,采用合成方法,构建了该区域中尺度涡的三维温盐结构。结果表明,涡旋频率呈明显的纬向带状分布,在18°~30°S存在一个明显的涡旋频率带状高值区;涡旋半径具有由南至北逐渐增大的趋势;长周期涡旋在其生命周期内,半径、涡动能、涡能量密度、涡度等性质均经历了先增大而后减小的过程;涡旋以西向运动为主,在经向上移动距离较小,长周期气旋(反气旋)涡具有明显的偏向极地(赤道)移动的倾向;涡旋平均移动速度为5.9 cm/s,速度大小大致沿纬向呈带状分布。在混合层以下,气旋涡(反气旋涡)内部分别呈现明显的温度负(正)异常,且分别存在两个位温负(正)异常的冷(暖)核结构;气旋涡(反气旋涡)整体上呈现"正-负"("负-正")上下层相反的盐度异常结构。中尺度涡对温盐的平均影响深度可达1 000×104 Pa以上。  相似文献

The transfer of upper kilometer water from the Indian Ocean into the South Atlantic, the Agulhas leakage, is believed to be accomplished primarily through meso-scale eddy processes. There have been various studies investigating eddies of the “Cape Basin Cauldron” from specific data sets. The hydrographic data archive acquired during the last century within the Cape Basin region of the South Atlantic provides additional insight into the distribution and water mass properties of the Cape Basin eddies. Eddies are identified by mid-thermocline isopycnal depth anomalies relative to the long-term mean. Positive depth anomalies (the reference isopycnal is deeper than the long-term mean isopycnal depth) mark the presence of anticyclonic eddies; negative anomalies mark cyclonic eddies. Numerous eddies are identified in the whole region; the larger isopycnal displacements are attributed to the energetic eddies characteristic of the Cape Basin and indicate that there is a 2:1 anticyclone/cyclone ratio. Smaller displacements of the less energetic features are almost equally split between anticyclones and cyclones (1.4:1 ratio). Potential temperature, salinity and oxygen relationships at thermocline and intermediate levels within each eddy reveal their likely origin. The eddy core water is not solely drawn from Indian Ocean: tropical and subtropical South Atlantic water are also present. Anticyclones and cyclones carrying Agulhas Water properties are identified throughout the Cape Basin. Anticyclones with Agulhas Water characteristics show a predominant northwest dispersal, whereas the cyclones are identified mainly along the western margin of the African continent, possibly related to their origin as shear eddies at the boundary between the Agulhas axis and Africa. Cyclones and anticyclones carrying pure South Atlantic origin water are identified south of 30°S and west of the Walvis Ridge. Tropical Atlantic water at depth is found for cyclones north of the Walvis Ridge, west of 10°E and for stations deeper than 4000 m, and a few anticyclones with the same characteristics are found south of the ridge.  相似文献

The statistical characteristics and vertical thermohaline properties of mesoscale eddies in the Bay of Bengal are studied from the view of satellite altimetry data and Argo profiles. Eddy propagation preferences in different lifetimes, eddy evolution process, and geographical distribution of eddy kinetic properties are analyzed in this area. Eddies exist principally in the western Bay of Bengal, and most of them propagate westward. There is a clear southward(equatorward) preference for eddies with long lifetimes, especially for cyclones. Moreover, the eddies in different areas of the bay show different north-southward preferences. Evolution of eddy kinetic properties with lifetime shows that eddies have the significant three-stage feature: the growth period in the former one-fifth lifetime, the stable period in the middle two-fifth to four-fifth lifetime, and the dying period in the last one-fifth lifetime. Large-amplitude and high-intensity eddies occur only in the relatively confined regions of highly unstable currents, such as the East Indian Coastal Current and eastern Sri Lanka. Based on Argo profile data and climatology data, the eddy synthesis method was used to construct three-dimensional temperature and salt structures of eddies in this area. The mean temperature anomaly is negative/positive to the cyclonic/anticyclonic eddies in the upper 300×10~4 Pa, and below this depth, the anomaly becomes weak. The salinity structures of positive anomalies inside cyclonic eddies and negative anomalies inside anticyclonic eddies in the Bay of Bengal are not consistent with other regions. Due to the special characteristics of the water mass in the bay, especially under the control of the low-salinity Bay of Bengal water at the surface and the Indian equatorial water in the deep ocean, the salinity of seawater shows a monotonic increase with depth. For regional varieties of temperature and salinity structures, as the eddies move westward, the temperature anomaly induced by the eddies increases, the effecting depth of the eddies deepens, and the salinity structures are more affected by inflows. In the north-south direction, the salinity structures of the eddies are associated with the local water masses, which comprise lowsalinity water in the northern bay due to the inflow of freshwater from rivers and salty water in the southern bay due to the invasion of Arabian Sea high-salinity water from the north Indian Ocean.  相似文献

Data on bottom-water potential temperature, turbidity and current indications show that in the Southern Ocean west of the Kerguelen Plateau, Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) of Weddell Sea origin spreads northwards from the Atlantic—Indian Basin in two directions: (1) AABW enters the Agulhas Basin through relatively deep areas in the Mid-Indian Ridge at 20–25°E and possibly at 35°E, and flows northwards into the Mozambique Basin as far as its northern limits; (2) a more easterly spreading path extends from the Atlantic—Indian Basin through the Crozet into the Madagascar, Mascarene, Somali and Arabian Basins. The passage in the western branch of the Indian Ridge for the AABW spreading from the Crozet into the Madagascar Basin appears to be at 29-26°S and 60–64°E.East of the Kerguelen Plateau in the South Indian Basin, the bottom water formed mainly along the Adélie Coast and Ross Sea travels west towards the Kerguelen Plateau and then parallel to it. This water finally flows eastwards hugging the Southeast Indian Ridge. Significant deviations from this general circulation pattern occur due to local topographic effects. Some AABW in the South Indian Basin exits through a passage at 120–125°E in the region of the Australian—Antarctic discordance in the Southeast Indian Ridge and enters the South Australian Basin and subsequently the Wharton Basin. This passage is clearly indicated by the northward extension of a cold, bottom-water tongue as shown by the temperature distribution in the region; the bottom-water effects in the passage are reflected in the high turbidity and current lineations on the sea floor.In the Southern Ocean basins, bottom-water turbidity is generally high, reflecting in part the strong bottom-water activity. The effects of AABW circulation on the sea floor—in the form of well-developed small- or large-scale current ripples and erosional/depositional features, manganese-nodule formations, and unconformities and reworking of sediments observed in cores — are also marked in these basins. Even though the AABW in the Wharton Basin is cold, its spreading effects on the sea floor are minimal in this basin in contrast to the basins west of the Mid-Indian Ridge at comparable latitudes.  相似文献

Similarities in the marine fauna found off the coasts of southern Madagascar and KwaZulu-Natal Province (KZN), South Africa, led to the development of the ‘suitcase project,’ with the aim of establishing whether eddies that form off southern Madagascar may package and transport biological material across the Mozambique Channel, facilitating connectivity and gene flow. Meroplankton (larval stages of fishes and benthic invertebrates) were collected on the Madagascan shelf and along a transect through a cyclonic eddy in the Mozambique Channel. The samples were analysed using microscopy and DNA barcoding, seeking to identify species known to be common to both the southeast coast of Madagascar and the east coast of South Africa and thereby to reveal potential indicators of connectivity between these regions. The greatest zooplankton biovolume in the upper 200 m occurred on the shelf, followed by in the western part of the eddy and in the region outside the eddy to the west, and was lowest in the region outside the eddy to the east. The meroplankton were dominated by taxa of coastal origin and these were also most abundant on the shelf and in the western part of the eddy, with the lowest abundances in the region outside the eddy to the east. The findings show greater zooplankton biovolumes and larval abundances and the presence of reef-associated larval assemblages on the Madagascan shelf and along the transect through the cyclonic eddy, providing support for the suitcase hypothesis that planktonic organisms are entrained within eddies as they propagate south-westwards of the Madagascan shelf.  相似文献

An unusual region of high meso-scale turbulence has been identified in the Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean. It has been shown that this is the result of eddy shedding from the Antarctic Polar Front. These eddies may dramatically affect the local distribution of marine organisms. To investigate this, the euphausiid community structure and species composition in the region of a cold eddy within the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone (APFZ) was investigated during April 2005. Water masses within the core of the eddy were typically Antarctic, showing they had come from south of the Antarctic Polar Front. Results of numerical analyses indicate that the euphausiid community within the survey area consisted of three distinct groups: those in APFZ waters, those at the edge of the eddy and those in the core of the eddy. These results indicate that eddies generated by the interaction of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current with the South-West Indian Ridge play an important role in transporting Antarctic euphausiid species equatorward, thus contributing to the spatial heterogeneity of the zooplankton community within the region.  相似文献

The 26th Chinese COMRA (China Ocean Mineral Resources Research & Development Association) cruise was an important cruise. The Carlsberg Ridge (CR) of the Northwest Indian Ocean and the North Atlantic Ridge (NAR), in which less investigation has been carried out for hydrothermal activities, were investigated and studied during the first two legs of the 26th COMRA cruise. During the first leg, we found one hydrothermal activity field located in the CR at 3.5 -3.8 N on the Northwest Indian Ocean Ridge (NWIR), and sampled seafloor polymetallic sulfide deposits where only abnormalities were found before. During the second leg, we found a new hydrothermal anomaly field located in the NAR at 4 -7 N. The discovery of two hydrothermal and anomaly fields filled in the gap of hydrothermal investigation and study in the corresponding regions for China.  相似文献

A new species of lanternshark, Etmopterus alphus (Squaliformes: Etmopteridae), is described from the south-western Indian Ocean. The new species resembles other members of the ‘Etmopterus lucifer’ clade in having linear rows of dermal denticles and most closely resembles E. molleri from the south-western Pacific. The new species is fairly common along the upper continental slopes off central Mozambique, at depths between 472 and 558?m, and is also found on the southern Madagascar Ridge in 650–792?m depth. It can be distinguished from other members of the E. lucifer clade by a combination of characteristics, including arrangement of flank and caudal markings, dimension of flank markings and shape, size and arrangement of dermal denticles along the body. Molecular analysis further supports the distinction of E. alphus from other members of the E. lucifer clade.  相似文献

本文主要利用1958–2016年GECCO2等资料通过超前/滞后相关分析方法,分析了南印度洋海表温度距平(SSTA)冬季?冬季重现的时空特征,并探讨了海洋和大气强迫对其形成的贡献。结果显示,SSTA冬季?冬季重现主要发生在南印度洋15oS以南海域,特别是在马达加斯加岛至澳大利亚西南部之间的海域(15o~45oS,70o~100oE)重现信号最为显著。重现信号除了主要发生在次年冬季外,在部分海域重现信号发生较早,可在次年秋季发生并持续至随后的冬季。进一步分析表明,混合层深度冬深夏浅的变化(即海洋重现机制)是研究海域SSTA冬季重现的主因。另外,在马达加斯加岛南部海域和澳大利亚西南部海域海面净热通量对SSTA的重现也有直接的贡献。  相似文献

Some seismic refraction observations undertaken during the IGY are reported here together with a summary of other refraction studies carried out within the Transkei Basin, the Mozambique Ridge and the South African continental shelf area.A 2.5 km section of Cretaceous and younger rocks is associated with profiles observed on the continental shelf; directly below this group are rocks with velocities in the range 4.0–5.5 km s-1, probably representatives of the Karroo and Cape supergroups. The basement material velocity variations were from 5.3 to 6.5 with an average of 5.9 km s-1, and is correlated with granite or Malmesbury Formation plus granite. This crustal structure is similar to that found on the eastern continental shelf of southern South America.The profiles in the Transkei Basin show a thick layer of sediment with velocity range 1.50 to 3.50 km s-1, underlain by a refracting layer in which the average velocity is 4.5 km s-1. The velocity of 6.6 km s-1 obtained for the oceanic layer is similar to the velocities of the crustal layer measured in the Argentine Basin. The mantle velocity (8.1 km s-1) is consistent with the average mantle velocity for the Indian Ocean but significantly lower than the Pacific Ocean average of 8.20 km s-1. The depth to Moho is about 12.0 km and the crustal section is typical oceanic. A plate tectonic model of the early opening of the South Atlantic is used to describe the evolution of the Transkei Basin.On the Mozambique Ridge the thin sediments (0.7 km) are underlain by rocks with velocities averaging 5.6 km s-1. This is more than 1.0 km s-1 faster than the velocity for layer 2 from the Transkei Basin and the Agulhas Plateau, indicating rocks of a younger age or of a different type. Moreover the crustal section of the Ridge has a thickness in excess of 22 km and is in isostatic equilibrium when compared with the adjacent Transkei Basin and Agulhas Plateau. DSDP site 249, situated on the Ridge, penetrated basalt at a depth of 0.4 km. Whether this is continental or oceanic basalt is not known; when this site 249 basalt was compared to the cored basalts of the adjacent Mozambique Basin, inconclusive results were obtained. The essential constitution of the Mozambique Ridge remains an enigma, but solution of this problem is vital for the proper understanding of the Mesozoic history of this oceanic region.  相似文献

The northern Mascarene Basin, lying between Madagascar and the Seychelles Plateau in the north-west Indian Ocean, is marked at its north-western end by the Amirante Arc, an enigmatic ridge-trench complex superficially resembling an island arc. Structural trends in the area have been mapped using GLORIA sidescan sonar data, seismic reflection profiles and bathymetric maps. It is concluded that the north-west Mascarene Basin was created during the Late Cretaceous by sea-floor spreading about a north-west trending spreading axis cut by northeast trending transform faults. A major transform fault between the northern tip of Madagascar and the western margin of the Seychelles Plateau is proposed as a boundary between the Late Cretaceous Mascarene basin and the older Somali Basin to the north-west. The northern segment of the Amirante Ridge may mark part of the transform. The southern segment of the Ridge and its associated trench are, however, wholly contained within the Late Cretaceous ocean floor of the Mascarene Basin, and are best explained as compressional features related to a change in sea-floor spreading geometry in the Late Cretaceous or earliest Tertiary. Two models for the evolution of the Mascarene Basin are proposed, the major differences between them being the amount of subduction at the southern Amirante Arc and the timing of the initial separation between India and the Seychelles.  相似文献

本文利用Argo盐度、SODA海流量、OAFlux蒸发量和TRMM降水量等数据,采用盐度收支方程定量给出了印度洋混合层盐度的收支,揭示了整个印度洋净淡水通量项、平流项、垂向卷夹项的分布、季节变化特征及其对混合层盐度变化的主要贡献。结果表明,就多年平均而言,平流项负贡献(15.14%)大于正贡献(9.89%),说明平流输送把低盐水输送到高盐海域,导致印度洋高盐海域混合层的盐度降低。净淡水通量项的分布和季节变化与降水量基本一致,且正贡献(13.70%)大于负贡献(7.81%),说明净淡水通量项使印度洋的混合层盐度升高(因为多年平均蒸发量大于降水量)。盐度季节变化显著海域的进一步分析表明,6?11月,西南季风漂流把赤道西印度洋的低盐水(相对阿拉伯海高盐水而言)输送到阿拉伯海西部海域,导致该海域的盐度降低。平流输送把孟加拉湾湾口和中部的高盐水带到北部海域,是导致北部海域盐度升高的主要原因。  相似文献

本文基于海洋环流模式模拟的高分辨率欧拉场,利用拉格朗日追踪方法,评估了印尼贯穿流(ITF)对印度洋的热量贡献。通过计算ITF水体在印度洋的传输路径及伴随的温度变化来获取ITF水体在印度洋的热量传输过程。模拟结果表明ITF进入印度洋后主要向西流动并在到达马达加斯加后分叉,进入南、北印度洋。热收支分析表明ITF在北印度洋吸收0.41 PW热量,在南印度洋释放0.56 PW热量;这两个过程相互补偿,导致ITF对整个印度洋的净加热贡献并不显著,只有0.15 PW。进一步的检查ITF离开印度洋的出口(跨过34°S),结果表明ITF主要随着位于西边界的奥古拉斯流和位于东边界的利文流离开印度洋。约89%的ITF水体沿着西边界离开印度洋,其余的11%主要沿着东边界离开印度洋;前者对整个印度洋的净加热贡献为0.10 PW,后者的净加热贡献为0.05 PW。  相似文献

Monsoon driven water mass exchange between the Bay of Bengal(Bo B) and Arabian Sea(AS) is the common experience. However, it is not yet firmly confirmed that the exchange pathway is either passing through southern tip of Sri Lanka or Palk Strait. Local circulation patterns impact the pathways followed by the East Indian Coastal Currents(EICC) that drive exchange, thereby modulating mixing and water mass transformation in the Bay of Bengal around Sri Lanka. In this study, observations from surface drifters were incorporated with the satellite derived data to understand the monsoonal impact on circulation patterns in the Indian Ocean. This was the first multi-national scientific effort which was conducted in the Bo B and AS during 2013 to 2015 to understand the monsoonal impact on circulation patterns in the complex region. The results indicated that seasonally reversing monsoonal currents of southern Sri Lanka, traced by the wintertime freshwater export pathways of the EICC. The deflection of monsoon currents running along the east coast of Sri Lanka by forming cyclonic and anti-cyclonic eddies, which influence the mixing and stirring associated with these flows. Results further indicate the low salinity cold water flows from the Bo B to AS along the western boundary of the Bo B during northeast monsoon. In the same way, reverses the phenomena during southwest monsoon, transporting high salinity warm water from AS to the Bo B. This maintain the bay status which occurred due to freshwater influx from large rivers and high saline water from AS. However, no evidences were observed for the exchange through Palk Strait during the study.Also, there are some mis-matches in in-situ and remotely sensed measurements which imply the necessity of systematic observation system for the complex region as an alternative approach.  相似文献

Cruise observations with CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) profiler were carried out in the southern Taiwan Strait in the summer of 2005. Using the cruise data, two-dimensional maps of salinity and temperature distributions at depths of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 m were generated. The maps show a low salinity tongue sandwiched by low temperature and high salinity waters on the shallow water side and high temperature and high salinity waters on the deep water side. The further analysis indicates that the low salinity water has a nature of river-diluted water. A possible source of the diluted water is the Zhujiang (Pearl) Estuary. Meanwhile, the summer monsoon is judged as a possible driving force for this northeastward jet-like current. The coastal upwelling and the South China Sea Warm Current confine the low salinity water to flow along the central line of the strait. Previous investigations and a numerical model are used to verify that the upstream of the low salinity current is the Zhujiang Estuary. Thus, the low salinity tongue is produced by four major elements:Zhujinag Estuary diluted water, monsoon wind driving, coastal upwelling and South China Sea Warm Current modifications.  相似文献

Red Sea Intermediate Water (RSIW) has been shown to move down the Agulhas Current as distinct lenses. It has been assumed that this intermittency is the result of variable input. To clarify and quantify the nature of RSIW contributions from the source regions of the Agulhas Current observations at 15 hydrographic sections were examined using a multi-parameter analysis. In the northern Mozambique Channel RSIW is found to be layer-like, but with patches of distinctly different contributions. In the southern part of the channel the layer-like distribution disappears with RSIW mostly confined within anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies exhibiting varying maximum contributions ranging from 15–20% to 25–30% purity. Net transports across the channel ranged from ?0.45 to ?0.7 Sv. At the southern tip of Madagascar RSIW contributions exhibited similar purity variability ranging from 10–15% to 15–20%. The net southward transport of RSIW in the East Madagascar Current displayed an even greater variability due to changes in the flux of the undercurrent ranging from negligible to ?0.3 Sv. Indications therefore were that the transport of RSIW to the Agulhas Current occurs in both cyclones and anti-cyclones through the Mozambique Channel whilst from the East Madagascar Current it is mostly confined to anti-cyclones. This variability in the inflow was also reflected in the northern part of the Agulhas Current proper. The maximum contributions of RSIW range here from 10–15% to 20–25% purity and net transports from ?0.75 to ?1.39 Sv off Durban. As it was east of Madagascar RSIW was mostly confined to the slope.  相似文献

In recent years, large anticyclonic eddies have been observed quasi-annually in the region seaward of Kodiak Island, Alaska. In situ sampling in 3 of these eddies was undertaken in 2002, 2003, and 2004. Satellite altimetry data showed that these 3 eddies had 3 different formation regions but their translation pathways were similar near Kodiak Island. Eddies in this region can persist for several years, moving southwestward along the Alaskan Peninsula to the Aleutian Archipelago. Water properties in the cores of the 2003 and 2004 eddies were significantly different from each other, probably because the 2003 eddy formed on the shelf near Yakutat while the 2004 eddy formed farther out in the basin in the northern Gulf of Alaska. Calculation of heat, salinity, and nutrient anomalies associated with the eddies showed that, in their subsurface core waters, the eddies carry excess heat, salt, nitrate and silicic acid seaward from the eddy formation regions.  相似文献

During years 2003 and 2004 both Sedlo and Seine Seamounts, lying in the area of influence of the Mediterranean water outflow in the Northeast Atlantic, were investigated in the framework of the EU-funded project OASIS. Analysis of CTD data shows that the levels of major variability in temperature and salinity were confined to the upper ocean layer, which is subject to seasonal air–sea heat exchange, and to the Mediterranean Water (MW) level. In this paper we concentrate on the latter case and show that the variability observed resulted from Mediterranean water eddies (Meddies) colliding with the seamounts. Combined data from CTD surveys, current meter moorings, ship-mounted ADCP and satellite altimetry suggest that during the period of observations there was only one Meddy interacting with each of the seamounts. On Sedlo Seamount intensive interaction resulted in the loss by the Meddy of about 25% of the salt around the seamount, whereas on Seine the Meddy (or portion of it) escaped the seamount after performing several rotations around the summit without any significant interaction.  相似文献

A method for combined assimilation of climatic hydrologic fields of temperature, salinity, and the climatic dynamic level of the Black Sea into a model of sea dynamics is proposed. The monthly mean fields of the dynamic sea level were obtained from the results of assimilation of satellite altimetry data into the model. The statistical characteristics of errors in the forecasts of the level, salinity, and temperature were assumed to be proportional to the statistical characteristics of the differences between monthly mean climatic fields of temperature, salinity, and sea level calculated by means of assimilating altimetry observations of the sea level and analogous climatic hydrologic fields. The climatic fields of currents are reconstructed and analyzed. The assimilation of the climatic altimetry level allows the reproduction (in current fields) of quasi-stationary synoptic anticyclonic eddies located along the periphery of the Black Sea Rim Current.  相似文献
