In this paper, we have used optical intra-day variability archive data to calculate the central black hole masses and Eddington luminosities for nine blazars: 3C 66A, AO 0235+164, S5 0716+714, PKS 0735+178, OJ 287, 1215+303, 1216−010, 1308+326, PKS 1510−089, Mrk 501 and BL Lac using intra-day variability timescales and periodicity (if present). The calculated central black hole mass of these nine blazars using intra-day variability timescales are found to be in the range of 1.22-25.30 × 107 M and corresponding Eddington luminosity in the range of 1.58-32.88 × 1045 erg s−1. The black hole mass and Eddington luminosity are in the range of 0.32-31.23 × 108 M and 1.23-31.20 × 1046 erg s−1, respectively when optical Doppler factor is taken into account. The comparison show, our estimated values of black hole mass are consistent with earlier reported values. Periodicity were present in two blazars OJ 287 and 1216−010 which give the central black hole mass of these blazars in the range of 1.32-14.6 × 107 M and corresponding Eddington luminosity in the range of 1.60-19.0 × 1045 erg s−1, respectively.  相似文献

Based on spectropolarimetric observations Seyfert 2 (Sy2) galaxies are generally divided into two populations. Some Sy2s show polarized broad emission lines (PBLs) which is an evidence for the hypothesis of the Unified model while others do not. In order to determine the properties of these two apparently different populations we compiled a sample of 66 Sy2 objects with and without detected PBLs. We used a (J − H) − (H − Ks) diagram based on 2MASS J, H, Ks magnitudes in 14 arcsec aperture, the F[OIII] emission line flux and the infrared emission flux FKs using the Ks filter. From the (J − H) − (H − Ks) diagram we determined that one third of the Sy2 objects with PBLs have a power-law infrared component which could be a result of both a non-thermal AGN component scattered by free electrons (or dust) and emission from hot dust near its sublimation temperature. The rest of the objects (with PBLs) are significantly dominated by a dust thermal re-emission. The Sy2s without PBLs show infrared emission dominated by a host galaxy stellar component and also by thermal dust re-emission. The Sy2s with PBLs tend to have a few times larger L[OIII] luminosities than those without. Following the median values of F[OIII]/FKs, it seems that this ratio is sensitive enough to separate our sample of Sy2 galaxies into two types - with and without PBLs. There are no Sy2s with PBLs having Eddington ratio below 10−3 which confirms the results of Nicastro et al. (2003).  相似文献

This paper reports 13CO, C18O, HCO+ (J = 1−0) spectral observations toward IRAS 23133+6050 with the 13.7 m millimeter-wave telescope at Qinghai Station of PMO. Corresponding to the 13CO, C18O, HCO+ line emissions, the size of the observed molecular cloud core is 4.0 pc, 2.1 pc and 2.3 pc, the virial mass is 2.7 × 103 M, 0.9 × 103 M and 2.3 × 103 M, and the volume density of H2 is 2.7 × 103 cm−3, 5.1 × 103 cm−3 and 4.6 × 103 cm−3, respectively. Using the power-law function n(r) ∼rp, the spatial density distribution of the cloud core was analyzed, the obtained exponent p is respectively 1.75, 1.56 and 1.48 for the 13CO, C18O and HCO+ cores, and it is found that the density distribution becomes gradually flatter from the outer region to the inner region of the core. The HCO+ abundance is 4.6 × 10−10, one order of magnitude less than the value for dark clouds, and slightly less than that for giant molecular clouds. The 13CO/C18O relative abundance ratio is 12.2, comparable with the value 11.8 for dark clouds, and the value 9.0 ∼ 15.6 for giant molecular clouds. A 13CO bipolar outflow is found in this region. The IRAS far-infrared luminosity and the virial masses give the luminosity-mass ratios 18.1, 51.1 and 21.2 from the three lines.  相似文献

We have mapped the nuclear region of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 in the3 P 1 3 P 0 line of neutral carbon using the JCMT. Carbon is widespread across the nuclear region with a similiar distribution to CO as expected. Previous studies of Galactic star-forming regions showed that carbon emission is enhanced in photon-dominated regions (where UV photons impinge upon molecular clouds). Previous observations of other PDR tracers such as ionized carbon and FIR continuum constrain the physical conditions in the PDR gas of NGC 253. The carbon we have observed is far brighter than predicted by theoretical models of PDRs with solar elemental values. This indicates that carbon emission is not a reliable diagnostic of the physical conditions in the nuclear region of a galaxy undergoing a burst of star formation.  相似文献

We present the results of a statistical study of the star formation rates (SFR) derived from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations in the ultraviolet continuum and in the Hα emission line for a sample of about 800 luminous compact galaxies (LCGs). Galaxies in this sample have a compact structure and include one or several regions of active star formation. Global galaxy characteristics (metallicity, luminosity, stellar mass) are intermediate between ones of the nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at high redshifts z>2–3. SFRs were corrected for interstellar extinction which was derived from the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra. We find that SFRs derived from the galaxy luminosities in the far ultraviolet (FUV) and near ultraviolet (NUV) ranges vary in a wide range from 0.18 M ?yr?1 to 113 M ?yr?1 with median values of 3.8 M ?yr?1 and 5.2 M ?yr?1, respectively. Simple regression relations are found for luminosities L(Hα) and L(UV) as functions of the mass of the young stellar population, the starburst age, and the galaxy metallicity. We consider the evolution of L(Hα), L(FUV) and L(NUV) with a starburst age and introduce new characteristics of star formation, namely the initial Hα, FUV and NUV luminosities at zero starburst age.  相似文献

Near-infrared (NIR) integral-field spectroscopy (IFS) of violent starburst environments at high spatial (and spectral) resolution has the potential to revolutionise our ideas regarding the local interactions between the newly formed massive stars and the interstellar medium (ISM) of their host galaxies. To illustrate this point, I present NIR IFS analysis of the central starburst region of NGC 1140, obtained with CIRPASS on Gemini-South. While strong [Feii] emission is found throughout the galaxy, higher-order Brackett emission is predominantly associated with the northern starburst region. Based on the spatial distributions of the [Feii] versus Brackett line emission, I conclude that a galaxy-wide starburst was induced several ×107 yr ago, with more recent starburst activity concentrated around the northern starburst region. I look forward and discuss the exciting prospects that IFS at higher spatial (and spectral) resolution will allow us trace (i) the massive outflows (“superwinds”) expected to originate in the dense, young massive star clusters commonly found in intense starburst environments, and (ii) their impact on the galaxy’s ISM.  相似文献

A V-band nova search was carried out in NGC 3627 with archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 data which was obtained in the period between November 1997 and January 1998. A total of four novae candidates were discovered which corresponds to a global nova rate of R = 83.65 ± 7.58 yr−1. Taking into account the K-band luminosity obtained from 2MASS (Jarrett et al., 2003) yielded a luminosity specific nova rate (LSNR) of νK = 9.60 ± 1.64 novae per year per 1010L⊙,K. Excluding one of the candidates which may be a long-period variable leads to a LSNR of νK = 7.20 ± 1.23 novae per year per 1010L⊙,K. These values are higher than other known nova rates for external galaxies except the Magellanic Clouds.  相似文献

We propose a multicomponent analysis of starburst galaxies, based on a model that takes into account the young and evolved stellar components and the gas emission, with their respective extinction, in the frame of a coherent dust distribution pattern. Near-IR signatures are preferentially investigated, in order to penetrate as deep as possible into the dusty starburst cores. We computed the 1.4-2.5 μm spectra of synthetic stellar populations evolving through strong, short timescale bursts of star formation (continuum and lines, R ? 500). The evolution model is specifically sensitive to cool stellar populations (AGB and red supergiant stars). It takes advantage of the stellar library of Lançon & Rocca-Volmerange (1992) [A&ASS, 96, 593], observed with the same instrument (FTS/CFHT) as the analysed galaxy sample, so that the instrumental effects are minimised. The main near-IR observable constraints are the molecular signatures of CO and H2O and the slope of the continuum, observed over a range exceptionally broad for spectroscopic data. The H - K colour determined from the spectra measures the intrinsic stellar energy distribution but also differential extinction, which is further constrained by optical emission line ratios. Other observational constraints are the near-IR emission lines (Brγ, He I 2.06 μm, [Fe II] 1.64 μm, H2 2.12 μm) and the far-IR luminosity. The coherence of the results relies on the interpretation in terms of stellar populations from which all observable properties are derived, so that the link between the various wavelength ranges is secured. The luminosity LK is used for the absolute calibration. We apply this approach to the typical spectrum of the core of NGC 1614. Consistent solutions for the starburst characteristics (star-formation rate, IMF, burst age, morphology) are found and the role of each observational constraint in deriving satisfactory models is extensively discussed. The acceptable contamination of the K band light by the underlying population amounts ≥ 15% even through a 5 arcsec aperture. The model leads to a limit on the direct absorption of Lyman continuum photons by dust situated inside the ionised areas, which in turn, with standard gas-to-dust ratios, translates into small characteristic sizes for the individual coexisting H II regions of the massive starburst area (clusters containing ∼ 102 ionising stars). We show that room is left for IMFs extending to 120 M, rather than truncated at ∼ 60 M as most conservative studies conclude. High internal velocity dispersions (≥ 20 km s−1) are then needed for the H II regions. An original feature of this work is to base the analysis of near-infrared spectral galaxy observations on a large wavelength range, using models constructed with spectral stellar data observed with the same instrument. However a broader use of this spectral evolution model on other spectral or photometric data samples is possible if the spectral resolution of the model is adapted to observations or if colours are derived from the energy distributions.Catherine J. We report the results of 3-μm spectroscopy towards the nucleus of a nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy, NGC 5506. A weak absorption feature of carbonaceous dust is detected at ∼3.4 μm. The optical depth ratio of the 3.4-μm carbonaceous dust absorption to the 9.7-μm silicate dust absorption is smaller by more than a factor of 2 than that in the interstellar medium in our Galaxy. The small ratio is consistent with the idea that the obscuration towards the nucleus of NGC 5506 is caused mainly by dust grains in its host galaxy (type S0/a) and that the contribution of carbonaceous dust grains to the visual extinction there is smaller than that in our Galaxy (type Sb/bc).  相似文献

This paper presents the first analysis of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the eclipsing binary star WZ Hor. Observations of the system were made at the Mt. John University Observatory in 2007. Since the light contribution of the secondary component was merely 2-3% of the total light of the system in the optical wavelengths, the radial velocity of the primary component could only be determined using the cross-correlation method. A single-lined spectroscopic orbital solution of WZ Hor was obtained, and the BVRI light curves of the system and radial velocity curve of the primary component were analysed simultaneously using the Wilson-Devinney method. The results describe WZ Hor as a reverse Algol-like binary star with a detached configuration. The following absolute parameters of the components were also derived: M1 = 1.51 ± 0.03 M, M2 = 0.66 ± 0.01 M, R1 = 1.62 ± 0.02 R, R2 = 0.66 ± 0.01 R, L1 = 4.93 ± 0.64 L and L2 = 0.09 ± 0.02 L. The distance to WZ Hor was calculated as 95 ± 8 pc using distance modulus with correction for interstellar extinction, in agreement with the HIPPARCOS value.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of spectroscopic and photometric observations of the early-type W UMa system V535 Ara. New high-resolution spectra were taken at the Mt. John University Observatory in 2007. Radial velocities and spectroscopic orbital elements of the system were determined by applying KOREL spectral disentangling. The resulting orbital elements were: a1sini = 0.0047 ± 0.0001 AU, a2sini = 0.0146 ± 0.0001 AU, M1sin3i = 1.85 ± 0.01 M, and M2sin3i = 0.59 ± 0.01 M. The components were found to be in synchronous rotation following examination of their disentangled Hγ line profiles. Four photometric data-sets (1966 BV, 1967 BV, HIPPARCOS and ASAS) were modeled using the Wilson-Devinney method. The model describes V535 Ara as an A sub-type W UMa type eclipsing binary which has a fill out factor of 0.22 in marginal contact configuration. The simultaneous solution of light and radial velocity curves gave the following absolute parameters: M1 = 1.94 ± 0.04 M, M2 = 0.59 ± 0.02 M, R1 = 2.09 ± 0.03 R, R2 = 1.23 ± 0.02R, L1 = 18 ± 3 L and L2 = 6 ± 1 L. The distance to V535 Ara was calculated as 123 ± 20 pc using distance modulus with correction for interstellar extinction.  相似文献

Molecular line emission is a useful tool for probing the highly obscured inner kpc of starburst galaxies and buried AGNs. Molecular line ratios serve as diagnostic tools of the physical conditions of the gas—but also of its chemical properties. Both provide important clues to the type and evolutionary stage of the nuclear activity. While CO emission remains the main tracer for molecular distribution and dynamics, molecules such as HCN, HNC, HCO+, CN and HC3N are useful for probing the properties of the denser (n≳104 cm−3), star-forming gas. Here I discuss current views on how line emission from these species can be interpreted in luminous galaxies. HNC, HCO+ and CN are all species that can be associated both with photon dominated regions (PDRs) in starbursts—as well as X-ray dominated regions (XDRs) associated with AGN activity. HC3N line emission may identify galaxies where the starburst is in the early stage of its evolution.  相似文献

With the sample of 105 emission line galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4), we have investigated the relations of the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio with the dust extinction, the ionization state of interstellar gas and the metal abundance of galaxies. It is found that the dust extinction correction has a significant effect on the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio. Before and after the dust distinction correction is made, the mean [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratios are 0.48 and 0.89, respectively. After the dust extinction is corrected, the dispersion of the distribution of F([OII]λ3727) as a function of F(Hα) is obviously reduced. The [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio of metal-poor galaxies decreases with the increasing ionization degree of interstellar gas, but this relation does not exist in metal-rich galaxies. Besides, it is found that the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio is correlated with the metal abundance. When 12 + lg(O/H) > 8.5, the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio decreases with the increasing metal abundance; for the galaxies of 12 + lg(O/H) > 8.5, the spectral flux ratio correlates positively with the metal abundance. Finally, by using the parameters of gas ionization degree and metal abundances of galaxies, the formulae for calculating the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratios of different types of galaxies are given. With the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio given by these formulae, the star formation rate can be derived by using the [OII]λ3727-line flux, for the galaxies of the redshift z > 0.4, such as the large number of galaxies to be observed by the LAMOST telescope.  相似文献

In this study, we present long term photometric variations of the close binary system GO Cyg. Modelling of the system shows that the primary is filling Roche lobe and the secondary of the system is almost filling its Roche lobe. The physical parameters of the system are M1 = 3.0 ± 0.2M, M2 = 1.3 ± 0.1M, R1 = 2.50 ± 0.12R, R2 = 1.75 ± 0.09R, L1 = 64 ± 9L, L2 = 4.9 ± 0.7L, and a = 5.5 ± 0.3R. Our results show that GO Cyg is the most massive system near contact binary (NCB). Analysis of times of the minima shows a sinusoidal variation with a period of 92.3 ± 0.5 yr due to a third body whose mass is less than 2.3M. Finally a period variation rate of −1.4 × 10−9 d/yr has been determined using all available light curves.  相似文献

We present a multiwavelength study of the formation of massive stellar clusters, their emergence from cocoons of gas and dust, and their feedback on surrounding matter. Using data that span from radio to optical wavelengths, including Spitzer and Hubble Space Telescope ACS observations, we examine the population of young star clusters in the central starburst region of the irregular Wolf–Rayet galaxy IC4662. We model the radio-to-infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions of embedded clusters to determine the properties of their Hii regions and dust cocoons (sizes, masses, densities, temperatures), and use near-IR and optical data with mid-IR spectroscopy to constrain the properties of the embedded clusters themselves (mass, age, extinction, excitation, abundance). The two massive star-formation regions in IC4662 are excited by stellar populations with ages of ~4 Myr and masses of ~3×105 M (assuming a Kroupa initial mass function). They have high excitation and subsolar abundances, and they may actually be comprised of several massive clusters rather than the single monolithic massive compact objects known as ‘super star clusters’ (SSCs). Mid-IR spectra reveal that these clusters have very high extinction values, A V ~20–25 mag, and that the dust in IC4662 is well mixed with the emitting gas, not in a foreground screen.  相似文献

The areas of 267 dark clouds in the galaxy NGC 253 were measured. It is shown that the size distribution of these clouds obeys the same exponential formula found for the galaxies NGC 3031, 5128, 5194, and 5457. From the apparent size distribution of the dark clouds the amount of dust and the distance of NGC 253 is found to 4.4 · 107 M and 2.06 Mpc, respectively.  相似文献

We present our observations of the pair of interacting galaxies NGC 6285/86 carried out with the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) telescope using 1D and 2D spectroscopy. The observations of NGC 6286 with a long-slit spectrograph (UAGS) near the Hα line revealed the rotation of the gaseous disk around an axis offset by 5″–7″ from the photometric center and a luminous gas at a distance up to 9 kpc in a direction perpendicular to the galactic plane. Using a multipupil fiber spectrograph (MPFS), we constructed the velocity fields of the stellar and gaseous components in the central region of this galaxy, which proved to be similar. The close radial velocities of the pair and the wide (5′×5′) field of view of the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer (IFP) allowed us to simultaneously obtain images in the Hα and [N II]λ6583 lines and in the continuum, as well as to construct the radial velocity fields and to map the distribution of the [N II]λ6583/Hα ratio for both galaxies. Based on all these data, we studied the gas kinematics in the galaxies, constructed their rotation curves, and estimated their masses (2 × 1011M for NGC 6286 and 1.2 × 1010M for NGC 6285). We found no evidence of gas rotation around the major axis of NGC 6286, which argues against the assumption that this galaxy has a forming polar ring. The IFP observations revealed an emission nebula around this galaxy with a structure characteristic of superwind galaxies. The large [N II]λ6583/Hα ratio, which suggests the collisional excitation of its emission, and the high infrared luminosity are additional arguments for the hypothesis of a superwind in the galaxy NGC 6286. A close encounter between the two galaxies was probably responsible for the starburst and the bipolar outflow of hot gas from the central region of the disk.  相似文献

Traditionally, it has been believed that extinction effects due to dust within the interstellar medium of external galaxies are rather small and can largely be ignored. Over the last 10 years, however, considerable doubt has been cast over the evidence to support this comfortable idea, and it has become clear that a more detailed analysis is required. Here, a new technique for mapping the extinction in disc galaxies with high resolution is presented.
This technique has been applied to the Sc galaxy NGC 6946. The results show that dust extinction significantly affects both the overall brightness and appearance of the galaxy. The total extinction is found to be AB =0.45 – somewhat larger than the value of AB =0.2 usually quoted for an Sc galaxy. When corrected for dust the morphology more closely resembles that of an Sb galaxy rather than an Sc galaxy.
The most surprising result of this work is finding interarm regions that suffer high extinction. It appears that these regions appear faint because of the high extinction and not as a result of low stellar density. There are also interarm regions that suffer little extinction; these are therefore truly regions of low stellar density.  相似文献

We present results from an ongoing X-ray survey of Wolf–Rayet (WR) galaxies, a class of objects believed to be very young starbursts. This paper extends the first X-ray survey of WR galaxies by Stevens &38; Strickland by studying WR galaxies identified subsequent to the original WR galaxy catalogue of Conti.   Out of a sample of 40 new WR galaxies a total of 10 have been observed with the ROSAT PSPC, and of these seven have been detected (NGC 1365, NGC 1569, I Zw 18, NGC 3353, NGC 4449, NGC 5408 and a marginal detection of NGC 2366). Of these, all are dwarf starbursts except for NGC 1365, which is a barred spiral galaxy possibly with an active nucleus. We also report on observations of the related emission-line galaxy IRAS 0833+6517.   The X-ray properties of these galaxies are broadly in line with those found for the original sample; they are X-ray overluminous compared with their blue luminosity and have thermal spectra with typically kT  ∼ 0.4 − 1.0 keV. There are some oddities: NGC 5408 is very overluminous in X-rays, even compared with other WR galaxies; I Zw 18 has a harder X-ray spectrum; NGC 1365, although thought to contain an active nucleus, has X-ray properties that are broadly similar to other WR galaxies, and we suggest that the X-ray emission from NGC 1365 is due to starburst activity.   A good correlation between X-ray and blue luminosity is found for the WR galaxy sample as a whole. However, when just dwarf galaxies are considered there is little evidence of correlation. We discuss the implications of these results on our understanding of the X-ray emission from WR galaxies and suggest that the best explanation for the X-ray activity is starburst activity from a young starburst region.  相似文献
