We present a new flare star, which was discovered during our survey on a selected field at the edge of the Pleiades cluster. The field was observed in the period 2007–2010 with three different CCD‐cameras at the University Observatory Jena with telescopes from 25 to 90 cm. The flare duration is almost one hour with an amplitude in the R‐band of about 1.08 mag. The location of the flare star in a color‐magnitude diagram is consistent with age and distance of the Pleiades. In the optical PSF of the flare star there are two 2MASS objects (unresolved in most images in the optical Jena PSF), so it is not yet known which one of them is responsible for this flare. The BVRIJHK colors yield spectral types of M1 and M2 with extinction being Av = 0.231 ± 0.024 mag and Av = 0.266 ± 0.020 for those two stars, consistent with the Pleiades cluster (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Vibrations of telescopes can be successfully corrected in real time using a seismometer as an inertial reference. A prototype pendular seismometer is described that is suitable for angular vibration measurements at frequencies from a few tenths to several tens of Hz. The average pendulum position is maintained by a slow servo system that also damps its resonance. The prototype instrument has an rms noise of 3 milliarcsec in the 0–25-Hz band. It was tested on a 1-m telescope, and a good agreement of the seismometer signal with the direct optical measurements of the optical axis fluctuations of the telescope was found. A frequency response of the seismometer is studied, an expression for the rms amplitude of residual (uncompensated) vibrations is given. In space applications it is suggested that a pendular mirror in front of the telescope is used as an inertial reference for vibration correction.  相似文献

Values for the ratio of total to selective absorption are estimated from optical measurements on Cepheids, their radial velocities, and an assumed rotational velocity model of the Galaxy. It is shown that there is no systematic variation ofR with galactic longitude on the basis of these measurements.  相似文献

Radial dipole matrix elements having astrophysical importance have been computed for highly excited states of hydrogen atom. Computation is based on Heisenberg’s form of correspondence principle for Coulomb potential. Particular attention has been paid to the choice of classical analogue(n c) of principal quantum number (n). The computed radial matrix elements are in good agreement with quantum mechanical results. Further, radial matrix elements for few transitions involving highn neighboring states of hydrogen atom are presented.  相似文献

The Maxwell-Garnett mixing rule (MG) was applied to estimate the optical constant m * of the mixture of ices. A fairly good agreement between the resulting values of m * and those of our laboratory measurements suggests that the MG rule becomes a powerful tool to derive the unknown optical constants of natural dirty-ice, when there are no chemical bonds between the guest and host materials. Our results would provide the knowledge of the optical constants of dirty-ice for studies of icy substances on the surface of satellites, cometary nucleus and interplanetary dust grains based on their reflectance spectra.  相似文献

Comoving frame calculations have been used to compute the spectral lines formed in rapidly expanding spherical media. We have employed the angle-averaged partial frequency redistribution functionR I with a two-level atom model in non-LTE atom approximation. A linear velocity law increasing with radius has been employed with maximum velocity at Τ=0 being set equal to 30 mean thermal units. It is found that one obtains almost symmetric emission line profiles at large velocities similar to those found in quasars.  相似文献

Young stars produce both molecular outflows and, at a later evolutionary stage, well-collimated optical jets. The simplest explanation is that the molecular outflows are driven byobscured optical jets, rather than directly, by a disk wind for example, but the optical jets appear to have too small a momentum flux. Recent statistical studies however show that the molecular flows must be quasi-stationary, which means that the dynamical lifetime is a gross underestimate of the true age. As a consequence much less thrust is required. We present recent observations of RNO 43, which has well-defined optical and molecular outflows lying close to the plane of the sky. Excellent agreement with the observations is obtained with a simple kinematic model for the molecular material, which supposes that it lies in a parabolic shell around the optical jet with the highest velocities at the working surface. Together with our modelling of the NGC2024 outflow, this is very strong evidence that molecular outflows are produced by prompt entrainment of molecular material in a neutral or weakly-ionized jet.  相似文献

The radio recombination line intensities of heavy elements of helium, carbon and oxygen are calculated with accounting for dielectronic recombination. Dielectronic recombination rates are determined accurate to the second order of a perturbation theory and the rates are described as function of principal quantum number for helium-like atom or ion. Balance equations are solved for the departure coefficients from LTE bn. The collision and spontaneous transition rates are accounted for the balance equations, in which non-equilibrium distribution source is dielectronic recombination. Non-equilibrium amplification coefficients are found as functions of a medium temperature, density and ion charge z = 1–3 for radio recombination lines. Optical depths are calculated for the heavy element low-frequency lines with the numbers 300 > n > 1200. For the chosen electronic temperatures and densities Te = 0.8× 104–10× 104 K, Ne = 0.05–0.1 cm−3 the line optical depth is determined by the values τL∼ 0.1× 10−4–100× 10−4. Calculated for free-free transition rates, the optical depth is given by using the value τff∼ 10−2τL.  相似文献

We have treated formation of spectral lines in a commoving frame where photoionization is predominant over collisional processes. We have assumed that the radiation field for causing photoionization is a function of Planck function. We have also considered the situation in which the continuum contributes to the radiation in the line. In all the models the quantityB/A (ratio of outer to inner radii) is kept equal to 10 and the total optical depth is taken to be 103. The velocity is assumed to be varying according to the lawdV/dτ ∼ < 1/τ whereτ is the optical depth (τ > 0) in the given shell. The velocities at the innermost radius (r =A) are set equal to 0 and at the outermost radius (r =B), the maximum velocities are taken to be 0, 1, 3 and 10 Doppler units. The calculated line profiles are those seen by an observer at infinity.P Cygni-type profiles are observed in the case of a medium with no continuum absorption. For a medium with continuum absorption double peaked asymmetric profiles are noticed when the velocities are small; the two emission peaks merge into a single asymmetric peak for larger velocities.  相似文献

The distribution of relative position angles between the integrated intrinsic polarization (perpendicular to the direction of the intrinsic magnetic field) and the major axis of an extragalactic radio source were studied for different types of radio sources. Data for 280 extragalactic radio sources were used and it was found that there are large differences in the relative orientation of different types of radio sources. The directions of the intrinsic integrated magnetic fields correlate with the major radio axes of more elongated radio sources (K > 2.5, where K is the ratio of lengths of the major and minor axes of the radio images) and for radio sources of type FR II, whereas for less elongated objects (K < 2.5) and for radio sources of type FR I the magnetic fields do not correlate at all with the radio axes. An alternative mechanism for the formation of a radio galaxy from relativistic plasma ejected from the central part of an optical galaxy and moving in its large-scale, dipole magnetic field may be a theoretical basis for classification with respect to the elongation parameter K of the radio image.  相似文献

The Astrophysical Research Consortium 3.5 m telescope facility on Apache Point (2800 m above sea level) near the National Solar Observatory in southern New Mexico is nearing completion. The telescope mount has been installed and testing and fabrication of remaining subassemblies are underway. Thef/1.75 lightweight honeycomb primary mirror was cast April 1988 by the Steward Observatory Mirror Laboratory and is currently being figured.The 3.5 m optical telescope is an altitude over azimuth mechanical structure with Ritchey-Chrétien optics. The lightweight (1800 kg) mirror leads to a mount weighting only 41000 kg; readily available rolling element bearings are used to achieve the necessary performance at low cost and without the heat dissipation of externally pressurized types. Drive torques are applied by DC servo-driven capstans. These are coupled by friction to large diameter drive disks on each axis. No gears are used. Position feedback comes from low cost incremental encoders, also capstan coupled.We have recently completed a series of measurements of the telescope mount. These measurements show that the telescope is very stiff; the lowest natural frequencies are about 7.2 Hz. Initial tracking performance is good and the mount shows high resistance to wind-induced vibration. Our experience during acceptance testing suggests that routine power spectral analysis of drive motor torque and other parameters could be an important tool in the early detection of failures.Paper presented at the Symposium on the JNLT and Related Engineering Developments, Tokyo, November 29–December 2, 1988.  相似文献

A study was made of the optical warps of NGC 5907, by means of CCD photometry, for theU andI filters, as well as for a narrow band filter centred at H. Our observations were extended out to about 380 arc sec in the NW side and out to about 348 arc sec in the SE side. The Hi warps begin at these galactocentric radii, so that the optical ones are not clearly distinguished. TheU warp is larger than theI one in the NW, but this difference is not appreciated in the SE. The disk shows slight corrugations.  相似文献

The determination of the average path-length of photons in a finite isotropically scattering plane-parallel homogeneous atmosphere is discussed. To solve this problem we have used the kernel approximation method which easily allows us to find the derivatives of the intensity with respect to optical depth, optical thickness and albedo of single scattering.In order to check the results we have used another approach by exploiting the set of integrodifferential equations of Chandrasekhar for theX- andY-functions. This approach allows us to find the average path length only at the boundaries of the atmosphere but on the other hand it gives also the dispersion of the path-length distribution function, thus generating the input parameters for determining the approximate path-length distribution function. It occurred that the set so obtained is stable and the results are highly accurate.As a by-product we obtain the first two derivatives of theX- andY-functions with respect to the albedo of single scattering and optical thickness, and the mixed derivative.  相似文献

The optical pulsations in DQ Her are universally believed to be due to emission from the magnetic poles of the white dwarf. However, there is no way for a pulsation to be seen if the magnetic axis and the spin axis are aligned; whether the optical pulsation is seen directly from the magnetic poles or as a result of re-processing this beam from sides in an accretion disc, the magnetic and spin axes must be offset. This fact explains why the `oblique rotator' model has been adopted as a standard model for the DQ Her primary. In a recent paper, we have computed several axisymmetric models simulating the DQ Her white dwarf before its `turn-over' (where the term `turn-over' describes the process by which the magnetic axis gets inclining relative to the spin axis at a gradually increasing angle, the so-called `turn-over angle'). For such models, we have found that the moment of inertia along the rotation axis, I 33, is less than the moment(s) of inertia along the two other principal axes, I 11=I 22. The situation I 11>I 33 is known as `dynamical asymmetry', and can cause a spontaneous turn-over of the magnetic axis with respect to the rotation axis . Consequently, the DQ Her white dwarf is either an oblique rotator undergoing its turn-over phase, or it is already qalmostequal a `perpendicular rotator', i.e., its turn-over angle is almost equal to 90°. Assuming the first case, we study numerically the so-called `turn-over scenario', that is, a scenario on rotational evolution in which the turn-over phase is taken into account. We give emphasis on computations concerning the spin-down time rate of the DQ Her white dwarf due to turn-over (not to be confused with its spin-uptime rate due to accretion) for several possible values of the magnetic field. The statistical equilibrium equations for the continuum and first 10 levels of a hydrogen atom show that the radiation of a bright prominence (the brightness of the H line has attained 56 mÅ of the disc centre spectrum) is completely due to scattering of the Sun radiation. The basic unknowns are separated with certainty: electron concentration (n e = 3.0 × 1010 cm–3), effective thickness (l = 4.2 × 108 cm) and electron temperature (T e = 5000 K).Radiation of a very bright prominence (A (H) = 213 mÅ; T e = 7300 K; n e = 5.0 × 1011 cm–3; l = 1.3 × 107 cm) is on account of electron impacts (40%) and the Sun radiation scattering (60%).The parameters are shown to depend greatly on the prominence optical thickness in the lines of the first subordinate series of a hydrogen atom. In the course of determination all the parameters and 100 interconnected integral equations of the radiation diffusion have been thickness-averaged; the population of levels has been calculated by observations using the self-absorption factors.  相似文献

We have investigated the effects of increasing optical depths on spectral lines formed in a rotating and expanding spherical shell. We have assumed a shell whose outer radius is 3 times the inner radius, with the radial optical depths equal to 10, 50, 100, 500. We have employed a constant velocity with no velocity gradients in the shell. The shell is assumed to be rotating with velocities varying as 1/ρ, whereρ is the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation, implying the conservation of angular momentum. Two expansion (radial) velocities are treated: (1)V = 0 (static case) and (2)V = 10 mean thermal units. The maximum rotational velocities areV rot = 0, 5, 10 and 20. In the shell where there are no radial motions, we obtain symmetric lines with emission in the wings forV rot = 0 and 5 while forV rot ≥ 10 we obtain symmetric absorption lines. In the case of an expanding shell, we obtain lines with central emission.  相似文献

We use minimal empirical modelling techniques to interpret recent (2006–2007) photometry and spectroscopy of AB Dor. We compare, in particular, broadband (B and V) maculation effects with emission features in high‐resolution Ca II K‐line spectroscopy. We also compare emission effects in the Ca II Kand Hα lines observed at different rotational phases. We refer to a broader multiwavelength campaign, of which these optical data were a part, involving X‐ray and microwave observations to be published later. The broadband light curves are characterized by one outstanding macula, whereas the emission lines suggest 4 possible main chromospheric activity sites (‘faculae’). These appear at a similar latitude and with comparable size to the main umbra, but there are significant displacements in longitude. However, one strong facular concentration near phase zero may have a physical relationship to the main macula. The derived longitudes of these features would have been affected by differential rotation operating over the several months between the spectroscopic and photometric observations, but the difference of at least ∼30° between facula and umbra appears too great to allow their coincidence. The possibility of a large bipolar surface structure is considered, keeping in mind the bipolar character of solar activity centres: the activity of rapidly rotating cool stars being generally compared with that of the Sun, scaled up by a few orders of magnitude. Observed microwave activity may link to this same main photospheric and chromospheric centre picked up by the optical analysis. Characterization of macular and facular contributions in stellar activity sites would be improved with a closer timing of observations and higher signal to noise ratios in emission line data (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report the serendipitous detection of a Wide-Angle Tail (WAT) radio galaxy at 240 and 610 MHz, using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). This WAT is hosted by a cD galaxy PGC 1519010 whose photometric redshift given in the SDSS DR6 catalogue is close to the spectroscopic redshifts (0.105, 0.106 and 0.107) of three galaxies found within 4′ of the cD. Using the SDSS DR6, we have identified a total of 37 galaxies within 15′ of the cD, whose photometric redshifts are between 0.08 and 0.14. This strongly suggests that the cD is associated with a group of galaxies whose conspicuous feature is a north-south chain of galaxies (filament) extending to at least 2.6 Mpc. The ROSAT all-sky survey shows a faint, diffuse X-ray source in this direction, which probably marks the hot intracluster gas in the potential well of this group. We combine the radio structural information for this WAT with the galaxy clustering in that region to check its overall consistency with the models of WAT formation. The bending of the jet before and after its disruption forming the radio plume, are found to be correlated in this WAT, as seen from the contrasting morphological patterns on the two sides of the core. Probable constraints imposed by this on the models of WAT formation are pointed out. We also briefly report on the other interesting radio sources found in the proximity of the WAT. These include a highly asymmetric double radio source and an ultra-steep spectrum radio source for which no optical counterpart is detected in the SDSS.  相似文献

Abstract— We present combined multi‐spectral imager (MSI) (0.95 μm) and near‐infrared spectrometer (NIS) (0.8–2.4 μm) observations of Psyche crater on S‐type asteroid 433 Eros obtained by the Near‐Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR)—Shoemaker spacecraft. At 5.3 km in diameter, Psyche is one of the largest craters on Eros which exhibit distinctive brightness patterns consistent with downslope motion of dark regolith material overlying a substrate of brighter material. At spatial scales of 620 m/ spectrum, Psyche crater wall materials exhibit albedo contrasts of 32–40% at 0.946 μm. Associated spectral variations occur at a much lower level of 4–8% (±2–4%). We report results of scattering model and lunar analogy investigations into several possible causes for these albedo and spectral trends: grain size differences, olivine, pyroxene, and troilite variations, and optical surface maturation. We find that the albedo contrasts in Psyche crater are not consistent with a cause due solely to variations in grain size, olivine, pyroxene or lunar‐like optical maturation. A grain size change sufficient to explain the observed albedo contrasts would result in strong color variations that are not observed. Olivine and pyroxene variations would produce strong band‐correlated variations that are not observed. A simple lunar‐like optical maturation effect would produce strong reddening that is not observed. The contrasts and associated spectral variation trends are most consistent with a combination of enhanced troilite (a dark spectrally neutral component simulating optical effects of shock) and lunar‐like optical maturation. These results suggest that space weathering processes may affect the spectral properties of Eros materials, causing surface exposures to differ optically from subsurface bedrock. However, there are significant spectral differences between Eros' proposed analog meteorites (ordinary chondrites and/or primitive achondrites), and Eros' freshest exposures of subsurface bright materials. After accounting for all differences in the measurement units of our reflectance comparisons, we have found that the bright materials on Eros have reflectance values at 0.946 μm consistent with meteorites, but spectral continua that are much redder than meteorites from 1.5 to 2.4 μm. Most importantly, we calculate that average Eros surface materials are 30–40% darker than meteorites.  相似文献

We have mapped the continuum emission from the undisturbed Sun at a wavelength of 8.7 m during 1981–1985 using the large decameter-wave radiotelescope at Gauribidanur, India with a resolution of 26 #x00D7; 38 arc min. During the period August 6–30, 1983, the Sun was exceptionally quiet at meter and decameter wavelengths, and we were able to make maps on several consecutive days. On these days the position of the centroid of the radio Sun agreed quite closely with the center of the optical Sun indicating that there is very little or no contribution from active regions. But the observed peak brightness temperature varied from 100 000 to 700 000 K. The half-power widths of the brightness distribution were in the range of 3 to 4R . The variations of the brightness temperature and the half-power widths are not correlate. It is therefore suggested that the variations of the brightness temperature are not caused by uniform density variations or due to scattering by an irregular corona.  相似文献
