Deposits of Late Pleistocene age were investigated near the Fynselv river on the southwestern coast of Jameson Land. East Greenland. The deposits are of fluvial, deltaic shallow marine and glacigenic origin. Four stratigraphic units are recorded. Unit I consists of deltaic and shallow marine deposits reflecting a relative sea level of at least 20 m above the present. Elevated fluvial deposits represent the subaerial part of the depositional system. The system existed during full interglacial and subarctic conditions as indicated by remains or flora and Fauna and unit I is correlated with the Langelandselv interglaciation (isotopic substage 5e). Unit II consists of a till deposited by a glacier in the Scoresby Sund Fjord during the beginning of the Early Weichselian referred to as the Aucellaelv stade. The glacier probably melted in a marine environment. Unit III represents a marine delta system during the Hugin Sø interstade. and reveals a relative sea level of at least 62 m above the present. Unit IV consists of till and kame deposits assumed to be deposited by a glacier in the Scoresby Sund Fjord during the Flakkerhuk stade. probably a Late Weichselian glacier advance.

Petrographic examination of the dolomitized Main Limestone Series cropping out in the south, east and northeast corners of the South Wales Coalfield Basin shows evidence of the earlier presence of evaporite minerals. However, it is believed that lack of extensive evaporite deposits in these rocks may be due to the active diagenetic dissolution and oncoming humid coal conditions of post Main Limestone time. The evaporite minerals in the Main Limestone rocks seem to be overwhelmingly early diagenetic in origin in the light of the following observations: (1) calcite or dolomite pseudomorphs after gypsum crystals associated with a fine pelmicrite matrix; (2) association of such pseudomorphs with oolitic pelsparite; and (3) evaporite solution breccia texture.

The manganese carbonate deposits of the anoxic Littorina sediments of the Gotland Deep have been commonly related to the periodic renewal of deep water by inflowing saline water from the North Sea. The use of scanning electron microscopy-based techniques allows identification of small-scale sedimentary and geochemical features associated with Mn-carbonate laminae, which has significant implications for models of Mn-carbonate formation. Varves occurring in the Littorina sequence contain up to four laminae that may be placed in a seasonal cycle, and kutnahorite laminae occur within varves only as a winter-early spring deposit. This kutnahorite laminae seasonality is in agreement with the seasonal distribution of major Baltic inflow events recorded in historical records, and a direct causal link between inflows and kutnahorite deposition is implied. Benthic foraminifera tests are found to be heavily encrusted in kutnahorite, implying that benthic recolonization during oxidation events occurs concurrently with kutnahorite formation. The relatively common occurrence of small (50 to 100 μm) hexagonal γ-Mn-sulfide pseudomorphs, associated with 13% of kutnahorite laminae studied, is reported in Gotland Deep sediments for the first time. Although Mn-sulfide crystals are not usually preserved in the sediment, the discovery of Mn-sulfide pseudomorphs suggests that initial formation of Mn-sulfide in the Gotland Deep may occur much more commonly during the process of kutnahorite formation than previous reports of Mn-sulfide occurrence have implied.

Thaw modification is the general process whereby frost-fissure wedges are modified during thaw, and by which frost-fissure pseudomorphs may develop. Specific processes of thaw modification are inferred from ice-wedge pseudomorphs, composite-wedge pseudomorphs and deformed sand wedges in the Pleistocene Mackenzie Delta: i.e. thermal erosion, collapse, subsidence, refreezing, loading, buoyancy, spreading, folding and shearing. Thaw modification is believed to result in selective preservation of pseudomorphs and wedges. Sand wedges are more likely to be preserved than are ice-wedge pseudomorphs or compositewedge pseudomorphs, because only those sand wedges that penetrate massive ice or icy sediments are prone to thaw modification. Furthermore, whereas ice wedges preferentially develop in ice-rich, fine-grained sediments (thaw-sensitive), their pseudomorphs appear to be selectively preserved in ice-poor, coarse-grained sediments (thaw-stable).

The nature of permafrost and related environmental conditions in the Weichselian Late Pleniglacial and Lateglacial are reconstructed based on the assessment of frost structures that are best documented in the Loess Belt and in plateau areas composed of glacial till. Investigations were conducted in the central‐eastern part of the European Sand Belt (SE Poland and NW Ukraine) on a fluvio‐aeolian sedimentary succession and took into account its chronological context given by luminescence dating. Various generations of periglacial structures found in these deposits indicate not only the development of permafrost (ice‐wedge pseudomorphs) and decreased humidity (composite wedge casts) but also the degradation of permafrost (large‐scale involutions) and, finally, the establishment of deep seasonal frost (frost cracks). The diversity of structures in the study region appears to result from local conditions rather than increasing continentality of climate towards the east.

Pseudomorphs after skeletal halite occur in a bed of Lower Jurassic lacustrine shale at Holyoke, Massachusetts. The pseudomorphs include pagoda types similar to those described by Southgate and show dissolution furrows. However the shales were deposited in a permanently subaqueous rather than an emergent environment, and the pseudomorphs accordingly grew in brine-saturated sediment. Evaporation to dryness is not therefore essential to the genesis of skeletal halite.

Early diagenetic K-feldspar in the Triassic Buntsandstein of the Iberian Range (Spain) occurs as pseudomorphs after detrital K-feldspar (Or<93) and plagioclase (Ab<96). These pseudomorphs are chemically pure (Or>99), untwinned, commonly heavily clouded by vacuoles and tiny inclusions, dark-luminescing and are composed of numerous fine euhedral crystals of K-feldspar. The latter property suggests that the pseudomorphs form via dissolution of detrital K-feldspar and plagioclase and precipitation of authigenic K-feldspar. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the authigenic K-feldspar is intermediate microcline.

Oxygen isotopic compositions of weathering goethite pseudomorphs after pyrite in the lateritic profile of Yaou, French Guiana, were measured by laser fluorination. The laterite at Yaou is composed of a 25 m thick saprolite overlain by a 3 m thick latosol. Petrographic observations indicate that the pseudomorphic replacement of pyrite by goethite occurs at or near the weathering front and is complete. The goethite pseudomorphs are essentially devoid of Al and are progressively dissolved and partially replaced by a microcrystalline plasma of kaolinite and goethite in the upper horizons (latosol) of the profile. The laser technique used in this study permitted the determination of the δ18O value of individual grains of goethite and the investigation of grain-to-grain variation within a single sample (horizon) as well as vertical variation with depth. In the latosol, the goethite δ18O values range from 0.8 to 3.2%‰ and exhibit significant grain-to-grain and vertical variation. This most likely reflects undetected intragrain contamination with microcrystalline kaolinite. In the saprolite, the goethite δ18O values are consistent, ranging from 1.0 to 1.8%‰ between 3 and 18 m depth, and from 2.5 to 3.3‰ between 23 m depth and the weathering front at 28 m. Oxygen isotope compositions of present groundwater, “soil water” and rainfall at Yaou were also measured, and compared with calculated isotopic compositions for goethite-forming waters. Goethite pseudomorphs in the lower part of the saprolite are in isotopic equilibrium with present groundwater, indicating that they may be forming today or that they formed in the recent past under climatic conditions similar to present conditions. In contrast, goethite pseudomorphs found higher in the profile are not in isotopic equilibrium with present water but with a water depleted in18O by ≈ 1.50% relative to present groundwater. It is suggested that these low-δ18O pseudomorphs are probably older and formed under different paleoclimatic conditions, at a time when climatic regimes were possibly more monsoonal than today. This is in agreement with models of climatic evolution derived from pedological considerations. The results of this study suggest that goethite pseudomorphs in ancient saprolites may preserve their original O isotopic composition acquired at the weathering front, and may, therefore, be used as indicators of changes in weathering-climatic conditions during the evolution of a profile.

Following a catastrophic flash flood in July 1996, as much as 50 cm of post-glacial clays were deposited in less than 2 days in the upper reaches of the Saguenay Fjord (Quebec, Canada), disrupting the normal sedimentation and diagenetic regimes. We report detailed geochemical analyses of sediments (porosity, Eh, organic and inorganic carbon, Fe and Mn reactive solid phases, and acid volatile sulfide) and porewaters (salinity, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), Fe(II), Mn(II), nitrate, ammonium, and sulfate) for seven stations located in the Saguenay Fjord. Three of these (SAG-05, SAG-09, and SAG-30) were visited in 1996 and once per year thereafter to document the chemical evolution of the sediment toward a new steady state. The flood deposits contain less organic carbon and more inorganic carbon than the indigenous fjord sediments. The flood deposit modified the distribution patterns of reactive Mn and Fe as a result of the reduction of Mn and Fe oxides delivered with the deposit and those concentrated at the now buried former sediment-water interface. Most of the Mn(II) migrated to the new sediment-water interface, where a Mn-rich layer was formed. In contrast, much of the Fe(II) was precipitated as sulfides and remained trapped at or close to the old interface. A nitrate peak developed in the porewater at the old sediment-water interface, possibly because of the oxidation of ammonia by Mn oxides. The distributions of porewater DOC within the flood deposit correlate with the distributions of dissolved Mn(II) and Fe(II), suggesting that adsorbed DOC was released when metal oxides were reduced.

Granulite facies relics are found in the early Paleozoic kyanite-bearing melanocratic metagabbro from the Fuko Pass metacumulate mass of the Oeyama belt, southwestern Japan. The granulite facies assemblage consists of relict Al-rich clinopyroxene (up to 8.5 wt.% Al2O3) and pseudomorphs of spinel and plagioclase. The spinel pseudomorphs consist mainly of symplectic intergrowth of corundum and magnetite with minor gahnitic spinel. The plagioclase pseudomorphs are composed mainly of clinozoisite with minor kyanite. The symplectite suggests oxidation and Mg-depletion of the original spinel: hercynite (3FeAl2O4)+(O) = corundum (3Al2O3)+magnetite (Fe3O4). This oxidation reaction may have taken place at 700-900°C temperature. The melanocratic metagabbro has later been hydrated to form the epidote amphibolite assemblage represented by clinozoisite+kyanite+paragonite. The clinozoisite+kyanite assemblage has further reacted to form margarite at a lower temperature. The first granulite facies assemblage implies that the metacumulate has originally constituted a basal part of thick oceanic crust, and then has experienced the high-P/T type metamorphism in a subduction zone. This indicates that the thick oceanic crust has been formed and accreted to the Circum-Pacific orogenic belt in the early Paleozoic time.

Fabrics of phosphatized calcium carbonate particles in various phosphorites have been studied using scanning electron microscopy coupled with X-ray dispersive microanalysis. Replacement of calcium carbonate by apatite has been observed in bivalve shell fragments and in foraminiferal tests; replacement proceeds at constant volume with excellent preservation of the original microtextures. In some deposits, replacement of carbonate by apatite is the main phosphogenic process. However, in general, the process seems to be far less important than might be believed purely on the basis of thin section observations. In many phosphorites, internal or external apatite moulds of bioclasts are common, including very small particles such as coccoliths in phosphatized chalks. Apatite precipitation was typically followed by carbonate dissolution. Later apatite precipitation within the dissolution voids may produce partial or total phosphate pseudomorphs of the original carbonate grain. In these examples direct replacement of carbonate by phosphate cannot be demonstrated.

It has been shown that the main uranium ore mineral, pitchblende (uranium dioxide), is a natural analog of synthetic uraninite (also uranium dioxide), which constitutes 96% of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). Geochronological studies of the U‐Pb isotope systems in unaltered pitchblende from the orebodies reveal that these systems remained completely closed over the entire period (approximately 135 Ma) since the formation of the deposits. The bulk of the primary uranium ores within the Streltsovskoye ore field was influenced to various degrees by post‐ore hydrothermal solutions that led to pitchblende spherulites being replaced by pseudomorphs of an amorphous phase with a U‐Si composition; this phase also re‐precipitated in veinlets proximal to the pitchblende pseudomorphs. A technique specially developed by the authors was used to carry out quantitative counts of the abundance of uranium minerals by calculating the uranium mass balance in one of the orebodies subjected to hydrothermal alteration. The calculations reveal minimal uranium loss from the orebody. Uranium liberated in the process of the pseudomorphic replacement of pitchblende was immediately fixed, in situ, in the newly formed coffinite‐like amorphous U‐Si phase as a result of the development of an efficient geochemical barrier that prevented the long‐distance migration of uranium. In assessing the long‐term safety of underground SNF repositories, the results of the present study give us confidence that SNF uraninite, in terms of the preservation of its integrity as a mineral phase, provides for the reliable long‐term isolation of uranium, transuranium elements, and fission products that are “sealed” in the uraninite matrix. In the case of the mineral transformation of the uraninite matrix by hydrothermal solutions, the liberated uranium would be efficiently immobilized by the newly formed amorphous U‐Si phase.

Ancient evaporite deposits are geological archives of depositional environments characterized by a long‐term negative precipitation balance and bear evidence for global ocean element mass balance calculations. Here, Cretaceous selenite pseudomorphs from western Anatolia (‘Rosetta Marble’) — characterized by their exceptional morphological preservation — and their ‘marine’ geochemical signatures are described and interpreted in a process‐oriented context. These rocks recorded Late Cretaceous high‐pressure/low‐temperature, subduction‐related metamorphism with peak conditions of 1·0 to 1·2 GPa and 300 to 400°C. Metre‐scale, rock‐forming radiating rods, now present as fibrous calcite marble, clearly point to selenitic gypsum as the precursor mineral. Stratigraphic successions are recorded along a reconstructed proximal to distal transect. The cyclical alternation of selenite beds and radiolarian ribbon‐bedded cherts in the distal portions are interpreted as a two type of seawater system. During arid intervals, shallow marine brines cascaded downward into basinal settings and induced precipitation. During more humid times, upwelling‐induced radiolarian blooms caused the deposition of radiolarite facies. Interestingly, there is no comparable depositional setting known from the Cenozoic world. Meta‐selenite geochemical data (δ13C, δ18O and 87Sr/86Sr) plot within the range of reconstructed middle Cretaceous seawater signatures. Possible sources for the 13C‐enriched (mean 2·2‰) values include methanogenesis, gas hydrates and cold seep fluid exhalation. Spatially resolved component‐specific analysis of a rock slab displays isotopic variances between meta‐selenite crystals (mean δ13C 2·2‰) and host matrix (mean δ13C 1·3‰). The Cretaceous evaporite‐pseudomorphs of Anatolia represent a basin wide event coeval with the Aptian evaporites of the Proto‐Atlantic and the pseudomorphs share many attributes, including lateral distribution of 600 km and stratigraphic thickness of 1·5 to 2·0 km, with the evaporites formed during the younger Messinian salinity crisis. The Rosetta Marble of Anatolia may represent the best‐preserved selenite pseudomorphs worldwide and have a clear potential to act as a template for the study of meta‐selenite in deep time.

A suite of unusual highly skeletal halite pseudomorphs is described from the lower Middle Cambrian rocks that crop out at Ardmore in the Georgina Basin, northern Australia. The pseudomorphs are preserved as both moulds and casts within a dark and light colour-banded chert. They are orientated parallel to bedding and represent halite crystal growth within a brine pool. Laterally equivalent rocks are characterized by sedimentary textures and structures indicative of periodic emergence and desiccation. Laboratory grown halite crystals are also described and compared with the pseudomorphs from Ardmore. Experimentally produced halite crystals formed from either: (1) brine solutions obtained as residues after organic matter extraction from phosphate rocks, or (2) solutions of NaCI and distilled water. Both pyramidal rafted hoppers and floor nucleated cuboids formed in solutions containing only NaCI and distilled water; whereas in the residue solutions, that contained humic acids, rafted pyramidal forms were absent and crystal nucleation was restricted to the floor of the evaporative dish. As brine depth decreased the halite precipitation rate increased and resulted in a suite of excrescent, highly skeletal crystals that formed as a result of brine evaporation to dryness. The variable crystal morphology depended upon both the brine depth and slope of the evaporative dish floor. Horizontally orientated chevron halite crystals formed where the evaporative dish was inclined and precipitation preferentially occurred on cube faces. Pagoda, reticulate ridge and dendritic forms represent an increasingly skeletal crystal suite characterized by the preferential precipitation of NaCI on cube edges and corners rather than faces. Using the experimentally grown crystals as analogues the pseudomorphs at Ardmore are interpreted as forming in very shallow brine pools that evaporated to dryness.

This study reports a complex fluid and thermal history using petrography, electron microprobe, isotopic analysis and fluid inclusions in replacement minerals within gypsum pseudomorphs in Tithonian-Berriasian lacustrine deposits in Northern Spain. Limestones and dolostones, formed in the alkaline lakes, contain lenticularly shaped gypsum pseudomorphs, considered to form in an evaporative lake. The gypsum was replaced by quartz and non-ferroan calcite (Ca-2), which partially replaces the quartz. Quartz contains solid inclusions of a preexisting non-ferroan calcite (Ca-1), anhydrite and celestine. High homogenization temperatures (T h ) values and inconsistent thermometric behaviour within secondary fluid inclusion assemblages in quartz (147?C351°C) and calcite (108?C352°C) indicate high temperatures after precipitation and entrapment of lower temperature FIAs. Th are in the same range as other reequilibrated fluid inclusions from quartz veins in the same area that are related to Cretaceous hydrothermalism. Gypsum was replaced by anhydrite, likely during early burial. Later, anhydrite was partially replaced by Ca-1 associated with intermediate burial temperatures. Afterward, both anhydrite and Ca-1 were partially replaced by quartz and this by Ca-2. All were affected during higher temperature hydrothermalism and a CO2-H2O fluid. Progressive heating and hydrothermal pulses, involving a CO2-H2O fluid, produce the reequilibration of the FIAs, which was followed by uplift and cooling.

Copper sulfide pseudomorphs after phytodetritus in ore-bearing sedimentary rocks of the Middle Timan region were studied by ore microscopy, X-ray methods, electron scanning microscopy (microprobe), and chemical analysis. It was established that jurleite rather than chalcocite, as was previously assumed, is the major copper sulfide in pseudomorphs. Other copper sulfides detected in microscopic amounts are inferior to jurleite in abundance. Two types of jurleite—white and light blue—can be distinguished under an ore microscope. In addition to color, jurleite varieties differ in size of crystals and hardness. White jurleite occurs as large grains in superficial crusts and pith pseudomorphs or fills contraction fissures in plant tissue. Light blue jurleite segregations are combined with microgranular units and altered wood. Part of the light blue jurleite replaces the white variety. Light blue jurleite has a higher relief on a polished surface. The common crystallographic orientation of sulfide grains in pseudomorphs was noted for all modes of occurrence of jurleite. Jurleite grains of various shapes and different hardness may be detected in the same sample. In general, copper sulfides were formed in the following sequence: (i) filling of fissures and interstices in wood, (ii) formation of superficial crusts composed of white jurleite, (iii) joining of fissures by pseudomorphs after organic matter and partial replacement of white jurleite with the light blue variety, and (iv) secondary transformation of light blue jurleite with partial redistribution of its constituents between less frequent copper sulfides.

In an area in southwesternmost Värmland, western Sweden, ice-marginal deposits have been mapped and studied. They can be correlated with the Norwegian Younger Dryas to Preboreal Ås, Ski and Aker ice-marginal ridges, and with lines of ice recession earlier constructed in Dalsland. Together they give valuable information about the mode of deglaciation in southern Scandinavia. They indicate a pattern of deglaciation with intense upbreaking by calving of the ice eastwards from the Oslo Fjord and northwards in the Vänern basin. This process caused a downdraw of ice around the highland between those areas. Ice streams and, later, valley glaciers were formed in the large Årjäng-Koppom and Glafsfjorden-Byälven valleys. Between them a lobe-shaped, stagnant ice cap was isolated from further supply from the main ice sheet in the north. This ice cap, here called the Dal lobe, wasted down with a complicated pattern from the west, south and east.
