The “wave turbopause” is defined as the mesospheric altitude level where the temperature fluctuation field indicates a substantial increase in wave amplitudes in the vertical direction.The turbopause altitude is analyzed on the basis of four years of SABER data (2002–2005, Version 1.06). Substantial seasonal and latitudinal variations are found, with some interannual variability also present. Seasonal changes are annual at high latitudes, semi-annual at low latitudes, and a mixture of both at middle latitudes. Southern hemisphere data are similar as in the North if shifted by half a year. Latitudinal variations show a minimum in the tropics and two relative maxima at middle latitudes.The “wave turbopause” is found near to zero-wind lines or low-wind zones (zonal wind). It is compared to rocket and other measurements, and interesting similarities are obtained. The wave turbopause can also be found in the HAMMONIA GCM. A preliminary analysis shows results similar to those of the SABER measurements.  相似文献

We have examined the evidence presented by Labat et al. and found that (1) their claims for a 4% increase in global runoff arising from a 1 °C increase in air temperature and (2) that their article provides the “first experimental data-based evidence demonstrating the link between the global warming and the intensification of the global hydrological cycle” are not supported by the data presented. Our conclusions are based on the facts that (1) their discharge records exhibit non-climatic influences and trends, (2) their work cannot refute previous studies finding no relation between air temperature and runoff, (3) their conclusions cannot explain relations before 1925, and (4) the statistical significance of their results hinges on a single data point that exerts undue influence on the slope of the regression line. We argue that Labat et al. have not provided sufficient evidence to support their claim for having detected increases in global runoff resulting from climate warming.  相似文献

Deep-water samples collected during the Kaiko project are often associated with biological communities located on geological structures favorable to fluid venting. The evidence of fluid venting are the temperature anomalies, the decrease in sulfate concentrations, the content in methane and the lowC1(C2 +C3) ratio of light hydrocarbons. Because of large dilution by ambiant seawater during sampling it is difficult to compute the composition of the advected end-member pore fluid. Part of this fluid should originate in the “petroleum window”, i.e. at temperature about 60°C. Modeling the upward flow of water, taking into account the anomalies of temperature measured on the seafloor and the geochemical anomalies, leads to non-steady-state advection of the pore fluid. The occurrence of a deep component in the fluid has implications for the geological and tectonic models of the subduction zones off Japan.  相似文献

This paper summarises the results of the “Rhithron Ecology Group” meeting in Essen (March 2000), supplemented by a literature evaluation.An extended view of small mountain streams in Central Europe under “potentially natural conditions” is presented. We focus on the potential impact of natural transverse structures (debris dams and beaver dams) on stream morphology, hydrology, habitat composition and communities. Furthermore, impact of other stream morphological features, which are presently lacking in the Central European landscape, is described.We suggest that Central European mountain streams are characterised by a higher proportion of lentic zones under “potentially natural conditions”. Morphological degradation leads to a loss of lentic zones and to an increase of current velocities and corresponding changes in faunal composition, particularly higher abundance and proportion of rheophilic species and a decrease of species preferring lentic zones. This should be regarded in future stream assessment.  相似文献

Design seismic forces depend on Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) values and on the shape of Response Spectrum (RS) curves dictated by Building Codes or which need to be evaluated in every particular case. The PGA values and RS curves strictly depend on earthquake magnitude and distance, as well as on the regional and local geological conditions. At present, there is no doubt that it is necessary to construct so-called “Site & Region-specific” Building Code provisions reflecting the influence of different magnitude events at different distances that may occur during the life time of the construction, as well as the variety of local ground conditions. A scheme of Uniform Hazard Response Spectra and PGA estimation considering local site response is described in this paper. The assessments of these design parameters are obtained on the basis of Uniform Hazard Fourier spectra using the conception of “dominant earthquakes”. The effect of local geology is included by means of the soil/reference site spectral ratios.  相似文献

Twenty-seven dives of the submersible “Nautile” in the subduction zone around Japan conducted in the French-Japanese Project Kaiko proved that fairly luxuriant benthic communities dominated by deep-sea giant clams of the genusCalyptogena (family Vesicomyidae) were consistently present on the accretionary prism at abyssal depths.Benthic communities characterized by three hitherto undescribed bivalves of the genusCalyptogena were found between depths of about 3800 and 4020 m at the mouth of Tenryu Canyon and at the top of basement swell of the Zenisu Ridge, both situated in the eastern Nankai subduction zone. Sporadic but discrete patches of organisms characterized by one more undescribed bivalve belonging to the genusCalyptogena were observed and collected between depths of 5130 and 5960 m on the landward wall of the Japan and Kouriles Trenches.Photographic inventories were prepared semiquantitatively using each series of bottom photographs taken in these areas with bow cameras of the submersible “Nautile”.Observations on the sporadic but dense distribution of the clams and other characteristic associated organisms match well with the scheme that communities sustained by chemosynthetic energy sources can be present at connate water seepages in subduction zones. These are to date the deepest record of benthic communities supposedly associated with chemosynthetic processes.  相似文献

We present the results of a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment and disaggregation analysis aimed to understand the dominant magnitudes and source-to-site distances of earthquakes that control the hazard at the Celano site in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. Firstly, we calculated a peak ground acceleration map for the central Apennines area, by using a model of seismogenic sources defined on geological-structural basis. The source model definition and the probabilistic seismic hazard evaluation at the regional scale (central Apennines) were obtained using three different seismicity models (Gutenberg–Richter model; characteristic earthquake model; hybrid model), consistent with the available seismological information. Moreover, a simplified time-dependent hypothesis has been introduced, computing the conditional probability of earthquakes occurrence by Brownian passage time distributions.Subsequently, we carried out the disaggregation analysis, with a modified version of the SEISRISK III code, in order to separate the contribution of each source to the total hazard.The results show the percentage contribution to the Celano hazard of the various seismogenic sources, for different expected peak ground acceleration classes. The analysis was differentiated for close (distance from Celano <20 km) and distant (distance from Celano >20 km) seismogenic sources. We propose three different “scenario earthquakes”, useful for the site condition studies and for the seismic microzoning study: (1) large (M=6.6) local (Celano-epicentre distance 16 km) earthquake, with mean recurrence time of 590 years; (2) moderate (M=5.5) local (Celano-epicentre distance 7.5 km) earthquake, with mean recurrence time of 500 years; and (3) large (M=6.6) distant (Celano-epicentre distance 24 km) earthquake, with mean recurrence time of 980 years.The probabilistic and time-dependent approach to the definition of the “scenario earthquakes” changes clearly the results in comparison to traditional deterministic analysis, with effects in terms of engineering design and seismic risk reduction.  相似文献

On account of the low porosity of the lithosphere, intracrustal fluids behave very differently from surface fluids, in that they are changing their geochemical and isotopic labels according to the geological environment. Given a heat source, meteoric waters can be supplied plentifully and their rates of throughput in geothermal systems are sufficiently high to exhaust the compositional signals of a given rock buffer. In contrast, fluids exsolved from magma, and subducted fluids, would be supplied at less than about one tenth of the meteoric rate over the life time of a system. Based on up-to-date flow models, the isotopic evolution of meteoric water interacting with crustal rock follows a curved to L-shaped track in the δD versus δ18O plot. Instantaneous (present-day) tie-lines between recharge and discharge are secants of such tracks and can have a range of slopes. At the start of an interaction, waters have δD and δ18O values approaching equilibrium with the original rock composition (water “W1”). Using known hydrogen isotope fractionation factors, W1 values generally plot in the region of “andesite” or “andesitic” waters of various authors. Since the W1 waters have δD values that are on average more positive, and also less variable than those of the meteoric recharges, most tracks and tie-lines have positive slopes, and the plotting of a large number of tie-lines will produce a focus on the field of W1 waters, regardless of the original water source.  相似文献

Intrusive degassing and recycling of degassed and dense magma at depth have been proposed for a long time at Stromboli. The brief explosive event that occurred at the summit craters on 9 January 2005 threw out bombs and lapilli that could be good candidates to illustrate recycling of shallow degassed magma at depth. We present an extensive data set on both the textures and the mineral, bulk rock and glassy matrix chemistry of the “9 Jan” products. The latter have the common shoshonitic–basaltic bulk composition of lavas and scoriae issued from typical strombolian activity. In contrast they differ by the heterogeneous chemistry of their matrix glasses and their crystal textures that testify to crystal dissolution event(s) just prior magma crystallization upon ascent and eruption. Comparison between mineral paragenesis of the natural products and experimental phase equilibria suggest water-induced magma re-equilibration. We propose that mineral dissolution is related to water enrichment of the recycled degassed magma, via differential gas bubble transfer and to some extents its physical mixing with volatile-rich magma blobs. However, all these features illustrate transient processes. Even though evidence of mineral dissolution is ubiquitous at Stromboli, its effect on the bulk magma chemistry is minor because of the subtle interplay between mineral dissolution and crystallization in magmas having comparable bulk chemistry.  相似文献

Two unusual diamonds were studied from kimberlites from China, which contain both ultramafic and eclogitic mineral inclusions in the same diamond hosts. Diamond L32 contains seven Fe-rich garnets, four omphacites and one olivine inclusion. Four olivine, one sanidine and one coesite were recovered from diamond S32. Both garnet and omphacite inclusions have similar compositions as those from other localities of the world, and show basaltic bulk composition. All the garnet and omphacite inclusions in diamond L32 have positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu*1.64 1.79). These observations support the proposal that mantle eclogite is the metamorphic product of subducted ancient oceanic crust. The Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratio of the olivine inclusions from the two diamonds (91-92) are evidently lower than the normal olivine inclusions in diamonds from the same kimberlite pipe (92-95). The following model is proposed for the formation of diamonds with “mixed” mineral inclusions. Ascending diamond-bearing eclogite (recycled oceanic crust) entrained in mantle plumes may experience extensive partial melting, whereas the ambient peridotite matrix remains subsolidus in the diamond stable field. This provides a mechanism for the transport of diamond from its original eclogitic host to an ultramafic one. Subsequent re-growth of diamond in the new environment makes it possible to capture mineral inclusions of different lithological suites. Partial melts of basaltic sources may interact with the surrounding peridotite, resulting in the relatively lower Mg/(Mg + Fe) ratios of the coexisting olivine inclusions from the studied diamonds. Diamonds with “mixed” mineral inclusions demonstrate that plume activity also occurred in the Archean cratons.  相似文献

Water losses due to transpiration and evaporation of intercepted water were measured using a “natural” lysimeter in the Hafren forest of central Wales, and were compared with estimates of potential evaporation calculated from meteorological observations. Given certain assumptions concerning the forest canopy, the lysimeter observations were used to estimate runoff from the experimental catchment of the Upper Severn, within which the lysimeter is sited; this estimate agreed well with observation.  相似文献

The Tadhak alkaline ring-complex of Permian age provides two whole rock UPb isochrons giving concordant ages in agreement within relative errors with the RbSr isochron age:235U207Pb isochron: 271 ± 32Ma(MSWD= 0.3);238U206Pb isochron: 254 ± 18Ma(MSWD= 7.8), both on 8 whole-rock samples. The existence of these isochrons indicates that in favorable conditions U (and Pb) can be immobile. This can be due either to the lack of hard oxidizing conditions and/or to the location of U, in very low concentrations, in weathering-resistant minerals. The initial ratios (206Pb/204Pb = 18.714 ± 70and207Pb/204Pb = 15.589 ± 16), corrected for their Permian age, lie in the range observed for oceanic island basalts or continental alkali basalts and indicate an origin in a similar mantle, without any significant crustal contamination. This was also suggested by the initial87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.70457 ± 4. Moreover, these Sr and Pb isotopic characteristics belong to the field of the so-called “Dupal” anomaly and indicate that it existed already 270 Ma ago. This study shows the potential interest of isotopic investigations of within-plate alkaline ring-complexes to characterize subcontinental mantle compositions, particularly in the past.  相似文献

In order to investigate the possibility and limitations of paleomagnetic works within strained regions, a paleomagnetic study, related with strain analysis has been conducted in the deformed Pyrenean Permian redbeds in the “Col du Somport” area. Paleomagnetic sampling together with strain estimates have been conducted in 6 sites through a fold. The results obtained by measuring the orientation and axial ratios of elliptical reduction spots show that (1) the shale beds have undergone a penetrative strain, (2) the sandy beds can be regarded as tectonically unstrained with reduction spots flattened in the bedding, showing that they recorded the compaction. It is shown that the total strain recorded in the slaty beds probably results from the superimposition of tectonic strain upon the compaction fabric. The paleomagnetic study shows that the primary pretectonic magnetization is widely overprinted by a secondary syn- or post-tectonic magnetic component. As both components appear to be carried by hematite pigment, their separation using classical demagnetization procedures has been difficult. A characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) has however been determined, when possible, as the hardest component in demagnetization curves. Then, the ChRM direction distributions are represented in stereographic density plots. Although these ChRM directions exhibit a clear tendency towards SE declinations and shallow inclinations, characteristic of Permian paleomagnetic field direction for the Iberian plate, the tilt correction does not induce a clustering of these directions. Strain is inferred to be responsible for this situation. Assuming that both pretectonic magnetization directions and bedding planes closely follow the material plane and line strain response model of March [1], an attempt has been made to remove the effect of strain upon the remanent magnetization. It is shown that when using a reconstructed tectonic strain tensor (i.e., the total strain tensor as measured in the field, corrected for an estimated compaction) we obtain a significant clustering of ChRM directions. The computation of the relevant VGP, gives a pole position (210.5°E, 42.0°N) compatible with the reference APWP for the Iberian plate. It is therefore inferred that the strain removal technique is a usable tool in order to obtain paleomagnetic results within such strained rocks.  相似文献

During 1968–1969 the “Bocca Nuova”, a small vent, 7 m across, located in the northern part of Mt. Etna's summit crater showed a resonating-pipe phenomenon triggered by explosions at its bottom. Tholeiitic basalts and associated intrusives are the major component of the Karoo igneous province. They are of Mesozoic age and constitute one of the world's classic continental flood basalt (CFB) provinces. It has been argued that most Karoo basalts have not undergone significant contamination with continental crust and that their lithospheric mantle source areas were enriched in incompatible minor and trace elements during the Proterozoic. The only exceptions to this are late-stage MORB-like dolerites near the present-day continental margins which are considered to be of asthenospheric origin.When data for the “southern” Karoo basalts are plotted on many of the geochemical discriminant diagrams which have been used to infer tectonic setting, essentially all of them would be classified as calc-alkali basalts (CAB's) or low-K tholeiites. Virtually none of them plot in the compositional fields designated as characteristic of “within-plate” basalts. There is little likelihood that the compositions of the Karoo basalts can be controlled by active subduction at the time of their eruption and no convincing evidence that a “subduction component” has been added to the subcontinental lithospheric mantle under the entire area in which the basalts crop out. It must be concluded that the mantle source areas for CAB's and the southern Karoo basalts have marked similarities.In contrast, the data for “northern” Karoo basalts largely plot in the “within-plate” field on geochemical discriminant diagrams. Available data suggest that the source composition and/or the restite mineralogy and degree of partial melting are different for southern and northern Karoo basalts. There is no evidence for any difference in tectonic setting between the southern and northern Karoo basalts at the time they were erupted. This appears to be clear evidence that specific mantle source characteristics and/or magmatic processes can vary within a single CFB province to an extent that renders at least some geochemical discriminant diagrams most unreliable for classifying tectonic environment with respect to continental volcanic rocks.  相似文献

Settled particles of fresh, labile organic matter may be a significant source of oxygen demand and nutrient regeneration in seasonally-hypoxic regions caused by nutrient inputs into stratified coastal zones. Studying the dynamics of this material requires sediment sampling methods that include flocculent organic materials and overlying water (OLW) at or above the sediment–water interface (SWI). A new coring device (“HYPOX” corer) was evaluated for examining nitrogen- (N) and oxygen-dynamics at the SWI and OLW in the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOMEX). The HYPOX corer consists of a “Coring Head” with a check-valve, a weighted “Drive Unit,” and a “Lander,” constructed from inexpensive components. The corer collected undisturbed sediment cores and OLW from sediments at NGOMEX sampling sites with underlying substrates ranging from sand to dense clay. The HYPOX corer could be deployed in weather conditions similar to those needed for a multi-bottle rosette water-sampling system with 20 L bottles. As an example of corer applicability to NGOMEX issues, NH4+ cycling rates were examined at hypoxic and control sites by isotope dilution experiments. The objective was to determine if N-dynamics in OLW were different from those in the water column. “Ammonium demand,” as reflected by potential NH4+ uptake rates, was higher in OLW than in waters collected from a meter or more above the bottom at both sites, but the pattern was more pronounced at the hypoxia site. By contrast, NH4+ regeneration rates were low in all samples. These preliminary results suggest that heterotrophic activity and oxygen consumption in OLW in the hypoxic region may be regulated by the availability of NH4+, or other reduced N compounds, rather than by the lack of sufficient labile organic carbon.  相似文献

This work follows the paper titled “Spatial transport and spectral transfer of solar wind turbulence composed of Alfvén waves and convective structures I: The theoretical model”, and deals with the detailed physics and numerical solution of a two-component solar wind model, consisting of small-scale Alfvén waves and convected structures. In particular, we present numerical results which qualitatively reflect many of the observed features of the radial and spectral evolution of the turbulent energies, the residual energy, the cross-helicity and Alfvén-ratio in high-speed solar wind streams. These features are the following: the formation of a characteristic “inclined eye”, which evolves between the energy spectra displayed over the frequency axis and tends to close in the radial development of the spectra, a steepening of all spectra towards Kolmogorov-like f-5/3 spectra, the development of the normalized cross-helicity towards a constant not much less than one and the formation of a “trough” form of the Alfvén ratio with a z-shaped left boundary, By weighting special terms in the equations differently, we can also cast light on the physical role of parametric conversion model terms, wave-structure scattering model terms, nonlinear terms, spherical expansion terms and their effects on the radial evolution of turbulent energies in high-speed solar wind streams.  相似文献

Seismic and eruptive activities that occurred at Etna volcano during the decade 1978–1987 have been analyzed statistically. The seismic activity consists of about 7500 events. This catalog has been found complete above the magnitude threshold 2.8. On the basis of the complete catalog (1458 earthquakes), the clustering features of seismicity have been investigated. The hypothesis of a Simple Poisson process is rejected. Applying a Generalized Poisson process of the Shlien and Toksoz (1970) type, the “E” parameter of cluster size appears to be strongly dependent on the chosen time interval. The application of Gasperini and Mulargia (1989) algorithm for identifying the single earthquake sequences indicates that the whole period is composed of only three sequences. Etnean seismicity appears therefore characterized by a “diffuse” low-magnitude (less than about 3.0) earthquake occurrence. From the volcanological point of view, two time series of eruptions (flank and flank + summit) have been analyzed in order to identify different regimes in both magma output and inter-event time. No change-points are apparent in the magma output series, while both inter-event time series of flank and flank + summit eruptions are characterized by one change-point each. No evident relation between the series of eruptions and the identified earthquake sequences is apparent.  相似文献
