We present results from a study of the spatial distributions of line emission and relative line-of-sight velocity in the atmosphere above 17 sunspot regions, from the chromosphere, through the transition region and into the corona, based on simultaneous observations of ten EUV emission lines with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer – CDS on SOHO. We find that the spatial distributions are nonuniform over the sunspot region and introduce the notation 'sunspot loop' to describe an enhanced transition region emission feature that looks like a magnetic loop, extending from inside the sunspot to the surrounding regions. We find little evidence for the siphon flow. Attention is given to the time variations since we observe both a rapid variation with a characteristic time of a few to several minutes and a slow variation with a time constant of several hours to 1 day. The most prominent features in the transition region intensity maps are the sunspot plumes. We introduce an updated criterion for the presence of plumes and find that 15 out of 17 sunspots contain a plume in the temperature range logT5.2–5.6. The relative line-of-sight velocity in sunspot plumes is high and directed into the Sun in the transition region. Almost all the sunspot regions contain one or a few prominent, strongly redshifted velocity channels, several of the channels extend from the sunspot plume to considerable distances from the sunspot. The flow appears to be maintained by plasmas at transition region temperatures, moving from regions located at a greater height outside the sunspots and towards the sunspot. The spatial correlation is high to moderate between emission lines formed in the transition region lines, but low between the transition region lines and the coronal lines. From detailed comparisons of intensity and velocity maps we find transition region emission features without any sign of coronal emission in the vicinity. A possible explanation is that the emission originates in magnetic flux tubes that are too cold to emit coronal emission. The comparisons suggest that gas at transition region temperature occur in loops different from loops with coronal temperature. However, we cannot exclude the presence of transition region temperatures close to the footpoints of flux tubes emitting at coronal temperatures. Regions with enhanced transition region line emission tend to be redshifted, but the correlation between line emission and relative line-of-sight velocity is weak. We extend our conditional probability studies and confirm that there is a tendency for line profiles with large intensities and red shifts (blue shifts) above the average to constitute an increasing (decreasing) fraction of the profiles as the wavelength shift increases.  相似文献

Observations of the quiet-Sun network in the UV emission line Siiv 1393 Å over a time period of two hours are presented. Bursts of explosive events, highly Doppler-shifted emission, seem to be sporadically emitted from the brighter regions of the network lanes. Individual events have typical lifetimes of ≈ 1–6 min and come in bursts of up to 30 min. The most spectacular burst in this dataset, shown in the accompanying movie, lasts ≈ 30 min and shows a wide variety of line profiles with both red and blue shifts ≈180 km s1. There appears to be no characteristic form or evolutionary pattern to the line profiles in either the individual events or series of events. There are about twice as many blue shifts as red shifts.  相似文献

The Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation instrument (SUMER) observations show high Doppler shifts and temporal variations in profiles of ultraviolet lines from low temperature gas in the corona above the active region NOAA 7974. The profiles indicate 100 km s-1 flows coming from an almost stationary source that appears bright in the lines of N III and Si III. The variations in line-of-sight velocities and intensities suggest small knots of cooling plasma emanating from a small region high in the corona. A few arc sec sunward of the region where the cool flows are seen is an elongated region of enhanced higher temperature, low velocity Ne VI and Mg VI line emission.  相似文献

New observations of systematic red shifts of transition region and coronal lines obtained with SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) on SOHO (the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) are presented. With the extensive wavelength coverage of SUMER it is possible to extend the measurements of the red shifts to much higher temperatures compared to previous instruments. We find lines formed in the upper transition region (e.g. Ov, Sv, and Svi) to be red-shifted similar to lower temperature lines (T ≤ 1.8 x 10-5 K). Even hotter lines such as Ovi, Neviii and Mgx show systematic red shifts on the order of 5 km s-1 in the quiet Sun. This is a new and significant result since previous measurements of the red shifts were less well constrained. The behavior of the red shifts above T = 10-5 K has been somewhat controversial. In some earlier investigations the magnitude of the red shift has been found to increase with temperature, reaching a maximum at T = 10-5 K and then to decrease toward higher temperatures. Thus, our results will put new constraints on theoretical models. The measured shifts are compared to recent observations of red-shifted emission in stellar spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope.  相似文献

We studied changes in thermodynamic parameters of the chromosphere at the initial stage of the two-ribbon solar flare accompanied by a surge that occurred on September 4, 1990. The inhomogeneous semiempirical models of the flare chromosphere and surge are constructed for four observation moments. The spectra were obtained with the ATsU-26 horizontal solar telescope of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Terskol Peak). Photometric transections of the spectra passed through two bright kernels of one of the flare ribbons and through the surge. The comparison of the observed profiles of the line Hα in the solar active and quiet-Sun regions reveals the substantial emission in the line wings (up to 1–1.2 nm) with a residual intensity of 0.6–0.77 at the center of the line profiles. Calculations within the two-component models of the chromosphere have shown that this may be the evidence of the existence of the details (unresolved by the telescope and occupying 5–12% of the total area) with a deep heating of the chromosphere layers. A strong asymmetry of the line profiles and the shift with respect to the line profile for the quiet-Sun region are explained by peculiarities of the line-of-sight velocity distribution over the height. It is found that the motion is directed to the observer in the upper chromosphere (10–30 km/s) and from the observer in the lower chromosphere (5–20 km/s) for the larger part of the active region under study. According to the models calculated for the surge, the line-of-sight velocities reach a value of 70 km/s.  相似文献

We present here new spectroscopic observations of Mrk 1040 and LEDA 212995 (Mrk 1040 companion) obtained with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT). The intensity ratios and widths for the narrow emission lines found in LEDA 212995 are typical of H II regions. The red‐shift (0.0169 ± 0.00015) of the object derived from these emission lines is very close to the red‐shift of Mrk 1040 (z = 0.01665). The weak narrow and broad absorption lines were detected in the Hα wavelength band of LEDA 212995 spectra. These absorptions indicate that the companion might be at least partly obscured by Mrk 1040. A coronal hole was observed for three days of its passage near the central meridian of the Sun. Spectrograms containing strong lines of ionized calcium were obtained. The central intensities of the Ca II H, K, and λ849.8 nm lines in the region of the coronal hole and in the quiet-Sun region outside its boundaries were measured. Only the line profiles that were confidently identified as being undisturbed even by weak flocculi were selected. All profiles were averaged in each of the two chromospheric network components (network and cell), and the average profiles were calculated using all of the available data (network+cell). Small differences were found between the central intensities of the Ca II H and K lines inside and outside the coronal hole, with the hole being brighter than the quiet region. A detailed statistical analysis shows that these small differences are real at high confidence levels owing to the large sample sizes. A difference of the same sign is slightly noticeable in the infrared line, but its confidence level is less than 90%. The chromosphere in the coronal hole is brightened by the cell alone; in the network, the chromospheric foot of the coronal hole does not differ from the quiet region. Comparison with the results of other authors obtained from observations in higher atmospheric layers suggests that the network also contains a brightness peak that subsequently gives way to a characteristic depression, but it lies higher than that in the cell.  相似文献

This paper presents results from high resolution observations of the Mira AB binary system taken by the HST (Hubble Space Telescope) in the ultraviolet region through the period (1999–2004). By comparing the results using HST data with those obtained from the IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) observations through the period (1979–1995). we found new variations in the profiles, widths and fluxes of Mg II (k&h) emission lines. In addition to this it appears that there are another emission components at some phases in the red and blue sides of both Mg II (k&h) emission lines. These emission components may be of Mira A origin. There is a considerable shift of both Mg II (k&h) emission lines in observation taken on 2nd February 2004. The Mg II profiles extends up to more than 600 km/s, and redshifted as with IUE observations.  相似文献

Be stars show both emission and absorption profiles in the optical part of the spectrum, and these are found to vary with the time. Some of the shifts in profiles were earlier interpreted as Doppler shifts. However, some of the shifts of features in both emission and absorption line profiles may be artifacts due to superposition of an emission profile arising from an Hii region around a binary compact object, and a profile due to the Be star. This interpretation of shifts in line profiles has the advantage over the conventional Doppler-shift interpretation in so far as it does not need the oscillation of a large mass of circumstellar gas, and leads to the observed correlation between radial velocity (RV) variations and V/R variations.  相似文献

The behavior of profiles of the Na I D line and of the infrared Ca II triplet for the star R Coronae Borealis (R CrB) during shallow light minima of 1998-1999 is traced using high-resolution spectra. During a light maximum, the sodium lines had an absorption profile with a shift of —(2-4) km/sec. During a light minimum, a narrow emission feature, which has an almost constant absolute intensity and a shift of —(8-10) km/sec, and an intense circumstellar absorption feature, which has a variable profile and a variable relative shift corresponding to an increase to 220 km/sec in the velocity of mass ejection, appeared in the cores of absorption lines. For several days before the onset of a light minimum, all three calcium lines exhibited a narrow emission feature in the line core with a shift of —(1-5) km/sec. All the subsequent changes in a line involved mainly the shape of the absorption line profile. The narrow emission feature's absolute intensity and relative position were maintained during all our observations. The behavior of the Na I D line profiles can be described qualitatively within the framework of the model of a spherical dust shell.  相似文献

Line intensity ratios of EUV emission lines from Navii and Alix have been considered for electron density and temperature determinations within the chromosphere-corona transition region and the corona. The electron pressure within the emission region has been assumed to be a constant parameter. Theoretical line intensities for these ions have been computed using a model solar atmosphere and compared with the values as observed by ATM ultraviolet spectrometer. The observed intensities correspond to the average quiet-Sun conditions near solar minimum.  相似文献

Spectroscopic data taken with a moderate resolution spectrograph in the region of the Hα and Hβ lines are presented for the Herbig B8e star MWC 419. The spectroscopic observations were accompanied by broad band BVR photometric measurements. The observations reveal a variability in the line profiles that is typical of Herbig Ae/Be stars with signs of a strong stellar wind. The greatest changes are observed in the region of the absorption components of the line profiles, which convert the profile from a type P CygII to P CygIII, as well as in the intensities of the central emission components. A model technique is used for quantitative interpretation of this variability and it shows that the P Cyg profile conversion of the absorption component can be explained in terms of a stellar wind model in which its distribution over latitude varies on a time scale of a few days. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 2, pp. 259–280 (May 2007).  相似文献

This paper mainly deals with the development of a method for the interpretation of eclipse observations in the extreme limb - lower chromosphere transition region. We compute line profiles emitted by a column of 1 cm2 cross section along the line of sight and, by integration, profiles and total (flash) intensities from a slice of 1 cm width beyond the Moon's edge, at various heights with respect to the solar limb. The solar models used are mentioned in Section 1; method and approximations are described in Section 2. Calculations have been made for some Fei lines with various equivalent widths (Table I); the results are discussed in Section 3. It appears that the method enables one to distinguish between the various models. Particularly line intensities just inside the limb are very important.We compared our computed results with some observations made by Houtgast (Section 4). We use the Cerenkov line radiation and the moving model of quasar to discuss the formation of some broad emission lines of quasars. Our calculated profiles and relative intensities of the lines are in good agreement with the observations. The Cerenkov line radiation may therefore be important in the formation of the emission lines.  相似文献

Results are presented from a detailed spectrophotometric study of a unique system of physically coupled galaxies whose spectra contain identical emission lines. This system consists of four galaxies, three of which have a double or multiple structure in their central portions and are, by definition, galaxies with two or multiple nuclei. Two of these objects are the galaxies with an ultraviolet excess (UVE), Mark 261 and Mark 262, while one is a galaxy made up of two identical starlike nuclei that are referred to as the “twin objects.” In the DSS2 charts, the latter show up as two adjacent stars without any surroundings. However, there are two condensations between these starlike nuclei. The fourth object has a triplet structure. It is shown here that all these objects have the same emission (line) spectra and red shifts. All the physical characteristics that can be determined from the spectra are determined: red shifts, relative intensities of emission lines, their equivalent widths, distances to the galaxies, etc. It is concluded that the members of this system have a common origin, more or less consistent with Ambartsumyan's idea of the fragmentation of an isolated, high density body. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 48, No. 4, pp. 503–514 (November 2005).  相似文献

EUV spectra of coronal loops above an active region show clear evidence of strong dynamical activity. We present an example where the Ov 629 Å line, formed at 240 000 K, is shifted from its reference position corresponding to line-of-sight velocities greater than 50 km s-1 with the shift extending over a large fraction of a loop. The observations were made with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), and are from active region NOAA 7981 on the east solar limb on 27 July 1996. An animation has been prepared showing the variation of the shift or flow velocity along the loop. This animation is to be found on the enclosed CD-ROM and gives a clear impression of the dynamical condition present in the loop. The appearance of the loop system in different lines formed over a range in temperature as well as the observed dynamics indicates that loops at different temperatures are not closely co-located. Finally, the results are discussed and related to mechanisms that may cause line shifts.  相似文献

Double-peaked broad emission lines in active galactic nuclei are generally considered to be formed in an accretion disc. In this paper, we compute the profiles of reprocessing emission lines from a relativistic, warped accretion disc around a black hole in order to explore the possibility that certain asymmetries in the double-peaked emission-line profile which cannot be explained by a circular Keplerian disc may be induced by disc warping. The disc warping also provides a solution for the energy budget in the emission-line region because it increases the solid angle of the outer disc portion subtended to the inner portion of the disc. We adopted a parametrized disc geometry and a central point-like source of ionizing radiation to capture the main characteristics of the emission-line profile from such discs. We find that the ratio between the blue and red peaks of the line profiles becoming less than unity can be naturally predicted by a twisted warped disc, and a third peak can be produced in some cases. We show that disc warping can reproduce the main features of multipeaked line profiles of four active galactic nuclei from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.  相似文献

The EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on Hinode will observe solar corona and upper transition region emission lines in the wavelength ranges 170?–?210 Å and 250?–?290 Å. The line centroid positions and profile widths will allow plasma velocities and turbulent or non-thermal line broadenings to be measured. We will derive local plasma temperatures and densities from the line intensities. The spectra will allow accurate determination of differential emission measure and element abundances within a variety of corona and transition region structures. These powerful spectroscopic diagnostics will allow identification and characterization of magnetic reconnection and wave propagation processes in the upper solar atmosphere. We will also directly study the detailed evolution and heating of coronal loops. The EIS instrument incorporates a unique two element, normal incidence design. The optics are coated with optimized multilayer coatings. We have selected highly efficient, backside-illuminated, thinned CCDs. These design features result in an instrument that has significantly greater effective area than previous orbiting EUV spectrographs with typical active region 2?–?5 s exposure times in the brightest lines. EIS can scan a field of 6×8.5 arc?min with spatial and velocity scales of 1 arc?sec and 25 km?s?1 per pixel. The instrument design, its absolute calibration, and performance are described in detail in this paper. EIS will be used along with the Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) and the X-ray Telescope (XRT) for a wide range of studies of the solar atmosphere.  相似文献

We present detailed scattering models confirming that distinctive variations in polarization across the broad Hα line, which are observed in a significant fraction of type 1 Seyfert galaxies, can be understood in terms of a rotating line-emitting disc surrounded by a coplanar scattering region (the equatorial scattering region). The predicted polarization properties are: (i) averaged over wavelength, the position angle (PA) of polarization is aligned with the projected disc rotation axis and hence also with the radio source axis; (ii) the polarization PA rotates across the line profile, reaching equal but opposite (relative to the continuum PA) rotations in the blue and red wings; and (iii) the degree of polarization peaks in the line wings and passes through a minimum in the line core. We identify 11 objects that exhibit these features to different degrees. In order to reproduce the large-amplitude PA rotations observed in some cases, the scattering region must closely surround the emission disc and the latter must itself be a relatively narrow annulus – presumably the Hα-emitting zone of a larger accretion disc. Asymmetries in the polarization spectra may be attributable to several possible causes, including bulk radial infall in the equatorial scattering region, or contamination by polar scattered light. The broad Hα lines do not, in general, exhibit double-peaked profiles, suggesting that a second Hα-emitting component of the broad-line region is present, in addition to the disc.  相似文献

We investigate the possibility that strong EUV lines observed with the Goddard Solar EUV Rocket Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS) provide good proxies for estimating the total coronal flux over shorter wavelength ranges. We use coordinated SERTS and Yohkoh observations to obtain both polynomial and power-law fits relating the broad-band soft X-ray fluxes to the intensities of Fexvi 335 Ú and 361 Ú, Fexv 284 Ú and 417 Ú, and Mgix 368 Ú measured with SERTS. We found that the power-law fits best cover the full range of solar conditions from quiet Sun through active region, though not surprisingly the cooler Mgix 368 Ú line proves to be a poor proxy. The quadratic polynomial fits yield fair agreement over a large range for all but the Mgix line. However, the linear fits fail conspicuously when extrapolated into the quiet-Sun regime. The implications of this work for the Heii 304 Ú line formation problem are also briefly considered.  相似文献
